CHAPTER EIGHTWillow and Tara walked into the Magic Box hand in hand, the bell above the door announcing their arrival. They walked over to the table and sat down on the bench side by side. Buffy and Faith silently watched as they came through the door and sat down with them at the table. It was obvious from the way the two girls were seated so closely together, smiles on their faces, heads bent in private conversation, that the date had gone well. But, they wanted details, and they wanted them now. With a slight nudge to Faith’s elbow, Buffy cleared her throat.
Willow and Tara looked up at the sound of someone clearing their throat. They smiled sheepishly when they realized that both Buffy and Faith were staring at them intently. “What?” they said simultaneously.
“What do you mean what?” Buffy said. “You know what’s what! Tell us about your date, and don’t leave out any details.” Seeing a blush creep up both girl’s faces she added, “Ok, maybe you can leave out a few details.”
“Buffy!” Tara chided. “We had dinner, watched a movie, and fell asleep. That’s all.” She giggled when she saw Buffy’s deflated look.
Faith, however, wasn’t buying it. She leaned forward on her elbows to look Willow directly in the eye. “Come on, Red. You didn’t come home last night. That’s not like you. SOMETHING happened. I know it. Now spill.”
As much as Willow wanted to tell Faith about everything that happened, she was having too much fun watching them beg for details. “You’re right, something did happen.” A knowing smirk plastered itself on Faith’s face, and then shattered when Willow said, “Everything Tara just told you happened. That’s it.” It was now Willow’s turn to grin as she watched Faith slump back in her chair and let out a grunt of frustration.
Buffy was about to try another trick when Giles came out from the training room and asked if they were ready to begin. “Saved by the Watcher man this time, but we will get it out of you.” She said, looking pointedly at the two girls on the bench.
Willow and Tara simply laughed as Buffy and Faith made their way to the back room. Willow stood and left a small kiss on Tara’s lips and then headed off to join them.
Several Weeks Later
Buffy, Faith, Giles, Willow, and Tara chatted quietly as they entered the cemetery. It was Willow’s first time on patrol, her first time to see a vampire. She was nervous, but felt safe with her companions. The night air was chilly, and neither Willow nor Tara had remembered to bring a jacket before they had left Tara’s dorm room. They walked behind the others, one arm around each other’s waists while their free hands carried a stake.
“Nervous?” Tara asked as she rubbed the small of Willow’s back.
Willow turned her head and smiled softly at her girlfriend. “A little.” She said.
“As well as you should be.” Said a voice off to their left. The group turned towards the voice and found themselves faced with five vampires, freshly risen from the looks of their clothing. The vamps made no time in talking as the three in the middle moved towards Buffy and Faith. The one on to the far left made his way towards Giles, while the remaining one went for Willow and Tara.
“Willow, you ok?!?” Faith yelled as she pushed one of the vamps away from her.
“Never better!” Willow yelled back.
Both girls, feeling an instinctive need to protect the one she loved, stood rooted to the ground side by side. Tara shifted the stake to her right hand, and the two girls prepared to face the vampire together. He moved towards Willow and threw a punch at her with his left arm. She easily blocked the punch and delivered a fierce upper cut to his chin. The vamp was stunned for a moment, but quickly recovered and lunged at Willow again, this time throwing punch after punch. She blocked his punches while backing up, but was caught off guard when one of his punches collided with her ribs, knocking the air out of her and sending her to her knees.
“Willow!” Tara yelled. She was about to go to her love, when she saw the vampire turn around and growl at her. He lunged towards her before she could react and sent her sprawling to the ground. He landed on top of her and bared his fangs. He was about to go in for the bite when he felt someone grab the back of his shirt and yank him to his feet.
“Get the hell off of my girlfriend!” Willow yelled as she spun the vamp around and hit him square in the nose with her fist. She was beyond mad now. She was irate, and she let that feeling come out through her punches and kicks as she drove the vamp away from Tara. Looking behind the vamp, she saw Faith coming towards her with her stake ready to strike. She kicked him in the stomach one last time, hard, and sent him sprawling backwards towards Faith who plunged the stake into his back, piercing his heart and turning him to dust.
Willow never saw him turn to dust as she had already turned around and made her way back towards Tara. She knelt down next to Tara who was now sitting on the ground and looking at Willow with glazed over eyes. “You ok, baby?” Willow asked.
“Oh yeah.” Tara replied, her voice slightly lower than usual.
Willow shivered at the sound of Tara’s voice. “I mean are you hurt?” she said as she ran her right hand down Tara’s cheek.
“I’m fine, baby. Just a little cold down here.”
“Let me help you up.” She helped Tara to her feet, and embraced her once she stood. Wrapping her arms tightly around her love, she softly kissed her, and was pleasantly surprised when she felt Tara deepen the kiss. They pulled apart at the sound of the others approaching.
“Wow, Will, that was some great fighting.” Buffy complemented.
“Thanks, Buffy. No one messes with my girl.” She smiled at Tara as the group made their way out of the cemetery.
Walking towards Tara’s dorm, Willow stroked the back of Tara’s hand. “He knocked you down.” She softly said.
“I’m fine, baby. Really.” Tara replied and gave Willow’s hand a gentle squeeze.
“I know, but you could have been hurt, and that just won’t do. We’re going back to your room and I’m going to teach you some self-defense. Right now.” She gave Tara a look that said no arguments. Suddenly, Tara wasn’t so cold anymore as she felt her body grow warm at the thought of everything that Willow could show her.
After dropping Willow and Tara off at the dorms, Buffy, Faith, and Giles made their way back home. Having waited until the girls left before commenting on the conversation they had not so innocently overheard Buffy asked Faith, “Think they’ll get any training done tonight?”
Faith laughed and shook her head. “They may get some training done, but I don’t think it’ll be the kind of training either of them are expecting.”
They laughed heartily as Giles took off his glasses and began cleaning them profusely. Putting them back on his face he said, “Yes, well, self-defense training might do everyone some good.” The girls couldn’t help but laugh harder at the implications behind Giles’ statement.
