Sammi, Tempest-- Thank you both. I'm glad you liked it. And this should make you both (and anyone else who is interested for that matter) happy...it's not over yet.

NMR might have been the culmination of the romantic rise of Willow and Tara, but it's not the end of the story. There is a little more to tell, since season 4 isn't over yet.

Read on. :banana

As much as they both admitted they wanted to, they didn't try to do anything more than kiss that night. They just lay in bed holding one another until they fell asleep.

When Tara woke the next morning she was still in Willow's arms and she smiled. "Goddess." It was still hard to believe. She and Oz had been in a sort competition for Willow's affection. Somehow, through some twist of fate,

she had won. They were together. Willow was her...girlfriend. The realization brought both a smile and a blush to her face. Girlfriend. She had a girlfriend. Willow. "I love you."

Beside her, the redhead yawned and mumbled, not quite awake yet. "Mm...love you too."

"Hey you." Tara leaned in to kiss Willow. First on her forehead and cheek then finally on the lips as the redhead opened her eyes. "Good morning. Sleep well?"

Willow sat up and stretched. "Perfectly." She stole a kiss from the blonde. "What time is it?"

"Umm..." Tara glanced at her watch. "...about nine-fifteen."

The redhead slid off the bed. "Oh man, I gotta go. I've got class in like fifteen minutes."

"Are you sure?"

"I don't want to...Goddess I so do not want to. But I have to. We have a test, and it's going to be like one third of our grade for the semester." She crawled back on the bed and kissed Tara, then kissed her again, and continued to do so until Tara finally pushed her away. "Hey!"

"Go to class," said the blonde. "I'll meet you for lunch in the cafeteria, okay?"

"Okay. But I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you too. Now go on. You don't wanna be late."

Willow blew her a kiss and then headed for the door.

Tara lay back on the bed and sighed, a huge grin on her face. "I love you."

As they were sitting down to lunch Amanda showed up. They talked for a few minutes, then Amanda's father got there to pick her up. She introduced them, hugged Tara and told Willow good-bye, then left. The witches finished eating and went back to the blonde's room to look through course catalogues. Willow actually spent most of that time playing with the little black and white kitten they had rescued from the pound.

"I keep thinking, okay, that's the cutest thing ever, and then she does something cuter and completely resets the whole scale."

Tara knew exactly how she felt. "Did you see her yawn earlier?"

"Yes! I thought I was going to die." Willow held the kitten up. "I love you, Miss Kitty Fantastico."

Willow had been calling her that since that got her. "We've got to get her a real name."

"It's so cool she's all ours--yours. That she's yours is cool.

Tara smiled. "She can be ours if you want." That was a little bolder statement than she was used to making, so to fend off the uncomfortable fluttering in her stomach she turned back to the course catalog. Her eyes scanned the page. "You still need an elective. How about...sophomore level psychology?" She was shaken by the huskiness of her own voice as she said the last three words.

"Oh. Kind of psyched-out after Professor Walsh. Maybe something fun, like drama. I could be dramatic." Again she held Miss Kitty Fantastico up. "You cannot have more catnip! You have a catnip problem."

Tara beamed. Willow was just so incredibly cute. "Definitely drama."

"I haven't even dealt with the housing forms yet," Willow said with a tired sigh. "Have you done anything? I hear there's some off-campus places that are way cool for, you know, a group to go in on."

Something in Willow's voice suprised Tara. It almost sounded like the redhead was fishing; checking around to see if she wanted them to move in together. Of course it was way too soon for that though, so she just chalked it up to wishful thinking on her part. "Oh. I figured you'd be dorming it up with Buffy again."

"We haven't really talked about it. I used to just assume we'd be roomies through grad school and into little old ladyhood. You know, cheating at Bingo together and forgetting to take our pills."

Tara nodded. "But...?"

Willow shrugged. "But, I don't know. It hardly feels like we're roommates now. She's all busy with Riley, and I'm gone a lot too." This time there was definitely something in her voice. Tara stared at her. "I guess I should ask her." She absently petted Miss Kitty Fantastico, who mewled.

Tara decided to do something to take the redhead's mind off whatever she was feeling. "Hey, I know. Why don't we forget about next semester for a while?"

"Okay. What'd you have in mind?"

"Well..." Tara slid the books aside and crawled onto the bed. "...there is the little matter of what we talked about the other night. You know, us?"

Willow smiled as Tara stopped with her lips just inches away from her own. "Oh yeah. Now that's a subject I am really interesting in studying. Do you, umm, think there's still room in the class?"

"Well, I happen to be really close with the instructor. I think I can, um, make room for you."

"Is that right?" Willow put Miss Kitty gently on the floor. "Go take a nap, sweety. Your...mommies, need a little alone time." She smiled at Tara's blush. The kitten mewled and went under the bed while the redhead put her arms around Tara's neck. "Now then, where we we?"

Tara pressed her lips against Willow's, and the two of them fell back on the bed.

**

Their first attempt devolved into a fit of tickling and laughter.

Their second ended with throaty moans and the two of them gasping for air.

But as it turned out, the third time really was the charm. The people in the rooms on either side of Tara's ended up pounding on the walls, demanding they keep the noise down.

Basking in the afterglow, their arms and legs entertwined, Tara lay her head on Willow's chest and sighed. "That was...was...Goddess."

"What?"

"I don't know. I'm not sure I have the words to describe it."

"Let me. Glorious? Spectacular? Splendiferous? Wonderful?"

Tara nodded. "All of the above. Except, maybe, splendiferous? Is that really a word?"

"Just call me Mrs. Thesaurus."

"There are a lot of things I could call you," said Tara. "But I'm not sure that one would be on the list." She leaned in to kiss the redhead. "I'm just glad my first time was with someone so generous."

Willow shrugged her shoulders. "I like to think I'm a quick study."

"Did you, um, want to..." Tara turned her head as the phone rang. "Oh no." She slid out of bed and answered it. "Is it important? O-Okay, just a second." She put a hand over the receiver. "It's Mr. Giles. He says he's in urgent need of your computer expertise, and he wants you to come over as soon as possible."

The redhead sat up. "Computer and Giles? Those are two words you don't usually...okay ever, hear together. Let him know I'll be there as soon as I can."

Tara nodded. "Okay." She moved her hand. "She'll be...what? All right. Yes. Good-bye." She hung up. "He says to make sure you bring your laptop with you."

"Okay. I'm officially freaking out now." Willow looked around. "Hey. Where is my underwear?"

Tara went along with her. It turned out Giles needed Willow to decipher some disks that Spike was supposed to be bringing back from the Initiative, though the Watcher had his doubts.

While they were waiting Willow told her about Spike. She had mentioned him before, but not in any detail. His presence in their lives seemed to be something the redhead wasn't entirely happy about either. It was a strange to think about--a vampire who helped the Scoobies because of a chip in his head. She was also shocked to learn of a secret government lab underneath Lowell House.

When Spike arrived, Tara realized she had seen him before. He was the mysterious Englishman who'd saved her from a vampire some time ago. She'd never learned his name, and at the time had no idea he was a vampire. It was also obvious he didn't recognize her, so she put it aside and watched Willow work. The redhead sat at Giles' desk, her fingers flying across the keyboard of her laptop. Tara had no idea what she was doing, or what anything on the screen meant, but she loved watching Willow work, and absently stroked the redhead's hair. She got a feeling she was being watched, and glanced up to see Spike staring at her. No, she realized, them. Tara turned away, disturbed by the intensity of his gaze, while he went to talk to Giles.

"I coulda gone straight to the Slayer, you know. I cut you in. Let you pretend you're actually in charge. Now you gotta wait for Red's permission to finish the deal?"

"As soon as we see what's on the discs," Giles replied icily.

Tara heard all this but didn't say anything. It wasn't any of her business, after all Then her attention was drawn to the laptop. The seemingly random symbols confused her. "It looks like gibberish."

Spike came up to the desk. "Gibberish?"

"They're encrypted," said Willow.

Giles turned and walked down the hall. "Wonderful."

"Well, why did·can you fix them?" Spike asked.

"Crack a government encryption code on my laptop? Easy as...really difficult pie."

Tara smiled. She loved the way Willow's mind worked.

"You're not exactly the whiz these days either. God, I'm never getting paid."

Willow seemed hurt by this. "I am a whiz!"

Tara stood up for her girlfriend. "She is a whiz." In a lot of ways, none of which she was going to tell him about, but that wasn't the point.

"If ever a whiz there was," Willow grumbled. "I just need some time."

"No, I just heard you weren't..." Spike sighed. Tara found this curious, because she knew vampires didn't need to breath. "Your mates said you weren't playing with computers so much. Into the new thing."

Tara blinked. 'Uh oh.' Something was going on with the vampire, she just couldn't put her finger on it.

"What new thing?" Willow asked.

"You know--you two," Spike continued. "The whole...Wicca thing."

Willow and Tara were both stunned, for different reasons.

"They were talking about that?" Willow asked.

Spike had no aura Tara could detect, but she still got the feeling Spike was lying. She just wasn't sure if she was really sensing something from him or whether it was just a vampire thing.

"Can we get back to business here? I got a deal at stake."

"What'd they say?" Willow asked.

Spike grunted, as if he was feeling frustrated. "Talking about, you know, it's a phase, you'll get over it."

"What? Who said that? Was it Buffy?" Willow sounded almost frantic as she turned to Tara. "'Cause you know what she means by that."

The vampire shook his head. "She was defending you. 'Cause Xander said you were just being trendy."

"Trendy?"

"I didn't see why they were going on. Person wants to be a witch, that's their business."

Willow was trembling. "I knew Buffy was freaked."

Tara could feel her lover's pain. "You should talk to her, 'cause I'm sure..."

Spike interrupted her, and Tara frowned. "Pressing business, ladies." He gestured at the the computer. "Let's not get sidetracked. Still got your monsters to fight."

"Willow." Tara put her hand on the redhead's. "Your aura is flaring. You have to calm down."

"I need to go for a walk." Willow got up. "Giles, I'll be back in about an hour."

The Watcher looked up from the bottle whose contents he was pouring into a glass. "Very well."

"Come on." Willow grabbed Tara's arm and dragged her out of the apartment. "Goddes. That...guy, frustrates me so much sometimes."

"Who, Giles?"

"No. Spike. He thinks just cause he's like two hundred years old, he can talk to me like a child."

"Willow, I-I don't think..."

"Though now that you mention it, Giles wasn't being much help either."

"Willow..."

"Let's just forget it." Willow stroked Tara's cheek. "Can we go back to your place?"

"Of course, but..." The blonde saw a familiar surging in the redhead's aura, and smiled. "Oh."

Life is much too serious to be taken seriously.

Willow is a tree that weeps, but Tara is firmer and will hold.

Oh Kirk, this is really awesome writing dude! Can't believe I missed this fic! Bad me!:mad

My favorite kind of fic too! Explaining their relationship from the beginning--so cool!:wink You also fill so many holes in the relationship that we missed on the show that made beautiful perfect sense! :bow

I like your writing style. You don't ramble with unimportant detail but rather emphasize the general feelings and storyline--especially from Tara's point of view. I like your rendition that Tara and Willow didn't sleep together until after New Moon Rising. I believe that too. Otherwise why would Willow feel like she had to choose between Tara and Oz--am I right??!!! I mean if they had slept together/were intimate with each other--there would have been no question when Oz re-arrived what Willow would do.

Also, thanks for the regular updates I noticed--that's very generous of you Captain Kirk!!

You made a fan out of me! You seem like a cool dude too! It was great chatting and laughing with you on the chatroom the other night. That was a hoot!!

Hope to see more of you on the board, until then, rock on--and keep taking those incriminating photos, PLEASE?!!:lol

Wow. People are really reading this thing. :)

Draco119-- I'm glad you liked it. And if you enjoyed Alternate Alternatives you should read the others in the series. Vamp Willow and her Tara get into even more trouble.

Sammi-- You're becoming quite a regular poster on here, and I appreciate it.

Screeminguitar-- I'm glad I could introduce you to the weird and wondeful world of fan fiction, Kirk-style. And I plan on being in the chat room again some time soon, so you never know where my camera will show up. :)

Allykat-- Thank you. I hope you like what's coming up. I am going to be delving into really unknown territory with Primevil, and wait until you see Restless.

Tempestduer-- I wasn't sure about the third times the charm part, I thought maybe that was a bit cliche, but the pounding on the walls by the neighbors...I just knew that had to be in there.

To everyone who's taken the time to write me, I thank you, and I will always do my best to respond personally to every one of you.

Now then, for what you really came here to see... :banana

They made love, not once but several times, after which it took all of Tara's self-control to get them out of bed so they could get dressed and head back over to Giles'. Xander and Anya were there and Buffy arrived some time later. The Slayer told them about her encounter with Adam.

Willow got to work on the disks again. Unfortunately, she wasn't having any more luck than last time. After her fourth attempt at decrypting the data ended in failure, the redhead swore at the computer and seemed to be on the verge of magicking it out the window. Tara calmed her with a neck rub.

But Buffy was obviously becoming frustrated. "So how long before you...uncrypt it?"

"Hours. Days, maybe," Willow replied. "Anyone suggesting months would not be accused of crazy talk."

Clutching another scotch in his hand, Giles spoke up. "Whatever happened to Latin? At least when that made no sense, the church approved."

The Watcher was drunk. Tara knew drunk when she heard it. She had seen both her father and her brother in that state more than once. From someone like Giles though, it seemed worse somehow.

Buffy ignored him. "I can't just wait around, Will. That disk is no good to me unless you crack it soon."

Tara could feel Willow's anger rising. Before the redhead could respond though, Anya interrupted.

"Hey! We worked hard getting that! Xander delivered clothing."

"The church approved." Giles chuckles to himself. He was still enjoying his own joke.

Buffy frowned. She started pacing. "Sorry everyone but we're on a clock here. Adam was at that cave. Maybe he was there for a reason. I can go back, scope it out, track him if I have to."

Willow couldn't stay silent any longer. "Right! And maybe you'll get lucky and he'll still be there and he can rip your arms off for you! Buffy, you can't go back alone."

Giles had a goofy smile on his face. "You never train with me anymore. He's gonna kick your ass."

The Slayer was shocked. "Giles?!"

"Sorry!" The Watcher clearly wasn't apologetic. "Didn't mean to be so honest. Terribly sorry."

Xander shook his head. "So she doesn't go alone. Giles, weapons all around--"

"You're not coming, Xander," Buffy countered. "You'd get hurt. It'll be easier for me if I'm not worrying about

protecting you."

"Oh. Okay. You and Willow go do the superpower thing. I'll stay behind and putter around the batcave..." Xander gestured at Giles. "...with crusty old Alfred here."

Giles poured himself another drink. "Ahh. I am no Alfred, sir. You forget, Alfred had a job."

"Willow stays behind too," said Buffy. Now she was becoming frustrated too. "I'll do it alone."

"Great." Willow's anger was growing. "And then when you've got your new no arms, we'll all say, gee, it's a good thing we weren't there getting in the way of that!"

While all this was going on, Tara felt someone staring at her. She turned her head and saw it was Anya. The two of them looked silently at one another for a moment, then the ex-demon gave a subtle nod. Tara realized she was suggesting they get out of the way. It seemed like a good idea. She nodded.

There only seemed to be two choices available. Outside, or the bathroom. Tara wasn't prepared to leave without Willow so she got up and moved down the hall. Anya was a few steps behind her and was clearly no happier about the situation than she was. Once in the bathroom they discovered they had nothing to do, and also that even with a door and several walls between them and the others they could still hear voices.

"You think this'll go on awhile?" Tara asked. She had never seen the Scoobies fight like this before.

Anya shrugged her shoulder. "Hard to say."

Tara looked around, searching for something to say. "Nice bathroom."

Anya nodded. "Like the tile." It was hard to tell if she was serious or not. A heartbeat later, she glanced up at the blonde. "So, are you Willow's new orgasm friend?"

Tara's face turned beet red, and her throat constricted so much she could barely speak. "W-What?"

"You and Willow. You've been having lesbian sex, right?"

"W-What makes you s-say that?"

Anya looked the blonde right in the eye. "You had sex hair. I saw it when you and Willow got here. Xander and I get sex hair all the time. I think it comes from the sweat, or..."

Tara held up her hand. "H-Have you and Xander been t-talking about this?"

"Oh no. I wouldn't. Xander loves lesbians. I'd rather him not get interested in what the two of you do. It took me a long time just to get him over Buffy. Two women together would be like a dream come true for him, especially since he used to have a thing for one of them."

Tara blinked. "What?"

"You didn't know? Xander and Willow, they used to..."

Just then the bathroom door was jerked open. It was Willow. "Come on, Tara. We're leaving."

"O-Okay." Tara took her lover's hand. "Good-bye, Anya."

The ex-demon waved. "Have fun. Make sure to give her lots of orgasms."

Anya's parting comment should have made Tara blush, but she was too busy being concerned about Willow. The redhead didn't say a word on the way to Tara's room, and her aura surged. She understood why Willow didn't want to go to her own place; since sooner or later Buffy would likely turn up there.

Once they were alone in the room Willow clenched her fists and screamed through clenched teeth. Books flew off the blonde's desk as if they had been thrown by an unseen hand; one nearly hitting Miss Kitty, who hissed and dove under the bed. Then the string of lights lining the wall shorted out one by one.

Tara could feel the magic coming off Willow in waves. "No!" She grabbed the redhead's arm. "Sweety, you have to calm down. Don't let your emotions control your powers. It's dangerous."

"They...I...damn it!" Every candle in the room burst into flames. "What's going on, Tara? My friends." She shook her head. "Why is this happening?"

"I-I don't know. You guys had an argument. It happens. It's okay."

"But..."

"Trust me. Everything will be fine, once you've all had a chance to cool off."

Willow sighed. "Okay." The candles stayed lit but their flames dipped to normal preportions. "Goddess, it's just so noisy in here." She tapped her head. "My mind is racing."

"You want, umm, a distraction?" Tara spread her arms and smiled. "Come here."

"Yes ma'am."

After Willow left, Tara sat and stared out the window for a while, then decided to work on a report she was late turning in. She spent a couple of hours in the library and then rushed back to her room to see if Willow was there or if she had called. Finding nothing, she had dinner and then decided to go for a walk to clear her head.

For once the campus was peaceful. Willow, Buffy and Riley had told her UC Sunnydale was, for the moment at least, a safer place to be because many of the monsters were locked up in the Initiative, and those who remained free were hiding. Even so she had a stake and across with her, just in case.

As she was walking past Lowell House, Tara felt something. She wasn't sure what it was at first, but as she got closer to the fraternity she realized it was magic. Someone was doing a very powerful spell. She didn't know for sure how the Initiative would react to a witch, so when she want to investigate she made certain to be stealthy. As it turned out she needn't have bothered. No one answered her knock, and the inside looked abandoned. The magic was so much stronger inside it almost made her feel light-headed.

"Willow!" She could feel the redhead's essence surging, growing stronger, along with several others she did not recognize, then it felt as if they were flowing together, and she couldn't feel anything individually anymore. Now that she was concentrating she realized the magic seemed to be coming from directly beneath her.

In a hallway near the stairs Tara saw broken glass. There had been a mirror, apparently, hiding an elevator. The doors were shut tight, and wouldn't budge no matter how hard she tried to pry them open. She wondered if magic would work. As she was thinking this, the elevator doors started to part--apparently on their own. She took a step back, worried that some of the monsters downstairs might have escaped.

Instead, she saw Buffy. The Slayer was climbing a rope inside an empty elevator shaft, and had used one hand to open the doors. Even with such an effort she was not sweating or breathing hard, though she did appear surprised to see Tara. "Oh. Hey. I, uhh, didn't know anyone was up here."

"I w-was just passing by, and I thought...umm, w-what are you doing?"

"We, uhm..." Now that she was at the top, Buffy stopped. "Do you think you could...give me a hand here? I have to help the others up."

Tara blushed. "Oh. S-Sorry." She helped Buffy out, and glanced down the shaft. There were a number of people below, but she couldn't discern any particular faces. "Buffy. Is..."

"She's fine," the Slayer assured her. "Willow's fine."

Tara felt so much better, and sighed. "Good." They brought the wounded up first, and only then did Giles and Xander and Willow emerge. The redhead flew into her lover's arms as soon as she realized she was there, though they stopped just short of kissing because of all the eyes watching them. "Are you okay?"

Willow nodded. "I'm better." She stroked Tara's cheek. "Now. How did you know?"

"I felt...something. Will, w-what were you guys doing down there?"

"I'll tell you later. We have to get some of these people to the hospital."

The soldiers had more than enough cars to load every up, and Tara--who was, unfortunately, not in the same car as Willow--went along to the hospital with them. Things were frantic as Buffy and Giles tried to explain the claw and teeth marks on many of the Initiative men. With everything that was going on Tara lost sight of her lover, but knowing Willow was all right she was finally able to relax. A day of worrying took its toll. She fell asleep, curled up in a chair in the waiting room, and woke to someone gently stroking her hair.

Willow smiled down at her. "Hey."

"Hey." Tara sat up and embraced the redhead. "Goddess. I'm so glad you weren't hurt."

"It was rough. There were demons all over the place." Willow's eyes were gleaming as she smiled, in a way Tara had never seen before. "Tara, you should have...it was incredible. We did this spell. Giles and Xander and I. Adam was so powerful, but the three of us called on the power of the first Slayer and gave it, and ourselves, to Buffy. It was like we all merged together to help her. It was indescribable."

"Will, that's an incredibly dangerous thing to do."

The redhead nodded. "I know, but we were desperate. Buffy couldn't have stopped him otherwise."

"Still..."

"Sweety, it's fine. I was watching out for us the whole time. I wouldn't have let anything happen." Willow put her hand on Tara's cheek. "I had to get back to you."

There was no one around, so they stole a quick kiss.

"So, what are you going to do now?" Tara asked. "Do you want to come back to my place?"

Willow's face fell. "I can't. I mean, Goddess knows I want to." She kissed Tara again, even though she could feel a nurse watching them this time. "But there's still a...connection, between the three of us and Buffy. Remnants of the spell, probably. I'm afraid anything you and I do, well...everyone else might feel it too." Her cheeks reddened, and so did Tara's. "We were going over to Buffy's for a while. Xander's going to get some movies. Give everyone a chance to...wind down." She touched the blonde's face. "Is that okay?"

"Of c-course. I understand." Tara stood up. "You g-go with your friends. I'll just be..."

"Hey." Willow grabbed the blonde's hand as she started to turn away. "I know what you're thinking. Baby, I'm not running out on you. I swear. I wouldn't be good company right now. Even if we didn't have this whole...what was it Xander said...oh, this mind-meld thing happening, I'm so tense."

"I c-could relax you."

Willow stood up and smiled. "I know. Please, don't feel bad about this. I'll come and see you tommorrow, if the spell has worn off by then. If not, I'll call you. Okay?"

"Okay." Tara put her hands on Willow's shoulders and whispered. "Have fun." She nuzzled Willow's ear for good measure, smiling when the redhead shuddered in pleasure.

**

Even after her nap at the hospital Tara was tired when she got back to her room, so she took off her clothes and crawled into bed, asleep almost as soon as her head touched the pillow.

When she opened her eyes and saw the room around her, she immediately knew she was dreaming. It wasn't the first time something like this had happened. Her mother called it astral-dreaming. Under certain circumstances a witch's subconscious mind could draw upon her magic, usually when she was too physically and mentally drained to prevent or even be aware of it, to send out 'psychic feelers'. The concept was her mother's, though most of the terminology came from psychology classes she had taken.

The thing was, this was not her own dream. She was sure of it because she felt like an observer, and that had not ever happened before. Tara was confused, and more than a little worried. Looking around, she saw Willow sitting on her bed. The redhead was painting what appeared to be Greek letters on...her. On her bare back. Willow and an eerily Tara-like dream representation of herself.

"Goddess. What's going on here?"

"You!" A gravelly, semi-feminine voice echoed from the darkness around her. "Do not belong here!"

Tara turned in circles. "Hello? W-Who's there?"

"Go! Away!"

"Why? What's going on? What are you doing to Willow?"

"She was part. She is mine!"

Tara saw Willow get up off the bed and got to the window, then suddenly they were backstage in a theater. They included Riley, Buffy, Xander and Giles, all wearing strange costumes.

"Stop this! Leave Willow alone!"

"No! She must pay!"

Tara frowned. "For what?"

"Awakening me. Awakening the power."

The blonde gasped. "Oh no. You're...the first Slayer?"

"Yes."

"The s-spell, that W-Willow and the others did. It brought you back with them?"

"I am the power of the Slayer as it exists, now and forever. This one..." Everyone but Buffy vanished from Tara's sight, leaving the blondes floating alone in a sea of blackness. "...seeks to distance herself from that truth. Power is all. She cannot be allowed to break the line."

"What do you mean?"

"This one should not exist. One girl. One Slayer. Only one." Buffy disappeared, and in her place was a face Tara was less familiar with. A pretty, brown-haired young woman in black leather. "This one."

Tara blinked. "Faith."

"Through her should the destiny travel, and yet this one..." Faith was replaced by Buffy. "...maintains the focus. I cannot allow this. That is why I have come."

"But why are you picking on Willow? She hadn't hurt you or the Slayer line."

"Yes. She and the other two have altered this balance further. They polluted my heritage. And they protect her. I cannot strike at her, until I have dealth with them."

Tara shook her head. "No. I won't let you hurt Willow! I'll find a way to stop you!"

"Bite your tongue, young lady." Tara twirled around. Her father was standing there, glaring at her. "That's no way to speak to your elders."

Tara felt more scared than before. She was cold too.

"Now Tarabear." He spread his arms. "Aren't you going to give your father a hug?"

"Of course. I'm s-sorry." Tara stepped forward and hesitantly embraced him, even though some part of her knew it wasn't actually her father at all. As his arms enveloped her, he changed.

It was Donny now. Her older brother. While he held her tightly with one arm, in the other he was raising a thick leather strap; the same one he always used to discipline her at their father's order. He never whipped her himself, and he never stayed around to see how enthusiastic Donny tended to get.

"You've been a bad girl, T." Donny sneered. "Now, you gotta pay the price."

He brought the strap down...and Tara woke up, screaming.

"Goddess. No. Willow."

Tara rushed to the phone. She was in the middle of calling Buffy's when she happened to glance at the clock on the wall, and noticed it was three AM. Too late, or early, to call. She hung the phone up and sat down at her desk, resting her head in her hands. "Willow."

The spirit of the first Slayer was after her girlfriend. Probably her friends too. But there wasn't much she could do about it. She was in their dreams, which had all been connected by the spell they had cast. She couldn't fight a dream spirit after all. "Or can I?"

Something occurred to Tara, and she reached for one of her magical texts. She'd astral-dreamt once already, so there was no reason to think she couldn't do it again.

Only this time, she would be prepared.

**

Tara found the spell she was looking for, arranged the proper components and said the chant. Then she fell into a deep, magical sleep, and her mind wandered free from her body. She searched for Willow's dream but found it was over. There was only a vague sense of the redhead's mind, along with Xander's and Giles'. But one other was still active, and she stepped into her dream instead.

Buffy. Now she was in a desert. Another version of herself was there too, walking toward Buffy. The Slayer did not seem to understand what was going on. Neither of them recognized the bizarre little man with the cheese, but when as the beast-woman appeared Tara knew she was the spirit of the first Slayer.

"Buffy, listen to me." The first Slayer glared at her while her other self was talking. "You can't fight her. That's what she wants. She says she's the source of your power." Buffy didn't seem to hear her, but she continued trying to get through to her. "Don't you see? The more you fight her, the stronger she'll be."

The Slayers started fighting, despite of Tara's warning. The spell wasn't working. She was supposed to be a part of the Scoobies shared dream so she could influence it and hopefully help stop the first Slayer. But Buffy wasn't listening. She was refusing help she wasn't even aware of, though from what Willow had told her she wasn't sure Buffy would have accepted anyway. The Slayer tended to be stubborn, sometimes to a fault.

"Buffy, stop it! You're going to get the others killed!" Tara threw herself at the Slayer, but passed right through her like a ghost. In that moment their surrounding changed from a hot, sandy desert, to Buffy's house. The Slayer looked just as confused as Tara. "Whoa. What is..." Then the first Slayer reappeared, tackled Buffy, and began to repeatedly drive a knife into her chest. "No!"

It wasn't affecting her. Buffy only reaction was to look perturbed. She said something to this effect, pushed the first Slayer off her, and went over to the couch. She grabbed a blanket and sat down, while the first Slayer cocked her head. All of a sudden Tara realized Willow, Xander and Giles were there too.

Then they vanished.

Snarling, the first Slayer turned to Tara. "You! Interfered! Not your place!"

"I couldn't just let you hurt them."

"Why?"

"Because they're my friends. And Willow is..."

"You love her?"

Tara nodded. "Yes, I do. With all my heart and soul."

"Love is a weakness. Strength. Power. That will keep you alive. Love only kills."

"I don't believe that. Love makes us strong."

The first Slayer grunted. "Fool. You think you know. What's to come. What you are." She shook her head. "You haven't even begun." She stepped into the shadows and vanished, like smoke.

Tara sighed. "Thank the Goddess. It's over!" The first Slayer's words had struck a chord with her. "What was that she said?" Her surrounding were dim now. She was being drawn back to her body. "You think you know. What's to come. What you are. You haven't even begun." Even though the Scoobies collective dream had dissipated, thanks to their momentary connection in the dream she still touched Buffy's consciousness. Her thoughts echoed in the Slayer's mind as well.

"You think you know. What's to come. What you are. You haven't even begun."

THE END

Life is much too serious to be taken seriously.

Willow is a tree that weeps, but Tara is firmer and will hold.

Thanks for a great story! I always appreciate a reworking of season 4 to include Tara. There were so many gaps, things left unexplained. And you've done a good job of filling them in here.

I like Amanda , as an admirer cum friend of Tara's. It's nice for Tara to have a confidant, someone at the very least to bounce her thoughts off of. It helps her (and us) to gain a better understanding of her life and her self.

I especially liked your take on Restless. I love that the first slayer is pissed because Buffy's not the *actual* slayer. :laugh I've never seen it approached in that way, but it makes a lot of sense.

Willow was so blasé on the show about Tara's absence that night, and I love how you explain it - they don't wanna share their sexiness with the Scoobies. hehe

And I like that Tara plays an active role in the dreaming. The show's treatment of Tara in Restless seemed indicative to me of their treatment of Tara in general; just kinda there in the background subconscious, available to make a point or a statement whenever necessary, only to fade into oblivion again. Okay, so that's a little dramatic, but I digress.

Tara's perceptiveness was key in solving the Buffy/Faith bodyswitch, and I love that you don't forget that here. Tara senses something going on at the Lowell house, and shows up after Adam is defeated. A great idea. And she realizes that something's up with the scoobies in dreamland, and tries to do something about it! That's the kind of Tara I love to see - inherently Scooby.

Anyway, thanks for the story. I'll continue to look for any you may write in the future. :)

What an ending... I applaud you. I wish I had something constructive to say, but I don't.

I'm glad that Tara managed to deal with the first Slayer though. It strikes me as the kind of thing she'd do.

I believe in the madness called "now."
