If I were a lesbian...

Postby Ben Varkentine » Tue Apr 29, 2003 2:49 am

...I'd write a letter to Entertainment Weekly (ew_letters@ew.com) giving feedback on the Will & Grace article in their new issue (the one with the naked Dixie Chicks on the cover--yum!).

Specifically, I'd comment on the sentence in the W&G piece that says "...gay fans in particular are sensitive to whatever actions (or inactions) the show takes because it's one of the few places they see themselves reflected on TV."

And I'd point out...rationally...that there used to be at least one more show on the air where gay and specifically lesbian fans like me could see themselves reflected. However, this was shattered for a plot point, and the bone of condescension thrown at us this season is no substitute.

Yes, that's what I'd do, if I were a lesbian. Unfortunately (?), I'm not. So I'm not telling you to do this thing. I'm saying no. Don't do it. Don't do this thing...

(And when you do, be sure to include your name, address and daytime telephone number. They like that.)

Yes write both EW and GLAAD, as GLAAD put a quote in that article.

Also The April 25th edition of EW had an article on how insulting the homophobic jokes on AMerican idol were.

Scott Seomin of GLAAD, wrote in this article:

“The fact that this was just in jest is not the point, Gay viewers are insulted, and straight viewers are given permission to marginalize an entire community. I’ve heard the my-client-isn’t –homophobic excuse from Ryan’s and Randy’s publicists, which is frankly insulting. I don’t care if Ryan has gay friends or if Randy ahs worked for gay artists. What they say in front of 20 million people is what matters.”

and here's what he had to say about Tara in the Soap Opera Weekly:

Buffy creator Joss Whedon," has been extremely inclusive of our lives," says Scott Seomin, entertainment and media director for the Gay & lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)."Tara wasn't the first character to meet an untimely death on that show."

I also know he had a quote in that Will and Grace article, I just seem to have missplaced that. If anyone can find his quote. So I encourage to write both EW and GLAAD.

standard@thewb.com

Is bouncing for me. It sees that the WB isn't interested in feeback. However, faces@talk.thewb.com does work.

Someone I know also got a notice from Girfriends.com that her letter would be printed. I got her permission to post it here:
Quote:
In the article "The Buffy Factor" by Lauren Dockett, I found this statemnt interesting:

"The pair apologized for any insensitivity but reiterated that Buffy was a show about hardship, and that not killing Tara would have been homophobic." By giving us more insensitivity? Marti Noxon and Joss Whedon apologize and yet they call their fans homphobic for seeing the Lesbian cliche of a lesbian murdered after sex. Most of the articles on the lesbian cliche like the one Ms. Dockett quotes do not accuse Mutant Enemy of homphobia. This phrase is used by them to dismiss any arguments about the lesbian cliche. You don't have to be homophoic to show a negatice gay image. I beleive that the character of Tara was not defined by her sexulaity until her end where she was killed to turn her girlfriend evil. Until then both Willow and Tara were not portrayed as gays but characters. It's ashame.

Ms. Noxon seems to contunually complain about her fans: "I’ve gotten some of the most frightening e-mails and letters from our fans for killing Tara." I'm certain that she also got many intelligent emails from fans but doesn't mention those because arguing the cliche is to be homophobic in her mind, I guess. Many fans were upset about the death of the Tara character because it signalled a brutal end to an exeplary gay portrayal. What might have been held up as an examplar nor falls into the category of lesbian meeting a bad end like "The Children's Hours" and evil lesbians like "Basic Instinct".

It's sad to say that in this day and age the rare lesbian portrayal is one where both live and neither is evil. Another cliche we have this season is the explotation of 2 women kissing that we have gottenw tih Willow and the new girlfriend. Wilow and Tara's intimacy was never exploted in promos. The new relationship show the 2 girls having sex but no relationship. Is this for their male audience because it provides little but prurient interest.

I knew that Tara was going to die all season since Amber Benson was not in the credits. Mutant Enemy has never killed any of the characters in the credits (until the series finale I guess). Tara was never treated as a full fledged character. She was Willow's girlfriend, a witch and a lesbian. She had no story arc except to be killed to turn Willow evil. Joss Whedon was planning this plotline almost as soon as the character was introduced. She was always meant to die and have a tragic end like most lesbians do on TV shows. Thankfully most lesbians live happy and fullfilling lives and do not die or become evil. You wouldn't be able to tell that from wathcing movies and TV. This is part of the reason that so few people oppose laws against gay marriage. Their subconsciious is filled with images fo gay relationships as doomed and fleeting. Too bad.

I wish you would cover the ratngs loss that Buffy the Vampire Slayerhas suffered since the death of the Tara character last seaosn. The ratings drop show a rejection of their story by fans many of whome were former Xena fans until that ended in death as well. There is a story to be told about broken promises and lies to fans who simply want to see an image of themselves on TV.
I'm not sure if both our letters will be in Girlfriends but if any of it gets in, it would help to show that not everyone agress with GLAAD.

sam

please let your friend know that her letter was spot on - I especially loved the last paragraph. I too wish instead of the media focussing on Buffy's past 'brilliance' they would look at what the show is now. If anyone can truly look at what is on the screen now and call it good writing, or a show about girl power then we need to start revising the English dictionary. It would be a refreshing change for news outlets to report the news about this show - that ratings are falling, misogyny is fun and exciting for ME, the show has become a joke, and the show's most significant premise (friendship can beat anything) forgotten.

edited because I forgot to thank hip for his one spot shopping post. :bigwave you just made it easier for me to vent.:grin

history is being written for buffy (Tara, W/T) now and if we are going to help shape it we have to keep writing

when I could find them - I've gotten email addys for the reporters/people interviewed/sites etc that have been giving buffy play in their columns/media

I'd suggest writing a solid respectful letter on buffy, why your disappointed in it/why its audience has erroded so much - and sending it to this list

Keep writing

Hip - I've written my solid respectful letter on Buffy :) It was extremely easy to say why I am so disappointed in it and why it has lost so much of its audience. Thanks for the addresses.

A new project for us all

HOW ABOUT WE WRITE TRIO TV???

Amber appeared in episode 12 (The Club) of the 1998 series “Cracker,” which due to premature cancellation by ABC has a number of unaired episodes that were filmed but not shown. “Cracker” was the US attempt at 'Americanizing' the UK show “Cracker” featuring Robbie Cotrane as the lead Fitz.

TRIO TV

Trio TV regularly revives/runs short-lived series

They take suggestions –

from their website:

[VIEWER & VISTOR FEEDBACK

Your view is important to us. So drop us a line to help us provide the kind of programming you would like or simply to tell us what you think. Call our toll-free number 1-800-890-TRIO(8746), or email us at triofeedback@triotv.com]

What say we WRITE/CALL THEM!!

And ask that they revive ABC’s Cracker and that we would especially love to see episode 12 with Amber Benson!!

Information on Cracker here

Cracker Series Cast

Robert Pastorelli - Gerry Fitzgerald (aka Fitz)

Angela Featherstone - Hannah Tyler

Carolyn McCormic - Judith Fitzgerald

John Hartnett - Michael Fitzgerald

R. Lee Ermey - Lieutenant Fry

Robert Wisdom - Detective Danny Watlington

Good idea, hip. I was fortunate to tape that Amber ep of Cracker a while back. I think it was shown on A&E. It was pretty creepy, cause one of the guys from the film Boys Don't Cry was the villain on this, too.

Amber was great, as usual, even though it was in a small role.
