I'm fairly new to the Anime genre. For a long time, I didn't think I would like it. But then I got curious and sampled a few things off the USEnet, and what really caught my attention was the movie Spirited Away. Not just because of the fabulous animation, but also because I saw some of the same story elements and style that I put in my own stories - things I don't see in American fantasy stories for kids.

Oh, and there's one other thing that I think makes the topic for this board. I've noticed that the theme of extremely close... friendships... between girls comes up on a regular basis. It almost makes me feel like "The Adventures of Willow and Tara and Their Youthful Ward Dawn" would have been a big hit in Japan. :)

Anyway, at the moment I'm following a series called Uninhabited Planet Survive, which features a red-haired heroine who looks vaguely familiar. Anyone else have any recommendations?

Interesting you should mention this Bob. I have been slowly getting into Anime as well. Maybe something to do with that "hole" you and I talked about a few months back.

Anyway, "Spirited Away" is fantastic. I also liked "Kiki's Delivery Service" also by Hayao Miyazaki (I posted some more about it here).

Another one I watched and really liked was "Witch Hunter Robin". There is some more anime talk in that thread as well.

I have also watched "Ghost in the Shell" (liked), "Akira" (ok, a little overarted to me), "Perfect Blue" (neat story, might have liked it live action), and I did enjoy Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke" and "Castle in the Sky", though not as much as Kiki.

I am always up for new suggestions too. Course I am partial to witches.

Funny thing you should mention W&T as an animated series. I had a similar thought and put together a webpage with RPG stats for it. Here is the page, and the thread here.

Very cool.

I am an anime freak!

I bow down to anime! :bow :bow :bow :bow :bow

I love it! I have loads of anime DVD's and been into it for god know how long. Glad someone finally started up an anime thread, why didn't I think of it :sigh

Anyway, there are a load of anime films and series' that I've watched and think are really great. I even draw anime as a past time, as well as drawing in general.

Made me happy when James Marsters said I had talent when I met him months ago. Going to give him a present of a anime version of him and one to David Boreanaz on Halloween :p lol

I have to many suggestions for films for people to watch, I'll stop now...

Also if there's anyone who wants to check this out, I found a message board here on EZBoard about anime:

Hey Bob! Somewhere, I think on the Cartoon Thread, I made a few anime suggestions (I'm an otaku and proud of it), Tim made some good ones (Perfect Blue simply rocks, Ghost in the Shell is ground breaking anime, wasn't all that thrilled with some of the Studio Ghibli stuff like Spirited Away, Kiki but you MUST see Grave of the Fireflies....it's very haunting). Some other suggestions I have are Noir (which reinforces that whole girl-friendships them you noticed :wink ), Blood: The Last Vampire, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Kai Doh Maru, WitchHunter Robin, Animatrix (you can download the entire DVD on their website), LAIN, ROD (Read Or Die)....I'd posit the Crying Freeman series too but it's got a lot of gratuitous sex and violence and precious little plot (right up there with Wicked City). You could also try Sol Bianca (Good pirate-chick anime) and Haibane Renmei too. I've got a ridiculously huge collection so if you ever want to borrow one to view, let me know. :grin

I'm an anime fan too. To those above I would add Utena, Noir, Cowboy Bepop and Trigun. Noir and Utena have some great sub-text. Cowboy Bepop and Trigun are the two great scifi/western fusions accept no substitutes.

I checked out one episode of Cowboy Bebop. It wasn't for me, but I suddenly understood a certain failed FOX series a whole lot better. :shy

Another series I've been checking out is a new one called My HiME. It too has a red-haired heroine, along with another girl who is pretty much hanging off the red-haired heroine half the time. Unfortunately, the latest episode featured a rampaging horde of evil panty-raid monsters, which pretty much killed my interest in recommending it. :happy For now, anyway.

I'm a fan of Cowboy beebop. Saw the movie for it some time again and thought it was really good. Made you think, and was one of the very few movies where I was on the edge of my seat. So that was a new feeling or movie watching for me lol.

Tim, I love your thread and webpage for a W/T animated series. If only it could come true... : I think I'll have to look into what you call the "magical girl" style, because that's the kind of stuff I'm partial to writing as well as reading or watching.

On that note, I'm once again bringing up a show I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago, My HiME. I still can't give it my full endorsement, because there's too much naughty teenage boy humor for my taste, but I mention it because there's plenty of subtexty stuff going on between two of the three main characters, Mai and Mikoto. Stuff like this, which is the closing shot in the end titles of every episode:

On the other hand, Mikoto tends to act like a cat, and cats do have a way of plopping themselves down on top of people they like during the night, but even so, it's interesting. Besides, Mikoto fights with this enormous sword that she carries around wherever she goes, and what's not to like about that? :p

So if you can put up with the occasional naughty teenage boy gags (Episode #4 is a total write-off because of them), you might want to give the show a try.

Ugh. I'm still waiting for Anime-Keep to release episode 4+ of My Hime. :impatient

If you like that show, you really should check out Kannaduki no Miko. Lesbians and mecha (I'm not a fan of giant robot battles, but I'm really enjoying this show). Plus, there's really no fan service or accidental boob grabbing.

"Fan service?" Is that what that's called? :confused

For some reason, every file I've downloaded through BitTorrent has crashed my system, so I've been at the mercy of the USEnet instead. Static-Subs says they have all the My HiME episodes up through #7. I'm expecting #7 to appear on the USEnet either today or tomorrow.

angel of salvation: Cowboy Bepop isn't everyone's cup of tea but I like it. The movie was excellent. I saw the US Preview in LA a year before it got released. Bepop combines action/Adventure with some of the best music in Anime IMHO.

Lucky you, you got to see it before I ever did :P The music rocked. Wooh, a fan of Cowboy Beebop hehe

I'm not a fan of giant robot battles, either. I've never understood the fascination with them. :confused

Anyway, I did check out this show, and giant robot battles aside it has been interesting - but in Episode 8, the lesbian character (the dark-haired one) turns evil :happy I didn't get Episode 7, so I don't know how that happened.

The final episode of Kannaduki no Miko has been subbed and posted now, so we get to find out what happened to the would-be lesbian lovers, Chikane and Himeko.

And the verdict is...

THE LESBIANS WIN!!! :bounce :party :bounce :party :bounce

Yes, Chikane does turn evil, and she dies, too. Apparently it was necessary. The mumbo-jumbo of the story calls for one of them to sacrifice the other in order to save the world, and Chikane decides to make Himeko hate her as a way of giving her life so that Himeko could live. But Chikane gets to be reincarnated, and the story ends with Himeko sadly waiting for her - but then there's an epilogue where they find each other. The last line is, "And we fall in love again."

Now why couldn't something like that have happened for a certain other lesbian couple I can think of...? :hmm

I have to check this one out. I have to say, I've been stuck in Noir mode lately. I've found about eight easter eggs on the DVDs and the one is a laugh riot and a half! :lmao If anyone wants to know how to find them, PM me. And there are hidden music videos for the ladies as well. I'm fervently wishing that there will be a NOIR II. I just can't let them go :sob

ETA: Bob, I just can't thank you enough for introducing me to My HiME (funky little "Mai HiMe" play on words). I've been laughing my ass off for eight eps now. I think ep 12 is now posted. I've got it if you want it.

I LOVE Mikoto! I especially liked with she claimed Mai...she grabs Shiho-chan's braids, points to Mai and goes "That's mine." ROTFLMFAO! I almost died! I have to agree, Mikoto is very cat-like. The scenes with her flying around campus after eating especially hot things (the ramen noodles at the fair and the curry bread of that poor student's) had me dying laughing! *sigh* I'm such an otaku.

I got Kiki's Delivery Service on DVD for Christmas, and I loved it! In some ways, I like it even better than Spirited Away. And in reference to your comment on the other thread, I think Kiki's too busy with her witch training to give Tomba much serious thought. Ursula may still have a chance, in time. ;)

I think you'll like the episodes that are coming up. The unsubbed versions of Ep14 and Ep15 are out now, and even without being able to tell what anybody is saying, I think they're both real hum-dingers. And if the previews are to be believed, next week's Ep16 features a karaoke costume party - not sure what I think about that yet. :shock

Can I just say how much Tate annoys the hell outta me?? :eyebrow Mai needs to stick with Reito. And I wish I knew enough Japanese to buy the Radio show CD of Mai Hime. It's supposed to have some hilarious clips of Shizuru flirting with Natsuki *LOL*

Oh, I've been an anime fan for more than 12 years so I could recommand lots of titles, but I'm doing my best not to gush on this topic. :)

Noir is a classic in the shojo ai (that's 'girl love' ^_^) community, so is Utena. And Sailor Moon (that's maintext there) aaand... ahem. Anyway, you should definitely check out Maria sama ga Miteru. www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=667 for a review that mentions other titles too (besides, THEM rock :) )

And there is a site that posts scanlations for the manga which looks tons better. www.lililicious.cjb.net/ they post only lesbian-themed mnga so anything there is fair game (oops, they uploaded something new. lol.)

BBOvenGuy, YOU ROCKED MY WORLD. I have Kannaduki no Miko but didn't watch it yet, I've heard rumors there might be like Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito (seen that one?) so I was wary. I didn't even go to the shoujo ai board to check things out, I just didn't wanna know! lol. So now this news springs out on me here. *happy* Now I'll be all over that series. Goddess, this is great news!!! Thanks!

Oh, Stellvia is also a great show, but I don't wanna spoil anything. :eyebrow

I've already got all the Maria-sama ga Miteru eps. I love Yumi and Rosa Gigantea just makes me LOL...she's so butch. And Rei-sama with her petite soeur Yoshino are just soo funny! Rei looks butch but isn't and Yoshino looks femme but SO is not LMAO! It's worth looking at it for anyone who hasn't yet. I've heard about Stellvia but not watched it yet. Mai HiME is taking up most of my time :D

Kieli, Rosa Gigantea and Rei-kun *hehe* are really MUCH beter looking in the manga. Well, all of them are, but those 2 most of all. I was actually disappointed when I saw the anime characters.

Stellvia is very good. The f/f part is a very tiny bit, but very well done. It helps that it involves my fav character though :) Bonus (or is it teaser? ^_^): in the first ep a girl says to the main chara something like that she is the Wendy to her Peter Pan. lol.

Sidenote: great sig from Kannaduki :) And are you on the shoujoai forum by any chance? :eyebrow

Okay, I have no idea what you just said, :p but I'm glad I could be of help. :grin

I checked out the first episode of Maria-sama ga Miteru. It was interesting, but not interesting enough for me to make room in my schedule right now. Maybe later. I've seen the first six episodes of Stellvia, and I'll probably catch the rest at some point. I've also seen the first seven or eight episodes of R.O.D the TV, and am interested in seeing how the rest of it turns out.

I've got the R.O.D. movie but have not yet watched the TV Series. I've got no time with trying to finish all of the Maria-sama ga Miteru eps (there are two seasons plus two DVD specials that are six eps each) and keeping up with My HiME (which has got me on the edge of my seat right now :eek ). I may take in Bleach after this and, of course, I can't go without seeing Ghost in the Shell: SAC.

Cartoon Network ran the R.O.D movie a couple of weeks ago, so I saw it then. The TV series has a completely different set of characters (although I'm told that some of the movie characters show up in the later episodes).

Have you caught the subbed version of My HiME Ep 14 yet? It just came out yesterday. :)
