It's "Hiya Our Kid" Thursday MKF

Postby tommo » Thu Jul 25, 2002 1:33 am

The Commonwealth Games opens tonight. For those of you who aren't planning on watching the ceremony, I advise you to do so. I was lucky enough to see a rehearsal on Tuesday night and it's quite the sight to behold. In Manchester. In the rain. When you're not on a covered stand. Heh.

Anyway, the title of the thread relates to the supposed greeting offered by the volunteers working for the Games. It's one of those really nasal twangy slang things that "real" Mancunians say. Um, apparently.

And before you ask, I'm from Cheshire. Heh.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to two weeks of sports and bustling in the city centre. Manchester's a great city to be in at the moment and there's much going on. And what with 72 nations competing in almost as many venues (not really, heh) I was wondering how many members on the board are in the Commonwealth. Sorry that this excludes our American friends, but you guys kicked us out fair and square, so you don't get the opportunity to take part in this gig, and um, kick our ass like you generally do when it comes to sports. Heh.

Anyway, just thought I'd pop on and alert you all to the Games. Not that it's interesting for you if you don't care, which, I suspect, not many people do...but ho hum.

I won't be around for a while. I'm taking a break from stuff. But I wanted to grab the daily thread. :)

Cheers. People here have always been very good to me and that's what I remember. So thanks for that. Try not to miss me too much, or indeed, at all. ;)

Ah yes, how the Gallagher brothers greet everyone, before they box them. [img:4355d2403a]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/wink2.gif[/img:4355d2403a]

Ireland aren't in the commonwealth either, but if I get a chance I probably will watch some of it. Not tonight though, as I'm going boozing.

Ruth, you will be missed muchly. Take care.

Oh look, daily thread, here I come..

I got news yesterday.. and what can I say.. wahhh.

One of my best friends is giving his voice to dubb english speaking actors, he does that for a living. So yesterday I was watching a season 2 Angel episode and there was a cameo role, and I heard my friends voice. When I asked him if it was really him, he confirmed it. And then he said that at the moment he is speaking for the new Buffy season, which is season 6 here in Germany. And I got curious whom he is speaking.. and, oh my, of all people.. it's Andrew! Now I have to hear my friends voice when this little sucker speaks, as if the season wasn't bad enough already without this audio handicap.

And then he was teasing me about calling me in the middle of the night "Hey, Linda, yoohoo, it's me, Andreeheeww." Yuck!

And how he was telling me whom he is speaking. "Oh, they are the new evil guys, three of them, they are cool." I think I went wide eyed and speechless. Gotta beat some sense into my friend.

Ah yes Ruth, as an Australian, I am part of the commonwealth and shall probably be tuning into the opening ceremony, at whatever godforsaken time it airs (perhaps i'll just watch the replay.) Much jolly sporting action to be had, with Australians actually having a chance of winning something outside of the pool.

I recall a few years ago, when Australia had the referendum to decide whether or not we should become a republic (unfortunately we voted not to, due to John Howard and his sneaky sneaky sneaky ways), a friend of mine was going to vote "No" because she didn't want to be excluded from the Commonwealth games. An Australian Head of State was obviously a much lower priority. Lol. Sorry, what a silly little rant. I just can't believe that in my opinion (I'm rather biased), is the most wonderful place to live, we're not a republic yet.

Anyway, good luck all you Aussies over there in the grey country. Run! Swim! Throw Stuff! Be merry! Make friends with Canadians! They're nice :grin

Have a good day everyone :D

Geez, you'd think a bint would explain to some of us bloody colonials what the frilly heck the Commonwealth Games [i:43318a7db9] are.[/i:43318a7db9]

Or am I, as so often is the case, the only one ignorant of that? :lol

It's sports, then? 'Cause, yanno, I'm not so good with the *makes mimed motion of swinging a baseball bat that in actuality more closely resembles axe-murdering someone*

Ruth, forgive the slightly OT post here (plus, I'm American, so I guess I shouldn't be in this thread at all), but....from what I can see, you are one of the people who are the life of this board, and I hope that your time away gives you what you need and that you come back soon.

Canadian Commonwealth-er here. For some reason, I don't usually catch these Games, I just sorta save up for the Olympics.

Which is too bad, 'cuz we tend to do better with less competition... maybe I should catch some of them this year. I'll see...

[b:8ed248a0ad] Julia[/b:8ed248a0ad], the Commonwealth Games are a kind of junior Olympics.

It's a chance for people of other nationalities than you horribly over-achieving Americans to actually win something ;)

Okay, so they're not competing against the best, but, hell, when you're English, you take what you can get.

Apparently it's the biggest sporting event ever to be staged in Britain.

So that's kind of exciting.

[b:8ed248a0ad] Ruth[/b:8ed248a0ad], I don't think there's much chance of people not missing you. And we should try not to miss you too much? Nah. I think I'll give up before I start. Exercise in futility :)

Hi Kalita! Here's hoping Canadian wrestler Daniel Igali has some good matches (he won gold at the Sydney Olympics).

Just finished an interview for another position at work - as a web author. Of the 23 people who initially applied, 12 went on to take a writing/html test and 6 got interviews. Crossing my fingers.

Have a good day, everybody!

Hi, kitties. I hope that everyone is having a better day than I am. *sigh*

The theatre that I have been working for the past five years has decided that I don't get to direct this year. The sad thing is, the show is one that I (and I alone) have been advocating the theatre do for two years and they decided to do it this year. Then they give it to someone else. Plus, they didn't even have the decency to call me and tell me.... they emailed me. *sigh*

So, I decided for my peace of mind to sever my ties with the theatre. I am the webmaster and I have spent many hours building that site from scratch. I have decided to replace it with a plain page (the one I have built has built in frames and everything) because I don't want someone else to have all my hard work. (I did this all volunteer and have spent 10 hours + a month keeping it updated for four years) Is this petty of me? Right now I am too upset to be rational. *bitter laugh*

Now I have to try and concentrate on work. :( I hope you guys have a good day.

To further on explanations of what the Commonwealth games are, they are similar to the Olympics in that they are a multi-event championships but it's only open to current members of the British Commonwealth. They're called the goodwill games because they're actually unimportant in regards to ranking in individual sports due to the limitations on the amount of nations that can compete. They are an excuse for various parts of the commonwealth to beat one another and then mock. Also it makes the British Monarchy look important and have Australia and England look good by beating such sporting giants as Anguilla and Lesotho.

In the inevitable way that the USA win the most events at major sporting events it is Australia's turn to be the most disliked country in the competition by kicking everyone's ass. However this year there will be Americans at the event as they have decided to bring in neutral judges to prevent such heated debates over carpet bowls as have marred the event in the past. (If we had one, there'd be a sarcasm font here.)

In the opening ceremony they just said that Manchester gives a unique welcome. Phhht, I can get mugged just as easily in Liverpool. ;)

Ruth - you will be missed both here and in pens. No smut! :cry And I personally will miss the ass-kicking I would have gotten for that Manchester dig. ;)

Life Update:

After 29 years of feets and buses and subways and bicycles and kindly friends, I have persuaded the state of Massachusetts to allow me to practice flinging large, internally combusting objects about on thier roads.

No please, dig away. Manchester is a grim city. This I know. Manchester has some of the worst crimes in the UK. Yep, this I know as well.

However, tonight's opening ceremony made me proud to be a part of the Commonwealth Games. It made me proud to be English/British; it also made me proud to be involved in the "friendly games", which, having worked in them so far, they truly embody.

And you know what? I'm not really a proper Mancunian. But tonight made me wish that I was. And hey, when Manchester gets the Olympics, all you naysayers will be laughing on t'other side of your southern jessie faces. ;)

And I'm pretty much done. :)

Love the kitten board. Love the kittens. Top one. Nice one. Sorted. Heh.

Yes, I've survived! They spent another four hours today selecting people, questioning them and booting them off before all the lawyers finally agreed on a jury.

Surprisingly, I'm kind of disappointed. I was hoping I'd at least get the chance to answer some questions and be booted off. But it was not to be.

Back to the writing life now... :)

I'm Malaysia... and apparently... we are only known for...badminton. I'll support them there... oh and squash, i guess I'll have to support the country there as well.

I'll support Australia in swimming though. Always been a major fan of Australian Swim Team. ;)

Yesterday I watched the Men's Diving Semi final for the 1st group... I didn't really pay attention which catergory but Canadian took 1st and 3rd placing. Australia sandwiched in the middle. But damn! That 1st placer was really good!

I support Australia too, as I live here, but what do all you [i:8fca2c9756] Kittens[/i:8fca2c9756] think about that Aussie Shooter that tested positive to the masking agent?

Is it a big uproar over there and around the world as they saying it is here? I think they should ban / fine him. We are ment to have a Zero Tolerance and then the officals turn around and tell him he can compete. Anyway, that's my opinion.
