Re: Part 40

Postby Puff » Mon Aug 11, 2003 5:54 pm

Hey Mary :) Well that was interesting and a funny mention of Y'all. I like Tanya already, her crack about video's was funny and well she gets points for maybe inspiring a Willow and Tara videotape *drools*.

I can't believe Bev ran into the alley. The scoobies must be looking for her by now, hopefully they are on their way. Although she did seem to be holding her own against Glory. That is until she pissed her off.

Great update, eagerly awaiting the next part to find out if Beverly can be saved.

So, the day started and I knew my name and had my pants on. So far, so good. Yay.

Dear Mary,

First I just wanted to add to the long list of people who bow at your feet and marvel at your prowess with the english language. I am in awe of the pictures you paint with your words. Willow and Tara are in far better care in your hands than in He-who-shall-remain-nameless-for-he-is-an-imbecile-and-therefore-not-worthy-of-our-two-goddesses.

Second, I just wanted to let you (and the other kittens) know that I forgot to go to sleep last night because I was so caught up in your story and in the discussion thread. I kept meaning to read only the story, but the damn discussion was just so damn interesting... and damn, when i glanced at the clock it was 5:30 am.

The last (well... not *last*... just "last" for this post) comment that I wanted to make was how real the character's emotions and thought processes have become to me. I find myself questioning *my* thoughts and *my* actions if I found myself in their shoes. Especially in this last section, I wanted to comment on how easy it is to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good. But how easy is it to sacrifice the ones we love?

Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for your gift and for making me think (school is starting soon, i better get started on the thinking).

Oh computerless-one

A great update and thanks for the hat-tip. I plonked a bad-taste pun in Please part 4 just for you.

Quote:
Willow and Tara gave Tanya a brief history of their nocturnal activities, and Tanya shared her thoughts on Beverly’s unsolicited call to arms.
Ok, my first thought was … “geez, they’re a little too much with the full-disclosure aren’t they? I mean sure Bev and Tanya are sisters too but do they really need to know…” Hey, maybe Mary means fighting demons? Ok, not quite you thinking that Tara was driving blind but not too bright either. In my defense, I was trying to cook dinner (which I slightly burned thanks to your great update) as I read.

Quote:
And though she rolled her eyes as she said it, Willow knew that this was a conversation they had had many times over the past five years of their five-month relationship.
so brilliant I had to read it twice. On the other hand, I’m not thinking that clearly.

Also loved Tara asking Willow to walk to the sound of her voice and give her the decoder ring. Ha ha and also ha ha. But I have the feeling that’s a pretty big question. Can someone just rewrite that reality again and again. Could Willow open the shower door in episode 7.1 and see Tara taking a shower and realize it was all a dream? Or something better and more original.

But geez and duh. Doesn’t Bev know anything? Don’t help innocents alone? Didn’t she ever see A Clockwork Orange? Or get those paranoid chain-e-mail things. Don’t go in the alleys ladykins. But ok and you go girl with the insulting Glory. It worked for Spike. Of course he was a vampire so it didn’t kill him… but that’s another story. Great job and we’re so glad for the update.

When you have time you’re missing big happenings over at my place….

Hello, all. Just a few minutes before the library closes for the night and I slink back to my quaint but unwired abode.

You know, I realy deliberated w/ Beverly heading into that damn alley. If she'd thought about it much at all, she would have realized the danger. But she's more of a doer than a thinker (and a lover, not a fighter, to revisit Paul and Michael) and so in she went.

Patty: Thanks for the patience. I don't know if this qualifies as "Queen Mother," but I learned that there was a computer class here and I had to exit over an hour before when I intended. Bad news: Shorter update than intended. Good news: Next update already half-written.

Chilled Monkey: Hey, I appreciate the comment re: my partner's ill-bounded parents. Nice to hear I'm not whacked in thinking they're well...whacked.

Russ: Thanks again for your support. It was a very gracious and much-appreciated post.

Dark Magic Willow: And the yellow jersey goes to...OK, so I'm probably impaired in some way, but I need a nudge to remind me of your thoughts on that elusive trump. Private e-mail, if you would? Yeah, I thought you'd enjoy Willow's ruminations on just who falls where in the "I dictate reality according to my perception of necessity" hierarchy. Thanks for the feedback and the recommended reading, DMW.

Puff, the Magic Kitten...Yep, the next update involves the search for Bev. Can Bev be saved? Tune in!

That's all for now, esp. since the little box at the top of this screen tells me the computer's shutting down in 4 minutes.

Tanya is quite a character, isn't she? I see why Aunt Beverly loves her so much.

Ugh! I knew that was coming due to the foreshadowing in a previous chapter. Aunt Beverly has to be okay, right?

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Wow that was a great update, :clap :bow :clap

Tannya is wonderful. I really think that she and Bev should give up their current jobs and start up a comedy double act, it'd be a hit. :lol

I liked the bit with Willow getting all deja vuey when she heard Tanya say y'all :lol

I just hope that Bev get's away okay. :eek

Re: Part 40

Postby Grimlock72 » Tue Aug 12, 2003 5:14 am

If Protectors can self-terminate why didn't ANY of them do so when interrogated by Glory, hmmm ? I can't see that bluff holding long, either Glory won't believe it after a while or she simply won't care. What good is a captive if you can't properly interrogate her.... Glory could of course switch to threatening Tara, though I imagine Bev would try to use the same bluff then. Should be interesting to see what happens if Tara gets hurt due to her relation with Bev, lots of blame and guilt to go around. (or try to think who would give up who to safe who... interesting game)

Tanya surely has no trouble speaking her mind, good for her. For some reason I think thats needed when living together with Bev :D . No matter what Tanya says though she making Bev's work a lot more difficult. A extra person to be protected and who might very easily be used to pressure Bev. Would have been much better if Tanya was far far away. Remind me to lecture Beverly about going into dark alleys alone, thats too stupid to even think about given that she KNOWS there is lots of trouble around.

The first part of this update was nice and cheerfull all-around, with the bantering back and forth. I liked that, minion-speak is fun too... you can practically HEAR them drool in order to survive :) .

I don't get the 'PS-367' reference, nor does Google (unless you meant some piece of lingerie which I kinda doubt). I could comment on the several mentions of 'no gun to my head' lines but that would be kinda obvious coming from me, so I'll pass :D

I sooooo very much agree with what Willow said (amazing huh?), esp. this part:
Quote:
"The whole thing just offends my sense of order and stability."
.

Happy hunting for a PC (and internet connection), feel free to mail if you have question or troubles in that area.

Hello, all. Will Bev survive? And if she does, will Tanya smack her around for having gone into that alley by herself?

WiccanSpud: First of all, I have to tell you that that's a great signature. Kudos to the creativity. Also loved your reference to He Who Cannot Be Named.

Wow, your feedback was just incredibly warm and gracious. Thanks so much for taking the time to get involved with this story. I totally agree w/ your point about the depth and complexity of the discussions as well. People are making great points re: morality, forgiveness, family, and a host of other constructs. Welcome aboard, and I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on these folks and what they're doing.

I especially appreciate your point about the characters and their realness to you. For me, if I can't feel the characters when I'm reading, I just don't get as involved. It's just very gratifying to hear that I'm hitting the mark more often than not in rendering these people.

Thanks again, Spud, for your kind and supportive words. I hope you enjoy where it goes from here!

Debra: Oh, yeah--the girls were talking staking, not making (it). Had to smile at the idea of you wondering about that, though: "My God, Mary--have these people no boundaries?" Nice reference to the "Dallas" debacle. I can still see that stupid look on "Bobby's" face as he steps out of the shower.

Yeah, Bev going into the alley definitely reflects her inclination to act and then think, esp. when she thinks someone's in danger.

Thanks for the kind words, Debra, and I hope the dinner turned out well! After this posting, I'm heading over to your place to see what those crazy kids are up to.

Rose: Will Bev be OK? Well, I've been calling her all day and she hasn't gotten back to me so here's hoping...Nice pick-up on the foreshadowing, Rose. You just knew Bev wasn't skating outta town w/o some kind of problem. Thanks for the good thoughts!

Justin: I'm glad you liked the update. Bev and Tanya as a comedy duo...Hey, maybe that could buy my new computer! Thanks for the kind words, Justin.

Grimmy Hey--thanks again for all the computer help you've given me. I've actually ordered a computer, and I should have it w/in two weeks. Hopefully, then, by early September I'll be working out of my home, which is a far easier locale in which to write this. Oh--"PS" is short-hand for "Public School." I don't actually know if they use that designation in Dallas, but I liked the cadence of it w/in that sentence.

Who knows how long Bev's bluff (b/c that's what it is--there is no self-termination option) will last. At this point, she's just hoping that either (a) Glory kills her quickly; or (b) she manages to escape. You know, as I imagined Tanya's character, I became intrigued w/ the idea of "for better or worse," in all its implications. Should Bev have simply broken up w/ Tanya? It would have definitely spared Tanya danger; on the other hand, it's (to me) more than a little patronizing, b/c it denies Tanya the opportunity to make her own decision. Should Tanya not have come to SD? Bev is certainly aware of her presence, and may be at greater risk in her desire to protect Tanya. At the same time, I (in Tanya's place) couldn't stand being away from Bev in such a time.

Glad you liked the minion-speak. It was fun to write. Glory herself is a fun character; she's actually one of my two favorite Big Bads, along w/ the Mayor.

Thanks again for following this story, Grimmy, and for your very helpful computer advice. I used it more than once in considering my options.

That's all for now.

Mary

Mmm, Ashcroft and Hussein. *scary visual place*

So, Tanya (a classic blonde cheerleader name) is a Sistah? I liked the character immediately. Tanya is perfect for Beverly, and I would read a fic just about them! And I don't know what was better - Tanya challenging Bev with naughty video disclosure or Willow picking up on the idea. Anyhoo, the plot thickens and Bev is taken by botlle-blonde's minions to her apartment. Some great comedy with the tension, here. The Maclay's play a mean game of Poker, for some pretty high stakes. How will Tanya rescue her sweetie? Tune in tomorrow!

Wonderful, Mary! Maybe you should be deprived of computer service more often!

Tempered Cynic: Yep, Tanya is adding a bit of color to the various shades of White that so dominate the Dale of the Sun. I didn't want to make it this big "Please Notice the African-American Character" moment; I just wanted some diversity. It's one of the areas that I think was most poorly handled on the show. I'm glad you like how those two click. I see them as complementing each other pretty nicely--different in certain ways, but not so much so that they can't understand and appreciate the other.

By the way, if the Ashcroft/Hussein visual scares you, I won't send you the videotape.

Thanks for the kind words, TC~~it's good to be back in the wired saddle again, even if it's via my local library.

Lt. Sticks:Glad you liked Bev's comebacks. I find Glory sort of fun to write, and minion-speak is just enjoyable to think about, play with, and try to approximate. Thanks for the feedback; hope you like where it goes from here.

Thanks again, folks.

Hi Mary

I agree with you re the lack of diversity on the show. As Willow said, Blacks tend to die early in SD, or, like one of my favorite baddies, Mr. Trick, be dead on arrival.

Nice combination of humour & suspense in this part. Hopefully a rescue mission will soon be on the way.

Sorry to be so tardy & brief; it's the first chance I've had to sit down & read/comment. Now I'm heading off to pick up the grandson. (Yep, I'm a codger).

Let's hear it for your local library -- access for the masses, and lots of other good stuff too.

Sorry I'm late.

Firstly, I like Tanya, she's cool. I agree that the series messed up badly in not including more diversity in the characters nationalities.

The "y'all" moment was hilarious :laugh I loved it.

Keep up the good work.

Russ: Yeah--obviously, I was unimpressed with the "All White, All the Time" tint of the show. Glad you enjoyed Tanya's particular style. A grandson? How cool--you say "codger," I say "The one person at the dinner party with truly interesting stories." Thanks for the good thoughts, Russ.

Karen I appreciate the computer nod. It's definitely been difficult, first finding access and then trying to write while surrounded by other people. You know, I have to say that I really enjoy writing Glory b/c she just has so much sass, you know? And you were in good company, shouting at the monitor, "Don't walk into that alley!" That Bev--what are we gonna do with her? Thanks for following this story, Karen, and for the good words.

Chilled Monkey: Well, if you're late, that's simply unacceptable. Please consider yourself chastised. (Obviously, that's a silly li'l joke.) Glad you enjoyed the color-enhancement, CM.

That's all for now, folks. Thanks again.

Hey Mary, say, you’re either psychic, or you got your new computer Thursday afternoon! I guess I can say, with all honesty, I don’t have the energy to do much today [sorry, couldn’t resist such a golden opportunity – rofl] Though in all seriousness, I really do appreciate how far you’re going out of your way to bring us this wonderful gem. Just wanted to say thanks, again.

I loved the last two updates. If Chronos ever gives me a break, I’ll give some more detailed feedback over the weekend. I love Tanya’s character – you’ve done a wonderful job introducing her (in person, as opposed to name) to the story. More when I can.

Cheers!!

Ok, so I am Lurken, Queen of the Lurkers, and basically, I come out of my sweet silence to just, well, hmm...this fic is just grand, like pianos and slams...hate as much as i do to quote movies i love to hate, you totally had me at hello with your writing and your spot-on characterizations and your ability madam, your pure ability to just, well, do this thing you do. Like, I think, could I conceive of this thing and my brain shoots back, um, no. So I must de-lurk and sing my songs of praise, for your fingers for singing across the keys and for your mind for thinking this stuff up in the first place and for time, because you use it so wisely to write these things so wonderfully, and for Bev and Tanya, which, you simply cannot imagine how lovely it made me feel to sense a sista in Sunnydale...and its always cool to have more than just one gay couple on the premises (that you are aware of anyway)oh well, and of course, Dawn and the other Scoobs and I mention Dawn because you help me to actually like the girl. That show just helped me to despise her beyond my actual belief, but fics and yours in particular replaced whatever that shiny whiny thing she did or was on the show and tempered it into something sweet and smart and loveable...that alone is like a major kudo to you, and of course, your words, for our girls...our sweet sweet witches...its just wonderful and I sit in awe of your talent...this story is um, pretty frickin spectacular...and a crapload better than a bunch of writing I with a one-time curiosity, perused at my local Vons. :clap :bow :banana ...looking forward, am I, to the next installment.

Hello Kittens-

Wow Mary! Your Scoobies are wonderful and your Glory and minions are better than ME's as well. I just have to wonder about Bev's counter-interrogation techniques though.

Now about that rescue...never mind, I'm sure it will be nailbiting and wonderful at the same time. Perhaps driving Glory insane first with the image of Hussein and Ashcroft in matching teddies?

Off to wash my brain after that one...

A few more replies, and then update

Postby AntigoneUnbound » Fri Aug 15, 2003 2:26 pm

Hello, Kitties. Just some final replies to your exquisite feedback, and the Part 41 will be available for your viewing pleasure. Thanks!

Patches: Hey--great to see you again! Psychic? No, just begging and borrowing any computer I can find. I appreciate any feedback you get the time to leave, so don't sweat it, OK? Glad you like Tanya--you'll be seeing a lot of her in this next part. Hang in there in the midst o' the craziness, Patches!

Tillowara: Oh my God, I'm so glad you left feedback! I tried to e-mail you about the wonderful feedback you left "OST," but it wouldn't go through. I think it said the address didn't exist, or something like that. Anyway, that was some of the nicest feedback I've ever received--so incredibly gracious and intelligent and supportive. I so appreciate the time you took to write down your thoughts--not to mention read the story in the first place! Honestly--words like yours make the difficult stretches bearable. When the characters all seem to call in sick or every idea that crosses your mind just seems ludicrous, reading feedback like yours reminds me that there is a story here and I'm not a totally whacked choice for storyteller.

And God, yes--SD needed a sistah beyond the telling of it; nor shall the SD of my creation have only one same-sex couple therein. (I'm actually working on Giles and Nathan, but they both seem a little reluctant.) You know, Dawn's a complicated character for me, too. There were some moments on the show (and here I'm thinking of "Get out get out GET OUT!!") when I simply wanted Buffy et. al. to walk her down to Glory's place and say, "Knock yerself out, Hell God." But for this story, I knew I needed to find some core of compassion for her, as well as write her a little more appealingly.

Thanks for coming out of lurker mode, TW--I really do appreciate it. If you ever feel like dropping back in, I'd love it; if you prefer to wander the board unseen, it'll be great knowing you're out there! Take care.

Jixer: Yeah, Bev definitely leads with her wry, doesn't she? I think it's how she sees life; how she keeps from going just bat-shit over it all, and now she holds fast to it even more. Ashcroft and Hussein...c'mon, Jixer? Can't you just see the sparks whenever one speaks of the other? They doth protest too much...Thanks as ever, Jixer, for your feedback. I hope you like the ensuing rescue.

Part 41

Postby AntigoneUnbound » Fri Aug 15, 2003 2:53 pm

GODS SERVED AND ABANDONED

Disclaimer:
I’m making so much money off of this endeavor that I just bought Rhode Island. Or maybe not, since I don’t own these folks, except for Beverly and Tanya, who are exceedingly not happy with me right now.

*****

Part 41

*****

“So at the risk of getting personal, do you two have an ‘Understandable Indiscretion’ clause?” Tanya asked, wiping pizza sauce from her chin.

“Um…having a hard time matching the noun with the adjective,” Willow replied hesitantly.

“Oh, we’re not talking random flings,” Tanya hastily assured her. “I mean, specific—albeit completely unattainable—women. If by some miracle you ended up with the chance to sleep with them, you’d be forgiven for doing so.”

As Willow and Tara looked at each other with uncertainty, Tanya continued, “For me, it’s Halle Barry. If she shows up and says, ‘Hey Tanya—wanna make with the hot sex?’ I get to go for it. Oh, and Charlize Theron. Bev…let’s see, I think she went with Sandra Bullock and maybe Ashley Judd.”

“Sounds like a fun game,” Tara acknowledged, until she felt Willow’s eyes fall upon her with the force of a bludgeon. “At least, fun for other people who aren’t me. It’s not so much my thing.”

Tanya laughed; it was a deep, rich sound that Tara liked immensely. She drew some comfort from the fact that her aunt’s partner hadn’t lost her sense of humor. She watched Tanya glance first at her watch, and then out the wide restaurant window.

“How long does it take a person to put money in a meter? We only parked a block away.” She looked at Tara, who saw nascent fear emerge in the dark eyes across from her, felt it slide across the table into her own heart. There was a brief silence, and then all three women had pushed back their chairs and were heading for the door, oblivious to the manager’s angry shouts.

Moments later, it was clear that Beverly wasn’t on her way back to the restaurant; wasn’t at the car; wasn’t anywhere that they could find her. Tara felt dread slinking along her veins until it threatened to drown her from within. As Tanya spun to look at her, she saw terror and rage and something else—a fierce and furious determination. She held Tara’s gaze for several seconds, her breathing shallow. When she spoke, her voice was barely a whisper.

“How do we find this bitch?” she muttered.

*****

“So Bev—how do you like my not-even-remotely-humble abode?” Glory, who just moments ago sounded as if she were about to have her minions decapitate the woman in front of her, had abruptly turned agreeable, even engaging.

Girlfriend needs a mood stabilizer, Beverly thought dimly. Where does a god go for psychiatric services?

Aloud, she replied, “It’s nice, Glo. Plush, yet just this side of garish.”

Glory laughed, delighted. “I’m so glad you like it! Especially since this suite will be your last stop on the subway o’ Life.”

“No time for that pony ride?” Beverly asked.

“’Fraid not,” Glory answered, and her voice sounded almost regretful. “But we can move the torture from room to room, so you can sample all the amenities.”

“How about the bathroom?” Beverly suggested.

“How about the name of the Key?” Glory countered.

*****

“Tanya, wait—we don’t know where Glory is,” Tara said reluctantly.

“Then let’s find her.” Tanya’s voice was calm and collected and absolutely chilling.

Tara looked at Willow in anguish. Was this really happening? Had her aunt really been snatched away from them in broad daylight?

She knew the answer to both of those questions, even before she registered Willow’s gaze, a look filled with both fear and compassion.

“We’ll find her, Baby,” Willow assured her, in that voice that told her that no matter how Big the Bad, Willow would never let her face it alone.

Tara held onto her hands and drew a deep breath, then turned back to Tanya. “I think we should find the others,” she said simply.

*****

“You know, Glo, we could have some difficulty with the torture bit.” That’s it, Maclay…Keep it light. This chica doesn’t want to fuck you up beyond recognition; at least not yet, not before she gets her info.

Wonder how she’ll take the news that she’s not getting her info?

“And what might the problem be?” Glory asked, in the same solicitous tone.

“Well, I don’t exactly advertise this fact—I mean, in the world of education, a certain discretion is called for—but I’m really into the ‘S’ part of ‘S&M.’ I mean it—the more it hurts, the giddier I get. Could make for a long and ultimately frustrating experience for you.”

“Is that right?” Glory asked, her crossed arms barely visible in the dark recess.

“Oh yeah,” Beverly enthused. “If you really wanna inflict some damage, I’d suggest a glass of Merlot and a warm bath with sandalwood foaming gel.”

“Really?”

“Definitely. It’s hurting me to even say the words.”

Tentatively, like a squirrel considering a run across an interstate highway, a voice piped up from Beverly’s right.

“Please forgive my most presumptuous and mind-numbingly stupid interruption, Thou Eternally Scrumptious One, but I believe the Protector lies.”

“You think so, Einstein?” Beverly flinched as a vase shattered next to the toady who had just spoken. “Boy, nothing gets by you, does it?” Glory took a quick step toward her, and then halted, teetering slightly. “What the hell is it about you?” she muttered weakly, stepping back as far from Beverly as she could.

“I dunno,” Beverly shrugged. “A lot of women fall all over themselves to get close to me.”

“Damn it,” came the low hiss. “Why is this so hard? All I wanna do is get back home, prop myself up on a few eternally suffering souls in front of a nice roaring fire, and spend some quality time with my peeps; my two buds; the ones who spit me out into this little slice of suburban hell. I’m so close to the Key I can practically feel it; you know who it is and you won’t tell me; and before long, that humanity-infested twin of mine is gonna show up and want the remote.”

OK, didn’t know that…

Wonder what else Her Royal Insanity would like to share with the group?

“Glo, you oughtta give this realm a chance. What’s so bad about it?”

She heard Glory slam a fist into the étagère beside her, sending expensive curios flying against the wall.

“What’s so bad? What isn’t? The noise; the mortality; the smells; the humans.” Beverly could feel two baleful eyes glaring at her. “And look at you—you’re not human, and you’re going to die for them?”

For Tanya? About a thousand times, if needed.

“But what about your sister? If she’s human, doesn’t she at least bring a wee smile to that sad face of yours?”

“Sister? What the…?” Then a harsh, grating laugh barked out of the shadows. “Oh, you’re talking about my mortal coil!” Glory’s voice was heavy with disdain. “Lemme tell you something, Bev…Opposites do not attract, ever. My brother, for want of a better word, is as dedicated to saving humans as I am to eating them for breakfast.”

Brother?

*****

Within 45 minutes, Tara, Willow, and Tanya had been joined at Dominic’s Pizza Den by Giles, Buffy, and Dawn. Willow had conveyed the urgency of the situation as explicitly as possible without naming Glory or the Key by name. Introductions had been hasty and strained, particularly where Dawn and Tanya were involved.

“You say that Beverly left to put more time on the meter, and after a few minutes you became worried?” Giles’ expression conveyed his own concern.

“Right,” Willow nodded.

“But if it was only a few minutes, they couldn’t have gone too far, right?” Buffy asked, looking at Giles.

“I don’t know that that really applies here, Buffy,” the Watcher countered regretfully. “We don’t know that Glory is constrained by typical parameters such as speed.”

“Except that I bet Glory wasn’t there; not in the alley, anyway,” Tara put in suddenly.

“Why is that?” Giles looked puzzled.

“Because Glory can’t be around Bev without getting a little woozy, remember?” Tara replied.

“That’s right,” Willow joined in quickly. “She’d have to send her scabby little sycophants to—to do it.” She stopped abruptly, watching Tanya’s face at this last part.

“And we have no evidence that Glory’s minions have any particular powers,” Giles said thoughtfully. “So perhaps she was taken somewhere close.”

“I can’t really see any of those crusty little half-pints pulling away in a ’95 Civic,” Buffy mused. “And you say the rental car wasn’t touched?”

“Nothing,” Tara concurred, looking at Tanya. The other woman’s silence was beginning to worry her.

“Tanya, is Beverly strong? Could she have put up a struggle; made it difficult for them to…well, to take her?” Tara could see that Giles hated asking the question.

But Tanya’s jaw only tightened for a moment before she replied, “She’s tough, I know that. But I guess it depends on whether they took her by surprise, and whether they—whether they used any weapons.” As she said this last part, Tara could see her swallow hard, trying to keep her voice steady.

Dawn, she realized, hadn’t spoken at all. She suspected that Buffy and Giles had tried to discourage the teenager from accompanying them, to no avail. She knew that Dawn had taken an instant liking to her aunt; more to the point, she was fairly certain that Dawn was already carrying a heavy burden of guilt. Beverly’s kidnapping would surely worsen that.

“So do we fan out?” Willow was asking. “Start from here and work outwards, looking for possible living quarters? There’s a cyber-café on the next block; I could pull up the street plans and rule out some places, save us some time.” Tara could practically see her girlfriend shifting into problem-solving mode. Tanya, by contrast, appeared to be shifting into vengeance mode, judging from the fury that practically radiated from her.

“That might well be our best option, Willow,” Giles assented.

“Tanya, I know you must be crazy right now, but remember, Glory’s not gonna want to hurt her. Bev has something she needs.”

Tara halted abruptly as she was reaching out to Tanya. Hurt…Bev, hurting…Her head hurting so bad, so suddenly…

“Ben,” she practically shouted.

*****

“OK, so I may be way outta line with the personal questions here, but you have a brother?”

“You’re not going to try some family therapy thing are you? Tell me that communication is the key to any good relationship?” Glory’s voice was bored, and Beverly knew that that was a bad sign.

“So Glo and the bro aren’t close?”

Glory’s laugh sounded anything but humorous. “Beverly, Beverly…Methinks you’re stalling.” Turning to one of her toadies, she said conversationally, “I think we should start the persuasion techniques now, Jinx.”

“Gladly, Most Curiously Strong One,” came the eager reply. “What would you have us do?”

“Hmm…I think to start, we’ll go with something distinctive but not too extreme,” Glory mused.

“Oh God, not the Merlot!” Beverly screamed.

Glory chuckled. “You got some brass ovaries, girl.” She paused, and then added, “I’ll have to soak them a few hours before I eat them.”

*****

“Ben? What’s he got to do with this?” Giles asked, perplexed.

Tara hastily recounted the chance meeting two nights ago, and Beverly’s inexplicable reaction.

“So you think Ben’s involved with Glory somehow?” Buffy’s voice was skeptical.

“I don’t know,” Tara shrugged. “But there’s no denying the fact that her headache was severe and the fact that it was perfectly synchronized to his coming and going.”

“He gave me his number, too—remember?” Willow said excitedly.

Tanya looked hard at Willow; Tara could see the effort it was taking for her aunt’s partner to keep it together. “Get him on the phone,” she said simply.

As Willow began to rummage through her bag for Ben’s information, Giles glanced at the front section of a Sunnydale Prism that had been left on the table to their right.

“Hullo, what’s this?” he murmured, retrieving the paper. “‘Gathering of Robed Horsemen Draws Citation,’” he read. Scanning the article, he explained, “It appears that a patrol car happened upon a large group of men dressed in black robes, loitering in the woods outside of town. Apparently, they travel by horse,” he concluded.

“Think they have anything to do with this?” Buffy asked.

“I don’t know. According to the story, they were all served with citations for creating a disturbance and failure to pick up their animals’ droppings. They’re being held for further questioning.”

“Wow…Stealth, not so much an option when horses get involved,” Buffy murmured.

Tara had been watching Dawn during this exchange. She sensed that the girl was close to tears. Finally, she reached across the table and took Dawn’s hand in her own.

“Dawn, Sweetie, it’ll be OK. We’ll find her,” she said softly.

“Yeah, Dawnie—you know our motto: A day without mortal peril is like a day we never experience.”

But Dawn wasn’t looking at either of them. Instead, she was staring at Tanya.

“I’m sorry,” she finally whispered, her voice tight with misery.

Tanya didn’t insult Dawn by asking “What for?” She only sighed, and shook her head.

“I know that if it weren’t for me, Beverly wouldn’t be in danger,” the teenager continued, ignoring Buffy’s warning glance.

Tanya looked at her for a long moment, then dropped her head into her hands. Tara wondered if she were crying, but when the older woman looked up again, her eyes were dry as she gazed intently at the Key.

“Dawn, I’ll be honest with you—when I first heard about all of this, I hated you.” Dawn flinched at the words. “I didn’t even know you,” Tanya continued, “but I hated what you meant to our lives; I hated the thought that Beverly could die because of you.”

“Hey—enough with the ‘H’ word, OK?” Buffy interjected, her voice laced with hostility.

“Let her talk,” Dawn muttered. “I’d rather hear the truth than a bunch of reassurances I don’t believe.”

“Tough girl,” Tanya murmured. “Good for you.” She rubbed her hands across her eyes as if trying to erase an image from her mind. Then she looked back at Dawn. “Thing is, Girlfriend, I suddenly realized that if it weren’t for you, Beverly wouldn’t even be here; at least, I don’t think she would. So it’s kind of a Catch-22, you know? Beverly could die to protect the reason she was created.” She turned, staring out the window for a moment, then turned back to Dawn. A rueful half-smile crossed her lips. “And then I get here and I meet you and you’re all of what—fifteen?—and you’re worried sick about my baby, and Tara and Willow obviously think you’re the bee’s knees, and I don’t hate you…I just want Beverly back. So I’m sorry if my social skills aren’t on their A-Game, Dawn, but don’t blame yourself, OK? Because I don’t.”

Dawn swallowed heavily, and then nodded. She chewed her lower lip for a moment, and then said so softly that Tara had to strain to hear her, “I’ll do anything it takes to get her back, Tanya. I promise you.”

Suddenly, Willow gave a muted shout of triumph. “Got it! ‘Ben Dover—234-0126,’” she read.

“His name is Ben Dover? That’s gotta have some issues attached to it,” Buffy muttered.

“Let’s see what he knows,” Tanya said decisively.

“What do we say?” Willow asked, her fingers poised over the keypad of her cell phone. “‘Hi, Ben. Say, are you involved with a Hell God? Just wondering.’ Not much nuance.”

“Buffy, you talk,” Tara instructed. “Tell him you need to see him.”

“Why me?” Buffy asked, but her question was too purposefully innocent for Tara to grant it any credence.

“Because he’ll be more responsive to you, and you know it,” she replied. “Ask him if you can come over to his place.”

“What if he’s at the hospital?” Giles interjected.

“Then try to talk to him in person; tell him you’ll come over later, when he’s done, and see if he’ll give you the address. That may even work better—we can check the place out while he’s gone.”

“Damn, Tara—there’s more spy girl to you than I knew,” Buffy replied admiringly. Tara watched with faint amusement as Buffy unconsciously settled her face into Subtle Flirtation Mode. “OK, here goes.”

*****

My left hip…That doesn’t hurt. Just concentrate on your trusty left glute, Maclay, and you won’t be so upset about that blood pouring out of your face…

Such positive self-talk was interrupted by the harsh ring of a phone. She tried to lift her head, but her view of the Hell God was obscured even more by the blood that ran down over and into her eyes. Her hearing, though, was still good.

“Damn it, Benjamin, not now!” The voice was as harsh as it had been for the past hour, but now it was also tinged with frustration. Beverly could hear a struggle emanating from the shadows at the back of the room.

Who the hell’s she fighting? I never passed out; I know nobody came in.

After several seconds, the scuffle seemed to subdue, and then she heard nothing. Even the minions had been silenced, it seemed. Finally, a slender figure emerged from the shadows.

Who’s the guy in drag?

*****

“Hi—is this Ben?” Buffy’s voice bordered on breathless.

Tara caught Willow’s eyes across the table. They had compared notes before with regard to Buffy’s somewhat split personality where men were concerned. Demon-slaying warrior by night; occasionally dippy Valley Girl by day.

“Oh, good—I’m so glad I caught you. Are you at work right now?”

Buffy gave a quick shake of her head to the others. “Well, I hope it’s OK that I called you…What? Oh, Willow gave me your number…Yeah, I kinda asked her for it.”

Now Tanya had joined in with the raised eyebrows. Glancing over at Dawn, she muttered, “If you’re into guys, Dawn, take notes.” She gave the Key a small grin.

“I was wondering if I could stop over…Yeah…Well, I need to talk to you. About what? Oh—uh, about…about my spleen.”

Her spleen? Better than STD’s, I guess…

“Yeah…Oh, I just have a couple of questions…Plus, I’d like to see you. Yeah…Is this a good time? Oh? Why not?” Her glance to the rest of them conveyed her suspicion at his response.

“OK…What about later? Oh—you have a double shift? Well, I guess we won’t be getting together, will we? Tomorrow night? Well, that might work…What if I come over to your place?”

My God, if this guy isn’t involved with any of this, he’s gotta think Buffy’s the easiest thing since falling off a log.

“Dinner at Antonio’s? I dunno…I may need to take action on my spleen before then. I’ll get back to you.” So saying, she hung up abruptly.

“OK, guys, Ben definitely does not want me to see his place. Either he’s got a crazy wife locked in the attic, or something else is going on. Will, can you hack into the hospital files and find his home address?”

“Consider it done,” Willow replied, speaking literally—she had started the task when Buffy was still on the phone. “Dover, Benjamin K. Lives at 228 Delgado.” She looked up hopefully. “That’s only a couple of blocks from here.”

“Let’s go,” Tanya said, in a voice that left little room for debate.

*****

Don’t pass out, Maclay. Whatever just happened, Glory’s not happy about it, and this may be your only chance to get out of here.

She could barely make out the shape of the person approaching her.

Where's Glory? And why is this guy wearing her dress?

She tried to focus on him; tried to form words. The closer he came, however, the more she hurt. Blood was streaming down over her face, blurring her vision; she was already in worse pain than she had ever imagined; and now it felt as if her very brain were about to explode. She dimly recognized it as a different kind of pain…She had felt that before—when? Recently, wasn’t it? Nausea rose up in her at the force of it; she fought to hold onto consciousness.

Two nights ago—that was it. When she met that guy…Ben, wasn’t it?

She heard him take another step toward her and knew that she would pass out with the pain. Through the roaring in her ears, she dimly heard a voice from her left beseeching, “You must leave, Most Rippled Muscular One. You must allow Glory to return.”

“No…No, I have to help her. Help me untie her, you scabby little wretch.” Beverly recognized the voice, though now it held none of its previous friendliness. She heard an agonized sob wrench from someone nearby; with an almost-detached surprise, she realized that it had come from her.

“Please, Your Illustrious Symbiotic Handsomeness…The great Glorificus will be most displeased if—” The pathetic voice fell silent abruptly, only to resume with greater urgency. “Someone approaches, Sir. If you will not allow Glory to return, you must leave at once.”

“No—no, I should stay and just get this over with, right now…one way or another. Maybe it’s not too late.” Through her agony, Beverly could hear the desperation in his voice.

“Do you really think that, Most Ambivalent One? That you can explain all of this to anyone—even the lovely mortal who just called—and they would understand? Of course not. Go, Sir, if you still refuse Glory her home. We will take care of this one.”

Oh, well shit.

But the sabers piercing her brain had stilled, just a little bit, as Ben stepped uncertainly away from her.

“I’m—God, I’m so sorry,” he finally whispered, anguish thick in his retreating voice.

Seconds later, she heard the door burst open. By now, her eyes were completely useless, coated with her own blood. But she knew it was Tanya; knew it even before she heard the choked sound of her own name called out in the voice that had first serenaded her years ago.

“Bev—oh God, Baby.”

She tried to warn her; tried to tell her that there were still enemies in the room—albeit extremely short and poorly dressed ones. But she couldn’t speak. Her tongue was too thick within her mouth and she wasn’t totally sure how she was even breathing at the moment.

“Buffy!” She recognized Willow’s voice. “Scabby minion, two o’clock!”

Bev could hear the sounds of a quick and decisive struggle. From her left, she thought she heard several creatures scurrying off, hoping to avoid their cohort’s fate.

At that point, she stopped worrying much about what else was going on because Tanya had reached her and was pulling frenetically on the ropes that held her.

“Baby—just hold on, OK? We’ll get you out of here. You’re safe now, Sweetie.” The words tumbled out in an anguished sob.

“Here—hold this li’l fella, Giles. I think he’s gonna be a big help to us in the near future.” Beverly could hear Buffy shove the vanquished and now-groveling Assistant to the Hell God aside and dart over to her. Within seconds, the ropes were untied. Beverly felt herself floating off, almost as if she now knew that she could afford to; that she was finally safe. She watched herself fall into Tanya’s arms; watched the strong arms encircle her and pull her into a gentle but fiercely protective embrace.

The last thing she remembered was the sound of her own voice saying, “I’m in big trouble for this one, aren’t I?” and Tanya’s soft, sweet laughter, threaded with her tears, spilling down over her soul as she finally let go.

Yay this story just keeps getting better. :banana :bounce

It seems like it was a case of saved by the bell for Bev. I'm glad that Bev's safe. Maybe now she'll learn to just walk away when she hears someone being attacked, you know no good deed goes unpunished. :wink

The torture was rather nasty. I have to admit that I'm rather squeamish about people having things done to their eyes, so the worst part about it was the blood running into Bev's eyes, rather than the actual injury :paranoid

So does this mean that they're going to be able to put 2 and 2 together about Ben and come up with an even number between three and five?

Hi Mary. Glad to hear this is paying off so well for you. Does Rhode Island come with a warranty? If Ontario did, I'd be asking for a refund about now.

In between rotating blackouts, I was delighted to find this new chapter posted. As Justin said, it just keeps getting better.

The progression from light-hearted banter to worry to frenzied action, all interspersed with cuts back to the Glory-Bev interaction -- masterfully written. Glory is one of the two best villains on BtVS, and you write her and her minions better than they appeared on the show. The Glory & Bev banter is hilarious, and yet at the same time deadly serious, as we know Bev is fighting for her life. By the end of all this, Bev knows about Glory/Ben -- the question is, will she remember it to tell Buffy & Co.? I'm glad you were able to depict the torture without going into gory detail -- it's much more effective that way when done well.

So, the Knights get picked up by the constabulary. Makes a lot more sense than being able to ride all over the countryside, chasing RV's and otherwise creating havoc. Like Buffy says, "Stealth, not so much an option when horses get involved" Besides, horse droppings are a serious offence in a town infested by the walking dead.

The Tanya/Dawn conversation was satisfying; Dawn's guilt, Buffy's protectiveness, Tanya's honesty combined with compassion. All the type of character interaction that is typical of this story.

Anyway, they got her out alive, caught a minion to question, and maybe learned something of value. Could have been a lot worse. And I'd be very surprised if Bev stops going to the aid of others because of this; she is the Protector, after all. Maybe a little backup would be good, though.

I'd better get this posted before the power goes off again. Have a good weekend.

Hey Mary, I must be living right because four stories I'm reading and really love got updated today. Woo and also hoo! A great update and I'm just so glad that Bev got rescued in one day. Ben has no freaking cahones. He should have at least gotten her down and said that he just happened by her. I mean they know it was his apartment so it's not like he can please nolo contendre (sp? definition? who knows). That dweeb. Great job! Debra

Love the way Beverly is trying to stall for time. The arguing between her and Glory is hilarious. I am just glad Beverly is okay for now. She must be in a lot of pain though.

I wonder how far they will get before Glory comes back. :hmm

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Mary,

My Gods woman!! I love this story. The characters are fantastic, the "protector" is a great idea and the dialogue kills me! I love Beverly and her matter of fact way of looking at things. Her sarcasm is right up my ally. You are a fantastic writer!

I can't wait for more of this!

Hello Kittens-

Now if SD is like most places those horses are at the Humane Society. If they've been ridden hard then the knights may face animal cruelty charges too and denied the animals' return. Hard to chase somebody in chainmail on foot.

I wonder how you're going to handle someone who wants to save lives knowing that he shares an existence with a killer.

Finally-the 'bees knees'? Oh well got to go.

Big-time action in this episode and lots of anxious moments. But these are tough times while the sleeze-queen is in town. Tanya is great under hard times - tough and vulnerable, and loving her girl. As for Beverly, this chica DOES have brass ovaries. Someone to be proud of, no doubt.

This Tanya game (‘Understandable Indiscretion’ ) is lotsa fun, but poor Tara! Willow is the jealous girl? Interesting, I like you bringing out her possessive side. I'd like to see Aly play that scene! Finally, poor Dawn, the strong and scared girl she should have been.

Wonderful as always, Mary. And could you sell me a slice of Rhode Island?

The banter between Glory and Bev is great; you've captured the voice of Glory and her minions. It looks like you're heading for a quick resolution of season 5 with Tara and Bev's realizations that Ben is or at least is associated with Glory (or is it that Glory is Ben?), but there's still the mystery of why Ben's presence affects Bev in a similar way to how Bev's presence repels Glory. Like russ, I really liked the interaction between Tanya and Dawn.

You've also managed to get us back on track with the capture of a minion as in Tough Love. However, it looks like the knights ran into a problem. That was hilarious and so right. Stealth isn't an option there.

Hi Mary :) Well I am still giggling hysterically over the Glory and Beverly dialogue. I loved this line...

Quote:
“So Glo and the bro aren’t close?”

Just the fact that Beverly has the guts to call Glory Glo is brilliant. I am so glad that scoobies made it in the nick of time (whatever that epression really means) and that Beverly is safe for now. Hopefully she will be able to inform everyone over the whole Ben/Glory thing. I see tanya is fitting in well with the scooby gang and I am glad that she talked to Dawn and was honest with her.

Thanks for this update. I love this story!

So, the day started and I knew my name and had my pants on. So far, so good. Yay.

You know what I love about this? Well, there's many things, but in this particular instance, it's no Spike and barely any Xander. I couldn't stand the redemption of the mass murderer and the over-inflation of the useless faux soldier. And through your story, you've managed to believably obliterate their "heroism" in favor of the women's. I have to say I LOVE that about this story.

That being said, this part was really well pieced together. Beverly's bravery while maintaining her wicked sense of humor was just so refreshing. She's strong that one--her bark and her bite are of equal measure, I'd say. So it was great to see her go toe to toe with Ms. Super Perm. I am glad that you didn't go into exactly how Beverly received those injuries 'cause frankly, my stomach's a little weak for the violence. I appreciate that you kept the tone light, despite the gravity of the situation. I think that really served to highlight how flaky and utterly ridiculous Glorificus truly is. Sure, she can "make with the beat down" but if you ask me, that hell god is a walking basket case. In any case, many props to Bev for keeping it together despite Glory's tendency to hit first and ask questions later. So very strong. In my opinion, Bev and Tara are like two peas in a pod--both completely loyal and devoted and both willing to suffer innumerable atrocities to protect the ones they love. Gotta love those Maclay women.

On a side note, I wonder if Tara and Willow walked into that room and thought, "wow...deja-vu."

I have to say, I really enjoy your Buffy unvierse. It's like the utopia of Joss Cretin's world, the cream of the crop, the best of the best. And so I thank you for providing us with an alternative to that frightening, pathetic little world.

Until next time...

I really enjoyed this update Mary. For a couple of reasons:

--Ben Dover? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA...ok I had to get that out. :p

--Dawn's words to Buffy about needing to hear the truth rather than reassurances, it was nice to hear someone finally say that.

--Tanya's words to Dawn about hating her but not. And the Catch-22 that arose because of Dawn. I liked Tanya's insight and straight-forwardness with Dawn. Although Buffy had to protect Dawn, she never truly treated her like a young adult. Which always bothered me about the show. B/W/X were always fighting evil and I felt Dawn should have been given a fair shake at it as well. Hell, Buffy was the Slayer, she could have let Dawn go around a few times before Season sucks-ass 7. And, perhaps if Buffy would have let Dawn fight the good fight....she wouldn't have been soooooooooo friggin' whiny.

I shall patiently await the next installment. :wave
