LGBT TV Tips

Postby Big Dummy » Mon Sep 08, 2003 5:28 pm

This was in the Television/Movie thread, but a kind suggestion has popped it here.

So, there're a lot of movies that are lesbian-themed that I haven't seen, and I don't tend to rent a lot of movies so I've long existed in ignorance. I decided to change that this month. With the film listing at tvandfilmgrrl.com as my guide, I've made a little list of the lesbian-themed ( I hesitate to say "friendly", cause I haven't seen half of them yet) showing on cable in the coming month, and decided to share it with the Kittens. Detailed info about these films can be found prolly somewhere in this thread, or at the aforementioned site. All times are EST. I've listed as many channels and times as I could, to help accomodate those with different skeds and cable programming.

Happy viewing.

For all Dutch, Belgian kittens and whoever else may get RTL4, tomorrow (sunday september 21) at 10 pm they are airing "The Education of Max Bickford".

No idea if it is any good. I just saw a clip of it, it stars Richard Dreyfuss and apparently it's a series and among other things it deals with his relationship with his (former) friend who is a male to female transsexual. I recall reading about this on the Kitten a few years ago.

Edited to add: This Friday (the 26th) is gay night on Nederland 2. A bunch of interviews with some of our world famous in the Netherlands gay celebs followed by a gay boy movie and it ends with best of all: An ABBA documentary! :party

Done, thanks for breathing new life into this thread. :) I have my private TV guide (fellow kitten concrete) who emails me useful tips about LGBT type of programs, if I am left to my own devices I miss almost everything, but it is nice to share this knowledge with more kittens who might be interested. This is an international thread, European Kittens with useful tips can post too of course, just be clear about which channel/tv station a program is on.

What's NOT On for January

Postby Gatito Grande » Tue Jan 04, 2005 11:50 pm

I just wanted to note, w/ outrage, that the consistently pro-gay TV network TRIO (they even have a weekly gay programming bloc called "The Outzone") has been yanked from DirecTV. :miff

GG If you're a DirecTV subscriber---or even if you're not---contact 'em (though their website, below) and protest! :fit2 Out

"It Girls and Beyond"

Brad defends a high-profile publicist who is being accused of entering into a lesbian relationship solely for financial and personal gain, all the while hiding her true heterosexuality from her lover. Meanwhile, Shore hires Catherine Piper (Betty White) to be his new assistant, and she wastes no time offending everyone in the office. And Denny Crane, initially insisting he try the case solo but reluctantly allowing Shore to serve as second chair, defends a doctor who is being sued for prescribing a drug that has not been approved by the FDA.

Tickled Pink on TV Land

Postby Gatito Grande » Thu Jun 02, 2005 12:11 am

I really recommend this just-in-time-for-pride-month documentary on TV Land.

Not only does it review all the gay subtext of TV past (gay codes, sensibilities, "couples" and camp), but it also has interviews w/ some of the key creators (and gay commentators, i.e. fans).

So much to love:

Paul Lynde.
Carol Burnett.
Wonder Woman.
I Dream of Jeannie.
The Golden Girls.
Cher.
Roseanne.
Cagney & Lacey.
Kate & Allie.
Starsky & Hutch.
Endora from Bewitched.
Xena & Gabrielle.
Willow & Tara.

:kiss

GG Renee O'Connor appreciating Willow&Tara is worth the price of admission alone! Out

[Though beware that there is a *brief* off-topic scene (title character only) from "that :joss show"]

It will be re-run, tomorrow (Fri) at 8PM.

I caught it, GG, and I absolutely agree about RO'C and W/T.

For those who missed it, the show features the clip from Season 4 wherein W & T start talking about "spells", and Tara says "I've been thinking about that last spell we did all day!"

And Renee goes totally :lol and says "Yeah. Spell. Right" and laughs some more. :lol

I got this bit from a Viacom website:

Inside TV Land: Ticked Pink – This one-hour special, produced for TV Land by Linda Ellerbee’s Lucky Duck Productions, takes an in-depth look at celebrated television personalities and characters that gay viewers have either gravitated towards or closely identified with. Among the characters and performers to be discussed include legendary comic actor Paul Lynde, Bea Arthur’s depiction of the title character of Maude as well as her portrayal of “Dorothy Zbornak” in the hit 1980’s sitcom The Golden Girls to the enormous popularity of Xena: Warrior Princess among gay viewers. Premieres June 1, 2005 at 11pm (ET/PT).
-----God bless Linda Ellerbee :clap
Now if I can just find when/ if the show will be rerun.

If you're interested in seeing the above-mentioned scene (Renee O'Connor looking at an early W/T scene---I can't remember which ep this is: The 'I' in Team, maybe?---and cracking up at the subtext re "spells"), you can download it, at this site: http://www.ausxip.com/multimedia/xenavideos.html It's the second download from the top.

GG Along w/ another scene from Tickled Pink, on Xena (actually, there's a whole bunch of downloads re Xena) Out

Only if you're interested in that sort of thing.

On BBC1 tonight at 10.35:

"Drama Connections

This edition explores the filming of Tenko, the Eighties drama series about women in a Japanese POW camp during World War Two, starring Stephanie Beacham. Meera Syal describes how the BBC agreed to a lesbian plot as long as the term was never used."

Oh I used to have a crush on Stephanie Beacham. If I am still awake by then I´ll watch.

Edit: ah that was an early 80´s show. Well the BBC has grown a little less prissy since then. They even aired Tipping the Velvet and the world still has not stopped turning.

Yes in some ways the BBC is better now but Tenko was created by a woman, mainly written by women and with a largely female cast. More than 20 years later that's still pretty unusual.

Sadly it is, I am curious to find out what the Beebs was so squeamish about then, it is just so ridiculous that the word lesbian was not to be uttered back then.

I'm bumping this thread in the hope that a few posters saw last night's episode of "Ghost Whisperer". There was a lesbian storyline with, for a change, a happy ending! :party

Perhaps "they" are finally learning not to use The Cliché. :)

Good news (sorta).

According to a new study by GLAAD, there are more bisexual or gay regular characters on mainstream, prime-time television than ever before.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/2 ... ml?eref=ew

The reason why I say this is only "sorta" good news is that according to the study, none of those characters are lesbians, there are bisexual women, but no lesbians.

Sadly, you don't have to stretch your mind too far to see why that might be: Fellas who think a little lesbian-type loving is sexy, but can't imagine women who don't ever want a little deep-dish dicking. Forgive the raunch. :blush

As GLAAD says in their statement, this is a positive sign, but more work remains to be done.
