Can I recommend Nellfor your viewing pleasure?

Although I am admittedly biased because Jodie is in it, I loved the way that language as a concept is dealt with in this film. My undergrad degree was on this kind of thing, and my dissertation was on children who were brought up with little or no linguistic stimuli. A film where this is given a realistic and sympathetic portrayal, rather than treating children as freaks or experiments is a joy to watch.

Plus there is a wonderful HoYay moment with Jodie and Natasha Richardson!...

I fully agree with you WillowRTaraM1.
I love A League of Their Own, my girlfriend's sister brought me the DVD for Christmas - it's the all time perfect feel good girl movie and its so damn funny. It has got to be one of Tom Hanks' funniest roles -
"Has anyone told you you look like a penis with a little hat on?"
Just fantastic.
And a great cast to boot, Geena Davis at her best and Rosie O'Donnell is a crack up.
Anyone else spot Tea Leoni in a really small role in the final game of the World Series?

and my other current favourite - Master and Commander. Definitely Russell Crowe's best film IMHO. Has barely a single woman in the cast list and yet I still love it...so it must be a good film! It's got action, humour, sadness and some damn fine acting across the whole cast. The characters are people you can engage with and come to know.
You should give it a go even if it doesnt sound like your cup of tea :-D

I know a few people who would disagree with me, but I can't get enough of Josie and the Pussycats. It cracks me up! I could watch it on repeat. When we first discovered it, my roommates and I quoted it non-stop for weeks.

I'm certainly on the Josie and the Pussycats fan-wagon. Been since the movie was released on DVD (never got to see it in theaters). Very few movies make me laugh so consistantly (though Galaxy Quest is another that comes immediately to mind).

You, my friend, have excellent taste in films. At least this time. :-D

And I completely agree about Galaxy Quest. The first time I saw Sigourney Weaver freak out about having a death trap on the ship, I snorted my beverage out my nose I laughed so hard. :lol

I think the scifi-ness in me will always love the movie, "Contact" With Jodi Foster. I had watched it so much that I burned my video tape, so bought it on DVD and still lovin' it! :bounce :applause :clap

Oh yes, Contact is a wonderful movie. It's been a long time since I've seen it so must watch it again. The commentary track on the DVD is also worth listening to.

Belatedly thirding the Contact applause, obviously. Apart from my obsession with Jodie, I was very impressed with Jena Malone. Hated Matthew McConaghy (sp?can't be bothered to look it up, sorry) in this though - completely wooden.

Having just now watched the DVD, I must take this opportunity to praise The Corpse Bride, the finest piece of stop-motion animation I have seen in years. The modeling and motion are perfect, as are the lighting and photographic effects. Voice-casting is deluxe and well-nigh perfect (J. Depp, H.B. Carter, Emily Watson, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, etc. etc. etc.). Even Danny Elfman's style of writing macabre/obsessive music fits the story concept perfectly.

All in all, one has to go back to the glory days of O'Brien, Harryhausen and Pal to find its equivalent. Incidentally, there is an cute inside joke in the film: when Victor (the Groom) sits at a piano, the instrument is labeled as having been manufactured by "Harryhausen". :lol :lol :lol

Lost In Translation. I seemed to be the only person watching to find it humerous and I had never really noticd before exactly how pretty and... uhm... curvy, Scarlott johansson(sp?) is.

I still don't like Bill Murray, though. He irritates me, but even with him in it I found the film entertaining and Tokyo looked like an amazing place! My friend has actually been to Tokyo and they said the film depicted it beautifully.

I know, I know, I'm late to the party again, but I just got round to watching The New Guy.

I am an intelligent woman who has read long books with tiny print and complicated words in them. I have been known to watch films with subtitles and flouncy gesticulations. One really dull weekend I learnt the first 30 digits of Pi.

So why did I love this (in my opinion) badly-acted-by-all-but-Eliza, badly written, badly thought-out film? Because it was funny. I actually laughed out loud, frequently. Particularly when predictable cliches were cleverly turned on their heads. Falling off the Knight In Shining Armour's horse was genius!

And I think that my toes went numb during the swimsuit shopping trip, because all my blood was rushing somewhere else. Damn, Eliza is HOT!

I totally understand, Candleshoe. I love foreign films, non-fiction books, and discussions about corporations in the world. And yet, I can't count the amount of times I've watched Shallow Hal. It's not something I'm proud of, but something I've accepted about myself. :blush

I can understand, while Shallow Hal horrifies me, I can't help but watch it.

Last night we watched Crash and it was SO GOOD. We had had it on Netflix for a couple-three weeks and we tend to not watch Netflix movies (TV shows much more often) but we finally watched it and yeah. Very very very good.

For me, Candleshoe, the scene in The New Guy, is where Eliza D :drool is riding the mechanical bull: OMIGOD, I swear I just about swallowed my tongue while watching that scene. :thud

Candleshoe and GG, I loved New Guy as well.
Eliza was hot (as usual) and I kinda like and respect DJ Qualls for being sooo silly. The guy is odd looking, but is a very talented actor, (immensely likeable in comedy).
He's terrific in drama. I saw him in an ep of L&O:CI recently.
PS.
I originally purchased New Guy on eBay, because of Eliza.
Did I mention how hot Eliza was in it? :-D

I've just had a bit of a heavy duty cinema going day, but I've seen three really good films today and it was worth the back ache of crappy Cineworld seats.

Good Night and Good Luck - pertinent, well acted, just bloody good.

Capote - Phillip Seymour Hoffman frankly rocks!

Walk the Line - Reese Witherspoon and a bit of sass. Sold!

I feel however in the need for some no brain required entertainment... I shall dig out my Tremors DVD I think. Genius!

I have to concur with Walk the Line.

I really, REALLY don't care for Joaquin Phoenix. I mean, really. I've never liked his acting. I've never liked the movies he's been in. Honestly, the only reason I put this movie in my DVD player was to see Reese.

But, DAYUM, Joaquin rocked! I completely forgot it was him. He took me right into the story. The man was Johnny Cash in this flick!

And Reese...ah, Reese. Well, I thought she was just as beautiful as always. It really highlighted her acting chops.

Ginnifer Goodwin (Connie in Mona Lisa Smile) was awesome. Holy shit! Her performance just blew me away. So wonderful.

And everyone in that movie who portrayed a musical performer did her or his own playing and singing! I mean, wow!

Totally LOVED LOVED this movie.

On Sunday Tori and I went to see Madea's family Reunion. It was awesome.

I'm a big fan of Tyler Perry but I have to admit that I went into the movie thinking that it wouldn't be as good as the play (in my opinion "family reunion" is the best out of the series of plays) because I was certain they would cut the spirituality out for Hollywood...but I was pleasantly surprised. They were able to blend the type of comedy Tyler Perry is famous for and also keep the integrity of the message intact. Not an easy order by today’s standards. And I was happy that they worked Madea's pistol into the movie (even if they couldn't show it) :lol

Anyway, I would recommend this movie to anyone.

For people who have seen the plays: you know what it's about, so enjoy. And for those of you that haven't: watch with an open mind 'cause there's a wonderfully positive message to be received. :|

Chicken Little - Okay, it may just be that it's a Disney movie, & they're almost always fun, but, I really did enjoy this movie. It's just a great, feel good, fun for all the family movie.
The typical 'moving' message; a cute little romance; cute, 'real' characters (or, as real as animated animals can be anyway); good songs; & a pig who loves Barbara Streisand - what more could you possibly ask for?
Even the inclusion of a spice girls song didn't ruin my enjoyment.

I walked out of the cinema with a big smile on my face wanting to watch it again.

Hugs

Jeanne, I love those type of movies too...but for some reason Tori absolutely refuses to go and see chicken little with me. (for the life of me I can't figure out why... :lol ) So if I want to see it, I have to go by myself or wait until it comes out on DVD.

Perhaps since you've given it such high praise I could possibly talk someone into going with me. :lol

You should definitely go see it Emms, tell Tori that she'll love it & if she doesn't she can totally blame me for having to go see it. Not that that will be the case, 'cos I'm absolutely positive that she will indeed love it - there's nothing about it not to love. :)

Oh God yes. Moving Castle = love. He's just amazing. All of his animations are worth watching.

A lot of my favorite movies have already been mentioned so I won't bother. But these are sort of old movies but Cinema Paradiso, Le Fate Ignoranti (His Secret Life), Frida (the usage of the actual artist's paintings throughout the film was excellent and Salma Hayek was just amazing. Goodness!), Maria Full of Grace -- I mentioned this movie in a post I made earlier today, Whalerider made me cry sooooo much, City of God, The Motorcycle Diaries.
And as an homage to my slightly Korean-ness: The Way Home.

Oh, wow, yeah, The Way Home is beautiful! I was soooo angry and heartbroken throughout the movie about the way the boy was treating his grandmother. All I wanted to do was go there to her house and kick the boy's ass and give her a hug and be good to her. But...that last scene, when the bus is leaving...and you're thinking that maybe, maybe, maybe he gets it now... Wow. Great movie.

Also loved Whale Rider, Maria Full of Grace, City of God, and The Motorcycle Diaries. I love a movie about complex people's complex lives with no easy answers, like Maria Full of Grace and City of God. I think I'm most fulfilled by a movie that's kind of unfulfilling, you know? When I'm left unsure of how I really feel about the characters and what they've done. That reminds me of Amores Perros, which also has my movie-boyfriend Gael García Bernal. So very pretty, he is.
