It's silly, but harmless.

Agreed. Yuri/Shoujo Ai series all have elements "meant for the boys" to an extent IMHO. Even Marimite has a big fan boy following and it is all emotions and no fan service. Go figure.

I've never seen "Marimite," so I'm missing all the vibes.

Mostly it's externals like praying at the Maria-sama statue, senior students handing out necklaces to incoming students, Catholic girls school setting with yuri/shoujo ai relationships etc. If you want to look at Marimite, I recommend ep 11 which is a pretty much standalone as it is a flashback to one of the character's past and is arguably the only ep with actual yuri. If you liked Kashimashi, Marimite has the same more sedate pace and focus on character's feelings.

So looking into Anime-based RPG games and something sparked a thought.

What are all your points of view on "Sailor Moon"? I know we have the whole Neptune and Uranus thing and how is it very cliche, but what else can you tell me?

And has anyone seen or heard about "Brother, Dear Brother"

Thanks all!

For my part, I didn't find the Neptune and Uranus thing on Sailor Moon to be particularily cliched. They certainly got a happy ending at the end of each season that they were in. I've seen the manga of "Brother, Dear Brother" and though it's by the same person as "Rose Of Versailles", I couldn't get into it. It was hard to tell male and female apart in the artwork and it was too overwrought for my taste. The 70's fashions also did not help. Uggh. In any case, Guardians Of Order's "Big Eyes, Small Mouth" (BESM) has basically cornered the market on anime role playing.

Another installment of "Strawberry Panic" (ep 5) and Shizuna doesn't appear to hang all over Nagisa in this one either. It's all Nagisa and her stalker roommate & Hiraki and her stalker roommate & their lowerclassmen groupies. They are trying to have a midnight tea party and end up wearing maids outfits. Fun ep but less interesting than the others. May be we should bring Shizuna back after all and get on with the plot: to pick the new Etoile. I can't believe they are making 26 eps of this as there is hardly any plot.

Ep 6 is much better. You get much more development between Shizuma and Nagisa. It's a more sensitive ep and you get to see Shizuma being less predatory and more human. It was sweet. Ep 5 cracked me up; Chiyo-chan , the poor kid, was simply a mess. Seems like everyone is fangirling everyone else. Too hilarious.

I've been cracking up over the recent eps of Ouran Host Club. For some reason, I just find it so funny. Ray the Animation is darkly good with the recent eps (plus the cameos of Black Jack always help) and even the anime Witchblade series might actually hold my interest for more than five seconds. I'm still reserving comment on Simoun though.

That is good to hear really. I'll check it out sometime.
The game I was reading was HeartQuest a game from Seraphim Guard, http://www.seraphim-guard.com/. It is kinda of neat and had some good ideas. They had a filmography and the made a point to let us know that Uranus and Neptune are NOT cousins.

Ah. BESM. I love that game, it's not a good as Unisystem, but for doing Anime it is perfect.
I converted Willow and Tara to BESM stats before, have a look here.
http://p205.ezboard.com/fedenstudiosdis ... 3666.topic

That is pretty much everything I know about Anime in one post.
And lot of that I learned in this very thread.

I should check out Sailor Moon then I suppose.

Thanks,

Yes, I agree. We're starting to see why Shizuma is the way she is. Something's lurking beneath the surface - and it might not be pretty. I'm also amused by the fact that Nagisa is famous all over the three campuses.

I'm hanging in there with Ouran Host Club and Yume Tsukai. Two other shows that have potential are The Third - Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo and Nishi no Yoki Majo - Astraea Testament. The latter reunites two of the "Paper Sisters" from R.O.D. the TV, Chiwa Saito (Anita) and Hiromi Hirata (Maggie) - although this time Hiromi Hirata is playing a boy.

Agreed on episode 6 of Strawberry Panic. I think we are finally seeing some character develop and hints of the plot. It was surreal to see Shizina and Nagisa in the sam frame without Shizuna hanging all over her but this is to the good. I would rather see them actually develop a relationship, if possible.

On TV I'm just watching Samurai 7, Ghost in a Shell SAC gig 2 and Eureka & which is suprisingly decent given that it combines snow boarding extreme sports and mecha. Go figure. Online it's just SP while I wait for the Marimite OVA and the 13th ep of Kashimashi. I'm not sure on Simoun as I'm finding it awfully confusing and haven't got into any of the characters yet. I'll give it another ep and then decide. On the rental front, it's Gankutsuo and Kannazuki no Miko.

Bonus points to Ouran Host Club for musical accuracy in Episode 6. I recognized the Mozart Sonata the girl started playing on the piano, and thought it was actually for two pianos. I even went to the CD I own with the piece on it and checked. Sure enough, that turned out to be a major plot point, since it was a piece the boy and the girl could play together.

I'm impressed!

Strawberry Panic ep 7 is out and more Spica fun (they are the ones in the cool white unis). There is more with Hikari and the prince of Spica, Amane. Things are starting to heat up as the president of Spica decides that Spica "prince" Amane must compete for Etoile. Shizuma and Nagisa appear but don't get anywhere near each other and it's really more of a cameo for them. Spica seems to have more hard core rivalry within than the other schools IMHO. Also gunning for Etoile is Kaname who looks like a black haired version of Amane and her roomie Momomi. Kaname is the awful stereotype of the evil predatory lesbian that Shizuna has not reached (yet). Still she does has a relationship with her roomie Momomi that is highly sexual but completely consensual (they trade off on who jumps whom). I can't help but think that everyone in this school is issued a roomie who wants to jump her given Nagisa/Tamao, Hikari/Yaya and now Kaname/Momomi (though the latter actual get to the jumping).

The "plot" involves Hikari wanting to give a present to Amane while Kaname plots to "seduce" her and take her out of the running for Amane's Etoile partner. Shizuma and Nagisa are already in the running as Etoile partners but Spica's entry is TBD. Kaname's "seduction" basically consists of her attacking Hikari in the woods and forcing her while Momomi looks on and simultaneously keeping her away from Amane's sending off ceremony (to another horse show). There is genuine suspense here as Hikari bravely fights off Kaname while Amane, Nagisa, Yaya and Tamao all look for her having noticed her absence from the ceremony. Suffice to say Kaname's plot such as it is is foiled.

IMHO Hikari/Amane qualify as the one genuinely romantic couple that we have seen thus far. They are both so shy and yet so obviously into each other that it's cute. I'm rooting for this one. I am feeling sorry for Yaya who is really trying to be supportive of Hikari's thing for Amane but BADLY wants Hikari herself. That can't end happily. Anyhoo best ep so far IMHO.

Heh, you should see the manga. Yaya is much more aggressive though supportive and Kaname is quite the little predator there. Kaname/Momomi are basically the evil womder twins with lesbo power ACTIVATE! Jesus, I almost died at how bad they were.

This is one of the few anime where I enjoy both the manga AND the anime simultaneously. Not like that other anime that shall remain namless *cough*MaiHime*cough* *cough*MaiOtome*cough* *hack*ANYTHING by CLAMP*hack*

I've read chapters 1-6 that are out in scanlation. Agreed, I also enjoy both the manga and anime and that bit with Hiraki and Yaya in the library without a book was especially hawt.

Does anyone have any recommendations for new anime I should check out? My favorites are Miyazaki films, witch hunter robin, wolf's rain, revolutionary girl utena, neon genesis, escaflowne...etc...if that helps. I haven't found a new series/movie to watch in awhile. =(

The last few pages of this thread have some really good suggestions for new anime. If you had read at least the last two pages, you would have your answer.

How fun! I like how they're all in the recording studio together, and have to step up to the microphones and then step back again. And I could even figure out who was playing who in several cases. Thanks!

Yeah Strawberry Panic 8 was alot of fun. It was great to see them have most of the characters doing something. Even Shizuna and Nagisa got a little something and it was even romantic. I also liked the encounter between Shizuna and Amana. They are both competing for Etoile but so civilized and firendly about it much unlike their respective student councils. And in her own subtle brand of romanticism, Amane is still wearing Hiraki's scarf. Poor Yaya's still out there encouraging Hikari with Amana despite her feelings. Still Yaya manages to get rid of Hikari's groupie waiting for them with towels and may well have gotten that shower together. ;-) And a huge matimite vibe with the main character losing a beloved umbrella and hydrageneas everywhere. Thankfully without the Rainy Blue angst. The Umbrella thing was silly but was a nice way to bring them all together. IMHO Spica continues with the coolest uniforms but at least Miator gets out of the black elvira-esque look. LOL.

Just an update on my previous post. Ouran Host Club continues to grow on me. All the guys are too goofy, but I like Haruhi. I'm still following Yume Tsukai as best I can, given that the subs are several episodes behind now. I gave up on Astrea Testament, although I did see one pretty funny scene before I bailed. One character fancies herself as a writer, and she gives the main character a story of hers to read. It turns out to be shonen-ai, involving the main character's best friend/love interest.

Meanwhile, I really like The Third. No lesbians in it, but there's a butch-looking girl who runs around with a sword. It's turning out to be a nice SF adventure story with a tolerable number of silly robots.

Strawberry Panic! Episode 9:

Spoiler:
Tamao finally gets her Nagisa snugglies! :party

Over at AnimeSuki, much was being made of the fact that in the opening scene, Tamao, Yaya and Hikari were all trying to get Nagisa to come out of the closet - literally. Do the Japanese have that same idiom, or are the AnimeSuki folks just reading something into the story that's not really there? :confused

Strawberry Panic 9 was a cute episode with a nice character revelation but no advancement of the main plot, the Etiole contest. Still it was nice to see Nagisa and Tamao together. Yaya and Hikari get a bit that shows that Hiraki may be not as clueless about how Yaya feels as she has been making out. Shizuma gets to be in frame with Nagisa yet again without attacking her and geta a nice bit with someone else as well:
Spoiler:
Shizuma and the Miator council president used to be roomates and are involved in the mystery hence the "no comment". Wonder who used to want to jump who in that roomie dynamic.

I'm not sure how many eps this series has, I've variously heard 12, 24 and 26. If the former, they better get one with the "plot" if one of the latter then they have plenty of time for filler eps like this.

Rose Of Versailles

Postby sam7777 » Tue Jun 06, 2006 10:14 am

I finally finished watching the 40 eps of Rose of Versailles. Despite being a series from the 70's, the animation was not bad. Certainly there are long freeze frames and collages of images but this works for the baroque court of 18th century France where the story is set IMHO. Though RoV is seen as a precurosor to stuff like Utena, it's not really Yuri/Shoujo Ai unless you count all the ladies of the court and Rosalie who are really "interested" in the crossdressing Oscar. RoV owes alot to the Tarazuka (all female theatrical that play both male and female roles and to "Princess Knight" by Tezuka Osamu'.

It's basically the story of Oscar Francoise de Jarjeyes who was born as a girl but raised as a boy by her father, General de Jarjeyes so she could follow family tradition and become commander of the Royal Guards. General de Jarjeyes is a real historical character though Oscar is not given the times a female would not have been tolerated in the military. This Oscar does in time to guard the new french princess, Marie Antoinette who is the titular "rose" of the title Rose of Versailles. The series takes us from Marie Antoinette's arrival as princess to her death by guillotine. It's cover's the highlights of the French revolution from the Affair of the Necklace to the storming of the Bastille.

Oscar isn't either gay or transgender as far as I could see. She's in love with a couple of men and clearly sees herself as a woman who wears a uniform to work and pants off duty. Her devotion to Marie Antoinette is deep but I never got any love vibes. Interestingly, Marie Antoinette for whome there is some historical support for her being a lesbian is played mostly straight here (her affair with Count Fersen is played up). Still we do get some of her historical gay aspects such as her female "favorites" such as the Duchesse de Polignac. Oscar is also one of Marie Antoinette's "favorites". During the Affair of the necklace, Jeanne De La Motte does accuse Marie Antoinette of being a lesbian with Oscar at her trial but the anime plays it off as untrue. Well the verdict of history iremains out on the subject of Marie Antoinette's sexuality IMHO. For my part, I do think Marie Antoinette was a lesbian.

OTOH, the character of Rosalie, Jeanne De La Motte's sister and Oscar's ward for a while is at best bisexual. She really has a thing for Oscar right down to wanting to marry her and smelling her uniform. Sure she gets married off screen but then Marie Antoinette was married without being straight so I think it means little. She certainly shows alot more interest in Oscar than her husband. Rosalie meets Oscar when she tries her hand at prostitution to try to support her sick mother. Oscar thinks it's hilarious to be propositioned by another woman but I supect Rosalie is alot more serious about it and not just to stop from starving either.

Rose of Versailles has never been licensed in the US so you have to find it online. I've also read the manga and the series covers it quite well though the manga has more detail. The manga is also not available in english, I bought the Japanese volumes and used online text translations to read it. RoV is a fun series with a very slight whiff of GLBT. Granted there are characters that don't get a happy ending like Marie Antoinette but I would say that the characters that I considered gay in the anime (which MA is not IMHO) do just fine regardless of the travails of the French Revolution.

Hollywood is now going after anime properties:
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/8790.html
Tinseltown Snags Manga/Anime Properties

Variety is reporting on the progress of a number of Hollywood-based live action movie projects based on manga and anime properties. Some of Tinseltown's highest profile acquisitions including Speed Racer, Sailor Moon and Battle Angel Alita have yet to go before the cameras, but other, lesser known titles are in production or close to it.

Tokyopop's manhwa series Priest (by Min-Woo Hyung) will start shooting in October with Andrew Douglas (Amityville Horror) directing (a little later than originally planned, see "'Priest' Movie Set to Shoot").

Viz's Death Note has already been adapted into a live action film (starring Tatsuya Fujiwara of Battle Royale) by Warner Bros (see "Warners Financing Live Action Death Note Movie"), which will open in Japan on June 17th.

Other key properties in development include Tokyopop's Pet Shop of Horrors, which is being developed by Rogue Pictures, and Witch Hunter Robin, which Roy Lee is hoping to turn into a live action TV series.

The two highest profile projects are Viz's Battle Angel Alita, which James Cameron continues to maintain will be filmed before the decade is out (see "Battle Angel Alita in 2009") and Neon Genesis Evangelion, which U.S. rights holder ADV Films (rather than a Hollywood studio or production company, see "ADV Acquires Live Action Evangelion Rights") is planning to remake as a live action film. While progress on the NGE live action film has been slow since it was announced three years ago, Weta Workshops is involved in the production and has already created concept art, and ADV is busy arranging the financing for what appears to be a very ambitious (and expensive) film.

I can't really say I am looking forward to any of these given Hollywood's track record with comic properties (only partly redeemed by the likes of X-men and Spiderman). I may rent a couple but don't see myself running to the mutiplex. They really have run out of ideas.

Ouran High School Host Club is turning into the surprise of the season. I never would have thought I'd like it, but it keeps getting more interesting. In Ep 9, Haruhi gets courted (literally) by the all-girls school across town. In Ep 10, we meet Haruhi's father and discover that he's a bisexual transvestite. Well, he says he's bisexual, but he also says he won't love another woman after Haruhi's deceased mother, so... :hmm He also works in a gay bar.

Well, he says he's bisexual, but he also says he won't love another woman after Haruhi's deceased mother, so... He also works in a gay bar.

It's the return of our favourite bishoujo-playing seiyuu, Mitsuki Saiga, as Lobelia's studly, female savvy Benio (I just died freaking laughing at the name) who sees right through Haruhi's "disguise". I just died at the animators reference to women for women as "Feminazis" without coming right out and saying the word. The Lobelia women's performance was a) REALLY bad (none of them could sing for shit) and b) REALLY over the top (probably moreso the very dramatic Tamaki....though he looked DAMN good in a dress when he wanted to). Saiga-sensei REALLY needs to find roles other than the bishoujo ones. She'll be typecast forever. Then again, she does them so well It's becoming obvious that the boys are really enamoured of Haruhi (and surprisingly don't mind her drag bit, although the twincest stuff that goes on makes her look tame by comparison) and will go through great lengths to keep her despite her debt.

I watched this episode 3 times because I laughed so hard.

Strawberry Panic 10 was a surreal episode. Final exams angst finally overpowers lust as Tamao actually let's Nagisa study with her rival, Shizuma (for french no less). And Shizuma actually does help her study. Wow. Who'd have thought? We finally find out that Shizuma's attitude towards Nagisa has changed (the sexual harrassment is gone) and the two even have a moment together. These two can now give Hikari/Amane a run for their money in the romance dept. I hope that SP is more than 12 eps or we will never get to the Etoile contest at this rate. Anyhoo a good ep and actually approaching serious.

ETA: The animesuki folks are saying 26 eps and this seems far more likely given the pacing of the series thus far.

ETA2: I have to admit that I cannot get into Simoun after 3 eps. I love the animation and character designs are good but I haven't really got into the characters and the plot is confusing. Like "Last Exile", I think this is something I will enjoy more when I can see it all at once rather than as single episodes separated by time. I was able to see Last Exile by recording and watching 5 eps a week on the now defunct Anime Unleashed. I think I'll wait till it's all out and then try again.

Strawberry Panic! Episode 11 is the obligatory beach episode, but "Girls Gone Wild" it ain't. Shizuma has to stay behind at the school doing paperwork, and Nagisa misses her terribly - a fact that is obvious to everyone except Nagisa. I like how they're developing things. I'm not quite so sure about this collection of mementos that Tamao is gathering, though. :crazy

I find the way they draw Shizuma a bit strange - with her silvery-gray hair and her Etoile shawl, she almost looks like an old lady, when really she's only supposed to be a couple of years older than Nagisa. What's up with that? :confused

The previews for next week look like things will be heating up...
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...

Yeah Tamao was just creepy in Strawberry Panic 11. I liked the way they switched back and forth from Nagisa to Shizuma while they missed each other. Though I do wonder if the Miator school president slipped Shizuma something to damp down her lust. ;-) Yaya and Hiraki get short shrift in this episode but Hiraki is missing Amane. How does a trip to the beach constitute summer schoool? Looked more like a class trip to me. How evil was the Miator school president when she dropped that stack of papers next to Shizuma to work on with a quill no less. Yeah next weeks episode does look good from the promos. I'm certainly curious to see how this turns out.

From what it sounded like in S.P. Episode 10, I thought that summer school was just located at the beach and that during free time they'd get to hang out at the beach. Or is this a translation mix-up? Makes me wonder. *Sigh* I miss the days when fansubs came with translation notes.

Ok, so you all can stop speculating (SPOILER WARNING! Mentar's translation):
Spoiler:
So here's a brief out-of-memory-only summary which isn't all too detailed unfortunately due to my nearly-nonexistent japanese comprehension and the fact that I had to watch the raw in a hurry, without time to rewind. Omni, please get well quickly!

Almost everyone is leaving the Strawberry Dorms for summer vacation. Chio takes the leave-taking from her precious Nagisa-oneesama particularly tearfully-hard, but eventually takes off with all the others. Tamao and Nagisa are left behind, and they throw some stolen glances at Shizuma and Miyuki on the other end of the room. They notice their peeking and eventually come around, with Miyuki telling Nagisa that her French is still too bad, and that she has to work hard to improve. Which means: Extra tutoring lessons.

Eventually Tamao breaks to Nagisa that she has to leave, too. Nagisa is so freaked and upset about this that I wonder what I've been missing - we'll see about that ... in any case, before Tamao leaves, she ties her ribbon around Nagisa's wrist as a soothing Omajinai, lest she study well and may no harm come to her.

Miyuki and Shizuma tutor a struggling Nagisa. Eventually taking a break, she stumbles across Amane, who she helps finding a bucket she was seeking. The two of them tend to Amane's horse and start talking. Here, we learn that Miyuki obviously has a standing arranged marriage she doesn't seem to be all too fond of. Some more seemingly meaningful talk between them which needs to wait for the sub. Eventually, Amane says something which startles Nagisa so much (and which I can't remember) that it causes Nagisa to topple over fall off the fence she was sitting on. Just when Amane was bending over Nagisa, Shizuma arrives at the scene. *shokku*

Nagisa is highly embarrassed, apologizes and rushes back to the lessons. Shizuma gives Amane a chilling jealous glare, calling her with her nickname "Prince Ootori", very different to the friendly talk they had before several times. Shocked and taken aback, Amane notices that Shizuma clearly misunderstood the scene, but can't correct her impression.

The tutoring ended late at night, and as a reward, Shizuma tells Nagisa that she can have a look at the summer festival. It turns out to be only getting a peek at the fireworks. The two of them alone, Nagisa tells Shizuma that strangely, throughout Summer School she was always feeling a bit sad and lonely, even though she was with the others all the time. I refer to Cuddlyness' translation here - Shizuma's quiet reply "So was I" was initially misunderstood by Nagisa (attributing it to the fireworks), but eventually (unless my memory fails me) the shrieks up when she realizes the real meaning behind Shizuma's words.

Shizuma drags Nagisa poolside in a sweeping dancelike motion. There, she realizes the ribbon around Nagisa's wrist and asks what this might be. Nagisa responds that it's an omajinai with Tamao, and Shizuma's face darkens. In a jealous outburst, Shizuma tries to remove the ribbon, but Nagisa resists, obviously confused by it. Shizuma doesn't let up however, and struggling, the both of them fall into the pool. Here (I've commented enough on the lack of realism before), we have another Nagisa-big-eyed-like-a-deer-in-a-headlight scene, but when Shizuma moves in to really kiss her, her eyes briefly widen in surprise before she closes hers and accepts it. It was initiated by Shizuma, but Nagisa didn't resist. Symbolically, Tamao's already-loosened ribbon slips off Nagisa's wrists completely...

Scene change to Nagisa under a hot shower, still dazed by the experience and pondering what happened. Shizuma walks in to bring her towels, and she leaves a red dress for Nagisa to wear afterwards. Then, it's Shizuma showering, and Nagisa looks around in Shizuma's room, noting that this is the first time for her to ever be here. Returning from the shower, Shizuma dons a fairly aggressive dark dress emphasizing her mighty cleavage further with a little sapphire pendant.

Shizuma wants more and moves in on her again. Nagisa in exchange is still confused and visibly scared, backing away and toppling over the bed while doing so. Shizuma moves in and straddles her, capturing Nagisa by her wrists. Wide-eyed Nagisa watches the forceful Shizuma, but she doesn't scream or increase her efforts to break free, rather she gradually retreats into her known half-conscious "I can't move" mode. Then. Shizuma starts to fondle Nagisa, who reacts to it but doesn't resist anymore. We see Shizuma start unpacking the goods, but when she moves in to kiss them, whispering Nagisa's name, a memory of a still-unknown blackhaired Girl hits her, and she freezes in midmotion with a painful look on her face, sweatdrops falling.

Nagisa realizes that something is wrong, seems to "come to" again, sees Shizuma in this scary state and breaks free. Thanking Shizuma for the great day, she quickly makes her getaway, while Shizuma remains hunched over, obviously tormented by memories, barely noticing Nagisa's retreat. Rushing back to her own room still in Shizuma's red dress, she's noticed by the passing Miyuki, who draws the right conclusion. "Shizuma!"

Tamao returns with literally a mountain of gifts, only to find a dejected Nagisa near tears. She's still totally shaken from the incident and barely manages to speak coherently. Tamao notices that her ribbon is gone, to which Nagisa apologizes in a dazed-desperate state over and over again. She doesn't know where she lost it. She's so sorry. She just doesn't know.... and gently, Tamao moves in to hold her comfortingly while Nagisa continues to weep.

----------------------------------------------

Great, great episode. Here, we see both the gentle and yet also the jealous-possessive side of Shizuma, who always stayed the most interesting and complex character throughout the show IMHO. It will be interesting how Nagisa will react to the relevation, because it should be obvious even to her 1) what kind of interest Shizuma has toward her and 2) that something is terribly amiss with our Etoile. Just like she slowly comes to realize that Shizuma is special to her aswell.

Tamao is the other kind of friend. Genuinely concerned about Nagisa in a non-possessive way, but this also limits her own interests tremendously.

It will be interesting to see this play out. In any case, SP clearly ramped up the drama quite a bit. Good!
