Please check its running time. Do you think it's a censored version?

Thanks for the link, Hyo Shin. I just found myself preordering the darn DVD. :grin

I would think it's the uncensored version, 'cause it's the about the same length as the VHS dub I purchased on eBay a couple of months back. It was reasonably explicit in that the "sex" scenes did not appear to be chopped in editing.

I really liked the film and would recommend it highly.

And as for Rachael Stirling...mmmmmmm....:drool :thud

She certainly reminded me of her famous mom, a "Dame."

I asked Acorn Media and just got their answer. :)

Quote:
The 185 minute running time is false. The program is 3 UK broadcast hours (just under 60 minutes each), which comes to 178 minutes. I have the uncut UK DVD release here in my posession, and the running time as listed on the disc is 178 minutes. What may be occurring is that some UK sites may be including the supplemental interview with Sarah Waters and Andrew Davies as part of the running time, as it lasts about 7 minutes or so.

Tipping the Velvet DVD

Postby Willowlicious » Sat Jan 31, 2004 4:41 pm

Just wanted to say that I bought the DVD and my gf and I watched it today and were astounded at how much was cut out of the BBC America broadcast. I'm not just talking about the sex, which was sliced to pieces, but there were also huge chunks of storyline removed. Most annoying was a 3-minute or so (I didn't time it, sorry) section that better established the relationship between Nan and Florence in the third episode. After Nan was allowed to live with Flo and her brother, they showed her spending time with the baby, exploring the neighborhood, having a picnic with the family, growing her hair out and then getting it cut again, sharing glances with Florence, etc. I had TTV saved on my TiVo from BBCA and I compared it to the DVD and NONE of that is in there. There were countless other smaller cuts that diminished the pace and depth of the whole story, as well.

Anyway, I was kind of iffy on the production when I saw it on BBCA, but the uncut version is MUCH better. Fans of the show really should rent or buy the DVD. It's worth it, in my opinion.

Amy, I didn't realize the silly things they cut :happy . I never saw the BBC America version so I had no idea.

Yep. BBC Anerica really butchered it. In some scense they bleep out the F word so badly that they obscured dialogue before an after. I sent them a complaint but alll I got was some drivel about their crafinting content for their audeince. I don't bother with BBC America. That was the first and last thing on saw on that channel.

Morons, they can put up a disclaimer for that stuff and people can watch at their own discretion. Oh well, it´s just another incentive to buy the DVD. The bonus being, you get to support this series and watch is many times as you want.

I also believe Kitty really loved Nan and vice versa, but Kitty made her choice (probably more out of fear than out of lack of love for Nan) and Nan had to move on. I think I've said it before, but I feel that whereas Kitty was her first love, Florence was her true love.

I think I was younger when I read the book and I was definitely cheering on Kitty. I didn't like Flo and was disappointed there was never a reunion for Nan and Kitty. Well, I am older and now and the way the movie played out, I am so glad she didn't reunite with Kitty. I think it's clear that Flo is the keeper. Kitty is sort of the exciting prospect but no matter how much she loves Nan, she's not just not the one whose love is true.

Well I just rented and watched the DVD.

I liked it. It was a good story (my wife said it was 'chick flick' with out any guys).

I was surprised with the humor, it was really good and the three lead actresses were great.

I loved Nan. She had such a pixish quality about her that is easy to find endearing. I was also glad that she chose Florence at the end.

This made me want to check out the book, but I have not been anywhere to do that yet. Might check the library. course me, being the uber-geek I am, thought hmmm...now how can I work this into my current Victorian age game project? ;)

Fingersmith sounds good and I am looking forward to that.

Oh I think you'll enjoy Fingersmith...I found my copies of her books on Amazon for an amazingly good rate. Thus far Fingersmith is my favourite, although I loved Tipping the Velvet....eh, I have to say, the DVD did nothing for me. The cinematography was too distracting and I felt a lot of the pain Nan went through was lost because of it. There was too much focus on the sexual proclivities and much of the good parts of the story were lost. But I am in the minority of those who didn't like the movie.

I might be a bit on the slow side... but then any homosexual shows or any shows that have hints of homosexuality is banned in Malaysia. But while browsing through a few pirated DVD shops in town... one particular shop's library had Tipping the Velvet... i actually flipped past it... then something struck me... and i flipped back to see the cover properly again... and WHOAH... it IS Tipping the Velvet... then I asked for the DVD... the guy was giving me a weird look... but I pretended to flip through other catalogues that they had and didn't look him in the eye. Even at home when i watch it, i have to look behind me everytime a nice scene comes on. After a while i'd have to stop the DVD cos someone comes along and sits there watching it with me. (family isn't gay tolerant). But I made it through to the second episode after Nan meets Flo... I liked the show so far.:peace

I've read all three Sarah Waters books (haven't seen the dvd yet). I must say that Fingersmith totally blew me away. The twists and turns are just... marvelous. A classic case of couples meant to be together. Though Affinity left me slack-jawed too. So I highly recommend all three of them.

Hehe... me too... rooting for Florence all the way... for a few reasons... there's a more realistic relationship (equal loving) plus... she's pretty with her hair down aaaaaaaaaaaaaand she has the same first name as me :lol Kitty was kinda, half hearted, as it was said in the show... you don't know when she would spring up more unwanted surprises. She and Nan made a great couple... but it wouldn't have lasted anyway.

I think Sarah Waters books are banned here as well... I've not seen ANY of her books in the biggest bookstores here.

Oh hot!

Postby Fuzz WT » Mon Jul 19, 2004 2:19 am

Ok, I just wanna say that I bought it and I'm in love with it!

Really, I can't stop watching it over and over again! ( I guess this sound familiar to everyone :eyebrow ) Anyway, I'm so glad that Nan choose Flo. Cuz Flo...oh man! she's so hot. Apart from Rachael Stirling, this Jodhi May is such a scene stealer! ( For me, at least. ) My hormone ding-ding all the time she's on screen! :pinky I never read the book before so when I watched it and Flo appeared for the first time, I was speechless and then she's gone and I was like..."God! please, she needs to get back! They can't just leave her like that!" And hey, look at the outcome!

Ok, really, I love it. I think it's fun to watch. The story is good. Quite a bit rapid for me but hey, it's gotta go with timing and all. Acting is superb. And oh it's very open and handle very well, daring and respectful...

Oh now my hormone tell me to watch it again! :gnome

Hmm, I like it.

It might be a coincidence with the name, but in my newspaper today, in the showbiz section, they were talking about a new film that Imelda Staunton is in. Right at the end they said she would next be working on a 3-part BBC show called Fingersmith, starting filming in September.

TtV was 3 parts too, so fingers crossed! :bounce

All the angels of heaven rejoice and give thanks for BBC Prime, I finally got to see Tipping the Velvet in all its unedited glory.

Little distracting on the camerawork sometimes and it really did need to be longer, but I gotta say that on a gut level I loved it. Particularly the final rose-throwing scene, upon which I had a very satisfying epiphany about Jodhi May...

You know when a character or scene just sticks in your head for years after you've watched the film? Well, two characters that have stuck in my head over the years are Alice of Last of the Mohicans (who inspired non-descript warm fuzzies in my tummy at the tender age of eight) and Clare from Signs and Wonders, probably for similar reasons. Now, as I watched Flo catch the rose, I had a sudden prickly deja vu, before it hit me. Same warm fuzzies, same actress! Not brain surgery for someone less memory-impaired, maybe, but just too cool for words for me. Not to mention the fact that Jodhi May's Clare sells roses to make money for her cult in Signs and Wonders.

Flo of the book and Flo of the Beeb are quite different kettles of fish, but I liked 'em both, and wouldn't have wanted Nan to choose either version of Kitty over either version of Flo, if that makes sense. I thought the perfectly done-up Kitty in her ivory tower of a box and the earthier, literally more 'down-to-earth' Flo captured Nan's choice beautifully. It's the first love/true love dichotomy again. Flo is just there in ways Kitty couldn't be. Nuff said.

cheers,

mo.

Finally saw it...

Postby Big Dummy » Tue Nov 09, 2004 6:30 am

...and I think I might be in the minority. I just wasn't that impressed on the whole. I found Nan's voice to be sooo distracting that even when I did want to take her seriously, I couldn't refrain from mimicking her and making fun. Kitty and Florence were far more appealing to me, and I think those actresses did a great job. I had also just started the book (I'm about half through), and was disappointed at some of the detail that was left out. I realize that you can't include everything in a 3-part mini-series, but I would have chosen some things differently. For example, I would have left in the scene where Nan had to go back and face the nice woman and her daughter Grace to tell them she was moving out. That scene in the book went a long way towards forming my opinion about Nan and the way she handled her life and the way it affected others.

At any rate, having seen the movie finally, I've developed a greater appreciation for the book, which had been relegated to my shelf and was in danger of not being revisited.

I watched Tipping The Velvet when it first showed here in England a year? maybe two years ago? I loved it because it was just SO different! BUT

... my friend just leant me the book and I found that the made for tv version lost some of it's spark, the book was far better although I don't usually like books that are written in first person. I found myself unable to imagine how Sarah Waters described the charecters and just pictured nan as being Rachel and kitty as being Keely... the ending to the made for tv version, oddly enough, was better than the book in my opinion because it gave me more 'closure'

Throughout the whole thing (book and TV) I kept expecting someone to die or something to disapoint me, but gladly it didn't. Obviously Sarah Waters is very talented and I look forward to go through the whole process again with 'Fingersmith'

Kitty and Nan together again! Sort of

Postby Gatito Grande » Sun Jan 02, 2005 11:15 pm

OK, not really. But in watching Othello tonight on Masterpiece Theatre (a modern, de-Shakespearized version), I was excited to see not only Keeley Hawes (Kitty) and Rachael Stirling (Nan) both in the production . . . but actually in each others arms at one point! :applause

GG And boy, did I especially want to see them together, since Keeley plays "Dessie" (Desdemona, get it?), and we KNOW her thing w/ the title character ain't going to end well :happy (but unfortunately, Keeley's and Rachael's characters were Just Good Friends :sigh ) Out

Here's some more info.

Was it mentioned already or has it totally slipped my mind that Rachel Sterling is Diana Rigg´s daughter. Now that I know it is a bit of a duh, quite a likeness. I am not sure what to think of the fact that in the mini filmo/biographies besides their pictures there is no mention at all of Tipping the Velvet. This was I think a bigger thing career wise than some of the other movie/tv accomplishments that they mention.
