Just got chapters 5 and 6 back from Chris. Five will be posted in a few as soon as I got through his beta comments. Six, however, may need to undergo heavy revision and might not be posted at the same time. I don't really wanna spoil anyone, but Chapter Six is the one that makes the whole thing work, so I have to make sure that it is as great as it can be.

FIrst the feedback to the feedback.

Sally: Thanks for the comments. I've got much Willow/Tara goodness planned, so don't fret. :) As for Padme showing up, she might. But she, like much of the SW prequel cast, is playing second fiddle to Willow and Tara. The intent of the fic is to showcase the two of them doing their thing while the movie plays out around them. Movie characters will have an impact on the two of them if there's a reason to mix them together with the movie cast (or if I have no real choice but to do so).

tarebear: The next update explains what happened to our leading ladies, and I would suggest that you pay attention, because that sort of thing will play a role later on. ;)

And thanks for the comments. It means a lot.

Be back in a few with Chapter 5 (and maybe 6 as well, but don't hold me to that, K?)

I was right. I haven't had a chance to go through all of Chris' comments yet, but from what I can tell, Chapter Six is gonna need to be seriously fixed before I can post it. Sorry folks, but it looks like you'll only be getting one chapter this time. (Yeah, I know it sucks. But like I said before, Chapter Six has very important plot developments that need to work, otherwise everything else doesn't, so it's kinda important that it be done right.)

In the meantime, here's chapter five, the first to be posted using the nifty little graphic Chris has made for my fic. Enjoy! :D!

Image

Chapter Five

Tara couldn’t move, no matter how hard she tried. Her boots felt as if they had been filled with durasteel and her head trapped in a vice, forced to watch as the horrifying scene played out in front of them.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were in a large generator room, lightsabers ignited and twirling about in a fantastic display that put her best efforts to shame. The two were facing off against a demon out of Tara’s worst nightmares, a tattooed and horned devil cloaked in black and wielding a lightsaber with two blades.

The three made their way deeper into the room , where Obi-Wan, having fallen several stories after a swift kick from the demon, was trapped and forced to watch as Qui-Gon continued to battle the demon.

But then Tara felt something. She felt herself in Obi-Wan’s place, watching helplessly as Qui-Gon fought an increasingly one sided battle against the creature.

And she realized that Qui-Gon’s features were changing. His tall personage being replaced by one of shorter stature, his angular, bearded face taking on a softer, more feminine look. His cold blue eyes turning to emerald green. His long distinguished brown hair being replaced with a shortened red coif with the traditional Padawan braid…

Tara gasped as Willow suddenly appeared in Qui-Gon’s place, and her heart leapt into her throat.

“WILLOW!”

The demon, knowing the fight was now won, blocked Willow’s overhead strike, suddenly slammed his lightsaber against her arms, sending them up and knocking her lightsaber out of her hands. Just as quickly, he spun on his feet and dove the other blade of his weapon directly into the center of Willow’s chest.

Tara opened her mouth to scream, but nothing emerged. She felt as if the blade had been driven through her own chest. She had left Willow helpless, and it would haunt her for the rest of her life.

As Willow collapsed to her knees, she turned her head to look at Tara. She returned it. Neither of them blinked for what seemed like an eternity.

“Tara…” she whispered, almost too low to hear, before she collapsed to the ground.

**

“Tara. Master.”

The sound of Willow’s voice, louder and full of life, reverberated through her brain. She wondered how it could be that Willow was alive and speaking to her.

And then she opened her eyes to find Willow’s face over hers.

“Master, are you alright?”

Tara groaned and made an attempt to get to her feet, only to collapse before she even made it to her knees. She didn’t feel as bad as she had before, but she had a dull throbbing behind her eyes that made it difficult to concentrate. She also noticed the distinct smell of bacta, and realized that Willow had used the emergency supply to dab at the small cuts and lacerations Tara had sustained during the fight.

“I’m fine, Willow,” she said as she attempted to get to her feet again, this time with Willow’s help. As her hand grasped Willow’s, she once again felt a surge in the Force, the one that she had been feeling ever since the first time that they had met, but had not grown in vibrancy since the incident onboard the Trade Federation ship. And she could tell that it was growing stronger.

“I’m sorry I disobeyed you, Master,” Willow said in a rather clipped voice. “I know you told me to find someplace safe to hide, but I couldn’t bear to think of what would happen if you had gotten killed by the AAT. And I know that it was foolish and stupid of me to come back and rescue you, because I know I could have put you in even more danger, and even gotten killed myself, but…”

Tara placed a finger on Willow’s lips, ignoring the electric current through the Force that the action brought. “I’m alright, Willow. Nothing else needs to be said about it.”

Willow nodded, accepting the mild reproof. Then, without warning, suddenly flung her arms around Tara and gave her a fierce hug. Tara returned the hug, gently at first, then more forcefully, but not too hard as to actually cause either of them any harm. She shut her eyes and concentrated on keeping her healing trance going. It gave her something to do. And helped to keep her thoughts away from thinking about how much she was glad that nobody was watching.

“I was so scared,” Willow said, blinking away tears that threatened to break through her Jedi calm and wash over her face.

Tara stroked her hand through Willow’s hair. “It’s alright, Willow. I’ll be OK. I’ll be…”

She paused as she noticed the remains of the AAT. What had once been a rather lethal and dangerous weapons platform was now bearing severe scorch marks, its antipersonnel blasters and heavy cannon turret lying in several pieces not too far away. The broken and much abused parts of several droids scattered some distance away from the open hatch, the door of which was doing an effective job of pinning another droid against a nearby tree.

Tara drew herself away from Willow to walk over to the wreckage, gave it a cursory glance and turned back to her red haired Padawan, a rather stern look marring her features.

“Willow?” she asked, trying to keep a hint of amusement out of her voice. After all, Willow may be mischievous and daring, but she had never seen her do anything that would have made Tara think that she was capable of doing something like this.

Willow looked at the ground, shuffling her booted feet. “I’m sorry, Master. It’s just that…well, you know, if I hadn’t done anything, it would have blasted you across the area. And I’d kinda hate to have such beautiful scenery dirtied.”

Tara’s brow creased, realizing that Willow’s comments bordered on the sort that was forbidden by the Jedi Code. Tara, being a Master for over two years, knew the risk of such attachments. And she had thought that Willow would have known better than to think that way.

And yet, she couldn’t feel that, no matter how wrong the feelings were, that if she acted on them, she would not regret it.

Willow must have picked up on Tara’s momentary curiosity, and quickly scrambled to explain herself. “I mean…you know.” She gestured widely with her arms to the surrounding area. “The forest. Hate to have it mucked up by small little Master Tara chunks.”

Tara stared at Willow for a moment, before bursting out into laughter. She couldn’t believe that she had made a big deal out of something as insignificant as this. Willow must have thought it was funny as well, as she began to laugh, too.

The laughter continued for several more seconds until a second sound managed to overcome the first. Tara strained to make out the noise, and reached for the small electrobinoculars in her utility belt.

Willow rushed to her side. “What is it, Master?”

Tara scanned the skyline, or at least what she was able to see past the tree line. She lowered the electrobinoculars and made a dash to the edge of the forest, wincing in pain as she did so. Once she reached the edge of the forest, she scanned the sky again just in time to make out a starship streaking towards the heavens. Tara noted its trajectory and realized that the ship had been launched from somewhere in Theed.

That didn’t make any sense, though. The Federation army must have reached the city by now, and they wouldn’t allow any ship to leave that wasn’t one of their own.

As the realization of what she had just figured out came to her, Willow came up from behind. She paused to look up in the sky. “What is it, Master?”

Tara lowered the electrobinoculars, and Willow noticed that her eyes were distant and unfocused. “We’ve been left behind.”

Willow couldn’t accept that. “Master Qui-Gon wouldn’t leave us behind. Neither would Obi-Wan. They’d try to find us before they…”

“Willow, as far as Master Qui-Gon knows, we’re both dead,” Tara said. “We haven’t been able to reach them ever since we landed. And with the planet now crawling with battle droids and a fleet of battleships in orbit, he’s not going to wait around to try and find us. He would find the Queen and try to get a message to Coruscant. The fact that they had to take a ship to get out of here means that the situation must be even worse than we thought.”

“It always is,” Willow said, gently kicking a pebble near her booted feet. She felt a small grin on her face, and didn’t attempt to hide it. “I’m beginning to realize why you often kept me out of these sorts of missions, Master.”

Tara smiled gently. “Indeed, Padawan.”

**

The Lapiz Cutter approached the starboard side docking bay of the Droid Control Ship, its landing gear extended. The ship came to a graceful and gentle stop, which was a sharp contrast to the mood of its passengers.

“Lord Sidious will not be pleased by this turn of events,” Rune Haako said as he walked beside Nute Gunray, both making their way towards the hanger bay doors.

“I’ll deal with Lord Sidious,” Gunray grumbled. “He may be displeased, but we have accomplished our mission nevertheless. Naboo has been successfully conquered, and until the Republic agrees to listen to our demands, it shall remain ours.”

“I am not sure that I share your optimism for the situation,” Haako said as the two Neimoidians made their way through the hanger bay door. “The security holocams from the hanger identified two of the beings who escaped on the Queen’s ship were two of the Jedi who found their way off the Profiteer. What’s worse, OOM-9 reports that he’s been unable to contact BAS-163 regarding the status of the other two Jedi.”

Gunray scoffed as they approached the hatch leading to the bridge. “What can two Jedi hope to do against our army?” Inwardly, however, Gunray was frightened by the fact that there were still two Jedi on the surface who could spoil Lord Sidious’ plans. He only hoped that he would not find out about the incident.

His optimism lasted as long as it had taken for him and Haako to enter the bridge, where they were greeted by Daultay Dofine, having transferred to the ship following the incident on the Profiteer earlier.

“Viceroy, Lord Sidious has signaled his intentions to speak with you.”

Gunray swallowed heavily, then gestured for Haako to join him in the conference room.

**

The discussion with Sidious had proceeded rather smoothly, Gunray had to admit. The shadowy figure had demanded a status report from Gunray, who readily explained that the invasion had been successfully completed with little losses and no resistance. Sidious seemed to be pleased with this statement.

Then he asked the question Gunray had dreaded.

“And what of Queen Amidala? Has she signed the treaty?”

Gunray tried to come up with an plausible excuse, but his brain seemed to pick that moment to shut down, and he couldn’t think of any excuse that Sidious could believe. He thought briefly of what had happened the last time he had lied to Sidious. It was shortly before the blockade, when Hath Monchar had fled to Coruscant with the details for the invasion, hoping to sell them to the highest bidder and perhaps live in luxury on one of the purse worlds of the remainder of his life.

Which, as it had turned out, was rather short indeed. He knew that he could not risk lying to Sidious again, lest he follow in the steps of Monchar.

“She has…disappeared, my lord.”

The scowl on Sidious’ face, the only part that was visible, seemed to increase in size. “Disappeared?”

Gunray gave a small shake of his head. “Yes, my lord. One ship managed to get past the blockade, despite the best efforts of our gunners to destroy…”

“Be silent, Viceroy,” Sidious snapped. “I do not want Queen Amidala dead. At least, not yet. She is crucial to our plans for the future. I want her found and that treaty signed.”

Gunray could barely contain his surprise, and risked a glance at Haako, who showed an equal amount of surprise and fear. “But…my lord. It is impossible. The ship…it has jumped into hyperspace. We do know where…”

Suddenly a new figure emerged in the holofield beside Sidious. It too was cloaked in a dark colored robe, but the being was anything but human. In fact, it looked as if it had leapt out of an inferno to grasp Gunray by the throat and strangle the life out of him. Its head was crowned with a ring of horns, it face tattooed in an elaborate manner, and had eyes as cold and hard as the strongest Mandalorian iron.

Eyes that even now bore a hole straight into Gunray, as if doing so could kill the lecherous creature it perceived him, quite rightly, to be.

“And you shall not worry about that, Viceroy,” Sidious broke in, amplifying Gunray’s fear. “Concern yourself with the situation on the planet. Darth Maul will bring the Queen to you, after which…he will deal with whatever random elements you have left exposed.”

The hologram disappeared, and Gunray breathed for what appeared to be the first time in an eternity, turning to face Haako again.

Two of them?” he struggled. “This is getting out of control. We never wanted this.”
Haako shook his head. “There’s a lot about this we didn’t want. But we have to do the best we can with what we got.”

Gunray nodded, punching a control into the console built into the table.

“Prepare the Lapiz Cutter for return to the surface. And signal the Profiteer. Order it to lead the blockade back to Neimoidia. There is no longer any need for it. Naboo is ours.”

Whoa, dibbs. :D

Yikes on Tara's premonition. A rather dark foreshadowing of thing to come. Nasty and well written. Good job.

Tara certainly is understanding of Willow's disobience... and fitting that she babbles through the explanation of her actions :D... I think Yoda would have had her for breakfast if she'd been her padawan.

Tara chunks mucking up the forest. That was funny in a demented sort of way. ;)

I also like that you continued the naming scheme of the Neimodian Trade Federation ships. All names are related to economic terms in the books and movies. Grievous' ship was named the Invisible Hand, a reference to Adam Smith... Uh, sorry, don't mind me, I have a fascination with space ships and their names. :)

I just had a very scary thought. (I have more of those). What if Jango Fett would have been Faith?! Would the universe really be prepared for millions upon millions of Faith-clones?

Ah, enough scary thoughts. Loved the story!
Max : Do you mind if I drive?
Sam : Not if you mind me clawing at the dashboard and shrieking like a cheerleader.

Hey Useful_Oxymoron, be careful about proposing a universe full of Faiths because I think that Debra might trample all of us in an effort to get to such a universe! :)

Sith, this is a great chapter. I'm a big fan of take your time and work with the chapter till the chapter is right and feels right to you and your beta. From what I know from the movies about Jedi attachments (or rather, the lack thereof) Willow seems VERY almost-about-to-be-out-of-bounds with her attraction to Tara. So thank goodness that she's sort of prone to be disobedient or to color outside the lines, as it were, or else they would just trot merrily along, using the Force and not getting into any lesbian gay-type loving.

Also - trapped on Naboo together, presumed dead? Woo hoo!

I told you the reason for Tara's blackout would be explained. Thanks. :D

Tara certainly is understanding of Willow's disobience... and fitting that she babbles through the explanation of her actions :D... I think Yoda would have had her for breakfast if she'd been her padawan.

She may understand it, but that doesn't mean she likes it. ;)

Actually, I didn't "continue" anything so much as "borrow from the EU" again. Profiteer was the name given to the Trade Federation ship seen in the movie in the novels "Cloak of Deception" and "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter". I decided to use this name rather than the name its known in the Neimoidian language (which is Saak'ak, BTW).

I just had a very scary thought. (I have more of those). What if Jango Fett would have been Faith?! Would the universe really be prepared for millions upon millions of Faith-clones?

Yeah, that is a scary thought. What's even more scary is that Faith (and Buffy) are planned to be included in the saga, though its becoming more and more likely that it won't be happening until the second story.

Sally: Damnit, girl! You responded too damn quickly! Though I'm happy about it. (Makes me feel glad that I actually got readers. WHOO!)

Hey Useful_Oxymoron, be careful about proposing a universe full of Faiths because I think that Debra might trample all of us in an effort to get to such a universe! :)

Hell, if it means seeing lots and lots of Eliza Dushku, then trample away, Debra! :D! :p

Sith, this is a great chapter. I'm a big fan of take your time and work with the chapter till the chapter is right and feels right to you and your beta.

Yeah. Looking back on the previous four chapters, I've seem to created a situation of having too many problems that need to be explained (I'm really hoping that the next one, when I get it posted, will answer a few, if not all, of them).

Yeah, Willow and Tara are really crossing a line here. Of course, since this is the Kitten, no matter what, Willow and Tara have to get into a the whole lesbian gay type situation.

And if you think that sort of thing is bad now, just wait until the next chapter. All I will say is that we get a little bit of explanation about Tara's character and why, for being a prodigy Jedi and a hero in Willow's eyes, she's reluctant to think of herself like that. That little bit is the fulcrum upon which this whole thing lies, so you can understand why I need to get it just right. After all, I wouldn't want to disappoint my readers, now would I?

Read this over on Chris' site and just wanted to leave feedback here. I'm a little confused on your Willow/Apprentice Tara/Master timeline. They've known each other ten years but Tara has only been a Master a few years? Guess I'm just not following that, but I'm really enjoying the story overall. You've kept the pace moving and it's been a lot of fun to read! I can't wait for an update!

Trom DeGrey: Thanks for the comments. And you might not have long to wait for an update.

I've always known I was gonna get flak for this, so I'd better spell it out for what (I really, really hope) will be the final time.

61 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin. AKA "A New Hope"): Tara is born. (Where and the circumstances which lead to it to be explained in the next chapter)

58 BBY: Tara taken to the Jedi Temple to begin training.

53 BBY: Willow is born.

48 BBY: Tara becomes a Padawan. (Whose Master will be revealed later.)

43 BBY: Tara meets Willow in Coruscant's underworld, saving her from the advances of a thug. Shortly thereafter, Tara, for whom said mission was her Trial, becomes a Jedi Knight and chooses Willow as her Padawan learner.

33 BBY: Tara becomes a Jedi Master.

32 BBY: The events of "The Phantom Menace" (and this fic) occur.

Oh boy, Star Wars fans emerging from the woodwork in hordes! :) :wave My memories of SW are fading, and my knowledge never as in depth as some of you are displaying. wow. But, so nice to know you're there ... it's such a great 'verse.

I'm still along for the ride on this fic... I think there'll be lots of excitement before you're done. Keep it up!

Ah... so one doesn't need to be a Master to have a padawan. This is always my problem with AU stories, getting to know the universe it plays in ;-).

Tara's dream seemed familiar ("Duel of the Faiths", nice soundtrack;-) but I wonder where it came from. I don't remember how the actual fight went in ep1 (one of them died, this I know), but I remember wondering no one used a blaster-rifle to get rid of said dark jedi person:-). Hmm.. why does Tara think of him as a demon anyway?

You're allowed to post only chapter per update really. Better to post something you're comfortable with than rush it. You got to work with the stuff you've posted after all :P.

I still do wonder how Willow managed to utterly wreck that AAT and the droids inside. Probalby more Force than Saber, although a saber is a very usefull weapon on such distances. Tara must be curious about that as well since as far as I can tell Willow never displayed much combat skill in training? Granted, they did harm Tara, which is never a good thing with Willow around :devil . Had to smile at the 'little Master Tara chunks' :). Why did Willow scream just before Tara blacked out? I thought that was her being injured, but she does not appear to have suffered any injury in her first "1 vs. many" fight?

Now they got an entire planet to hide on, that should be enough shouldn't it? Or is there anything else they need to do, the Queen is safe for now right?

What's this about Jedi not allowed to have relationships? A quick glance at the 'most powerfull Jedi' list on that Wiki shows that not all Jedi's agreed with that stance ;-). Either way I don't see the use of disallowed relationships, if anything they will help keep you stable/grounded.

The history-list you posted is interesting, esp. the differences between Willow and Tara. Tara was a padawan for 5 years before becoming a Jedi Knight. Yet Willow has been a padawan for 11 years now ?? There seems to be a pre-padawan training, which for Tara was 10 years, for Willow that's next to impossible unless she started immediatly after birth :P.

I think I'm of to the Wiki again to find the teaching-route for Jedi. I'll try to ask less questions next time, honest :glasses

Anne: Yup. Lots of excitement and fun to come. Best to hold on tight. :)

Oh boy, Star Wars fans emerging from the woodwork in hordes!

And my world is a better place for it. :p

Cecile: Yeah, Darth Maul's coming. And I won't tell you whether or not he'll be getting involved with our girls. That would be giving away too much. ;)

And yeah, Willow and Tara are, as far as Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon know, are dead. I was planning to write a piece involving those two that states that for Chapter Six, but it may come in Chapter Seven instead. (I should also warn you right now that Chapter Seven may not be fully Willow/Tara central, but the characters will be talking about them. Kinda reminds of that joke about Star Trek II where, even when Kahn isn't on screen, they're talking about him.)

Grimmy: Well, I never actually stated that Darth Maul got sacked by blaster rifle, so I don't know where that came from. As far as Tara thinking Maul is a demon...well, come on. Doesn't he look a whole hell of a lot like one?

As far as Willow and the AAT...it was my intention that Willow was so distraught over Tara's injury that she went on a rampage, taking her anger out on the ones she knew were responsible (sound familiar?). And the scream was intended to be her venting her rage, but I guess it came off as being ambiguous. While that wasn't my intention, hindsight being 20/20, it does come off being better that way.

Nope. That isn't enough. The planet's still occupied, so Willow and Tara, along with whatever allies they can find, still need to deal with that.

What's this about Jedi not allowed to have relationships? A quick glance at the 'most powerfull Jedi' list on that Wiki shows that not all Jedi's agreed with that stance ;-). Either way I don't see the use of disallowed relationships, if anything they will help keep you stable/grounded.

Indeed. But the lack of relationships and attachments is meant to shield a Jedi against that which may lead to negative emotions, and thus the dark side.

There is no set teaching method when it comes to Jedi. You go to the Temple at a very young age, and are considered a Youngling until the age of 13, where you're either taken as a Padawan of a Knight of Master or reassigned to some other organization of the Jedi Order. Being selected as a Padawan can happen at any age, but has to happen before the age of 13. And, as has been pointed out before, Jedi can be Padawan's into their adult lives. Need I point out that Anakin was a Padawan for over ten years as well?

I'll try to ask less questions next time, honest :glasses

No. Please. Ask. It gives me some sort of satisfaction to be able to prove my knowledge in this area. :lol :p

G'day, Sith.

Sorry it's taken me so long to leave feedback, but I've been kinda busy. Stupid reality.

Hmm, interesting. Is this simply Tara's fears twisting her imagination, or is it a bona fide force vision, as it seems to be. It seems to me that it is indicating that Tara stands upon a precipice, a choice, a metaphorical fork in the road. One path will lead to Qui-Gon's death, as seen in TPM; the other leads to Willow falling in his place. Much badness there, I think. I can't see Willow lasting 30 seconds against Darth Maul in battle, not at her present state. (Speaking of which, Yay! My favorite Zabrak is on the scene.)

So, Willow's scream wasn't one caused by injury, but rather from ... what, rage? Hmm, much badness lying that way I think. From the rather extreme action Will seems to have undertaken, she might have accidentally tapped into the dark side. I can't see even a lightsabre doing that much damage to an AAT, unless Willow stuck it somewhere she really shouldn't have.

Hmm, how long was Tara out of commission? The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem that much time has passed, not enough to cover everything that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had to do before they got to Theed and busted out with the Queen.

But otherwise, nice update. Now, what are Jedi Master Maclay and Padawan Leaner Rosenberg gonna do now? Try and find some transport off world? Or are they going to try and assist any Naboo resistance effort against the Trade Federation's droid army? I wonder ...

Cheers,
Paul.

As I've never watched Eps 2 & 3 yes you would :P

About hitting Darth Maul with a blaster rifle, sorry I confused you as you indeed never said that. That was just my tactcal alter-ego wondering why people would want to fight their enemy using the same weapons... fairness ?

I really don't know much about the temptation and fall to the Dark Side, which I presume was in Eps 2 & 3 mostly. But assuming your quote " to shield a Jedi against that which may lead to negative emotions, and thus the dark side." is approx. how the Jedi think it seems rather simplistic ? In my view it would be better to learn how to handle negative emotions, as opposed to avoid them. Eventually a Jedi will have to deal with some negative emotion in his life anyway (anyone does). The Jedi approach reminds me a bit of Giles and we all know how well that went :lol.

I would say caring for someone, like Willow obviously cares for Tara, is a hugely positive emotion.. granted you'll get some possible negative ones with it. That's life, here on earth anyway :lol.

And yeah DM does look somewhat demon yeah, which is good. Evil should look evil, StarWars nicely does that... keeps it simple :P The light/dark (force) divide is sometimes a bit too simple for me, but as mentioned I can't be the judge on that 'cos never having seen Eps 2 & 3 (which I'm told do the most to mix 'm up). Promo of Ep. 3 was neat though, "Darth Vader? Yes my Lord. Riiiiiiiise" Image

I've gotten the redone Chapter Six, and it will be up inside of the next half hour. First though, response to feedback.

Paul: Well, I can tell you that, as far as Tara's Force Vision goes (and yes, it was indeed a Force Vision), that when we get to that point, it's gonna be very interesting.

And yeah, Willow's walking on a dangerous tightrope there. But she was doing out of love for Tara, so I guess that makes it OK.

Or does it? ;)

Well, as was hinted at before, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar-Jar are going through the core as the events are going on and she comes to shortly before they, along with Queen Amidala, leave the planet, so I would have to think that it wasn't that long. Of course, time is really an iffy issue here, so I can't be 100% honest about it.

As for what they're gonna do now...just wait and see. :devil

Boadecia: Glad to have ya onboard. :-D

Grimmy:

Indeed, the Jedi's edict to avoid negative emotions seems a little too simplistic. But you have to look at it from their point of view. For them, it's been a thousand years since they've had to deal with anything as bad as what's gonna end up happening, and they've tried ever since to ensure that it wouldn't happen again. But of course, the best way to get away with something is to do it in plain view of everyone, and that's why Palpatine was able to get away with what he did.

I would say caring for someone, like Willow obviously cares for Tara, is a hugely positive emotion.. granted you'll get some possible negative ones with it. That's life, here on earth anyway :lol.

You would think so, but then again, that's the same way Anakin felt for Padme, and we all know how well that turned out...

Chapter Six

Willow and Tara had decided to make their way deeper into the forest. It was highly unlikely, Tara had thought, that the Trade Federation would make a move into the area, given the fact that it held little to no strategic value to them. In addition, given the fact that the droid army would, at this moment, be spreading out from Theed to occupy any other area that would be considered a safe haven, it made no sense to try to go anywhere else.

Still, they needed to try to contact some allies. The mission briefing they had been dealt before leaving Coruscant had indicated that Naboo held two indigenous races: the human colonists that arrived from Grizmallt over four thousand years ago, and an amphibious race that lived in the swamps. Willow had sensed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan underground, before their flight from the planet; perhaps they had contacted the reclusive people. And she knew that, even though the Naboo were a peaceful race, they would mount some form of resistance. They would have to try to find it.

But it would have to wait till the morning. The sun was about to go down, and between the dangerous animals that lived in the forest combined with the likelihood of droids patrolling the area, skulking about in the dark didn’t seem a good idea.

And at any rate, it had given the two to think about what had occurred during the past several hours.

Tara really couldn’t understand what it was about the situation that was making her worry. Ever since she had first encountered Willow, she had always had a special connection to her, and she had always figured that it was more along the usual lines of a Master looking out for the best interests of her Padawan, but lately she had begun to wonder if it was something more.

Ever since they had escaped from the Trade Federation ship, Tara had felt more…complete. She couldn’t really explain why. She had always been a studious Padawan, and had been considered among the most talented of her time. She had progressed quickly, becoming one of the youngest Jedi Masters in the history of the Order. But still, there was always something she felt was missing from her life. Given that the Jedi were not supposed to form attachments to anyone or anything, she had tried to dismiss those feelings as something that would only distract her.

Then came the day she had decided to choose Willow as her Padawan. Given that the two would be student and master, she felt that the feeling of loneliness she had always felt would be lifted. Granted, Willow’s lightsaber skills were not up to where Padawans her age would normally be, and she did have a tendency to be more independent and spontaneous than most Jedi had any right to be, but Tara knew that she would eventually become a great Jedi, perhaps even having a seat on the Council.

For her part, Willow was retracing the steps that had brought her to this place. When she had encountered Tara for the first time, she had figured that she was some criminal who would abandon one easy mark for another. And certainly, that thug whom she had gotten the drop on was nothing compared to a ten year old girl with no comlink or means to defend herself. Of course, she should have realized that a being with a lightsaber was friendly, but she had heard tales from other Padawans about Jedi who had been killed and their lightsabers stolen and used as trophies.

She had felt a kinship with Tara then, and was overjoyed when she was selected to become her Padawan learner. At first their relationship was one of mutual respect, with Willow looking up to and hoping to make her Master proud, but as she grew older, she began to feel something more for her Master. Of course, being taught all her life to not hold attachments, she knew she shouldn’t think that way.

Then again, she did have a nasty habit of doing things she wasn’t supposed to. And so she had always carried a secret love for her Master. She had long suspected that Tara knew about her secret love, given the fact that with her Force abilities, there was no such thing as secrets between them.

The question was…why didn’t she want to talk about it?

Willow was determined to find out.

**

They had set up camp near a fallen tree trunk some time later, Willow using her cloak as a makeshift blanket as her head rested on the ground, while Tara sat cross legged in front of a fire she had managed to start using the old reliable way of rubbing two twigs together. Willow had laughed at the sight of her using such old techniques when it could have been just as easily accomplished with a little judicious use of the Force, but Tara reminded her that the Force wasn’t a commonplace tool to be used for whatever reason a Jedi wanted.

Willow sat up, gently discarding her robe beside her and inched closer to Tara. Once she got there, she wrapped her arms around her knees and tilted her head to look at the fire.

“Master,” she said. “You’ve been awfully quiet.”

Tara turned to look at her. “I’ve just…I’ve…been thinking.”

Willow’s eyebrows rose ever so slightly. “About?”

Tara hesitated. “I think you know, Willow.”

Willow was taken aback by how forward sounding Tara’s comment had been. She certainly hadn’t meant to imply that she was ignorant as to her Master’s feelings, but she so rarely opened up that she had come to accept it, even though she had wished her Master would be more open.

“I’m…,” she began, but the words got caught in her throat, failing to pass through her lips, no matter how much she tried to do it.

“It’s OK, Willow,” Tara said, turning away to look at the fire. “I know that it’s not something that we should…”

“But we should,” Willow interrupted, placing a hand on Tara’s leg. “I mean, I don’t mean to be disrespectful, Mast…Tara, but we’ve never been able to…well, you know, talk about things like that.”

Tara gently nodded, and Willow noticed that her eyes had begun to well up in tears. “I’m s…ss…sorry about that, Willow. I want to…but…”
Willow, as adept as she was with the Force, didn’t need to use it in order to know that her Master was attempting to hide some terrible pain from her. “Tara, we’ve know each other for the better part of ten years, almost. I would like to think that we know each other enough by now to be honest with each other.”

Tara didn’t turn around, but Willow could feel that some of her natural defenses had lessened. “It’s…I know that you’ve always had the deepest respect for me, Willow. But I always feared that you would…would…lose that respect…if you found out…who I really am.”

Willow couldn’t really believe what she was hearing. “But I know who you are. You’re Tara Maclay, accomplished Jedi Master, hero to many…”

“…and an accident,” Tara interrupted, bringing Willow’s tirade to a sudden halt. “I’m…I’m not…I’m not…” Her finely trained Jedi calm and resolve finally broke and she buried her face in her knees, crying softly.

Willow inched closer and wrapped her arms around Tara, gently at first, then with more firmness when she showed no signs of resisting. “I…I don’t want to pry, Master. I’ve always wanted to know more about your early life, but if it’s that bad…”

“No,” Tara’s voice came back muffled, her head still buried in her knees. She lifted it and tried to brush her tears away. “You deserve to know, Willow. Especially since we might end up dead very soon.”

Willow didn’t like the new defeatist attitude her Master had adopted, but she kept herself from commenting about it. She didn’t want to appear ungrateful that she was finally opening herself up to her.

“As you know, infants with Jedi potential were identified from birth and brought to the Temple,” Tara began. “This makes them less likely to be susceptible to fear, hate and anger. I was…different.”

Willow couldn’t help it. Her curiosity was piqued. “How, Master?”

Tara swallowed. “I was…given to the Temple at an early age, but older than a Jedi trainee should be. And my mother…was a Jedi.”

Willow’s eyes widened. “A…Jedi? But I thought…”

“That Jedi weren’t allowed to marry?” Tara asked, a small smile cracking her features. “You’re right. My parents…were never married.”

“Then how…?” Willow began, and then the realization hit her. “Oh.”

Tara nodded. “It was on a mission to Corellia. She was sent to investigate the murder of a high ranking Republic official who was a liaison to the Diktat. What nobody knew at the time was that the official had been bribed to fake his own death by a gang of smugglers in order to bring a Jedi to Corellia.”

“And they captured her?” Willow asked cautiously.

“Yes,” Tara replied with a slight nod to her head. “Oh, she put up a brave fight, of course. Or at least, that’s what I hear. I was only told about the details by my own Master when he thought I was old enough to understand. Like most Jedi, I had no idea about who I was before I had come to the Temple.”

Willow’s eyes took on a curious gleam. “And what did your Master say?”

Tara’s smile grew. “My mother was an accomplished Jedi, at least until that incident. But after that…” She hesitated. She had come this far, she might as well tell Willow everything. “One of the smugglers who had captured her had taken a fancy to her, and decided to take her as his property. At first she resisted, but she eventually relented, especially after she learned that she was…”

“Pregnant.” Willow finished.

Tara nodded, placing her hands in front of the fire to warm them. “After she learned she was pregnant, she knew she had to find a way to escape. She couldn’t let me be born in such disreputable company, so when the smuggler’s ship hit port at Duro, she escaped and caught a transport to Alderaan. She gave birth to me there. I stayed there until I was three, then she took me to the Temple. Despite my age, I was accepted and soon began my training.”

Willow nodded, her respect for Tara having grown a great deal during her tale. “What happened to your mother?”

Tara’s voice grew softer, so soft that Willow had to strain to hear her words. “She left the Jedi Order and boarded a passenger liner to Alderaan. But…she never made it there. The ship was brought out of hyperspace in a remote system and assaulted by pirates.”

Willow paused, unsure of what to say. It was obvious that Tara had taken a great risk in telling her what she did, and she didn’t want to do anything that would shake her Master’s confidence.

“How come you’ve never told me this before?” she asked.

Tara shrugged. “I’m…mm…I’m not e-exactly…well, it’s no surprise I haven’t accomplished as much, as a Jedi, as maybe I should-“

Willow smiled and wrapped her arms around Tara’s waist. “Master, no offense, but that’s what makes you a dummy. You might not think so, but I think you’re special. You may think that you’re not the perfect Jedi given what’s happened to you, but your mother obviously knew, because she was willing to risk bringing you to the Temple because she knew the type of Jedi her child could be. And I know that if she were alive today and could see you now, she would be proud.”

Tara was surprised that Willow had said this, and even more surprised that she had allowed herself to make her Padawan’s words make her feel better. “Perhaps she would. But at any rate, I’m glad you think so.”

She got up and waved her hand across the fire, using the Force to create a gust of wind that blew the fire out. “But I think that we need to get some sleep. We have a long day tomorrow.”

Willow nodded, and moved back to the fallen tree trunk. She put her back to it and wrapped her cloak around her. “Good night, Master.”

“Good night, Padawan.”

Wow, tragic beginnings for Tara. I can see on the one hand why she has carried such secret pain with her for so long, but on the other hand, what happened to her mother wasn't her fault. I'm glad she finally opened up to Willow about it. I guess from their connection via the Force they can sense things like emotions and love and lies, but not "read each others' minds" in the traditional sense, yeah?

Interesting that Willow knows that Tara must know of her love for her and wonders why they have never spoken of it. That kind of self-control is probably second nature to Jedi, so although it seems to be somewhat contrary to Willow's nature to not push things, I guess her Jedi training is what has allowed her to go on for several years with love for her Master (heh, I said Master) and not bringing it up openly, verbally anyway.

I love the idea about going deeper into the forest, since that is a metaphor for going deeper into one's self. Did you intend it?

Sally:

Yeah, you really can't read what's going on in other people's minds by using the Force. Well...you could, but that's the Dark Side, and right now, neither of them are that far gone.

Wow, tragic beginnings for Tara. I can see on the one hand why she has carried such secret pain with her for so long, but on the other hand, what happened to her mother wasn't her fault.

I'm glad that you thought that way, because that's what I was hoping to convey (and what caused me to go back and rewrite this part. You can see now why I needed this to be right). My intention was (once again) to parallel Buffy canon as close as I could. Tara's mother being a fellow Jedi was a natural, though I couldn't have her die when Tara was 17, becuase then she'd really be shit out of luck as far as becoming a Jedi is concerned. And even if I didn't go that route, she would have left the Order anyway, as it was common during these times that Jedi children have no connection to their parents. As for why she carried it with her, well...that's still sort of a secret, as it will be explain later, though I can tell you that her Master (who was first mentioned this chapter, though still unnamed) was among those who brought the smugglers in question to justice.

Willow's love for Tara has never really been a secret, as far as the two of them are concerned. But for the most part, it's been more of the "respectful Master/Apprentice friendship" variety than the "coffee, food, kisses and gay love" variety. That, of course, is starting to change.

I love the idea about going deeper into the forest, since that is a metaphor for going deeper into one's self. Did you intend it?

Perhaps, though not in the next chapter, as it focuses more a bit on the things going on around them. That isn't to say their presence won't be felt, as the characters talk about them, and we learn how they fit into the overall plot.

i like it very much when they have doubts about their relationship.

Irene:

Wow, I've missed quite a few updates. So sorry about that. But I'm all caught up now. Forgiven? :blush

There's nothing to forgive, Hot Tamale. Us SMUT agents gotta stick together through anything. :blush

I must say, your tale is getting more and more fascinating with each update. I'm amazed at how easy it is to follow even though I'm not very well versed in all things Star Wars. Like I've said before, I get the gist of the movie and so it's easy to picture scenes and such. But for someone who isn't that familiar with it, following your story wouldn't be to difficult.

I'm glad you think that. One of the (many) hangups I had in writing this was its appeal to those who post on the Kitten, as I didn't think that this would be the sort of thing they would like to read. Of course, now I know better (especially after getting an e-mail from somebody who doesn't even post here).

I also want to thank you for providing a timeline of events...its very helpful.

No problem. Now whenever someone asks what's going on, I can always say "go check out this post" instead of providing an explanation.

So Willow knows that Tara know that she has lovey dovey feelings for her? Hmm, and they haven't been discussed. Well as Jedi and Jedis in training, they have been taught that emotional involvement can be a 'crutch' of sorts for them. But I also feel that it can be a strong alli. When you love someone there is nothing you wouldn't do to protect them.

Indeed, that is the general direction things will eventually end up going. Of course, we've seen how well that was done with Anakin/Padme. Will things turn out better for our ladies?

...

Well, I'm obviously not gonna tell you now, now am I? :p

The way Tara was brought into the world is shocking and so so sad. How unfortunate it was to learn that her mother was, for a lack of a more kinder word, assaulted and then finding out that her mother had met a tragic end. Tara is stronger than she believes herself to be. I'm happy that she finally opened up to Willow though, definitely a step in the right direction.

I cannot say enough how much people enjoy that. It was the thing I beat into the ground trying to work. It makes me feel happy that people can respond to it like that.

:clap Sith...you are so clever. I can see why you chose Tara as Master and Willow and her Padawan learner. Kuddos to you! :-D

Please. You're gonna give me a swelled head. Thanks, in any event. :blush

G'day, Sith.

Well, it's already been pointed out, but that little scene with Tara lighting the fire illustrates what might be a serious conflict later on. Willow still retains her over-reliance on her powers here, somewhat anyway.

The truth of Tara's past is tres harsh, though I do have to wonder; why the hell did those smugglers want to capture a Jedi? For prestige amongst the criminal underworld? Kind of a silly plan to my way of thinking. Doing something like that would only bring down a bucket load of unwanted attention, I'd imagine. Plus, unless they knew about, and actually had, some ysalamiri, I have to wonder how the heck they kept Tara's mother a prisoner anyway.

But I wonder, could the pain of such a beginning be the start of a dark path for Tara? Given Buffy cannon, Willow is the most likely suspect for a slide to the Dark Side, but given this information, it could just as easily be Tara. Interesting indeed.

One little quibble though; in a forest environment, filled with potential predators, I would have thought it a better idea to leave the fire burning. I suppose extinguishing it might be better given their fugitive status, but I would expect anything looking for them at night to be using some sort of thermal imaging. Not that it really matters. :-D

Great update.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Sith - another good update. Tara has finally opened up to Willow but her story is a sad one. Tara's mother must have suffered but at least she saved her daughter from the same pain.

Willow was very understanding and this surprised Tara. I'd like to know how Tara 'thought' Willow was going to react to her story.

Hopefully, Tara will soon be able to open up about her feelings for Willow.

Looking forward to your next update.

Hmm. You're right. Am I being totally sneaky, or is it just coincidence? ;)

Well, it wasn't really my intention to explain that, as it is, for the most part, not terribly important as far as this fic goes. Perhaps in the second, I'll explore it in a bit more depth (this obviously tells me that such exposition is needed).

But I wonder, could the pain of such a beginning be the start of a dark path for Tara? Given Buffy cannon, Willow is the most likely suspect for a slide to the Dark Side, but given this information, it could just as easily be Tara. Interesting indeed.

Indeed it is interesting. I'm leaving enough clues around that, when the time comes, it could be either one of them who takes the Anakin path.

One little quibble though; in a forest environment, filled with potential predators, I would have thought it a better idea to leave the fire burning. I suppose extinguishing it might be better given their fugitive status, but I would expect anything looking for them at night to be using some sort of thermal imaging. Not that it really matters. :-D

Well, you're right. It doesn't really matter, though its not much of a stretch to assume that they created a barrier around themselves that wareded off natural predators.

Caz:

Tara has finally opened up to Willow but her story is a sad one. Tara's mother must have suffered but at least she saved her daughter from the same pain.

It may look that way now, but you never know.

Impossible to see, the future is.[/Yoda] ;)

Willow was very understanding and this surprised Tara. I'd like to know how Tara 'thought' Willow was going to react to her story.

You will, though not in the next chapter. I've got other things planned for that.

Hopefully, Tara will soon be able to open up about her feelings for Willow.

Don't worry. I can guarantee you that by the end of the story, that will happen. :)

i must admit that i am not a star wars fan, but this story nonetheless, interests me. willow and tara being in it is the numero uno reason, but you know, this setting is just different. i'm very much interested as to what this fic will turn out to be.... imagine me glued on my computer screen - and hey, this is a good thing... this only means "updates please?" :)

good job ;)

God, poor Tara. :( Losing her mother at such a young age and finding out she was the result of an infinitely less than loving union. Luckily, she had Willow to confide in this case. But I have to wonder : will Tara meet her... progenitor somewhere along the road?

On a lighter note, I already requested Grievous, but might I request Count Dooku as well? :glasses

Great update!

Sam : Not if you mind me clawing at the dashboard and shrieking like a cheerleader.

hey sith!

i'm glad that tara let down some of her defenses and let willow in on some of her insecurities (even if she thought it was because they might die soon) especially about how she thought she was a mistake. i'm really glad that willow was able to reassure her, and may i just mention that she said so so eloquently too! brownie points for our willow!

i think it will be quite a while yet before we see them say,"to hell with the Jedi Code," and choose to be more than master-padawan... or i think they might not need to quit their day job since it has been mentioned before that even the Council may have felt that they are stronger together and that they will play a big part in the grand scheme of things (as Qui-Gon put it)... and as a side note, i perused the wookieepedia and finally found that there are exceptions to the no attachments tenet (although there wasn't any mention of examples) so there is hope for them yet! and might i add that i was a little overwhelmed at how big the star wars universe really is and how totally miniscule... no, atomic... my knowledge really is.

i can't wait for willow/tara-mentioned-only chapter.

good job with this one sith!

AlysonGoddess: As I said before, full out Willow/Tara smootchies will happen by the end of the fic, though I can assure you that one of the upcoming chapters will give you a little tease. (Because I'm just nasty like that. ;) )

shane: Thanks for the kind words. Updates are coming. I just gotta wait on Chris to send them back to me.

Useful_Oxymoron: Yeah, Tara's upbringing was tragic. (It was like that in the Buffyverse, so why should it be any different here? ;) ) As for meeting her progenitor...well, let's just say you might wanna keep an eye on the next few chapters.

And yes, Count Dooku is coming. Maybe sooner than you think. ;)

I'm glad you (and everyone else) though so. I gotta admit, I had fits trying to figure out how to pull that off.

and as a side note, i perused the wookieepedia and finally found that there are exceptions to the no attachments tenet (although there wasn't any mention of examples) so there is hope for them yet!

Yeah, there are some exceptions to that, though I should point out that those exceptions exist because of what the pre-prequel EU stated about the Jedi, and the infamous Lucas Retcon Machine working overtime to make the pieces fit together.

and might i add that i was a little overwhelmed at how big the star wars universe really is and how totally miniscule... no, atomic... my knowledge really is.

Well, if you don't get what I'm saying in the fic, feel free to go check it out. It really is a handy tool.

i can't wait for willow/tara-mentioned-only chapter.

I hope that you enjoy it.
