~Chapter Six-a~
~*~*~*~*~*~
"I told you Orlando, I can’t leave this weekend, there’s so much going on around here that I need to take care of," Willow sighed and leaned back in her swivelling office chair. She was supposed to go for another photo shoot for Fall weather, but had to cancel due to her doctor’s appointment that following Monday. Both Willow and Tara had yet to tell him and everyone else about their baby news.
Hanging up the phone, the redhead sighed and closed her eyes.
"You look tired," Tori knocked lightly on the door and smiled softly.
"Just frustrated," Willow smiled and waved for the brunette to come in. "What can I do you for?"
"I was looking for Tara, but I couldn’t find her anywhere, it’s a Friday so I figured she’d be working late, but she’s not."
"She’s actually out with Hadley and Anya, shopping for healthy groceries," Willow grinned and sat up a bit. "Anything I can help you with?"
"Well," Tori hesitated but took a seat on the edge of the desk, "it’s Dawn," she sighed.
Willow gave a concerned look and frowned. "Tori? What’s up?"
"She’s just, she thinks I’m going to break up with her because I’m in college now," the young adult bit her lip.
"Did you let her know that you have no intentions of breaking up with her? You aren’t breaking up with her, are you?" Willow moved her laptop and leaned against her desk, giving Tori her full attention.
"No!" Tori scowled. "I have no intentions of breaking up with her, but it’s like she’s not believing me...I don’t know what else to do or say to convince her."
Willow heard the sadness in her sister-in-law’s voice. "I’m sorry Tori, she’s probably just insecure."
"But why? Doesn’t she trust me? Doesn’t she know how much I love her?" Tori broke down and allowed the tears to fall freely. She crumpled into Willow’s embrace and sobbed. "I don’t get it," she sniffled.
Willow felt helpless. If Tori had already tried to tell Dawn that things were good between them, then there was nothing she could really do. "It’ll be okay," she whispered.
Tori drew back and smiled shyly. "I’m sorry Will, I don’t mean to be like this with you."
"No sweetie, it’s fine. We’re family and I wanna help."
"Anyway," Tori took a deep breath and smiled thankfully at the model. "I have to go and pick up Dawn, I’m taking her out for dinner then we’re going to that Evanescence concert."
"Oh," Willow grinned broadly. "Have fun!"
"Thanks," the brunette smiled and hugged Willow once more, "and thank you for listening to me."
"Anytime."
Tori left and Willow sat back in her chair when the back door opened. Getting up from her seat, she walked into the kitchen. "Hey, back so soon?" she asked Tara and Hadley.
"Yea, Hadley said she wasn’t feeling well and I think we’ve got enough fruits and veggies to last us a month," Tara said and blew hair out of her face. "Honey, let’s go and get a warm bath ready for you okay?" she kneeled down in front of Hadley and kissed her forehead.
"Mommy, can you read me a bedtime story after my bath?" The little girl asked, her eyes heavy with exhaustion.
"Of course baby girl," Willow ran her fingers through blonde curls. "Want me to bring Brady up too?" She watched Hadley nod slowly and then Tara picked her up, kissing Willow on the cheek softly.
"I’ll be down in a bit to get you," Tara whispered, moving Hadley upstairs.
Willow nodded and frowned. Hadley looked so tired and drained. Feeling useless for now, Willow started to put the groceries away and then turned on the kettle to boil water for tea or hot cocoa.
~*~*~*~*~
"My heart hurts," Hadley cried softly, leaning her head back for her mama to wash her hair. "Mama? Why is it hurting?"
Tara bit her lip and shook her head. "I don’t know sweetie, we should maybe get you to the hospital."
Hadley never said a word, she just stayed there, wishing her parents could make it all go away.
"Willow!" Tara yelled from the bathroom as soon as she watched her daughter’s eyes close.
Willow came bounding up the stairs and stopped at the doorway. "Baby?" she knelt down beside Tara and grabbed a towel.
"Something’s wrong," Tara whispered. "Call the ambulance, I’ll get her dressed."
Willow nodded, scared to death, not knowing what was going on.
"Come on Hadley, wake up for Mama," Tara whispered and sighed with relief when the tiny blonde opened her eyes. "Stay awake okay? We’re going to get you dried off and dressed."
Hadley nodded and allowed Tara to dry her off and get her dressed. "What’s wrong mama?" she asked, frowning a bit when she saw tears form in her mama’s eyes, her heart sank a little.
Tara blinked and put on a brave smile. "Nothing baby, let’s get you all warm," she noticed Hadley’s blue tinged skin.
Willow came back in the room and started to help with drying Hadley’s hair. "They’re on their way," she whispered.
Tara looked at Willow with scared and saddened eyes. "Thank you," she mouthed.
When the paramedics arrived at the Rosenberg-Maclay house, they did a check up on the little girl, writing down notes and finally turning to Willow and Tara. "I’m Jordan," a young man smiled. "It seems that Hadley’s blood pressure is rather low and her oxygen dropped a bit, making it hard for her to breathe."
"Why? What’s going on?" Willow asked, her hands gripping Tara’s a little tighter.
"I don’t know for certain, but it seems that she may have a small hole in her heart, it’s nothing too serious, but it’s best we get to the hospital now so she can be carefully monitored and the doctors can check her out," he gave them an assuring smile before heading back to the vehicle.
"Mrs. Rosenberg-Maclay?" Another paramedic came up to them and shook their hands. "I’m Greg," he smiled. "Hadley needs to be taken to the hospital now, if you two wish you can ride with us, or follow...either way, we’ll meet you there."
Tara remained strong for Hadley as she and Willow hopped into the back of the ambulance vehicle. She held Hadley’s hand and sung her a few chords, keeping her calm as well.
Willow was in shock. Things like this don’t just happen out of the blue right? She thought they would’ve caught something like this during those x-rays they did last year from Hadley’s previous accident. Shaking her head, she felt a tiny hand touch her wrist.
"Are you okay?" Hadley asked.
"Yes, I’m fine," Willow smiled and kissed Hadley softly on the forehead.
Hadley smiled back and squeezed Willow’s hand. "It’s okay to cry," she whispered.
That’s all it took for Willow to break down. Being pregnant and then finding out that Hadley has a medical problem and she was scared, her emotions were all being released. Bending her head, she let it go softly, allowing Tara to hold her as they cried together.
~*~*~*~*~
Hadley took a small fit when they tried to do some blood work. She winced but then felt no pain after the needle was in. She smiled when the nurse gave her a lollipop for being such a good girl.
Tara sighed and shifted in the waiting room chair. Willow curled up next to her as they watched Hadley play with a puzzle. "Had, sweetie, are you tired?"
Hadley nodded but remained seated at the table doing her puzzle.
"Why don’t you lay in between us, until the doctor comes?" Willow smiled when Hadley finally complied and snuggled in between her parents. "You’ve been awfully quiet," she whispered to the small blonde.
"Scared," Hadley whispered back. "I want to go home," she pressed her face in the crook of Tara’s neck and cried.
Tara felt a lump rise in her throat and held onto her daughter tightly, whispering soft words in her ear, stroking her back and placing kisses along her temple.
After what seemed like forever, Willow was aware of a doctor heading towards them. She looked over at Tara, who was sleeping with a sleeping Hadley in her arms.
"Are you Hadley Maclay’s mother?" The tall man asked, showing his friendly smile.
"Yes," Willow said without hesitation and looked over at Tara. "She’s the mother too," she whispered, leaning over to gently wake up the sleeping blonde. "Baby, the doctor is here."
Tara awoke slowly, blinking her eyes. "What time is it?" she whispered groggily.
The doctor looked at his watch. "Just after midnight," he looked at his clipboard. "You’re Tara?"
Tara nodded and wiped her eyes before clasping her hand in Willow’s.
"I’m Dr. Freedom," the man smiled and shook their hands. "I went over Hadley’s chart and it seems that she’s been living a pretty healthy life so far."
"What went wrong?" Tara asked, stroking her daughter’s hair.
"Nothing," Dr. Freedom smiled warmly. "Hadley was born a healthy baby, however, in some cases, these heart defects and diseases don’t form until you’re a young child or an adult even. The x-rays show that your daughter has a small hole in her heart, which can be fixed with procedures," he pulled up a chair and showed them a chart of different heart diseases and defects, "I would like to do an echo-cardiogram on Hadley and see what exactly it is we’ll be dealing with."
"You mean, she’ll need an operation?" Willow’s eyes went wide.
"Not exactly," the doctor smiled and tried to calm them down a bit. "How about we get Hadley set in a bed for the night...she’s needing some oxygen and then we’ll discuss this as soon as she’s all set up," he stood and grabbed some forms from the desk. "You’ll have to sign these admission papers and the nurses will get your daughter settled in as comfortably as possible."
Willow and Tara nodded as they waited for a nurse to come by with a stretcher. They watched their sleeping daughter get wheeled into a room.
"Don’t worry, we’ll see her in just a few minutes, everything will be okay," Willow kissed Tara softly, giving her all the comfort the blonde needed. "She’s a strong little girl."
