Tara Maclay-Rosenberg was keyed up but not alert, shaky, but sleepier than she wanted to be; sometimes caffeine can do that. Normally a Mountain Dew with dinner and a cup of guarana tea after would be something she’d never do, but she absolutely had to stretch out her energy this evening.
Both daughters were in safely in bed now and Tara had grabbed a quick but very thorough shower, no warmer than it had to be, poured herself into her most comfortable sweat suit, and collapsed in front of the TV, mumbling.
“At last, some slack time, and I’ve got enough of a caf jag going that I probably won’t fall asleep before Willow gets back. And some of my colleagues say a floating theater arts teacher doesn’t work as hard as ‘academic’ teachers during final exams. Hah!”
“Three nights in a row I’ve been zonked before she’s even gotten home, and the rest of the past two weeks weren’t a whole lot better. Seems these days we only see each other in our sleep.”
Tara stopped channel-surfing for a full minute while she laughed at her own remark. Clalming down she said to herself, “That wasn’t funny. That wasn’t anything. I’m hallucinating from fatigue and loneliness, mixed with a touch of frustration-of-that-sot . But hey, I know as well as she does that the expansion is needed for the health of the business and to keep up with the Herlihys and the Harrises. We’re a family, so we all have to be somewhere near the same income, for the children’s sake. Shut up, Maclay.”
The lovely ash-blonde took a deep breath and calmed herself. She knew things would settle down again; like any small business, Willow’s consulting firm, Rougemont Inc. needed an occasional shake-up. And the whole gang were well on their way to becoming quietly, comfortably, semi-rich. Xander Harris’s general contracting business was a steady money-maker, while wife Anya was looking to open a fourth Magic Box location. Buffy’s publishers seemed mainly concerned with how much the sales of each novel would exceed the previous one, while Angel’s steady work as an addiction counselor kept them in benefits. Cordelia Bergerac had landed a fast-rising second husband, but to protect her options she and best friend Harmony Levinsohn had their Internet and radio beauty business going quite nicely. It was only part-time for either of them, but Harmony’s share well exceeded husband Jonathan’s academic salary.
“And meanwhile, we’re all doing okay as parents too; of course, Harmony’s hit the jackpot there. Apollo’s tears, first she loses Elisa after that terrible third pregnancy, then suddenly along with the boys she gets Kharissa added in.”
“I want to say, “‘Poor Faith” ’ but she died doing what she loved, : fighting the bad guys. We should all be so lucky to be where we feel loved when we die; I had it once, hope I have it again.
She thought about Jenny, Anya, Fred, how horrifying and crazy it had to have been for them. “Well, none of us ever want to talk about it, but it’s especially understandable for them. Then again, who’d really want to hear it?”
Tara’s channel-surfing reached NBC Universal Classic Television. and she was brought up short by the Festival Song in Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man on Double Chiller Theatre. The bass vocalist was just starting the first verse:
“Come one and all and sing a song,
“Fa-ro-la-fa-ro-li,
“For life is short but death is long,
“Fa-ro-la-fa-ro-li!”
“Well, just over three earth years isn’t all that long, given a certain redhead who always has to see how far she can go, along with some ancient gods who knew I had some unfinished business. And tough as life can be, I’m glad about it.”
“And I think that same hard-working redhead is pulling into the driveway right now. Hope she needs more than just a hot soak and some shut-eye, because I’m in the mood to pay attention to somebody tonight.”
