OMWF soundtrack release - Street Date 9.24.02

Postby superzonic(d) » Sat Jul 27, 2002 12:40 pm

Rounder records has announced the release of the OMWF soundtrack for 9.17.02.

Maybe old news , but i hadnt seen it posted.

edited to add:
Um, well i have no idea what kind of cut Amber would/could get but its a nice, independant label to chose for releasing the soundtrack. I doubt anyone is gonna be making a mint off of this. Sounds like a labor of love and i look forward to having Amber in all her remastered glory parked in my cd carousel.
I hear ya tho...she deserves a pile of chabo for her talent and efforts.

Z

**amended 8.8.02**
Rounder has the street date for the soundtrack set for 9.24.02. Preorders will arrive by that date.

Don't think that's old news at all. It's certainly the first I've heard of it. I sure hope Amber gets some royalties from it. Any of our entertainment lawyers [i:0e94b1ac78] Autumn stares hard at RelativeGirl[/i:0e94b1ac78] care to weigh in and let us know if this is likely or not?

Well I remember Simon Cowell (sp?) from the UK 'Pop Idol' (and the US one now too I think) show here saying that he played the triangle on some records he's produced and he gets royalties, so I'm sure someone as important as Amber singing whole songs will surely get her share.

but i'd figure we'd only really be able to tell if she gets royalties depending on her personal contract (which none of us really know).

There may be a clause that says ME can use her or character likeness for any promotional stuff without having to give her more cash, or she could have the opposite: getting paid per each extra BTVS/ME thing she does. but the songs *are* from the episode so i'd wonder if she would get royalties as well. good question! hehehe

Thanks for the tip.

Hmm, I think finding out about royalties would be most intersting because regardless of buying it or not I am sure we will all have the high quality MP3s in our hands. But if Amber makes a cent out of it, then I would buy it. I would say Aly but poor thing didn't sing much did she :(

Definitely not a lawyer, but I am in the music biz...

I can pretty much guarantee you that Amber will not make a dime off this record. Her work would have been part of her contract with the show.

It's likely that the only person who WILL receive royalties is the one who according to law MUST receive royalties, and that is the songwriter--in this case, Joss Whedon.

Every copy of this album puts money DIRECTLY in his pocket. This is the LAW.

Think carefully about that before buying.

Knowing the lying f*ck that Joss is, I'm sure Amber isn't getting much of a bargain rate, unless the whole thing was her idea. But Joss did write the episode, the lyrics and music...

[/quote:f631179d17] Now wait, it that is indeed the case then why in the world was there the big wait because they had to work through details with all of the actor's representatives. That was what the hold up was supposed to be.

Good to see that the are finally releasing this, I heard it at the Eclipse convention and it had different stuff on it. I guess they'll have to put good things in it as almost everyone has the MP3's already downloaded.

Everyone must make their own choice when buying things. I just want their choice to be well informed. Then they can decide with all the info.

What we know for sure is that Joss Whedon as the writer of the songs will get paid royalties. What is most likely is that the actors will get very little if any payment because it's a recording of an episode, which they have already been compensated for.

As for the release being delayed because the "actors" people had things to iron out, that is not what we heard originally. I remember hearing that the COMPANIES had to iron out things. Meaning, who will cut the cd, who will get how much and whose label will it be on.

I strongly urge you to find out if Amber gets anything from this. If she doesn't, why in the name of the goddess would you want to give Joss Whedon anymore "angry lesbian-knee jerk reacting" money? He has shown us nothing but contempt through this and giving him money tells him we not only tolerate the cliched murder of Tara, but support it with our hard earned "angry lesbian- knee jerk reacting" money.

I have burned copy of the sound track I got on ebay. If someone wants to have it, and they "accidentally" burn zillions of copies, and those copies "accidentally" get mailed to anyone who wants them, that would be a shame. I would even accidentally donate money for postage.

Lisa,

I definitely heard that arrangements needed to be made with all the performers. This makes perfect sense to me. An X-Files soundtrack that contained the voices of the actors was delayed a great deal of time for the same reason.

Well, I'm not in the music buz., but I am a lawyer. I have no idea about whether the performers would receive royalties, but I can make a guess (and it is just that...a total guess) about whether the performers had anything to do with delaying the release. It makes sense to me that they would have to give permission for their likenesses (in this case their voices and maybe photos in the CD cover) to be used. A person's image/voice cannot be used without their permission...it is called misappropriation if it is. This is especially true in the case of those in the public eye - they must protect their "assets" more so than private figures. So, I would guess that everyone involved in the making of OMWF had to sign a release pertaining to the use of their "image" on the CD. If I'm right about this (and God knows I could easily be wrong) and they had to get everyone's permission - could take forever - you know how us lawyers like to make things complicated! :)

Even if it US only it should be possible to order from Amazon US... US CD's are cheaper than Euro ones (esp UK) anyway for the most part so what it costs you in postage will make be absorbed by that saving.

Not that I have any interest in getting this... Gods OMWF was depressing back then - i mean listen to the lyrics (when we just knew that they were splitting up remember that time?) ... Now... *shudder* I don't know why... I just never really liked this ep much. Perhaps it was just that - I already knew too much.

A friend made me a CD of this, so I guess I'm safe from the dilemma of to buy or not to buy. I did like the ep, but--and this is probably not the place to discuss--it drove me crazy insane that there was no built-in explanation of why Willow didn't sing a song of her own. I mean, we all know AH can't sing, but they could have explained it so that it made sense.

Anyway, the time for that discussion is long past, I guess.

well, it's actually rather easily explained. when willow was onscreen she was either in the middle of a group number, and chiming in here and there, minimally as she did, it's reasonable that willow was being brief. or 2, she was being sung to, and its also reasonable that willow would in fact just be there, and be sung to.....plus she was kindof preoccupied doing somethign else. but anyway, it's not so suspicious. plus one could even say, probly in the course of that day willow did sing something more at some point, but they just didnt show us on the screen, because of obvious real-world practicality. i think it made fine enough sense. it's not like willow would literally stand there mute watching everybodyelse burst into song or something. didn't strike me as a big deal.
peace.

I always thought that Willow didn't sing because she was keeping a secret from Tara. If she sang, her secret would be revealed.

Am I giving Joss too much credit? I really don't want to do that.

No, Aly has stated many times that she didn't want to sing and asked Joss for as little singing as possible.

at least it's on a good label out of ole BEAN-TOWN!! ROunder has been putting out great music for decades that the major labels will not touch! good for ole Rounder - i hope Rounder makes some $$$$...these are good people that care about the artists on their roster.

i'm no music biz pro - but i am a player that's been gigging in bar wars for close to twenty years now & i can tewll you this - it's the songwriter that makes the big bucks.
