Hey BB thanks for the update, I really enjoyed the poetry especially the last one. I liked the images that it created. I'm so glad that Willow is going to wait for Tara, although I wonder if it will come as a bit of a shock to Tara when she gets back :) Thanks for the update and as always I am eagerly awaiting the next part.

The BIG HONKIN' ANGST WARNING is still in effect. Please stock up an provisions such as tissues accordingly. Anyone suggesting stocking up on chocolate, too, would not be accused of crazy talk.

Um, this update got really, really long on me. I considered splitting it up into an a and b, but I think it would have messed up the flow. I was really liking the Riley-Tara dynamic, so I decided to explore it a bit (as opposed to the Riley/Tara dynamic, which would just be blasphemy, as well as sick, twisted, and wrong). So, you'll find this update complete, though I will have to put it up in two posts.

Special thanks to Tulipp for helping me out with this... and for being my own personal cheerleader. Those splits are coming along great, BTW. ;)

A few replies...

***Wolflord - 5 bounces? Why, I am honored, Wolfie... especially considering you broke your own "no smut, no 5" rule. ;)

***tommo - Ah, Ruth, thank you for that. Sometimes I think poetry is the best way to convey an emotion.

***ExtraFlameyWT - Yeah, things are going better on a lot of fronts right now. It's just been a hard few weeks. But thanks for your continued support.

***areslei - Yes, Willow will wait... unfortunately, waiting is no longer the problem.

***Puff - You know, you're the first one to mention the fact that it might just shock Tara to find Willow still in her room. Well, this update will answer that little (or very big) question.

Okay, so with that said... this update ends with a cliffhanger. Fair warning.

"Of course I lied, you idiot," Walsh said smugly. "I knew damn well that you wouldn't have the stomach to do what needed to be done. There is only one Falasian Crystal in this dimension, and it can only be used once, so we need to squeeze every ounce of power out of the donator that we can. And that includes the witch's soul."

"No! You... you... you can't!" Engleman sputtered. He may have done a lot of nasty things for the military, but he refused to be a party to murder. "I... I won't let you!"

Walsh's lips curved into the cruelest smile Engleman had ever seen. "Ah, Doctor Engleman," Walsh said, shaking her head. "I thought you'd say that. Such a shame."

Engleman's eyes widened in confusion. Then they widened even further as a searing pain ripped through his chest.

Then Engleman fell to the floor, dead.

Riley nodded and then turned to Forrest and said, "Forrest, you go with Hunt and Bishop." Forrest nodded and ran off to meet up with his new teammates. Riley turned back to Tara, handing her one of the shock rifles. "Tara, you're with me."

Tara nodded, accepting the weapon and checking it like a pro. Riley smiled.

"Ready to go a-huntin' fow bunny wabbits?" Riley asked in a passable Elmer Fudd impersonation.

"Ba-deep, ba-deep, ba-deep, that's all folks," Tara answered, taking the safety off her weapon.

Riley smirked. He liked his new partner already.

"Move out!" he ordered the group.

And they headed out in search of Adam.

************************

"I'm sorry, Willow," Tara said. "I really have to go."

Willow just nodded, unwilling to trust her voice not to crack.

"I don't know how long I'll be," Tara said, backing up towards the door. "I might be gone all night, so you might as well go home. I'll call you when I get back."

"Promise?" Willow asked quietly.

"I promise," Tara said sincerely. "I love you, Willow."

And with that, Tara was gone, leaving Willow standing in the middle of the room. Alone.

*************************

Willow didn't know why Tara was afraid, but she would find out. She would wait. She would ask. She would demand. She would love.

But she wouldn't give up. Not without a fight.

Willow rose from the desk chair and walked over to the bed. The only light came from the fairy lights and from the moon casting its soft glow through the window. Willow climbed onto the bed and curled up in the center.

She loved Tara, and Tara loved her.

So she would wait for her love to return.

Part 17

"I can't believe we couldn't find him... it... him... whatever," Riley said, slamming his gun onto the counter.

Tara didn't say anything. She set her own gun down next to Riley's and waited for him to continue. Tara had always thought that sometimes it was just better to not say anything, and to just let people find their own words... in their own time.

"Damn it!" Riley shouted. Then he exhaled deeply. He turned to Tara, an apology in his eyes. "Sorry. I don't usually swear like that. It's not polite."

"It's okay," Tara said sincerely, smiling. "I'm frustrated, too. I mean, we were out there for eight hours, and... nothing. Not a trace. Yeah... I'm definitely frustrated."

Riley raised his eyebrow slightly underneath his floppy hair, though other than that his facial expression hardly changed. "Yeah, you look frustrated, you know, with all the throwing of things and steam coming out of your ears. You really have to learn to keep your emotions in check," he said in mock seriousness.

Tara laughed. "Sorry. Just... a lot on my mind at the moment," she said quietly.

Riley started to say something, but was interrupted by Walsh.

"You two are the last to report back in," Walsh said calmly. "I've already sent the others home to rest. There's no sense in wasting our energy right now. It'll keep for a few hours."

"But he's out there, somewhere. God knows what he could do while we're... resting," Riley said angrily. He hated the idea of what could happen - who Adam could hurt or kill - while they did nothing. "We need-"

"What you need, Agent Finn," Walsh said curtly, "is to go home and get some rest. Sleep for a few hours. We'll regroup around noon, come up with a new plan. I'll need you fresh and ready to go." Walsh paused and looked back and forth between Tara and Riley. "Both of you."

Riley relented, nodding. Tara nodded as well. As much as she wanted to go back out and find Adam, she was more concerned about Willow. She needed to go home, shower, and then call the redhead. It was time to explain - everything.

Tara hadn't had much time to think while they had been hunting for Adam, but when she had... she had quickly realized that she couldn't keep the truth from Willow any longer. It wasn't fair to Willow. It was hurting Willow. It was making Willow think Tara didn't love her, didn't want her. And Tara couldn't sit back and let that happen. She just couldn't.

She still didn't know how she was going to explain - to Willow, to Walsh. No, that wasn't true. She knew how to explain to Willow. She would simply tell her the truth - the whole truth. Willow would probably hate her for it, but it needed to be done.

As for Walsh... well, Tara had no idea. She was more certain than ever that Walsh was hiding something, planning something, and she still had no clue what it was. And it scared her. It scared her not for herself, but for Willow. Willow was in danger - Tara could feel it. And Tara didn't know how to stay on Walsh's good side once she told Willow the truth, so that she could find out what Walsh was planning for Willow.

But... that didn't matter, not for the moment. One problem at a time, Tara-girl, she told herself. One foot in front of the other. So first, she would tell Willow. And then... well, she'd figure that out later.

"Report back this afternoon," Walsh said. "Oh, and Riley... do not reveal Tara's status in the Initiative... to anyone. Especially not the Slayer. Adam, yes. Tara, no. Understand?"

Riley paused for a beat, then finally nodded, though he didn't like it one bit. Walsh turned and walked back to her office, closing the door behind her.

Tara grabbed her duffel bag, which had her street clothes from the night before, and she and Riley headed out.

It wasn't quite sunrise, so they weren't too concerned about being noticed in their camouflage fatigues. The early morning air was brisk since the sun was still mostly down and now that they weren't running around chasing down Adam, but it felt good.

"I'm sorry," Tara said quietly after a few minutes. They had been walking back towards the dorms in silence - Tara to go home, Riley to go see Buffy and fill her in on Adam. Actually, though Tara didn't know it, Riley had decided to walk her home first, before heading out to see Buffy. That way she'd have a chance to explain, or just to talk, if she wanted. It was obvious to Riley that at that moment, Tara was the loneliest soul in the world, and in desperate need of a friend.

Plus he really wanted to know what in the heck was going on. And what it all had to do with his girlfriend.

"About what?" he said casually, in his usual, easy-going, Midwestern manner.

Tara didn't answer right away. She just kept walking, looking off toward the rising sun. They had spent the whole night chasing Adam, chasing evil, and now... the sun was rising, as it always did. No matter how badly the night ended, the sun always rose the next day. It gave Tara hope.

"About everything," she finally said. "I never wanted to lie."

"I believe you," Riley said sincerely.

"Really?" Tara said, looking at him with more than a little surprise.

Riley laughed lightly at her surprise. "Tara," he said, looking directly into her eyes, "you're not the lying kind. That much is obvious. I know a liar when I see one, and you're no liar."

God, he really is a boy scout, isn't he? Tara thought approvingly. But...

"But I did lie," she said, looking down at the ground.

"So tell me why," Riley said gently. "Why is your agent status a secret, even from the rest of The Initiative? What's your mission?"

Tara took in a deep breath, and stopped walking. Riley pulled up along side her and waited.

"I joined the Initiative two years ago," Tara started to explain. "My family life was... not good. After Mom died, it was..." she trailed off, shaking her head. Even now it was still hard to talk about.

Riley put a hand on her shoulder and gave a little squeeze, reassuring her. Letting her know that it was okay, that she was safe. He led Tara over to a nearby bench, and they sat down.

"My father and brother were cruel," she started up again. "And for me, there was no way out. Until one day Maggie came along, and changed everything. She took me away, trained me, gave me something to fight for. She showed me how my powers could be used to save people. She showed me how it was okay for me to use my powers at all."

"Powers?" Riley asked. "You're a witch, right?"

Tara nodded. "A powerful witch, actually," she said with pride, and yet more than a little humility. "But my dad... he didn't like it. He hated my mother's power, and he hated mine. So he... lied. He convinced me that the power was... that it came... that I was..."

"Tara, it's okay, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," Riley said gently.

"No, I need to say this," Tara said. She took another deep breath. "My father told me that I was a demon."

Riley looked at Tara in shock. If Tara's a demon, then I'm the King of Portugal, he thought.

"It wasn't true, but I believed him," Tara said with tears in her eyes. "I was so lost, so in pain... and I believed him. He said that the demon would come out on my twentieth birthday, and that I had to stay home and let him help me so that it wouldn't come out."

It was obvious to Riley what her dad had been up to. "It was his way of controlling you," he said simply.

Tara nodded. "Of course I didn't know that then," Tara said. "I lived in fear for so long, and then... Maggie came and brought me into the Initiative. I was so scared to tell her about the demon, but eventually I did. I thought she'd... but she was great. She checked me out, ran tests, and told me I was clean. No demon."

"But you didn't believe her, did you?" Riley asked, though it was more like a statement than a question. It seemed logical to Riley that Tara wouldn't have believed something good about herself, when for so long she had been made to believe the worst.

Tara bit her lip and shook her head. "So a few weeks later, Maggie brought me a piece of paper written by my dad. It was a confession of sorts. It explained everything - how there was no demon, how he had lied, how he just wanted to control me... everything."

"Professor Walsh got that for you," Riley said, understanding.

Tara nodded. "I didn't ask how... I didn't need to know. All that mattered was that I had been unsure, and Maggie went back and got the truth from my dad, so I could move on."

Riley just nodded, realizing the depth of Tara's pain - and the resulting depth of her gratitude to Walsh for saving her from that pain.

"Anyway," Tara said, shaking off the memories, "I joined The Initiative, went through the training, developed my powers, and became an agent."

"When did you come to Sunnydale?" Riley asked.

"The beginning of this school year," Tara responded. "I came here to start college, and..."

"And?" Riley prompted when Tara didn't finish.

"And," Tara took her cue, "Walsh brought me in to investigate witchcraft on campus to ferret out potential threats. You know, bored college kids dabbling in dark forces, getting in over their heads, that kind of thing."

"What does that have to do with Buffy?" Riley asked, not understanding where this was heading.

"Buffy?" Tara asked, equally as confused. "What are you talking about?"

"Professor Walsh said not to reveal your status to anyone - especially not to Buffy," Riley said. "I just thought that-"

"Oh, no," Tara interrupted, "this isn't about Buffy at all." Now Tara understood. Riley had thought Tara's mission was about the Slayer.

"Riley, Walsh sent me undercover to investigate witchcraft," she said, waiting for Riley to catch on. It didn't take long.

"Willow," he said simply. Tara nodded.

"Maybe I'll change my look, or cut class. You don't know! And I'm eating this banana, lunch-time be damned!" - Willow, Dopplegangland

Part 17 con't.

Tara proceeded to fill Riley in. She told him how she had first seen Willow at the Wicca group she had been sent to investigate, about the connection she had felt. She told him about the Gentlemen coming and going to find Willow to do a spell and the laundry room, and how they had had such power together.

Then Tara told Riley about how, when she had reported the events to Walsh, the professor had wanted her to see Willow again, to investigate the redhead and see if she was a threat. Basically, her mission was to befriend Willow and spy on her.

Tara waited for the recriminations, but they never came. Riley just listened to her.

Something struck Riley she listened to Tara's story. It was a little thing, really, but he knew it meant something. Whenever Tara was talking about the past, in those painful early days in The Initiative, she called the professor Maggie. Now when she talked about the professor, Tara always called her Walsh. Riley wondered if Tara even noticed it.

The something else struck Riley.

"That was right around the time I told Professor Walsh that Buffy was the Slayer," Riley said, thinking out loud. "After the Gentlemen."

Tara nodded, having surmised as much herself. "That's what I thought, though I wasn't sure until just now."

"What do you mean?" Riley asked curiously.

Tara peered at Riley intently for a long minute. This was the time, the moment when Tara had to decide just how far she could - would - trust Riley. If Riley was being up front with her, then he could be an important ally against Walsh. If he was playing her... then all would be lost.

Tara hated to think in those terms, to be looking for an angle when considering whether to trust someone or not, but... she had to. For Willow. To protect Willow, Tara would do anything.

Still... the truth was that Tara desperately needed someone to talk to. She had been holding all this inside for months... the deception, the suspicion, the love warring with her duty. There was a sad irony in that - loving and being loved by Willow had made Tara finally not feel so alone, yet in many ways during the last couple of months, Tara had never felt more alone in her life.

Tara had always trusted her instincts when it came to trusting people. Yet her recent experience with Walsh had thrown everything completely out of whack, though if she were honest about it, everything had been out of whack for a long while.

Before coming to Sunnydale, Tara had lost so much of herself. Even in the dark days with her family, Tara had never lost her sense of hope, her faith in humanity, her ability to dream. But in the last year, Tara had lost so much of that. A lot of it had to do with... no, she wouldn't think about that now. It didn't matter anyway, it wasn't the point.

The point was that up until a couple months ago, she had trusted Walsh implicitly... until Willow. Could she trust her instincts now, with Riley? Should she trust what her mind and heart were telling her, that Riley was her friend?

Was it worth the risk to Willow?

It seemed like forever while Tara thought about this, though really it wasn't more than a couple of minutes. But it was thinking of Willow that finally brought Tara to a decision. Willow had taught her how to hope again. Willow had restored her faith. Willow had brought dreams back into Tara's life. Willow... would want Tara to trust Riley. To trust herself. To believe.

Finally, Tara spoke, her decision made.

"Willow explained to me about the Slayer and the Scoobies," Tara explained. "But I didn't report any of that to Walsh, not right away. I didn't want to say anything until I had at least met everyone."

Riley cocked an eyebrow, as if he wasn't buying Tara's explanation in the slightest.

Tara shrugged, then said, "Well, that was part of it. Truth is that I also wanted to protect Willow."

"From what?" Riley asked.

"From everything," Tara answered simply.

Riley nodded, his eyes crinkling with kindness in the corners, and Tara continued.

"Nevertheless, Walsh never told me about the Slayer, either," Tara said.

Riley's brow furrowed. "That's... strange. Buffy's been working for The Initiative for a while now."

"I agree," Tara said, "it is... strange. Especially considering that Walsh had to figure that at some point you and I would run into each other and I would find out you were an agent."

Riley's eyes widened. "You mean..."

"Exactly," Tara said, answering the unspoken question. "I didn't know you were in The Initiative until that night at the Bronze, when you told me."

Riley was stunned. "I don't get it."

"Neither did I," Tara responded. "So that night I went to Walsh, to try and find out what was going on. I have to admit, when you first told me at the Bronze, I thought you might be spying on Buffy and Willow and the rest."

"I would never..." Riley started to say, then trailed off as a flash of grief crossed Tara's face. "I'm sorry, Tara-"

"It's okay," Tara said quietly. "I did what I did. There's no denying it."

Riley nodded, and Tara went on.

"Anyway, I asked Walsh if you were an agent, and she said yes, but... it was weird, Riley. She... she was so calm about it. And she didn't really say anything. She just... waited," Tara said.

Understanding dawned on Riley. "She was testing you," he said, his voice full of a kind of disturbed awe.

Tara nodded. "Then she asked me what I would think if she told me you were spying on Willow."

"What!? I wasn't! I'm not!" Riley shouted. He didn't like the idea of the professor ordering Tara to spy on anyone, but especially not Willow. Truthfully, he didn't like the fact that Tara had agreed, either, but he was reserving judgment until he got the full story.

"I know, I know," Tara said soothingly.

"Why would she say that?" Riley asked, clearly upset.

"Think about it, Riley," Tara said, her voice not containing the slightest hint of sarcasm. She led Riley through the thought process. "You said it yourself. She was testing me. She wanted to know if I was still loyal to her... or if my love for Willow had changed that."

Riley looked at Tara in confusion, not understanding. Had she just said...?

"Riley, I'm in love with Willow," Tara said, her voice thick with emotion. "More than that, Willow's in love with me. We're together."

Surprise was evident on Riley's face, but that surprise was soon replaced by a delighted, and slightly goofy, grin.

"I should have realized... the way you two look at each other..." Riley said with a touch of amazement. Then, with complete sincerity, he added, "That's great, Tara."

Tears sprung into Tara's eyes, and the blonde agent couldn't help but throw her arms around the farm boy from Iowa, grateful for his wonderful reaction and support. Riley hugged Tara back, and they both started laughing. Joy and honesty had just bound these new friends together.

Riley stood, offering Tara his hand to help her up, which she accepted. After a quick squeeze, Riley let Tara's hand go, and they continued on their trek back to Tara's dorm.

"You're the first person to know," Tara said, her voice taking on a bittersweet tone. "Well, except for Willow and me, of course."

"I guessed that," Riley said.

Tara smiled weakly. "But no one else knows... not even Walsh. Especially not Walsh."

Riley stopped walking, and lightly took Tara's arm, halting her as well. "Tara... what's going on with Professor Walsh?" he asked, looking straight into Tara's eyes. "From what you've said... she's up to something. And I can't help you unless I know everything."

Tara sighed, then nodded, grateful to have Riley on her side. "You're right. Problem is I can't figure out what Walsh is up to. So far, she hasn't even really done anything," Tara said. "I mean yes, she had me spy on Willow, but that sort of made sense - at least at the beginning. Other than that, it's just been... little things. Her behavior, her reaction when I told her about you being Initiative and Buffy being the Slayer and all that, the little lies and omissions..."

Tara trailed off, and started walking again. Riley followed.

"I just... I have a bad feeling. Very bad," she said. "I'm scared for Willow, Riley. I'm scared that Walsh wants something from Willow, something that will hurt her. And I have to find out what it is."

"So I take it, then, that Willow still doesn't know you're Initiative?" Riley asked as gently as he could. He pretty much already knew the answer based on everything Tara had already said, but still... the question had needed to be asked.

Pain sliced across Tara's face. "I wanted to tell her, Riley," Tara said, her voice almost pleading. "I was going to tell her, but..."

"If you tell her and Professor Walsh finds out, the professor will pull you off the assignment and even worse, won't trust you anymore, so you won't be ale to find out what's really going on," Riley finished for her.

"Exactly," Tara said quietly.

"I get that," Riley said. He grew quiet for a moment, then said, "Honestly? It's hard for me to accept all this. I mean, I do accept this, but... Professor Walsh has been a mentor to me. I owe her a lot."

"So do I. She saved me from my family, Riley... from a life I don't know if... she saved me, trained me, gave me a new start and a purpose. I owe her a great deal," Tara agreed, understanding where Riley was coming from. "But there's just... something. Everything inside of me is screaming that there's something wrong, but I can't figure out just what it is."

Riley thought about that for a moment. Yes, it was hard to believe that Walsh was up to something bad, especially when they had no idea what that something was. And yet... Riley could see it, now that he was really looking. He had always trusted Walsh, but still there had always been something there, nipping at the back of his mind. Some little kernel of doubt that Walsh was who and what she appeared. He had always dismissed it - it's not a soldier's job to question his superiors, after all, but now...

"You have to trust your instincts, Tara," Riley said. No matter what doubts he may have had about Walsh's intentions, Riley knew with perfect certainty that he trusted Tara. There wasn't a bad bone in her body, he could feel it. So if Tara thought Walsh was up to something, Riley had to believe that it was true. And he had to help.

"I know," Tara agreed. She stopped them both, peering intently at Riley. "So what are your instincts telling you?"

"That I should trust your instincts," Riley said without hesitation. "That I should trust you."

Tara smiled gratefully, and they resumed walking.

"I have to ask you one thing, though," Riley said.

"Why did I do it?" Tara suggested, knowing this question was coming, and that it deserved to be answered. Riley nodded.

Tara walked along, gathering her words. Finally, she spoke.

"From the moment I first saw Willow, I knew there was something special about her. She had this light, you know? And she had power, too, but I didn't really even think about that right away. Then the Gentlemen came, and I discovered just how powerful she really was," she explained. "And that should have made me want to investigate her, to do my duty. But all I could think about was seeing her again. Not because of my assignment, but because I wanted to get to know her, to spend time with her. Because I couldn't imagine not seeing her again."

Tara paused, and Riley just walked along silently, waiting.

"When I finally reported to Walsh all that had happened, and she got so interested in Willow and wanted me to see her again, it bothered me," Tara said. "Here Walsh was, saying how Willow could be a threat, and all I could think was, 'Are you crazy? Willow couldn't possibly be a threat.' But I had only just met Willow, so I shouldn't have been thinking that at all. My only thought should have been about my mission."

"That's not true," Riley corrected. "What did I just say about trusting your instincts? You have to go with your gut, and let me tell you, I think your gut is right on the money when it comes to Willow. There's no way she could be a threat to anyone."

Tara smiled a little. It was obvious Riley cared for Willow as a friend.

"Anyway, Walsh said I needed to keep investigating, see what Willow was capable of," Tara continued. "When I hesitated, she suggested sending someone else, and I told her no, that I would do it. I just had this overwhelming urge to protect Willow, you know? And I was afraid that someone else would screw it up, would see a danger in Willow that didn't exist. And..."

"And?" Riley prompted once again.

"And... honestly? I was jealous. I know it's ridiculous, but... Walsh suggested this one agent from San Diego, Agent Wheton. Skanky bitch."

The last two words were mumbled under Tara's breath, so Riley almost didn't catch them. Almost. He started laughing.

Tara smirked. "Anyway, I just didn't want anyone else near Willow. I figured if it had to be someone, it might as well be me. At least that way I could protect her."

"So then what?" Riley asked.

"Well, we got together and did some spells. Nothing too major," Tara said. "Actually, most of the time we just sat around talking, getting to know each other. But the reports I gave to Walsh... I omitted a lot of things. I told her about the basic spells and stuff, but I didn't tell Walsh about how close Willow and I were getting. I wanted to just tell Walsh flat out that Willow was no threat, but..."

"Something stopped you," Riley suggested.

"Yeah. Something was bothering me, even way back then. For a while I thought maybe it was just the lies, especially because I was falling in love with Willow, but I realized that wasn't it," Tara said. "It was that I didn't trust Walsh, and I knew if I told her that Willow was harmless, she wouldn't believe me. I knew, too, that if I told Walsh about my feelings, she would pull me off the case and just send someone else - then I couldn't protect Willow."

"So you figured you'd just keep submitting these harmless reports, appearing to remain completely impartial, and eventually Walsh would lose interest," Riley said, filling in the gaps.

"Right," Tara agreed. "Then I found out about you and I went to see Walsh. You know the rest."

Riley nodded. It all made sense. In truth, Riley couldn't fault Tara for the choices she had made. She had done her best to pick the lesser of two evils, all the while trying to protect Willow. Riley realized that if he'd been in Tara's place, he would have done exactly the same thing.

"I need you to keep this quiet, Riley," Tara said. "Walsh can't find out. And that means no telling Buffy or-"

"I know," Riley said, interrupting. "And I won't say a word about anything you've told me about Walsh or The Initiative or you and Willow - not even to Buffy."

"I need to keep this as quiet as possible for as long as possible," Tara said.

"You realize you're going to have to at least tell Willow," Riley said, more statement than question. "The longer you wait, the worse it will be."

"I know," Tara said. "I know."

"So what now?" Riley asked.

"Now... I go home, take a shower, and get some sleep," Tara said.

"Tara, that's not what I meant," Riley said, pursing his lips.

Tara smiled tiredly. "I know," she said, having known full well what Riley was really asking. That was the sixty-four thousand dollar question though, wasn't it? What would she do now? What should she do next?

"Honestly, I am going to get some sleep," Tara said, "because I can't think about this anymore right now. Then... I'm going to call Willow. I'll tell her today. All of it. I had already decided to do that. She deserves to know the truth. Whatever happens after that, well... I'll figure it out as I go."

Riley nodded. "I think that's the right decision, Tara," he said. "If she knows the full story, hopefully she'll understand that we need to keep it from Walsh long enough to find out what's going on. In the meantime, I'll start poking my nose where it doesn't belong, see what I can find out."

"Riley..." Tara said warningly. She didn't want Riley to put himself in danger anymore than he already had just by listening to her story.

Riley put his hand up to silence her. "We're in this together now," he said. "We're a team, remember? Partners. And partners back each other up."

Tara rolled her eyes and laughed. "Riley, we've been partners for all of about nine hours. Nine hours does not an obligation make."

Riley grinned that big farm boy grin. "Not where I come from. Once a partner, always a partner. We're like the Mafia. Once you're in, you can never get out."

"And this would be the Soy Bean Mafia, I suppose?" Tara joked. "You have a big turf war over control of the cow trade? You have a Corn Consiglieri?"

Riley howled with laughter and just nodded. Tara couldn't help but laugh too.

"Seriously, Tara," Riley said earnestly. "I care about Willow, too. Did you know that she's the one who actually got Buffy and me together?"

Tara shook her head. That she hadn't known.

"Well she did," Riley said. "She knew I liked Buffy, but was too nervous to say anything. So she sort of gave me advice on how to get Buffy's attention, and kind of pushed us together. Of course, she also threatened to beat me to death with a shovel if I hurt Buffy, but..."

Tara's eyes widened in surprise. She couldn't imagine Willow threatening anyone and yet somehow... she could.

"A vague disclaimer's nobody's friend," Riley said simply, as if that explained everything.

"O-kay," Tara said uncertainly.

"Anyway, point is that Willow was my friend before I really even got to know Buffy," Riley said. "Willow was nice to me, talked to me, helped me out... just because that's Willow. She does that."

"Yeah, she does," Tara said with pride.

Riley smiled. "Willow's a great person, and even if she wasn't my friend, I'd still want to help her. And even of you weren't my friend - which you are, by the way - I'd want to help you, because you're a great person, too," Riley explained. "So now add the fact that you're both my friends, plus the fact that Willow is my girlfriend's best friend, and that you and I are partners in one of the most covert government organizations in America, and well... what do you think I'm gonna do?"

"Um, I'm thinking you're going to help?" Tara said, smiling.

"Precisely," Riley said, pleased that his logic had worked.

"By the way, you're starting to babble like Willow," Tara smirked.

"What is up with that?" Riley asked good naturedly. "Does she babble like that all the time? I mean, it's sweet, but wow... I get dizzy trying to follow her train of thought."

Tara grinned. "You should hear her when she gets aroused," she said, blushing slightly.

"Really?" Riley asked, grinning back at Tara.

"Oh, yeah," Tara said, blushing even more.

**************************

Tara was just finishing her dissertation on the finer points of Willow-babble as they reached Tara's dorm room.

"...so I said... Willow!" Tara gasped out the name in surprise as she opened the door to find two green eyes staring up at her from the middle of her bed.

Riley was laughing as he came in behind Tara - until he too spotted Willow, who was looking very tired and quite confused.

Willow sat in the center of the bed rubbing her eyes. She looked past Tara to stare at Riley. Then she looked back at Tara, who was hanging her head down guiltily.

"I should go," Riley said quietly, backing out of the room and leaving the door standing open. Neither woman commented on his leaving. Tara looked back up to find Willow still staring at her. The look on Willow's face broke Tara's heart.

"Wil-"

"Are you sleeping with Riley?" Willow demanded.

Honestly, that was the last thing Tara had ever expected to come out of Willow's mouth.

"What!?!" Tara yelped. "You think that I... that he... oh Goddess, no!" Tara backpedaled, even as she started laughing. She couldn't help it, even though she knew she was not helping the situation. Just the thought of her and Riley... it really was quite funny.

Willow's eyes went wide when Tara started laughing, tears forming. The sight of Willow tearing up stopped Tara's laughing cold. She rushed over to the redhead, wrapping her arms around her. Willow's arms stayed limply at her sides.

"Oh, sweetie, no," Tara said, stroking Willow's back and placing tiny kisses into her hair. "Riley and I are friends, nothing more. I was laughing because just the thought of Riley and I having an affair... no, baby. I'm not sleeping with Riley."

Willow's arms finally lifted up and weakly settled on Tara's hips. Tara looked back and brushed the tears out of Willow's eyes and peered into them intently.

"There is no one, and I mean no one, other than you," Tara said with all the love in her heart. "I am completely, totally, one hundred percent in love with you. There will never be anyone else but you. Ever."

That got a little smile from Willow. She looked down shyly and bit her bottom lip.

"Really?" Willow asked quietly, looking back up. Her little smile was quickly turning into a patented Willow-grin.

"Really," Tara said firmly, placing a tender kiss on Willow's lips.

"It's just... I mean, I know you said to go home and all but I was so upset and I was getting ready to go... and then I knocked your journal off your desk and I went to put it back but it was open and I started reading it..." Willow went into an extended babble. "And it was so beautiful and I realized you were writing about me... about us... you were writing about us, right?"

Tara nodded, biting her lip so she wouldn't laugh at the adorableness of her girlfriend.

"Oh, okay, good... so it was all just so beautiful and I realized I couldn't just let myself think you didn't want me and leave..."

Tara started to protest, but Willow silenced her with a finger to the blonde's lips.

"Shh, I know, baby... reading those poems made me realize you do want me because you love me... so I had to stay and wait for you to come back so we could talk... and I'm really sorry I read your private poems... I didn't mean to-"

This time it was Tara's turn to silence Willow, and she did so with a kiss.

They held each other for a long moment, taking comfort in each others arms. Finally Tara pulled back and moved back toward the door to close it.

"So you've been here all night?" Tara asked as she turned back to face Willow after she had closed the door. Willow was staring at her with her brow furrowed in obvious confusion. "What is it, sweetie?"

"Tara?" Willow asked slowly, almost distractedly. "Why are you wearing camouflage?"

Tara's eyes went wide. She looked down at her outfit and realized she was in fact still wearing her fatigues. She and Riley hadn't changed before heading out since she was heading straight home and Buffy was used to seeing Riley in his military garb.

Tara looked back up at Willow with something akin to panic, and started pacing. Neither Willow nor Tara said a word as Willow continued to stare and Tara continued to pace. Finally, a thought occurred to Willow. A thought she really didn't want to think about.

All the pieces of the puzzle slid into place.

That night at the Bronze, feeling that Tara was holding something back... Willow had felt that it had something to do with her.

The feeling Willow got from the poems that Tara was hiding something... A feeling which, when she really thought about it, she'd had niggling at the back of her mind for a while.

Tara's amazingly muscular body... It was deceptive, really, but Tara was really, really strong under all those baggy clothes. Not that Willow minded in the least, especially when... Okay, concentrate Rosenberg. No getting lost in thoughts of Tara-thigh pressing... no, no... no pressing. Back to the puzzle pieces.

Tara leaving suddenly last night... Willow had spent practically every waking moment with Tara for the last month, and they had talked for hours and hours, but Tara had never mentioned anyone named Margaret. Nor had she mentioned any other friends, for that matter. So who would be calling and why would it make Tara go running out in the middle of the night?

Tara being out with Riley all night...

The camouflage...

And she knew... suddenly, certainly, she knew. But she clung to one last, desperate hope. Funny how the mind does that.

"Baby, please tell me you were just out playing paintball?" Willow practically begged.

That was great! I really like Riley in your story! :shock Yes, yes, it surprised me too because i HATE riley...with a passion...but your riley...i kinda...dare i say...like him! *gasp* But i really liked how Tara finally let out all her emotions and finally told someone what happened.

And Willow figured it out! That girl always has her brain turned on! Can wait for the next part...oh boy does Tara have some eplaining to do! :grin

Damn BB you made me actually like Riley. I laughted, I chuckled I thought he was even kind of cool. What a brilliant update and so much happened. I'm glad Tara has someone she can trust at the initiative. Willow has figured it out, she's clever like that (thanks for putting me out of my angst about Tara finding Willow in her room btw) and I wonder where it all goes from here?

I have too say I laughed out loud when Willow asked Tara if she was sleeping with Riley :lol Poor Willow is going to feel deceived now and Tara has an awful lot of explaining to do. Eagerly awaiting more.

Heh,

Tara's dad wrote the truth on a piece of paper and Tara wonders how Walsh made him do that... I got some ideas about that :D .

Wow, this was a long update. I somewhat expected them to find Adam actually, don't know why. It was therefore a suprise when Tara and Riley just returned after 8 hours search having found nothing :D .

Them walking back to campus in fatigues was never a good idea. Is there any time ALL students are asleep on a campus I ask ? Pretty much from the moment Tara was about to enter her room I figured Willow would spot her clothing, unless she made a real fast move into the shower :) .

Liked how Willow asked her question (probably with her eyes all big and looking up all pleading) with a nice escape-option build in, heh. I never really disliked Reilly in season4 (the ending of his arc in s5 sucked imo) but I actually *liked* him here. Being non-judgemental and supportive, good farm boy.

Main question in my head is now: will Willow stay in the room or not ? It's never good if another person has to discover something about you, as opposed to you telling him/her. It's not a good start for sure. Being part of the Iniative itself isn't the problem, it's Tara's mission that will cause the most trouble when telling Willow I think. ("I was send to spy on you, but I really fell in love with you" is a bit tooooo cliched to be believable:) ).

Did I mention I liked this update :D ??

Oh Blamey You're So Fine

Postby Tulipp » Sun Oct 27, 2002 10:56 am

Okay, yes! That's it! I loved the scene with Willow confessing that she's read the private poems; there was this nice contrast with Willow's instant confession of the truth with Tara's long, slow not-confession so far. And I liked it dawning on Willow that all these details (especially Tara being strong) added up to one answer. That was great.

And Riley...everyone is saying it, and it's so true....he is such a stand up guy. I like the way you get at that here, with his Iowa speech patterns and the way he speaks gently and simply and to the point. He's a good friend for Tara, and she's a good friend for him. And you really get at that.

So, I'm practicing my splits and my yells. I have a feeling this is just going to get better and better. I need a cheerleader emoticon.

Finally caught up with the last few updates, and they were truly wonderful. The little interlude with Willow reading Tara's poems was just the right thing at that juncture. And I really liked this last update. The story went from really good to great there.

I can really see Riley and Tara relating. They both seem like strong silent loyal types.

I've always been pro Riley and anti bad boyfriends for Buffy. I think you captured why that's a good idea in this update. ;)

Willow babble as she explained how she came across the poems was great. I have a feeling she's going to rise up to the occasion here.

Thanks for writing!

a little somethin' else

Postby blameburner » Tue Oct 29, 2002 12:28 am

Hey all. Sorry there's been no update. It'll probably be at least a few more days, probably the weekend before I can update this story. I'm waiting on some outline help from my beta (the magnificent Tulipp), and I've also got a LOT going on this week - with two papers due next Monday and Halloween, it's a bit crazy. Plus, to be honest, I need a bit of a break from the story. But...

Since the creative juices are still flowing... since I have to do something in my law classes (cuz actually paying attention would just be sick and wrong)... since Halloween is my favorite holiday... and since there has been a decided lack of smut in TOD... I have a little pressie I'm working on for you all, which at least the first half of will be posted tomorrow night.

It's a little something I call "A Hot and Heavy Halloween." Hehe. Yep, it's a smutfic, though there is actually a minor plot to it. The smut is all second half, so even though I've got the first half written, I'm going to try and finish it all before posting, so I can post the whole thing at once. But if I don't get it done tomorrow, I'll post the first half tomorrow night and the second half on Wednesday.

Okay, so hopefully the smut story will make up for the delay on TOD. I'll probably set up a separate thread for the Halloween story, sicne it is set in a totally different AU world than TOD.

See ya tomorrow! ;)

The conversation between Riley and Tara was really well done. I'm glad she decided to trust him, it was good that she had someone to talk to. Interesting that both consider Walsh as a mentor, yet neither truly trusts her.

Willow figuring out the reason for Tara wearing fatigues. Not surprising, as she's a brainy type. Really intrigued as to what her reaction will be.

Ah, I loved the interaction between Riley and Tara. You've brought the characteristics that made me like him in Season 4. I really like how you've got the two of them bonding over something, because they're both on the outer edges of the Scooby Gang. That's a great comparison and contrast in their characters and situations. Love it.

And yes, I'm waiting anxiously to hear Tara's explanation. Fantastic stuff.

Okee dokee campers... as promised, I wrote and posted the totally non-TOD but very smuterific "A Hot and Heavy Halloween." Of course, that has meant no TOD update.

The good news is that my glorious beta, Tulipp, has made notes on my outline and given those to me. The bad news is that I still need to digest those notes and revise accordingly. So...

No update yet. I'm shooting for this weekend, but I've got a lot going on the next five days or so (Halloween, a softball tournament, the law school's traditional 199 Nights party marking 199 nights until I GRADUATE, and lets not forget two papers due Monday), so that goal may be unrealistic. Then again, knowing me, I'll probably shirk some responsibilities (or partying) and write the next chapter anyway.

In any case, stay tuned, as chances are I will have something up in the next few days. Please don't be too upset with me for the delay - I'm trying, really.

Now some replies...

***foreverpiper - Yep, Tara's got a lot of explaining to do. I wonder how that will go?

***Puff - You thought he was even kind of cool? Well I will definitely take that as a compliment! *G*

***Grimlock72 - No, them walking back in fatigues was definitely not a good idea. Then again, they I always thought that on the show - Riley was always running around in fatigues, and I always wondered "hey, doesn't anyone notice him?" But then I would remember my own college experience playing "TAG the Assassination Game," where we would run around campus with those guns that shoot little red rubber darts, trying to shoot each other... one time we were even diving in and out of these walking tour groups on Prospective Student Day - and no one, not even the parents who we were hiding among, said a thing. People are pretty oblivious when they want to be.

***BFR from Paris - Poor Riley... I'm making all these people like him, which means that so many people DIDN'T like him before! So sad...

***xita - Well I'm sure Tara can explain it all... question is, will it make a difference?

***The Rose24 - You know I live to torture you, right? I'm thinking of putting that on my business cards. You know, something like "for all your legal and torture needs."

***areslei - Yep. Riley has a purpose. Truthfully though? His "purpose" developed a little late... I originally hadn't planned to include him to this extent, but then... I don't know... I just liked the dynamic.

***Tulipp - Hehe... you should take a bow, you know... your ideas really helped. And ooo, splits AND yells? I'm a lucky gal.

***Grimaldi - Glad you liked the paintball line... 'twas one of my favorites.

***MissQuirky - I don't think Willow ever seriously thought Tara was sleeping with Riley, but... you know how when you don't really want to know something, your mind just goes in all these wild directions - anything to avoid the real truth, ya know?

***ExtraFlameyWT - Riley got such a bad rap on the show... I'm glad I could redeem him a bit for ya. *G*

***barnabasvamp - What will Willow say? What will Willow say!?!? Um... I dunno. *insert cheeky grin here*

***Murasaki S - Strong silent loyal types... I think you hit the nail on the proverbial head there. In this story, I think Tara and Riley have a tremendous amount in common - it's fun to explore.

***mollyig - The whole dynamic they have going with Walsh is interesting, I agree. I always wondered on the show how Riley could be so blind for so long, so I wanted to explore that a bit - and make him a little less clueless.

***tommo - That's a lot of what I like about the Riley-Tara dynamic... I think that it reminds me in a way of what I've always liked about the Anya-Tara dynamic - the outer fringe factor. Never underestimate the power of the Outer Fringe Factor! Muahaha.

Truth of Deception

Postby tiredsoul » Thu Oct 31, 2002 12:13 pm

**hanging my head in shame as I realize I haven’t given feedback since the beginning**

This story is awesome … having Tara work for the Initiative and Walsh as her mentor … excellent. I love the way you write these two. Both their thought processes are funny and angsty at the same time.

Tara getting Willow to “let loose” with the water balloons was pretty funny, especially with Mr. Tweed. We all had teachers like that, I suppose, And behind the pillar … That. Was. Some. Kiss.

You really played up the angst on Willow wanting to make love with Tara and Tara putting her off. I was on the edge of my seat and felt so sorry for Willow, especially with all the insane planning in Tara’s room. And then you had to go and add part 16.5. *sigh* Such beautiful poetry. I could almost feel Tara’s thought process as I read them. A poet’s soul as you say.

Dare I say that I actually like Riley? *shudder* He’s more like when he was first introduced. Nice, sweet, nice. Just a sweet corn-fed Iowa boy.

I can hardly wait for the next update …

Postby blameburner » Thu Nov 07, 2002 2:21 am

Geez... it's been so long between updates, I bet you've all forgotten what this story is about by now. Heck, I think I'VE forgotten what this story is about!

Well, not really... actually I've been dutifully working on fixing the outline problems, with a whole lot of help from my beta. The outline is not completely fixed, but it is fixed to the point that I've finally been able to continue on with the actual story-writing again. So Part 18 is about half done right now, and I hope to finish it tomorrow during the day. If not, then I will finish it as soon as I get home from class tomorrow night. So either way, you'll have an update tomorrow night sometime.

Thanks for being patient. I think you'll find the time I'm taking to revise the story will be worth the delays (at least I hope so).

Part 18

Postby blameburner » Thu Nov 07, 2002 8:48 pm

Yep, I'm double-posting. Don't hurt me. As promised, here's the update. I didn't have time to have it beta'd, so forgive me.

The BIG HONKIN' ANGST WARNING is still in effect. Please stock up an provisions such as tissues accordingly. Anyone suggesting stocking up on chocolate, too, would not be accused of crazy talk.

Okay campers... this is it. Time for THE talk. You know, the one that we've been building up to for the entire story? Yep, that's the one. And it's rather angsty. I'm just warning you. I'd suggest that you wait to read it until I've posted the next part, but... well, there's a lot to work through. This isn't going to be something that can be dealt with in one update - there's no "we're 25 minutes into the half-hour sitcom so we'd better make things right before the show ends no matter how unbelievable it may be" sort of fix for this.

You'll also notice that this part is a bit shorter than most of my updates. Reason: 10 pages of angst sucks. So I'm trying to keep these next several sections a bit shorter.

But, lest any of you worry too much, the pain has a purpose, and I love a happy ending.

Title: The Truth of Deception - Part 18: Recriminations

Author: blameburner

Feedback: Sure… Always a plus

Summary: AU, baby! So you all know by now... Tara is part of the Initiative. Plenty of questions remain, however, and the answers will be revealed... eventually.

Spoiler Warning: S4. Everything up to "Hush" is canon. After that, this story veers off. There will be some similarities to S4, but definite differences. Basically, if it happened after "Hush" on the show, assume it didn't happen unless I mention it specifically.

Disclaimer: Not my characters, but oh how I wish they were! Joss, blah, blah, ME, blah, blah.

Rating: Generally R, but some NC-17 (maybe). Just be prepared.

Pairings: W/T, of course.

Angst: Cliffhanger warning! Angst level of 10. Yep, definitely a 10.

The camouflage...

And she knew... suddenly, certainly, she knew. But she clung to one last, desperate hope. Funny how the mind does that.

"Baby, please tell me you were just out playing paintball?" Willow practically begged.

Part 18

Tara stopped pacing and turned towards Willow, though she couldn't look at her love. This was so how she didn't want this to go. Not that there would have been a good way for this to go, but this... this was certainly less good than it could have been. Tara knew she should have realized her baby would eventually figure things out. Willow was nothing if not smart... and compassionate, and beautiful, and...

Okay, Tara. No time for that now. You screwed up. You waited too long, and now... now no matter what you say, Willow will have figured it out on her own. No matter how you explain it, you've been caught in the lie. No matter that you planned to tell her anyway, it's still going to seem like you were just going to go on deceiving her. So suck it up and explain.

"Wil, I-"

"Answer me," Willow said pleadingly. "Please?"

Tara looked at her love, took a deep breath, and began.

"No, I wasn't out playing paintball," Tara said, looking straight into Willow's eyes. "I'm sorry, Willow. I am so, so sorry. You don't know how much-"

"How long have you been in The Initiative?" Willow asked quietly, cutting Tara off. Her chin jutted out just slightly as she refused to give into the tears that were already building behind her eyes. Tara lied to me. Why did Tara lie to me? She knew I knew about Riley being Initiative... so why did she have to lie to me about the same thing?

Tara was startled for a second. Although she knew Willow had figured it out, it still surprised her to actually hear the redhead say it out loud. "Two years," she said simply.

"Two years," Willow repeated, her eyes falling down to the carpet. Her mind was spinning. On the one hand, there was the stunningly simple fact that Tara had lied to her. On the other hand, there were the frightening complications that lie represented, the biggest of which was...

"Why?" Willow asked, looking up and meeting Tara's eyes, not needing to say the rest of the words. Tara was smart. Tara would know what Willow meant. Why did you lie to me? Why didn't you tell me? Why are you here?

Tara's face showed her anguish, and part of Willow wanted nothing more than to comfort the woman she loved. But she couldn't do that. So she waited.

There were so many things Tara could say. She could tell Willow that she was ordered to lie, that she hadn't had a choice... and those things were true in a way, but they weren't the whole truth. The truth was that Tara had chosen this, for one reason or another, and that Tara had to take responsibility for her choices. Her actions. Her lies.

"I lied because... because I was investigating you," Tara said shamefully.

Willow was stunned. Of all the things she had expected Tara to say, that hadn't even crossed her mind.

"Tell me," was all Willow could choke out.

"I was originally sent to investigate witches on campus," Tara began. "To investigate potential threats. So I went to the Wicca meeting. And there I met you."

"You thought I was a threat?" Willow asked incredulously.

Tara shook her head vigorously. "No, baby, I didn't-"

"Then why?" Willow asked, cutting off Tara's protests.

Tara slumped against the door behind her, rubbing her eyes. She looked back up at Willow.

"After the Gentlemen came... after what happened in the laundry room... after the power we shared," Tara explained, "Professor Walsh thought you needed to be watched."

Willow felt her pain at Tara having lied to her at all giving way anger over the extent of Tara's lie.

"And so you just happily agreed?" Willow said, her ire rising.

"No! No, baby it wasn't like that," Tara explained. This is not going well, Tara thought. But then again, what did you expect, MaClay? Did you expect that Willow would just say, 'Oh, it's okay honey. I understand why you've been deceiving me for months'? "I didn't think you were a threat, but Professor Walsh... she seemed so concerned, and... well, I knew she'd just send someone else if I didn't agree to do it-"

"Oh, right. How noble of you," Willow said sarcastically. She couldn't help it. She felt like her heart was breaking, like she had no control - no control except to lash out. "Remind me to send you a thank you card."

"I just... I didn't know what to do, Willow," Tara said. "All my training told me to not question, to just obey orders. But there you were, this amazing person who I'd only just met and yet somehow I knew that I wanted to know for the rest of my life. All I could think about was how I wanted to get to know you better, how I wanted to spend time with you... and I wanted to keep you safe-"

"By spying on me?!?" Willow said. "By pretending to be my friend?"

"No. Yes. I don't know!" Tara shouted, throwing her hands up in frustration. "I knew you weren't dangerous, okay? But Professor Walsh thought you might be dangerous, and I was afraid that if anyone else was sent to investigate, they wouldn't see what I saw. They wouldn't care what happened to you, and they'd misread the situation."

It would have made some sense to Willow, if she'd truly been listening. But her mind was still spinning. "God, you and Riley must have been laughing about this for weeks," she said, more to herself than to Tara.

"What? No, oh God... Willow, no. Riley didn't know anything about me until last night," Tara explained. It was one thing for Willow to be upset with her, but she couldn't live with herself if her lies hurt Riley. "I promise you, Willow, no one was laughing. Riley didn't know. I swear."

Willow stared at Tara for a long moment, then nodded curtly. She didn't know what to believe at the moment, but somehow she believed Tara about Riley.

"So for months you've been lying to me. Investigating me," Willow said bitterly. "Why so long? You say you didn't think I was a threat from the beginning, so your mission must have ended by now. So tell me, why are you still lying?"

Willow's words stung, but Tara just accepted the pain. She deserved it. All of it.

"I was afraid, Willow," Tara explained. "I was afraid that if you found out the truth about me and The Initiative, that Walsh would pull me off your case, that she would forbid me from seeing you-"

"That doesn't make sense," Willow interrupted. "Riley still got to be with Buffy after she found out he was in The Initiative."

"But it was a different situation," Tara said. "I'd been sent to find out about witches, then about you. I was undercover. If you found out the truth, my cover would have been blown, and Walsh would have pulled me off - and she just would have sent someone else because she wasn't satisfied that you were safe."

"Safe. That's a laugh," Willow said harshly.

Goddess, you're saying this all wrong, MaClay, Tara chastised herself. You're screwing this up completely.

"So is anything you told me true?" Willow challenged. "Are you even a witch?"

"Of course I am, Willow. You know that," Tara said.

"I don't know what I know anymore," Willow muttered.

"Everything I told you about my mom, about my family, my background... it was all true. What I didn't tell you was that I was recruited into The Initiative after my mom's death, when I was seventeen," Tara explained. "That's how I left home. That's how I got away from my family."

Willow felt a twinge of guilt over forcing Tara to bring up her family. She knew the subject was extremely painful for the blonde. Or at least, she thought she knew that. Everything was upside down. If the sun started rising in the West at that moment, Willow wouldn't have been at all surprised.

"Goddess, Willow... I owed Professor Walsh so much," Tara continued in the midst of Willow's silence. "She got me out of there, away from that place and those people. Hell, she's the one who finally proved that I wasn't a demon like my dad told me all my life!"

That got Willow's attention. "What are you talking about?"

Tara saw the look of concern - even through all the pain - on Willow's face, and she shook her head. "It doesn't matter," Tara said quietly. She refused to make Willow feel sorry for her. Willow needed to be angry, deserved to be angry, and if Willow was concerned for Tara, she couldn't do that.

"Fine," Willow said harshly, Tara's refusal to be completely honest with her - once again - bringing the anger back full force. "So what about the rest of it, Tara? Was it all just a lie? I trusted you more than anyone in my life!"

Tara couldn't take it anymore. The depth of Willow's pain filled the room, choking her. She stepped towards Willow, wanting nothing more than to pull Willow into her arms, to offer some level of comfort. But Willow rebuffed her, holding up the palm of her hand towards Tara. Tara backed off, resigned to the fate of her own making.

"No, it wasn't all a lie," Tara said quietly but sincerely. "Being your friend wasn't a lie. Loving you wasn't a lie. I started to fall in love with you that night in the laundry room. When we touched hands, I felt something... a connection unlike anything I've ever felt before."

"That was just fear and magic," Willow said bitterly. Even though she had felt the exact same thing, she now told herself that it was nothing.

"No, oh Goddess no, Willow. It was so much more," Tara protested. "Just any two witches couldn't have moved that soda machine the way we did. It was only because it was us - you and I together - that we were able to move it. The strength of our magic comes from our bond. You and I... we have a connection that transcends magic. Our souls are connected."

"Right," Willow said, her voice drowning in sarcasm. "I might have believed that once, but not now. Not now that you've betrayed me."

"I know," Tara said shamefully. "You're right. You have every reason to hate me, and no reason at all to trust me. But if nothing else, please believe that I was trying to protect you. There's something going on-"

"I don't care!" Willow screamed, tears streaming freely down her face. She couldn't take it anymore. "Can't you see? You. Broke. My. Heart. At least when Oz betrayed me with that skanky she-wolf, it was animal instinct. But you... your betrayal was calculated and thought out. But that's not the worst of it! What makes it so much worse, what makes me feel like you've shredded my heart and drained my soul... is that I never loved Oz the way that I loved you."

Tara couldn't speak, couldn't even look at the woman she loved. She had destroyed Willow, and in turn had destroyed herself. She couldn't bear the pain she had caused Willow. All she wanted was to take away the hurt, to soothe the agony that was so clearly eating Willow alive.

"Is that all of it?" Willow asked calmly. The dramatic change in Willow's tone forced Tara to look up at the redhead. The tears had stopped flowing, and Willow was calm now. Too calm. "Or are there any other lies I should know about?"

"No," Tara choked out.

Willow nodded tersely. "Just out of curiosity... was kissing me part of the plan, too? Was touching me in the middle of the night just part of the lie?"

"No. No, that was just us," Tara said quietly. "I couldn't help it, to touch the woman I love. I never told Professor Walsh that we were involved. She thinks we're just friends. I didn't... There's a lot I kept from her. I didn't tell her how powerful you are, and I didn't report all the spells we did, how we spent our time. I didn't tell her that I fell in love with you. I told her as little as possible."

"I see," was all Willow said.

"Willow, I didn't tell her about us - the real us - because it's dangerous for you," Tara tried to explain. She needed to tell Willow about her suspicions about Walsh, that she feared Willow was in danger. "Walsh-"

Willow brushed past Tara and reached the door.

"Willow," Tara said, her voice pleading with Willow to stay.

"Don't. Don't say my name," Willow said, turning back towards Tara. Her voice was full of steel. "Don't even think it. You have no right."

And then she was gone.

Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstacy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bare. If we can live without passion maybe we'd know some peace. But we'd be hollow, empty rooms, shuttered, and dank, With out passion we'd truly be dead. ANGEL in "Passion"

Ow! That was wonderfully painful. Both Willow and Tara's feelings felt very real; Tara's desperation in trying to explain when no words can help, and Willow's feelings of betrayal which Tara can't penetrate even though Willow is sharp and perceptive as ever, quickly figuring out everything Tara left out.

Oh gosh, I tried to close my eyes, but it didn't work! Ahh Willow has every right to be upset. I just hope she can forgive and well trust again. That's hard to do. Great update!
