Hm, I guess I worded that wrong. What I meant is that middle names are actually very common in Germany. I know a couple of people there though that don't have one either.

Hmmmm I wonder how i can get abetter look at that id......I'll find a way hehehe.

I was wondering does anyone know what the name Katherine means?

Thanx for the help with Willows middle name, if she has one...its sort of thrown in the air you know. Joss had it down on paper once, but then they deleted it. So it makes you wonder if he just didnt like it and thought hed think of a new one, or it was too time consuming?

Well anyways on with the Hunt for taras middle name, did anyone try watching checkpoint yet?

This is from www.behindthename.com
KATHERINE (f) From the Greek name Aikaterine. The etymology is debated: it could derive from the earlier Greek name Hekaterine, which came from hekateros "each of the two"; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek aikia "torture"; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name". The Romans falsely derived it from Greek katharos "pure" and changed their spelling from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this. The name belonged to a 4th-century saint and martyr from Alexandria who was tortured on the famous Catherine wheel. This name was also borne by two empresses of Russia, including Catherine the Great, and by three of Henry VIII's wives.

The funny thing about middle names is that some people think them necessary and some don't. A friend of mine's father refused to give him a middle name, though the hospital insisted. They said they wouldn't allow the child to go home without one, so his father simply replied, "Fine. I can make another one." And started to walk away. Needless to say, my friend does not have a middle name.

Kind of an unusual name. There's hardly any except Warren Beatty and, you know, President Harding. It's probably not either of them.

Bubbles, just to keep this clear, I don't think they've ever assigned Cordelia a middle name. "Catherine" is as far as I know, just something CaptMurdock personally thought was pleasant and plausible.

I realize it's a small thing, but I just don't want this thread to become a source of speculation or things constructed for fanfics that people come to think are true. Unless someone can point to a canonical instance where it was stated, neither Willow or Cordelia have middle names.

If either of them do have middle names, we don't know them, and there no way (or much point) getting overly excited or worried about mapping thier names to any real Kitten's names.

How 'bout this for a dumb idea: can one of the mods write and/or e-mail Joss Whedon or Marti Noxon and ask if any of these characters has a middle name???

Surely, these two will know for certain!

Speculation: since Ira seems to be very devout, why not assume that Willow has a very Jewish middle name, such as "Naomi" or "Shayndel" ?

Well, I suppose someone (anyone) could do that if they wanted to Hemiola. I doubt being a mod would elicit a better response though.

Len, my bad. It was not my intention to deceive or confuse anybody. I just happened to bring that list up to generate lively discussion (e.g. "Yeah, Cordy's parents probably wanted the alliteration with her initials. Yech!") Perhaps this was inappropriate of me; if so, I apologize profusely.

No, it's not inappropriate. Just, as a thread gets longer and new people participate, I get worried that folks are missing the key point, i.e, the thread title question was answered in the first few posts, and then the thread became just fun speculation. And then next thing you know, it's on other boards, etc...Xita was relating to me the number of people she's run into who think Faith's real last name is Spencer, based on a fic.(Faith's last name has yet to be revealed)

I have to say reading this thread through, one of the interesting trends in terms of fanfiction is that authors often feel the need to fill in details that the show just glosses over... something as simple as a middle name in one sense, but that in a story can be an intricate necessity...

I myself have both a middle and a confirmation name... and often when writing our characters will have middle names etc outlined in our own heads even if we don't include them in the story... I wonder if that is what its like for Josh, in the sense he has a middle name for Willow, Tara etc but never felt the name to put it out there for common knowledge...

I mean could he have Faith's history/motivation in his head all this time without knowing what her last name is?

That's a good point, KathleenWolf.

I'm sure that Gene Roddenberry always knew that the "T" in James T. Kirk stood for "Tiberius", although I think that this was not actually confirmed until the movies started coming out (i.e. it was never revealed while the series was on the air ). I'd be willing to bet that JW has long and detailed backstories on ALL of the characters that we will never get to see .

Len--I have a strong suspicion that the "Buffy" team knows all about the Kitten Board and would indeed give respect to an inquiry from one of its moderators .

BTW, "Tara" in Thai means "earth" (land surface of the world...heh)... so she does spread beneath the "Willow Tree"

My middle name is a family name - my great grandmother was called Ethel Louisa, so I'm Hazel Louise. I don't like Louise, loads of people I know (and don't like!) are Louise. I like my first name now, I used to hate it - I got all the hazelnut jokes, but now people have given up on that and my nickname's Magpie - I like shiny things.

Aia (I made that up and I prefer it!)

I don't have a middle name either. In the Philippines (where my mother is from), generally a person's middle name is their mother's maiden name. Though, My last name is my mother's maiden name hyphenated with my father's last name (which has made for an extremely long last name for me - 16 characters long). But I do have a confirmation name. It's nice and simple, Joan.
