Postby caged heart » Wed Oct 23, 2002 6:14 pm

I'm going to see No Doubt & Garbage at the Baltimore Arena tonight, and am so excited I feel the need to start a concert-themed daily thread. So...

What was the first concert you ever went to? What's the best concert you've ever been to?

And...

What band or artist do you think Willow & Tara would go see together?

My first concert was New Kids on the Block. First two concerts actually. (Shut up, I was 10.)

The best concert I've ever been to... that's hard, I've been to some good shows. But I have to go with Madonna's Drowned World Tour. I've been a Madonna fan since I was 5 years old so just being there, finally seeing her live, was amazing. And she puts on a damn good show.

As for Willow & Tara... I can totally picture them being Ani DiFranco fans. I don't think they would go in for gen admission moshy-type shows, but I can see them digging Ani.

Heh well, as I posted in a different thread, my first concert was the Bangles.

I've also seen the Grateful Dead, Ani Difranco, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls ( got to meet them mollyig!)
Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant nix the 1000 Maniacs. Jewel, The Furthur Festival, and numerous other things so it's hard to choose the best one. Probably Lilith Fair #1 cause all my favourite bands played together...

Hmmmm, the VERY FIRST CONCERT I ever went to was Barry Manilow, with my mom and her boyfriend, when I was 5. He did his whole thing, and then at the end asked for audience volunteers to come on stage with him and sing "I Can't Smile Without You." I waved my hand in the air like a crazy loon, but of course got passed over in favor of a long haired seventies stylistic twentysomething. I was crushed. (grin)

The first concert I ever went to because I wanted to, was James Taylor when I was 12. Since then, I've seen him 3 more times, Ani Difranco 5 times, Natalie Merchant sans Maniacs, the Indigo Girls 3 times, the Lilith Fair twice, Sheryl Crow, They Might Be Giants, Alice DeMicelle, Kendall Payne, Michele Malone, and a bunch more that I'm too tired to list.

I think Willow and Tara would be all about James Taylor, or maybe Nanci Griffith. I think they would buy the cheapskate lawn seats, pack a picnic, snuggle during the day and slow dance on the grass when it got dark...

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running...
Winter Spring Summer or Fall
all you have to do is call, and I'll be there...

Yeah, they'd be oblivious to everyone but themselves, they'd be standing together holding hands and touching forheads, dancing in a little circle, with fireflies all over the place around them...Ach, it's like buttah.

Edited to add: Wiccansillusion, I'm SO JEALOUS that you saw the Bangles! I luuuuuurvvvve the Bangles. Did you ever see the ep of Gilmore Girls where Lorelei takes Suki, Rory, Paris, Louise and what's her name all to a Bangles concert? It's fab.

I've never seen the episode. I was actually a seven year old hippie chick when I saw them, had no idea what I was getting myself into LOL.

You saw Michelle? I saw her once when she opened for Indigo Girls...

First concert I ever attended was Luka Bloom, in my hometown (which is his hometown too).

Best concert has been all 7 [b:769e76861f]Indigo Girls[/b:769e76861f] concerts I've been to. I'm sure no-one is surprised by this! [b:769e76861f][i:769e76861f]WiccansIllusion[/i:769e76861f][/b:769e76861f] you met my girls? Molly be envious! [img:769e76861f]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/winkgreen.gif[/img:769e76861f]

And to be consistent I'll say that Willow and Tara would go see [b:769e76861f]Indigo Girls[/b:769e76861f] [img:769e76861f]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/blueblob.gif[/img:769e76861f]

As I posted in yesterday's thread, the Nina Simone concert I was so looking forward to was cancelled. But on the bright side I'll be getting a refund for the tickets, so on the strength of that I ordered the Lilith Fair DVD.

Also, I'd love to see Michelle Malone in concert. Pity she never opened for them here.

Sorry that your Nina Simone concert got cancelled, mollyig. I went to see her at Ronnie Scotts years ago and it was definitely one of the best concerts I've been to. Other memorable concerts were by Ella Fitzgerald and Patti Smith plus a whole lot of classical concerts. I went to an amazing one just recently, Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle playing Haydn and Mahler. Other ones that I'll never forget include English Baroque Soloists with John Eliot Gardiner playing Bach cantatas on their Bach pilgrimage project, Murray Perahia playing/directing Mozart piano concertos and Bach's St. Matthew Passion conducted by Andras Schiff.

As for Willow and Tara, well I thought Willow would have a love for interesting indy groups and we know she's a fan of Cibo Matto. Tara I think might be more into women singers and folk.

My first concert was Elron John (very big deal for a small town girl). Had to travel to the big city and everything. Best concert was probably Melissa Etheridge (followed closely by U2 - Joshua Tree tour).

I think Willow and Tara would go and see a local indie band playing at the Bronze.

And seeing Garbage live - I'm sooo jealous. Shirley kicks ass (literally).

My first concert was Portishead in Bristol, UK about 5 years ago. (Coming from the countryside, I hadn't actually been able to go to a concert before going to college :( ) Fantastic.
Since then, I've seen Tina Turner, Jon Bon Jovi, Texas, Mary J. Blidge, Placebo, Sting, Moby, Ash, Stereophonics, Alanis Morrissette...

But the best was definitely U2 in Slane Castle, near Dublin last year. 85,000 people. Absolutely brilliant.

Going to see Alicia Keys next week and the Cranberries in December!

My first concert was Bon Jovi, then uh...*speaks very quietly* (it's 4 years ago now) the spice girls .. :blush , *ahem*, Heather Nova, Whitney Houston (but i gotta admit, it wasn't good), then i saw different groups on a festival, like Rammstein, the prodigy. I really wanna see Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan live too in the future!

Hey,

I was talking to Jessie, the woman that ran the Witchblade Charity auction and they brought in a very impressive $10,113.00 for Beacon House, Habitat for Humanity and Hollygrove.

So I wanted to extend (if I may) the Kitten's and my own congratulations to the Jessie and all the Witchblade fans that raised so much for their charities! See, SciFi fans are the best fans in the world.

Now I just have to figure out a way to get Jessie and her team to come over here and help us with Trevor for next year! ;)

If you want to personally wish them congratulations (I think it would be nice), they have an ezboard as well at pub83.ezboard.com/bwitchbladetheseries , and there is a thread for it at pub83.ezboard.com/fwitchb...=233.topic in their off-topic forum.

Nice Thursday, everyone!

The very first concert I went to was Paul MacCartney's, when he was here in Rio, I don't remember the year, but it was in the 80's and in Maracan. I'll remember this concert for a serious amount of time!

Willow and Tara seem to like music like Loreena McKennitt and Joni Mitchell, I'm not sure.

Well, off I go!

Have a nice day, kittens.

Greetings and Happy Thursday!!

My boss called yesterday and gave me the morning off today so I'm just going to putz around until I really have to get my butt in gear. My girl will be back tomorrow so I'm in an exceptionally good mood.

My first concert that I can remember I'm pretty sure was Styx Paradise Theater tour. And unlike the rest of the group that went, I did not think Tommy Shaw was all that. I went for the music but they were all screaming at the top of their lungs when him and JT came on stage.

I've seen many concerts and they've been all different types of music. Call me a loser but I thought Garth Brooks was amazing. He has so much energy. Rod Stewart, Elton John, Billy Joel, Melissa Etheridge, U2. Once in Vegas, I was visiting my parents for moms birthday and I bought her tickets to see the Everly Brothers. She loves them. My dad had to work so he couldn't go. I got her front row seats and she almost embarrassed me. I thought for a minute she would throw her panties on stage. Lesson to be learned: For your moms birthday, never buy tickets to a concert that she would embarrass you at. I think I'll stay with flowers from now on.

Anyway, have a great Thursday Kittens!!!

Love to All,
Barb

first concert i went to was Motley Crue back in 1989, about the only thing i can remeber about it was it was the first time i got really drunk and the people sitting two rows in front of my friends and i were smoking pot. the best concert i went to is a tie between Megadeth on their last tour and Slayer.

I've only been to two concerts im my life.
The first was Roxette in the beginning of the 90s.
The other was an Indigo Girls concert in April. Yay! I saw the date and location 1 day before they were playing in Hamburg. It was very stressful to get a concert ticket, find the right train and find a place to crash, all in one day. But it was soooo worth it.

On far less pleasant stuff.
My thoughts are with the over 500 people being held hostage by about 40 Chechens in the music theatre in Moscow since yesterday evening.
They demand the retreat of the Russians from Chechenia in a weeks time or they will blow the whole building up.
Oh yeah...this world is such a wonderful place.:(

For those of you who are fans of LOTR, I just found some sweet stuff at AICN.

The WB is thrilled to announce that we have secured an exclusive behind-the-scenes preview special for the year's most anticipated film: "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers." This one-hour special is scheduled for air December 4th in the 8pm time period.

"Return to Middle-Earth" follows the 'Rings' celebrated cast as they come back together in New Zealand to shoot additional footage for the upcoming film "The Two Towers." Each cast member gives their personal take on the arduous three-year shoot and what they took away from this historic filmmaking experience.

The WB audience will be treated to multiple world premiere clips from "The Two Towers," including and extended look at the film's climactic battle sequence.

Hmmm...first concert.....well I'm sure this will date me beyond all recognition but....my very FIRST concert was Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles in 1973 at the Forrest Theater in Philly. I was about 5 yrs old and had a complete blast. I've been to a ton of concerts since then, all somewhat diametrically opposed as far as music genres. Let's see I've seen Steven Curtis Chapman, Billy Joel, Indigo Girls, The WHFS Festival in MD (with a cast of many), Amy Grant, Margaret Becker, DeGarmo and Key, Michael W. Smith, RUSH, Pat Benatar (that concert ROCKED!), Mary Chapin Carpenter, Vince Gill, Perry Como (don't ask), Kenny Rogers, Luther Vandross, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss, Jennifer Holliday, Bette Midler and the list goeth on. I'm a music ho....I know it :grin

Hmmmm, all these concerts are making want to hit one today!

A couple of comments...

Michele Malone was fabulous. She played a little arthouse theatre in Cinncinnati about a year ago, my friend got tickets and called me. It was a very intimate setting, and she was AMAZING!

I looove Portishead? Were they good? I bet a concert of theirs would be intense.

Also, I've always wanted to see Elton John, but I've been reluctant because I so love his work in the 70s (mona lisas and mad hatters and levon give me chills every time I hear them) but not his later work. Does he do a fairly good mix, or is it mostly his later, more pop sounding stuff?

Also, Tina Turner, I'm completely jealous!!!! She didn't come anywhere near me on her farewell tour, and I was devastated!!!! And how cool is it that Gloria Reuben quit her job on ER that year just to tour with Tina as a backup singer??

Finally, Warduke I'm pretty sure that Return to Middle Earth special is the one that is included in the special features on the DVD. I rented the DVD not to long ago and it had a two hour special called Return to Middle Earth, where they interviewed cast members about their experiences, looked at the CGI parts of the filmmaking process, showed clips from the big battle, examined where the plot was going, did a set design preview, and some other stuff.

If anyone is interested in a commercial free sneak-sneak peek, rent the DVD. For people who don't have DVD players, then yay for the WB! :grin

Postby Arafel the Witch » Thu Oct 24, 2002 7:37 am

My first ever concert was Rush at Radio City Music Hall. I write about music and for the last 5 years have gone to up to 50 concerts a year. I am the tape archivist for Cowboy Junkies, so I get to go to a lot of their shows. Here are some other shows:

-Van Halen, w/ David Lee Roth, in 1984.
-Iron Maiden, with Queensryche opening, 1985.
-Triumph, 1985.
-Squeeze-1987
-Many many Grateful Dead concerts, 1989-1994. I did the touring thing with them in 90 and 91.
-Many other jam band concerts, including Phish, Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic, Leftover Salmon, and String Cheese Incident. I caught most of those bands before anyone knew who they were, and caught all of them in venues that hold less than 1000 people.
-Telluride Bluegrass Festival-last 5 years
-RockyGrass Festival.
-Many Irish and Celtic bands, including Lunasa, Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Cherish the Ladies, and the Chieftains (RIP Derek Bell :(
-Tori Amos. Every tour since 1986.
-Ani DiFranco-every tour since 1995
-Natalie Merchant-dating back to the 10,000 Maniacs days
-Ben Harper (I have a huge crush on him right now)
-Alanis Morrissette

Here are some of the most memorable
-Rush at Radio City in 1983. First concert, and an excellent one in a beautiful venue
-Van Halen, Madison Square Garden, 1984. Such a production, and Diamond Dave's last tour.
-Squeeze, 1987. First concert on my college campus, and one of the quintessential college bands
-Grateful Dead, Giants Stadium, 1989. My eyes are opened. Many of my favorite concert memories center on the Dead, including the three Nassau Colisseum shows in 1990, one of which featured a first-time performance of The Weight, and another which featured Branford Marsalis sitting in.
-HORDE tour, 1992, Jones Beach. The "baby-jam bands concert", just as they were starting to gain popularity. Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic, Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler and Phish, all on the same bill. Absolutely amazing.
-1998 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. An Old and int he Way reunion, excellent sets by Emmylou Harris and Nanci Griffith,a John Hartford performance from when he was healthier, String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon, and many more. It was the festival's 25th anniversary, and what a party. Haven't missed one since
-Ani DiFranco, Red Rocks, 1997. Ani's first Red Rocks concert was outstanding, and very memorable for the amount of people who showed up.
-Lillith Fair, Fiddler's Green, 1998. Cowboy Junkies, Natalie Merchant, Joan Osborne, Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan. Excellent concert.
-Widespread Panic, Red Rocks, 2002. Michael Houser's last performances. Though he was clearly weak from his battle with cancer, he played very well and smiled a lot. Two months later he was dead.
-Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, Telluride, 2002. What a pairing.

I could go on, but will stop for now.

Heh. The first non-classical orchestra/symphony type concert that I ever went to was Duran Duran with my best friend, Mike, in the 9th grade. Terrence Trent d'Arby opened for them. It was a pretty fun show.

Best concert? That would have to be Tori Amos at the San Diego civic center theater. Or Sarah McLachlan and Paula Cole (back before anyone knew who she was, and she was still playing her clarinet and banging her foot against a taped up cookie sheet for percussion, rocking out like the revenge of the band geeks) on the Fumbling Towards Ecstasy tour at Spreckles, which is pretty much the coolest little theater I've ever been to. The first year of Lilith Fair was pretty great, too. I saw the Irvine show, headlined by Sarah, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Tracy Chapman (who my mother just fell in love with, it was so cute).

The first concert I went to was Peter Paul and Mary with my parents when I was a kid.

BEST concert would either be Sarah McLachlan (seen her 5 times), Tori Amos (seen her 6 times, and seeing her 2 more this fall), and Garbage (only saw them once, but it was THAT good). So I am very jealous that you get to see Garbage AND No Doubt!!

I've also seen They Might Be Giants a number of times, and Gin Blossoms, and Jewel, and anyone else at all 3 Lilith Fair's in my area.

I missed seeing Paula Cole, because the night she was supposed to play at an intimate little club, there was a major snow storm and the rescheduled date was the same day as Tori Amos!

Willow and Tara would like to see Dar Williams, I'm sure ^_^

(edited cause i forgot the # of times I've seen Sarah ^_^)
