question re: tough love

Postby mollyig » Thu May 17, 2001 8:11 am

Tough love just aired here in the european countries, and I was wondering where (I mean what room) Willow, Tara, Buffy and Dawn were at the end of the episode when Glory tears the wall down.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I only found this board the other day, and think its wonderful!

Thanks!

I wonder why she paints it black?

Okay since we're discussing that scene I was wondering how the heck all that stuff got packed up already? By the looks of it Willow must have been up all night packing. And just where was she planning on living with Tara anyway? And for that matter was she gonna drop out of school too? Cause I really don't think the professors would have allowed her to bring Tara with her to all her classes.
Sorry just some thoughts I had to get out.

Willow: We can come by between classes. Usually I use that time to copy over my class notes with a system of different colored pens, but it's been pointed out to me that that's, you know, insane.

Tara: I said "quirky".

Well they worked out a schedule to look after Dawn, so how about Willow was planning to Tara-sit with Buffy?

Now that came out a lot more lesbian than it sounded in my head...

LMAO!
Or maybe they just figured Dawn and Tara could look after each other.

There's an interview in The Watchers Guide with Carey Meyer, Production Designer, who speaks of how they came up with the look of Taras room I'll quote:

"I had a hint that Tara is going to be an important character with Wllow this season, or near the end of the season anyway. Joss didn't come right out and say what he wanted, but I knew that he had something in his mind, and it was an important character, and she had a specific look.

"So we didn't want just any old dorm room, which is easy to do. I knew that he, somewhere back in college, had been in somebody's room that he liked, and knowing that she's a witch and Willow's a witch and, you know, you're just dealing with the sort of astrological stuff. So we just developed that whole back wall of constellations, and then we put in the Christmas tree lights in the major axes, x-y-z axes, of the universe."

"So if you walk in there, you'll see that the Christmas tree lights create not so much a grid, but a box in three dimensions. So you're within a grid, or you're within a universe. The constellations are on a wall, and then, with chalk, she's been sketching in behind the constellations, which are raised off the walls. We put screws into the wall in the form of constellations and then tied metalic string between them and then put little glow-in-the-dark stars on some of the major stars in the constellations. Then on the wall behind, which is black-it's almost like a chalkboard-she took chalk and she's been drawing in the romantic symbol or the romantic sketch of what the constellations were."

"She's very much in her own world. She does'nt really associate with anybody very well at all. She's very shy. She's opening up to Willow, but obviously she's sort of been stuck in her room She's just completely in her own world. When Joss said he wanted it to be black, I thought I kind of knew where he was going, and so we created that, and he walked in and just laid on the bed and said, 'Ahh, this is exactly what I wanted.'

By the way, we we're talking in another thread about candid shots of Aly and Amber. The Watchers Guide has one that we forgot to mention. On page 324 is a picture of the girls with Joss that looks like it was taken around the time of the "dolls eye crystal" scene.

So the walls are painted black to represent the night sky...that's beautiful, and makes so much sense.

Tara sketching the constellations doesn't, though, since we know from "Listening to Fear" that they "never made sense to [her]" and that she made up her own.

If I recall from the shooting script of "Hush," Joss described Tara's room as "wicca-y" and also "painted black and depressed-y," which made me sad...thinking of Tara as being depressed, though it wouldn't surprise me at all if she were. So I was kind of surprised that her room this year was still black, considering all of the positive, wonderful changes in her life. Now I feel better about it. So thanks for posting that, Nouvelle.

No one said those were the REAL constellations on her wall though, and I don't think we'd get a good enough look to tell for sure. So maybe being that it's like she's in her own world she made up the constellations as well.

I agree. I can so see Tara sketching in the Big Pineapple and Moose Getting a Sponge Bath and Little Pile O' Crackers on her walls and ceiling.

btw, the Big Pineapple was translated in italian as... "Mambo Minor". Mambo Minor??? what the heck! i am very disappointed. the translators never once let me down so far and i'm really happy with the dubbing and all but...Mambo Minor?? give me back my Big Pineapple i say (well..this is sounding weirdly norty actually...) :/

(apparently it was a joke about dancing the mambo that some actor from the dubbing company threw in while they were working on that episode... so they stuck to it. still, i'm disappointed...)

But you know, Willow spent lots of time in Tara's room. Let's say they were...oh I dunno...lying on the bed together, basking in the afterglow of a particularly enthusiastic spell, just kind of talking about nothing and anything, like you do...which I'm sure happened many times. Willow never got around to noticing/asking about the weird stuff on the walls? Seems unlikely. And if it were the Big Pineapple, etc., then Will would have known about them long before the rooftop scene in LTF.

But that would have sucked, cuz then we wouldn't have had that scene. And I'll gladly put up with tiny continuity errors for the sake of Sweet Witchy Goodness™.

Well if that "spell" session was that good then I'm thinking the last thing on Willow's mind would have been the Big Pineapple!
Okay so what if Tara(who seems like a bookworm to me) had looked up the constellations in books and just did it from a star chart or something? Like she was recreating the solar system but she just copied it out of a book.

question re: tough love

Postby xita » Fri May 18, 2001 8:09 pm

Since people are discussing Tara's room, I thought I would share more from the Watcher's Guide.

And here's what David Koneff, Set Decorator on BtVS had to say about Tara's room:

WG2: "Tell me about Tara's bedroom.'

DK: "Joss gave me certain information about Tara's bedroom. He said the walls were black, and that she was a slight outcast, and I knew that she had witch ability. So I figured that maybe, like all people who feel as if they don't fit in, no matter how angry they are about not fitting in or not being a part of the regular group, and how much they dislike the regular group of people, they probably want to be a part of the regular group of people. So her room was black, but there were elements of her room that I thought maybe subconsciously told us that she wanted to be different than who she was, and blend in a little bit better with who she thought was supposed to be a regular crowd. Little did she know that'd she'd get in with a crowd that was far from regular."

WG2: "What are some of the touches?"

DK: "Someone commented to me about a month ago about the pictures of women in her room. I thought these two or three pictures of women were people that maybe she in some ways secretly aspired to. Artistically they were very pretty pictures, just pastoral scenes with a seminude Rubenesque woman. I thought it was just a pretty picture in a nice antique frame; and I thought that maybe she would find it a pleasing picture. But her room is very bohemian. It's a dorm room that she's completely taken over.

"It's the kind of room that I wouldn't mind having in my house as a getaway room. I thought it was a nice warm room. I didn't know if she was going to be a good character or bad character, but she's someone who I thought probably had a lot of things going on.,

Keep in mind both of these comments are about season 4.

Since Nouvelle mentioned it, here are pictures from the Watcher's Guide 2
