Blameburner, you are so cruel!!!!! : -->>:

Now, this is the way it should be, Tara's love saving Willow.

This is a powerful story. I hope you won't keep us hanging too long.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

Part 10

Postby blameburner » Sun May 26, 2002 3:54 pm

Ah yes, an update. I had originally envisioned this section as two parts, but knowing how y'all feel about cliffhangers, I condensed. Um, don't think though that this means you're cliffhanger free. Sorry.

BTW, I got a bit, I don’t know, corny in this scene. I hope it works the way I envisioned it. I’m a romantic at heart, what can I say? Here’s to hoping you don’t mock me too much for it!

I'm hoping to have the next chapter done and up by Monday night, as I start my new job on Tuesday and I don't know how much writing my schedule will allow after that. But with the holiday, I can't promise anything.

In any case, we've got about, oh, two more chapters after this (though they'll probably be multi-parters), and then the happy happy joy joy epilogue, which will also probably be, ahem, multi-parters. Hehe.

***Thanatopsis – I love sarcasm! Really!!! I was just teasing… :)

***fidds - *sends fidds a package of Lee Press-On Nails to replace ones lost during last update*

***capricornmist – Hehe. Keep holding on. I swear it will be worth it. And breath! Don’t forget to breath!!!

***Tiggrscorpio – Would I ever let anything bad happen to Willow permanently? No. Definitely no to that question.

***ExtraFlameyWT – See, I don’t know if it’s your rooting or what, but my Cubbies just keep winning!!! Yay! So, here’s your update. And I am not evil! Just mildly satanic. ;)

***Jennpurr – No, you said in the story, so no going back on that now. I’m telling you, though, I had even bought a brand new red thong for your lap dance. Now what am I gonna do with that?

***LeatherQueen – Hehe. Yes, there will be lots of happy lovely sexy Tara Willow time… eventually… with the… and then they’ll… :)

***xita – It’s all about the love. What can I say? I’m a sap.

***Drakkenfyre – Oh, good! Now I have something to do with the thong I bought for the lap dance I was supposed to give to Jennpurr! *runs over to drawer to pull out thong*

***breaking – Have faith! Have hope! All is right with the world! Well, maybe not the world, but at least the world in my head.

***Scout – Confidence! At last someone with confidence! Yay! Thanks for your comment on the moving back and forth between scenes. I was getting whiplash writing so much back and forth, but I thought the pacing was appropriate. Yet I wasn’t sure how it turned out, so I’m glad at least you liked it!

***The Rose24 – Cruel? *whimpers and runs off to hide in corner* I swear, happy endings all around, ‘k? Eventually.

Title: The Guardian – Part 10

Author: blameburner

Feedback: Sure… Always a plus

Summary: This is just a nice little story about two witches, facing the apocalypse – again - and love.

Spoiler Warning: Up to and including "Normal Again" in Season 6 – but really nothing major.

Disclaimer: Not my characters, but oh how I wish they were! Joss, blah blah, ME, blah blah.

Rating: NC-17 (I've given up any pretense that it's anything less)

Pairings: W/T… duh. Everyone’s will be here at some point.

Notes: I know nothing about magic, except what I learned on BtVS. I am totally, completely pulling this out of my arse!!! I am making it up, cuz I'm too stupid to know better, and too lazy to research it. I mean absolutely no offense if I get it wrong, which I undoubtedly will. Please forgive me. Okay, disclaimer over.

Angst: Um... yeah, there's angst, I'm sorry. But I promise it will all be okay in the end.

Part 10

"So is anyone hungry? I'm hungry. Who else is hungry?" Anya asked as the triumphant Scoobies made their way to the Magic Box.

"We can eat after we pick up Willow and Tara, honey," Xander said placatingly.

"But I'm hungry now!" Anya whined, taking on a voice that reminded Giles of a petulant child. And really, that's what she is, Giles thought. Anytime he got upset with Anya's temper tantrums, he reminded himself that while she may have been a demon for a thousand years, she was still just a toddler when it came to being human.

Buffy was going to make a sarcastic comment about Anya's one track mind, but then her stomach started growling and she couldn't deny the fact that Anya had a point. But Buffy shook her head. Pick up Wil and Tare, then eat, she ordered herself, to which she nodded her own head in acknowledgment of the order received.

"Let's just get the witches and then we can all go for a nice big post-apocalypse breakfast," Buffy finally said outloud.

"Ooo. Does the post-apocalypse breakfast come with bacon? Or is that the pre-apocalypse breakfast? I can never remember," Xander joked.

"No, Xander, the pre-apocalypse breakfast comes with hash browns and toast," Giles said straight-faced.

"Giles!" Buffy said, looking at the Watcher in amusement.

"Giles made a funny," Xander grinned. "Oh God! It's the end of the world!" he yelled in mock horror.

Giles just smiled, and then laughed. Pretty soon they all were laughing. Yes, they definitely needed sleep.

They were still laughing when they reached the front door of the Magic Box.

"Wil! Tara! We did it!" Buffy called happily as she bounded through the door, but her happiness was short lived. Buffy stopped dead in her tracks, her blood running cold at the sight before her.

"Hey, Slayer, move your big butt!" Xander teased as he practically ran right into Buffy's back. When he noticed she was frozen in place, he peered around to look at her face. A chill ran down his spine, and then he followed her line of sight to where it ended in the middle of the room.

Giles and Anya were both giggling when they walked in, but then they came upon the same sight that had drained both Buffy and Xander's faces of color.

"Oh God," Giles said, his breath catching in his throat.

Tara looked up from the floor with Willow cradled protectively in her lap, her face swollen from the tears she had obviously been shedding. Tara felt as if she had been crying forever, and the only reason she had stopped was that she had run out of tears.

She saw the looks of horror on their faces and it would have made her heart ache if her heart wasn't already broken. Tara looked down at her love, who was still curled up with her knees tucked into her stomach, still mumbling nonsense, still rocking gently even in Tara's lap.

The only thing that had changed in the last half hour was that Willow's eyes had closed, and were now scrunched tightly as if Willow was trying to not see whatever was going on in her mind. Tara was grateful though for that, because she could no longer bear to see Willow's unfocused gaze. Tara had looked into those beautiful green eyes, but those same eyes had looked right through her as if she wasn't even there, and if Tara's heart was already been broken, that had ground the pieces into dust.

Anya went over to Xander and buried her face in his chest, and his arms came up to comfort her even as he felt his eyes well up with tears. Buffy just kept staring, unable to move or even think.

Giles walked over and got down on his knees. He looked at Willow, and then at Tara.

"I-I-I d-don't know w-what's w-w-wrong," Tara said, her words full of anguish. "I-I must p-passed out, and w-when I w-w-woke u-u-up..." Tara trailed off, shutting her eyes tightly and inwardly cursing her stutter. She needed to be strong, for Willow. She had to explain what happened so they could find a way to fix it.

Tara took in several deep breaths, and when she opened her eyes, they were full of strength.

"When I woke up, I found her like this," Tara began again, and Giles noted the absence of her stutter. Giles' respect for Tara grew even more, if that were possible.

"Her eyes were open before, but unfocused. Like she wasn't really here. She just keeps rocking and mumbling incoherently," Tara explained. "It's almost like..." Tara's face went pale as the memory that had been tickling the back of her mind earlier finally surfaced with full force. If Tara had been standing, she would have been knocked down by the intensity of it.

"Almost like what, Tara?" Giles asked, his voice harsher than he had intended as it was tinged with fear.

Tara looked pleadingly into Giles' eyes, too overcome with grief to speak. She looked down at Willow, and her heart broke all over again.

Giles looked at Tara, then at Willow, his mind racing as he tried to understand. He couldn't put the pieces together, and it was panicking him. He was about to demand that Tara explain what it was almost like when he heard a sort of disembodied voice behind him. He knew it was Buffy's voice, but it was so emotionless and empty he almost didn't recognize it.

"It's almost like when you had your brain sucked by Glory," Buffy said quietly to Tara. Her eyes met Tara's and when they did, the dam holding back Buffy's pain broke and her tears fell freely. Tara just nodded and pulled Willow even closer.

Understanding finally dawned on Giles as all the pieces came together. He hung his head, angry at himself, and said quietly, "I should have realized." He looked up at Tara, guilt and anguish written all across his face. "Tara, did you feel any change in Willow while you were casting?"

Tara thought for a moment, the whole experience somewhat of a blur. She remembered chanting with Willow, then a burst of energy so powerful she didn't think she could handle it. Then she remembered Willow's voice, bringing her back, helping her focus. After that...

"Yes, I... The light was all around me, filling me," Tara explained as she remembered. "It was all I could see, all I could feel. But then... I felt Willow's hand go limp in mine, and it brought me back to the present. I don't know how, but I felt it. Willow was slumped forward, exhausted, but I felt this lingering... fear. And evil. Then I heard Xander on the walkie talkie and I squeezed Willow's hand and sent everything I had at The Guardian."

"She was fighting him. He knew. He had to have known, sensed Willow's darkness, and changed the magic. She obviously didn't give into it, but the war in her mind would have been tremendous, and..." Giles trailed off, not wanting to say what needed to be said.

"What? Dammit Giles, and what?" Tara demanded, her pain and fear pushing her over the edge.

"And all the demons The Guardian drained energy from and poured evil into went insane," Giles said quietly.

Understanding hit Tara in a wave, and she screamed. "No!"

Xander looked at Giles in confusion, but Anya just stared ahead crying silently. And Buffy...

Giles was yanked to his feet and up into the air before he even realized Buffy had moved. She shook him hard, her face full of rage. "What do you mean?" she demanded. "Willow is not a demon!"

Giles was helpless as his feet dangled nearly a foot off the ground. He looked apologetically at Buffy, his heart aching for the pain she was so obviously feeling. He really couldn't have forced her to put him down if he'd wanted to, but right now he didn't care anyway, and was willing to let Buffy take her frustration out on him.

"Buffy..." Xander said.

"No! I want to know what in the hell Giles means!" Buffy shouted. Then the fact that she was holding the man she loved like a father up in the air hit her, and she put him down, albeit not gently.

Giles stumbled a bit, and Buffy crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him.

"Being a demon isn't the problem," Giles explained. "You don't have to be a demon, it just takes the right combination of circumstances. It takes pouring evil into someone touched by darkness who is channeling magic, and a draining of energy."

"Demons aren't channeling magic," Buffy said, still not understanding.

"Well, in a way they are, though not consciously. A demon's very existence in this dimension is mystical in nature, their presence here a result of magical forces," Giles said.

"So?" Buffy said impatiently.

"So," Giles said, "When Tara sent the energy at The Guardian, she sent everything she had inside of her. She was connected to Willow, which means she also sent everything inside of Willow, including her dark energy. Willow was drained in effectively the same was the demons were when The Guardian drained them."

"But I thought he poured evil into the demons after he drained them, and that's what made them go insane? So when in the hell would he have had time to do that?" Buffy yelled.

Giles thought for a moment, then said, "Tara said she remembered feeling a lingering evil just before she sent the energy... Dear Lord," Giles said, fully realizing what Willow must have gone through. He looked down at the redhead, amazed that she could have fought that much darkness.

"Dear Lord what? Giles!" Buffy shouted, stepping up to Giles threateningly.

"He must have used some of the evil he was focusing into the Hellmouth on Willow when he changed the magic," he said. "Intense, pure evil from the entire universe."

"Oh God," Xander said, looking down at his best friend. "Willow."

Buffy started pacing, her rage boiling over. "Stupid sonofabitch! That bastard! I'd go kill him if I hadn't already killed him! Dammit!" Then she turned her rage on Giles. "Why in the hell didn't we know this could happen?"

It was the same question Giles had been asking himself for the last several minutes. He should have been smarter, figured out before-

"Giles!"

Buffy's shout snapped him out of his internal self-criticism. He looked at Buffy with tears running down his face.

"I just didn't think... I didn't think it would take so long... or that it would be both Tara's and Willow's energy that was sent...I didn't put it all together," he said shamefully.

"It's my fault," Tara said weakly form the floor.

"No, Tara-" Buffy started, but Tara ignored her.

"I should have let go of her hand," Tara said.

"Tara, it wouldn't have mattered. You and Willow are connected on a spiritual level. Physical contact wasn't required," Giles said, trying to make her understand. "Besides..." he trailed off, his guilt deepening. "The binding spell should have prevented any potential drain into The Guardian."

"The binding spell didn't work?" Tara asked in confusion. "Then how-"

"I honestly don't know," Giles answered before Tara could finish asking the question.

"What do you mean it didn't work?" Buffy asked. "I killed him."

"Yes, I know, but I don't know how," Giles said. "Anya and I were interrupted before we could complete the spell. Yet somehow the energy Tara sent was enough to weaken him so you could kill him."

"Weaken him?" Xander said incredulously. "Did you see him? He was holding his head like it was bout to explode! And then all the demons started dying."

"Of course," Giles said, nodding in understanding. "The energy Tara sent must have been more powerful than we realized. It was pure light, filled with love. When the binding spell didn't work, the energy was sucked into The Guardian instead of just hitting him. That explains why the demons all died - The Guardian's connection with them would have transferred the light energy into them as well, and the infusion of light when mixed with dark was volatile."

"So, you're saying it was like a chemistry experiment gone bad?" Xander tried to put it into a perspective he could understand. Not that he understood chemistry, but still...

"Precisely. It tore them apart from the inside out," Giles said. "Still... it's strange. Tara shouldn't have had enough power to weaken The Guardian that much without the binding spell."

"Does it matter?" Buffy said coldly. "He's dead. Who cares how or why. He's dead, and Willow..."

Buffy couldn't finish the sentence. It was too painful. She walked over to the table and leaned on it with her arms, her head hanging down dejectedly.

Tara just stroked Willow's hair, racking her brain to find some way to bring Willow back. Tara had been thinking of hardly anything else since she found her love lying on the floor, but so far she hadn't come up with a thing. She thought of the spell Willow had used to bring her back, but knew it wouldn't work. The problem here wasn't that Willow's mind had been stolen. Willow was still in there, but Tara had no idea how to find her.

Giles started pacing. He searched his mind for anything that might help Willow. Buffy was right - Willow was their primary concern. Yet Giles couldn't let go of how they had defeated The Guardian. It didn't make sense, and that troubled him.

He shook his head and continued to pace, growing more and more frustrated. What's the use of having so much knowledge if I can't even save one of my daughter's? Giles asked himself.

The room was silent except for the sound of Giles pacing. Xander was holding Anya, still offering his girlfriend comfort. He had no idea how to help Willow, and he felt useless. The only thing he could do right now was hold his girlfriend.

He was worried about her, too. She hadn't said a word since they had walked into the Magic Box, which was unusual. Very unusual. She and Willow had never really gotten along all that well, although they had been managed to form a tentative friendship in the last few months. Still, Xander was surprised Anya was taking it so hard.

Suddenly Anya tore herself out of Xander's arms and ran over to Tara. She bent down, grabbed both sides of Tara's face, and kissed Tara full on the lips.

Tara was too stunned to move, or even blink. Everyone just stared wide-eyed in shock, unable to move.

Anya pulled back just as suddenly as she had kissed Tara, and looked into the blonde's eyes without letting go of her face. "See?" Anya asked.

Tara started sputtering, unable to comprehend what had just happened.

"Anya!" Giles shouted, reaching down to pull Anya up and away from Tara. Anya struggled in Giles' arms, and Giles put her into a choke hold to try and hold on to her. The ex-demon opened her mouth and bit down on Giles' forearm, forcing Giles to let go.

Buffy ran over to intervene, fully willing to beat some sense into Anya, but was stopped by Tara.

"No, Buffy! Wait!" Tara said forcefully.

Everyone turned to look at Tara, who had a completely bemused expression on her face. Tara looked from Buffy to Anya, and tilted her head in silent question towards the ex-demon. Buffy watched Tara and decided the witch had completely lost her mind.

Anya simply nodded in answer to Tara's question, the said, "Go on."

Tara grinned slightly, and looked down at her love. It was just crazy enough to work.

Tara leaned down and softly kissed Willow. She brushed her lips over the redhead's once, then again, easily and gently. Then Tara deepened the kiss, teasing Willow's mouth open. Tara poured every ounce of love she had into the kiss, every single thing she felt for the redhead who had stolen her heart. She kissed Willow with all the need, all the hope, and all the passion she had.

Finally, Tara pulled back and slid her palm along Willow's cheek. "Come on, baby," she called softly, "let me see those beautiful green eyes."

Everyone just stood there holding their breath, not understanding but hoping all the same.

"Willow, my love, I need you. Come back to me."

It seemed like an eternity passed, and then...

Willow's eyelids started to flutter. The mumbling had stopped with the first brush of Tara's lips, and now Willow had stopped rocking.

Ever so slowly, Willow opened her eyes.

Buffy, Giles, and Xander stood stunned, afraid to move lest they startle Willow. Anya had a broad grin on her face, and was shifting back and forth from foot to foot.

Willow's eyes closed briefly, then opened again, this time with more force. She looked up at Tara, who was beaming down at her.

"Tara?" Willow croaked, sounding much like the frogs she so feared.

"Welcome back, baby," Tara said, her voice heavy with emotion.

Buffy hugged Giles, who just continued to stare in disbelief. Anya grabbed Xander and kissed him hard, then pulled back and said, "See?"

"What happened?" Willow asked weakly, though her voice already sounded stronger.

Tara shushed her lover and placed a finger over her lips. "You were lost, but I found you." She looked up at Anya gratefully and added, "With a little help from our friends."

Tara looked back down at Willow and kissed her again, her heart nearly bursting when this time, Willow responded by kissing her back.

After a long moment, Tara broke the kiss, content just to be holding her girlfriend in her arms. Willow made a move to sit up, but Tara stopped her.

"Tara, I just want to sit up so I can see everyone without having to twist my head like I'm in The Exorcist," Willow griped good-naturedly. Tara relented slightly, but was still not convinced the redhead was strong enough to sit up.

"Baby, I'm fine," Willow said. Tara studied her for a moment and then nodded. She helped Willow sit up, but quickly pulled Willow up against her so the redhead's back was resting against Tara's chest. Willow murmured appreciatively at the contact, and sighed when Tara's arms wrapped around her stomach. Willow leaned back slightly and Tara rested her chin on Willow's shoulder.

"Thank you," Tara said to Anya, who simply smiled happily and nodded.

Now that it appeared Willow was back and safe, everyone wanted answers. Five sets of eyes turned towards the ex-demon, who cringed slightly.

"What?" Anya asked defensively. "You're looking at me like I just sprouted another head, and the head is actually Milton Berle's!"

"Um, An, honey," Xander said sweetly and a bit frightened at Anya's metaphor. "What just, um, happened?"

"Well, Prince Charming always had to kiss the princess to get her to wake up," Anya explained with a shrug of her shoulders.

"But that's a fairy tale!" Giles sputtered. At that moment, if Anya really had sprouted a second head that looked like Milton Berle, Giles really wouldn't have been surprised.

"Yeah, so?" Anya responded. "You think fairy tales aren't based in truth? They're legends, like any other."

Giles started to object, but then Tara reminded him, "Mr. Giles? The Gentlemen were a fairy tale, remember?"

Giles looked chagrined. Of course he remembered. He'd just forgotten. Giles threw his hands up in the air and sat down at the table, a smile slowly spreading across his face.

"So, Snow White is real?" Buffy asked. "Like there was really an evil queen who had a magic mirror and put Snow White to sleep with that poisoned apple thing?"

Anya gave Buffy a stern look. "There was no magic mirror! That whole thing was invented by Disney. She actually had a severed head sitting on her nightstand that she used to talk to, you know, for fashion advice and stuff," Anya said. "And for your information, Snow White was a whiny little bitch! If she'd just kept her grubby little paws off the queen's man, everything would have been fine! I mean, she already had seven sex slaves. Like she really needed one more!"

"Okay, scary visual place? Anyone?" Xander asked as the image of the Seven Dwarves in leather and chains filled his mind.

"Ah, those were the days," Anya said wistfully. When she got another round of strange looks, she said, "Not the sex slaves. The head! Those were the days when you could just cut off a man's head and keep it on your nightstand so you could talk to him but he couldn't talk back."

"Baby? What is Anya talking about?" Willow whispered in Tara's ear. She was still very confused.

"I'll fill you in on the way home," Tara said, moving to get up. Tara helped Willow up and then hugged her from behind. The blonde wasn't about to let Willow out of her arms, not even for a minute.

"Home?" Buffy asked the group, and they all nodded happily.

*********************

"Anya kissed you?" Willow asked, glaring at Anya from across the room.

They had arrived back at the Summer's house, ordered a pizza, and were now all sacked out in the living room. Tara had filled in Willow about what had happened at the Magic Box. The redhead didn't remember anything after Tara had sent the energy at The Guardian, for which she was thankful.

Tara had asked about what had happened when The Guardian changed the magic inside Willow, but Willow shook her head and asked if they could talk about it later. Tara agreed, but made Willow promise that she would tell the blonde everything. The redhead just didn't want to think about it yet, but she knew that she would tell Tara all of it in time. No secrets between us, Willow had thought.

Of course, the whole Anya-kissing-Tara thing had been something the blonde had hoped to leave out of the story, but Xander had inadvertently let it slip after they had filled Tara and Willow in on what had happened in the caves.

"Yes, honey, but she was trying to help you," Tara said as sweetly as possible, squeezing her girlfriend a little tighter from behind.

"By kissing you?" Willow asked again, jealousy burning in her eyes.

Tara had to giggle. Willow's jealousy over all things Tara was legendary, though Willow had gotten much better about it - until now.

"Wil, honey," Tara said as she leaned closer to Willow's ear, "She really was just trying to help. I think she couldn't think fast enough of how to explain, so she... showed me."

"I know, but... Anya-lips on Tara-lips?" Willow whined, her anger softening somewhat. Willow knew by now that without Anya's help, Tara might not have been able to bring her back. She would definitely thank Anya later, but right now all she could think about was Anya... kissing my girlfriend.

"You know the only lips I want on mine are yours," Tara cooed in Willow's ear, sending a little shiver down her body. Tara bit gently on Willow's earlobe and then sucked on it, smirking when she felt Willow's body respond. The only way to get past Willow-jealousy was with Tara-love.

Willow sighed happily and leaned back a little more into Tara's embrace. As far as Willow was concerned, she would be happy to just sit there with Tara in that chair for the rest of their lives. As long as she was in Tara's arms, she was happy.

"Giles, are you falling asleep?" Buffy asked, looking at her Watcher over on the couch.

"Huh? What?" Giles said, startling himself awake. "Oh, no, I'm awake."

Buffy giggled. They were all exhausted. It had been a very, very long day. She looked over at the clock. Nearly seven. When did that happen? she wondered. Dawn must be worried.

Buffy stood up and stretched.

"Going to get the Dawnster?" Xander asked.

"Yep. Who's up for a road trip?" she asked, looking around the room.

"We're in," Anya said, pulling Xander up with her as she stood.

Buffy was a little surprised. She had fully expected Anya to whisk Xander off for post-apocalyptic sex by now. Yet somehow Buffy understood - after what they had just been through, none of them were too eager to part just yet.

"Us too," Willow said, looking over her shoulder at Tara who nodded her agreement. They stood up practically as one. Buffy smiled. Tara had almost lost Willow, and she wasn't about to let Willow go now. God, Wil. We all almost lost you, Buffy thought. She didn't want to think about that, though.

"Fine, we'll all go," Giles said, slowly getting up off the couch. His legs felt like lead and his eyes were heavy, yet his heart was happy. They had defeated The Guardian, and they were all safe and sound.

Suddenly, Buffy tensed.

"Buffy?" Giles asked when he noticed the Slayer's posture, a little chill of fear running through his body. Now what?, he thought.

"I don't know... something-"

Buffy was cut off mid-sentence as the front door crashed open. About a dozen men in robes came rushing through the door. Buffy heard a similar crash come from the kitchen, so she wasn't surprised when another dozen men came into the living room from the kitchen.

Before Buffy could react, all of the Scoobies were being held by at least two men each, completely subdued.

Buffy punched one man as he closed in on her, but another man hit her from behind, knocking her to the ground. Quickly the man slapped manacles on her wrists, and two other men pulled Buffy up off the ground.

Groggily she looked around. Her mind was spinning, both from the bump on the head and from the fact that she hadn't seen this coming.

The Scoobies were dragged out into the front yard, where they were met by three more men. The men holding the Scoobies formed a semi-circle so that all were facing the three who had been waiting in the yard.

The man in the center stepped forward, smiling wickedly. He walked up to Buffy and slapped her. Buffy's head snapped back. She was surprised how strong the man was. She brought her head forward and glared at him.

"That was for killing my Master," the man said.

Then the man surprised Buffy again by grabbing her and kissing her. When he let go, Buffy glared even more fiercely at him.

"And that was also for killing my Master," the man said.

Buffy was working up a good rage when the man turned from her and walked over to Tara. He raised his hand to hit her, but she raised her chin and stared back at him defiantly. A cruel smile turned his lips, and he raised his hand higher. Tara mentally braced herself for the impact.

"Hey Mr. Ugly Guy!" Willow shouted, straining against her captors. The man turned slightly to look at the redhead. "That's right, I'm talking to you! What, you can only hit women when you've got your boys holding them down? How about your boys here let me loose and then you and me can have a go!" she shouted. Anything to get this man away form Tara.

The man laughed evilly, and then turned back to Tara. Panic filled Willow's heart as she took in Tara's expression. It was the same look Tara had had on her face when she stood up to Glory. No! Willow cried in her mind.

With a strength and fury she didn't know she possessed, Willow flailed her arms and kicked her legs. Somehow she managed to elbow on of the men holding her in the stomach, forcing him to let go. In the same motion she turned on the other man, scratching at his eyes in one clean stroke, and stomping on his foot. He howled in pain, but Willow barely noticed.

Willow jumped in between Tara and the man who threatened her, staring him down and shielding Tara with her body at the same time.

"Willow, no!" Tara pleaded, but Willow ignored her.

"You wanna hurt her? You gotta come through me!" Willow challenged.

The man laughed again, that cruel smile plastering itself to his face.

"All in good time, Willow," the man said, underlining Willow's name. "But first I've got plans for you." He turned and started to walk away, and shouted over his shoulder, "Bring them!"

"Who are you?" Willow asked, as the two hurt and now very angry guards grabbed her roughly by the arms.

The man stopped and turned back to face the group.

"My name," the man said, "is Dakin."

"And remember... if you hurt her I will beat you to death with a shovel. A vague disclaimer's nobody's friend. Have fun!"

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

***Jennpurr – No, you said in the story, so no going back on that now. I’m telling you, though, I had even bought a brand new red thong for your lap dance. Now what am I gonna do with that?

Hey, that's just mean, you know. So not fair, at all. Nope! Don't tease me about the red thong, if you're not gonna use it. ;)

Hee hee... ***Running off to read the update*** :grin

The love Willow and Tara share bested The Guardian, and brought Willow back. So I've every confidence that they'll beat Dakin and his Dorks . . . won't they?

Part 11

Postby blameburner » Mon May 27, 2002 8:32 pm

I don't know how, but I managed to complete this section by Monday night! Scary...

I was going to leave you with a mighty big cliffhanger, but due to many Kittens current state of mind (including mine), I opted to just finish the entire chapter. So no cliffhanger! Cliffhangers are officially over!

So after this, there will be a Part 12, where all the loose ends will be tied up (cuz I know a lot of people are going to be going "huh?" after reading this). And then... there will be Epilogue. Lots and lots of epilogue. I have promises to keep, after all.

So enjoy. Oh, and a word of warning... if there's anything in this update you just don't get (like you think I made a big error - you'll see when you read it), I didn't. I'll explain in Part 12. Just heading off the WTF comments some of you may feel like writing after reading this.

***Wolflord - Why thank you, thank you very much!

***Drakkenfyre - Glad you enjoyed my take on the Seven Dwarves. I just always thought there was something a bit fishy about seven men living with one woman! Although, I do have to say to Snow White, you go girl! And ooo, a roll of money! And here I thought I was going to have to pay you!

***The Rose24 - Um, big with the cliffhangers? Not so much... but sometimes they're just necessary. And, well... a little cliffhanger every once in a while is a good thing, right? Or not.

***Jenpurr - Mean? Moi? Nahhhh... I'm such a tease, I know. And oh looky what I just found! *Pulls out red bra to match thong, complete with tassles*

***mollyig - Dakin and his Dorks! LOL!!! I damn near used that in this update.

***Pixie Gishmock - Yeah, every now and then Anya just gets it, you know? Of course, I personally think she used it as an excuse to kiss Tara... subconsciously, of course! ;) *catches panties and puts them on her head*

***fidds - Yes, well, nails were the least I could do after leaving you with such a cliffhanger! *bows in response to fidds applause, but falls over as BB is just not coordinated*

***LeatherQueen - Willow's really got that large with the butch thing down, doesn't she? I love it when she gets like that...

***BoredNow99 - Evil and sadistic? Ouchie! No, see, evil and sadistic would have been the cliffhanger I was going to leave you with in Part 11. Hehe.

***Scout - It's all about kissing and protecting what's yours... err, mine... err, Willow's.

Title: The Guardian – Part 11

Part 11

Dakin and his minions dragged the Scoobies through Sunnydale High and back down into the cave where they had defeated The Guardian earlier that day.

"And once again, we're back at high school," Xander said nervously.

"Shut up," one of his guards said harshly, punching him in the stomach.

"Shutting up now," Xander said, cringing in pain.

Once again they were in a semi-circle facing Dakin.

"What do you want?" Willow said angrily, still straining against her captors.

In a flash Dakin was before her and his hand came down hard across her face, so hard that Willow was knocked down to the ground. Well that's gonna leave a mark, Willow thought as she shook her head, trying to clear it.

Tara pulled against her guards, trying to reach Willow. The redhead sensed her lover's concern and was afraid Tara would draw attention to herself. As Willow slowly stood up, she shot a reassuring look at Tara and grinned slightly, letting the blonde know she was all right. Tara relaxed visibly, and Willow turned back to face Dakin.

"Is that all you've got?" Willow asked defiantly. After Dakin had seemed so interested in Tara back in front of the Summer's house, Willow was afraid of what Dakin had in mind for her lover.

Willow figured if she could distract Dakin long enough and make him mad enough, Buffy would have a chance to get Tara and the others to safety. Even if it means I have to die, Willow thought.

Willow didn't want to die. But if it meant Tara would live... her mind went back to the conversation she and Tara had that morning in their room, about the selfishness of self-sacrifice. Wasn't Willow now doing what she had begged Tara not to? If she sacrificed herself, without telling anyone what she was planning or trying to find another way, wouldn't she be guilty of the same thing?

Willow closed her eyes tightly for a moment, trying to shut out the thoughts raging in her mind. No, this is different, she thought. I have to save Tara, no matter what.

Then something else flashed through Willow's mind. Had she just heard...

"Willow, stop it. Please baby, stop it!"

Willow heard Tara's voice, slightly distant but full of desperation.

"Tara?" Willow called out with her mind.

"Wil? Tara sent back, slightly shocked. "You can hear me?"

"Yeah, I guess I can," Willow responded. "I don't know how-"

Willow's thoughts were interrupted by another blow from Dakin, sending Willow to the ground.

"Ouch," Willow thought before she could stop herself.

"Baby you've got to stop this. Just stay down," Tara pleaded.

Willow shook her head and started to get up. "Tara, i have to protect you," she thought firmly, though her resolve was weakening at Tara's pleading.

"Willow, I need you. Alive. Don't you dare do this."

Willow was silent for a moment as she finished standing up. She looked into Dakin's cold eyes and he lifted an eyebrow, wordlessly challenging Willow to talk back to him again. Willow decided to back off - for now.

Without responding to Tara, Willow addressed Dakin.

"Just please don't hurt her," Willow begged.

"Oh I'm not going to hurt her," Dakin said, smiling. "Not right now, anyway. I'll make her scream soon enough."

Willow cringed at the words, fear for Tara gripping at her heart. No matter what, Willow realized, Dakin was going to kill them all.

"Besides," Dakin said, "this really isn't about her. It's about you."

Willow was genuinely surprised, and waited for Dakin to continue.

"You see, when you had your little run-in with Thomas a few weeks ago, I realized just how powerful you were. I figured that was my best shot at getting what I wanted," Dakin said evilly. "So I let you do the work for me."

Willow was trying to put the pieces together. She figured Thomas must be the follower that got away the night Spike fought the Tremorg Demon. But what exactly did Dakin want? The Guardian dead? But why?

Dakin turned to Giles. "Of course, when your little binding spell failed, I had to step in. Quite inconvenient, actually. Put me at risk. But I had been prepared for any possibility," Dakin said, obviously pleased with himself. "So I cast a spell that momentarily drained The Guardian of his power."

Now Giles finally understood how Buffy had been able to kill him.

"But why wait? If you could drain The Guardian, why not just kill him earlier?" Giles asked.

Dakin smiled. "I couldn't kill him. I needed him to draw in the power from the Convergence, concentrate it. Then when you killed him, the power was released."

"Well that was dumb," Anya said. Xander shot Anya a look that told her to shut up, but she ignored him. "The energy won't do you any good now that it's been released. The balance between good and evil has been restored."

Dakin eyed Anya in amusement. They still didn't get it. That made him laugh.

"Yes, the darkness was released, but the balance is not yet fully restored. It won't be restored until the evil stops pouring in from the convergence," he said happily. "The evil is still here, still largely concentrated in these caves. And now I will use Willow to take that energy into myself."

Willow stared at Dakin blankly. It wasn't possible, was it?

"But that still won't do you any good," Giles said in confusion. "You don't have the power to tear down the dimensional walls."

Dakin laughed again. "I don't want to tear them down! I don't even want to open a hole in them! No, you see, once I take in all the evil, I will be the most powerful being in this dimension. I'll rule the world."

Willow thought for a moment that Dakin was really starting to sound like a bad version of Pinky and The Brain.

"But you can't take it all into yourself," Willow said. "You wouldn't survive it. No human body could withstand it." Willow paused for a moment, and then added, "Oh, well then, by all means, go ahead, knock yourself out!"

"I can handle it," Dakin said viciously, "because I'm not human anymore."

Dakin's face morphed to reveal his vampire self, and everyone stared at him in shock.

"That's not possible," Giles said. "If you'd been a demon before, you would have died when all the demon's heads exploded."

"And you'd be insane," Xander added. "Oh wait, you are insane. Scratch that theory."

Dakin nodded towards one of the guards and the guard punched Xander in the face.

"I was human when you killed The Guardian," Dakin said. "But you see, I've been holding a vampire captive outside of town. He turned me."

A severe sense of dread swept through the Scoobies, which was confirmed when Dakin's men dragged a bloodied and severely tortured Spike into the cave.

*************************

"No!" Buffy screamed, staring at Spike with tears in her eyes. If Spike was here, then where was...

Spike raised his head slightly, just enough to look at Buffy with the eye that wasn't swollen shut. "Sorry," was all Spike could manage.

Buffy hadn't wanted to mention Dawn, just in case Spike had managed to hide her in time. For a moment after Spike spoke Buffy thought her sister had been killed, and she felt as though she had just been staked through the heart.

Relief washed over Buffy when she heard her sister shriek "Let me go!" from just outside the cave, which was followed by an unhurt but very pissed off Dawn being dragged into the cave. A tear trickled down Buffy's cheek as she took in the sight of her unharmed sister. But relief quickly turned to rage directed at Spike as she realized Spike had been the one to turn Dakin.

"Why?" she screamed at Spike. "Why did you do it!"

Spike couldn't answer, whether it was because of his injuries or because of the pain he felt at seeing the look on the Slayer's face, he couldn't be sure. So he simply hung his head back down.

"Actually, you really shouldn't be too hard on old Spike here," Dakin said, moving over to pat Spike roughly on the head. Then Dakin grabbed Spike by his short, blond hair and yanked the vampire's head up roughly.

"Spike here has a very high tolerance for torture," Dakin laughed. "Crosses, holy water, breaking each one of his fingers, beatings, fire... Old Spikey just let us have our way with him."

Dakin dropped Spike's head and walked over to Dawn. He ran a finger down Dawn's cheek, and Dawn winced.

"Through it all, Spike refused to turn me. That really pissed me off," Dakin said, turning towards Buffy. "I mean, here I'd gone through all the trouble of selecting Spike specifically for this purpose, and he refused! Can you believe it?"

Buffy's mind was spinning. She didn't understand how Spike had even been able to turn Dakin with the chip in his head, let alone why it had to be Spike that Dakin had chosen. Dakin read the confusion on Buffy's face, and was happy to explain his brilliance to her.

"You see, I learned about Spike when we first arrived in Sunnydale," Dakin explained. "I figured because of the chip in his head, Spike would be easy to capture. I had planned to kidnap him and take him outside of town until the right moment. But after I found out Spike was working with you humans, I was intrigued."

Dakin paced the room for a moment, smiling broadly. He really did have an excellent mind, he decided.

"I decided to investigate, so I had Spike followed," Dakin continued. "When Spike and the witches discovered Thomas and Michael, and Thomas told me about how Willow had faced off against Glorificus, I realized just how powerful your little group was."

Dakin walked over to Dawn again. "I also realized that Spike really was working with you because he wanted to, not because he simply couldn't hurt you. I had thought Spike would turn me willingly, but after the way he protected the witches, I decided that might not be the case. That would have disappointed me, but then I discovered I had an ace in the hole. Her." he said, indicating Dawn.

"It was clear just how protective Spike was of her," Dakin said, "and I knew I could use that if necessary." Dakin walked back over the Slayer. "So I had your house and that magic store bugged, which is when I found out about your plan to defeat The Guardian, and that Spike would be taking Dawn here out of town. It was perfect."

Dakin smiled again. "Thought I must admit, I really didn't think using her would be necessary. I thought with a little torture, Spike would give it up." Dakin turned to look at the vampire. "I was wrong, though. So I used Dawn as leverage. Far more effective."

Buffy had been silent, just listening and trying to put it all together.

"How?" she asked.

"Simple. I told Spike that I wouldn't hurt Dawn if he vamped me," Dakin said.

Buffy turned to Spike. "And you believed that?" she said incredulously.

Spike raised his head to look at her. "I hoped I could keep her alive... long enough... to gain some kind of advantage... help her escape," Spike said raggedly, each word agonizing. "I didn't know... what turning him... would mean."

Buffy's eyes softened slightly towards the blond vampire. It was obvious he had tried to protect Dawn.

Dakin turned to look curiously at Spike. "I'm curious, though, why a vampire would even care? Why not just turn me when I tortured you? Why protect the girl?"

Spike didn't look at Dakin, but instead kept his gaze locked with Buffy's. "I made a promise," was all Spike said.

Buffy's heart nearly broke. In that moment, she discovered that she had never fully understood the depths of Spike's feelings for her, for Dawn, for all of them. She had never let herself understand, or appreciate Spike. If we get out of this, Spike and I are going to have a long talk, Buffy thought.

"But how did Spike turn you?" Giles asked. "The chip..."

"Oh, that wasn't so hard. I cast a spell that temporarily blocked the effects of the chip," Dakin said.

"Fine, so you're a vampire and can take in all the evil mojo," Willow said angrily. She had stayed silent, her mind processing all Dakin had said while still trying to work out a way for all of them to escape. "But see, you messed up because I can't help you with your little evil scheme."

Dakin took a step towards Willow, but she didn't back down. "I don't do dark magic anymore," she continued, "and besides that, I'm just a teensy but drained of magical energy right now. Tell you what, you let us go home and get some rest, and I'll come back tomorrow and we'll have a little dark magic party, okay?" Willow would promise anything if it meant they could all get out of there.

Before any of them knew what was happening, Dakin uttered a quick incantation and pressed his hand to the center of Willow's chest. Willow was lifted off the ground and the air glowed red around her.

"No!" Tara screamed, but to no avail.

Willow's head was flung back and her arms hung loosely at her sides as she levitated nearly two feet off the ground, her body filling with dark magic. Finally Dakin dropped his hand and Willow floated back to the ground. Dakin smiled once again.

Willow looked up and Tara gasped. Willow's eyes were completely black, and the air around Willow surged with power.

The redhead was slightly dazed, but she could feel the power flowing through her. She raised her hands in front of her face, and angry red sparks danced off her fingertips. Willow smiled slightly as she watched the energy crackle around her.

Tara was crying now, afraid not only of what such a surge of power would do to Willow's still weakened body, and distraught that Willow had fought off the dark magic of The Guardian only to lose to Dakin. Willow had been through too much. Tara was also afraid of what Willow might do with the dark magic now coursing through her veins in their current situation.

"Willow," Tara said softly. Willow looked up slowly at her lover, and once again the absence of green in Willow's eyes made Tara gasp. But Tara knew she had to be strong if she was going to reach Willow, so she pushed down her pain and fear and focused on her love.

"Willow, I love you," Tara said gently but urgently. "Come back to me. Please."

Willow blinked once, then again, and then shut her eyes tightly and balled her fists. After a moment that seemed to last an eternity, Willow slowly opened her eyes and looked up at Tara. They were green. Tara smiled.

Willow smiled back, and then turned to Dakin. "You're going to have to do better than that," Willow said simply.

Dakin looked at her angrily. "Fine, have it your way," he said, his voice full of rage.

He snapped his fingers and Willow heard a sickening crack and then Giles screaming in agony. One of the guards had broken Giles' arm. Before Willow could say anything, another of the guards punched Anya in the face. Another took out a knife and slashed Xander across the abdomen.

Then one of the guards holding Tara raised a knife to her throat. Buffy was struggling to get free of the three goons holding her, but she froze at the sight of the knife pressed against Tara's throat.

"No!" Willow screamed, her eyes fixed on the knife which was a hair's breadth from splitting Tara's skin. She turned back to Dakin, her eyes filled with tears. "Please stop it, I'm begging you."

"You want it to stop," Dakin said happily, knowing he had her. "The only way to save your friends is to do the spell."

Willow didn't even hesitate.

"Done," she said.

******************

"What do I have to do?" Willow asked.

"Willow no," Tara said, unable to scream as the knife was still pressed to her throat.

"Willow you can't," Giles shouted, earning a punch to the face for his trouble.

"Please, Willow, don't do it," Buffy pleaded with her best friend. "You can't-"

"Buffy," Willow interrupted, looking at Buffy. "I have to do what I have to do."

"No Willow!" Buffy said, straining against her captors once again. Dakin snapped his fingers and one of the guards raised a large knife up behind Buffy.

"Wait!" Willow said urgently, and Dakin raised his hand to halt the guard with the knife. "I can calm her down," Willow said, pleading with Dakin not to kill her friend. "Please, let me talk to her?"

Dakin studied Willow for a moment, and then nodded. It just wouldn't do to have Willow distraught over the Slayer's death. There'd be plenty of time to kill the Slayer later, once he had gotten what he wanted. Dakin was nothing if not patient.

Willow walked over to stand almost nose to nose with Buffy. The guards tightened their grip, but Buffy didn't make a move to fight them. She just stared into Willow's eyes, silently willing the redhead to change her mind.

"You've been where I am," Willow said quietly, almost in a whisper. "You know. It's like when Angel lost his soul after sleeping with Faith. Sometimes you just have to go along to get what you want."

Buffy looked deeply into Willow's eyes and nodded, then dropped her head in resignation.

Willow turned and walked back to Dakin. She listened intently as Dakin explained the spell that was required. Willow would gather the evil and funnel it into Dakin, acting as a conduit.

"Willow, you can't do this," Tara begged Willow in her mind. "What did you tell me this morning? About self-sacrifice? I'd rather die than lose you this way."

It broke Willow's heart but she ignored Tara, tuning her out as Dakin finished explaining the gathering spell.

"Of course, you'll probably die," Dakin said to Willow. "That's a lot of energy to have pass through your body. Or it will fry your brain. Even if you do survive intact, you will be completely addicted to the darkness. You will be mine to control."

"Why are you telling me this?" Willow asked.

"Because I know you're smart. You would have figured out the consequences eventually, and I don't want you suddenly distracted by fear in the middle of the spell," Dakin said. "You'd break your concentration."

Willow nodded in acknowledgment. The truth was her mind had already processed all the potential outcomes, and none of them were good for her. Still, she would do what she had to do.

Tara sobbed as she listened to Dakin, and she practically fell to her knees in grief. She was going to lose Willow.

Willow heard her lover sobbing and asked Dakin, "Can I have a minute alone with Tara before we start?"

"No," Dakin said. "Whatever you have to say to her you'll have to say right here."

Dakin looked over Willow's shoulder to Tara, who was glaring back at him. "You better say goodbye to your girlfriend now," Dakin taunted. "You won't get another chance."

Dakin nodded to the guard holding the knife on Tara, and the guard let her go, stepping back only slightly.

Willow turned, noticing the fear and sadness in all of her friend's eyes. She knew they were disappointed in her, but she couldn't help that. She knew what she was doing.

"Willow don't," Giles said, "You can't do this. You're being selfish! You're acting like a child!" Giles was trying anything he could to get through to Willow.

Willow heard Giles' words and they nearly tore her apart, but she ignored him and walked over to Tara.

Tara was still sobbing, shaking her head and begging Willow not to do it. Willow stepped up in front of the blonde and reached out her hand to Tara's face.

Tara yanked her head back, away from Willow's touch. It nearly killed her to do it, but she would try anything to reach Willow, even making Willow feel guilty.

"If you do this, Willow Rosenberg, I will never forgive you," Tara said coldly.

Willow's eyes filled with tears, and all Tara wanted to do was take the words back and tell Willow she loved her. But Tara pressed on.

"If you're going to do this, then don't touch me. Don't you dare think you have any right," Tara said. She could see that her words cut Willow deeply, but Tara maintained her resolve face.

"Well, well. Looks like you're not going to get your goodbye kiss after all, Willow," Dakin said snidely.

Hearing Dakin's words, Willow's expression hardened. Tara wasn't sure what was going through Willow's mind, but she didn't have time to think about it as Willow reached out and grabbed Tara's face, pulling her into a deep, demanding kiss.

Tara started to resist, to pull away, but with the first press of Willow's lips against hers, she was lost. She clutched Willow's waist like her life depended on it, pulling the redhead tighter against her as Willow poured her heart and soul into the kiss.

Willow ran her hands into Tara's hair and pressed her tongue deeper into Tara's mouth. The blonde took it in willingly, opening her mouth and breathing Willow in.

Tara ran her hands around Willow's back and dug her fingers into her lover's back, not wanting to let go. Never wanting to let go.

After a long moment, Willow pulled back and broke the kiss. Still holding Tara's head she looked deeply into Tara's eyes.

"I'm sorry, baby," she said, her voice thick with emotion. Then she turned her back and walked away, following Dakin into the next room, Tara's sobs echoing throughout the cavern.

******************

Willow and Dakin had been gone for what seemed like forever, but in reality had only been a few minutes.

At one point Xander had tried to say something to Buffy, but the guards quickly shut him up.

Giles was cradling his broken arm, thankful to see Anya had finally come to after being punched by the guard. Anya's eye was swollen, but otherwise she seemed okay.

Giles looked at Xander, who was wincing, but the blood seemed to have stopped flowing from the cut to his stomach.

Giles was more concerned about Buffy. She was still standing there staring straight ahead. She looked completely defeated, and Giles knew that if they had any hope of getting out of there alive, they would need Buffy.

The Watcher glanced over at Dawn, who was looking at Spike. The guards had finally dropped the vampire to the ground, where he appeared to have passed out. Giles wanted to be angry with Spike, to blame him for what was happening right now to all of them, but he couldn't. Spike had done what he had in order to protect Dawn, and Giles knew it. Giles admitted to himself that he might just have been wrong about Spike.

The Watcher's train of thought was broken by a thud, and he looked over to see Tara had collapsed. He strained in his captors arms to go over to Tara, but the guards tightened their grip.

One of Tara's guards leaned down to feel for a pulse, which he apparently found because he visibly breathed a sigh of relief. The guard stood up again, just leaving Tara lying on the ground.

******************

Willow began the spell. She could feel the darkness surging through her as she fed it into Dakin.

For his part, Dakin stood about three feet from Willow, his head thrown back in rapture.

Willow was sweating with exertion as she focused on gathering the evil and funneling it through herself and into Dakin. The power of it was overwhelming.

"That's it," Dakin said, his mouth hanging open in ecstasy. "It's incredible. The power."

Willow ignored him, concentrating on doing what she had to do. After a few minutes, Dakin frowned.

"It's not enough. This isn't all of it," he said. He turned an angry glare to Willow. "You're holding back!"

"I just didn't want to overwhelm you," Willow said apologetically.

Dakin scowled. "I can handle it. Now give it to me!"

"Are you sure?" Willow asked.

Dakin would have killed her where she stood if he didn't need her to complete the spell.

"Give it to me!" he shouted furiously.

Willow smiled. "As you wish."

********************

A loud scream pierced the cave where the Scoobies were being held. It was full of rage, and it was clearly male.

It was quickly followed by another scream, but this one filled the Scoobies with fear. It was Willow's scream, and it was filled with pain.

The guards all started snickering, knowing that that kind of scream could only mean one thing. The Scoobies knew it too. Willow was either dead, or she had gone insane.

Giles hung his head and felt tears stinging his eyes. He was just glad Tara had passed out and hadn't heard the scream.

Xander just stared at the short tunnel leading into the room where Willow was. Anya wept silently. Dawn was also crying, and Buffy looked as though she was catatonic.

The guards looked expectantly towards the tunnel, waiting for Dakin to appear. Instead, Willow stumbled into the room, her eyes black. She was giggling as though she were high, and even though Giles was relieved to see Willow alive, he almost wished she were dead. She now belonged to Dakin.

Willow's entrance seemed to snap Buffy out of her catatonia, and she looked at Willow.

"Wil? Are you okay?" Buffy asked.

"Sure, fine. Never been better," Willow said, grinning wildly. "I've finally seen the light."

As soon as the words left Willow's mouth, a bright flash filled the room, blinding everyone. Everyone, that is, except Willow, Buffy, and Tara - who was now on her feet.

The guards were all screaming and clutching at their eyes. Buffy felt the guards who had been holding her let go, and she jerked her arms apart, breaking the chain holding her manacled wrists together. With her arms free, she turned on her guards, taking them out swiftly.

Willow ran to Tara's side, and together they took down the closest guards.

By now everyone was recovering, and the guards started to move in on Tara and Willow. Just as one of the guards reached Willow, Xander knocked him to the ground with a flying tackle.

Giles clutched his broken arm to his stomach and punched anything in sight with his good arm. Anya was helping Giles, and Buffy grabbed a sword and ran into the next room.

Dawn had managed to recover from her shock, and from the blinding light flash, and started to run over to see if she could help Willow and Tara. Suddenly she was grabbed from behind by one of the guards.

"You're dead!" he shouted at her, reaching to his belt to pull out a knife.

"Not bloody likely," said Spike, turning the man away from Dawn and punching him, knocking him to the ground.

"Spike!" Dawn said, rushing to hug the vampire.

"S'okay, niblet, I've got you," he said, hugging Dawn back and the pushing her behind him. "Just stay behind me," he said before making his way towards Giles and Anya.

"But how did you...?" Dawn asked even as she did as Spike said.

"Guess that spell they did on me hasn't worn off yet," Spike said, punching out another guard.

There were only about nine guards left now, as the Scoobies had taken out about a dozen. Somehow they had managed to group together, and they were facing down the remaining guards, who were advancing slowly.

"Ahem," Buffy cleared her throat to get everyone's attention. She was leaning against the wall near the tunnel, her sword resting on her shoulder.

The remaining guards took one look at the Slayer and took off running out the other tunnel, leaving the battered but not broken Scoobies the only ones standing.

"Oh good, I thought we'wre gonna hafta fight s'more," Willow mumbled cheerfully before passing out.

"Wil!" Tara shouted, dropping down beside her girlfriend.

Buffy dropped the sword and walked up to Willow, bending down to lift her best friend in her arms. "I got her, Tare," Buffy said. "How about we take her home?"

Tara nodded, and Buffy walked out of the cave with the Scoobies close behind.

"And remember... if you hurt her I will beat you to death with a shovel. A vague disclaimer's nobody's friend. Have fun!"

Willow thought for a moment that Dakin was really starting to sound like a bad version of Pinky and The Brain. Its a testament to Willow's wacky brain that she'd think of something like this while in danger. You just gotta love her!

And you just gotta love this story!

WOW.... dude, this chapter was awesome. Poor Tara. I think I know what you did with Willow, but I'm not sure. I guess we'll have to wait till next chapter. Soon, please? I loved how you had W/T connect in their minds. Very cool. :grin

I'm noticing that WOW seems to be the most used word in this thread...and for good reason. that, that being all of it-the whole thing I just read, was amazing. I used up all of my intelligent words about 6 hours ago. I can hardly wait for the next update...

Just to prove Laurel's point I'm gonna have to say...WOW!

Loved this part, can't wait for the next.

Which I'm sure I'll love in equal measure.

Cos, y'know, favouritism's bad.

My most humble apologies. No update yet, and frankly I'm not sure when. Soon though.

Thanks so very much for all your kind words. I'll post individual replies when I update - soon. Did I mention soon?

Unfortunately, what I was afraid would happen has happened. My new job is kicking my ass, and by the time I get home after 13 hours at work, my brain's been a bit too fried to write. The good news is my firm has given me a dictaphone which if worse comes to worse I'll start using to dictate the rest of this story as I drive to and from work (seeing as how I don't know the correct way to dictate legal documents for the secretaries, I certainly can't use the dictaphone for work!)

The only bright spot of my day - besides reading all your wow-ing, that is? There's this really cute support staffer at the office... hmm...

Well BB, I am not going to say this update was WOW. Nope not me. I am going to say it was awesome, wonderful, great, exciting, intriguing, and not to mention good. :grin But I refuse to say WOW. :grin I think I know how Willow pulled it off and like most I don't think I will post my guess and ruin it for others. But If I am right, I loved your little clue you gave about it. Now to other matters, sorry you are having to work so much, I know the feeling 12-15 hour days suck. So I will excuse the lateness of any update you give. HOWEVER, you owe me a smut scene that involves a strip tease between Willow and Tara....as you promised earlier on. And just so you remember, I have taken you muse hostage and tied her and I am currently pouring honey on her...........well gotta go have a sweet little snack something with honey on it. :bounce :bounce

Great Update! I can't wait to see the next part! I like the way you show how the trust has been rebuilt between Willow and Tara.
