Okay so this was actually a dream that I had a while ago. I got the idea of turning it into a short story for the Kittenboard so here goes.
Title: What Makes You
Author: writerfreak
Email Address: writerfreakchick@aol.com
Rating: PG or PG-13....I'm not really sure which, one of the two.
Disclaimer: The idea was mine. Everything you recognize probably doesn't belong to me. It belongs to Joss Whedon or ME.
Feedback: Yes, please, if you will. It might be my first attempt but don't be afraid to be harsh if it really sucks.
Summary: A day at the park, I guess, with family, but it mostly focuses on W/T of course. It's a one-shot fic. Very short. Unless I think up ideas to continue it. Season 5 sometime. Oh, and its un-beta'd. Unless you count my sis reading a paragraph.
Notes: Again this is just something I dreamed up one night. The idea of it anyway. I decided to turn it into a fic. Oh...and the lyrics...I wrote them a while ago.
What makes you happy
What makes you smile
What makes you wonderful
For a while
What makes your soul sing
What makes your heart ring
What makes you good enough
Love
Willow felt her heart skip a beat at the soft melodic voice singing along with the radio. They were on their way to Sunnydale Park for a nice relaxing day with the family. Xander and Anya were in Xander's car right behind them and Buffy would be joining later with Dawn after Buffy got off of work. The nightly fight of demons and vampires had been pretty slow of late, which usually signalled an oncoming apocalypse. To the Scoobies it meant take a day to rest and relax because there wouldn't be many coming up for a while. That is what sparked the idea for this little adventure. Now they were pulling up at the park and Willow certainly wasn't going to let this day go wrong. They all needed this and it was about time they had it. She turned off the engine of the truck and got out slowly, taking in all the fresh air and getting the picnic basket and blankets from the bed of the truck.
The walk to the nice shady spot under the gang's favorite tree was fairly short. Filled with laughter as they jeered and joked to relieve the tension in them all. The unsureness of whether or not they would have to avert another end to the world. The group spread the blankets and sat slowly, taking time to enjoy all of it, every ounce of the happy time together. To just be a family.
“What's on the menu, Will?” Xander asked, anxious to get to the food. They were all starving, having spent the morning making all of the tremendous amount of food. Tara had done most of the cooking of course. She was the best cook out of everyone. From her magically delicious pancakes to the absolutely delightful fruit salad waiting for them as dessert. Soon everyone had sandwiches and salads with their sodas or juice. There was little talk as they ate. Most of it was random questions about their days, or lives. Catching up. With Willow and Tara so busy with college, and Xander and Anya's planning of the wedding, then Buffy so busy with work and Dawn no one really had much time just to catch up on daily life. The four of them shared the quiet and the conversation in relative peace waiting for Buffy and Dawn to show up. As they did the conversation picked up immediately, Buffy talking about work with Xander, and Dawn talking about school and homework with Willow and Tara, but mostly with Willow. Tara watched quietly as Dawn talked. She watched Willow's face as she listened intently. The changes, as she either contemplated or answered questions, the rapt attention. Lunch wrapped up pretty quickly and wound down in to a relaxing moment as everyone started to enjoy dessert.
Looking back it was Xander who started the food fight. Trying to throw grapes to Buffy to catch in her mouth. Until one of them flew by her and hit Willow then fell on Tara. Everyone started picking at the fruit and tossing it in every direction. Tara picked up the wayward grape and threw it in Willow's face, then got up and ran. Willow quickly gave chase. Running after her around the see-saws and the swings. Around the whole playground onto the path that led back to the picnic area. It was there she caught up with her. Tara tripped as she ran, Willow catching her from behind and pulling her fast against her body. Tara let out a slight squeal as she was caught, before she started laughing. She turned as her feet hit the ground. Both girls laughing wildly and enjoying the feel of being in each others arms. Willow kissed her, short but incredibly sweet. Then they joined hands and walked slowly back to the picnic spot. Xander was napping with Anya's head resting on his shoulder. Dawn was passed out as well with her head resting on Buffy's lap and Buffy was watching over them all. Cautious even in daylight of all the baddies that could be out there.
Willow and Tara sat slowly, like they had before. Willow's back against the tree and Tara's head resting in Willow's lap. Both fell lightly asleep. Peacefully asleep. Buffy being the only one to stay awake to watch over them. The nap wasn't long, everyone woke up within an hour after falling out. Just a power nap. Getting ready for the night, when it was back to the darkness and fighting evil. By mutual silent agreement, they all started gathering up the picnic supplies and walked slowly back to their vehicles. Packing it away and hugging each other quick see-ya-laters. The others climbed in their cars as Willow and Tara took to the truck.
“That was nice.” Tara finally said to break the silence in the vehicle. “Yeah, it was fun. We all really needed that. A day to just be us, ya know.” Conversation died slowly, lapsing into silence as they enjoyed the ride. Willow lightly grasped Tara's hand in the center of the seats. They pulled up at the house after only a few minutes. Getting out and walking hand in hand to the door. Once inside they went their seperate ways. Tara headed toward the kitchen while Willow went up the stairs to help Dawn with the homework they had discussed earlier. Everyone feeling much lighter having spent the day together. Just being family. Tara stood at the sink thinking. Slowly she smiled, and reflecting, softly saying to herself, “Yeah, that's what makes you.”
The End.
