Postby Coma123 » Wed Sep 18, 2002 9:09 pm

Ok first time I've ever started a daily thread so here goes.
As the thread title says what are the Kittens reading at this point in time, today. Books, mags, articles, homework. You name it.
And obviously what are W/T reading.
Here's hoping we got some interesting choices. :)

Oh as for myself I've just finished James Ellroys The Cold Six Thousand. Fascinating read but not as strong as American Tabloid. Also flicking through a local music press.

Interesting topic :)
At this point in time I am not reading anything (not counting the Kitten Board). Too many shifts, too little time. The last book I finished was Harry Potter part 4 (second time I read it and I totally forgot the title). I used to read more but time is forever lacking.
As for WT, not sure what they would read, I would probably just end up projecting.

(Btw I edited in the day of the week in your thread title)

Hehe. Wish I could say Mr. Vertigo by Paul Oster. But nah, that was ages ago *Smiles nostalgically*

Actually I just finished reading Hood by Emma Donoghue. Ive gone to a lot of trouble to get it, including having finally come out to my mom :) . Its not a stunningly good book but it has its moments. Mostly I read it as the obligatory lesbian book of the year so I didnt expect much in the first place. Not that Im bashing it, its [b:3afc93c983] not[/b:3afc93c983] a bad book. Just not something I wouldve read normally. Heh. I used to be [i:3afc93c983] such[/i:3afc93c983] a bookworm and now I read the obligatory. Shame on me.

What Im mostly reading these days are parts from a book my friend is writing. Well, not reading in the strictest sense but also sort of helping out sticking my creative nose where it doesnt belong, that is :) . Its a fantasy book and I think itll be end up being a very good one, with a decent shot at being published.

I am reading "N" by Claudia Frenzel, German author; it's about a young woman with a sleeping disorder written from her persepctive and in a language that is really appealing to me. She talks like she was actually talking to the reader, not writing, so there are a lot of loose connections in thought and a lot of swearing ;) Me likes so far.

I guess after all of the literary trash I took on vacation, I felt like my mind needed to be cleansed. My gf, her cousins, and I were passing an unintentionally funny Jackie Collins novel back and forth for about a week. It ended up covered with sand, booze, and sunblock.

So, now that I'm back to work, I'm reading "The Basque History of the World," by Mark Kurlansky, and "Academic Outlaws:Queer Theory and Cultural Studies in the Academy," by William G. Tierney. I also want to read, "The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain," by Maria Rosa Menocal. But, I don't feel like buying it after spending money on my car's latest outrage, so I'm waiting for my mom to finish her copy so that I can borrow it.

I think Willow would read mysteries or sci-fi for fun, and Tara would like the Harry Potter books. But you never know with those two. Maybe they have a fabulous collection of lesbian erotica, and read it aloud to each other when the mood hits.

Well at the moment I'm reading up on an archbishop, 'Romero' for a film study essay, but I just finished reading the first part, "The Burning" from the "Unseen" trilogy...I have to wait till I have more money to buy the next part, really bad idea buying one at a time, I tell you! "The Burning" just confirmed my belief that books based on television series are not worth the paper they're written on.
Other than that I'm just following a million and one fanfics, they seem to be taking over the time that I would normally read books.

i'm actually sitting in a library right now. hehe.

I can totally see Tara reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams. Of the 'insect reflection' context? Ya know, same logic. :)

OMG! Mrs Vertigo, I'm also reading [i:f0fd857c4e] Hood[/i:f0fd857c4e]. I kinda like it, there are some really touching moments in it.

And I'm simultaneously (re)reading [i:f0fd857c4e] The World According to Garp[/i:f0fd857c4e] by John Irving. Such a funny novel!

Currently reading the last chapter of Tulipp's "Terra Firma", but I keep going away from it to make it last longer. [i:0465ec6379]sigh![/i:0465ec6379]

The book that's keeping me company on my bus journies this week is Laurie R King's "Folly", and its marvellous. I love her books, and would be very happy should she write another Kate Martinelli book! [img:0465ec6379]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/winkgreen.gif[/img:0465ec6379]

Postby dulcinea » Thu Sep 19, 2002 12:12 am

at the moment, I'm in the midst of reading a few books, "the mockery bird" by Gerald Durrell (I made a friend read "the halfmen of O" - my favourite book when I was a kid, so I had to read one of his choice), "forty words for sorrow", and an anthology of New Zealand short stories (from my phase of 'must read more local fiction')

of course, along with all the fic on pens that I'm trying to keep up with, and the numerous "superman" comics I've been reading at work, I'm getting a bit confused about what is happening in all the books I'm reading.

I'm re-reading "Women who run with the wolves" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. It's one of my all time favourite books as it's so beautifully written and never fails to inspire me.

I have obligatory books, too: Rita Mae Brown's autobiography right now :grin

Also, Gnter Grass: My century.

The last book I finished was "Dune". (The first one, I'll have to get the other ones, too.)

And I totally agree with Tara liking Douglas Adams. Fits her weird sense of humour :D

Edited to add: And I torture myself by re-reading Harry Potter in French to try and not completely forget the little French I know. (And I know it's completely stupid for a German to read the French translation of an English book, but I have to take something I really love, or I won't do it at all.)

Reading...that was what I used to do instead of write fanfic - used to be 3-5 books a week, now down to less than one.

Um, I recently read the 1633 by Eric Flint & David Weber, the new civil war mystery by Owen Parry (forgot the name!), and BTVS teen novel These Our Actors. In my reading stack I have the new mysteries by Dana Stabenow (Liam Campbell series not Kate Shugak) and Carol O'Connell (a new Mallory novel - Yay!). And next week I will be reading David Weber's War of Honor.

Willow would like some of the classic SF/F authors, esp. Isaac Asimov's robot stories. I think they would both read Lois McMasters Bujold and I think that Civil Campaign would be one of Tara's favorite books. I also think they would be reading Diane Duane's "Wizard" series (So You Want to be a Wizard is the first book) since those books blend real world, magick, and science.

I'm reading a few things at the moments:

- Fanfic-wise: [i:0b153185ee] Tears of the Goddess[/i:0b153185ee] by Lisa of Nine. Again. She's just the best around!

- Book-wise: My all time favourite: [i:0b153185ee] The Celestine Prophecy[/i:0b153185ee] by James Redfield. Again.

- Magazine-wise: the new SFX collector "Special Babes"... Not much reading, much more :drool ... ;) (Aly, Amber, SMG and Emma all present...)

Very diverse, but hey! That's me! :wink

I'm mostly reading a ton of Richard Dawkins books for my evolutionary psychology class.

I think Willow and Tara probably read Jeanette Winterson books. Out loud, to each other, cuddled up in bed, of course!

I could see Tara being a Douglas Adams fan, but I see Willow having read a lot of Robert Heinlen (sp) books. Right now I'm rereading the Harry Potter series (I got the whole set in paperback for my birthday... my mother in law got tired of me borrowing hers when I wanted to read them I suppose :) ) and I'm also rereading The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk, which, come to think of it, Tara and Willow would probably read as well :)

I am reading,

"Mind Hunter" by John Douglas, the famous FBI profiler that Thomas Harris used as his inspiration for "Silence of the Lambs". This man is brilliant. When I grow up I want to be John Douglas.

"Lady of Avalon" bu MZB. Prequal to "Mists of Avalon", so far it is good.

"Linux: The Complete Reference" cause I have an older computer that Linux might work on.

Right now i'm reading 'The Formations of Modernity', 'Modernity and it's futures'....etc in prep for my first year History degree.

BUT APART FROM THAT BORING STUFF i have a nice life reading the new Elizabeth Wurtzel book - 'More , Now, Again' - i think it's fair to say i really love her books :) and for a bit of trash on the side Armisted Maupin's 'Tales of the City'.

i could really see Tara liking Douglas Adams and Harry Potter , but for some reason i could also see her really going for Toni Morrison.......and well Willow would probably like Sarah Waters ;) and maybe some darker but touchingly subtle reads like 'Lazy Bones' (totally forgotton the author sorry). i could really see Willow going for biographies , or biography based reads like Frank Mcourt.

have a good thursday kittens! :) i will be saying goodbye to my soulmate today as he heads off to uni , this will be the longest we have been apart in the seven years of knowing eachother.........and no i'm not in a vunerable mood...

Im currently reading Demon of the Waters by Gregory Gibson which is an account of a mutiny that occurred in 1824 on a whale ship. Im also reading Gateway to Atlantis by Andrew Collins which is another theory about the lost continent, and Im thumbing through God: A Brief History by John Bowker. I just finished my obligatory weekly lesbian trash novel by Robbie Summers, you know, just so I can be a more well -rounded individual.

Im sure Willow and Tara are reading some sort of volumey text and putting that information to good use.

I've read a lot this summer. It's been nice, going to the library every few weeks and getting lots of good reads in. :)

I did read a lot of research books for a story I'm writing, but got kind of bogged down in it. So I opted for the less intellectual and got some trashy novels which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then I moved onto a Clive Barker novel; [i:13291465d1] Galilee[/i:13291465d1], which was truly odd and didn't really seem to have any plot to it. It read more like a biography than anything else. I did, however, read a great novel by Anne Fine called [i:13291465d1] The Killjoy[/i:13291465d1] which was very disturbing but hey, I like that kind of thing.

Right now, I'm contemplating getting back to reading my biography of Slyvia Plath. Sigh. She's an odd bird. Really.

Did someone mention John Irving? I'm sort of a fanatic.

On that note, I just finished rereading [u:cbf365543b] Sophie's World[/u:cbf365543b] by Jostein Gaarder for the millionth time. Its a great book about the history of philosophy as told through a mysterious novel. (Gaarder also wrote [u:cbf365543b] The Solitare Mystery[/u:cbf365543b], another book I love. Oh, and he's Norweigan, so I'm reading English translations, but if there's anyone from Norway...)

From a friend I borrowed a couple of books on the Bayeaux Tapestry - won't be seeing the real thing anytime soon, and the different images are historically interesting.

I just finished re-reading Starship Troopers by Heinlein. Politics aside, it's a fun read, with a realistic view of people in combat and the only Filipino hero in all of sci-fi. Don't get me started on the blonde guy cast for the movie version...

Just started The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by Le Carre. Never read it before, what can I say?

As for W/T, they'd be reading textbooks for the new fall term (matriculation with the class of 2003, eh?), but perhaps practising lines for Willow's drama courses at night.

I'm currently hung up in the middle of Jeanette Winterson's The Passion, which although porported to be her best work, I'm finding to be rather a disappointment. It's awfully bleak. And yanno, I don't mind fairly bleak as long as I see tendrils of hope threaded throughout. But um... not seein' 'em here. Actually haven't touched it now for about two weeks, as I've been focusing more on writing lately. Plus I got the latest Shannara novel in the mail over the weekend, which I devoured in about 36 hours. Hee. Lovely distraction, that Terry Brooks. He's like comfort food. Him and Anne McCaffrey. My honey and I have also of late been snuggling our way through the first Harry Potter book before bedtime, reading aloud to each other. Well, mostly she makes me read. But I don't mind it. Heh.

At any rate, I need to finish The Passion so I can move on to Sarah Waters' Fingersmith. Been looking forward to that one. The only thing I've read by her was Tipping the Velvet, but my god... what a book. Hee. Love that woman. I couldn't possibly be any more jealous of you British Kitties, getting that BBC miniseries. :miff

Well, right now I'm reading [b:8d8368f020]The Lennon Diaries[/b:8d8368f020] about John Lennon, but I always read five or six books at once so at any time I stop reading that book and read something else- usually any one of my books by Francesca Lia Block. Does anyone on the list know of her? She's an amazing writer, lots of girl friendship and love, she always has gay characters (either best friends of the main characters or sometimes the main characters themselves), she describes every taste, touch, feeling, sound, smell so perfectly, I'm so inspired by her writing. She writes of faeries, ghosts, magick, love. I recommend every single one of her books and have gotten all my close girl friends hooked on her work.

I totally could see Tara reading Francesca Lia Block novels, and in fact, in a series of fanfic I've written, she does.

I am actually reading now it's amazing, I thought I no longer had time for such things. So I had seen lots of interesting titles at worldcon, especially at the Spectrum Awards, and I happened to recogonize one of the covers when I was shopping at Borders over the weekend.
It's [b:f181c0879b] Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey[/b:f181c0879b], it was a finalist for best novel in the Spectrum Awards. It's a huge fantasy novel, first part of a trilogy. But it is an excellent read and I am really glad I picked it up.

And on the off topic note, hurrah, my last day at work this week. It has been insane, my boss just quit, things are crazy. But tomorrow I get to relax and pack before heading out to exotic Birmingham, Alabama. ;)
