Just getting caught up and I have to say the marriage proposal was the best story so far and that's saying a lot considering the high quality of all your stories.

You'll give them a great future, Sass, even though ME didn't have the imagination to do so. Thank you for that. :)

**Blue77: Everyone loves the magic helicopter *G* And yeah, it would have been nice to see something like this on the show. But, really, that's the concept behind these little bits. It's the "I think it would have been nice to see something like this on the show" series, but "vignette series" really had more of a ring to it *G*

**BoredNow99: Awww, thanks - I'm happy to provide joyous things in the way of W/T Goodness.

**Kieli: Heh ... I adore writing about Lil W/T, but I'm trying to keep as much of a balance as I can manage. Some future stuff, some S6 stuff, some previous stuff, some stuff that's a blatant and self-indulgent AD tie-in, and then the fun suggestions I've been getting (again - haven't forgotten them ... I'm saving them for when I don't have any ideas ... which should actually be any day now *G*).

**KathleenWolf: I love the Scoobies ... the way they love and support each other is integral to the show - and the lack of that is clearly why S4 and S6 weren't very popular among fandom at large ... and I'm going to stop that train of thought before I end up on a rant *G* But thank you - I'm really glad you liked it.

**Scout: Thank you, Scout *G* But, being the schmoopy people that all y'all are, it's not surprising people like the proposal best ;) Of course, I'm schmoopy, too. I really liked writing this one.

**AmberBensonRockzMyWorld: LOL .... at least there's not plotline, so there's no cliffhangers ;) But thank you, and I'll likely get to #11 tomorrow.

**blameburner: *runs over to administer mouth to mouth*

**The Rose24: It's very good to dream *G* In S6, the W/T Dream got so lost ... but we'll find it. We'll always find it. And if these little vignettes can help out fellow kittens just a teeny bit, then I consider it time extremely well spent.

**Karzia: Wow ... thank you for the 'Willowhand' post *G* I am flattered you used it here *G* Congratulations on the new posting level ... and I'm glad my little stories brought up a warm and fuzzy memory for you *G*

Hey you. Sass. :)

One time in a fic that I may be rereading because I've totally decided that it is the real end of season 6 someone who may be you wrote:
Quote:
"When this is over, let's go somewhere," Tara said, snuggling into Willow's arms. "Somewhere sunny and warm and happy where we can frolic and definitely >not< cry. I know some truckers - we could hitchhike."
Care to elaborate sometime? ;)

Because i missed one, I have two wonderful thesaurus entries for you--a different thesaurus, as I am at school, however, here goes.

First, I looked up sweet, and ended up getting nouns that meant clevernes, all of which describe your skill in characterization:

talent, ability, ingenuity, capacity, talents, faculty, endowment, forte, turn, gift, genius; intelligence; sharpness, invention; aptness, aptitude; turn for, capacity for, genius for; felicity, capability, curiosa felicitas, qualification, habilitation.

Then I looked up beautiful, and got:

Enchanting, rich, superb, magnificent, grand, fine, sublime, showy, specious.

So bravo! And I sincerly hope the stupid teachers who make me miss great stories while studying are very sorry. (I just found out my creepy history teacher watched Buffy... weird).

Vignette #11

Postby Sassette » Thu May 30, 2002 9:13 pm

**Autumn: Hey you. Autumn. *G* Well, hypothetically, say - if you were rereading a story that was at one time possibly referred to as 'Answering Darkness', that had a quote such as that in it ... the subsequent happy frolickings would, maybe, appear in the theoretical sequel 'Lingering Darkness', were such a thing to be written by someone who might be me at some unspecified point in the future.

**pikescoob: Heh ... I love how Willow and Tara have the opposite reaction to being nervous. Willow just babbles on and on and on, and Tara trips over her words. Each is adorable in its own special way. Thanks *G*

**tkheaven: LOL ... if a picture is worth a thousand words, that's probably the longest bit of feedback I've ever gotten *G* I'm really glad you liked them.

**Puff: Heh ... yes, she did *G* And as that quote is from Answering Darkness, I should darn well hope it ties in No worries, though ... that actually confused me the first time I looked at it - I was wondering if I'd mentioned the truckers in one of these vignettes. My mind is like a sieve.

**Autumn: You really >did< have me confused for a moment ... I wondered for a moment if I was reading the AD thread, or if I'd put something about lesbian-friendly truckers in here. I'm probably going to eventually ... but the actual trip will be in a sequel. If I ever get around to writing it.

**TX: For Autumn? You really know which buttons to push, don't you? *G* First, Autumn says she considers AD to be her S6 ender, giving me an incredibly warm and fuzzy feeling, then you say I have to do it for Autumn? You shameless hussy. Of course, that's what I like about you best.

**Bookcat: Don't feel bad - I thought I had missed one, too *G* And I'm reasonably sure I'm too young to be senile. But a 'thank you' to you, a 'thank you' to your school, and a 'thank you' to your school's thesaurus *G* And yes, I'm sure your teachers are very sorry that their pesky homework is cutting into your fanfic time.

**Autumn: I'm just not sure what to say to that

Series: Vignettes
Number: 11
Title: Holding Hands
Author: Sassette
Feedback: Can be sent to pink_overalls@yahoo.com
Summary: Willow and Tara stay out too late … if you've read all of 'Answering Darkness', you'll recognize this story.
Spoiler Warning: Season 4 Hush. Set vaguely in Season 4 sometime after Hush
Disclaimer: I didn't create these characters. I do, however, love them, and as they reside in my heart, they belong to me. I'm not making any money off of them, though.
Rating: PG
NOTES: The general overall story here will be recognizable to anyone who has read AD. Actually, the response I got from posting this bit is partly why I figured it would be possible to write the Vignette Series and have people actually like it *G* There are, however, a few changes - mostly an expansion kind of thing.

Holding Hands
Part 11 of the Vignettes Series
by Sassette

"Oh, my God!" Willow breathed out in a panic, her sleepy eyes widening as she looked around at the shadowy park. It had been daylight - very VERY daylight - just a few moments ago. Hadn't it? As if completely disbelieving the evidence of her eyes, Willow checked her watch, squinting in the dark.

No, it was definitely after sunset. Mentally kicking herself, Willow turned to see Tara, curled up peacefully on the blanket, looking for all the world like an angel. A little flutter in the vicinity of her heart as she looked at Tara didn't surprise Willow. In a way, she had gotten used to it fairly quickly. It was a repeatable and observable phenomenon, and as such, she had to take it as scientific fact. Tara made her heart skip a beat.

What that actually >meant< was anybody's guess, and Willow was fairly sure she had a guess, but her mind shied away from the thought. Even as she determinedly didn't think about what having warm fuzzy feelings for another girl really meant, the subject tumbled around just at the edges of her consciousness. In a way, it was as if her brain were a party and while she certainly wasn't talking about it, everyone else at the party was, and she occasionally caught whispers of it as she walked around looking for the cheese puffs.

"I don't even >like< cheese puffs," Willow grumbled, reaching out and shaking Tara gently. She was feeling a little … perturbed at her rebellious thoughts, but that was certainly nothing she wanted to take out on her peacefully sleeping friend.

"Huh? Wha-?" Tara muttered, her eyes drifting open. Disoriented, she looked around, regaining her equilibrium when she saw Willow. If Willow was there, everything had to be all right.

Then reality hit her. They were outside. After sunset. In a park.

"We must've fallen asleep," Willow said apologetically, as Tara's eyes widened.

With a start, Tara got to her feet, looking around and wishing she could just smack herself for being so irresponsible. She knew what lurked in the dark in Sunnydale, but did Willow? Willow was relatively new to the whole Wicca thing, and though she knew about magick, that didn't mean she knew about vampires. She hadn't seemed surprised by the Gentlemen, but that could mean anything. For all Tara knew, Willow had rationalized it away, thinking some lunatics had escaped or something.

Determinedly, her motions fast and sharp, Tara started packing up. "We should hurry," she said quickly.

"You're right," Willow said with a nod, relief washing over her as she helped throw their things into the basket. Obviously, Tara didn't need to be pushed and prodded into hurrying, and she wondered vaguely if Tara had some idea about the darker side of Sunnydale. It wasn't something she could really just bring up … she could just see herself, doing a spell then casually mentioning vampires and seeing if she got a reaction.

Of course, with her luck, she probably would. Tara would turn tail and run out of her life as fast as she was able.

"I-I'll, uhh … carry the, umm, basket," Tara said as quickly as she could, hefting the basket into her arms as Willow grabbed the blanket in a jumbled mass.

"Ready?" Willow asked shortly, hoping Tara wouldn't notice how panicked she was. Here she was, a Scooby who had been fighting demons for years, and she had fallen asleep on a picnic? Stayed out after dark? She didn't even have any stakes or holy water handy. If Tara got hurt, it would be all her fault. And, Willow admitted to herself, her fault or not, seeing Tara hurt would be … just about the worst thing she could imagine.

They started walking quickly, each one grateful that the other was moving so fast. Carefully, but as hurriedly as they could manage, they made their way through the park and back onto the campus, following the paths that lead to the dorms.

Still, Willow's mind turned again and again to Tara, and the new feelings the girl inspired. Or, more to the point, the 'not new' feelings. These were familiar feelings, only more intense, but … they were boy feelings. Well, feelings she had only had about boys before. And her eighth grade english teacher, but that was normal, wasn't it? Just a case of advanced hero worship?

Besides, she didn't even know if Tara was … like that. And even if she was, why would the sweet young woman want Willow? She was silly and she babbled, and too smart and not pretty enough. She didn't even know if Tara was okay with alternative lifestyles at all, let alone living one. Or willing to live one.

"This, uhh … is my umm … stop," Tara said with a little nod. "Y-you should really, umm … w-walk fast," she said, wincing a little at how lame that sounded. "Buffy is, umm … probably w-worried," she added, mentally congratulating herself on her save.

"Yeah, and, umm… actually, why don't I walk you to your door?" Willow said, peering around, trying to see into the darkness. She certainly didn't >think< there were any vampires around, but it's not like she had any kind of special slayer sense or something.

"Oh, n-no," Tara said, shaking her head emphatically. "Y-you've got to, umm … you've got to get back."

"No, I really should walk you to your door. In fact, I insist. This is me, being absolutely insistent," Willow said, pointing to herself, her lips forming a thin line and her brows coming together in a look of pure determination.

"But y-you shouldn't be o-out that, umm … that long," Tara said, her eyes growing wide as she frantically cast around in her mind for something - anything - she could say to Willow that would get her to get back to her dorm - back to safety - right now, and not later.

"I know you haven't seen this before," Willow said seriously. "But this is my 'resolve face'. Absolutely nothing can change my mind once the resolve face is in place. Learn it. Know it. Do not argue with it."

"H-how about, umm … y-you just, umm … spend the night? I-it's late, and y-you could, umm … c-call Buffy. I-I'd worry if you, umm … w-walked all the w-way back to your, um, dorm. By y-yourself," Tara said.

A warm glow started up in Willow's heart, spreading through her chest as a slow sweet smile crept over her face. "Really? You'd worry?" she asked hopefully, then quickly composed her expression and shook her head. "No, not that worrying you is good. No, no, firmly of the bad. And we can't have a worried Tara, so we'll just, umm… go inside. Yeah," she said, the last word almost said to herself as she nodded again.

"O-okay," Tara said, letting out a relieved breath. She detected movement out of the corner of her eye, and she turned her head to look over Willow's shoulders, her eyes widening as a tall lanky man with very pale skin - and, she suspected, no pulse - walked into the light from the shadows. "Run! Mugger!" Tara called, grabbing Willow's arm and pulling her forward, adjusting the basket under her arm.

Years of Scooby training meant that Willow didn't need to be told once, and she started moving, pushing Tara ahead of her to keep herself between whatever was there and Tara. She glanced over her shoulder, her suspicions confirmed. That, she knew, was definitely a vampire. The game face kind of gave it away.

They sprinted across the lawn, not bothering to use the path and making right for the door. They burst through with no trouble, neither one stopping as they raced up the stairs to Tara's dorm room.

Tara had no idea how they had managed to cross all that distance safely - especially with the basket and blanket still in hand - but they had, practically falling into Tara's room after she managed to get it open. The fairy lights twinkled merrily at them, and they both felt a sense of safety wash over them.

As they looked at each other, each out of breath from running away from the "mugger", they burst out laughing for no apparent reason, except the adrenaline coursing through them, and the sheer relief that they were both okay.

"W-what, uhh, are y-you, umm … thinking a-about?" Tara asked, her eyes drinking in the sight of the beautiful face - cheeks flushed, eyes bright, hair tousled - that she spent so much time studying in her dreams.

"Do you think Bert and Ernie were living an alternative lifestyle?" Willow blurted out, then immediately looked like she was so embarrassed she wished the floor would open up and swallow her whole. Tara's brow furrowed in confusion, and she tilted her head as she studied Willow silently.

They had been chased by a vampire and >this< was what Willow was thinking about?

"I guess, umm … they, uhh, could?" Tara ventured uncertainly, eyeing the redhead like she'd never seen her before as Willow blushed. "I-it w-would be, umm, kind of, uhh, cute, if they were?"

"Oh, yeah," Willow agreed. "Not that I think puppets necessarily have a sexual orientation, but if they did … I mean, two guys … one has this thing for his rubber ducky … living together and alone all those years, sharing a bedroom …" Willow prodded, gesturing weakly with one hand and looking a little sheepish.

"Loving y-your, ummm, rubber ducky means y-you're, uhh, gay?" Tara asked, a smile starting in her heart and spreading through her as she watched Willow wring her hands and shift her weight from foot to foot, a frustrated expression on her face.

"I didn't mean that," Willow said slowly. "I mean, lots of people like rubber duckies. Rubber duckies are all … yellowy and happy … and they make bathtime fun."

"Y-yes. Very fun," Tara agreed, nodding. "I, uhh … like the w-w-way they, umm … squeak," Tara confessed, looking down shyly, but not minding that she was stuttering around the other girl. Willow had a way of just waiting patiently as Tara struggled with the words that warmed her, and she could detect no mockery or censure from her.

"Yes!" Willow agreed enthusiastically. "Their squeakage is all … squeaky," she finished lamely, still feeling a little foolish, but a bit better now that it seemed Tara was following her random line of thought.

"W-w-when I w-was, uhhh, little," Tara began to relate, her eyes laughing as she spoke. "My b-, uhhh, the, umm, there w-were some, uhh… little rubber … um, boats? And the duck w-w-as the same, uhh, size, so it w-w-was like, W-whoa! Giant duck!"

"Exactly," Willow said with a nod, giggling softly. In a weird way, she felt like Tara really understood her. It wasn't anything she ever said or did relating to Willow directly, but the way she followed Willow's conversations, going along with the topic no matter how strange and out-of-left-field it seemed. "'Cuz if there were little people on the boat, the duck would be all giant and scary, and they'd think it was like one of those sea monsters they used to believe in when they thought their boats would sail over the edge of the world. I used to leave the boat in the water when I pulled the plug, and watch it get sucked in by the whirlpool."

"I-isn't that, uhh … kind of, umm … mean? To the, errr, tiny sailors?" Tara asked uncertainly, somehow hoping there was more to the story, despite the sailors in question being a figment of Willow's childhood imagination.

"Oh, well," Willow said, scuffing her foot self-consciously and looking down at her sneakers. "I kind of used to have the rubber ducky swim over and rescue them, so the sailors wouldn't be afraid anymore, and they'd all be friends."

Tara laughed, delighted at the story, impulsively taking Willow's hand in hers and giving it a little squeeze, a warm tingle shooting up her arm at the contact of skin on skin. Eyes wide, Tara couldn't look away, the feeling buzzing through her skin taking her by surprise. It was the first time they had held hands since they had moved the soda machine, and Tara had always thought it was the magick they had both gathered.

But it wasn't the magick.

It was just them.

A wave of joy rose up inside Tara, and her laughter continued for completely different reasons. There was a connection there, between the two of them. Something more than magick. She didn't know exactly what it was or where it would take them, but it was there, and it made her happy to know it.

Willow looked up from her sneakers, her eyes meeting Tara's as she smiled shyly, joining in the laughter.

Awwww Sassette this vignette was so sweet and cute. Willow knowing Tara "makes her heart skip a beat", but not yet totally ready to deal with the ramifications of this knowledge, rings so true for Willow in the early stages of their relationship. Loved how both worried about vampires, but didn't want to mention this word in case the other didn't know about the darker side of Sunnydale (ie Tara comments "mugger" to get Willow to run faster to the safety of the dorms).

The whole conversation about Bert and Ernie and the rubber ducky was beyond cute. Tara worried about a little Willow letting her imaginary sailors drown, but having Willow allay her fears with rubber ducky to the rescue was adorable. I truly loved the realization of Tara's (ie after holding hands) that this connection between them is more than mere magic, and with this knowledge giving her a hope for things to come. Lastly, I must admit I have pondered at a time the true nature of Bert and Ernie's relationship. I mean really I think they shared more than a rubber ducky! ;)

Rubber ducky, you're the one. You make bathtime lots of fun!

I have to go dig mine out now.

That was beyond adorable, and the synonyms for adore are:

1. (v.) To take great pleasure in:

• revel

• love

• delight in

• get a kick from (colloquial)

• get a kick out of (colloquial)

• get off on (slang)

• take delight in

I like the second to last one, but that doesn't apply to this part now does it ;-)?

I'm sure my teachers are very sorry about cutting in to my fanfic time. Because, you know, they care so much. (Actually, if I told one of my teachers I didn't do my work because i was reading fanfic, he'd probably let me get away with it. But he's special.)

**The Rose24: Heh ... yeah - early W/T are a whole lot of fun. Part of the fun as far as writing goes is the fact that so little of the development of their relationship happened onscreen ... which was, of course, supremely annoying on the show ... but still, fun for writing *G*

**Puff: Thank you, Puff *G* LOL ... I didn't know they >made< pink rubber duckies. I thought they were all yellow *shrug* Then again, I don't get out much

**Autumn: You're welcome ... I've been meaning to expand on the rubber ducky thing, but hadn't gotten around to it. But yes, the propeller was slightly stuck, so here's a second vignette tonight. There won't be a third, though, because I'm darn tired.

**TX: Thank you, TX ... and yes, it was stuck enough that you get another one. But just one. It's been a long day, and so I'm going to take these other vignette ideas I have and save them *G*

**VampNo12: Heh ... thank you - I'm glad you liked it. And yeah, I think a case can totally be made for Bert and Ernie being gay. *shrug* Then again, I'm a little twisted *G*

**Bookcat: LOL ... have fun on your rubber ducky search *G* And thank you ... as always, you and your thesaurus are muchly appreciated.

A Friendly Little Wager
Part 12 of the Vignettes Series
by Sassette

"I believe, Miss Tara," Willow said with a triumphant grin, "that I just won a friendly little wager."

"But … that's cheating!" Tara asked, her jaw dropped.

"Huh?" Xander asked, looking back and forth between Willow's smug look and Tara's shocked expression, idly spinning a coin on the tabletop in the Magic Box.

"With the what now?" Buffy added, her own gaze ping-ponging between the two.

"Hey - not cheating!" Willow said, holding up her hand and displaying the little rubber ball. "I didn't touch the glass."

"But … I mean … that's …" Tara said, frowning at the clear upside-down glass on the table. "You had to have arranged that," Tara said, a disbelieving look on her face. "He just sat down and moved it immediately."

"What? What did I do?" Xander asked, a look of confusion on his face as Tara turned a baleful glare his way.

"Don't worry about it," Willow said easily. "But you guys wanna' go to the Bronze tonight?"

"Willow," Tara said in a low warning tone.

"What?" Willow asked in all innocence.

"Okay, someone wanna' smack the Slayer here with a big ol' honkin' clue? Or maybe two?" Buffy asked.

"Y'see, I took this clear glass," Willow said, picking up the object. "And I bet Tara that I could take this rubber ball and put it under the glass like so," she said, putting the ball down on the table and covering it with the glass. "And that I would be able to take the ball without using magick, without touching the glass, and without >asking< anyone to touch the glass."

"And Xander walked over, sat down, and picked up the glass," Tara said, frowning.

"Oh, God," Buffy said, breaking into laughter, an unladylike snort escaping her.

"Huh?" Xander said, spinning the coin again.

"Tara, you've been had," Buffy went on, looking at the coin and laughing harder. Willow joined in, her own laugh filling the air.

"Someone want to tell me what the joke is?" Tara asked a little more sharply than she intended.

"Oh, baby, I'm sorry," Willow said, immediately composing herself and looking apologetically at her girlfriend. She really hoped Tara wasn't as mad as she seemed. It was a harmless bet, and it was a funny trick, and it hadn't occurred to her that Tara would be upset. "It's just … I've known Xander forever, and if you put a bright and shiny object on a table, he'll pick it up and play with it. He's a total monkey like that. Absolutely every single time," she explained.

"I do not," Xander said indignantly, frowning at Willow as he spun the coin again.

Buffy laughed harder, practically falling out of her chair. "Oh, God … you put the …" Buffy wheezed, still chuckling. "The coin! Under the glass!"

Willow nodded, grinning widely as Buffy howled with laughter.

"But … it's so shiny!" Xander said helplessly, holding up his hands and gesturing at the coin. "How can I resist the lure of the shininess?"

"So you didn't arrange this beforehand?" Tara asked slowly.

"Nope," Willow said, shaking her head. "It's entirely possible Xander could have sat down, not seen the coin, and I would've lost. I just … y'know … knew that if he saw it, he'd move the glass, and that he would probably see it." Willow shrugged, a sheepish look crossing her face.

"Remind me not to make a bet with you ever again," Tara said ruefully, a slight smile curving her lips.

"So … it was a fair bet?" Willow asked, looking at Tara expectantly.

"Fair bet," Tara said with a sigh, pushing away from the table and standing up. "Meet you at the Bronze?"

"Oh, yes, absolutely," Willow said with a vigorous nod and a wide, pleased grin.

Willow watched Tara walk out of the Magic Box, her eyes glazing over slightly as she took in the way Tara moved, the soft curves of her body swaying gently. She could just watch Tara for hours and hours. And maybe a few more hours on top of that.

"Earth to Will," Xander said, waving a hand in front of her face.

"Oh, umm … Hi, Earth. This is Willow," Willow said sheepishly.

"So what were the terms of this bet?" Buffy asked curiously.

Willow's grin widened even further, her eyes twinkling. "Y'know, I think I'm going to get to the Bronze now and wait for Tara," she said, standing up and heading for the door.

Xander and Buffy looked at each other, confused for a moment, then shrugged, silently agreeing to go along. They hurried after Willow, trying to get her to spill what the bet was all about to no avail.

An hour later, they had a table, half-empty drinks, and were surrounding by dancing kids having fun.

"I still don't think it's fair that you used my love of all things shiny to win a bet with Tara, and then you won't even tell me what the bet was about," Xander complained for the hundredth time.

Willow just ignored him, her eyes wide and fixed on the entrance, her heart thudding double-time in her chest and her mouth suddenly and completely dry.

"Willow?" Xander asked, then looked over his shoulder to see what Willow was looking at. A hot blonde number in a little - no, make that VERY little - black dress was standing in the doorway, looking around. "I don't think Tara would appreciate you staring at other women," Xander went on with a smirk. "Remember the April Bot?"

"I … buh … humina …" Willow said slowly, her gaze fixed.

"English, Will. Try English," Xander prompted. "Because I >know< Tara wouldn't like you going non-verbal at the memory of the April Bot."

"I -" Willow squeaked, feeling very flushed. She downed her whole glass of water, turning her head a little so she could continue watching the entrance out of the corner of her eye.

"Ummm … Xander," Buffy said slowly. "That >is< Tara."

"Wha?" Xander said, his head whipping around. Oh, God.

Tara looked around nervously, tugging on the bottom of the dress to try to cover a little more of her legs. After a few good pulls, she looked down, her eyes widening at the expanse of cleavage there. With a frustrated look, she tugged at the top of the dress, trying to keep it somewhat decent.

Inwardly, she groaned, looking around again. Where was Willow? She was supposed to …

Tara froze, meeting Willow's eyes, even across the crowded room, separated by distance, shouted conversations and a mass of moving bodies, she could see the appreciation and burning want in those eyes. Her breath caught in her throat at the look Willow was giving her - a look she was used to, but only privately. Behind a locked door.

Gulping audibly, her feet propelled her forward, helplessly drawn to those green eyes. After a few nervous shuffling steps, she paused, squaring her shoulders and lifting her head, standing proudly.

"I am Olivia-Newton John in 'Grease'," Tara muttered to herself. "The part at the end where she's at the fair. I can do this. I can do this." With a more confident step, Tara walked further into the Bronze, not noticing the heads that turned to watch her pass, or the gaping stares Buffy and Xander were leveling at her. She only noticed Willow.

Willow was surprised she didn't pass out, she felt so light-headed when Tara's eyes met her own. "Oh … wow," she breathed, her voice full of awe.

"You made her wear that dress as a bet?" Buffy hissed in an undertone, turning a disbelieving eye on Willow.

"You should have heard what she was going to make >me< wear if >I< lost," Willow said absently, waving a dismissive hand.

"Did I wake up in the Twilight Zone this morning?" Xander asked, looking over at Buffy, then turning again to stare at Tara who was walking towards them.

"I have to admit, Willow's got good taste," Buffy said with a little shrug.

"You talking about Tara, or the dress?" Xander asked. "'Cuz here, I'm thinking either one."

"Xander, you should probably stop staring at Willow's girlfriend," Buffy said, casting a look back at her best friend and noting thankfully that she was so absorbed by Tara's appearance she hadn't noticed the Xander-Drool.

"You're staring," Xander pointed out.

"Yes, but I'm staring in a 'straight girl sizing up another girl' kind of way, not in a 'gee, I'd really like to jump her bones' kind of way," Buffy said.

"What?" Willow said, breaking out of her reverie. "You want to …? With Tara?" she practically shouted, the din of the crowd keeping her outburst unnoticed beyond their table.

"What? No, oh, no," Buffy said, shaking her head defensively. "I mean, Tara's great and all, but … I don't … that is, I was just pointing out how >other< people were looking at her," Buffy said.

Willow's gaze turned away from Buffy, finally noticing all the appreciative stares Tara was getting as she crossed the crowded floor of the Bronze. "Well, she's mine," Willow said, a grin crossing her face. Only it wasn't the usual Willow-grin that Xander and Buffy were used to seeing. It was possessive and wild, and Buffy stood up abruptly.

"Xander. Dance?" Buffy said quickly.

"Right. Dance. With Buffy-friend," Xander said with a nod, grabbing her hand and hurrying onto the dance floor.

Tara arrived at the table, slipping onto an empty stool right next to Willow and crossing her legs smoothly. "Hi," she said flirtatiously, tossing her hair behind her shoulder with a little shake of her head.

"Huh … h-… whu … nomina … wow," Willow stammered out, her eyes darting everywhere as she tried to decide exactly which lovely expanse of skin she wanted to study. Closely. With her tongue.

"Are you okay?" Tara asked, her expression bemused as she picked up one of the drinks.

"Uhhh… me Willow?" Willow said helplessly with a tiny shrug.

"Well, Willow," Tara said as if she had never heard Willow's name before. "You want to dance?" She had no idea, really, what had gotten into her - but the way Willow was looking at her, and the way she felt in the little black dress was … it made her more confident, somehow. Normally, she hated attention, but there was something about this whole situation that made her suddenly glad she had lost the friendly little wager.

"Oh, yes," Willow said, nodding eagerly. "Dancing. Dancing good. Dancing, with the close, and the music, and the moving very closely together. Very, >very< closely together. And touching. There has to be touching. Hands have to be touching for the dancing. And did I mention close?"

"Come on," Tara said with a laugh, taking Willow's hand in hers.

I know I usually post long replies, but I just can't get that image of Tara in a tiny black dress out of my mind. I feel like Willow :drool over all those amazing/shapely curves out for open display. Well done you have made me mostly speechless!
