Part 4Willow stood against the sink in the girls toilets, with her head tilted backwards and a paper towel pressed against her nose. Faith had told her that would stop the blood. The brunette grabbed some paper towels and held them under the running water.
Faith: What exactly was going on back there?
Willow: I was getting hammered.
Faith: I could see that.
Willow: Ow!
Faith: Sorry.
Gently, Faith began wiping away the blood from around Willow’s injuries. It looked worse than it was. Her nose was bleeding, but not broken, and a large bruise covered her cheek. She’d been cut above her eyebrow and the blood was running down the side of her face, and she had a spilt lip.
Faith: So?
Willow sighed.
Willow: They said Lewis saw me hanging with some girl from Sunny High last night.
Faith: Were you?
Willow: No, of course not! Do you think I’m that stupid? And even if I was with someone from Darwin, do you think I’d be dumb enough to let people around here see?
Faith: I guess not.
She threw a bloodied paper towel into the trashcan and continued cleaning the redhead’s cuts with another.
Faith: So you weren’t with anyone last night?
Willow: I was with someone, but they aren’t from Sunnydale high.
Faith: How do you know?
Willow: I just know. They would have mentioned something like that.
Faith: Will, you don’t just walk up to someone and say: Oh hi, nice to meet you. I love your hair and by the way, I go to SD high.
Willow rolled her eyes.
Faith: Our schools have got a lot of history, and unless you know for definite that the person you’re talking to doesn’t go to the opposite school, then you’re not going to announce it.
Willow: Faith-
Faith: You gotta listen to me on this one, Will. I might not be there to save your ass next time. Don’t hang with them unless they definitely go to this school. You’ve already got those three on your back, you don’t need anymore hassle.
Willow: Maybe you’re right.
Sunnydale
After Buffy and Xander had headed home, Tara had decided to take a walk. She needed some time to think.
Maybe…. Maybe you should try thinking about something else. Something that isn’t Willow. She sighed and buried her hands inside her pockets.
You know, you’re probably not going to see her again anyway. You’re just torturing yourself. The voice in the back of her head was enjoying telling her the facts a little too much. She knew all of this.
But I can’t help it….Willow, there was something about her. Tara had noticed it the first time she’d seen her. It was as if she glowed. She was special.
And beautiful, and funny, and smart, and….She really could go on forever, but Tara knew it wouldn’t do any good.
One; Willow’s probably straight and had masses of boys lining up to take her out. Two; Even if she isn’t, there’s no way she’s going to want someone like me.She found herself standing outside her house and with a heartfelt sigh; Tara walked up her driveway and opened the front door.
Donny: What the hell are you doing home?
Tara: The s-s-school’s c-closed.
Donny: What do you mean the school’s closed?
Tara: S-someone broke in.
Her brother, Donny, leaned back on his chair, leaving it standing on two legs, and grinned.
Donny: Well, looks like dad and me are going to get to have our talk with you early.
Tara: T-talk?
Donny: About where you were last night.
Tara: L-last night? I-I-I d-didn’t-
Donny: Don’t lie, Tara. Dad doesn’t like liars. I heard you come in. You thought everyone was asleep, but I wasn’t.
Tara swallowed hard.
Donny: Dad’s going to be livid when he gets back and I tell him you left the house when you weren’t supposed to.
Tara: Oh, D-Donny, please don’t t-tell him.
Donny: Sorry sis, you broke the rules.
She hung her head and started to leave the room when Donny stood up and put his hand out in front of her.
Donny: Oh, and uh, don’t try the “I was with my boyfriend” thing like last time. You and I both know you’re too ugly and stupid to get anyone.
Tara pushed back the tears. She wasn’t going to let him see her cry. She pushed past him and ran up the stairs to her room. Throwing herself on her bed, she left the tears fall. Her dad would be home in a few hours, and then things would get much worse.
DarwinWillow was aware of the looks she was getting from people as she walked down the hallway with Faith, but the brunette had suggested it would be best if she just ignored them. It was easier said than done. She couldn’t take it anymore and was one step away from blowing her top.
Willow: If one more person looks at me like that, I’m gonna-
Faith: Willow chill. I’ve got it sorted.
They walked into the cafeteria and everyone turned to them, falling silent. Faith smiled at everyone and walked to a table at the back where Oz was sitting, Willow following her.
Oz: How goes it?
Faith: I’m trying to stop Willow from killing everyone in the school. You know, the usual.
He nodded and went back to his lunch. Willow and Faith sat down opposite him and the redhead fidgeted with her fingers.
Faith: This is really bugging you, isn’t it?
Willow: Yes it’s bugging me! Every one thinks I’ve committed this major, unforgivable crime. It’s not like I’ve killed anyone.
A blonde girl walked past and scowled at Willow. She stared after the girl.
Willow: Yet.
Faith: Twinkle, calm down.
Faith stood on her seat and turned to face the whole of the cafeteria. She whistled loudly to get everyone’s attention and sure enough, it worked. She tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled coyly at them all.
Faith: Sorry to distract you from the cafeteria’s pathetic excuse for food, but this’ll just take a second.
A few laughs surfaced at Faith’s joke and she coughed, clearing her throat.
Faith: Today, a friend of mine was accused of doing something she didn’t do. You all know my reputation and how…. Upset I get when people mess with my friends. So to save you from an ass kicking you probably don’t deserve, I’m gonna straighten things out. Willow Rosenberg was not with anyone from Darwin last night. Are you all shallow enough to believe anything that comes out of Kirk “full of himself” York’s mouth? No, I didn’t think so. He’s just pissed because Willow wouldn’t let him in her pants, just like most of you wouldn’t. Well, those of you with half a brain. Lets let sleeping dogs lie and nip this rumour in the butt, before it gets out of hand and I have to fend you all off with a shotgun, kay?
She saw people in the crowd nod and heard a few “yeah, whatever’s” and sat back down.
Faith: There, happy now?
Willow just glared at Faith.
Faith: What? I just did you a big favour.
Willow: I’d smack you if you weren’t only thinking of my best interests.
Faith nodded and smiled. She leaned across the table and stole Oz’s pudding. He lifted his gaze and looked at her.
Faith: You weren’t going to eat this, right?
He blinked a few times before waving his fork at her.
Faith: Thanks.
Willow was slumped in her seat, still scowling, when she noticed a girl walking towards her. She brightened and turned to Faith.
Willow: I bet you can’t drink all of that yoghurt in under five seconds.
Faith: Deal!
Faith started to gulp down the yoghurt when she heard Willow shout.
Willow: Cordelia! Come here for a sec!
Faith eyes widened and she threw the pudding cup down onto the table, turning to glare at Willow.
Faith: What the hell are you-
Cordelia: What is it?
Faith and Willow lifted their gaze to look at the cheerleader. She raised an eyebrow when she looked at Faith.
Cordelia: You’ve got something on you’re face.
The brunette frowned and Oz handed her a spoon.
Willow: Do we have a history project due?
Cordelia: No. I don’t think so.
Willow: Oh, okay. Thanks.
Cordelia walked out of the cafeteria and Faith’s eyes widened when she saw her reflection in the spoon. After drinking the yoghurt, it had left her with a chocolate coloured moustache.
Faith: Willow!!
The redhead laughed.
Willow: Now, we’re even.
SunnydaleThe rapping at Tara’s door jerked her from her thoughts. She new who it was and froze.
Mr Maclay: Tara. Open this door.
Tara: D-dad, I-I-I-
Mr Maclay: Now!
Tara didn’t move. She couldn’t. She was too scared. She knew what was going to happen if she let him in: the same thing that happened every night. Whether he had a reason for it or not. Suddenly, the door was kicked open, breaking the lock and almost blowing the door off its hinges. Mr Maclay stood in the doorway looking angry.
Mr Maclay: Donny told me you left the house last night.
Tara: N-n-no, I-I didn’t.
Mr Maclay: Are you lying to me?
Tara: N-n-no.
Mr Maclay: You know I don’t like lairs, Tara.
Tara could do nothing by cry out as his hand came speeding towards her.
DarwinWillow finally managed to get home without hitting anyone. Even after Faith’s speech at lunch, some people still weren’t convinced.
So what if she is from Sunnydale high? Like it’s any of their business anyway. She threw her bag in the corner of the hallway and climbed the stairs to her room.
They shouldn’t be sticking their noses into my life. If I wanna hang with Tara, I’ll hang with her.She sighed and walked into her bedroom.
If she’s from SD or not. This feud between them and us is nothing to do with me. Yeah, so I just happen to go to one of the rival schools, big deal. I’m not going to let this get to me.Willow knew it was easier said then done. She had always had a problem with people thinking they could think what they want about her. Not one of them knew anything about her. With the exception of Faith and Oz anyway, not one of them. She had always been somewhat of an outcast. Different from the others around her. Faith and Oz had been like that too, and when they met, it was a perfect match. They had always been so close, so when Faith came out, it wasn’t a big deal. Faith liked girls, so did Oz. In fact, she was the only one in their group who liked guys, and now it seemed as if that was changing. Although, she had never shown any interest in girls before, had she?
Tara’s just so…. She sighed, heavily.
So impossible not to fall in love with. She collapsed onto her bed and closed her eyes, Tara’s face filling her mind.
What am I going to do?Suddenly, a loud banging filled her eyes. She shot up off her bed and frowned. It took her a second to realise it was the front door. Willow walked back down the stairs and opened the door. She gasped when she saw the person in front of her. They had been beaten badly. So badly, part of their face was swollen and cuts and bruises almost completely covered it. The figure standing before her was hunched over, clinging to their arm in pain, sobbing.
Tara: I’m s-s-sorry…. I-I-I didn’t kn-know where else to g-g-go….
