I’ve been thinking about Tara’s family and why they’re so angry because no one can be that hostile without a compelling and valid reason, grief can turn to anger and thus the reason why Steve is so enraged with fury but I’ve made references early in the fic that Tara’s father had been like this even before his wife died and his fury within himself had only increased because of that death, so I’ve kind of dug myself a hole and I’m not too sure how to resolve this without having it feel like a Full House episode. Things like this can’t be solved with a simple flip of the wrist, there has to be a long process of healing and admitting mistakes, family counseling, discussions, heart to hearts, etc.
As you can see I’ve softened Donny and Steve a bit, him dropping the food for Tara at her room and merely leaving without a despicable comment to say and Steve telling Tara to go to her room without resorting to violence was a small step in that direction. As far as them not knowing where Tara is or where she’s going…well, a parent can’t keep tabs on their children 24/7 and we can always believe that Steve would be at work and Donny is out doing his own thing as well, thus Tara would be alone at home giving her the time to be with Willow.
I’ve been trying to work on Christmas Carols because I’ve kind of forgotten about it for a while, I want to write it with a better story and have it come back with a bang. That is if people still care about it.
Anyway, thanks for the replies. I want to thank you people individually later on to tell you kittens how much I appreciate the feedback and kind words, but that will come later since I managed to babble a bit already. Back to the fic!
Sorry for the delay but with Christmas and parties, things have been really hectic. I managed to eat myself to oblivion so I couldn’t even lift a finger to type anything for a few days.

Spreading Wings: The Strenuous Journey through life

The Date:Willow walked on silently, shaking her thoughts away from where it was previously. She needed to think about Tara, she needed to think good thoughts so she doesn't screw this up as well. She was almost there, her hands sweating in anticipation, anxiety, and eagerness.
When she finally reached her spot, their spot, she saw the blonde facing away from her, standing idly by the small, calming stream. The blonde wore a long red leather jacket that reached to her feet, her back was still to Willow so the redhead didn't know what the blonde was wearing underneath or how her face looked.
Willow walked slowly behind Tara, taking small steps. Tara tilted her head as she sensed Willow behind her, slowly she turned, her hair swaying gently in the wind as she gave Willow a blistering sweet smile, her deep blue depths shimmering brightly under the beaming rays of the luminous sun.
She looked so much like an angel, a shining angel sent down from heaven for Willow.
Just for Willow.
"Are you ready for our date?" The blonde smiled at the redhead, her eyes sparkling even more.
Willow nodded, her words catching in her throat.
'I'm ready.' Willow thought.
Tara gave Willow another radiant and luminescent smile, not moving an inch from where she was quietly standing by the small stream of their special place. The blonde merely offered her hand to Willow, her left arm outstretched, her sapphire orbs never leaving its lock on Willow’s emerald green. Magnetically, the redhead was drawn to Tara and she immediately walked those extra steps to Tara’s embrace, their hands interlocking in an instant.
“You look beautiful.” Willow commented in a smile as she tightly held onto Tara’s soft hand. “Not to mention hot, I mean look at that leather jacket!” Willow reached over to touch the material of Tara’s sleeve, rubbing her fingers over the fabric over and over. “I have never seen you look more hotter.” She looked up to meet Tara’s eyes, smiling brightly.
“Well, I think you look even more stunning.” Tara squeezed Willow’s hand more gently, feeling the electrical current of their joined palms vibrating throughout her body in a soothing flow of energy and she was sure that it went the other way for Willow as well. The bond between them was unquestionable.
“You went all out, you know you didn’t really have to.” she indicated Willow’s clothes and hair as she gently pulled the redhead even closer to her, needing to feel Willow’s warmth and ease against her cool skin.
“I had to look good for our date.” Willow stated simply, her voice was low and barely above an audible whisper, she was captivated by Tara’s beauty the same way Tara was captivated by hers. “A girl has to make an effort for her girl.”
“Well, I think you look incredible, breathtaking really, it makes it kind of hard to control myself.” Tara leaned down to kiss Willow on her left cheek, when she pulled back Tara was surprised to feel Willow’s lips against her own. Tara was shocked and startled but she managed to compose herself enough to kiss the redhead back leaving a few fleeting kisses on Willow’s lips as well before reluctantly but eventually pulling back.
“What was that for?” Tara’s hands rested on Willow’s shoulders in an attempt at balancing herself when she felt her knees go weak at her touch.
“Well, you with the shiny lip gloss and the fragrant smelling perfume, not to mention that stunning leather jacket…” Willow blushed and looked down at their interlocked hands; she shook her head a bit at what she had just done before lifting her gaze to Tara’s cobalt depths, seeing the sparkling amusement inside the blonde’s shimmering spheres. “You’re not the only one who can’t control themselves.”
“You caught me.” Tara confessed as their lips met once again, quickly but just as passionate. “And as much as I love kissing you, let’s try to control ourselves for now, that’s rule one.”
“Because if we start kissing again we’ll be lost in the moment and then we won’t have the time to talk and get to know each other like we promised ourselves we would do?” Willow babbled as she traced her slender index finger over Tara’s soft lips.
“Exactly.” Tara just nodded as she leisurely led the two of them away from the small stream. “Do you think you can last a whole day without ravishing my lips with yours?” she stopped to chuckle at herself when she realized that she had to ask herself that same exact question and promise herself to do that same exact thing. “And I have to ask myself that as well.”
“What is it telling you?” Willow swung their links hands together affably, walking to nowhere in particular. She felt so comfortable with Tara, she could just walk down these with her, holding hands, and it would be the best date that she has ever been in. That is if you can call it a date, they hadn’t really started in the order of how things should go dating-wise.
They saw each other, then they made out, they exchanged each other’s names, they made out once more before confessing their love, and now they were going out on a date. None of that fit in with the order of things, but they made their own rules.
“That I should get to know you.” Tara said honestly.
“What do you want to know about?”
“I want to know the very essence that is Willow.” She stated simply. “I want to know what makes you…” she paused to think of the right word, her eyes sparkled when she finally did. “You.”
Willow was quiet for a moment. “That’s hard to answer.” She sighed as she looked down to her feet, thinking of what to say. “What makes me me?”
Tara merely nodded. ”Who is Willow?”
Willow swallowed a bit as she tried to figure an answer for Tara's question, but she came up with nothing, Tara's question confused her. Willow looked up to Tara’s gaze and frowned. “I’m me?” she said in a small voice, not knowing what else to say. "Yeah, that's it...I'm me, all with the Willowness." she smiled.
Tara giggled. “Well, that narrows it down.”
“Well, I don’t know how to answer that, Tara.” Willow whined as they continued to walk down the sidewalk and ahead. “I mean I’m a lot of things…I’m a good friend, I’m a people person, I love books, I love life…” she listed out all the things that popped into her head that she thought had explained herself as best as she could, she then stopped their progressing steps and turned to Tara.
Tara turned to Willow as well.
“I love you.” Willow voiced softly as she took Tara’s hand into her own and brought it to her lips. “I love being with you and I know that there are a lot more to say and I want to tell you everything.” She finished quietly, looking down.
“We have all the time in the world to tell each other everything, Willow.” Tara was confident. “I don’t know where life will take us, it’s pretty much unpredictable, and I’m eager to see where…we go…but I want to ride this out with you.” She stated and then added more quietly. “For however long that will be.”
Willow lifted her head. “I want forever.”
“Forever?” Tara began her slow strides once again, bringing Willow with her as they continued with their walk. “Willow, we’ve only known each other for two days, not even two days, I mean if you count the hours…it’s been barely a whole movie that we’ve known each other.” She pulled at her ear nervously and then turned to face Willow once again, she looked at Willow just once before the redhead took her hand and brought it into hers. “I mean today is the day that we’re supposed to—”
“Today is the first day of the rest of our lives.” Willow voiced softly. “But I also can’t help but think about the other obstacles we have.” Willow pointed out as she shook her head. “Not everyone wants us to be together, Tara.” She finished quietly.
Tara turned her head and looked into Willow’s eyes, seeing the answer written all over the olive orbs. Her father.
Willow just nodded and then gave Tara an anxious look, a worried frown, a sad smile. “I’ve been worrying about your father.” The redhead took a few steps ahead and then stopped and brought both her hands into Tara’s, lifting them into the air between their two bodies and squeezing softly. “I mean he didn’t want us to be together, he told us that point blank, not that I care about what he says…I mean, nothing will ever change my mind about being with you but seeing the way he dragged you away…”
“Willow…” Tara brought their hands down and disengaged, looking down at her feet. “That doesn’t matter.” She shook her head.
“It matters to me, Tara.” Willow stated adamantly but gently, trying to catch the blonde’s blue depths into her green ones, needing the eye contact. “I don’t want to have to climb your window every time I want to see you.” She said softly and then dipped her head to meet Tara’s gaze. “We shouldn’t have to hide the fact that we’re together, to your father of to anyone else.”
Tara looked dejected.
“No matter how much fun and daring that was for me to do.” She tried to lighten up the mood, smiling slightly. “I love you Tara and I’m sorry if I ruined our get to know each other day but I felt like I had to bring that up.”
“I don’t want to have to do that either…I don’t want to always have to hide the fact that I’m with you, Will.” Tara amended and then continued to walk. “But as far as my father is concerned…he’s been completely non-emotional since my mother died and I-I can’t help him with that, I can’t help him with anything.” She finished softly; her face was somber and solemn. “He won’t even talk to me and I can’t talk to him and that’s how things…are.”
“Okay.” Willow relented, her voice softening. “So, what do we do about that?”
“I don’t know what you mean.” Tara shook her head, and then continued walking her slow strides. “Willow, I don’t know what to do…I’m just at a loss as you are on how this will go, the best that I can hope for is that he changes his mind but I can’t promise anything…either way Willow, I still want to be with you.”
Willow merely nodded and was silent for long moment before saying her next words. “Maybe I shouldn’t have brought it up.” Willow looked down at her feet, realizing that she had hit a hard cord of the blonde’s and seeing Tara upset and hurt broke her heart. “I’m sorry.”
Tara was silent for a long moment before she brought her hands into Willow’s. “No, you had to.” She insisted, bringing up their interlocked hands together. “You’re right, the thing with my father is an issue and it needed to be brought up and maybe your family too?” she questioned with a raised eyebrow. “You never told me about yours.”
“My mother doesn’t care.” Willow shook her head. “I could probably bring you to dinner tonight and she won’t even see you, she sees what she wants to see and I’m sure she wouldn’t want to see you with me.” The redhead silently confessed as they continued their walk. “I’m sorry that brought on all this gloom.” She said after a moment, taking in how their happy conversation had evolved into this serious and glum exchange of dialogue.
“Willow…” Tara began to say but was interrupted.
“No, Tara…” Willow stopped their tracks and stood in the middle of the sidewalk, she looked deep into Tara’s blue depths and tried to see in deeper. “This was supposed to be our date-day, all with the happiness, and I…I brought up your father which reminded you of your mom, which reminded me of my mom, which I don’t even want to think about….and now you wont even look at me.” She explained when she noticed that Tara’s gaze was to the floor and no to her.
Tara was looking at her feet and nothing else.
“I’ve ruined things once again.” Willow chastised herself, her eyes still to the floor.
“Ruined things?” Tara’s lifted her head and her brow furrowed in confusion, she put a hand over Willow’s shoulder and tried to catch her downcast eyes. “Willow what are you talking about?” Willow wasn’t making much sense and she was utterly confused at why she was so upset, what did she ruin? If she was talking about our day then she’s wrong, nothing can ruin our date. Not even this.
“I ruined things, I always ruin things.” Willow stated matter of factly, shaking her head in frustration. “And this time is worse because I really love being with you and to the point where I don’t think I can be without you and the other girl was…”
“Willow…” Tara grabbed both of Willow’s shoulders and shook her a bit, bringing her to sanity. “You didn’t ruin anything.” she stressed, gazing deeply into Willow’s eyes. “You didn’t ruin anything.” the blonde expressed slowly, letting Willow absorb the words. “Nothing is ruined Willow.”
“Then why does it feel ruined?” Willow brought her hands to rest on either side of Tara’s waist while Tara’s hands were resting comfortably on the redhead’s shoulders; they were so close together but yet so far apart. “This day was supposed to be happy.” She said softly.
“It still is.” Tara stared deeply into Willow’s green depths. “Yeah, our families aren’t the best out there but getting to know each other involves getting to know more about our families, the good and the bad.” She stressed. “And I do mean bad.” She chuckled.
“So I didn’t ruin things?” Willow asked in the smallest voice she could muster. “Because I tend to babble and I say things at the most horrible of times and I don’t realize it until it’s too late and by then there’s no going back and I want to be able to control myself and limit the babbling but it’s like a dam that breaks loose and I can’t stop it and want to—”
Tara suddenly brought her lips to Willow’s, kissing her tenderly and passionately. She needed to shut Willow up and this was the only way she knew how, not only was it enjoyable to her and to both of them as well, but it was the best way to get the redhead to calm down and think, clear her head. Willow did have a mouth on her.
“What happened to your rule about no kissing?” Willow tightly grabbed onto Tara’s back, tugging her closer. “That we needed to talk and get to know each other?”
“I had to stop your babbling.” Tara explained, grazing her thumb gently onto Willow’s bottom lip. “Willow, our date hasn’t even begun yet, we’re not even close to that….we have a whole day of talking and walking and if we get hungry we can catch a bite to eat and then talk some more…” Tara shook her head and then softly cupped Willow’s face with the palm of her hands. “The good and the bad, Willow.” She voiced warmly. “The good and the bad.”
Tara gazed intensely into Willow’s emerald depths.
“I like pizza.” Willow acknowledged abruptly, giving Tara a small smile. “And I have this huge obsession with Xena.”
“As in warrior princess?” Tara lifted an eyebrow and then continued their walk. “The TV show?”
Willow just nodded.
“You have a huge obsession with the show or do you have a huge obsession with the character?” Tara smiled; the mood that had once been gloomy was now back to being filled with contentment and delight, not to mention happiness. “Because I’m kind of wondering about that.”
“Both.” Willow smiled. “There’s just something about her, the whole being an amazon thing, the whole female empowerment message it sends.”
“Oh.” Tara brought her right hand into Willow’s left as they continued to walk down the Californian streets. “Okay.” She simply nodded. “Female empowerment, right.”
“You should try watching it sometime.” Willow suggested. “Maybe we could watch it together?”
“I don’t see how we can do that but…okay.” Tara tilted her head. “Maybe I can sneak into your house like you did for me?” She smiled and caught Willow’s eyes. “And I know you said we can’t keep doing that but it might be fun to do it just once.”
“You might not have to.” Willow shrugged and swung their joined hands just once, almost skipping. “My parents are off a lot doing conferences and meetings out of state, so they’re usually not here.” She explained with a small smile. “You can just knock on my front door if you want to, no ladders necessary.”
“Maybe we should just focus on getting to know each other before we start thinking about spending a night in each other’s houses.” She smiled. “But I’ll consider it.”
Willow and Tara were completely comfortable together, the two girls continued to walk ahead, to no where in particular. They were just enjoying the pleasant day outside and relishing in the feel of them together, just leisurely walking down the concrete pathways and sidewalks near the residential streets.
The sky was sapphire blue with little clouds blocking the luminous sun, the gleaming rays of sunlight was so strong and brilliant that it provided a soft warmth upon anyone who was outdoors, it was just a beautiful day for a quiet walk and a peaceful picnic. Which is exactly what Tara had in mind.
Tara wanted to have a private picnic with Willow, in a private place, over looking a small pond. She left her picnic basket near a large oak tree that provided much needed shade and took the chances of leaving it there until they reached the area, she was sure no one was going to steal it but with squirrels and raccoons, anything could happen. But she took the chance.
"Tara, is there anywhere in particular we were suppose to be?" Willow questioned as they continued their quiet trek down the cement walkways of the small town, as they continued their walk they reached a small grassy clearing, a park like community, and wouldn’t you know…a beautiful area that was perfect for a quiet picnic.
“You’ll see.” Tara pulled Willow into the small park area, all the way in the corner of the green lot; she tugged Willow gently until they reached a large tree and on the grassy floor sat an oversized blanket and a small picnic basket.
It was all too romantic and sweet, not to mention the picturesque and scenic view they had of a small pond and the cute baby ducks that were swimming nearby. Other than the small animals that were there, the two girls had all the privacy in the world, the park was surprisingly deserted. “You like?” Tara asked softly, carrying a beaming smile as she helped Willow sit on the large plush blanket.
“Tara, this place is beautiful.” Willow managed to utter when she sat down. “Tara, thank you for doing this.” She stated honestly, loving how romantic the scene seemed.
Willow looked up to see Tara beginning to sit down as well, leaning her back against the hefty trunk of the oak tree. As the blonde leaned comfortably against the large tree, Tara gently pulled Willow into her so the redhead could lean against Tara. That’s how they sat, with the blonde cradling Willow from behind and Willow leaning against Tara’s chest, her head resting on the other girl’s soft shoulder.
“I just figured this would be better than going to a restaurant.” Tara leaned forward, without disengaging Willow from her and grabbed the picnic basket into her arms.
Willow just nodded.
“With people with cell phones and all the TV’s they have now, how are we ever going to talk?” Tara opened the top of the basket and carefully pulled out all the bits of food she had prepared after her father left for work and Donny began his job at a local construction company helping the workers carry and store large lumber and metal debris, it was a job that paid little but it was something to do, they never knew what Tara was cooking up for Willow, and for now, Tara liked it that way.
“I hope you like orange juice.” Tara commented, handing the small bottle to the beaming redhead. “If not, I brought some water and soda.” She softly explained.
“I love orange juice.” Willow smiled and took the offered bottle from the blonde, the redhead moved a bit from Tara’s chest and sat a little ahead of her so Tara could be more comfortable when digging through the basket and at least then they would be face to face, sitting contentedly across from each other. “Tara, did you put together all this food yourself…for me?”
“For us.” Tara smiled and then uncapped the lid of a small plastic container that held various fruits that were perfect for a picnic. “I have grapes, strawberries, kiwi slices…” the blonde listed all the pieces of fruit that she had inside. “I hope you’re not allergic to any of that.” She locked her eyes to Willow’s. “You’re not right?” she asked worriedly. “Because if you are I can always…”
“Baby, I’m not allergic to anything.” Willow assured, her eyes widened when she realized that it was the first time she had ever called Tara ‘baby’, she swallowed and glanced at the blonde nervously.
“Baby?” Tara smiled and blushed; she reached into her picnic basket and pulled out a single red rose. Tara studied the flower and handed it to Willow, her blue depths met Willow’s cobalt green and her heart nearly melted at the contact. “For you…baby.” She said the last word with a half-smile and her body shivered as she did so, it felt so right. “My heart to your heart?”
Willow nodded. “My heart to your heart.”
Tara smiled and unwrapped a sandwich she had prepared for the two of them. “I made some turkey sandwiches for us.” She voiced and then handed it to Willow gently. “I hope you’re hungry; you’re not a vegetarian are you?” she inquired as an afterthought, hoping that she wasn’t.
“No.” Willow shook her head. “I tried once but when I saw Buffy and Xander eating pepperoni pizza, right in front of me might I add, I didn’t last any much longer than that.” She chuckled and pulled a long blade of green grass at the side of her. “As much as I want to be a vegetarian, I just don’t think I have the discipline right now.”
“I know what you mean.” Tara nodded softly, smiling.
“Tara, tell me about yourself.” Willow said suddenly as she got up and snuggled into Tara, her body was resting against the other girl’s chest comfortably.” I want to know everything.”
Tara once again leaned against the tree and helped Willow lie against her, holding her into her arms as they quietly told the other about their lives. Tara took Willow’s hands into her own and squeezed the redhead’s small hands softly, hugging the other girls more firmly into her chest, gripping Willow’s shoulders gently. Tenderly cradling her, embracing her from behind, Willow sighed at the contact and fixated her eyes to their interlocked hands.
“I always loved getting up in the morning to watch the sun rise with my mom.” Tara softly stroked Willow’s arm, her eyes were sad when she remembered the good times she had before her mother died. “Dad and Donny were still asleep but my mother and I were always wide awake, we would sit at the steps of our back yard and wait for the sun to come up.” She continued in a soft voice. “I still feel her arms around me when I go out by myself.” Tara bit her lip and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath.
“I wish I could do that with my mother.” Willow voiced gently, shaking her head. “You must really miss her.” She added.
“Every single day.” Tara nodded softly and then rested her chin on the top of Willow’s head.. “But being with you makes things better.”
Willow just nodded and began playing with Tara’s slender fingers. “Xander, Buffy, and I would go to the beach at night and light a small fire.” The redhead added her part to the conversation, thinking about all the times she spent with her best friends. “We would bring a small boom box and dance around the blaze.” She giggled and continued playing with the blonde’s fingers. “It’s like a tradition for us.” She lifted her head and looked deeply into Tara’s deep blue depths. “You can come with us one day.” She offered. “You and Jarred.”
“I would love to.” The blonde smiled and then she leaned forward to grab a small batch of seedless grapes, she leaned back to the tree and picked a grape from the brown stem and waved it gently in front of Willow, the blonde watched Willow’s pink tongue slip out, begging for a taste of the delectable grape, Tara smiled and carefully placed the fruit into Willows’ mouth. “How is it?” she asked.
“Delicious.” Willow mouthed, softly chewing the small fruit. “But you’re more delicious.” She smiled and then leaned up to kiss the blonde softly on the lips. “Tara-tongue.” She mumbled and then leaned up to kiss Tara once again. “I can taste you forever.”
“We have forever.” Tara stroked the redhead’s ruby colored tresses gently, kissing her softly; she then leaned back, pulling Willow against her, embracing her tenderly. “You want forever, right?”
“It’s the one thing that feels right.” Willow voiced affectionately. “I doubt that anyone, even your father, can keep us apart.”
Tara smiled softly and squeezed Willow tightly, she looked ahead of them as she saw a pack of baby ducks following their mother duck in the water, Willow looked up to Tara and saw that the blonde’s attention was elsewhere. She followed Tara’s gaze and smiled at the adorable sight. “How come our families can’t be like that?” Willow questioned, snuggling even deeper into Tara’s embrace. “If simple ducks can do it…”
“Humans have more baggage.” Tara shrugged her shoulders in defeat. “You just need to give them time, my family and yours.”
Willow merely nodded and sighed, nestling her face into Tara’s chest, the blonde softly caressed the side of Willow’s face, her thoughts replaying a mile a minute in her head, the two girls sat like that in comfortable silence, just reveling in the simple feel of each other in the other’s arms, feeling the warm sensation of each other’s touch, shivering in longing and contentment. Tara lifted Willow’s hands into her own and gently kissed the redhead’s slender fingertips.
“When is your birthday, Tara?” Willow broke the calm silence; she lifted her head and gave the other girl a questioning glance. “I want to give you the biggest birthday present ever.” She smiled.
“February 14th.” Tara grabbed a small strawberry and gently placed it onto the redhead’s lips; she watched as Willow opened her mouth and took a small bite into the red fruit. She moaned in pleasure and mimicked Tara’s movements, feeding each other compassionately. “I was born on Valentines Day.”
Willow lifted her head, her eyes widening at the revelation. “That’s perfect!” Willow exclaimed and frowned. “I won’t be able to celebrate your birthday for another six months but…I’ll still be here.” She finished softly. “Promise me you’ll be there too.” She pleaded to Tara, their hands still interlocked.
“I’ll be there.” Tara promised, softly caressing Willow’s red hair, she leaned down and tenderly kissed the other girl’s silky locks. “I’ll be there, Willow.”
“We still have a lot to talk about.” Willow stated softly, she got up from Tara’s embrace and picked up her forgotten turkey sandwich, she took a large bite of the snack and turned back to Tara, her mouth still full.
"We have all day to talk and we have all day to do this." Tara stated to say before gently pushing Willow to lie on her back, resting against the soft plushy blanket.
Tara rested her body on top of Willow's, her elbows on either side of the redhead's face. Tara gave Willow the most devilish and coy smile that chilled her to the bone. Willow was startled, she swallowed the food that was in her mouth and gulped, before she knew it Tara's mouth was on hers, kissing her passionately.
Willow relaxed her hands and pulled Tara into her, kissing her back. The two girls lay on the large oversized balnket, under the shimmering glow of the shining sun, right beside the swimming ducks, against the tall oak tree, a forgotten picnic basket at their side.
They continued to kiss, not caring who saw them.
