Title-Witness Protection
Written by-Taralover
Rating-R for now. There will be some violence in this fic but hopefully nothing over the top. I’ve tried to avoid being too graphic.
Disclaimer-I do not own Willow or Tara or anything to do with them, this is just a fanfiction for my own fun and that of my readers.
Summary-After witnessing the murder of Tara’s brother Willow and Tara are forced into witness protection and moved to Sunnydale, but are they swapping one danger for another?
Feedback-Yes please, I really love feedback.
Notes-Maybe I should have rewritten this whole thing but I've written so much I don't think I can bear rewriting it.

Chapter One-Road Rage

Willow Rosenberg took a sly glimpse at her best friend Tara Maclay as her brother Donnie drove them home after a day spent shopping or “having retail therapy” as she called it. Her brother may be an almighty jerk at times but Tara is so hot. It’s a good thing that I’m not a male; she’d be able to notice my arousal. She can’t be gay, a girl that good, with my luck around women, would be as straight as a ruler. Everything about her is so…so gorgeous. It’s not just her looks- her deep blonde hair and her beautiful sapphire eyes, it’s her entire personality. She’s so cute and funny and witty and sexy and I’m falling in love with her and…what the heck?”
A red Ferrari had come out without warning and without indicating into their path and Donnie slammed on the brakes but still thumped into it. Both he and the driver leapt out of their car. “You stupid idiot, you nearly got me killed! And look what you’ve done to my car…”

Donnie snapped back “You’re the idiot here, you came out without indicating. You’re the one who should pay for the damage.” The man, dressed in a smart suit with a gold chain around his neck, responded by kicking Donnie’s car as hard as he could. Donnie made a grab for the man’s chain and ripped it away from his neck, snapping the chain in the process, and then waved it in front of him. “This will pay for my car, asshole.” The man tried to punch him and missed and then both of them were trading punches and kicks and Donnie was starting to win the fight.

Until the man drew a large knife from inside his suit jacket and began stabbing Donnie over and over again. “Stop it, you’ll kill him,” Tara shouted, and turned her head away, unable to watch. Willow did not turn away and saw that he twisted the knife with each stab, enlarging the wounds. He jumped into his car and sped off leaving Donnie lying in a pool of blood.

Tara burst into tears and crouched over Donnie’s body trying to revive him whilst Willow used her mobile phone to call an ambulance and the police. It seemed an age before the police and an ambulance arrived and when the ambulance crew saw Donnie’s body they shook their heads and gently took Tara aside so that they could put his body on a stretcher, after the police had drawn a chalk line around it and photographed it from every angle.

“Did you see who did this?” asked one of the policemen. Tara was too busy crying to answer but Willow told him every detail that she remembered and the police set off, their sirens blazing, in search of Donnie’s killer. Willow held Tara in her arms as she cried and sobbed and then drove her home. It was not long before there was a knock at the door and Willow opened it. Two policemen and a detective were waiting outside. The detective showed Willow his badge.

“I’m Inspector John Brown, of the NYPD’s Murder Squad. We have good news and bad news. The good news is that we managed to catch the suspect. The bad news is who the suspect is. His name is Angelo Bambino, a senior member of the Bambino crime family based in New York. He’s done this offence once before but we had to let him go after two witnesses were murdered and a third was too terrified to testify even when the judge threatened him with prison, saying that the judge could only have him locked up, whilst the Bambinos could have him killed.”

“But isn’t he under arrest and in jail?” Willow asked. “I thought that it was very hard to get bail in a murder case.”

“Oh, he’s safely locked up, like he was the last time. It’s his crew that you have to worry about. We don’t know quite how many people are serving under him but there must be at least fifty, each one prepared if necessary to commit almost any crime including murder, and they have at least loose links with other crews that for a price would be happy to carry out their dirty work. Now you might think that they would not know where you live, but they have ways to get that through the legal process, and through other not so legal channels. I’d say within twenty-four hours to two days they are most likely going to track you down. You have several options.”

“Which are?”

“One, you can retract your statements and this murdering slimeball gets back on the streets. Two, you can go sofa-surfing, hiding with your friends and the less close members of your family, but the big problem with that is, it might be a year until the trial, and guests tend to resemble fish, that is, they go off after three days. Sooner or later you are going to run out of people willing to take you in, and even after the trial assuming it goes our way, the Bambinos might still want revenge. Hotels are very expensive to stay in long term and being homeless is not recommended. Noone will employ you without a valid address.”

“Three?”

“We can enter you into WITSEC-the Federal Witness Protection Program. The feds want this guy behind bars as much as you do. We can give you new names, new IDs, new passports, birth certificates, everything you need to support a new identity. We can hide you in another state out of the reach of the Bambinos until the trial, and after it. You can start new lives.”

“How about four?” asked Willow. Her emerald eyes had become a steely greenish-gray with rage.

“Four?”

“Let us have bullet-proof vests and pistols and if they come for us we’ll give us good as we get.”

He shook his head. “No can do. This is not small-town Texas or Wyoming where the only ones not allowed to carry guns are convicted felons and mental patients. The gun laws of New York State are very strict indeed. Only law enforcement agents can legally carry guns here. If you get caught with a gun here, even given the circumstances, you’re looking at two years in prison and a felony conviction, which means that you loose your right to bear arms for good, no matter what state you are in. Also they won’t come en masse like out of a cowboy film. At first they won’t come at all.”

“Bullet-proof vests are heavy things and over time you would get tired of wearing one. You would relax, get sloppy and the next thing you know, they’ve crept up behind you and put a bullet in your brain. Or you’d drive yourself crazy with fear and end up beating up an innocent person for looking at you the wrong way. If you end up in prison they can kill you there too, unless you get put in protective custody with the worst of the worst of the female prison population."

" Think about it. Twenty-three hours out of twenty-four in a cell, with three showers a week and a child killer as your likely cellmate. Or being shot in the back by the Mafia when you least expect it. And they won’t just be after you, they’ll be after Tara as well. The murder weapon when we found it had been cleaned, so if they can kill you both the case might well collapse from lack of evidence. You may be willing to face prison or death or homelessness when noone will take you in anymore, but can you put Tara through that as well?”

I can’t. I wouldn’t care if it was just myself that I have to worry about, damm the consequences, but I can’t let Tara die or let her snap and do something really stupid. Where is Tara anyway?

When she went back to where Tara was, she found her sitting at a table with a half empty bottle of vodka in front of her and tears running down her cheeks. Tara tried to get up but fell over and Willow caught her just in time. “Tara, what are you doing?”

“Drowning my sorrows. Why are there two of you?”

“Tara, you can’t do that. Alcohol will really mess up your brain and it’s addictive. You’ll need more and more of it to have the same effect and then you’ll end up as an alcoholic, unable to function without it and impossible to live with.”

And I think I love you. I can’t just let you end up as a worthless drunk or worse, riddled with bullets. Goddess, I swear whatever happens I will stay with you to protect you from whatever might be thrown at you, and to protect you from yourself as well. And maybe one day I will be able to tell you and make you understand just how much I love you and want you and need you.

“Tonight a couple of armed police will guard your house, and tomorrow we will smuggle you into the FBI headquarters and see about sending you somewhere safe and arranging your new identities. Don’t leave the house and whatever you do, don’t let Tara leave the house either and certainly don’t let her drive.”

Willow took Tara upstairs to bed and sat there just watching her as she drifted into an uneasy sleep. She looks so beautiful and so sad and one day I will bring a smile back to your face. She wondered what would become of them and how Tara would react to being told that she had to have her identity changed for her own protection. What if that drives her over the edge?

The next day Tara woke up clutching her head. “What happened? Did somebody hit me? Ah, now I remember, Donnie…Donnie’s not coming back. He’s dead and I’m never going to see him again and it hurts inside.”

“Tara, they caught the one who did it but he’s a gangster. If we stay here his friends will kill us before the trial. We’re going to have to have new names, new identities, and move to a new state.”

“I want to stay here, I want to go to the funeral, and visit my brother’s grave and talk to him.”

“If you go there you’ll end up sharing your brother’s grave, and believe it or not, I care about you a lot more then you know.”

Interesting. the gangster name seems a bit cliche but then again it is that way with every mob oriented movie which is pretty amusing. It's a good idea and written well. I'm looking forward to more of this, please keep it going. I'm curious though, Is this simply an AU story, or is it an UBER story?

Sorry for the bad gangster name. I will try and change it either tonight or within the next day or two if you want. It's part AU, part Buffyverse.

Thomas.

heh you don't have to change it...cuz i mean if you go look up any names from mobster movies...they're all that way. it was just a typical name, nothing wrong with it. it's good, and i can't wait for more!

Great beginning... I hope that Tara stays away from alcohol from now on... and realises the hotness of Willow... it's much better cure for loneliness...

Feedback-Yes please, I love feedback.
Notes-1-sorry for the shortness of this part of the fic, I am working on another one with a similar theme. 2-In real life they would most likely be allowed to pick their new names but I want to make it extra hard for them. In real life once a pair of lesbians in the UK had to enter witness protection and were given new IDs as sisters, forcing them into the closet, so it’s not as far fetched, as it seems.

Chapter Two-Sisters

Willow got very little sleep that night, spending most of it watching over Tara in case she tried to drink alcohol again, or do something even worse to herself. The next day Inspector John Brown was back in an unmarked police car. “I want you to bring your passports, your birth certificates and any other forms of ID that you have. We can’t let you have two identities. First it might get you found out and killed, second you might decide to use it for various types of fraud.”

Willow and Tara glared at him. “So not only do you want to take away our names, you also think we’re criminals? Whose side are you on?”

“No, of course not, but the majority of those in witness protection are criminals who have saved themselves from a long prison term or possibly being murdered by other criminals by giving evidence against their associates. The program was tailored with them in mind.”

Willow took Tara’s hand when they had got their IDs together, along with some books and Tara’s favourite stuffed animal and they got into the car and were driven into the FBI Headquarters in New York City. They filed in and were led to a small unmarked room deep within the building where they found Willow’s parents waiting for them. “Hi Susan,” Willow’s mother said to her. “Susan?” Willow looked at her blankly. “It’s your new name, so you’d better get used to it. Susan Collins. I’m Meredith Collins, that’s my new name. Your father is now Brian Collins. Tara is now your sister, Eleanor Collins. It was that or her being placed in a children’s home until the age of eighteen, as her parents refused to join her and change their names and the FBI has no legal powers to force anyone into witness protection who does not want to be protected.”

Oh great. So if I do somehow manage to tell her how I feel, and she feels the same way, we can’t kiss and cuddle and be holdy-handy in the street like I want to. We’ll be forced into the closet and locked inside; otherwise people will think that we’re committing incest.

“Where are you going to relocate us?”

“As far away from New York state as we can get, to a small town in the sunny state of California named Sunnydale. You’ll be safe there, I promise. It’s far from the big cities with their street gangs, and your house will be as big as it was here so you won’t lose out.”

“How long do we have to stay in hiding for?”

“Most likely for the rest of your lives, as the Bambinos will never forget or forgive you giving evidence against one of their senior underbosses. We would not be paying the expenses of changing your identies, relocating you to another state and providing a new house and reasonable jobs for your parents unless there was a very real danger that you would be killed or left brain damaged to stop you testifying. They did that to one would be witness once before we could rescue him. They didn’t kill him, they left him a vegetable trapped in his own body, aware of what had happened but unable to speak or write or communicate except by blinking his eyelids. Do you want to risk that happening to you or your family, or Tara?”

Willow shuddered and shook her head. Such a fate would be worse then death.

“Then hand over your IDs and we’ll issue you with your new ones and escort you to the airport so you can fly out to your new lives. A week before the trial is due I will come to your house in an unmarked police car and pick you up. You will be taken to New York and housed in a hotel just before and during the trial. I’m not allowed to coach you on what to say but if you just stick to the truth everything should work well and it should be enough to get your brother’s killer given ninety-nine years in a high-security prison. Then you can go back to Sunnydale and live your lives in peace without fearing every night that you will be maimed or murdered.”

Willow wiped away a tear as she and Tara handed over their passports, birth certificates and the other official documents that said who they were and watched an FBI agent feed them into a shredder. She looked at Tara and saw that tears were pouring down her cheeks. Poor thing, she’s taking it even worse then me. First she’s lost her brother, butchered in front of her, now she’s lost all her friends and even her own name. It was not long before they were issued with new ID papers, warned against losing them and flown to the airport to fly to California and start their new lives.

Yay for update-y goodness... Tara is in really sorry state... I hope Willow is able to make her life a little bit better... being "sisters" definately will hamper their being snuggly in public...

Color me really into this story. I love the sequence of this.

Damn, Tara's brother is killed right in frount of her, Willow's trying to protect her, but now they have to pretend their "sisters"? Ouch. Poor Willow and Tara.

Wilow and Tara are going to Sunnydale? Oh, I have a question, is there demons and vamps in this story? Just a thought.

I really like this story please continue :D

This story is evolving nicely. Although Willow has to try and act like a sisiter to tara now is going to be difficult for her.
Looking forward to the next update

I just realized that I forgot to thank everyone who has so far given me feedback, so here it is.

Dianneswillowtree, thank you.

ObsidianEsper, I’m thinking it’s partly AU and partly Buffyverse. And thank you so much for being my beta in the fic similar to this one that I am writing. You are so good at finding the weak spots in my fic so I can correct them.

Zampsa1975, yes, it most certainly is. I’m sure there will be some great Willow/Tara nookie later in this fanfic. Although them being “sisters” will make it hard for them to show their love to others.

jay/wt4evr yes, poor Donnie. And poor “Susan and Eleanor” .

musicmad10, if you’ve read chapter Two now you know.

Whatmakesyouhappy, I hope you liked chapter two just as much.

MsKittyB, yes, there are. Had the FBI known just how dangerous Sunnydale is, they would most certainly not have sent their witnesses there.

sweettara, thank you.

I apologise to all of you who have so far left feedback that I did not thank you earlier. For all those who read this fanfic, both those who did and did not leave feedback, if a new part of this fic does not go up tonight it is first, because I am working on a similar fanfiction to this one, but more *realistic*. And second, today is Saint Valentine’s Day and I want to spend at least part of it with my gorgeous girlfriend. (who has the same colour hair as Tara.) :)
