It's Too Bad Tuesday, MKF

Postby maudmac » Tue Jul 09, 2002 11:18 am

I was really fortunate, I had a lesbian icon in real life. My godmother is a lesbian and she was a constant presence in my childhood and early adolescence. (I was raised by my mother, Dad was off having a life with his "real" family. :rolleyes ) I spent enormous amounts of time with her and her friends, being exposed to militant dykes, flaming queens, and everything in between. My mother was somewhat removed from all of that, but she trusted my godmother enough to let her be something of a co-parent to me. (And you probably wouldn't be wrong if you saw some subtext there.)

So I knew about Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin before I even really understood how important they were/are. Talk about lesbian icons.

And, though she wasn't famous, Ruth Ellis deserves icon status. She was an amazing woman on so many levels and her life story absolutely takes my breath away.

In other news:

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Heart in concert. Whoa. Ann Wilson's voice is a national treasure. You can [i:af088a7ecd] feel[/i:af088a7ecd] it in your [i:af088a7ecd] guts[/i:af088a7ecd] when she really gets going. After they finished "Mistral Wind," you could have knocked me over with a feather. Truly unbelievably amazing.

I think I need to learn some synonyms for "amazing." :shy

Hope everyone is having a happy Tuesday.

Oooh, I saw Heart and Kansas in concert together once and the girls were awesome! 'Crazy on You' has always been one of my all-time favorite songs. Great live performers! :)

I must be the world's worst lesbian....ever. I've never even heard of half of these people other than the usual suspects. Methinks I need to do some research this summer. ;)

Oh...I read somewhere that there's a new series being made in which [b:b8f3e7873a] Dawn French[/b:b8f3e7873a] will play a lesbian.

Ah, be still my beating crotch. ;)

I'm big with the Dawn French love. As you know. :)

Well, I'm from Atlanta, so my I can't not say Indigo Girls and, of course, they have always been very important to me. Ever since waaaay back in 1987 when I got kicked out of the Little 5 Points Pub for repeatedly trying to take a seats in the front row that all their friends occupied. Seeing them live has always been one of the most comforting and life-affirming experiences in the world. There's nothing quite like singing "Prince Of Darkness" at the top of your lungs with thousands of your closest friends and hearing everyone get the "Yeah, but I tell you" part exactly right every single time. Sigh.

Also, Ellen. I used to drive down to My Sister's Room (when it was in Midtown) every Wednesday night to watch the show with family. It felt so good. All of us there for the same reason, laughing at the same lines. That's why I was so completely stunned when the show was cancelled for "not being funny anymore". To me, it finally GOT funny because she was allowed to tell the truth.

And finally, I have to say Jodie Foster. She's my hero, period. The fact that she's family only makes it that much sweeter. :-)

That Willow and Tara also fit into this category for me kinda goes without saying cuz, I mean, I'm here, right?

Oh yes Maudmac, Ruth Ellis was quite an icon here in Detroit. I was fortunate to run into her many times at community events here and she was always fascinating to talk to. She was like a walking history archive and she is definitely missed.

I want to echo Ruth Ellis. She is an amazing woman. Who has led an amazing life and an inspiration to this lesbian of color.

And a word about Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin. I have been aware of them since before I was 18 years old. It's a disappointment to me when I hear young women today, young lesbians, don't know who The Daughters of Bilitis were or what The Ladder was. I think not knowing the struggles that have gone before, hinders us in facing the challenges that still faces us. I am embarrassed that for this thread I chose to go with a celebrity. I take it back and say these women you mentioned Maudmac, top my list.

On a personal note, I went to UC Berkeley and I stayed in the all female dorm there (stern hall) hee. One of the pleasures of walking around there was a beautiful mural in the main hall that was painted by Diego Rivera. Next to it was a picture of him and Frida Kahlo. It always gave me a thrill to stand there where she had stood. But also, Phyllis Lyon had lived in that dorm before she moved out to live with Del Martin. And it was such an inspiration to me as a baby closeted dyke, to walk the halls that they did, picturing an illicit lesbian affair, hee. It gave me courage to be who I am.

I love Jodi Foster, but wouldn't she have to own up to being gay first?

i'd like to think that she's just shy...and not yet ready to come out... but if she really ain't gay and she cannot be my gay icon... heck! there's always Ruth... ;)

Well if you wanted to wait a year before posting in this or any other thread than that would be perfectly ok.

You are welcome, as long as a thread stays open people can post in them and [b:1f71ba3cf7] no one[/b:1f71ba3cf7] here gets to criticize or mock another poster for doing so.
