I just don't understand the attitude of people saying that Buffy has become too adult - the characters have grown, its only natural that the storylines portray this.

This is not an animated cartoon like the simpsons where Bart is forever 9 (or whatever age he is).

Seriously, although I read this stuff all the time, it still makes me sick. Yeah, I can't believe that I stood and watched while "homosexual undercurrents manifested between Willow and a fellow Wicca practitioner", without taking a stand. God forbid. Also, if you haven't already, check out the ratings for Dawson's Creek, Will and Grace, and Popular.

Somehow, 'Dark Angel', 'Once and Again' and 'ER' slipped past their watchful, oh-so-intelligent homosexuality radar (not to be confused with the funner, more useful gaydar). The synopses are outdated.

*Providence* got a yellow light. PROVIDENCE! What's on that show that could possibly be offensive? It seems like they missed the gay character there too. Also, since when is that family on 7th Heaven functional? I don't think it's possible for a family to exist like that. I'm a freaking Social Work major, and I don't think a family like that is healthy.

Oh c'mon. Surely this can't be surprising. This is just a conservative group with a clear agenda. Here's a quote from their site. [quote:3660d0b6bb][b:3660d0b6bb][i:3660d0b6bb]Quote:[/i:3660d0b6bb][/b:3660d0b6bb]
The gratuitous sex, foul language, and violence on TV (along with stories and dialogue that create disdain for authority figures, patriotism, and religion) are having a negative effect on children.
[/quote:3660d0b6bb]I think that says everything in a nutshell. Ignore them. They aren't changing anything.

The silly thing here is, if these 'concerned parents' don't want their kids watching the show, then [b:ef745a6934] don't let them watch[/b:ef745a6934].

Being such concerned parents, I'm sure they're around to monitor what their kids are watching and being a proper guiding influence... right? ;)

Paging Tipper, Tipper Gore. Paging Pat Buchanan...

What a big, stinkin' load of horse dung! It's frightening, really, to read that people STILL have this mentality and that they have some influence over what people watch. All I know is that when I have children, I'm keeping them away from these people. They're just plain scary. I wouldn't want that kind of influence on my little ones. Yuck.

Buffy is up from 4 to 3 on their "Top Ten Worst" list!
They don't have a single show on their "Best" that I would even consider watching.

So hey!

Idiots will always be out there, it is a sad fact of life.

Email them and thank very nicely them for the list of advertisers saying that now with this list you plan to buy only these products and let the companies that make them know that you bought their products because they advertise on Buffy.

They hate that.

They want these shows off the air why? because they're raunchy or because they don't want their kids to see them? Ok, if it's the latter, why don't they just monitor what their kids watch? Why do they have to ruin the fun for everyone by trying to get sponsers to pull out?

you know what, fuck these fucking dildo heads(see! i am a product of raunchy tv! the mouth on that girl! like a truckdriver!) shit like this pisses me off, if you don't like something then don't watch it, tell your other pure minded friends not to watch it either, just don't ruin the fun for everyone because you want to impose your values on the rest of the world.

The thing is, they won't stop [b:f9ec1fc7de] me[/b:f9ec1fc7de] watching it, and they won't stop [b:f9ec1fc7de] you[/b:f9ec1fc7de] watching it, so I don't see the harm. I find this thing rather amusing, that parents have the time to stop looking after their children and start watching so much television. Hmm.

Anyway, it's a step closer to No.1. And you know, if Buffy is the worst show on television, doesn't that kind of make you wonder what programmes these people [b:f9ec1fc7de] aren't[/b:f9ec1fc7de] watching?

Not meaning to be a bit priggish or anything. But isnt this a common misconception about the show i.e. that its a kids show and to an extent isnt the content a little too. How can I put it Adult.. to be viewed openly by all kids

(I know that I receive flak for being 30 and raving about what many regard as a kids program and have spent many an hour being wound up whilst justifying my enjoyment)

In the UK on the BBC they show an uncut version late at night and a family cut version at around 6ish Which is effective. The dvds are given a 12 & 15 cert which in my mind is a reasonable age limit, to allow me to enjoy a program which does contain acceptable (and happy) sex, violence & supernatural storylines..

As long as people dont actually pay attention to what is and isnt intended for certain age groups this sorta thing will continue to happen..

Not that I support what is being said about one of the few shows that I actually watch, enjoy and dont find offensive to me as an adult but mebbe the marketing should be more squarely aimed at its target audience

(just as a further and final aside The day after the Spike scene which is mentioned at the above link, aired the general consensus at work was that it was Very rude (which admittedly was seen to be a good thing. We are all programmers & IT bods) And it was discussed as to how it could come across as so explicit when clearly there was only one actor in the scene)

Postby revisionJohanna » Thu Apr 04, 2002 11:33 am

Actually, I found the site very informative and enlightening. I think that I was probably "seduced" by the attractive, yet decadent lifestyles portrayed in the shows that are the "worst". [1]

Though I am old enough to vote, drink, join the Armed Forces, and even rent a car in my own name, I'm pleased that there are "watchdog" organizations like this one that can guide me to television that is "better" for me.
Before I found out that "Touched by an Angel" [2] and "Seventh Heaven" were amoung the "Best" shows on, I thought they were insipid and frightening, as well as calculating and nauseating. Now, I think I will watch them, and them alone, because it is clearly better for my own self, as well as the moral fiber of America.

Before, I was striving to model my life after the character of Willow, who was a smart, academically gifted young woman who had chosen to work with Buffy to fight to keep the world from being overrun by evil. Now I realize that despite the fact that Willow has often acted as the spiritual center of the show; she is a homosexual, and thus can not be a role model.

To display my disapproval, I am going to boycott the sponsors of the "worst" shows, and I urge you all to do the same. A quick glance at the "advertising" page tells us all we need to know. Sony, Viacom, and Capcom will see no more of my money!

Since the US. Government is listed as #8 on the offending advertisers, I have no choice but to register my disappointment by failing to file my income tax this year. I will continue to do this until the US Government only advertises on wholesome, family-centric television shows.

I realize that the United States, and perhaps the rest of the planet Earth, may not share my new-found Protestant Family Values. As many as three, or maybe even four hundred individuals may wish to dissent from these opinions. They are probably Catholics, or Anglicans, and thus have odd ideas.

Fortunately, I'm sure that everyone can agree on at least the fundamentals of what is right and wrong, and that the fine, fine folks at parentstv surely, surely know what is best for myself, my children, and yours as well.

[1] Except the wrestling one. That one is probably in the "worst" side just because it is awful, rather than any moral judgement.

[2] In figurative, metaphorical, non-sexual ways. I was deeply disappointed when I found this out.

I'm very pleased to report that I flamed these idiots. I did so because a) frankly, it made me feel better, but more importantly, b) because if you don't voice your strong disagreement with intolerance, then they sit there thinking they're completely right. At least this way, they have to deal with the lack of agreement. I also don't have any problem with my intolerance of their intolerance. Your milage may varry.

At any rate, this is what I sent them.

bzengo

You people are just fucking morons.

There is only one show on you're top ten I'd even consider watching, and I watch 7 of 10 on your worst list. So do my children, and they're all straight A atheletes, non-drug using kids. They just don't kiss my ass to avoid being told they're wrong for having throughts which differ from mine.

Thank God your children are unlikely to grow up as bigoted, homophobic, scared of sex, and patriarchial as you are.

Do you really think God loves your bigoted asses more than others?

Grow up and get a life.

I'm not really worried that these people are actually going to succeed in getting the show off the air. They irk me in the way mosquitos irk me, sure, it's just a little pinch, but it's annoying as hell.

I'm actually worried about the kids...what's going to happen if some of these parents' children realize they're gay? There's no advertisers to boycott that will change that, will they throw their kids out? in many cases it's probably likely. So while part of me wants to laugh at these people, another part of me is very sad for the children who grow up with such bigoted parents. It just makes me sad about the future of the world.0

Okay, here's what I wrote (a bit tame in comparison to Bzengo's but what the hell....) quote:
Thanks for letting me know the advertisers on "BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER" ! From now on I shall try and get ONLY THEIR PRODUCTS because BUFFY ROCKS and you, well, frankly, you don't........ Join the 21st century why doncha!?! If you don't wanna watch a show then don't but give others the freedom (if that exists in your little world) to watch what they want. Oh, and children are smarter than you apparantly think, give 'em some credit, ok?

[/quote:03f6558c3e]

I don't think it's a priggish attitude. I mean, I'm not sure Joss ever intended Buffy to be aimed at children. Certainly, in my opinion, it's a more thought provoking show than most others. I don't even consider the violence or sexual nature of it, because to me, that's secondary to the actual progression of character or plotline. I mean, generally, I tend to take the show as a metaphor anyway, and I suppose that's why I always had such a fondness for the seasons based in high school. That seemed very real to me, in one way.

I think perhaps that's what these people are missing. They're taking the show on face value, and that's never a good thing to do with anything. Because if something is good enough, it's what's underneath it that really counts.

Eh...[i:03f6558c3e] *shrugs*[/i:03f6558c3e]...I suppose I just don't have the time or patience to write to these people and expect them to understand a more cerebral appreciation. They're always going to think what they want anyway. And good luck to them; living in their little cosy bubble part of the world. Whatever, you know? They scream and shout and protest, but in the end, the show still gets made. I still watch it. I still enjoy it. Bleh.

PTC against Buffy- Says Sex, Witches and Violence bad

Postby Salem » Thu Apr 04, 2002 3:30 pm

ok, I just read through the their sypnosis for Buffy, and took out some excerts for your entertainment:

[i:07a66c8bb6]This season her younger sister, Dawn, who is also a slayer, will join Buffy.[/i:07a66c8bb6]

I'm sorry, did I miss something there, have I been watching another Buffy?!? Since when is Dawn a vampire slayer... last I heard, she was/is a key!

[i:07a66c8bb6]Just last season, sex was either shown or implied between Buffy and Parker, Buffy and Riley, Xander and Anya, Spike and Harmony, and Oz and Veruca. In addition, homosexual undercurrents manifested between Willow and a fellow Wicca practitioner.[/i:07a66c8bb6]

Good god, people are actually having sex?!?! The horror's! I mean NOBODY has sex, it just doesn't happen, I mean we were all hatched from eggs... no one had sex, we just appeared!

[i:07a66c8bb6]In another, Buffy issued this warning to Spike: I could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up. Ive got muscles youre never even dreamed of. I could squeeze you until you popped like warm champagne and youd beg me to hurt you just a little more.[/i:07a66c8bb6]

Well this was actually Faith in Buffy (oh the thoughts!) and everyone knew that Faith was way more sexually explicit in using her words than anyone else on the show, but then I don't expect them to know this considering they don't actually watch the show, they just take it at face value... I mean granted the show is called "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", but these people are jusr talking out of their arses!

[i:07a66c8bb6]Other episodes have contained implied nudity, homosexual fantasies, masturbation, anatomical references, and references to orgasms and kinky sexual practices.[/i:07a66c8bb6]

When has there been implied homosexual fantasies (seriously I wanna know... cause I wanna watch it again ;)) And omg, the show is teaching us biology! Please, I knew all about sex before Buffy came out... either from school or from my mum (she's very cool!)

[i:07a66c8bb6]Offensive language has included "bitch bastard, hell, damn, ass, and piss. Violence on Buffy the Vampire Slayer is not only frequent, but also very graphic. Buffys encounters with demons and other creatures often end in bloodshed.[/i:07a66c8bb6]

So the don't expect violence? HELLO!? earth to close minded freaks! They are seriously expecting Buffy to have a fight with this demon and then be like "Wow, that was a good fight... so you are gonna stop trying to take over the world now?" and then the demon to stop his plans for Armaggedon, and get a job at a fast food joint?! Yea, I can imagine being served in MacDonalds by a Chaos demon! And these guys are honestly telling me that they have NEVER swore in their entire existence?! Not even the odd "Bloody hell" or "Piss off"?! That's b/s! And I want to now apologise for my ramble, but people like this really grate my cheese! again sorry for the rant! I will now go and look for that 'homosexual fantasy' scene ;) luv Salem xxx
