It's "That's magic!" Wednesday MKF! 12-4-0

Postby BoredNow99 » Wed Dec 04, 2002 12:14 am

So I was watching a TV show on David Blaine the other night while getting a very uncharacteristic early night.

It was the programme that charted his 35 hours at the top of that massive pole in New York, but it was interspersed with clips of him doing his tricks out on the streets.

And Ive gotta say, I love that man. I watch the things he does and I have no logical explanation for them. (No, please, if you have one, dont jump in. I like to be delusional. Its a valid life choice.)

I went into work the following day and asked my colleague if hed seen it. After he said he had, we both said the same thing at the exact same time: Hes really magic, isnt he?

Lame I know. But it got me thinking about magical stuff. Not just tricks or light shows or sleights of hand, but anything that has a magical effect.

And thats my question I guess. Whats magical to you? Maybe its the magic of a sunrise, or the way the air smells in summer after a sudden shower.

Maybe it was seeing your childs first steps or a first declaration of love. Or maybe its Willow and Tara :)

So get out your dolls eye crystals, light that extra flamey candle, and lets get magical, kittens!

Oh and the Thats magic! catchphrase is from an English magician who could rival even Mr Blaine himself one Paul Daniels ;)

And another oh! I like the magical affect hearing Coldplay's The Scientist has on me when it suddenly comes on the radio, like it just has now :)

Lovely daily thread [b:863881ef95]Em[/b:863881ef95] [img:863881ef95]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/blueblob.gif[/img:863881ef95]

Predictable Molly I know, but I find music magical. Am always amazed that no matter how dark my mood, just a few lines of an [b:863881ef95]Indigo Girls[/b:863881ef95] song, and I can't help but feel better.

I also think daisies are magical. So adorable the way they curl up and go to sleep at night or when the weather is inclement. I want to be a daisy!

And do you know what else is magical? Hennessy cognac. Because it makes me think I can sing! [img:863881ef95]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/revolve.gif[/img:863881ef95]

Wow, where to start...

Music, I totally agree. I love and admire all arts, books, painting, everything, but music just goes right to the heart. No detours, no brain. I know that's not true in a scientific sense, but you don't have to think about what you hear, you just feel it.

Very closely related: The human brain. I'm always amazed at how you can recognize some piece of music by hearing the smallest part of it. Best example I know is the beginning of "Nothing compares 2 U" (Sinead O'Connor). It's really just one long chord, no rhythm, no nothing and yet you recognize it right away. It never ceases to amaze me.

The way children see the world. They ask the most amazing questions and learn a language (or even more than one) just by listening. Wow.

Love. Well, that's a given, it's just amazing.

Crushes on first sight. How can that happen? It's so weird, yet it has happened twice to me already.

The way you know what someone thinks or is going to say next if you're really close to them.

I could go on, but I'll stop now. Have a great day everyone :grin

P.S. Great topic!

Well, I have to say that Mother Nature herself performs all kinds of magic for me. I absolutely love the smell in the Spring... it makes my heart fly... you know the one... when the rains come and clean away all the dirt from winter... and it smells like earth! And things start to turn green.

I LOVE it! :bounce

Now THAT'S magic to me... and MAN do I miss that right now. When I see the high for today is a balmy 19 degrees! *sigh*

Paul Daniels. That's magic enough for any girl. Sigh. Dreamy. ;)

The real magic...hmm...I think that comes with the realisation that someone wants you. When you look into their eyes and all you see is you, reflecting that love back. Intangible and just amazingly real at the same time.

"Say, "Yes Paul"."

I had a Paul Daniels magic set. And a book. I used to think he was great. Many of my childhood memories involve watching his shows, which of course included his wife, "the lovely Debbie McGee!"

I was a very strange child.

Great topic! Oddly enough, just the other day, my gf and I were listening to OMWF soundtrack in my car. She started on me about my W/T fascination and said with the deepest concern, "Honey, you know there's no such thing as magic, right?"
Well, I beg to differ. Were it not for some sort of magic she and I would not be together. Of course, this is magic on a different level than what she was describing, but we met on the internet in a chat room. We just happened to be in the same room at the same time and things just happened. To me, there's some sort of magic there. I'd classify fate as a sort of magic. But I won't go into the whole fate thing, I could get a bit philoshopical which would be bad considering I failed my college freshman philosophy course (first time around that is.:grin )
Anyway, I also find the first snowfall magical. The crisp air and the gently falling flakes. It takes me to a wonderful sacred place. And, I have to agree with music being magical as well.

Magic: cabin in the woods on a snowy night, big comfy rug surrounded by dripping candles in front of a huge crackling fire; Enigma playing softly in the background, flames roaring up the chimney pushing away the cold while I cuddle with my honey and watch her body dance in tune with the gentle licks of fire light. To the edge of this is a bottle of wine and a bowl of strawberries and chocolate - now that's magic for me.

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful and if you've no place to go ... let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Like the topic. :grin I agree with those who say 'music'. I'm right-brained, a Leo, and a total dork when it comes to anything that is romatically influenced by music (did that make sense?) I've been surrounded by music since birth. Chorus singing, anybody singing acappella or even in canon (Carol of the Bells). It's like magic how you can relate and sometimes even just...be in your own 'magical' place when you're listening to music. I've grown to love symphonic music, especially the Christmas tunes with the trumpets and the french horns. It's indescribable.

Spring...with someone you love...snuggling...and when you know what your loved one is going to say or do at that exact moment (my gf and I were driving to I forgot where, silence in the car and as we both looked straight down the road we both said 'I love you' the exact same time. Kinda wierd but just...great! Magic?)

And, of course, the topping...sun, moon and STARS. I love to watch the stars. I've always wanted a telescope. Never got one but that's ok, ya know why? I became a glow-in-the-dark freak and adorned my bedroom ceiling in my old apt with the northern hemisphere. It was great. Then I moved into a bsmt apt with my gf. Guess what we did. Painted the bathroom blue (with white ceiling). We have a corner (glass) stand-up shower (I love it). I glued stars all over the place so when you turn off the lights you can see them sparkle, even reflecting off the shower glass. It's awesome. Some of my friends want to move into the bathroom. :lol (I fell in love with the stars on Petra's trailer in When Night is Falling). Yep. It's Magic...

Stars: every time I look up at the sky, it's beautiful and amazing from the grandeur of the Milky Way to the everyday miracle of our Sun.

Even though I know how it works, the intricate ballet of gravity and pressure that creates and sustains every star is just incredible. How can immaterial light generated by thermonuclear reactions in its core hold up 1027 [b:7c72a99730]tons[/b:7c72a99730] of matter in our Sun?

Books are magic. Reading books you can go anwhere, be anything- the escapist in me loves them:) After that, I'd have to say music. Oh, and snow, lightly falling falling snow on a night that there is still enough moonlight to make everything sparkle. Hey, combine all three and be reading all snuggled up next to a fire with music on and snow falling outside...add a girl to snuggle up with and you've got a perfect magical evening.

Okay, Emma and Kittens, here's what I've got. I love what people have said.

Well, it's magic any time my partner finds...anything. Seriously, if you ask her to get some cotton balls, she'll go to the clear glass jar with the cotton balls in it, see only JAR, and come back to say "can't find them."

But what's really magic? Sentences. The kind you arrive at after shuffling and throwing out and replacing and reconsidering and...suddenly...what's in front of you isn't just a collection of words anymore but a sentence, the perfect sentence, the just-right sentence.

Why is it that it's always the "lovely" Debbie McGee? Cuz you know, she's a perfectly nice person and everything, but I think "lovely" is pushing it a bit.

Do you remember when Debbie McGee was on Mrs Merton and she asked her, "So what attracted you to millionaire Paul Daniels?"

All this talk of Paul Daniels has helped me make my mind up about my new avatar.

Yep, I had this lovely little piccie of Wizbit in my collection.:)

What do I find magic, er... Theiry Henry, he's a magical player, the way he can get round defenders is truly a gift.

Ruth, come on! You know it had nothing to do with his money. It was the chance to star alongside him in Wizbit.

How could she resist that theme tune? "Ha ha this-a-way, ha ha that-a-way, ha ha this-a-way, my oh my."

Classic stuff. Can't blame her for wanting a piece of that action :)

And Juli, that truly is a magical talent...but I think it's one she's developed just so you'll wait on her hand and foot ;)

Ooh, Zippy posted while I was posting. Hee! That's Wizbit! And also, bleh to you for mentioning bloody Thierry Henry. I'm still smarting from last weekend's defeat at the hands of the Arse.

Postby Shadow ALH » Wed Dec 04, 2002 12:17 pm

I find art magical. Almost any art will do, but especially certain works. Not just looking at a photo of a painting in a book or in class, but actually being in the museum or wherever and seing it. Personally, when I stand in front of a really great painting or sculpture it is like I can feel the energy raidiating from it. It speaks to me and depending on the work I either start to cry from happiness or I jump up and down like crazy. A good example is Leonardo's Last Supper in Milan. I never really understood the painting before I saw it, but when I did see it it seemed like it radiated from its own light. Its energy overcame me and I felt completely at peace with everything. Tears were streaming down my face, but in a very good, beautiful way. It was completely magical.

Other magical things: the ocean, and of course love. How else could being in my girlfriend's arms feel so perfect?

Oh and as I'm listening to the footy and Jerzy Dudek (Liverpools current dodgy keeper) is having a good game - well there must be magic and wonderments in the air too.

Everyone has come up with really good answers to this. Littlesplinters congratulations! It took me until my third attempt too. I'd love to tell you I was now an excellent driver but my tongue would turn black lying.

I think magic to me always comes from stuff that I remember from being a kid. Back when you genuinely believed anything was possible and the good guys always won. So for me magic comes from the smell of tinsel and the tune "If you wish upon a star" that always comes before the beginning of Disney movies. Oh and panto. Can't forget panto.:p

I honestly believe that if you walk around this world with your mind and your heart open as much as possible, there's more magic out there than you could ever comprehend in a lifetime.

But specifically, i agree with almost all of the above. Books, absolutely. I get an actual physical reaction when i finish a really great book, a little shiver runs through me at that moment. That's magic. Art, of course, and standing in front of a great painting is one of the most magical things in my life. There is an amazing triptych mural painting by Bonnard on loan to the art gallery here now, it stuns me every time i see it. A reproduction could never do it justice, or have the same power. Music, always, especially live music. Love for or from another person will always be great magic.

Finally, nature. I was in the Gatineau park in Quebec in October, and had a moment by myself at a small lake there by an old boathouse. The trees on the other side of the lake were a mixture of red, orange, yellow and green and the colors were reflected in the lake, tinging the water with all those colors. When a great landscape painter puts this on a canvas you'd assume they were exaggerating. But that's really how it looks. And that's magic.

Speaking of girlfriends...
During an argument, my gf can magically transport us to my last five offenses, as if no time has passed at all. That an incident happened five years ago is no barrier to my girl. Nice that she has such a freaky memory and STILL loves me.

When I write. On a good day, I forget everything and everyone and become whoever the character is, and it's so real and so beautiful and so honest because I am living this whole other life for the two, three, four hours I'm doing this and so none of what I'm writing is fake (I hope, anyway) because I am these people.

Also, when you look at the person you're in love with and they look at you and it is just so palpable, so right between you, and you know that it's forever. Anything having to do with love because I think love is the essence of all magic. Where would we be without it?

Plus, pretty nature things. Raindrops, flowers blooming, snowfall, sunlight, the stars, blah blah blah- I always think those things are so amazing and magical.

Readers: How do they see the things that they do in my writing? It's great when they see what I intended, humbling when they see what I missed, but the miracle is when they see something that I never saw when writing or revising but which is really there. While it's obvious, I think that we often forget that writing requires a reader as well as a writer.

Magic? The way that one person can change the way that your entire day (or week) can turn out. Like if you're fighting with a good friend it can wreck your day right there on the spot. Or a friend could tell a joke and just brighten up your day...Sigh. I miss my friends.

Another magical thing is pets - for me it's my dogs. How they are just so innocent to the world around them. A world war could be going on and they wouldn't know it as being any different and would continue to prance around. :)

And of course music. You may have never met the singer, they may be completely different to you and yet the words they sing can touch you in so many different ways.
