Fanfic challenge

Postby Puff » Sun May 25, 2003 4:52 am

Well it's a request really and I'd love to see if it can be done. I'd like to read a story, any rating, any length, but the writer HAS to include each title of the Buffy episode's Willow and Tara were in. In order.

From Hush to Seeing Red.

Can it be done?

I don't know but I'd love to read it and see if anyone can pull it off.

Good luck :)

Oooh Puff... That sounds like a good one that someone could do alot with but maybe I'll just try something short - a scene. See what happens. Its been ages since I did a fanfic challenge.

*If you see my beta readers just give me time to duck and cover.*

Edited to add... This is practically impossible when you see the ep titles all lined up. Hmmm

Hmmm... reached the end of S4 okay... Just going to do S5 now, but S6... what season six?

Okay so this is gonna be difficult :p

Puff, I need to know a few things before I (try) to begin to write something.

First, do you just want the eps where W/T are TOGETHER as in a couple? Or do I have to use Smashed, wrecked, dead things and the others before entropy too? :hmm

You should make an exact list of the episodes that we have to put in the fic. Please :D

2nd, the titles, do we have to use them like in the dialogs, in the narrations, or can we just, put them everywhere we like as long as it matches with the story?:P

3rd, for Bargaining pt1&2, do we have to include the "pt.1" and the "pt.2" or can we just use the word Bargaining and use it once? Because that would just be weird :lol

Finally, if the titles were used in the episodes, can we use the quotes or do something similar?

Thanks, I'm waiting for your answers:D

Anyway, this is a VERY interesting challenge.. Good luck to all!

Well... I am not sure what the answers to Domaris's questions are but here is my stab at this.

As I said above I refuse to go to Season 6 - even in such a loose way - so here is my effort which runs from Hush to The Gift.

No beta has been done on this so... live with the mistakes I need to go eat. I think I highlighted all the ep titles, but if I didn't then they should all be there.

Someone with more stomach than me can deal with S6...

Great challenge Puff, thanks I enjoyed it!

Katharyn

----------------------

Okay - this is my attempt at the fanfic challenge.

1) I defy anyone to make this not sound forced*S*
2) I am firmly of the belief this show ended at conclusion of S5

So I have unilaterally altered the conditions of the challenge as they apply to me :)

Some things I do not go near or anything - not even kittens.

--------------------

"Hush baby," Tara soothed as they lay there together. It had been a long, long few days and now they were kind of due for a rest - Willow especially. Willow, as always when she was dreaming, was frustrating her desire for sleep. On the other hand her love was unbearably cute as she murmured the things that came to her.

Quite often there were penguins in there.

Tara didn't mind at all really. She'd rested more than enough and the dull ache in her hand - despite all the painkillers - was going to keep her awake. Her mind was racing too. "You sleep love."

Willow had taken care of her... She'd known it all the time it was happening but she hadn't been able to get out. She was all home now though - with Willow and still in these damn pyjama's.

There hadn't been time to trawl through the wreckage of her room to find some new ones though. 'Get you some new PJ's and you'll feel like a new man,' Willow had promised twisting words of the shaving advert.

Tara didn't much want to feel like a new man but... hey new PJ's.

Besides, what she wanted was... She'd caused them so much trouble, nearly got Dawn killed. She'd screamed at herself, but only she'd been able to hear it. She'd known she was giving Dawn away and she hadn't been able to help it. They didn't hold it against her though - they knew she wasn't to blame and she couldn't have stopped herself. She hadn't been getting all 'I in team' just... Unable to hold in the truth. Sometimes the truth hurt.

And it had been pretty green energy she'd seen.

Would Dawnie forgive her? They'd barely had chance to speak... after what had happened. Tara had wanted to stay with Dawn, reassure her that she wasn't alone but... Dawn had to know that. They'd never leave her alone - but Willow had been right. The magic had taken so much out of her, she needed to sleep and Tara needed to sleep with her.

At least Buffy had been able to say it to her sister. Tara hadn't been able to say it to her Mom. Buffy hadn't been able to say it to her Mom either - or Riley come to that. Maybe Riley, even if they'd fallen out of love, would have been a good guy to have around right now. He'd been the sort of solid, dependable guy that...

Buffy hadn't been able to be happy with and they'd never said it... He'd be... He'd want to know. Just because they hadn’t said the word. Goodbye. Iowa wasn't so far away... but she doubted he was in Iowa.

They'd have to tell him - get him a message somehow.

He was... He'd so want to know. Buffy had never been just 'This Years Girl' to him even though it had been a year for them. To Riley, Buffy should have been his life. He should have been able to meet someone else, the most beautiful girl in the world - well not the MOST beautiful girl in the world because she was lying here dreaming and absolutely hers - but he could have met someone else he was supposed to be with and he should have been able to say 'Who are you? You think we should go out? No sorry - I'm with Buffy.'

But things fell apart.

Tara knew that, in days to come, they'd all just want to see the best in Buffy - but she'd had her flaws like everyone else. They all had their flaws and Buffy's big one had been her love life.

Riley had been a superstar - he'd really tried and Buffy hadn’t been able to let him in. Tara missed him - or had done until this whole brain sucking thing started. Then she'd missed herself too.

He'd gone - and they'd have to do without his strength. He'd always been close to Dawn, a big brother as much as Buffy's boyfriend but now someone else would have to fill the role he could have had now. He'd gone. He was off where the wild things are. Killing the heck out of them for the government but... It was a new day now. A new era. Somewhere there might be a new slayer - or not.

It was going to be like a new moon rising in the night sky. There was just a tiny part of it in view now... and soon it would start to grow until, eventually, the darkness seemed like a memory.

A memory they'd cherish like everything about their friend.

What was it Spike had said he'd tried to do to them last year? Put the whammy on the Scooby gang? Something about the Linda Factor... No... The Yoko Factor, that was it. He'd tried to break them apart - but really nothing could do that.

Nothing included death. Tara was just proud to be a part of that now. The Scooby Gang might have started being about Buffy and the slaying but there was an almost primeval air to the way it had developed just in the time she'd seen it. People tended towards structures - adapted them as they needed to. The most basic structure was family... and that was what they were. Now they'd adapt again. They'd take care of each other. Buffy's spirit wouldn't be allowed to grow restless at her friends grief.

They'd done the grief thing when Joyce died, got the Summer's girls through it.... got each other through it until it was a dull ache - just like her medicated hand - rather than something that ripped and tore your guts away.

Was it really just the end of last summer when it had been Buffy V's Dracula for the Sunnydale Monster Smackdown Title? So much had happened. They'd found a new friend, a new sister... a new member of their family who'd never really been there but on the other hand... they remembered being there the whole time. Dawn had called the bright green energy 'the real me' but that wasn't true. She was a person, she was Buffy's sister. She was the girl who'd come to Tara when she'd felt like an outsider and they'd found they were on the inside together.

Tara remembered it... And unless I'm still out of my mind then... Dawn was real. She always had been. Memory defined existence and they had a lot of memories.

They were a family, as much now as they had been back then, a age ago before the shadow had fallen over them. All the Tara had known the scoobies she'd never really been so afraid as she was now. Not when the rogue Slayer Faith had taken over Buffy. Not when the scoobies had fallen apart. Not when Joyce had passed and not when Glory had taken her... She'd known that Willow would look after her. The limit of her fear had been that she'd never get to tell Willow she loved her again. Willow, all she'd been able to hear was... Well Willow had been listening to fear. Her fear.

She was more afraid now though - they had to be there for each other, for Dawn. There was... They had to be a stable structure for the younger woman. She had no one but the scoobies now. No other family that had ever, really, known her. Or cared about her. She and Willow, along with Xander and Anya, would have to become like a triangle to support her - each couple a point with Dawn at the top.

She was just a kid and Tara knew how unfair it was... how much help Dawn was going to need.

Willow rolled over and flung an arm out into Tara’s face. She just kissed it and watched the subconscious smile break over Willow’s face – before some alarm. What was wrong? Why was Willow alarmed?

“Watchout! Penguin checkpoint!”

Penguin checkpoint?

“The Penguin King wants everyone tested. Blood Ties to the throne will ensure your safe passage.”

“Will,” Tara breathed, “honey… Shhhh. The Penguin King is a good guy. He’ll let you by the checkpoint. I promise.”

“No blood ties?” she murmured sleepily.

“No honey… Shhh.”

It felt good to comfort Willow, after all she remembered Willow doing for her. Selfless dedication and a willingness to look after her forever… Oh Willow, honey. I’m never going to let you go. Tara adjusted her position, pulling her love into her arms and holding her tight.

Why did Willow have such a crush on penguins though?

Always with the penguins… It was better than frogs though.

“I was made to love you my sweet,” Tara whispered and she saw the smile spread over Willow’s face again before she slipped deeper back into sleep and Tara’s mind turned back to more practical matters.

What were they…? Well they had to…? How…? What were they going to do with the body? Buffy’s body… They couldn’t very well tell the police so… They couldn’t really bury her in the cemetery. Besides, the vampires might not let her rest forever. They might take their revenge. No. Buffy had to be laid to rest somewhere that was free of disturbance and intervention by monster or the authorities. It had to be a secret and it had to be soon.

On the other hand they had to tell her Dad, Dawn’s dad too. After all… In his mind it might be a tough love that had seen him abandon his daughters… but there had to be some love there didn’t there? How could he not love them? He might have forgotten he had… but… surely not.

If they did tell him though – what if he started to feel that Dawn should be with him? They were the ones who were her family, but he was the one with the legal rights… If they told him then there would be a spiral that led down into Dawn having to leave with him when neither of them wanted to.

Tara knew very well what the difference between blood family and real family was. This was her real family and they’d lost someone tonight. She knew that, to Dawn, it would be like the weight of the world was pushing down on her… but… all they could do was help her with that. It was what they had to do, for Buffy.

It was… the gift families had. Real families.

That and love.

She huddled up to Willow and tried to find sleep.

First of all Katharyn that was bloody brilliant :D Thank you. I loved how you worked all the titles into it and the story was really great. I was particularly impressed with Goodbye Iowa.

Domaris.

Please feel free to adjust the challenge to what you believe. I don't mind Katharyn not writing for season 6 as it finished for her at the Gift and for some it finishes at Entropy.

If I had to set rules I would like to see Smashed etc included although not the pt1 pt2 of Barganning...maybe a reference to two parts though?

The titles can go anywhere in the story. They just have to be in order. Katharyn was good enough to use up to The gift so here are the episodes from there onwards.

Bargaining, afterlife, life serial, all the way, once more with feeling, tabula rasa, smashed, wrecked, dead things, older and far away, hells bells, normal again, entropy and seeing red.

I hope that answers some of your questions :)

Have fun.

Wow Kathayrn, I saw the challenge this morning and thought maybe a fic in the line of W&T "reviewing" their own roles in the show. A little weird and influenced by something I saw (but cannot remember) but what I love about this is that you actually wrote a good, 'nice' fic too. I am not sure I read a fic about the night Tara comes back to Willow before. You are constrained by needing to go from title to title (and yeah Goodbye Iowa is well done) but you also capture something nice here. Tara, worried about Dawn and other people even after what she has been through.

Its a shame you didn't do S6 titles simply because I would have loved some more from you and, apart from the names, it wouldn't have been anything to do with that season but I totally respect your reasons. I even agree with them.

Well done.

Right lets see a few more idea's

Re: Fanfic challenge

Postby whitewiccan » Sun May 25, 2003 11:34 pm

Summary: Set a few days after The Gift. Willow writes a letter to Tara to let her know how she’s feeling.

Note: Thoughts are in <>. Episode titles are in capitals. The titles I couldn’t manage were Checkpoint and Bargaining

Willow walked into the dorm she shared with Tara. She had just finished a day full of classes.

After the funeral, she decided she should start attending classes to take her mind off things, and Tara agreed with her.

She wasn’t sure how long she could hold it together. She missed Buffy so much, but she didn’t show it, because she was still helping Tara adjust to having her sanity back.

She was scared of telling Tara her feelings. So she her desk, and began to write.

< Oh god, what if she thinks I’m being stupid by feeling like this. Oh HUSH brain!>

Tara,

I know you probably think its lame for me to write a letter. But there are a few things I need to tell you that I don’t think I would be able to say to your face.

Things are just so weird right now. I miss Buffy so much. I look at how upset everyone is, and I keep thinking that Buffy will make it all better, and then I remember she’s dead.

It’s just not fair. I mean, I know everyone has to deal with it in their own way, but I can’t believe Giles just up and left for England the day after it happened, he didn’t even stay for the funeral!

I know you think he’s going to be like A NEW MAN when he gets back, but I just don’t see that happening. He looked broken. I tried to get him to stay, that we needed to stick together and be a team, but he wouldn’t listen.

I felt like screaming in his ear THERE’S NO I IN TEAM! But I don’t think he would have noticed but I expected him to stick around for Dawn.

Poor Buffy. It just isn’t fair that it happened to her. She had such a terrible year, with Glory and finding out about Dawn.

And Riley didn’t help. It was like GOODBYE IOWA boy, hello self pity boy. I can’t believe he just left her like that. I supposed they were really doomed after the whole Faith/Buffy body swap.

The night Faith came to him in Buffy’s body, he should have known. He should have been able to look in her eyes and say “WHO ARE YOU?” But he didn’t.

The whole thing with her mom was awful. The night Joyce went into hospital, Buffy called me and we talked for hours.

She said things to me like “This year is not good for Summers girls.” And then she paused, I could hear her trying to hold back her tears.

“But no, this years Buffy isn’t going to breakdown. THIS YEARS GIRL is gonna be tough for her family.” I never said this to her, but when she said those words I was proud to call her my best friend.

Poor Xander, he hasn’t even cried. He’s acting like a SUPERSTAR, The kind that never shows their emotions.

But he doesn’t need to be embarrassed. This must be so hard on him, I mean; he was in love with Buffy for such a long time.

It’s not just us that are going to suffer. Sunny-Dale, the place WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, now has no slayer.

Y’know, the night Buffy died, I saw a NEW MOON RISING, and I guess I would have smiled if I hadn’t been so upset.

It’s weird how much we grew apart last year, Buffy, Xander, Giles and me. It was like THE YOKO FATOR, new people come into our lives, and we drifted apart.

And that whole dream thing with the PRIMEVIL slayer freaked me out too. It was like all my insecurities were there at once. That caused me a lot of RESTLESS nights.

But things got better again last year. After the whole BUFFY V’S DRACULA thing, she was on this mission to find (this was in her own words to me) “THE REAL ME.” Things seemed kinda stressed with Buffy and Riley though.

I think he thought that after Angel, he was just THE REPLACEMENT.

She told me how that she had wanted to taste Dracula’s blood, and then she asked me “am I going OUT OF MY MIND?” I really didn’t know what to say to her.

She also talked about getting out of Sunnydale, but after finding out about Dawn, I think she realise that there’s NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

After that whole thing when we found out you thought you were a demon, and then finding out you weren’t, I think we realised that we really are a true FAMILY.

And seeing your face at your party, the way you smiled and acted, I realised what a FOOL FOR LOVE I really am, in a good way.

And then, days later we found out that Buffy’s mom had a SHADOW on her brain.

Listening to the doctor tell her must have been like LISTENING TO FEAR for Buffy.

And then Joyce went from being out of the woods, to being INTO THE WOODS. It must have been so hard for them all.

And then Xander, Anya and me got into this stupid TRIANGLE, and I know you think I’m being silly, but I really don’t think she’s good enough for him.

And then Dawn found out she was the key. After the whole mess with Glory, I think Buffy realised that even though Dawn isn’t originally human, they do have BLOOD TIES.

Then Spike went and made thing worse by declaring his love for Buffy.

Afterward, Buffy told me he had said to her “I WAS MADE TO LOVE YOU Buffy.” I thought it was really pathetic, but he did prove it to her by not telling Glory who the key was. And I think Xander took the whole Spike loving Buffy thing worse by finding out that Dawn didn’t have a CRUSH on him anymore, but on Spike.

And then came the worst news. Joyce died. She was this happy; full of life woman, then all that was left was THE BODY.I Know nobody lives FOREVER, but I expected her to live a lot longer than that.

And then Spike made things worse yet again by getting that stupid Buffy robot. We all thought it was her, and that it was INTERVENTION time again. But he made up for it by being loyal to Buffy and Dawn. It made me realise that love, no matter what kind of love, is TOUGH LOVE.

And then you were taken from me. Your mind was stolen, and I keep thinking at the time I could have stopped it. But there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t move. I’ll never get the image of Glory’s hands in you brain out of my head.

A few days later, things went into a SPIRAL. Glory knew Dawn was the key, and we had to run away.

But Buffy won. She had carried the WEIGHT OF THE WORLD on her shoulders for so long, and then she realised she had THE GIFT. The gift to give life where there is death. She saved all our lives by ending hers.

I know people say that after death, there is AFTERLIFE, but I don’t know. Buffy could be suffering in hell for what she did, and that just isn’t right. And poor Dawn has to stay at Xander and Anya’s. She can’t even be in her own house because it got FLOODED.

Her life could be a soap opera. They could call it LIFE SERIAL. People would see that all the bad things came at once for her, and that there was no good.

I hate her dad. He doesn’t even care about her. I feel lke going ALL THE WAY to Spain and knocking him out.

There was a point to this letter, and I’m going to get to it. I love you Tara Maclay, never forget that. It’s like at the end of a really good musical, the audience says “Say it again, ONCE MORE WITH FEELING!” Well that’s what I’m gonna do. I love you Tara Maclay.

I saw a new spell the other day, called TABULA RASA. It’s a spell the makes everyone forget all their pain, and I’m ashamed to say I thought about doing it. Everything now is bad; it’s all SMASHED, WRECKED, and GONE.

I got really upset when I drove past the DOUBLEMEAT PALACE yesterday. Buffy loved the food their, we used to go all the time in high school. I visited her grave yesterday. It was horrible. I hate cemeteries; they’re just full of DEAD THINGS.

I wish Giles would call. It’s like he thinks he’s OLDER AND FAR AWAY, so we don’t need him, but we do.

I’m so happy I got your sanity back baby, I’m so pleased that you’re AS YOU WERE.

At the funeral, Dawn said that the bells of heaven would be playing, and Anya said to me, "more like HELLS BELLS", and I’m worried that she’s right. Buffy could be in Hell.

I wish things were NORMAL AGAIN.

Anya really bugged me the other day; she kept going on about how she beat Xander at scrabble with the word ENTROPY. I really felt like beating her up.There are more important things going on right now than Scrabble!

I keep having this weird dream that I’m SEEING RED, and i don't know what it means.

Oh well, at least most of Sunny-dales VILLAINS have been staying away.

I’m glad we got through to Dawn, just Xander and Spike left now, only TWO TO GO. Oh well, that’s all I’m gonna say now baby, I’ve got to go, Xander and me are going to visit Buffy’s GRAVE.

I love you.

Your Willow.

OK guys, I’m very impressed by how you’re able to incorporate the episode titles so easily into your stories. There may have been a little manipulating by extending tough and love over two sentences, but it works and that’s all that matters. You even managed to fit the Yoko Factor without really forcing things. I was wondering how you were going to fit entropy into the mix, but you managed to insert it seamlessly into the text. Excellent job!

Whitewiccan - no extra credit for including Villains, Two to Go and Grave. Heh.

Tiggr, not only did you meet the challenge but you wrote a very sweet story as well. Reading anything that takes place around the time period of Family always makes me feel good. Thank you.

Kathryn, you’re absolutely right about the series ending in season five, so you’re well within your rights to alter the terms of the challenge to fit your criteria. :)
