From http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/buffy/news/02011401.shtml:

quote:
Despite previous announcements to the contrary, Joss Whedon caused confusion recently by claiming in an interview that Sarah Michelle Gellar wouldn't be participating in the Buffy animated series after all.

"With the exception of Sarah, I believe that everyone is doing their own voices," he told the Guardian newspaper.

Not looking good...

j uk, just because smg isn't doing her voice why do you think it's not looking good? the actual production or the distribution of the cartoon?

it just means to me she's a very busy girl. she's on BtVS set more than any of the other actors (probably). and the cartoon will take up a lot of time for her to do dialogue since she'll be the main character and all. cartoon voice overs is actually a lot of hard work. well, my freidn does it and sometimes she'll read her lines over the phone but other times she's in the booth for hours.

Are any of the little pixies who are kind enough to bring joy to us non-americans by making new BtVS epis downloadable thinking about doing the same with the animated series? `Cause, that would really rule , although it would probably be a lot of work.

Grrr. No Argh, just.. grr.
The one thing that really rankles about this is how difficult it was for me to convince folks on some of the other boards about what a good idea this was, and that it could be done right, pointing and re-pointing to other 'toons that were not even on cable or primetime that were great and had gotten away with a TON of stuff; and I repeated myself until I was blue in the face. *sigh*
Anyhow.
But I believe I know how this all came about:
Fox is jettisoning ALL of it's toon programming, not just on Saturday morning, but weekday afternoons, and Fox Family Cable got bought out by Disney, so.. where to go?
UPN does'nt have SatAM or Weekday toon programming, Disney/ABC would want to mess with it too much, toon synication is currantly a dead issue, and the only other network besides ABC to have SatAM programming is.. The WB.
I hate to say it, but the only places it could concievably go now are Cartoon Network, or the SciFi Channel. Maybe premium cable, but I do'nt think Fox or Joss would want that..
I'm beginning to think that the actual Big Scooby Death might be Buffy: The Animated series.
Unless somebody else has any ideas for where it could go: Anyone?
Guy.
I need a hug.

Rane: The series has apparently 'stalled', and when it does go ahead it looks like Buffy and Angel will be voiced by different people. Plus, no Tara. That doesn't sound very promising to me. I just don't like the idea of watching it with someone doing a SMG or DB impression.

About the Willow being gay debate, I didn't think it made continutity sense at first, but I wrote this article which, I think, clears things up - basically it explains how Willow could have been gay, how she is gay and how she is not bixsexual.

As for the cartoon, I read somewhere that it's Joss' intention to make Willow gay but closeted, so there'll be little jokes about it (apparently like she'll order the 'tuna platter' for lunch ) I doubt it'll be ever said outright, though - sad as it is, cartoons are invariably less able to be open about things. But they can get away with obvious subtexts a lot more.

Last I heard all the voices were going to be done by the orignal actors except SMG! Doh! Personally I'd rather they had all the actors or none at all.

Edited to add
Personally I'm not very enthused about the whole thing - I don't like childrens cartoons very much and I'm not a huge fan of Season 1. I'd rather Joss just worked on Buffy the Non-animated Series!

------------------
Willow: I want something that's just, y' know, mine.
Tara: I am, you know.
Willow: What?
Tara: Yours.

What a shame. I think the Buffy animated series sounded like an interesting idea. Sounds like it's hitting a lot of roadblocks, though.

I enjoyed the 'crab' explanation you gave, Hugin. I've never quite gotten the big deal about the terminology and debate of gay/straight.... It's all about love. You dont think "Im a woman, and in ten minutes I will fall in love with a man. And oh, you are a man, so I love you." Or vice/versa. To me its all about the connection of souls. I fell in love in love with ~Liz because of who she is not what uh 'equipment' she may or may not have, if she'd been a guy I truly believe I still would have loved her (er..him?) and so would have been termed 'straight'. If you fall out of love, or the relationship doesnt work and say, a lesbian meets a man she can love..I dont think its a matter of 'changing', (ore being 'cured-i-want-the-boys' *G*), or even bi. Its just love. I think humans restrict themselves by not allowing themselves to retain openiness to love..but thats my opinion. (which i think i expressed in a most dizzing unclear way...lol sorry)

And sings the tune without words
And never stops at all.

Ok, can we get back to discussing the cartoon, cause I don't want it to go off topic! Thanks!

You know what I wish?
That they'd at least reveal the character designs for the show- I'm dieing to see what style they were aiming for;
Further, I would like to know who did those character desisns, as I've read conflicting comments in various interviews with these guys that yes, there *are* character designs, but no, there has *not* been a studio decided upon yet.
So how can you have character designs without a studio?
Did Joss contract a comic book artist for it?
Which reminds me, did you know that Bruce Timm, character designer for Batman the Animated series did a Buffy illustration?
It's here: http://www.popcultureshock.com/bt/viewer.php?id=1020
(let me know if this works).
I really love his work, but I'm a bit on the fence about this one.
Hmnn.

Once more with the
"um...boobs out of proportion, much?"
Not quite sassy eggs, more manic melons.
Why do illuatrators always feel the need to do that with their female characters?
