'The Cyberspace Ball' time for fun&frolic, vent or dance

Postby helpful information perha » Fri Feb 28, 2003 9:50 am

Given that Buffy's last ep is May 20th

and that for me at least this wake is going to be a major celebration - I'd like to suggest we have a

DANCE ON BUFFY's GRAVE BALL!!

We could set up a running thread

get us an MC for the evening

a prom type committee could form to set up and decorate with pics and balloons and flowers and links to this and that and the other greatest moments etc

a program committee could set up an evening of

step to the mic/kepboard 'tributes' for some and "roasts" for others

etc etc etc anyone in - got some ideas? Lets dance;)

title changed per JASD's request -- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

sign on to provide toasts/roasts/poems/tributes etc below!!!

Well, I have to admit that I have a problem with the title. I still like Buffy. Especially after reading about SMG's own take of the character, I don't wnat to dance on her grave.

Is there any hope that we can change it from "Buffy" to "Mutant Enemy"? Or - if that doesn't happen - change it into anything that indicates the series and cannot be mistaken for the character?

JASD - I was thinking "Buffy" in the show sense as opposed to the character sense - so sure we could change it to the - heck yes I've always liked SMG but her stock went way up in my book given her recent comments - so

Dance on ME's Grave CyberBall

or

anyone have some other suggestions to name the celebratory "Ball"??

we neea good catchy title for the dance

again this is a VIRTUAL party to be held the day the last ep of buffy airs (May 20th?)

sign up to bring your own stake and

1) decorations

(linkages to fav pics may be better than inserting them into the thread since that could slow things down

2) toasts for those we love

3) roasts for those on the um 'not so much' list

4) fav memories/moments

5) fav clips and sound bites

(again links probably best)

5) songs/poems/tributes

6) other ideas?

7) Interested in being the MC for the evening - want to serve on the planning committee ..sign up here!

__________

edited to add

ok we are getting close here

anyone want to MC this roast of the show?

Damn, boy Whedon sure did pick the wrong group of fans to piss off.

Granted we won't have that much of an effect by ourselves, but every little bit helps.

MC? Hmmm, can I sing like Tom Jones? what's up pussycat? whoa! ack! Better stick to doing ratings analysis.

C O O L !!!

someone decorated for the dance!

I wasn't sure how I would feel when this day actually arrived and I'm still not sure how I'll feel once its over - but after reading all the spin/spew about whedon/noxon having made a feminist show and how grateful/empowered girls should feel - well I'm not about to forgive and forget ME's hogwash anytime soon - if nothing else this experience has shown me how twisted and out of step with reality Hollywood is - they have amazing power to reach and educate and elevate the public conscience on a world stage - yet they squander the public airwaves on trash tv that panders to the lowest common denominator - instead of pushing people to grow as media consumers and demand ever better quality - They treat men like idiots who can only respond to scatological humor, titillation and ever increasing violence especially sexual violence - they perpetuate the denigration of women and minorities - all to chase a buck and promulgate the entrenched social hierarchy – and ME is the worse of these offenders – they came in and pitched to kids – attracted a young female fan base and established a franchise based on the promise of a new female hero who would defy the clichés – then they sold these young women out completely. similarly, whedon promised the gay/lesbian community a real, evolving and healthy depiction of a lesbian relationship – only to set up and then sell out that community - by reiterating the typical lesbian cliché, one dead one evil right after their first on screen sex.

Whedon wanted to make a social statement with his testosterone driven Firefly – and in fact he did – he told us a white male can’t see the future for women as progressing beyond anything but whores in space or fems who emulate men’s ways of fighting

– in fact –

He had a very real chance to make a TRUE social statement(s) – he had a chance to show the women of Buffy as hero’s who could maintain their moral center and triumph over all odds (as all the major male super hero’s and their sidekicks have for years) without being beaten down, corrupted or murdered - but he didn’t - rather he made a male murderer/stalker/rapist who was obsessed with the blond girl - the hero of the show - and he did it at the expense of all those fans - those young girls - who had put their faith in his Buffy – message sent – keep at it boys – it matters not that she says NO – just keep stalking - and if necessary take what you want – because she will come to you - and your bed - and tell you she loves you in the end. Any wonder NOW trashed buffy in this years report card – they know when they’ve been had.

Parents were had - or as one father put it - what parent wants to see their daughter with a poster of a rapist up their bedroom?

Whedon had a very real chance to make a TRUE social statement with Willow and Tara – but - he made it clear he didn’t care about the social issues he raised when he introduced Tara or when he killed her - he put his lesbian fantasy on the screen and when he was through playing nice with his “meat puppets” – when he had the lesbian community praising and standing up for him - he pissed in their faces – he finished off the couple with his own snuff fantasy that left Tara, the “heart of the show” dead and her lover willow drenched in said hearts blood – and then strutted through cyber space making it clear that he frankly didn’t give a damn what people said – he was through with lesbians – they were passé

But it wasn’t passé for the rest of the world – the boston herald stood up and finally pointed a finger at whedon and told it like it is – minorities look out – sunnydale is in “clan country” – and that salvo precipitated the avalanche of media that has dogged the show ever since – to this day – it’s the W/T issue that hounds ME’s writers every interview – even holding center page of the LA Times Sunday editorial section as the show closes

Now it’s a matter of how buffy will be remembered – will ME’s spin machine shape the press and the public’s memory to remember it as whedon would wish – or – will those who have been scammed by this pied piper keep the history honest and show the world the emperor really had no clothes – just a twisted agenda

Time will tell

But today – ME leaves the UPN airwaves – and for this – I dance

Hell, after this UPN may be leaving the airwaves.

Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth for UPN. They jockeyed to get Buffy and in the end it caused their downfall.

That would be ironic.

Hello Kittens-

Tonight the crap ends. I think I understand how this works now- the show itself became a vampire i.e. it turned evil and tried to feed off the people who trusted it. A pity UPN didn't have holy water near by, they might have survived.

Jix - I'd say UPN had plenty of water handy from the hosing they got from whedon but doubt they could get anyone to bless that much red ink

talk about squandering an opportunity - whedon had big numbers to open season 6 and did nothing but run off his audience

he's squacking to the press now blaming everyone but himself

And now for a song. . .

Postby sprhrgrl » Tue May 20, 2003 7:56 pm

It's kind of a "first I'll save her, then I'll kill her" moment. . .

But somehow, the lines to A Rush and A Push and the Land Is Ours by The Smiths are running through my head. Snippets below:

"hung by his pretty white neck some eighteen months ago" - so it was a bit less than that, same bit.

"I travelled to a mystical time zone and I missed my [girls] and I soon came home "

"there's too much caffeine in your [television show] and a lack of real spice in your life"

"a rush and a push and the land that we stand on is ours it has been before so it shall be again and people who are uglier than you and I they take what they need, and leave" - does this even need a comment?

"Ooh, but don't mention love I'd hate the pain and the strain all over again" - and I do love them. so much that it makes me ache.

And the end?

Oh, I think I'm in love (think I'm in love)

Urrgh, I think I'm in lerv

Oh ...

That's my complete experience watching Willow and Tara.

Also, I enjoy the little analysis at the bottom - "This song also features a welcome return of unsubtle homosexual references, whereby the old-young man is urged 'phone me, phone me, phone me.'"

Yes to all the kittens who have kept W/T close to their hearts. It's been rough and god knows many others would have folded. But our love is strong just as theirs is. We outlived them and you know, yeah god bless you all, it hasn't been easy, not everyone has agreed, but in the end I am proud of the kittens.

'The Cyberspace Ball' time for fun&frolic, vent or dance

Postby kajo 2000 » Wed May 21, 2003 6:34 am

If it's not too late, here is a little song for the party:

The End of an Era by kajo 2000

There once was a man named Joss

Of Mutant Enemy Inc he was the boss

He said I am a genius

If you disagree you're delirious

'Cos my works are TV's Holy Grail

So Joss built an empire so high

With Buffy, Angel & Firefly

With Marti on hand

To deliver his grand master plan

There was no way he could possibly fail

Then the nasty people at Fox

Tossed Firefly away, said it's dross

And Joss raged in a fury

It's a conspiracy surely

Must be the Kittens, the Dark Angel fans or Gail

So he whined and complained at The Bronze

'Bout the Kittens and others who'd gone

They just don't understand

What I'm doing's all planned

It will all make sense at the end of the tale

Then Sarah told Joss goodbye

She prefers Scooby Doo to Sunnydale High

'Cos she tired of the scripts

And the trysts in Spike's crypt

And that bathroom scene was beyond the pale

Eliza also decided to run

She had no faith in a spin-off lacking fun

So she found her Tru Calling

Leaving a tantrum-throwing Joss bawling

"My spinoff dreams are over!" he'd wail

His last hope was Angel but still

The WB considered it over-the-hill

Only one thing could save it

A bleached blonde vampire (not David)

He may be forty but he's sexy and male

So Angel was saved at the last minute

No more Connor or Cordelia but Spike's in it

Now the Spike fans are happy

But the Angel fans feel crappy

Will they stick with the show or just bail?

And last night Buffy went off the air

Those that noticed found it hard to even care

Seven years led to this

Cookie dough and a kiss

Buffy's smiling 'cos it's finally over, all hail!

So where do we go from here?

Joss will still have one show left next year

Will Firefly be resurrected?

Will it crash again as expected?

Who knows? Who cares? Pass the ale

So what have we finally learned?

Trust in Joss and you're sure to get burned

Mutant Enemy staff are all liars

Pain-inflicting admirers

They hate their own fans and deserve to fail

So it's over a year since we lost Tara

And the Kittens are still sad here without her

But we'll love her forever

And forget about her never

She and Willow are the only ship we'll sail

So I've come to the end of my song

The Kitten Board's still here, still going strong

As long as Xita's still willing

We'll keep posting and chilling

About Amber and Aly's new projects and ....ALE!

I also wanted to pass on my well wishes.

I know this was hard. (Hell, I had actually write RPG stats for Warren at one point this year.) But we came through, and in many ways we are much better off for it.

The Kittens have a lot we can be proud of.

We raised awareness of an ugly issue.

We kept on the press, and now a year later we stand here knowing we were right.

We raised money for a wonderful cause, not an ad in Variety or for a gift for people that make millions.

And we stayed together. Sure we didn't always agree with each other.

We did this.

We survived.

But I really feel a special thanks goes to xita.

She did hold this place together through something that would have destroyed nearly every other board.

So my hat (that cute little one my son wears) is off to you xita.

Not to mention all the regulars here and the lurkers that made this a place I wanted to come back to everyday. (If I start mentioning names I'll forget someone and I don't want anyone to feel left out.)

Today in Chicago the sun is shinning, it is bright and clear.

I feel that the same condition exists on the Kitten board today. It is a brand new day.

Pens is bekoning me, there are so many good fics to read, so many more RPG adventures I can write, the potential is endless.

Kajo: Great song!

I especially want to thank Amber for refusing to do CWDP. That will always make her a goddess in my book. The Kitten board will outlive BTVS because it has always been more of a community than a fan site. Thanks to Xita and the mods for keeping it going during the hard times.

Thank god Buffy's over!!!
