The Anthony Stewart Head Thread

Postby the literary exterminator » Fri Apr 05, 2002 5:02 pm

There's this piece of ASH news I figured I'd post in the all-purpose all-occasion ASH thread I vaguely remember from the old board, but there isn't one, so I figured I'd start one up. Feel free, PTB, to stick this on the daily thread if you so desire.

Anyway, the new ASH show [i:ca4800deda]Manchild[/i:ca4800deda] is starting up on BBC America soon, so I thought I might give the ol' heads up. It starts airing weekly on Thursday, the 18th at 10 PM EST, and each week's ep replays at 2 AM and 5 AM EST.

The BBC America show page is here, and the schedule for the show is here.

As I hadn't expected this to reach the US for years, I paid no attention to the reviews the BBC viewers on the board were giving it. If anyone cares to share, I'd appreciate it.

It was a nice surprise to see this on bbcamerica.com while looking to see which [i:ca4800deda]Coupling[/i:ca4800deda] ep is airing tonight (the one with the Jeff's 30th birthday ... um ... surprise). It should be cool to see more of ASH than a half-second right before each [i:ca4800deda]Jonathan Creek[/i:ca4800deda] commercial break.

Edited to turn back on HTML after a PTB edit.

Oh god, [i:909d59cbc4] Manchild[/i:909d59cbc4]...it's not what you're used to, I'll say that. [i:909d59cbc4] *shudder*[/i:909d59cbc4]

I wonder how many years we will have to wait before we get this in NZ?

ASH is well worth the wait though.

Yes, Ruth (can I call you that? ... everyone else seems to .. :) ), but is it funny? Is the shudder (I'm assuming *shud == shudder) because ASH plays an icky guy, or because it's not funny and icky to watch? You seem to be pretty solid in the ``sense of humor'' department, so I'm interested to hear what you thought.

Wait ... it is a comedy, right? Or is it some lame melodrama? If it's Dawson's Creek for the over-40 crowd, I'd *shud just thinking about it.

Everyones taste in comedy is different but I'd have to say there was more humour in those old coffee commercials he used to do :\

I watched a couple of eppy's but I was'nt that impressed.
It was a little *sad* in a way. 40- something divorcees trying to recapture their ladhood.
[hang on a minute thats me:) ]
It was quite fun tho' to watch for 'Giles mannerisms' which cropped up every now and then.
Make upo your own minds, but I'm sure it won't take long.

I did catch an episode or two, but unfortunately didn't like it very much. A tad tedious if you ask me..... It seems to lack pace and coherence, but that's just my opinion.

So it's finally made it to the US. Hmm so IF Australia gets it we'll be seeing it in, ohh, about a year. Where they'll put it on at 10:30 at night, not advertise for it and play a couple of episodes before cancelling it! Yay *rollseyes*.
Well I haven't heard anything about what this is like, though it's a little disappointing to hear you saying that it's, to be blunt, crap. Poor Tony.....Please come back to Buffy!
Anyway to the US folks, enjoy!

ooh! manchild is so funny! you'll love it!

but ASH still uses his giles voice... and it's a bit disturbing at first - hearing "giles" talk about the stuff that he talks about in Manchild... lol.

I've only seen the one ep of 'Manchild', and I didn't like it that much. I believe ASH's character is impotent. At one point he also gets to wear a latex diving suit. Which is a change from tweed, I suppose...

I think it's excellent.

There's a scene with ASH posing with his new pipe was priceless!

Though it's kind of hard to associate with characters who are so hugely wealthy.

I liked it a lot - it's a lot more self-deprecating than it seems at first. It's really very clever, and the only people who really have power are the women. But I think people have trouble separating ASH from Giles, which does really annoy me.

I'm a little confused. . .is this an old show ASH was on before he was on Buffy, and we are just now getting it in the U.S.?

This is what ASH has been doing since more-or-less leaving BtVS. It's British, so it's only like 8 episodes per season and has already finished - I think he started filming it just after 'Tabula Rasa'. And now you're getting it in the US, you lucky people. ;)

Postby tyche » Tue Apr 09, 2002 8:42 am

Finally got round to typing this up - it appeared in a British TV mag in February. *blush*
Nothing spoilery for 'Buffy', minor spoilers for 'Manchild':
[b:ea587a4775] From Buffy to male menopause[/b:ea587a4775]
[i:ea587a4775] Anthony Head shot to fame as the Gold Blend man, but it was playing Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer that made him a star. Now hes appearing in Manchild, a new BBC drama thats been described as Sex and the City for the fortysomething man. [/i:ea587a4775]

[b:ea587a4775] So whats Manchild about, then?[/b:ea587a4775]
Its about what makes men tick, in this case men approaching 50. Its also about the child thats in all men and which were reluctant to let go of. All the guys in it [Nigel Havers, Don Warrington and Ray Burdis also star] are wealthy, but it becomes evident that their lifestyle is flawed. It is also about friendship.

[b:ea587a4775] How did writer Nick Fisher come up with the idea?[/b:ea587a4775]
Nick was at some traffic lights and a very flash sports car pulled up next to him. It was the kind of car that boy racers normally driver, but someone a lot older was behind the wheel. That happens in Manchild, but instead of it being laughed at and seen as sad, its okay.
I always coveted a Jaguar XJS in my 30s. But the guys who used to drive them were in their 50s. Thats just a fact of life - you dont get the wealth until youre older.

[b:ea587a4775] Tell us a bit about James, the character you play.[/b:ea587a4775]
He used to be a dentist, but hes always admired Nigel Havers character Terry, a suave stockbroker and wanted to be him. So he lives a little bit in Terrys shadow.

[b:ea587a4775] But doesnt he have a sexual problem too?[/b:ea587a4775]
His problem is partly physical, partly mental. Hes mortified by the fact hes impotent and his attempts to deal with it are very funny.

[b:ea587a4775] Its a far cry from the Gold Blend ads. Do you regret doing them?[/b:ea587a4775]
No. Here they closed a few doors - I was being perceived as a romantic lead, a bit smooth. But when I moved to America, it actually opened a few doors.

[b:ea587a4775] So why did you move to America?[/b:ea587a4775]
The TV roles I was being offered here werent what I wanted, so I sat down with my partner Sarah seven years ago and discussed moving to the States. I didnt want to move Sarah and my two daughters Emily, 13, and Daisy, 10, out there.
Sarahs the most intuitive person that Ive ever met, and somebody whos willing to say All right, Ill be a single parent for however long it takes. I did several roles in the US before landing the part of Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

[b:ea587a4775] What was the appeal of playing Rupert Giles, the Watcher?[/b:ea587a4775]
I leapt at the chance of doing Giles, because it gave me the opportunity to do character acting rather than the standard romantic lead.

[b:ea587a4775] What is Sarah Michelle Gellar like to work with?[/b:ea587a4775]
Shes a sweetie. Whenever the kids came on the set one of the first stops was Sarahs trailer. She always used to say Make sure I get to see them as soon as they arrive. We still call each other occasionally.

[b:ea587a4775] How did your life in LA compare to your life at home in Bath?[/b:ea587a4775]
Theyre completely different worlds. My life here on our farm has always been reality, over there it was always work. Hollywood isnt actually that glamourous. Yes, you go to premieres, but I dont think Ive ever been to a Hollywood party. I had a little apartment in Santa Monica, not a Hollywood mansion.

[b:ea587a4775] Why are you now back in Britain?[/b:ea587a4775]
My apartment was full of pictures of the girls and stuff wed done when they came to see me. I realised that Id missed all the bits in between - their growing up.

[b:ea587a4775] How did you tell them on Buffy?[/b:ea587a4775]
I went to series creator Joss Whedon at the beginning of Buffy series five and told him that I wanted to leave. He said, I dont want to kill you off. Id like you to become, maybe, a recurring character. In fact, Joss and I have had a chat about doing a British-based Buffy spin-off based on my character Giles.

[b:ea587a4775] You and Sarah have opened a centre for dog and horse whispering.[/b:ea587a4775]
Yes. Actually, Sarahs been doing this for years and I try to help out when I can. Acting is a silly world and this seems such a positive thing to do with all that Buffy money.

Interview by Nick Fiaca

Character profile of ASHs character in Manchild:
[b:ea587a4775] James[/b:ea587a4775] - Anthony Head
Wealthy and wayward former orthodontist who seems to have it all. But behind the faade, hes deeply flawed and insecure about his sexual prowess. He has a crisis after failing to satisfy a 23-year-old woman and decides that he needs to take action.

Um, [i:95451b504d] Manchild[/i:95451b504d]... Perhaps I was having a sense of humor bypass that day, because I just didn't find it amusing whatsoever. That whole "middle aged men wearing leather pants and being given a blow job by very young women" storyline kind of put me off. Can't think why. :rolleyes

heehee... ya see, ruth, that's what *attracted* me to the show. lol.

seriously, though... it had it's moments... some weeks it was really really funny... other weeks it was just mildly amusing.

gotta admit though... i was missing my ASH fix so much that i probably would have watched it all it was was ASH sitting on a pile of manure for half an hour every week...

sometimes i'm callous and strange... lol.

For those interested, Anthony Stewart Head is scheduled to appear on "Hollywood Squares" on Monday, April 22.

Implication: since Mr. Head appears to be Stateside, it is logical to assume that he came here to appear in at least ONE of the final episodes of this season of BtVS. YAY!:-D

I wtached the first episode of Manchild, and I have to say, I hated it with a fiery passion!

I don't want to see Giles beeing impotent and talking about his penis! It's...icky.

Plus, I have no interest in the premise of the show. If I want to see midle-aged men trying to recapture their glory days, I only have to go visit my dad and his 23 year old model wife.
