Haiku

Postby Patches » Thu Jan 20, 2005 2:05 pm

In a random bought of insanity, I've signed up for a poetry course (writing, not study - gulp). Here is my first attempt at Haiku since my university days.

~~~~
Chemical wasteland
Edible oil tops my bowl
Strawberry surprise
In fields they go wild
Strawberry peaks on sweet lips
Blondes also have fun
The sign says open
Good things await through the door
I leave with my coat
On a sunny day
The park is filled with children
A mother laments
Titan’s Sirens call
Three billion dollars answer
Homeless die hungry
Patches, your poems are great!! I love the couplets, the haiku, the longer poems. Now I wish I'd come here sooner.
Thank you for sharing them.
Hey Guys,
Yvonne, SJ, Skittles, BV - many thanks for your kind words.
These next few are Tanka (5-7-5-7-7 syllable structure); until this week I didn't know what Tanka was, but it's kinda fun to play with and write.
Ages Worn
Pebbles on the sand
From rocks ages old they’re shaped
Tides smooth rough edges
They collect upon the shore
Secrets of ages no more
Childhood’s End
When I close my eyes
There’s no place for me to hide
All alone I weep
From memories buried deep
Torment fills my endless sleep
Drip to Torrent
Endless dripping sky
From the top of a mountain
Tiny droplets form
Into a raging torrent
Smashing houses far below
Self-Punishment of Law
Postby Patches » Thu Jan 27, 2005 9:37 am
Self-Punishement of Law
Stupid, depraved, licentious kid;
What you have done, the laws forbid.
They scream, they rant and rave at me.
Into closets, I ran and hid.
Have you no shame! Why can’t you see,
Evil’s intent does snaps at thee.
Safe in darkness I stayed alone;
Denied myself, was never free.
And so it was, my darkened home,
Body bereft and turned to stone.
Away I went no more mayhem;
Image of self, to darkness thrown.
For all my life those words condemned,
Dreams locked away by fear of them.
Those words they whisper in my head;
Living in fear, foul laws of men.
(little note: this follows a similar rhyme structure to Frost's, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"), except for the last line.)
Peace!!
A Villanelle
Postby Patches » Tue Feb 01, 2005 6:24 am
Just for the fun of it.
Ages Curse on Youth.
        Hurry, hurry, I have to pee!
        I’m giving you just one last chance.
        How dare you smirk and laugh at me?
        Up creeps your age and soon you’ll see.
        Outside the door, you’ll do the dance.
        Hurry, hurry, I have to pee!
        You’ll wet your pants I guarantee,
        I’ll stay in here and watch you prance.
        How dare you smirk and laugh at me?
        You stupid, rotten busy-bee;
        Products Attends you will romance.
        Hurry, hurry, I have to pee!
        Warm water trickles down your knee.
        Stop showing your damn ignorance,
        How dare you smirk and laugh at me?
        Ha, ha, ha! I’ll ignore your plea,
        For mocking my countenance.
        Hurry, hurry, I have to pee!
        How dare you smirk and laugh at me?
Inquisitors’ Prisoner February 2, 2005
Rage is my shield.
Touch not my soul.
Evil will yield.
Satan’s dark field,
Dungeon’s dank hole,
Rage is my shield.
Skin flayed and peeled,
Cindered like coal.
Evil will yield.
Truth was concealed;
Mercy they stole.
Rage is my shield.
Their lies revealed,
Made me extol,
Evil will yield.
In death I’m healed
Angels console
Rage is my shield,
Evil will yield.
Rage of Angels
Rage of Angels, weep with me.
Mercy on bended knee to Evil;
Ordered hunger, solitude grows.
Justice for the common man,
Gratitude for a nickel given;
Pain tears at his belly.
War’s words rob us of Peace.
History casts long its shadow,
The face of God denied.
We roll in avarice and ecstasy,
Ignoring the Hand that needs us,
The Soul that begs for shelter.
Rage of Angels, weep with me.
Mercy on bended knee to Evil;
Ordered hunger solitude grows.
These were two assignments I did for my poetry class: We were to write a poem (Inquisitor's Prisoner) using one word from each column. The second poem (Rage of Angels) came out of the entire list.
Rage                Solitude        Mercy                Peace
Order                Ecstasy        Pain                War
Justice                Evil        Hunger                History
Common        Gratitude        God                Angels
An experiment with "sounds"
The Poet's morning after
February 5, 2005
Lub-dub, lub-dub pounds my heart,
Rushing, gushing, blood buzzes brain,
Gurgle, growl, gurgle, goes my gut.
Snap, crackle, pop, my joints wake up
Whoosh! Head get light, dizzy spins
Fizz, fizz, fizz, antacid bubbles hiss
Glug, glug, glug, empties glass in three gulps.
Pop! The aspirin bottle top.
Hell's Furies shriek and rattle in my head!
Ping, shudder, thump, water pipes rumble,
Splash, pfffst, showerhead sputters,
Thumping into tub, hot water tumbles,
Shuffle, creek, shuffle, my feet start to move,
B’leachch! goes my tummy, vestiges of last night's groove,
Yacked in toilet.
The formatting works better in a word doc; the "" should line up to form a straight edge; the dots at the begining of each line are just there to enhance the visual effect here on the KB, as the program removes all but one space.
Olympian Gods: Reduced to Camp
Apollo’s baroque;
Woe-begotten, “XENA!” yells Zeus.
That's all for now.
Sonnet
Postby Patches » Sun Mar 20, 2005 9:10 pm
This next is untitled. It's not quite a true sonnet, as the rhymes structure is "ab,ab; cd,cd; ef,ef; g,g" but I think the meter is correct.
Sorry for the "double" post, but this poem pretty much rates an "R" - a bit of fun from the usual doom and gloom... :)
Untitled Love Sonnet
From eyes coloured by Neptune’s great expanse,
Love whispered on waves gently rolls toward
My waiting heart, expectant of the dance.
Eros plays music drawn by Terpsichore.
Heartfelt desire, unsated love’s romance;
Soft touches trace, mouth kisses flesh adored.
Inside sweet lips and folds my hands advance,
Luxurious silk yielding my reward.
No Gods above Olympus can enhance
My joy, copious slick, and wet I ford.
Promethean-like fires burning, entrance;
Lips part and swell; desire craves love’s reward.
Till night turns to day, then back into night,
Eros will guide love’s sweet, wet delight.
Some structured poems
Postby Patches » Tue Apr 05, 2005 7:18 pm
Thoughts comments, welcome
Distribution: no thanks - just for the KB
Just a few selections - traditional disciplines.
23-03-05: Pantoum:
Blinded
Blinded by hatred and fear
When anyone I loved came near.
Drove them away without a thought
The battle lost, we never fought.
When anyone I loved came near,
I closed my eyes, no more to see,
The battle lost, we never fought.
Is that the answer to my pain?
I closed my eyes, no more to see.
In boxes cold emotions fit;
Is that the answer to my pain?
I cough and gag, while walls I hit.
Tried so hard to make things right;
Drove them away without a thought,
And now life ebbs into the night,
Blinded by hatred and fear.
~~~

23-03-05: Pantoum:

Trillium’s Wild Day

In the wild, they grow.

The first day of spring,

Marked by brilliant white,

And verdant green; the trillium.

The first day of spring,

Washes away winter’s slate gray,

And verdant green, the trillium

Explodes into bloom.

Washe away winter’s slate gray,

And harkens to Nature as She

Explodes into bloom,

On a sunny warm day.

Errant fields of mud and frost

Marked by brilliant white

Bring to life the forest where

In the wild, they grow.

~~~
Villanelle:
February 7, 2005
Life, a drain trap.
....... Gurgle,
.......... gurgle,
............. gurgle
Today a man died
He took his life
Wife and child cried.
Nowhere could he hide
Soul filled with strife.
We don’t abide
Pain tears, truths collide
Edge of the knife
Anguish denied
He chose this we chide
Anger is rife
Locked him outside
We loath suicide
Flutist played fife
Guilt pushed aside.
Today a man died
He took his life
Wife and child cried.
~~~

Shakespearian Sonnet

Daymares from the Night

Out of a darkened place the daymares flow,

From dreams into reality, they seep.

Unfettered, rage like madness they bestow,

And feed upon the soul from slumber’s keep.

In dreamscape’s webbed darkness the nightmares live;

Into your waking hours, cruel fragments fly.

Shearing apart the soul, they do not give

Reprieve from pain, denied by molten cry

Whispered echoes do bind with heavy chain

Where in daylight truth tears with silent screams

That now in sunlit hours, they take domain,

Lost memories confined no more to dreams.

They feast upon the fears that come with night,

Bursting through dreams, devouring the light.

~~

Oh-and now for a few things on the lighter side:

PetrarchanSonnet

Whispered Love’s Romance

From eyes coloured by Neptune’s great expanse

Love whispered on waves gently rolls toward

My waiting heart; desiring it’s reward,

Parted swells drip, expectant of the dance.

You come to me and whisper love’s romance;

Desire passion’s touch, kisses much adored,

Yielding luxurious silk, my reward,

Inside sweet lips and folds tender advance.

Promethean-like fires burning, entrance,

Blazing hedonistic delights excite

Supple soft flesh such sweetness does invite.

No Gods above Olympus can enhance

For Eros does guide love’s sweet, wet delight

When night turns to day, then back into night

~~~
Piggy Bank
I have my piggy bank;
        It really turns my crank,
        To see my brother pout;
        Great rotten nasty lout.
I saved my pennies bright;
        He doesn’t think it right,
        While I have lots to spend,
        His money’s at an end.
I’ll go on rides galore;
        Eat candy but before
        He catches up to me,
        And ties me to a tree,
I’ll promise him a treat,
        A kite or something neat.
        But secretly it’s true,
        He doesn’t have a clue,
Every dime I’ll have spent;
My money, every cent.
~~~

Shakespearian Sonnet

A Little Something With My Coffee

Okay Lady, you’re next, what do ya want?

Just give me a minute while I decide—

Maybe a bagel, or a fruit croissant?

I’m trying to think, what’ll feel good inside.

Would you like an espresso coffee drink?

Oh my, the latest book on health it says—

Line’s getting long, please now, what do you think?

Don’t ever drink the stuff of Juan Valdez.

How ‘bout a nice cup of lemon ice tea?

You have such choice; how can I be certain—

Oh PLEASE, lady, c’mon, what will it be?

I’ll have that young man behind the curtain.

When asking a question, one should beware

Exactly what respondent will ensnare.

A few acrostics

Shelter Me Forever April 11, 2004

Standing on the border of oblivion;

Hitting fracture, the world slides to stop;

Ever reaching, never finding,

Lacuna.

Tomorrow’s but a shadow of yesterday’s present;

Evanescing, floating, diminishing into nothing;

Respite for a soul lost on the border of oblivion.

My throats constricts with choices made;

Enter, exit; down dark steps lights fade.

Forever is the promise of today,

Or a lie of yesterday,

Requited upon the air above and below;

Eventide has come and gone,

Vibrations of time, oscillating into tomorrow,

Energy spent, taking one last step.

~~~
Hint, never use a word with the letter "V" for an acrostic - LOL
Acrostic: Sirens April 11, 2004
Trade winds gust this day of spring.
Rough seas carve Island ring;
Adventurer’s warning unheeded.
Vicissitude, then sailors pleaded.
Eloquent was their cry,
Lustful before they die,
Entering into uncharted graves,
Resplendent on glittering waves
Sirens in their beauty sing.
~~~

Acrostic - Evanescence unbound April 11, 2005

A prestidigitator of words,

Mystical perception,

I long to be a poet;

Antigone unchained,

Promises of future’s past,

Overburdened soul;

Evanescence unbound

Traveling life’s road.

that's all for now.
