Not about Buffy at all.

I was reading Wikipedia today and came across the entry on Renee Montoya (Batman comics).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renee_Montoya

She is a lesbian and is a very positive character. But get this. Renee has been outed by Two-Face in a twisted attempt to proclaim his love for her and he frames her for murder,

Renee was cleared of all the charges. Her life was still in chaos, however, especially her family; while her younger brother knew about her sexuality, her very religious parents didn't, and disowned her upon discovering the truth.

Renee's partner, Det. Allen, was murdered by a corrupt forensics officer, Jim Corrigan. After learning that Corrigan would not be charged with Det. Allen's death, Renee quit the GCPD in the final issue of Gotham Central, leaving her shield on Captain Maggie Sawyer's desk.

So in one issue, Gotham Central volume 2: Half a Life, Renee spurns the love of straight man, loses her family, her lover (dead) and her job: ie all the things she loves and holds dear. I should also point out that she is one of the very few lesbians in the DC world. And one of the only ones I know of that is still alive.

Kittens. I am sorry but I don't have any fight left in me.

Plus this issue has won all sorts of comics awards.
I feel I should do something, but I have no idea as to what or how.

I don't suppose Renee is about to put on a mask and become a vigilante, is she? If she were a male character, I would say this is all a rather traditional back-story for a superhero.

Maggie Sawyer is also a lesbian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggie_Sawyer

I used to read the Superman comics back in the 80s and from what I remember she was also a very positive character, but don't know what's happened to her since then, and it looks like she has been appearing in Smallville but with no indication of her sexuality. I don't watch Smallville so no idea if SDK is still working there but didn't he come to the Kitten Board and promise to do better in his future work? Has he been or will he stay true to his word?

That is the other hand.

Renee has always been (to my knowledge) a very positive character and the wrtiers have usually done well with her and by her.

I guess she moving on to a new series where she will be more central, so who knows?

Still it all struck me very deja vu.

Just thought I'd note that this Sunday's New York Times Book Review has a review of "The Physics of the Buffyverse" by Jennifer Ouellette.

This is worth noting because:

1. The Times is still a "paper of record", and this generally indicates that the editorial staff of the Book Review thinks that the book is an item worthy of attention.

2. It is a credit to the quality of the show as it originally was that even now, some five (!) years after its demise, it remains something that someone would write a book about and that the NYTimes Book Review would review.

What a shame it had to end up the way it did....
