It's Dear God I Bought That? Weekend MKF! 11-16-02

Postby tommo » Sat Nov 16, 2002 2:55 pm

Okay, so I'm watching a programme on telly about the top 100 singles in pop. And god, some of them are causing a huge cringe that will have me hiding for a long, long time. It's odd though, how something like Careless Whisper can come in in the top 40 and yet the fabulous song stylings of the Wombles just misses being up there at the top. A travesty.

Anyway, after I realised that most of the songs getting trashed verbally on this programme belonged in my collection, and after marvelling at the tightness of the pants on the cop from the Village People, I was forced reconsider having Whigfield's Saturday Night among my prized CDs.

So, what single have you bought that you now wish you really hadn't? Considering, you know, that my current music taste is pretty much the same as my neice's.

She's 8, by the way.

I wonder if Willow and Tara have guilty record secrets that they attempt to hide from one another. My betting is that Bright Eyes figures largely in Willow's collection, and that she produces it from time to time to taunt Anya. Heh.

Have a good weekend, folks.

Incidentally, the best selling single over the last 50 years is...Candle In The Wind by Elton John. And it only became the biggest selling single after the death of Diana: Princess of Wales.

I shudder to confess that, back in the day, I bought not one, but two Andy Gibb LPs.* As Buffy once said "Thus confirming my status in the Dork Hall of Fame."

GG And I was 17---way old enough to know better . . . Out

*I pray none of you youngsters remember him! :barf

tommo, can you do the saturday night dance?

Whigfield rocks. Um, no, that is a lie.

I own Jason Donovan's song from Joseph and his technicolour whatsit - the one that goes 'I close my eyes, drew back the curtain aaah to see for certain, what I thought I knew' (If that is transcribed wrong, I apologise, having not heard the song for 10 years or so.)

Also recalling New Kids on the Block. And "Hanging tough", which was actually a great record. I remember having to decide, to make a conscious choice, at the age of 9, which one of them I was going to fancy.
Problematised by 1) them being a big bunch of mingers and 2) me probably being gay.

But the video from Saturday night, and Whigfield in the towel and the hair in plaits....

I love looking thorough people's record collections because they always lie to you about what they have in it. Case in point - that Brian Adams song from the Robin Hood movie was at number one for frickin' ever. Yet if you ask around no one ever bought it.:whistle

To my deep, deep shame I own more than one Roxette album. Hey, I was really, really young. All kids have rather questionable taste in music. No offence Ruth. ;)

I remember doing the same exact thing with New Kids on the Block. I think I picked Jon, only because no one else liked him.

The worst "Dear God I Bought That" CDs for me would have to be Debbie Gibson. Sad thing is, I still have 2 of them.

Hmm...also I have a single of "The Macarena" and "Achy, Breaky Heart"...*shudders*

My 1st single - 1979, Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip - I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper

Hey, Captain Strange, won't you be my lover
You're the best thing that I've ever discovered
Flash Gordon's left me, he's gone to the stars
An evil Darth Vader has me banished to Mars

Tell me, Captain Strange, do you feel my devotion
Or are you like a droid, devoid of emotion
Encounters one and two are not enough for me
What my body needs is close encounter three

I lost my heart to a starship trooper
Flashing lights in hyper space
Fighting for the Federation
Hand in hand we'll conquer space

Supermarket Sweep by Dale Winton. There really is no logical reason on this earth why a person would buy that song. All I will say is that I was at college, daytime TV featured heavily on the curriculum, and I thought it was ironic in a post-modern kind of way.

Or in other words, I was a bit of a twat :)

can you do the dance to the macarena?

We had a family wedding earlier this year and I'm pretty sure I had to do the macarena and saturday night dances in front of all the relations. But i was pissed, so I can't remember.

Bad bad things.

I have the coordination of a lumbering oaf...so the Macarena was actually a dance I could do...although for some reason always felt insanely moronic doing so.

Yes, I can. I hold the dubious honour of knowing most of the dances from most of the shittiest songs in the world. What? It's a thing...

Rick James album 'Street Songs' who here remembers "Super Freak'' and "Give It to Me Baby''?

Willow and Tara definitely like alternative rock/grunge

Oh yeah, I remember that. I bought it too...I think I still have it. I'm a CD-holic...I buy CDs like people buy groceries. In fact, I've done without groceries in order to buy CDs.

I've had tons of those novelty CDs...Lou Bega (Mambo #5), The Macarena, Eiffel 65 (I'm Blue), Aqua, Las Ketchup, etc.

Oh God, not Las Ketchup. That CD is buried in the crap pile on my desk at work. Yecch...

I bought "Macarena" and later when I went to sell it to a used CD store, they wouldn't buy it back. :miff

Who mentioned the song from "Robin Hood"? 'Cause that was the first CD I ever got, and I even had the sheet music to "Everything I Do (I Do it for You)" and could play along with the song. I still don't hate it. :blush

I never succumbed to the uber-suckiness of New Kids on the Block, though.

At one time, I did own every Monkees album made and would get incredibly angry if I missed the rerun on Nickelodeon (okay, I was in the 5th grade). hee!

OMG...I was totally addicted to the Monkees when it was on Nickelodeon! I watched it every single day. I even bought they're "Pool It!" RECORD when it came out and saw them in concert in Lake Tahoe at a casio. Obsessed comes to mind.

Haha. Same here. CDs and books are my downfall. I know what it's like... spending so much money in Borders that I end up eating top ramen everyday for 2 weeks.

I still have a Richard Marx CD or two around somewhere. I think I boxed them up with many other unmentionables at some point back in college, meaning to go sell them at a used CD store or trade them in, and never quite managing to work up the stomach for the job.

And I have a CD of Xander screaming in agony and begging the forgiveness of everyone he knows for being a selfish asshole for the past several years.

Oh. Wait. No I don't. I only imagined that. Tee-hee. But it would be music to my ears indeed.

Being the music-gal I am...I looked through my list of CDs (yes, I have them sorted on a spreadsheet, I have that many)...more of the "Dear God" variety...

Paula Abdul's remix CD
Hanson - MmmBop (too embarrassing for words)
Jimmy Ray - Are You Jimmy Ray?
Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life (ok, SG are a guilty pleasure)
Wilson Phillips
A Carpenter's Tribute CD (EEK!)

jaycatt23,

Heh. New Kids on the Block. I remember having to pick a favorite one in junior high. My best friend's bedroom was a shrine to them--posters and T-shirts and mugs and everything. I think I picked Jon, because that was her favorite...and I was into *whatever* she liked. ;)

My personal cassette shames--I still have my copy of Milli Vanilli.

Well, I requested the following CD's for Christmas one year and actually got them:

Barry White
Anne Murray
Carly Simon

I can also sympathize with those who bought The Monkees music. :( Sadly, I got sucked into their newfound poopularity when MTV and Nickelodeon started playing that crazy show they had. *Shudders at the next thought* I even went to their concert when they toured many moons back. I think I had something for Peter Tork. :confused What that something was I don't recall or perhaps I have blocked it from my memory.

Thank God I figured out I liked girls.:)

Okay, here goes: Wilson Phillips, Ace of Base, and Color Me Badd are my worst. Though techincally CMB was a gift from my brother when I was about nine. I use the term 'gift' loosely. Basically he bought it for himself, realized he hated it and tossed it at me. I actually do own The New Kids On The Block greatest hits c.d. but I have it listed under my 'guilty pleasures' catagory. Okay, you can all stop laughing now. I think new shades of crimson are being invented on my face right now.
