Thanatopsis - I think you're right about Tara, she is energised by her anger, which is probably quite a liberating experience for her. And Willow, I agree, now that she's starting to deal with what happened, she's on eggshells and probably is not ready yet for the release of being in any way angry or resentful about how she was treated. She's probably scared to be angry about Tara's death at the moment too, just grateful to have her back, even as a vampire.

As for "Clockwork Orange" I haven't read the book, I just assumed that like the film it was set in England. I plead ignorance.

Just catching up here. Interesting that Willow had a waver in faith in vamp Tara... i think in some ways it is wise. Also yes, a clockwork orange is a good parallel to what they have done to her here. Thanks for the updates!

Tara's eyes once again found Willow's in the rearview mirror. "Don't worry. I've got your back.

Hello Xita and may I saw firstly how nice it has to have that simply beautiful avatar back again on this thread! Secondly thanks for your wonderful work in San Diego.

I can imagine you would have got a bit behind with this story, being so busy and all. I am firmly committed to second daily updates for at least the next three weeks, and I'll review after then. I'm getting over a tiny hump in the drafts at the moment, after which it should be reasonably plain sailing to the end. I hope.

As for your comments - Willow having moments of doubt. Wise and probably also necessary. Poor Willow's undergoing a lot of changes at the moment.

**Stumbles in sleepily to give you a bit of feed**

Interesting update, B. Hee.. Tara and her "Blimey bastard," comment. I was kinda shocked she said that. I hate that she directed it at Giles though, but I understand why. And I agree with what you said, if Tara was to ever confront him about it, I think she would be find a chill in her already chilled body... hmmm, that sounded better in my head. :lol

And that mysterious voice, appearing from the shadows. I have my suspicions on who it might be, but I'll just wait and see if I'm right.

I'm glad Willow is letting Tara look deeper into her aura to see if she can help her. It's sad that Willow has to have all of that pain trapped inside though. :( I really feel bad for her and what they did to her.

Oh, I almost forgot. The Tara coming back thing, is it a wish or not?? I'm still very curious about that and can't wait to find out how you explain that.

Looking forward to more. ;)

Thank you,

Jen

Edited to add: Tara in leather AND blue jeans. :drool :thud

Jen: What a substantial piece of feedback, thank you. Gosh, another vote for Tara in the leather coat. Fainting, drooling emoticons and all! That woman has a profound effect.

Tara cross with Giles - extremely cross! How dare those people do that to my Willow! Giles of all people! It's a heady combination of Tara's emotions and vampTara's anger. Believe me, she's thought vastly worse things about Giles, she's actually showing some restraint.

I'm sure you know exactly who has hailed W/T from the shadows. I think even the "two favourite ladies" bit could be a partial quote, I haven't bothered to check. ( just checked - it was "Triangle" and the quote is "two favourite girls", but that's a bit patronising)

Wish or not? Willow obviously still thinks so, Tara is questioning. Sad to say, readers won't know all the facts until Episode 8.

Take it easy, you Troll Hammer, you!

You are very welcome. :) Yes, she does have a profound effect, much like Aly in leather. :thud

Ooops, I said, blimey instead of limey... sorry about that. :blush I can understand her emotions and anger. Someone hurt her soulmate, so it's to be expected. I guess I was just taken by surprise though.

It was, "And how are my two favorite girls." I think ladies fits better though. Hee... cool, I was thinkinig of the right person. ;)

I'm questioning right along with Tara too. I think she could have been on to something, thinking the way she did, but I'll be patient to find out if I'm right. WOW... episode 8, huh?

Hee... I won't go hit anyone with my hammer. I'll be good. :grin

Episode 5 "New Star Rising" Part 2

Postby Bagheera » Thu Aug 08, 2002 2:32 am

Jen: You are, as ever, most welcome. Here's an update.

Rating: MA15. Caution: This update contains material which may offend. Sorry.

Willow turned, recognised the speaker and smiled. “Oh, hey Xander.” The redhead had to admit that Xander had been growing on her lately. Since Tara’s return, he had seemed less judgmental, more inclined to listen than to merely talk, more interested in her, Willow, as a person than as a work in progress towards some ill-defined goal. He still dropped into the Magic Box or around to Buffy’s just as often as before, but Will found the visits much more welcome, less of a trial or an examination. A couple of times at Buffy’s, when Willow had been recovering from her mystical therapy sessions with Tara, Xander had engaged the “bot” in single conversation, keeping his promise about getting to know Tara properly, while the redhead rested in bed. Willow had spoken with Tara about it. The vampire’s opinion was that Xander was relieved that there was someone else around to help look after Willow, and that as a consequence the young man was feeling less pressured and more able to be himself. Though there was still no sign about what Xander intended to do with his own life; his relationship with Anya remained in a curious limbo, neither reconciling nor breaking apart completely.

Willow detached herself from Tara and stepped over to her childhood friend, embracing him warmly. She stepped back and the smile faded from her face as, in the lamplight, she caught sight of the faint scars on Xander’s face, another of the legacies of her episode of madness. Xander in turn noticed the sudden distress on the redhead’s face.

“Will? What’s up?” he asked.

The redhead reached out and gently touched the healed injuries. “Did it hurt much?” she asked.

“What? These? Nah.”

“But seeing me like that, all evil and veiny, that hurt…a lot?”

“Losing you was what hurt, Will. And Tara.” The construction worker glanced over at Tara, who gently smiled back.

“I’m so sorry, Xander,” Willow whispered, hugging him again.

“It’s okay,” he hugged her back. Holding the redhead at arm’s length, he smiled thinly and continued, “Can we move away from the awful depressing past for a second? Opening night tonight?”

“Yep,” Willow and Tara said in unison.

“All prepared?” Xander asked. Tara nodded, Willow shrugged.

“Why don’t you come with?” Tara suggested. “It’d be cool if you were there.”

“Hooking up with the Buffster first on patrol, but once that’s done and dusted, I’ll be there,” Xander promised.

“Great,” Willow smiled. “See you.” They said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.

“He’s definitely improving,” Tara commented as they walked on.

“All down to you,” Willow replied, taking her lover’s hand once more. “Getting back to the subject of Hellmouth evil, if you really think that’s what’s going on, should we be going out after dark like this?”

Tara tossed her head and frowned. “Not much choice for me I’m afraid. And if it’s just vamps, I am so not scared of them.” Half a block ahead, she suddenly noticed three young men walking towards them. The vampire hissed quietly.

Willow whispered, “What? Trouble? Are they vampires?”

“They’re human, just a little drunk,” Tara replied in an undertone. “It’s cool - I think.”

The men were almost upon them, and both Tara and Willow felt uncomfortable under their too-long glances. Tara watched them out of the corner of her eye as they passed, tensing up as she noticed one of them whistling softly through his teeth. Willow seemed a bit more relaxed. She turned to Tara and whispered in her ear, “Those guys are checking you out.”

“What are they looking at?” the vampire responded, suspiciously.

“The hotness of you, doofus!”

Suddenly, behind them, one of the men called out in a raucous voice, blurred by beer and too many cigarettes, “Hey babes! Show us yer hooters!”

Tara stopped in her tracks, put down the flight case, and slowly turned. The trio had also stopped a few yards away and had half turned about, perhaps a little astonished at their own bravado, awaiting a response. Still in her human face but nevertheless vaguely menacing, Tara looked them up and down and replied, “And what if we do?”

“We’ll show you our balls,” one of them smirked.

Tara, suddenly in vampire face, snarled, “And maybe I’ll rip them off!” Shocked, the men stood frozen to the spot, unsure what was happening.

Willow heart leapt into her throat as she saw the change come over Tara. She shouted a warning to the guys to back off and quickly placed herself between Tara and the trio, shielding them from the vampire’s wrath. “Tara! Honey, wait, you don’t want to do anything stupid. They’re idiots, don’t…” She put her hands to Tara’s face and caressed the vampire’s temples and cheeks. Tara placed her tense trembling hands on the redhead’s shoulders.

One of the guys laughed. “Hey, man, I think they’re a couple of dykes. Can I get my camera from my car, girls? ‘Cos, we like porny.”

Utterly enraged, Tara roared at them. Panicked and hyperventilating, Willow screamed at the men to run. Tara lowered her predatory yellow eyes and smiling coldly, looked into Willow’s wide terrified greens. “I want the boys,” she grinned.

Behind her, Willow heard shuffling footsteps, as the guys slowly came to their senses and began to appreciate the danger they were in. But, petrified, the redhead could feel the almost tetanic tension in Tara muscles, about to explode into violence. She knew the vampire could sweep her aside in an instant. She had to do something! “Tara! Stop, baby, stop, oh please Tara you so don’t want to do this!” she babbled. “Why don’t we just keep walking, we’re going out for a nice evening, yes, we’re out to have a lovely time, just the two of us, it’s opening night and everything and they’re all gonna be waiting for us and we don’t want to be late. Forget the guys, they’re drunk and stupid and they didn’t know what they were saying and they’ll have forgotten it by morning anyway. Tara! No!” Willow’s voice rose to a shriek as she sensed the vampire about to spring into action to chase down the retreating men. “Tara! Honey, please! Stop!” It all seemed useless; Tara’s fangs were bared and she uttered a final malevolent snarl. Utterly desperate, Willow shouted, “No! Tara! Calma!

Liking your story quite a bit. Question though, Willow cast w/ the word 'calma', don't remember that from Latin, but the obvious assumption is it means calm. Is this the case? Since what she cast can be telling as to the influence & intent involved. It appears that the magicks are still w/i her, but which kind? Got me hanging on that one. Waiting for the update.

Will - Okay, I think that was the response I was looking for - unless you're saying that as a way of passing judgement. ;)

Xita - Thanks, your question will be answered next update.

Bethany - Hi! Nice to hear from you again. " Calma" is actually Italian and it does mean "calm" or "relax", I must confess I learned the word from watching "Allegro non Troppo" about 50 million times when I was younger. Italian, Latin, close enough. I mean, spells don't have to be always in Latin do they?

snuggle79 - Thank you. Two things are going on here: firstly, Tara is a vampire, and I've dropped a few hints in previous updates (Buffy reporting how aggressively Tara fought the vamps, Tara angrily calling Giles a "limey bastard") about the violent nature that is within her. You really, really, don't want to get her angry. Oh gosh, I just realised I'm ripping off "The Incredible Hulk" here - unintentionally I assure you! As for what Willow did - see above; "calma" = Italian for "Calm!" But will it work??

Those guys shouldn't have ever started messing with Tara or Willow. Not a good idea. I just hope, somehow, she will listen to Will and calm down, or at least not go after them.

And I'm also very interested to see what the opening night thing is all about. :party

No, spells certainly don't have to always be in Latin. Especially if the cast-er has studied Strega, Italian witchcraft. Greek also popular for spells. I just wanted to be sure of intent. Thanks for the answer. Anxious for update.

Beth - Thank you for the offer, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Rating: PG13 Angst

Instantly, the vampire was gone and it was just Tara’s face again, her eyes sane and soft, without a trace of anger. The blonde leant in and kissed Willow, taking the redhead’s lip between her own and squeezing it gently and sensuously. Tara put her arm around Willow and drew her closer, deepening the kiss, sighing.

At first Willow returned the kiss, but then she stopped and drew back. The redhead opened her eyes and looked at Tara’s face, then her face turned pale as she realised what she had just done. She put a hand to her open mouth. “Oh my god,” Will groaned. “Oh my god!”

Tara blinked and shook her head as the momentary reverie left her. She noticed Willow’s distress, and the calm look on her face was at once replaced by one of concern. “Willow, Willow! Stop! Here, sit down, rest a moment. It’s going to be okay.” Tara sat Willow down on the concrete kerb and looked with worry at the redhead’s ashen face, for Will was gasping for breath like a marathon runner and her clammy skin was almost as pale as Tara’s own bloodless integument. The vampire took Willow’s hand in hers and held it tightly, cursing that she had no warmth of her own to share with her lover. “Will, talk to me. C’mon, honey…”

“I did a spell on you!” Willow gasped, ashamed. She looked the blonde vampire up and down and shuddered. “Now I understand why Giles took me to England. I needed to have the magic taken out of me. I can’t control it, look at me! My first spell in months - and I cast a spell on you…” Willow sank her aggrieved head against the firm cool leather of Tara’s shoulder. “I’m a bad, worthless nobody, that’s what I am. All I’ll ever do is hurt people. Did you see Xander’s face tonight, he’ll be scarred for the rest of his life. I did that to him. And I tried to kill my best friend. And Dawnie…I was so horrible to her, how can she bear to be under the same roof as me? And you, the one person I love above everybody else, you’re not back in my life for five minutes and I’m casting spells on you again, and I know it’s only the beginning, the spells’ll get bigger and more abusive, and you’ll leave me and Giles will take me back - to England.”

“I think this is proof that my wish brought you back,” Willow continued miserably. “It’s because I’m such a bad person that when I wished you back, you came back as a vampire. It was probably to punish me that you got killed in the first place. I mean, if I was good, don’t you think that I would’ve got you back, alive, if I’d wished hard enough?” Willow raised her aching red-rimmed eyes and looked fearfully into the soft blue eyes of her lover. But all that she saw there was love and forgiveness.

“Willow,” Tara murmured, entwining her fingers with the redhead’s and leaning close to her, forehead to forehead. “I’ve not felt so in love with you, since I came back, than now. What can I say about the spell you cast on me except, ‘thank you’? It was actually rather nice. And as for everything else, it’s just guilt. Guilt you should have been feeling months ago and dealt with, instead of going to England and being turned into Stepford Willow. If you’re feeling the way you say you are, then I say - good! You’re more like my Willow than ever.”

“But - but magic, Tara. Magic. I did a spell. It’s all going to come back and I won’t be able to control it. And you’ll leave me… I’ll die if you leave me again…”

“Do you see how much I’m not leaving you? Do you mind if I test you? How would you like to cast a spell for me right now?”

“No! No, I don’t want to!” Willow said emphatically.

The vampire smiled. “You see why I’m not worried? You’re the Willow who can do magic, but you choose -” Tara emphasised the word, “- not to.”

“There are so many sorts of magic,” Tara continued, half to herself, looking up at the Big Pineapple as it wheeled overhead. The vampire stroked her lover’s red hair with one hand and held Willow’s limp trembling paw in the other. “There’s magic to help you see things more clearly, divinations and true seeing spells. There’s magic for fighting, fire and iron. There’s magic for silly fun. There’s black, evil magic. And there’s magic for emergencies, to stop people from dying. You saved those idiots’ lives tonight and I bet they don’t even know it.”

“You think?” Willow sniffed.

“Yeah, I think. And you spoiled my fun,” Tara said with an evil little smile. “When I get you home tonight, I’m going to torment you in half a dozen different ways for that.”

“Please don’t make fun of me,” Willow whispered.

“Sorry. I’m evil, I’m big with the teasing. Now, would you like to stand up and go for a little walk with me? We’re almost at the Espresso Pump and we’ve both been looking forward to this so much.”

“And you’re not mad at me for casting a spell on you?”

“A thousand times, no. Will, we’re both struggling here. I help you when I can, you help me. You did the right thing tonight.” Tara hoisted herself to her feet and gave Willow a hand up. The vampire picked up the flight case and they walked on. “If anything, I should be apologising to you.” Willow said nothing but flashed Tara a quizzical look. Tara continued, “I promised I wouldn’t hurt you; we go out and the first bad, stupid thing that happens, I’m about to rip three guys’ lungs out and punt them around like footballs, I force you to do a spell to stop it happening and now you’re suffering and hurting yourself. Tell you what, if we both say sorry, can we just leave it there and move on?”

Willow walked in step with Tara, holding her hand, thinking. “Well, okay,” she said at last, “but only if we put the blame where it belongs; with those three jerks.”

“Works for me,” Tara said. “I’m sorry I nearly lost it back there, and thank you for being around to help me.”

“I’m sorry I used magic on you without your consent,” Willow answered, “and thank you for being so wise and understanding. Now, kiss me again. Properly.” In much improved mood, the duo walked on.

The proprietor of the Espresso Pump was Ray, a wiry energetic little man in his mid forties with graying curly ginger hair. Bulging green eyes flitted nervously in his freckled and weatherworn face. Willow had been on a first name basis with him since high school. Indeed, she and Buffy used to joke about how their mocha habits had financed two of Ray’s last three vacations. He greeted Willow and Tara in his usual curt but not unfriendly manner as they arrived. The coffee shop was half full, a decent crowd for midweek. Ray pointed out the chair under the single spotlight. Tara nodded, opened the flight case, took out the guitar and sat. She tuned the instrument and looked around briefly at the largely indifferent patrons. The vampire caught Willow’s eye, and the redhead flashed a quick smile that was two parts nervousness and three parts encouragement. Tara clipped a capo onto the guitar’s neck and began to play.

First off, let me just say, Tara singing... :drool Mmmm.. too bad we can't hear it. I just love Amber's voice. :love (Edited, cause I just went back and re-read this) She is going to sing right, or just play?? Sorry, I kinda assumed. :(

Okay... WOW... quite an update there, B.

I actually didn't think Willow's spell was going to work. I'm glad it did though. It's bad that she did magic on Tara, but I'm in Tara's camp with saying it was an emergency/necessary thing to do. I hate to think what Tara would have done, if she hadn't done it.

This was just a very powerful update here. Poor Will. She's struggling so much. I'm glad Tara reacted the way she did though. I was kinda worried about that. And Tara... it just goes to show how unique her demon is. I really like her characteristics, away from the evil streak. I think they are both learning that they can help each other get past this and try to move on from it.

I'm just loving this, so much. It's cool how far they have come, both of them, in such a short period of time.

Can't wait to see what happens next. ;)

eccentrictulip - Tara's a musical vampire, there'll be a bit of music from here on in.

Jen - Hi! Tara will play the intro, then she'll sing. I don't think that's really a spoiler. Yes, I agree re: Amber's voice. This gives me a chance to have her cover a few of my fave songs and make them even better - sigh. I take on board all your comments about : -->>: - :tara - thank you very much.

Jessica - Thanks very much. Urm,

Tara should have went ahead and mutilated those guys, but that would have been wrong
Sort of a "could've, should've, didn't" moment, huh? Well, : -->>: - :tara sure wanted to rip them apart, but OTOH, Willow had to do everything in her power to stop it.

snuggle79 - Thanks. It wouldn't have seemed right to me if :tara had gotten all angry and resentful at :willow for almost inadvertently doing a spell in what was essentially an emergency. I liked the idea of her being so understanding and forgiving. And we know that :tara , even : -->>: - :tara , is wise.

A black shadow dropped down into the circle. It was Bagheera

YAY!!! She WILL sing. I so can't wait. Amber's voice is just so... sultry, is that a good word to describe it?? I just love it. :love Can't wait to see what songs she's going to sing, too. I'm sure she could do any song, justice.

You are very welcome, for the comments. ;) Looking forward to more. :)

Have a good weekend,

Jen

Thanks, I love my Otep avatar. My name I'm not too fond of, kinda one of those I-need-a-name-really-fast-but-I've-lost-my-brains things.

Ooh, I want Tara to play the guitar for me! Hmm poor Willow she did cast a spell. I hope she can handle the magic this time. And Tara's going to have to deal with her vampire temper.
