Cold.



Hard.



Pain.



As consciousness began to make itself known in painful abundance, Tara squeezed her eyes more tightly shut, grimacing with the effort. Ow. . . . Taking a deep breath, Tara pushed through the haze of sleepiness, her mind and body rising to wakefulness.



“Wi—” she started, her voice cracking from dryness. Tara coughed, instantly regretting the additional movement. “Willow. . . Sweetie, it’s cold. . . I need some blanket. . . .”



There was no answer, just as there was no forthcoming blanket.



“Willow. . . ?”



Tara’s fingers flexed beside her over a smooth, cold, hard surface. A frown creased the blonde’s forehead as she realized that she did not recognize where it was she was sleeping. Not our bed. . . . Her eyes fluttered, opening slowly, only to close again immediately as a wave of nausea swept over her. She moaned, her head spinning, her body achy and stiff and heavy from. . . falling and drugs and. . . unconsciousness. Unconscious. . . not asleep. . . not dead. . . I’m not dead. . . .



Tara forced her eyes open again, blinking several times in an attempt to focus. Wherever she was, it was cast in darkness, the only light, dismal as it was, came in the form of a flickering orange and yellow glow from different areas in the room. As her eyes adjusted to the dark, Tara could finally make out the ceiling above her: rock.



“What is. . . .”



She slowly turned her head to the right, trying to survey the room, trying to get a clearer sense of where she was. Owww. Again the blonde grimaced as sharp pain seared the back of her neck, quickly spiraling down into her shoulders and upper back. Taking several short, fast breaths, Tara opened her eyes, finding herself staring at a wall about twenty feet away from her. But there was something very, very strange about the wall; the blonde squinted in the flickering light, trying to make out more clearly what it was exactly. The wall was built in squares, each one about two feet by two feet, each identical to the other, each with a smaller-sized square set dead-center.



“. . . this. . . place?”



Tara’s eyes darted to the floor near the wall, discerning two things immediately: one, she was high above it, almost four feet; two, it, like the ceiling, was made from rocks. But, unlike the ceiling, these rocks were carved squares. Cobblestone? Despite further pain, Tara rotated her head again, letting her eyes travel up the wall of squares to the ceiling. She stared hard, but could see. . . Nothing. She let her eyes continue on their path, craning her head to the left to keep up; as her eyes reached their destination, Tara froze.

C, no, it wasn't hard, but it is hard for me to post "unfinished" things, cause I like to stress over every word and read the final product. Hence the length between posts. And, no, Tara's not in a well. . . she's someplace worse! You'll see. . . .

ok, i get it, i myself love your long posts, you know that, i shouldn't be so pushy. bad me. hey look, you can take all the time in the world and i'll wait, really wait for a long post like at the beginning of the story. i really enjoyed reading that night your first post. ah, the good ol' days but i reserve myself the right to continuously and remorselessly harass you without expecting you to post, except when you're ready and feel comfortable with what you post. is that a deal or what?

Kris this part might of been "short", but it certainly "packed a punch"! The tension was palpable as Tara was putting the pieces together (ie realizing this place was "not our bed"), and as the surroundings are becoming more tangible to her, I have a feeling this place is the complete opposite of "homey". I am greatly intrigued to see what happens next, and can't wait for the next part!

Ok is that a preview or like a mini update? Either way it is just mean to leave it on that last line. It's great of course to know that Tara isn't dead but she's in a creepy place and she's bait so the fun is far from over.

I'm still waay back towards the beginning of this story, around the start of Malestrom and , wow. This story is totally awesome, especially in the descriptions of....everything. IT fits so well into the Buffyverse, it's too bad they didn't pick this for the show.
