to be quite honest there has been plenty of attention paid to the dead/evil lesbian cliche, the celluloid closet got lots of play on cable and there is at least one other book coming out on the subject. ME Producers and Writers are aware and have been aware.
[/quote:3accc8fdaf]

I had never heard of the dead/evil lesbian cliche until after Tara was killed. And now I'm aware of it. Now I'll be more likely to recognize it in books, other tv shows, movies, etc. Several of my friends were not aware of the dead/evil lesbian cliche until I told them about it. Now they're aware of it as well. And there are hundreds (if not thousands) of people on the internet who are claiming they weren't aware of the cliche. But now they know about it. So at least something positive (even if it is a small thing) has come out of Tara's death.

Hellcat and Sparrow,

First, thanks so much for your reports, pics and perspective. I can safely say that nothing has changed for me and how I feel about Whedon & this show now. I do not trust them, they just do not get it!

Can you give us specifics on why Whedon feels his decision to kill Tara to further the story was the right way to go creatively? What exactly does he mean by that?

Thanks so much! You guys rock!

Thanks Hellcat, sparrow, and everyone else who brought detailed information from the event yesterday. I too am glad that at least they finally realized their flippant/crass comments (regarding the death of Tara) were uncalled for. Or in other words, that ME should show some respect to the fans, especially considering they showed no respect/dignity for the way Tara died (and there after), as well as they way ME acted up until recently when talking about this subject matter. Of course this no way excuses their lies/manipulations, but I am so tired of their rude comments.

As for Amber and her contract status if it is indeed a 2 episode contract than we will see ghost Tara telling Willow its time to move on :puke ! However, with both Amber's and Aly's comments I truly believe we will probably get AU Tara. It's not what I want, but hopefully if we ever get official confirmation on if/how many episodes we can finally figure out what Amber will be playing, and how this affects Willow's story. Of course this could all be spin to keep us watching in hope of seeing Amber, and with that in mind I hope soon we learn either way (yes she is coming back for x number of episodes of no Tara is dead). I am tired of the guessing game, and really have no desire to think about this all summer!

I would have preferred the yellow crayons bit left out of Xander's patronising speech. It was so vomit-inducing.

Thank you for the reports, Hellcat!

Oh, and I see Marti still pregnant. This must be the longest pregnancy in history.

Can we avoid jumping too heavily onto the "one or two ep" wagon just yet? I would not want bitterness at the supposed implications to dominate the board for no more reason than we had yesterday.

With no disrespect to Sparrow but this is hardly a confirmed or known source. Remember the caution we showed last year... and with damn good reason. We can thank Sparrow when it is proven correct. Until then.. a healthy skepticism. It is easy to think the worst... cos we are already in the worst place.

Not that I am convinced there is a "better" to think of either... Just no reason yet.

Neither better or worse than "1 or 2 eps" I am saying. We [b:c2b2fef43a]know[/b:c2b2fef43a] nothing new and till then this is just feeding the spec/spoiler machine that ME thrives on based on very little.

One or two episodes huh? <sigh> Just as well no-one got their hopes up too high then. Sounds like the whole ghost Tara "Willow you must move on" nightmare is about to come true.

Edited to say: Thanks everyone for all their reports/info/pics.

RE: knowledge of lesbian cliche, I kind of figure if a st8 middle class american knew of it then everyone in hollyweird would <G>

well at least we raised sci fi wires conscience

"In a separate interview, Whedon reaffirmed for SCI FI Wire that Amber Benson, who played Tara, will return next year, though her character died at the end of this season. But when asked to elaborate that Benson would return, but not as Tara, Whedon replied, "I'm not saying a word about that."

Buffy Season 7 Spoiled

Joss Whedon, creator of UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, revealed plot spoilers for the upcoming seventh season of the series during a panel discussion at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles June 18. The fall season premiere begins with the grand reopening of Sunnydale High School, which was destroyed a couple of seasons back, Whedon told the audience.

"The reopening of the high school is where we're starting, and it represents a lot of what we're talking about in terms of getting back to the very first mission statement of the show, which was the joy of female power: Having it, using it, sharing it," Whedon said.

Willow (Alyson Hannigan) will have to pay for skinning Warren at the end of this season, the show's sixth, Whedon added. "There are consequences for everything," he said. "Not to the point where she'll spend all day crying, 'I'm so sad, why, why?' But she will have to deal with this. We don't let people get away with things, unless there's a reason. Giles, the year before, killed a person, but nobody found out."

In a separate interview, Whedon reaffirmed for SCI FI Wire that Amber Benson, who played Tara, will return next year, though her character died at the end of this season. But when asked to elaborate that Benson would return, but not as Tara, Whedon replied, "I'm not saying a word about that."

Whedon did tell SCI FI Wire that Willow's addiction to magic and Spike's (James Marsters) attempted rape would figure in the new season, despite an intention to lighten the tone from this year's dark themes. "We'll deal with issues, but we won't be hitting the incredibly depressing reality of being grown up quite so hard," he said. "Those things will still be issues, because Spike is still in the mix, and he did try to rape Buffy. Willow has been addicted, and both of those people have to be in the mix, so we'll deal with the things, and things are still going to be scary, depressing and confusing for our characters. It's going to be tough for them, but at the same time, they're going to reclaim that essential notion of the beauty of power and of their mission and not get so caught up in the questions."

Whedon added that he wants Anthony Stewart Head to appear as Giles in more episodes this season than last, and that he hopes to bring back Jonathan (Danny Strong) and Andrew (Thomas Lenk), the remaining duo of villains from this season. "We're looking for them to [return], because they make us laugh," he said.

One thing that won't be back is Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) job at the Doublemeat Palace. "Doublemeat Palace was the only thing we ever did to make advertisers pull out," Whedon said. "They did not like us making fun of fast food. Sarah's very upset about not getting to wear the hat anymore."

Well, first, thank you for the pictures and the reports. Im just saddened, once again (thought I had moved on), by the comments I read from Joss and Co. One side of my brain understands where they are coming from in regards to their reasoning for Season Six, but, the other side is terribly disappointed. I feel like season six was an experiment to them. They moved away from all their usual metaphors and subtext to make everything real this season. The problem is, one, I hated most of it, and two, the results of what they did where horrific. Ive said it before, whatever they were trying to accomplish with season six failed in my eyes. Its like season six didnt fit in to the Buffyverse that I know. And now Im just suppose to move on while they go back to their formula and basics for next season? No, I think not!

I suppose Im just still entirely disappointed in the story, and their comments after the season ended. But I guess when you put as much of yourself into something your bound to be hurt more when it disappoints.

Oh, and again, all I see is Joss being off on Firefly and taking all the long term staff. Just shows hes abandoned Buffy I dont care how much spin he puts on it!

I believe that was the ethos of the spartans xita
you were punished not for doing something wrong but for getting caught. if not caught, then praised not punished

I think whedons problem is he has no real moral center of his own to draw on, he has commented on not really having a religion/concept of soul etc true? and none the less he is playing with these very charged issues/moral concepts on screen even though he hasn't thought them out

much like he has played with the lesbian issue without doing his homework or at least learning anything from the information in front of him

to jail faith and not willow is unconscienable

What also gets me is the part "He hopes to bring back Jonathan (Danny Strong) and Andrew (Thomas Lenk), the remaining duo of villains from this season. We're looking for them to [return], because they make us laugh, he said."

Oh Jonathan were a laugh riot (not)! So Willow needs to pay for everything she has done, but the dumb villains get a free pass, how does this make sense? And I can so see it now Jonathan reformed sitting at a scooby meeting with Willow at his right. I guess Willow will have to forget that little detail about wanting to kill him too, or the fact that indirectly (in regards to the actual murder, not the other evil plans) he was cahoots with the man who killed her soul-mate.

I'd say it was worse than 'indirectly in cahoots'! They worked together for the whole season, plotting to do all sorts of horrible things... if Willow has to repent, so do they! Back to jail with them!

Hallelujah! I've been thinking that for [b:d4f9f5c5de] months[/b:d4f9f5c5de] now, and haven't said so because I thought it was just me being the wacky member of the "Christian Left" that I am. :shy

In his book, [i:d4f9f5c5de] The New Man[/i:d4f9f5c5de], Thomas Merton wrote about something he called "Promethean Mysticism," which he described as a viewpoint in which the struggle between life and death has only one issue to it - "a glorious defiance in the assertion of our despair." It's what happens when people have no moral center - whether that moral center is based in Christianity, Buddhism, the secular humanism embraced by Gene Roddenberry, whatever. Something has to be there. Otherwise, a person gets caught up in a way of thinking that cannot believe that life is capable of winning out over death, and so tries instead to insist that the glorification of our certain defeat at the hands of death is somehow a victory in itself. Does that sound like the end of [i:d4f9f5c5de] Buffy[/i:d4f9f5c5de] Season 6 to you?

Anyway, on to more concrete matters at hand... thanks Hellcat for the write-up! I'm glad you feel a bit better about what happened to Tara. Unfortunately, I don't. Their saying it was a creative decision not meant to hurt anybody doesn't cut it. After all, Warren didn't mean to shoot Tara, and yet Tara's still dead, isn't she? In the same way, even if Joss didn't mean to hurt anybody, the fact remains that he did. If he wants the freedom to make his creative decisions, he should take responsibility for the consequences of those actions. So far, I don't see him or anybody else at Mutant Enemy doing that.

And bringing Amber back for only one or two episodes isn't going to cut it with me, either. The burden of proof is on Mutant Enemy to convince me why I should watch [i:d4f9f5c5de] Buffy[/i:d4f9f5c5de] again. So far, they haven't done that. Not even close.

This puts in all into perspective for me. He thinks that the reality of being grown up is incredibly depressing. Gosh, for me adolecence was much more depressing, and I think for most emotionally mature adults that is the case. And the things he showed this season like death and sexual violence/violation are not problems exclusive to grown ups. The man is seriously fucked up.

they may make HIM laugh, I on the other hand find them highly unfunny. They were obviously added to play to a tween male audience and as such are being kept for said audience appeal. I grew up long ago and poorly done attempts at crude slap stick tinged with rape/murder themes that denigrate women holds no appeal for me

Hair An. yes exactly, which is why I fear we are promoting the show rather than our cause by putting up pics of this event that are spread to other lists/sites

BBOG. glad to see that I wasn't the only one thinking this
The man has no place making a show targeting kids and heaven forbid his kiddie cartoon just got green lighted by WB which will tie the kids/build their demand for the live action show esp if the voice the cartoon with the buffy actors

Yeah, Hair Annoyed. It's clear now it's all about the money, no matter what his "artistic" vision.

Fox, controlling the purse strings, syas the Firefly pilot is crap? Whoa, new pilot!

Show him that advertisers don't like making fun of the cow/chicken experience? No more Doublemeat Palace!

Kill off the lesbian? Only lack of viewership, and thus sponsorship, might make a difference any more.

Not bitterness, here, just observation.

Behind the Scenes of BtVS

Postby KrisBo5 » Wed Jun 19, 2002 11:09 am

AutumnT suggested that I drop in on this discussion since I attended the little festivity last night at the Academy. So, . . .

First, let me say that I was present at the first BVS party thing when it was celebrated by The Museum of Radio & Television William S. Paley Festival after its 1st or 2nd year, so I knew what to expect. Or, should I say, I thought I knew what to expect.

The lights went down and they showed a 4-5 minute montage of clips from the show, particularly Season 6. Most had Sarah in htem, but there were big chunks with Xander/Anya, Dark Willow/Buffy, Spike/Buffy. Then the man who was the mod on CSI came out and talked about BVS and the nights moderator. And the show began. They all marched out and found their respective seats. Aly proceeded to try to put her Hello, my name is sticker on her shirt, then Nicholas, then it got stuck on the frills of her sleeve. Everyone laughed as she shook her arm all over; Nicholas finally peeled it off and stuck it on her seat.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Hellcat, the moderator, Janet Weeks of TV Guide was very bad; couldnt control the panel and sounded like a fan rather than someone there as a facilitator for the event. We were supposed to be able to ask questions and didnt get to. Also, the whole set-up, with her in the middle, forced the guests to look at her and not towards the audience. Very annoying. They also were given hand-mikes, instead of lapel-mikes, so they were fairly constrained in movement.

Her first question, about the Musical episode, sparked comments for quite sometime. Joss said Aly had said she wanted to sing and dance and kept bugging him, at which point, Aly raised her mike and said in a small voice, No. He said it did come out of the readings at his house and that James, from then on, constantly had his guitar and was very eager to sing. So he wrote a musical. He said he taylored all the songs not only to the performers, but also to existing sets. He said he thought it was fantastic and was impressed by everyone, cast on down to the crew. When asked about which person surprised him the most with hidden talent, Joss responded Emma Caulfield. They each talked about how scared they were, nervous about doing stuff like that, but once they started, they got into it. Michelle said that she cried cause she was upset that she had to sing, but when she finally did it, she felt better; she trusted Joss.

The tone of the season was brought up and he and Marti basically said, thats life, thats what we wanted and needed to explore; that they wanted to get their characters to certain places and to experience certain things and this is how they did it. Whoop-di-doo. Thanks ever so much! Joss said he felt he needed to explore dark things cause Buffy was resurrected, Willow was a junky, etc. Love and loss.

Sex was brought up. How graphic it was, etc. Joss said it had a purpose, particularly in Smashed, when Spike and Buffy have sex for the first time and the house falls down around them. He said it was a metaphor for her life, she was out of control and lost and sad. Okay. Some jokes were had about the sock James had to wear, that it got bigger or smaller depending on how cold the set was; also, that Sarah always had clothes on and laughed at him cause he didnt.

Tara was brought up. Silence and then a hum filled the auditorium. Joss looked up at the ceiling and Marti looked down, as did everyone else on the panel. He started talking about how hard it was to do it, but that he knew he had to, that it was right; it served his purpose of getting Willow from A to B (hes a smart man, he couldnt come up with something else???). He spoke about the gun, saying they brought up guns and how awful they are, in several previous episodes; then, Tara is killed by one, and it is the most human, mundane way to die. Joss and Marti both had comments about positive portrayals of gay couples on tv, and that they didnt believe they were killing Tara cause she was gay; just to serve the story. The moderator said, She couldnt have been wounded? And Nicholas said, She was. Just mortally. Ha Ha, very funny. It didnt go over very well. Aly was very quiet during this part, nodding every now and then, but her eyes were downcast for the most part. Everyone spoke very highly of Amber, how much they love her and miss her, how hard it was to lose her (are we surprised, Kitties?). When Michelle spoke with great affection and loss, Aly joked that Shes not really dead, and it lightened the moment briefly.

There was a lot of talk about how fantastic the writing is, and lots of praise for the DP. Aly and Michelle, and actually all of the cast, kissed up to the DP quite a bit, remarking that he can give them great light and make them all look wonderful, or give them bad light and make them look awful. To which, Joss commented, We didnt exactly hire dogs(or something like that).

About Spike. Another Angel. No, Joss said, we did that already, were still doing that, just on the WB. Spike is completely different and will go through stuff he never thought he would and James will be tested greatly.

Joss brought up The Trio, and mentioned Dark Willow killing Warren. Everyone clapped. Good on Alys performance and on her characters behavior. Joss said if any of the characters were like the writers, it was those three. He said they were the funnest villains and the discussions they had were pretty much what the writers talked about.

About Season 7. Yes, Sunnydale High will re-open and Dawn is the age that Buffy was when she became the Slayer. Hmm. She will get to wear black, high heels, and do some ass-kicking. Willow will have to face the consequences of killing Warren, but she wont be all weepy and guilty for the whole season(Joss is quoted as saying Tara is gone for good, Amber is not in an interview on SciFi Channel as well as Saturn Awards and such. He reiterated that they were going back to the original mission statement of female power, and that, although there would always be angst and heartache, it would not be as dark as this season was. Also, he said there would probably be more Giles, as The Watcher on the BBC has stalled production. Joss did say that he realized how much of an impact Anthony Head had on the show when he came back for the finale. Everyone clapped.

Nicholas said he cried when he watched Aly and Amber in Seeing Red, particularly the blood splatter and Alys reaction and sobbing. She seemed embarrassed by the attention but did tell the fun(if you can call it that) story about all the takes to get the splatter pattern correct; they only had 2 shirts and had to keep washing them; eventually she just wore a wet shirt and then did cry when the Cut! Print! was called.
Shes just so cute.

Then there was some mumble-jumble and Joss turned to the audience and said Someone ask a question. To which, Janet Weeks announced, No, sorry, thats it, were out of time. She didnt thank them, or the audience, or the Academy. She was bad. Then everyone went up to the stage and tried to get autographs. I shook Alexis Denisoffs hand and Marti, Joss, and most importantly, Alys. She is beautiful, and so people-friendly. Just not a single Im a star bone in her body.

I think that just about covers it, if I think of anything else, Ill drop it in later today or tonight.

KrisBo5

Frell that!

PS, if Amber were to come back for one or two episodes only, she would not be under contract. She would be considered a "Day Player" or "Weekly PLayer" Only for an extended period of time would they contract her, thus securing her services for the show and preventing her from signing to do something else.

Ok...I can't say or stress this enough. If they bring Jonathan and Andrew into the whole Scooby posse, and start to insinuate Johnathan as a possible love interest for Willow....I will blow chunks :puke :puke

I may be getting ahead of myself (as I think a lot of us are here), but damn! Just the thought of that is so insulting :mad
To introduce a new love interest period would be the height of stupidity, not to mention degrading to the memory of a wonderful relationship which really challenged current assumptions of lesbians/lesbian couples.

Of all the storylines to choose from, Johnathan at the right hand of Willow is absolutely the vilest.

Oh wait, Joss writes this stuff, correct? Vile it is, then.

You're right, we are, but what else can we do? In light of the fact that they're saying nothing, and given that what they do say may well turn out to be what we in the business call "a big fat lie", all that's left is rampant speculation or trusting in the people behind the show.

A year ago I wouldn't have had a problem with that last one.

I have to agree with Xita at this point. I don't trust ME as far as I can throw them, but I do have a little more faith in Amber and Aly, and do take a little comfort in what they say...I don't think Aly would say 'you never know' if something wasn't up, and I particularly don't think ' Amber would use the words 'back' and 'hopefully' in the same sentence if she didn't think there was a chance. She knows alot of people are clinging right now.
Finally, I doubt Ambers' contract has even been signed at this point and is that something that they are required to keep secret? Does anyone else out there know if it is true that if it is only for one or two episodes, that they don't sign contracts? What is the mininum number for a contract?
