Developing: Beauty and the Beast: Willow and Tara Edition

Postby SithLordWiccan » Thu Apr 12, 2007 5:34 pm

This is a story I started way back in the day that, for various reasons, I never really went back to. Nowadays, I'm revisiting a few of my old fic ideas, and seeing which, if any of them, are really deserving of having another look. Seeing as how I had more of this one done than any of the others, I figured I'd post it and see what kind of reception it gets, and thus whether or not a continuation is really warranted.

***

• Title: Beauty and the Beast: The Willow and Tara Edition
• Author: Alex
• Email address: decepticons_4_ever@hotmail.com
• Feedback: I live and breathe by the feedback I get for my fics, so I hope I get a steady supply.
• Distribution: Through the Looking-glass (http://www.uberwillowtara.com)
• Rating: PG-13
• Pairing: Willow/Tara, though at the start there are hints of Willow/Oz. Naturally, by the end, there will be plenty of W/T gay love to go around.
• Disclaimer: Willow, Tara and other “Buffy” and “Angel” characters likely to appear in this story are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, the WB, UPN, 20th Century Fox and others. The underlying theme of the story, that of the story “Beauty and the Beast”, belongs to the folks at Disney. Though it should be noted that while this fic is based on the Disney movie, it’s rather graphic and angst ridden, so kids who’ve seen the movie probably shouldn’t read this.
• Summary: Willow Rosenberg lives in a quiet mountain village, dreaming of a life that she knows she’ll never have. Then she gets lost in the forest and stumbles into a haunted castle, where she meets the creature that will change her life forever.

Prologue

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who lived in a spectacular castle. Her name was Tara, and though she was born of royalty, her life was anything but that of a Princess. Her father, the King, was a selfish and dominating man who punished both his wife and daughter for the supposed injustices that they brought upon him.

The King had wanted a son in order to carry on his legacy, but had been driven into a furious rage when the Queen bore him a daughter. He kept mother and child locked in the West Wing tower until the child came of age, then released them and allowed them to return to their lives, making Tara Princess in name only.

Tara’s life had been a miserable one from that day forward. She had no friends, as she was not allowed to converse with the servants or the townsfolk. She was not allowed to participate in any of the royal events that took place every year, being forced to spend her time locked in her room while her father and mother made the token appearances and customary blessings.

Tara often thought of her mother. She was a beautiful woman who had often sacrificed what she wanted in order to ensure that Tara had a less painful childhood. Tara was thankful for that, though she often wondered what her mother could have done if she didn’t act like such a burden.

Then had come the day when her mother had died mysteriously. And though Tara could never prove it, she always thought that her father was responsible. He never remarried, and brought an end to the formal affairs that had been the norm, leaving himself and the rest of the castle’s inhabitants isolated from the rest of the world.

A year later, on a particularly bad night, an old woman had come to the castle seeking shelter. Although the majority of the castle’s inhabitants had wanted to offer the woman a respite, Tara’s father turned her away. He said that the castle was no place for people such as the old woman. She had asked politely again, but found her advances rebuffed.

It was then that the old woman muttered a chant and changed into a beautiful Goddess with the appearance of an angel and the spirit of a phoenix. She boldly declared that the King had no pure heart and transformed all the castle’s inhabitants into hideous creatures and placed a spell on the castle. Furious, Tara’s father fled into the forest in a feral state, never to be heard from again.

Tara herself, meanwhile, withdrew into herself, closing out what little contact she did have. The servants, having also been transformed, attempted to cheer her up and keep her from falling into despair. Taking pity on her, the Goddess granted Tara a magic mirror, into which she could see glimpses of the outside world.

In addition, she also declared that if Tara could find true love, the spell would reverse itself and Tara would become human once again. Tara had until her twenty-first birthday to accomplish this.

As time passed, Tara grew more depressed and began to lose all hope of becoming human.

After all, what person could ever learn to love a beast?

A couple of points--

First, "Beauty and the Beast" is not the property of Disney. It's a story by the 18th century French writer Catherine Leprince de Beaumont, and as such is in the public domain.

Second, the writing is very good, but I don't follow why Tara, who is so put upon in this rendition, should be transformed. Granted, there is the title of the story, but perhaps you might consider a version in which the "magic mirror" only appears to show her as monstrous, when in fact she really isn't! I think you can see where I'm heading with this.... ;-)

I hope that I am not being presumptuous in making this suggestion.....

Oh. I knew that. I just figured that, since I'm basing it more on the Disney movie than the original fairy tale, that it would be more appropriate to give credit there.

I think I do, and to be honest, and not to be rude, I didn't really want to go down that route. Back when I was thinking this out, I was of the opinion that, having seen one too many fics in which "Tara believes she's a demon", I thought it would be interesting to actually write a story in which she was one.

Not at all.

Hey there. I like the idea of a B&B W/T story. I actually considered it myself months ago but didn't want to do the descriptions. You've laid out the premise behind Tara's "imprisonment" in such a way that she's the victim rather than the cause of her punishment but I think you can still make it work. Has her transformation turned her into a beast in attitude because it seems to me that in the movie, that is part of the beast's issue. If so you will have some barriers to love (good) before making it all just easy and free.

This paragraph:
Tara often thought of her mother. She was a beautiful woman who had often sacrificed what she wanted in order to ensure that Tara had a less painful childhood. Tara was thankful for that, though she often wondered what her mother could have done if she didn’t act like such a burden.
Contains the word often three time in close succession which sounds awkward.

It seems like a good and tenable start.

Hi, Debra. I'm glad that you had a chance to look at this. I know I've never left any feedback for any of your stories (well, your non RKT-related stories, anyway), but I have read them, and I have printed them off. I really enjoy your writing, and was hoping I could get your input on this.

JustSkipIt wrote:You've laid out the premise behind Tara's "imprisonment" in such a way that she's the victim rather than the cause of her punishment but I think you can still make it work.

I'll be reworking the prologue to have it make more sense, but the underlying essence of the story is that the one who placed the entire castle under the spell felt badly for the way that Tara had been treated, and thus gave her an opportunity for things to return to normal. It may sound negative, but given that she just can't undo something of that magnitude, it's her only real option. (I haven't exactly worked out a way in which that makes sense, so that's something I'll have to focus on.) Tara, naturally, takes it as badly as you would imagine, basically sealing herself off from the outside world.

JustSkipIt wrote:Has her transformation turned her into a beast in attitude because it seems to me that in the movie, that is part of the beast's issue.

Not really. I can't really imagine Tara having all that much of an attitude. Any time I've really portray her as being either an action hero or brave, I've always had a streak of insecurity in her, always making her question whether or not what she is doing is the right thing to do. In this case, when Willow stumbles along the castle, it'll be up to the enchanted servants (other Buffy cast, naturally) to cater to her while Tara watches from afar.

And thanks for pointing out the awkwardness of that paragraph. I do have a bit of trouble with that sort of thing.

Yes, the writing is a little "cleaner" and clearer. :)

A couple of further suggestions--

You might want to see Jean Cocteau's wonderful film of "Beauty and the Beast" (1946), still considered the finest live-action version of a fairy tale ever made. It is closer to Leprince de Beaumont's original tale, and offers many details absent from the Disney version (one of my favorites: the beast's hands actually smoke every time he kills an animal in order to eat!).

Idea: it might be a nice touch to leave Tara's beautiful singing voice in place, so that during the part of the story when she is hiding from Willow's view and she feels terribly frightened and alone in the vast castle, Willow finds herself comforted by an ethereally sweet singing voice. What do you think?

I'll have to track it down. And just for clarity, I'm basing it around the Disney movie mostly because that's the only version of the tale I've seen. But like I said in the disclaimer, it's a lot more angsty and violent, so it's not a complete rip.

Here's another version I've just finished. I've basically looked at it once again, removed and reworded some sections and added in a mention of Hemiola's brilliant idea.

She was not allowed to participate in any of the royal events that took place every year, being forced to spend her time locked in her room while her father and mother made the token appearances and customary blessings. Her only comfort came in singing to herself, lamenting her situation and dreaming for an end to the nightmare that was her life.

Tara had spent a great deal of her time being with her mother. She had been a beautiful woman that had sacrificed much of what she wanted in order to ensure that Tara had a less painful childhood. Tara was ever thankful for that, though she wondered what her mother could have done if she didn’t act like such a burden.

Then had come the day when her mother had died under mysterious circumstances. And though Tara could never prove it, she always thought that her father was in some way responsible. Tara, meanwhile, withdrew into herself, closing out what little contact she did have with the others in the castle. The servants attempted to cheer her up as best they could and keep her from falling into despair. Taking pity on her, but realizing that her curse could not be undone so easily, the Goddess granted Tara a magic mirror, through which she could see glimpses of the outside world, which provided Tara some comfort, though did not entirely quell her depression. She was told further that, were she to find true love with her one and only, the spell would reverse itself and Tara would become human once again. Her final words were that Tara had until her twenty-first birthday to accomplish this.

As time passed, Tara grew to become more depressed than she had ever been when she was human and began to lose all hope of becoming normal once more.

After all, what person in the world could learn to love one such as her?
