Gloria Rueben - Best known from ER as Jeanie Boulet. Various other TV appearances. Beautiful voice.



Emily Procter - Not sure if she's still considered obscure but, plays Calleigh on CSI:Miami and was on The West Wing for 2 seasons as Ainsley Hayes.



Tara Morice - Fran from Strictly Ballroom. Haven't seen her in anything else but I was very impressed. Apparently she was a prostitute in Moulin Rouge.



Heather Juergensen - Helen from Kissing Jessica Stein, again, haven't seen her in anything else but loved her.

I am seeing a few names that I wouldn't have considered obscure before reading this thread. Lily Taylor, Clea Duvall, Laura Innes are quite well known I think and have acted in some 'big' movies. However, I am not really sure how to measure obscurity, heh. As it is they are on my list of favourite actresses, not that I have a list like that, but if I had they would be.

She may not be obscure, but she's certainly not a household name. Connie Nielsen. She was very good (and stunning!) in Gladiator. And then I kept catching ads for Basic and wondering who that gorgeous blonde was. Connie Nielsen! Go figure!

Too bad the movie apparently sucks...

My favourite obscure actresses would have to be:



1. Callie De Fabry. She was in "Birds of Prey" as Dinah's lesbian friend Gabby. She did a wonderful job creating an interesting and likeable character, especially as she was only in two episodes. She's also very good in the film "Warnings".



2. Izabella Miko. She played Cammie in "Coyote Ugly" and was definately the best reason for watching the movie as far as I'm concerned. She is amazing.



3. Emilie de Ravin. She played Tess in "Roswell". I stopped watching after she left.

I've loved Scarlett Johansson since I first saw "Manny and Lo", a terrific film by the way. She might be a little less obscure since "Ghost World" and the new "Lost In Translation" (which I must still see!) I used to like Anna Chlumsky of "My Girl" fame though she seems to have disappeared off of the radar. Too bad. She was quite brilliant for an eleven year old. Alicia Witt is kind of on the borderline, obscuritywise. I had a friend who wrote for "Cybil" and hooked me on her, so I try to follow her work. She's a very sweet girl, and I give high recommendations to "Playing Mona Lisa". Most of you probably know Clea Duvall of "But I'm A Cheerleader" and as the Buffy invisible girl, but most people are clueless about her. I love all the work I've seen of hers, except "Identity" where the writer and director should be shot for giving her nothing to do but cry repeatedly. I used to love Meredith Monroe, my only reason for ever watching any "Dawson's Creek," but she seems to have disapeared as well. Jena Malone has been doing some terrific work in indie films. I think she could be great if she keeps making smart and inventive choices. Last of all, I have fallen head over heels for Rebecka Liljeberg, who was marvelous in "Fucking Amal". I'm still eagerly awaiting my copy of Bear's Kiss. Swedish movies are so hard to find over here in the states.



Is there a thread for obsure actors? Because I feel I must mention my favorite actor, Jon Cryer, who is far more intriguing that Mathew Broderick, who he is often mistaken for. "Plan B" and "Went To Coney Island On A Mission From God Be Back By Five" are must sees if you are into the artsy films.

This is really a wild thread - may I add another note for Melanie Lynskey? She is quite a doll and needs more exposure here. I believe there may have been a rumour not long back of her appearing on Angel. *sigh*



Who I'd really like to mention is Sophie Ward (daughter of actor Simon), who, in her teens had small parts in The Hunger (she got a smooch from Susan Sarandon), Return to Oz (she was one of the princesses whose heads were stolen), and perhaps best known as Elizabeth in Young Sherlock Holmes.



Sophie is truly one of the most classically beautiful women on this planet - one of her best performances was in A Dark Adapted Eye (with Helena Bonham Carter) that aired in the US on PBS.



While never world-famous, Sophie did make a huge splash in the mid-90s when she came out after 9 years of marriage and two children. In 2000 she married her girlfriend, writer Rena Brannan.

Wow, so many great names that I agree with: Imogene Stubbs, Amy Carlson, Megan Follows, Ashley Laurence, Jordana Brewster,Tara Fitzgerald,Toni Collette,Rachel Griffiths, Hudson Leick, Audra McDonald (who I discovered on a couple of eps of L&O:SVU as a shrink, little did I know then how awesomely talented the woman is!), Melinda Clarke (anyone catch her on 2 eps of CSI, playing a dominatrix that Grissom was interested in???)........

Let me add a couple more: Rachael Stirling (Diana Riggs's daughter) and Jodhi May, both of Tipping the Velvet. Jodhi has wonderfully expressive eyes, making me think "how in the world could anyone ever hurt this woman, 'cause I'd start crying just looking at her being sad."

There's an actress who may be about to become much less obscure: Kathryn Morris. I really loved her as "Najara" on Xena: Warrior Princess (her first performance, in Crusader, before the writers screwed her up in The Convert), and now she's about to star in a new show, Cold Case (premiering this Sunday, Sept.28, on CBS). It's not the kind of show I would generally watch (so holding off on starting a thread for it), but KM is a really interesting actor (BTW, I really prefer the gender-neutral term to "actress"), so I'm looking forward to it.

Laura Donnelly who's career has just begun, she played a lesbian in HEX but I can't remember the charecter's name. Plus she has an Irish accent to die for.

Sarah Smart, probably best known for playing a lesbian in At Home With The Braithwaites. I LOVED that show!

Unfortunately having a really hard time thinking of names at the moment...but the woman who played Bubble on AbFab...she starred in this amazing film called Little Voice...I think it's Jane something

Then going back in time...Ruth Hussey...she was Liz in The Philadelphia Story...really held her own on the comedic front next to Jimmy Stewart, Kataharine Hepburn and my all time favorite Cary Grant

Another oldie who played supporting roles in so many of the truly great films of the golden age...Thelma Ritter

As for truly obscure...but perhaps less so to those from the other side of the pond...back when I was in high school, PBS did a series called The Shakespeare Plays...there was a sort of reperetory company including Helen Mirren (love her!) and an actress named Sinead Cusack...just loved her!

And lots and lots of others who have already been mentioned...plus those I think of as the corset movie reperetory...Imelda Staunton...Linda Basset...and all the other unnamed middle aged well upholstered supporting ladies in corsets in all those Merchant-Ivory films I love so well...OK brain cramp...that's all for now
