It's Uncool Thursday MKF 10/10/02

Postby Tulipp » Thu Oct 10, 2002 1:16 am

Well, we all like to think we are cool, right? But we are probably not all cool. At least not all the time. Some of us have something...a hobby, a habit, a what have you...that compromises the cool factor a little bit.

For example, I like to think of myself as Cool, but in fact, I am 30 years old and I still have a sticker collection. And when the six-year-old down the street used to come over to color with me, I wouldn't always share my stickers with her.

I refused to share stickers with a six year old, and that is just not cool.

And my gf is a closet Dawson's Creek nut, and THAT is just not cool.

So....what makes you slightly less cool?

And, of course--and this could be fun--what would Tara and Willow do that would make them slightly less cool?

Have a good Thursday, everyone, and do the things that make you not cool.

OK, it's time to come out about my uncoolness.

My sister and I, when we were little, used to be addicted to Sweet Valley High (we were like 9... :blush now we're 16 and 18). Anyway it 'hurt' too much to chuck them out :lol so we kept them all in this box, stored away. Whenever we're really stressed, with exams or work, and need to let our brains melt into mush, we take out a couple of the books and read them. Our friends and parents are very concerned when they see us reading (and unable to put down) something with a title like "The Girl they both loved".

*ashamed look* Don't judge me! I'm only human...and really, really pathetic :p

Oh, Willow and Tara...hmmm Tara probably collects marbles or something, "hey, Will, check out the pretty milky colors!" and keeps them in a box under her bed. Willow probably has a collection of T-shirts with really weird/quirky slogans and designs. Like the one in [i:be5e9bda57] The Body[/i:be5e9bda57].

Hehe btw, Tulipp, loved what you said about the sticker collection :grin

I'm almost afraid to admit to this, but I collect stickers too! On the plus side I'm not a 30 year old sticker collector - well, not until next January anyway! [img:f19b1c650b]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/winkgreen.gif[/img:f19b1c650b]

My niece, who is 10, buys stickers for me out of her pocket money. She's so sweet. I don't actually have sticker album thingies, I'm making a mural on my door of stickers, so that's probably not so bad, right?

Penguin obsession is probably another reason to deduct cool points from me - my desk in work has about 30 penguins on it, which causes my co-workers to laugh at me and call me sad.

I'm sure there are many many more reasons why I'm not cool. But it doesn't bother me in the slightest!

What makes me uncool?

I'm 20, and every time I go to the store with somebody and they pick something out, a can of peas, a teddy bear, or some type of fruit or whatever, and if they change their mind and want to put it back or get a different one, I won't let them. Why? Because I feel like the object in question is happy you chose it and it'll be all sad if you put it back.

Hi all.

I think what totally ruins my coolness is the fact that I have 3 or so Warhammer 40k armies... :/ Lotsa Marines, lotsa Guard, and a long-term heavy reconstruction/painting project, Sisters of Battle... some people really give me this look when they hear it (it would be bad anyway, but being a girl playing this is just too much for them, I think). ;)
Well, it's a whole lot anyways.

And the fact that my brother addicted me to video gaming when I was eleven doesn't help either.

But I think I make some of that up with my favorite music... ;)

Hm... and Willow and Tara... hm. I always thought tose two were beyond the point where coolness matters. Well, OK, Willow probably was not, but I do think they are far beyond cool... you know... more like goddesses, so they _can_ have strange hobbies... nobody would mind it, they're worshipped anyway.

Stuff that's uncool about me:

I do pen and paper roleplaying, I play computer games, I attend Star Trek / SciFi conventions and I hate discoes (which could be related to the fact that I love to talk.) Should be enough :grin

And I'm obviously not exactly bright:
I met a former teacher of me today. I heard someone say "Hello!", looked up, saw her and it took me about 1 milisecond to realize that I have (and have had for a long time) a huge crush on her. OK, then why exactly did it take me so long to get a clue :confused

This is a good topic :)

Some would say that the fact that I smoke is uncool. For others, the fact that I obsessively tape 'Buffy' is uncool . I also have this weird thing for the "Animal Planet"--though, thankfully, it has gotten me through many a boring Wednesday. Most of my 'hobbies' are tied to interests in politics and activism--so, again, to those outside of my circle probably think I'm uncool.

The sheer fact that I come to the Kitten makes up for all of that ;)

Add going through stuff you haven't touched since moving 2.5 years ago and finding a money box with DM to my uncool list. With me being Ms "can't wait till we have the Euro" :blush

And apparently someone had decided to just save 1 and 2 Pfennig-pieces (really small stuff). But lots of those. Well, they say they take [b:6e5d224cee] anything[/b:6e5d224cee] with no time limit and no costs to change it to Euro, so I'm just going to test them :p

I was teaching my class on the American West, and a student brought in a video clip from Little House on the Prairie. I remembered vividly being seven years old and desperately wanting Michael Landon to be my daddy. But the really sad part? I still do.

I tried to convey the appeal of Little House to my frightfully young students. But they know the truth. Uncool.

Cool is being who you are no matter what others think. So, even if we collect stickers, 40K armies (I used to do space-orks myself) or whatever, we all can be totally cool. :) At the moment I'm watching a live Chess match over the internet, coolness be damned. :)

Hey! Animal Planet is cool! And so is Iron Chef. Dammit. And so is piling onto the sofa with your mother and 12 year old brother during the height of your college years on a Friday night, so you can [i:c13d277c21] watch[/i:c13d277c21] Iron Chef.

Hee.

I'm woefully uncool. I have chronic foot-in-mouth disease, compounded by unthinkingly-making-really-pervie-sexy-type-comments-loudly-in-public-and-embarassing-my-girlfriend-itis, (aka TMI disorder) as well as saying-things-that-make-not-so-much-sense-but-I-think-are-funny-opathy.

I like horrendously cheesy, badly scripted and acted kids' movies, especially if they have animals in them. Actually, that goes for other genres of movies, too. For instance, if I happen to notice that "UHF" is on TV, I'll drop whatever I happen to be doing at the time just so I can cackle over the ninja-fish-game-show scene. "Youuuu soooo STUUUPIDDD!" That movie just came out on DVD- I saw it at Fry's a few weeks ago. And squealed. Loudly, in excitement.

And I'm terrified of Anne Geddes prints. I refer to her as Scary Baby Lady, and seriously jump out of my skin if I pass her work in shops or anything.

Not to mention the fact that I spend hours rewriting episodes of really bad TV not using the actual badly written TV characters, but instead, using as characters people from a message board that I check fanatically all day long. ;)

I think there are many things that are uncool about me, but the one thing that springs to my mind right now is my obsession with Disney movies and everything other related to Disney (especially Donald Duck, I [b:f0e60e9adf] love[/b:f0e60e9adf] him) My best friend and I watched "The Lion King" last week (favorite Disney movie, Simba is just so cute when he's little) and we actually cried when his father died :( it's embarrassing but we were really depressed that day anyway. Oh, yes, and my (former) obsession with taping Buffy.

:love & :peace to you all

Uncool:
not only do I watch iron chef fanatically, but two years ago, when I was still in college, my housemates and I put on our own Iron Chef competition, with secret ingredient (bananas) and everything. I was one chef, my best friend the other. He won by one point.
I have a keychain collection that is hanging on my wall. 150 or so keychains and counting.
Some people may think the fact I'm a self-proclaimed pothead is uncool.
I'm a juggler.
I like to learn grammar of foreign languages.
I'm going to be late to class because I'm posting on a message board ;)

But, it's our uncoolness that makes us cool! Right? right?!

Postby oneyedchicklet » Thu Oct 10, 2002 4:10 am

Hey Everyone,
Ok, I don't know if it is considered uncool or not but I seem to have this obsession. At least my friends seem to think I'm obsessed. I am 37 years old and I love Mickey Mouse. It is safe to say that I am Mickey's biggest fan. You name it...I most likely have it in Mickey Mouse. See now my friends and family say I'm obsessed but they are the biggest contributors to the collection. But I do have tatoo of him on my ankle. As far back as I can remember, I have loved him.

I also have a very large collection of Beanie Babies. Most of them I have tucked away and I gave quite a few away.

But I think the thing that makes me the most uncool is the fact that I still sleep with a teddy bear that I've had for the last 35 years. Of course he is a little ragged now and missing an ear but he gets a bath every other week to keep him smelling good. I don't think I could ever give him up. He even goes on vacations with me. So if sleeping with him makes me uncool, then so be it.

And by the way...I'm a closet Family Affair (original series) fan. I desperately wanted an Uncle Bill and Mr. French.

Love to All,
Barb

Okay, I'm in a co-ed fraternity and according to my brothers and sisters my Buffy obsession is definately uncool. I disagree, of course. But I think the fact that I watch Enterprise is uncool (what can I say, T'Pol is hot). I'm also a HUGE 80's music fan. I'm always blasting the old hits out of my dorm room.

As for Willow and Tara I'd have to say Willow's high school wardrobe was DEFINATELY uncool but I think she's a pretty cool chick now. And Tara? How about her wacky sense of humor that only Willow gets? I think it's cute but I'm sure plenty of people would say it's uncool.

Gotta say, Dumbsaint and LeBuffster and all Animal Planet fans...I'm right with you on the animal movies.

There's that movie, Homeward Bound or something, about the two dogs and a cat, and near the end, you think the golden retriever has been injured, and the others are approaching home, kind of loping over the meadow...and there's this pause...no golden retriever, no golden retriever...and the music swells sadly, and still no golden retriever, no golden retriever....

and then....he springs into view, golden fur swaying in the breeze as he limps toward home!

He's alive! He made it!

I sob like a baby every time I see that.

[i:775aaaafa0] Pretends she doesn't whimper and whisper "Get up, Shadow, get up!" during that scene in Homeward Bound.[/i:775aaaafa0]

:cool

p.s. Diane, yes, Lion King the musical was freaking amazing. It's playing in LA until the end of the year, and then going somewhere else. I'm not sure where. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. The staging and costumes are just mind-blowingly cool. Julie Taymor (sp?) designed the whole thing. She's the one who made that really visually stunning film version of Titus a while back. She's done other stuff, too, but that's the one that always sticks out in my mind. But yeah- if you can, go see it. The music is awesome, too, and includes a couple of songs that were written for the movie but didn't make the final cut. And the chick who plays Rafiki is just- I wanted to take her home with me and have Rafiki 24/7. Hee. So love him.

Would you consider keeping my baseball card collection up-to-date and collecting G I Joes uncool? If so, then I plead guilty. By the way, Tulip, I still collect stickers too and I dont like to share them unless I have doubles.

As for Willow, I think she may have a stamp collection squirreled away somewhere. And Tara might have posters of obscure musicians accumulated in the basement.

Homeward Bound I still cry at that movie but I'm going with sensitive over uncool. I don't even cry over the beginning of that movie when the boy has to leave his dog behind. Of course that may be unbalanced by the fact that I cry at the end of some disney movies.

I donate money to a horse charity, that rescues neglected horses and cry when they send me the pictures.

Oh and the Lion King musical is brilliant, take tissues.

Well gee, I thought I was the epitome of cool and then you all go ahead and list a whole load of things I love, then tell me they're uncool.

I thought I read it wrong. There I was thinking "Mm hmm, I like Dawson's Creek. Score one for the English chick on the coolness charts. Stickers? Check. Especially football ones and my old Disney Panini collections. Weepy animal movies? Hell yes."

Then I realised how wrong I was. Dammit. I think I need to practice a little harder on this whole coolness factor.

But seriously, who wants to be stereotypically cool anyhow? You wanna be [b:e31a4ad322] inherently[/b:e31a4ad322] cool, one of those people who just [b:e31a4ad322] is[/b:e31a4ad322] but doesn't know it.

Well, I never thought this stuff made me uncool, but now that I'm really thinking about it...ohh yeah.

I'm still sleeping hugging a little pillow that I've had as long as i can remember. I can absolutely not fall asleep without it. It's so pathetic, really. :)

My collecting 1-Pfennig-pieces sort of ended with the Euro so now I have to change that to collecting 1-cent-pieces.

I'm also a big fan of 80s music but I don't think that's my fault. Hey, I grew up with that stuff. It was inevitable. So there! :whistle

And last but SO not least, I'm terrified of [b:fe5a8a1fff] Pete's Dragon[/b:fe5a8a1fff] (Elliott das Schmunzelmonster in German). You know, the Disney movie? Though I didn't know it was Disney until just now, when I had to search for the English name.
I watched it when I was about five, had three different nightmares that I can still (two decades later) describe in detail and avoided everything remotely related to this film ever since.
Because there is no escape from the evil step mother if she sees you. :paranoid

So that's a whole lotta things that make me not cool but I so don't care. :p

Um, I've been told, repeatedly, that I have an unhealthy (bordering on unholy) fondness for show tunes. I can't help it. I just do.

As a 9 year old I went off on a 20 minute diatribe at the dinner table about how Robert Wise ruined the Sound of Music by leaving the best songs from the broadway show out of his movie. I was very passionate about it and refused to watch the movie until I discovered that one of my favorite children's authors -- Julie Edwards -- was actually Julie Andrews. Then all was forgiven and I watched the movie. I always singalong.

As a 12 year old I went door to door in my neighborhood with my clarinet trying to find someone who would listen to my latest Cole Porter / Kurt Weill medley. Strangely, no one ever seemed to be home. Huh.

My parents were very frightened.

Which naturally segued into my obsession with dancers and movies about dancers with great big dance numbers, especially underprivilged kids who dance their way to a better future. Strictly Ballroom is like Holy Communion for me.

Once at a dean's tea at Harvard I bored the dean of students into retirement by deconstructing Electric Boogaloo ad nauseum. Michel Foucault break dancing. He didn't get it.

My professors were very frightened.

I just came back, couldn't help it because hello! Showtunes!

When I am feeling very blue, I love to play that song called "Hard Candy Christmas" from [i:cd27a9f2da] Best Little Whorehouse in Texas[/i:cd27a9f2da].

You know, it's really sad because Dolly Parton has been evicted, and so all the sex workers have to go find new careers and everything.

I like to open all the windows and just belt that one.

But yes, there is [b:cd27a9f2da] cool[/b:cd27a9f2da] and there is [b:cd27a9f2da] inherently cool[/b:cd27a9f2da]. Not the same at all. I think that probably Willow is more regularly [b:cd27a9f2da] cool[/b:cd27a9f2da] than Tara, but maybe Tara is more [/b]inherently[/b] cool than Willow.

Okay, I'm mostly a lurker...something to do with not feeling I have all that much to say...however, on the topic of uncoolness...well I just couldn't hold my tongue.

My uncoolness factor has got to be my unnatural affinity for musicals...any kind, it doesn't matter. Broadway shows, musical movies, hello OMWF...I could sing you anything. I know that makes me a geek (as does being a 30 year old Buffy fan, right...not). The upside is that I entertain the hell out of my co-workers...what with the singing and dancing.
