hey sith! i see that i owe you plenty of feedbacks... :blush

i can't help but be gripped with sadness reading through the last couple of chapters... it seems the dark hour has come... willow's capture!

it seems that willow and tara blames each other for something... tara with:
“Everytime I try to help, something always goes wrong. Look what I’ve done here. I tried to protect Willow, and she got captured. I tried to help the Gungans, and led the droids right to them. I tried to do my best to help, and managed to cause an even bigger mess.”

...and willow with:
But she[Tara] would try. Willow had been with her for ten years. And one thing she knew was that one Tara was set on a path, she never wavered. No matter how dangerous it would be.

And that meant that she would come for her now. And that meant that she would most likely die, if not because of the droids, then because of the Sith.

And it would be all because of her.

I’m sorry, Tara.

darth maul will definitely not make it easy for the jedis to save willow especially since as you said darth sidious trained him for that purpose.

annie might still be a towheaded boy but he has a good head on his shoulders.... i still can't sometimes believe that he grows up to be you-know-who (for the sake of those who have never seen the movie the chances of which i know is almost nil but just in case, you know).

Right now, she[Tara] had to concentrate on the mission.

so, they're actually going to save her now... i'm sure a great battle is up ahead and i can't wait!... i still feel bad by the destruction of tara's lightsaber... for that alone, i hope the jedis kick some serious sith butts!

Too bad for Tara. That's gotta be a cruddy sittuation to be in. If she rescues Willow I think she might be reconsidering Willows idea of leaving the life of a jedi.

I will try to send you an E-mail soon. sorry :-D

Hi Sith! :wave

Thank God Qui-Gon was there to talk to Tara and make her realise that she had done everything that she possibly could. I'm not so sure about his advice to tell the council about herself and Willow. Maybe the two of them could resign before the council starts to meddle.

Tara must really be off her game. I would have thought that she would be able to sense Anakin through the force.

The Emperor is a bigger bastard than Darth Maul!

Looking forward to your next update.

Whoops, I owe you feedback squared. Sorry, but my computer's been sitting on my desk with its guts out for the past few days for much-needed upgrades. Windows had a heart-attack when switched it on for the first time... but, even so, Oblivion runs nice and smoothly now. :)

Anyway, on to the feedback.

Nute Gunray was afraid

Yes, I think Nute Gunray is very often afraid, really. But the scene with Maul and Willow, wow, well done. It's nice to see that Willow held out, even if it was for a little bit. Maul really shows off his brutish nature in this scene, it's all about power for him. And poor Willow losing Tara's lightsaber like that. :(

As sith go, Maul lacks the finesse necessary to be a true Sith Lord. I think Maul's death was either planned/forseen by Palpatine, because I don't think Maul would have been nearly as useful in rallying and bringing together the seperatist forces as Dooku was.

Hm, it looks like both Willow and Tara have intense feelings of guilt here. I wonder if the Dark Side lies in wait to strike at them because of their fear of losing each other. Got any temptations planned there?

Do you know if OOM-9 would be shut down too if the droid control center goes? It would make sense for a general to be on a separate circuit, perhaps.

And the last passage of chapter fourteen once again proves that Palpatine is the undisputed star of the prequel trilogy. :kdevil

Nice chapters! Keep it up!

Sam : Not if you mind me clawing at the dashboard and shrieking like a cheerleader.

Hi, Sith! :wave

Between exams, I've finally managed to get caught up on your tale, so I'm dropping in to leave feedback as promised.

I absolutely love the story so far. You've captured the essences of W and T so well that despite the alternative setting, everything they say and do seems natural and in character. The story's also eminently readable and enjoyable, even for a reader like myself who knows little about the star wars universe.

Your characters are so well-developed; from the spinelessness (is that a word?) of Nute Gunray to the cold-hearted cruelty of Darth Maul, all of them just jump off the page with commanding presence - one could read their dialogue without their names and know exactly who's speaking. An excellent story, in all respects, and I can't wait to read more!

G'day, Sith.

Well, I believe congratulations are in order. You have even managed to make young Anikin less annoying! A feat I almost can't believe! :grin But seriously, so long as you avoid any 'yippee' moments, I'm happy.

It's good to see Tara has recognized her misstep in sheltering Willow from the world, now she just has to learn not to dwell on her mistakes too much.

Is it just me, or did it seem like Anikin picked up on Tara's thought that everything goes wrong when she's involved? Tara didn't seem to react, but ... I dunno, it just seemed to me as if Anikin sort of read her mind.

I wonder if Qui-Gon has let Obi-Wan in on he has gleaned about Tara and Willow's relationship. It we stay true to cannon events, and
Qui-Gon gets shish kebabed by Darth Maul
then if Qui-Gon hasn't shared, Willow and Tara are potentially in the clear.

“Lord Maul, once you have eliminated them, the prisoner’s life is forefit. Eliminate her as you see fit.”

Umm, what happened to the plan to turn Willow to the Dark Side? That's what they were up to, right?

Should be nearing the end of episode one shortly, right? Then, it's bring on the clones! Huzzah!

Cheers,
Paul.

tarebear: Hey, whatever works for you. Leave feedback whenever you can. If you really feel guilty about not leaving feedback, you could always make it up to me. ;)

Willow and Tara are indeed blaming each other. But it's not what you think. Willow is blaming herself for putting Tara in a position where she could get killed, while Tara is blaming herself for allowing Willow to come to harm. Remember that they've spent a great deal of time opening up to one another. Had they not done this, they probably would have been more professional about what's happened, but instead they're getting too emotional. Tara is especially taking it hard, as she believes that she's caused such a big mess that it's going to take more experienced Jedi (namely, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan) to put things right.

I really enjoyed writing Anakin into this chapter. I wanted to have him be involved with Tara, no matter how short it ended up being. At this point, although he's rather jaded that the Council rejected him, he's still optimistic enough that the situation will fix itself.

And yes, Willow's going to get rescued. It isn't going to be easy, though. But it sure will be fun.

Willowlover: You never know. ;)

caz: I think that's a major part of the whole saga arc I've got planned. Obi-Wan's rather oblivious as to what is going on between them, so for Qui-Gon to realize it proves how different the two are, something that's hinted at in the actual movie. And it will provide Tara with that much more of a hard decision later on, for when they encounter Maul, she will be conflicted between helping Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and rescuing Willow. On the one hand, she will want to help destroy the Sith, but on the other, letting Qui-Gon live means that she'll be outed to the Council.

It will be interesting. ;)

As for Anakin and Tara...well, I don't think I made it clear, but the two of them were introduced before this chapter in a "behind the scenes" fashion.

Useful_Oxymoron: Oh, I know how it feels to have your computer fucked up. My laptop is currently on the fritz, and it just drives me nuts.

I really liked that part with Willow and Maul, too. It shows how much Willow lets things get out of control when she's pushed. And Maul destroying her lightsaber is the height of arrogance, but I think that's what makes it work.

I do have some Dark Side temptations planned. But I don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. Be patient, young apprentice. :p

OOM-9...I'm still thinking about that, to be honest.

Devi: I'm glad little Annie made you go "Awww!"

Heather: It makes me happy to hear people enjoy the fact that I can get W and T so right in this 'verse. That was one of my main hangups when I started the fic. And I'm glad that you liked how I developed the other characters. They never really got their props in the movie, so I guess that means I can have free reign to do what I want...well, maybe not exactly what I want, but you know what I mean.

Paul: I'm glad you enjoyed my handling of little Annie. To be honest, unless things turn rather drastic, that's the only time I'm gonna use him in this fic, so I wouldn't worry about having any "yippee" moments.

Tara realizes her mistake, but there's a difference between recognizing a mistake and learning from it. ;)

Hmm. That moment was a tricky one to read. I originally wanted to have her say it, but Chris thought that the exchange would work better if I had Tara think that line. I guess it didn't come out as well as I thought. Ah, well.

Like I said above, Obi-Wan doesn't know (and even if he didn, it's probably a good bet he wouldn't say anything. Model Jedi that he is at this time, he's also guilty of secret love).

About the bad guy's turning Willow to the Dark Side...yeah, I guess I kinda fudged that up a bit. Willow can't be made a full fledged Sith since, at this time, there's two Sith in existence. And it wouldn't be a good idea to have Dark Jedi running around. And as much as Sidious thinks Maul is invincible, he also knows that he's expendable. So he had to build up plans upon plans if things go awry. Of course, we know better, but to Sidious, Maul cannot be stopped. And if he takes care of the Jedi, Willow's life becomes meaningless.

And yeah, we're getting near to the end. Bring on Episode II, baby! :D!

Sith, it looks like I missed giving feedback for Chapter 13 so this will be a twofer. First, chapter 13 and the attempts to corrupt Willow - eek! When Darth Maul sliced her light saber in half, I was sure that that would be the straw that broke the camel's back, although I suppose the camel's back isn't totally loaded up yet. I felt her pain, though.

And chapter 14, Tara's enduring quite a bit of introspection. She really has seemed to let her confidence be shaken by this. Not by losing Willow, but more so by letting her guard down in the first place.

And Obi-Wan has a secret love? I think I missed that somewhere. Although I did read something once that claimed that he was secretly in love with Anakin, once Anakin got to be older. I think. Is that what that's about? Anyway, a good couple of updates; you seem to be cruising right along with this story.

Looking back on that scene now, after hearing so many people comment on it, makes me realize how pivotal it is to the entire arc I have planned. And, knowing how I plan to have things go, makes what's coming even that much more fun for me to write. Thanks! :)

And chapter 14, Tara's enduring quite a bit of introspection. She really has seemed to let her confidence be shaken by this. Not by losing Willow, but more so by letting her guard down in the first place.

I wanted to indeed get that across. Like I said before, both of them blame themselves for what's happened, though they each have different reasons for doing so.

And Obi-Wan has a secret love? I think I missed that somewhere. Although I did read something once that claimed that he was secretly in love with Anakin, once Anakin got to be older. I think. Is that what that's about?

Oh, no. :blush Nothing like that. Of course, you wouldn't hear about it since its mainly an EU thing (most of the good tidbits are). The person I speak of is Siri Tachi, a EU Jedi that many fans have compared to a certain Vampire Slayer that we all know and love. I do have plans to bring Buffy (and Faith, too) into this saga, as well. :)

Anyway, a good couple of updates; you seem to be cruising right along with this story.

Yup. Unfortunately, my "cruising", such as it is, is going to need to slow down, as my laptop died over the weekend, thus forcing me to spend the majority of my posting time at college. (Though, ironically, I went from having nothing for Chapter Fifteen before that to almost having it done after. Heh. Whoever said anger doesn't solve anything never met me.)

Thanks for reading.

Here's Chapter Fifteen, folks. Enjoy! :D!

Image

Chapter Fifteen

Nute Gunray sat on the Queen’s throne, rubbing his temple in thought with one hand as he fought a losing battle to stop the increasingly obvious shaking of his other hand. He wished, not for the first time, that he was somewhere else. Anywhere else. It did not matter where. As long as it was far, far away from anything that could harm him, he would be happier than a overzealous grub who had the largest stockpile of food.

He hadn’t wanted this. Not if this was the price he had to pay for it. And now, with the Queen and her Jedi allies back on the planet and one of the two rogue Jedi in their midst, the possibility of ending up dead was that much greater than any potential reward.

He had to have an escape plan. Something that could get him out of this situation if things turned out as bad as he feared they were going to get.

He thumbed the communication switch, and a few moments later, a hologram of Daultay Dofine appeared in front of him. “Yes, Viceroy?”

“Captain, send a tech team from the ship down to the surface,” Gunray ordered, feeling a thin film of perspiration form on his brow as he struggled to control himself. Best not to let Dofine know how agitated he appeared. Dofine was rather paranoid enough. “Have them begin modifications to the Lapiz Cutter. I want it capable of flight without assistance from the Control Computer by the end of the day.”

The order clearly surprised Dofine. ”Viceroy, I do not believe that is a wise idea. Aside from the fact that such a task would take more time than you specified, there is also the fact that to do so shows a lack of faith on your part to the entire planet. To show that you could be driven away from your claim by a force that is not only insignificant to our droid forces but is made up of primitives shows that…”

Gunray slammed his fist down on the armrest of the throne in a clearly uncharacteristic display of anger. “I do not care how it makes me appear in the eyes of others, as long as I am alive to swallow the humiliation. Now do it.”

The hologram of Dofine flickered as it dissipated and Gunray went back to having his private heart attack. Despite the situation, and how confident he had appeared in front of Lord Sidious, he knew that the task at hand was the reprisal that he always knew would come. He only hoped that the droids would be enough to stop them all. Once the Queen signed the treaty, all would be well.

And then there was the second Sith. And the Jedi prisoner.

Gunray brought his attention back to the present as he saw Rune Haako approached. “Yes?”

Hakko looked at Gunray with what could only be described as a curious glance mixed with the fear that he was apparently unable to hide as effectively as the Viceroy was. “If I may be so bold, Viceroy, I would have to agree with Dofine. Any rash action on our part would only serve to undermine what we have accomplished here thus far.”

Gunray affixed Haako with a stare, and was not surprised to find he took several steps backward. Haako was no more brave than he was, and he had much less experience in concealing his cowardice. “Need I remind you that it was rash action on our part that caused us to get into this situation in the first place? And was it not you that said that we should not have made this bargain to begin with? You seem to have a history of tucking your tail between your legs and running, Rune. Would you prefer that we allow ourselves to be captured, hmm? Brought before the Senate and have everything that we have worked for so long to acquire taken away from us?”

Gunray’s words were having a powerful effect on Haako. “No…no, Viceroy. I am merely suggesting…”

Gunray was off the throne before Haako could finish speaking, shuffling towards his lieutenant angrily shaking his fist. “Let me state this to you, Haako. Dofine will not intimidate me. You will not intimidate me. Not even Lord Sidious will intimidate me. I am the master of my destiny. No one else. And if I see fit to abandon Naboo if it means my continued survival, I will do so.”

“But…remember Monchar,” Haako sputtered. “What happened to him when he…defied Sidious.”

Gunray’s anger lost some of the fire that had fueled it at the thought of learning of Monchar’s death. “Indeed, you are correct. And we have the instrument of his destruction here with us. We must be careful if we hope to survive this…”

He trailed off as he noticed that Haako was no longer looking at him, his gaze instead at the archway to the room, where the horned and tattooed Sith stood, apparently taking in the conversation with a vested interest. Gunray fumed at the thought. He was normally a private humanoid, and was not accustomed to having his actions monitored. Although he was often on edge when it came to Lord Sidious’ infrequent visits, the fact that his apprentice was here made him even more worried. He did not care to think about what the two discussed in secret.

“Well, what do you want?” he spoke, attempting to conceal his anger. “Shouldn’t you be with the prisoner awaiting the arrival of the Jedi?”

Maul fixed Gunray with a stare. “They will not reach her.”

Gunray blew out a deep breath. What had poisoned the local water supply recently that had given those around him an infallible belief in their own abilities? “You cannot seriously suggest that they will not reach the prisoner, are you? Even if we have two thousand fully deployed droids between the palace entrance and her room, they will find some way to get to her. We should have her killed now while you go and deal with the others personally…”

Suddenly Gunray felt his throat constrict. He struggled to breathe, but could not pass fresh oxygen into his lungs. He collapsed to his knees and looked to Haako, only to find him similarly afflicted. He passed his gaze back to Maul, whose arm was outstretched and closing, almost as if he was the one causing their air passages to close.

Gunray knew he had made a mistake, and that he was about to pay for it with his life. He was thus never more thankful for the incoming communications signal from the guard force stationed outside the hanger. He felt the pressure on his throat ease and quickly got to his feet, straightening his robes and breathing in heavily.

Once he was in full control of his faculties, he pressed the button that would transmit the message to the inset wall panel. The image that appeared on it was enough to have him wish that Maul was crushing his throat again.

Naboo soldiers were firing at the droid forces. Others piloted landspeeders that attacked the nearby AAT’s. And he was sure that he saw several of them slip pass the guards and sneak into the hanger.

Gunray couldn’t believe it. “I thought that the battle was going to take place far from here. This is too close.”

Haako stepped up beside him. “Even if they could get fighters off, they will be no match for the Droid Control Ship. We will smash them without fail.”

Gunray pursed his lips. “Perhaps.” He turned to look at Maul. “And as for you, I would suggest…”

He paused as he realized that Maul was no longer in the room. ”Good riddance,” he thought. Gunray did not like the Sith Lord, but he knew that he was capable of dealing with the matter. This left him with the opportunity to find a way to figure out a way to get out of this.

He returned to the throne and thumbed the communications switch. “Dofine, have the tech shuttle land on the outskirts of the city, furthest away from the area of the battle.”

”Battle, sir?”

“Do not question me!” Gunray roared. “Just direct their shuttle to a safer landing zone. And activate the droid forces in the planes. It is time to end this fiasco.”

”One way or another,” he thought as he flicked the communication switch off and turned to Haako. “Well, would you prefer to remain here? Or do you wish to continue living?”

Haako didn’t need to be told twice. He was halfway to the arch before Gunray had finished the questioned. After a few moments, Gunray turned to follow, all thoughts about the battles going on outside pushed aside.

**

Willow could feel it through the Force. Something was happening nearby. And she had no doubt that the majority of the beings in the palace were now focused on it.

She had to move now.

It had taken some effort, but she had managed to control her emotions enough to tap into the Force and subtly begin to work on her bonds. She tested link after link, searching for the weak spot that she knew lay within. She reached out and felt the connection between the cool metal of the binders and her flesh. She began to drive a wedge between them, forcing them open.

Her thoughts turned to Tara, how she was going through so much in the past few days, and that it was all because of her. She promised herself that if they got out of this alive, she would be a more diligent student and not cause the two of them to get into so much trouble.

She panicked, thinking that her distraction would cause her to lose her focus in the Force. She was thus surprised to find that, with a faint click and a rattling clatter, the binders fell to the ground and she was free.

The noise must have alerted the droid guards outside, as the door opened and they stepped into the room, blasters drawn and pointed in her direction.

Acting on instinct, Willow extended her hand, sending a Force Push at the droids which sent them flying out the door and into the wall outside, collapsing into a heap of messed up parts.

Getting to her feet and running outside, Willow suddenly realized how vulnerable she was. She didn’t have her lightsaber anymore, and if she was right, then the entire area was likely to be filled with blaster fire and bodies everywhere. She had to defend herself, but with what?

She looked at the droids, noticing one of their blasters. ”What am I thinking?! Using a blaster? Tara wouldn’t approve of it. She hates guns. HATES THEM!”

Willow realized, however, that she had no choice. If she didn’t take the blaster, she wasn’t going to get very far. She reached down to pick up the blaster, noting how uncomfortable she felt holding it. She felt as if she was disrespecting Tara once again by clutching the weapon. Her Master had an intense fear of blasters and slugthrowers stemming back to her own apprenticeship, when she had taken a shot directly to the chest by a small time criminal slicer. She had told Willow that she had almost died from that incident, and that only her Master, a quick trip to a nearby hospital and immersion in a bacta tank had kept her from suffering any permanent damage.

”I’m sorry, Tara,” she thought. ”I know you won’t like this, but I think you’ll like a splattered Willow even less.”

She made her way down the corridor, the blaster firmly clenched in her hand.

**

Tara sliced a droid in half and watched as it clattered to the floor, looking up in time to see the last of the fighters take off. She noted, however, that one had sustained a hit and was now spinning to the ground. She felt sorry for the unfortunate pilot, but realized that there was nothing she could have done.

Shutting down her lightsaber, she heard the Queen say that the Viceroy was most likely in the throne room, and the order from the Captain to head out. The thought made her happy. Once they got there, she would find out where in the palace that Neimoidian slime had put Willow, and then she would make him regret taking her.

The thoughts surprised her, as they treaded dangerously close to the dark side. At the moment, she wasn’t interested in maintaining a check on her emotional state. All that mattered was getting Willow back.

Something else disturbed her. One of her recent dreams had been a situation similar to this. She hadn’t told Master Qui-Gon about her visions, particularly because they involved his apparent demise at the hands of some unknown demon creature. Not only that, but also because it gave her concern for Willow’s safety a more obvious emotional connection. And Master Qui-Gon would never approve of that.

As she joined the others in walking towards the blast door, she heard Qui-Gon tell Anakin to stay where he was. She couldn’t help but smile at that. She knew there was something special about this boy, much like she knew that there was something special about Willow. She only hoped that the Council would change their minds. This boy deserved to be a Jedi.

The blast door ahead of them opened, and Tara froze. Standing in front of the group was a dark cloaked being whose head raised and peered at the beings in front of him. The yellow in his eyes burned like twin binary stars, and she felt them bore into her soul, exposing her deepest secrets to him.

It made her sick.

The Queen and the other soldiers moved off to the side, while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan stepped forward. She moved to join them, but Qui-Gon’s voice broke through her clouded mind.

“Master Maclay, go find Willow. We’ll take care of this.”

“But…” Tara began, but stopped when Qui-Gon turned and fixed her with a glare. She nodded in silent agreement, and moved off. As she did, she realized that she should have said something. It was quite likely that Master Qui-Gon wouldn’t survive his encounter. Then again, her dreams said that Willow was in obvious danger. The logic of the situation, however, was that Willow was already dead.

”If she is, I want to see for myself,” Tara thought. ”At least then I can have closure. I’ll never be able to forgive myself, but at least I can feel justified in my worrying.”

She moved to join the Queen’s group, only to stop again as a trio of destroyer droids appeared, unfolded and began to fire. Ducking behind a crate, she withdrew her lightsaber from her belt, hesitating as she moved to thumb the activation switch. She couldn’t deal with the destroyers on her own. And Master Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were too busy dealing with the demon.

She heard several of the Queen’s troops cry out as they were hit and knew that she had to act. Getting to her feet and raising her lightsaber, she began to advance on the droids, blocking the shots that came too close. It suddenly occurred to her that she had no idea what she was doing. Sure, she was very much aware of the fact that she was moving to deal with the droids, but how she would accomplish this task was another matter. The closer she got, the more likely that one of them would break through her defenses.

As Tara ducked behind another crate to reassess the situation, she heard another burst of blaster fire. Cautiously raising her head, she saw one of the fighters moving across the hanger, green bursts erupting from its forward mounted laser cannons. Each shot impacted directly against one of the droids, overpowering their deflector shields and blowing them apart.

”But how…?” she thought. Then it hit her. It must have been Anakin. The nine year old certainly had a knack of doing the right thing at the right time.

Tara moved to join the Queen’s group as they headed off down the corridor to the throne room.

”Hold on, Willow. I’m coming.”

Hi Sith.

Nute Gunray - what a wimp! I think he's realised that he's not strong enough to play with the 'big boys'.

I'm pretty sure that Tara wont mind Willow using a blaster in this case. Lets hope that Willow meets up with the Queen's party before Darth Maul realises she's gone.

So, onto the main event! Can't wait for your next update.

SithLordWiccan,

I really enjoyed your story so far, I read it all just now and all I can say is brilliant!
During my hopping from post to post I came across one of yours that was a spoiler...
I haven't read the replies to that post, so this may have been asked before. Although being in a W/T board where pretty much the ending IS HAPPY, I got the feeling that with one of them going dark , we might never get them to the happy stage until maybe after episode 6? I know I know it's too far ahead, but it just got me thinking...
Anyway, I can't wait for more,

G'day, Sith.

Ahh Nute, you spineless little grub. Who knows, that might even be a biological fact! It's a wise little toady who knows when to abandon all pretext of pride, and run for the hills with your tail tucked between your legs.

Not so smart adopting a testy tone with a Sith Lord though, I think. If the attack had held off for a little longer, Darth Maul might have saved the good guys the time and expense of a trial. As it is, the little rat is making a break for it.

Which in itself raises a little issue: are we divulging from the movie here? Because unless he has to turn back, oh say due to an escaped redheaded Padawan, he won't be in the Throne Room for Padme and co. to confront.

Speaking of which, thank god Willow had the sense to snaffle one of the battle droids' blasters. This is soon to be a war zone after all, and you never want to be unarmed in one of them.

I liked that you gave Tara a reason for disliking firearms too, rather than simply saying that she hates guns. It brings her character to life just that little bit more.

Now, do we get to see any more of the confrontation between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, or will that play out off-screen, as it were? Either way, I'm looking forward to more!

Cheers,
Paul.

This is a realy great fic and I realy enoy reading it. I hope to see lots more!

The logic of the situation, however, was that Willow was already died.

I realy hate to be the English Police but you used the word "Died" when you should have used "Dead."

Sahugani quickly looks for cover. When the author eventualy locates and over turns the rock he was hiding under he begs for his life, "Please don't hurt me!"
"Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, it's cruel, and that's why there's us. Champions. Doesn't matter where we come from or what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as if the world is as it should be, to show it what it can be." -- Angel

Dianneswillowtree: Yeah, I know a thing or two about that 'verse. ;) Glad to see that you're enjoying the fic.

AlysonGoddess: Glad you like the update. :)

caz: Yeah, Gunray's a whimp. But unlike the Gunray of the film, my Gunray realizes how far in the hole he's gotten and has a plan to get out of that mess. Of course, it won't work. Naturally.

About Willow using the blaster...that's something I plan on exploring in a bit more depth next chapter. :)

Arwen: Yay! New reader! Hooray! :party

Glad you're enjoying the fic. And yes,
the fact that one of our girls is going dark
is one of the big things in this fic. Who is it gonna be, though? Stick around and find out. :kdevil

Paul: Like I said, my Gunray, like most of the characters from the movies who got the shaft, is just a bit more smart. I never really got why he didn't run for the hills when the Queen and co. arrived. I mean, just because you've got a big ass army that could crush anything doesn't mean you shouldn't run when things go South. And yeah, I deliberately wrote that scene that way in order to showcase a very important fact: the thing that could destroy him in one way is something that saves him in another. I think it gives Gunray a bit more character other than simply being the typical "spineless toady".

are we divulging from the movie here? Because unless he has to turn back, oh say due to an escaped redheaded Padawan, he won't be in the Throne Room for Padme and co. to confront.

Oh, yes. I do have a plan for getting him back to the throne room that involves a certain redheaded Padawan. And what is it for you with pointing out plot developments that I wanted to keep secret? ;)

I liked that you gave Tara a reason for disliking firearms too, rather than simply saying that she hates guns. It brings her character to life just that little bit more.

I had a sinsiter reason for doing that, too. Much like I did with our girl's little nighttime talk back in chapter six and with Tara giving Willow her old lightsaber (though I hadn't really planned on it at the time), the whole incident with Tara getting shot is my way of adding an element from Buffy canon (in this case, the "incident" in "Seeing Red") to the story. The major difference, of course, is that Tara actually lives through it. I think when I get around to going through it in more detail next chapter, you'll realize how, much like in Buffy canon, Willow was affected by it.

Sahugani: Glad to see you're enjoying the fic.

I realy hate to be the English Police but you used the word "Died" when you should have used "Dead."

You know what the irony is? When I resubmitted this to Chris for betaing, that was the only thing he commented on. He didn't say it was out of place, though. He just said that it was misspelt. So all I did was correct it, without bothering to think about how well it fit. Thanks for that. :)

Or so I hope...

Sorry for taking so long to reply to this again.

Mean as it may be, I must say I like Darth Maul Force-choking the Neimodians. *eg*

And "Yay!" for Willow getting herself free! I really liked the passage with her feeling ill at ease about taking the blaster because of how she knows Tara feels about blasters. (Quite ironic to have Tara have a fear of guns, too, considering... well, I won't mention it, but I think you know which event on a certain TV show I'm thinking of. *hugs*)

Naturally, Tara thinking about how Anakin was something special and deserved to be a Jedi gave me a sting inside, given what we know will become of him...

As a minor quibble, I wouldn't say, "like twin binary stars," unless you want to suggest that Maulie has four eyes. ;) A binary star is already two stars.

Oh boy, the ending of this chapter has me on the proverbial edge of my seat once again! I'm sitting here gripping my mouse so hard that it can't be good for the mouse. (Warning - Sithy's fics can be dangerous to your hardware. ;) )

Looking forward to Chapter 16!

Well, it seems things never change. The battle droids are still dumb and Gunray is still a coward. Still, he of all people should have known better than to talk back to a Sith Lords. Sith Lords generally don't consider that to be acceptable behaviour. :)

Nice job on Willow getting free. I'm sure Willow had trouble picking up the blaster, but even Tara'd have to admit having one when you're otherwise unarmed and up against battledroids is pretty handy.

Then again, battledroids have just as good an aim as stormtroopers. :) Still, it'd be like getting into a fist-fight with a T-Rex. :)

Looks like the fight with Maul is coming up soon! :kdevil Good story!

notl33t: Well, as I hope to convey in the upcoming chapter, the use of blasters in that fashion is not something that Willow feels at all comfortable about.

Devi: It is indeed ironic that Tara has a fear of blasters, as it was my nod to the events of "Seeing Red" (minus, of coruse, the actual "Tara dying" part). And I'm glad that I have you on the edge of your seat. :)

Useful_Oxymoron: Yup. battle droids are dumb. And Gunray, while a coward, at least has a plan to get himself out of this mess, something that movie Gunray, at least in my opinion, never had.

I think that this chapter gives a bit more depth as to why Willow doesn't like using blasters. :)

Image

Chapter Sixteen

The battle droids blew apart in a shower of sparks, their body parts scattering across the hallway. And Willow, who was holding with both of her hands the blaster that was responsible for their destruction, look at the scene she was causing with disgust.

She wasn’t a warrior. She wasn’t much of anything. Although she often appeared to know what she was doing, much of her knowledge lay in books. She had always depended on Tara when it came to defending herself from others. Mostly, of course, because she rarely went with her on any mission that Tara considered “too dangerous”, and even when she did go, she was always kept out of the way whenever possible. Willow suspected that the reason that Tara thought so many missions were “too dangerous” was because of Tara’s overprotective nature that, while well meaning, was sometimes too smothering. Willow could certainly understand why she did it, and Tara’s training methods more than made up for it, but it was still a shake up for her to actually be fighting.

And especially with a blaster. She normally wouldn’t hesitate to use whatever tools were necessary in order to accomplish a task, but she had to draw the line somewhere. And that line had been drawn six months ago when, during a mission with Master Halcyon, she had suffered a serious blaster wound, an incident made even more horrifying for Willow when she found out that it was an errant bolt, fired at random by some small time slicer who had hoped to make a name for himself by offing some underworld kingpin at a local cantina on Taris.

Willow could recall the day easily. She had been meditating in the apartment that Master Halcyon had rented for the three of them, once again kept away from the danger. She had done this for an hour and a half when Master Halcyon sent her a message, telling her to meet him at the local medicenter.

It was there that she saw a nightmare: Tara was floating in a bacta tank, her eyes close, her hair free flowing and her breathing ragged. Above her left breast was a blaster wound that, even with the healing properties of bacta, looked rather serious. If Master Halcyon hadn’t been there to tell her that she would make a full recovery with intensive treatment, Willow would have sworn that her Master had died.

That image would haunt her dreams for many months afterward. She couldn’t eat. She couldn’t sleep. She couldn’t concentrate enough to meditate. Tara’s treatments had ended two days later, but she would need to be confined to a hoverchair for another three weeks and take regular bacta injections. She had also made a daily ritual of reassuring Willow that she was alright. But no matter how much she was cajoled and reassured, the images persisted.

That sort of thing, though a frightening experience, made Willow feel more attracted to her Master. For her to remain serene and calm in the face of such pain was a trait that she could apply to herself. Especially now, given the current state of affairs.

Sneaking down the corridor, she held the blaster close to her chest, hoping that she wouldn’t have to use it again.

***

Nute Gunray was a bundle of nerves, walking faster than he could have believed possible. Rune Haako followed behind him, though was more cautious in his steps. Gunray neither knew nor cared whether Haako would make it to the Lapiz Cutter. If he made it to the ship first, he would not hesitate to give the take off order and leave Haako behind. What he knew of the plot against the Republic would not be enough to bring the wrath of Lord Sidious down upon him. And besides, he could always find someone else to replace him.

And even if, through some miraculous means, Lord Sidious were indeed to find out what had happened this day…well, it was a big galaxy. There were planets far enough out of the way and enough credits in his personal accounts to ensure that he could live out the rest of his life in relative peace. Peace of body, at least. One way or the other, he would no longer be in peace when it came to his mind.

“Hurry up,” he hissed to Haako. “The Queen could be here any moment.”

***

Willow’s back was pressed against the wall, shocked at what she had seen further down the corridor. As she was walking down the hallway, she saw two figures moving at a rapid pace in the opposite direction were the two Neimoidians to whom she had been presented when she had been captured.

And they were running! She had to do something. This was her chance. She could strike them both down for what they did to her. To Tara. To this planet. And it would be right.

Or would it? The question made Willow waver. It was not a question as to the fact that the Neimoidians needed to pay for what they had done. Even if they hadn’t harmed her, even if they hadn’t harmed Tara, they had certainly caused enough grief for the Naboo, and all for the ridiculous notion of a tax break.

And even if she could bring herself to do it, how would it affect her? She had never killed anyone before. True, she had taken a life, but that was in self defense against people who had been out to kill her. The two Neimoidians, though having a massive droid army at their disposal, were hardly worthy of the honorific of “cold blooded aggressors.”

Willow suddenly realized that she didn’t have any real choice. She couldn’t just walk out of the palace, not with a battle going on in the streets. And she couldn’t stay inside the palace, either. There were droids here, as well. Not to mention that horned and tattooed Sith.

And that was something she had to let Tara know about. She would know how to handle it.

She held up the blaster and checked its power pack. It was still charged, but not fully. She also noted that it held no stun setting. No matter. If push came to shove, two shots would be enough to end the problem once and for all.

As for the lack of a stun setting…well, that would merely mean that the pain would be quick.

For everyone.

***

Gunray approached one of the large double doors that would lead out of the palace, a smile on his lips. No doubt the bulk of the Naboo force was now drawing the droids away from the area, which meant that both he and Haako would have a clear path to the Lapiz Cutter, which must have arrived by now.

As he reached to push the door release, he heard the unmistakable sound of a blaster shot coming from behind him, followed by the equally unmistakable howl from his Lieutenant. Turning, he was surprised to find Haako cowering on the floor, his hands upraised in a gesture of surrender. And further down the corridor…

Gunray felt his face pale as he watched the Jedi captive point her blaster directly at his chest.

“Don’t move!”

Gunray froze on the spot, raising his own hands. “You…you’re Jedi. You…you can’t think…”

Gunray was pleased to find that the Jedi’s face softened somewhat, though she still kept her death grip on the weapon. “You’re right. I am a Jedi. And even though you’ve hurt me, and especially since you’ve hurt Ta…my Master, I don’t want to hurt you. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to let you get away with what you’re doing.”

A spark of insight flashed through Gunray’s mind. It was clear that this child had no idea about the breadth of the situation. If he could find someway of shifting the blame for the entire situation over to someone else, he could perhaps escape from the situation with his life after all.

But how to do so without bringing the wrath of Lord Sidious down upon him?

The Jedi pointed the blaster at the prone form of Haako. “Get up!”

Muttering silent curses, Haako did as he was instructed, adjusting his miter and turning to Gunray, who merely stared back into his Lieutenant’s eyes.

The Jedi, meanwhile, gestured with the blaster in her hands. “Let’s move.”

***

Hiding in the shadows was something that Tara was used to. She had gone undercover in the underworld of Coruscant. She had performed dangerous assignments on Nar Shaddaa, considered by many to be just as perilous, if not more, than Coruscant. She had traveled from one end of the civilized galaxy to the other, taking part in more dangerous situations than this. What made it different?

Even before the question finished registering in her brain, she knew the answer. Willow.

Tara was surprised to find that her initial depression about the situation had mutated. No longer was she stifled by her insecurities. She was focused on a single goal: to find Willow, rescue her, and make sure that she would be well protected.

And yet…Tara could not help but feel somewhat stifled. Going to rescue Willow meant leaving both Master Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan alone to face that demon. And she did not feel comfortable about that at all. Her dream had been rather prophetic in nature, signifying that either Willow or Qui-Gon would fall at the hands of that creature.

Hopefully Tara could rescue Willow and return to the hanger before anything happened.

Peering around the corridor, she spotted a pair of droids running down the corridor, along with the hum of nearby blaster fire. Keeping her back to the wall, Tara began to silently walk down the corridor, doing her best to keep quiet.

Stretching out with the Force, she tried to pick out Willow’s presence. She cringed as the onslaught of emotions hit her. Fear. Rage. Despair. The negative emotions crested into her mind and threatened to drown it in a sea of relentless torment.

”Enough,” she thought, breaking the connection. ”Willow is counting on you.”

Slipping around the corner, she was surprised to find a pair of battle droids on the floor near the wall. Approaching them, she reached out with her foot and gently tapped it.

”Definitely deactivated,” she thought. ”But how…?”

She turned and looked into the room that the droids had obviously been guarding. Looking inside, she saw four pairs of binders on the floor, all of which were affixed to the floor.

“Willow,” Tara whispered. Rushing forward, she took each of the binders in her hand, running her finger across the metal. As she did, she felt a residual feeling of pain. A shiver ran up her spine as she turned to find two misshapen pieces of metal lying near the door. Walking over to them, she reached down to pick them up.

Tara immediately recognized what they were. “Oh, Willow.”

The tears that she had been trying to keep buried began to rise again. Tara shut her eyes in a futile attempt to stop them from flowing. Even so, a single drop ran down her cheek.

And when Tara opened her eyes once more, the indecisiveness, depression and fear that had followed her for the past several days vanished with it. In its place was the Tara she had once been: confident in her abilities as a warrior, knowing exactly what to do and driven by a purpose that was beyond her control.

This Tara would find Willow. This Tara would save Willow.

And this Tara would be accepting to Willow’s love, which she could, and would, no longer deny.

Oh yes she can. :kdevil I like willow's depiction as a 'book-jedi'. Especially since Tara keeps Willow from the more dangerous assignment, which keeps her experience somewhat limited. A dangerous mirroring with Anakin here, though not as oppulant.

Yikes, I can see why Willow hates blasters, poor Tara. A mirroring of Tara's death in Seeing Red, maybe? :( Luckily this Tara survived. :pray

Like the mention of Taris too. Heh, according to Empire at War, that place is still a bit, even 4000 years onward. I guess Star Destroyers really do pack a punch, even the really old models.

highlandlass25: Yeah. The Tara of the beginning of the fic is long gone. Take Charge Tara is on the scene. Though, to be fair, she wasn't always the meek Jedi she was at the start. Being confronted with your parentage in the manner Tara was would do things to you. And while Take Charge Willow may be "*rawr*", I think its been proven how much it can backfire on her.

notl33t: I wouldn't necessarily say that she's handling it. It's a necessary evil, though, if she wants to live. As for Tara, just wait till the next chapter. ;)

Dianneswillowtree: The love is certainly coming forth.

Useful_Oxymoron: The relationship I have between Willow and Tara is mean to evoke the one between Anakin and Obi-Wan in a lot of ways, though I would say that Willow isn't as emotionally out of control as Anakin got. She knows when she's made a mistake. Anakin doesn't.

Yes, Tara's situation was meant to mirror the situation in "Seeing Red". It's my little nod to Buffy canon. ;) As for Taris, I was searching for a planet name, and that came to mind. I knew you'd get a kick out of it, being the uber god of KOTOR that you are.

Devi Crystalseeker: Glad you liked the ending. :)
