Ooo, super pleased. The Willow and Taraness is approaching! :applause Hey bardgirl, thanks for letting me rave, and I do love college. It's superb fun. I didn't mean to sound like it was getting me down, it has been the best bit of my school life. I just don't have enough time to do everything that I want or need to do. Too many places to go and people to see. :glasses Plus *cough* homework to do. :whistle Anyhoozers, I still love your story and will check as much as I can for updates. Used to be able to every day but now it'll be every other day, hopefully.

Wow, I've missed, like... four updates? wowza. But on the other hand, I got a good twenty minutes of reading your quite charming fic. I'd love to ride around in your pocket and be pulled out every now and then to say something nice to you.

Oh... and the story's shaping up very nicely too. I love the role that Buffy's taking. Otherwise who knows how long it would take our two to figure things out?

Okay, Willow has admitted she loves Tara, and it is obvious Tara is in love with Willow. Now, it's time for them to talk. I still can't believe these ladies haven't talked much since Willow's night-in-shining-armour moment.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Gosh, how two people can confuse the heck out of themselves (and me).. :) . It is indeed amazing that Tara and Willow don't seem to hang out together much of the time. Advice to Tara; you'll have to almost drag Willow out of work at a sensible time... she's so into responsible mode she doesn't see she's NOT setting a good example anyway :) .

Just say 'hi' and have lunch together daily (just the two of them of course) or such, would be a nice start. Hmm.. another method to get Willow out of the near-wrecked office is to play the Tara-has-to-work-here-too card, might work better : -->>: . Maybe Willow could take a small vacation, she surely has enough leave left to spare.

About me being sort of anti-buffy, thats toward the season5-onwards Buffy on TV mostly (season-6 onwards for sure). Just didn't care much for her attitude there (on TV). You're Buffy is much more to my liking, she can play referee (or cupid, heh) all she likes :-). So thats definitly a compliment for your story.

Not sure why you keep thinking that your story or updates might be not good enough for us. Sure, some chapters are a bit short but you tend to post those together with other chapters anyway. Other then that, this is a nice story... no need to hide after every update, honest :)

Much Ado About Nothing Impaticular, Really.....

Postby thebardgirl » Tue Sep 30, 2003 6:27 am

I am so happy i've got this board to come to, i tells ya' my stupid calculus class is the worst thing invented on this small planet i call home, except you know, war and disease and such. bah! bah i say to all things tangenty! hmmm sorry there, getting off topic....but being on topic, the story is now coming along nicely, and i'm getting to the point soon...so i hope you enjoy this crazy and i mean CRAZY update, because, well, its just......how do you say.....CRAZY. and such, and alike. i think i was really bored one night and thought, "hey, let's just make things even more strange!" and so, here it is. ENJOY!

Washi-yeah, they realize it! if only they would realize that they both realize it and thus realize their plans for the future...does that make sense? ah well, yea, buffy's cool in my world. i'm glad you like her too.

Sappho-yes willow and taraness will ensue, it just you know, takes a whole heck of alot to happen in my world, i guess. oh i'm happy to know college is fun; i'll be looking forward to it. well i hope you get a chance to keep reading and replying, i love hearing from you, and everyone.

Tempest Duer-ah! See, i told you i'd update frequently, and now, you got to speed read! whoo to that, i'm glad you're replying again, though, i missed my pocket fiend. i mean friend, friend. oh lord, if i left willow and tara to figure it out in this world, i'd have to make this story twice as long, or have a hurricane hit. either way, it wouldn't be pretty.

bluewillowwitch-well then, you work person you, i feel low down and ashamed that i can be tired after a 7 hour day at school. i guess, complaining about my situation isn't valid unless i look at others' first. and hey! no 3 day non-sleep days for you missy! i'll come to your house, and threaten you with apricots not to work so long! and beware, i'm good with dried fruit.

the vamp nurd-HEY! I DO TOO! it's just, hard to think with that image, especially with it being stuck in there for days on end. DAYS I SAY! I'm glad you enjoyed, and i'm happy that Buffy is looking good as the balancer of T & W. oh dear you're struggling for breath? what'd i say that made you laugh so much? hmmm...you know what always makes me laugh for no apparent reason? umpa loompas....and i don't know why. is there an umpa loompa near the vecinity of your computer? there might possibly be...

sam darls-yea, the realization has kicked in, and so now must the kicking of these two into action begin. KICK I SAY!

snuggle79-no no, lil' luci's fine. in fact, i'm okay with the satanistic title; i don't look good in white. oh lord, i really want to just scream it at tara, but i can't quite do that, can i? because then she'd be like: "where'd that huge voice come from?" and i'd be like: "Whoops...sorry! wrong reality!" hmm...'cookie's fortune' well no, no, that's not what i was going for. but anymore hints and i'd be killing what surprise there is left. i'm glad i've got you curious, only trouble is, can i KEEP the curiousity? hmm....alright pandora, i'll just tell you one last thing: *whispers* it's coming soon.....

The Rose24-yes, time for those two to talk! i say let's put them into a chamber for 24 hours....but, alas, that is not the way it shall be....yet. yeah, i guess the one big fault i now see about this story is how in the heck they couldn't have talked that much together...i guess my excuse is that willow and tara DID talk....just always on a business level, and were too afraid to broach any other topic...ergo the nervousness of talking now.....

foreverpiper-whoo you love zee update, so i'm happy now! oh, yes, you can be my assistant, in fact, you should be my co-hija del diablo person......that'd be cool. and i think i have met lucifer, on several occasions, just in lots of human forms...like past teachers and such....

Grimlock72-yeah, they're just a confusin' bunch. i should smack 'em and then pull them together in a big hug. that's what i call group therapy. hmmm yeah, as i explained to The Rose24, i always thought subconsciously that the two did talk, and hang around each other, but always on a business level since both could feel the tension, and didn't want to do something stupid. I've done that personally for 8 months non-stop, and it wasn't even requited!

AH! You see the thingy of what Tara must do, you know, you're a real bright one.....and yes, a small 'hi' would be nice, but in my world, everything's big i guess. Ooooo someone's guessing closer to the truth than anyone else yet....that's pretty schnazzy...:D

now you see, there's something that i don't normally tell anyone about my buffy watching habbits, but i've never seen the first 6 episodes of season six. you're probably wondering how in the heck i've survived let alone understood any of s6 onward, but i had a friend who got me into it just after they showed s6 (and explained everything), and reruns are a pain, and the dvds aren't being speedy......and...and...i'm still getting over this....so i don't really know what happened to the buffy character....whatever it was, i'm glad you like my buffy! and i accept that compliment full-heartedly!

Ah, well i'm kind of worried just in general. i'm a worrier, and also after lurking for a year or so, i'm worried that i won't meet the mark for fic on the board. that's why i'm always so amazed at the response i get. i won't hide then, although i did like camping for a bit. it was fun in a sort of "diliverance" kind of way. thanks again for reading.

Okay dudes, i can garrante, that i don't know how to spell guarantee...and so, without much further adieu, here is chapter 15!

Chapter 15

The next few days had been tense. Nothing new was added to the list of soap opera updates, but all three women felt an emotional pressure building up. It was almost impossible for any of them to broach the subject now, for fear it would explode in their faces as one big emotional-bomb. Buffy herself, while not a star-crossed depressor, was the referee between the two colliding forces of Willow and Tara. She liked Tara; she was never rude to her, appreciated her input and opinions, and completed all her work. She loved Willow, as any true friend can. She was pinned between the two. She had become a translator of Willowish and Taran. It was insane, but slightly more entertaining than the latest computer games.

What she had seen though, in each woman, clued her into a possibility that was too awesome to pass up. If indeed it was true, well, none would be the better catalyst than herself, would they? She just had to wait for the right moment. That was all she needed. One instant in which she had all the power played to her and Buffy could twist their fates into what she believed by now should have already occurred.

That moment had arrived late one working afternoon. The temperatures had risen to a hot and humid day. Fans were echoing throughout the WAMK building and the general dress code became ‘I-don’t-care-how-little-you-wear-as-long-as-you-don’t-show-me’. Willow however, had managed to keep herself adorned in black slacks, a white-collared blouse and black boots. She wasn’t going to let an early fall heat wave take her back to summer so quickly. And also, she looked damn good in her slacks.

The only problem was while the construction workers had moved on the beams and wires were left behind. As the construction manager had explicitly told Willow they “were to remain in her office until work around the perimeter of the foundation had been completed in case an unprecedented accident occurred on the last work-sight”. Willow had distinctly pointed out that after how long they took there shouldn’t be any possibility for ‘accidents’, but was yet again defeated and forced to coincide with the rules of the man who carried the staple gun. She was rushing about throughout the whole day. A new client had come in and was becoming the pest of the company. As usual Willow was putting in her best efforts to complete the job on time without any difficulty. But there was one problem.

Her exhaustion had started to catch up with her. The endless nights of minimal sleep, tossing, turning, and anxiety had finally started to take their toll on the redhead. She was restless, fidgeting around her office filling out forms and signing the latest contracts while at the same time fighting the ever present want to sleep. She go could from wired to tired in zero seconds. So she decided to take things into her own hands, perhaps have a little help from the modern miracle of science…

When Buffy had walked in for her normal 11 o’clock chat time with her boss on Thursday morning, (that is, right after her 10 o’clock and 9 o’clock chat) she found instead of her friend a strange bee buzzing about the room in a frenzy to put away even more papers in any place she could find.

“Yo, Willow. I think it’s time to take a break now?” Buffy said what she thought had been the billionth time this week. When Willow didn’t respond choosing to instead continue whispering to herself filing away everything she could get her grasp on, including her banana peal which Buffy had to pry away from her, Buffy decided that this had to end soon. Before the redhead became a casualty of heat and her own insanity.

“Hey, Willow? Slow down, okay? Calm down…come here, and breathe for me,” Buffy said slowly grabbing her pulling her towards her desk to sit. Buffy pulled out the chair and simultaneously began to fan Willow on the face.

“Okay, I’m going to tell you what I’m going to do, okay?” Willow didn’t seem to really be there. It was as if talking to a five year old.

“I’m going to call the nice taxi man, and I’m going to get you a ride home, okay?” Buffy said as slowly as possible.

“Don’t need one. I’m fine. Not sick anymore!” Willow slurred.

“Sick? Oh, you mean you were sick and now feel better? Well, that’s what happens when you sit down, after like 50 hours of working.” Buffy said logically.

“NO. Silly Buffy, I took some ‘ah these,” Willow said pointing at the bottle lying sideways on her desk. It read in bold letters VALIUM. When Buffy saw the label her eyes widened.

“Will, how many did you take?” When Willow didn’t respond she grabbed her and shook her slightly. “How many did you take?”

“Gees, Buffy, I didn’t take that many,” Willow said shaking her off, “I only took two, which is what my doctor prescribed to me if I ever felt anxiety or was really upset. It kinda backfired though, I feel really good now, but also really tired,” Willow said goofily.

“Okiedokie, it’s time for you to go home!”

“What? Buffy, get out of here, go on, leave, before I fire you! Hahahhaa….” Willow was starting to chuckle hardily leaning on her desk head down.

At that moment in time Willow’s own personal assistant had come to report the latest about the new client. Buffy looked up almost grateful that Tara had now come in; perhaps she could help the situation. But when she saw the distraught and upset look in her eyes, she knew it had just become worse.

“Buffy, what’s wrong with Willow?” Buffy scrambled back out beneath the beam and over the two wires to Tara, trying to make it seem as though nothing was wrong.

“Oh her? Oh she’s just playing a game with me. She’s such the little drama queen sometimes, right now she’s pretending to be a little kid,” Buffy said nervously.

“Silly Buffy!” Willow said laughing with a post-it stuck to her forehead. When she saw Tara she became a little more serious, but still was giggling.

“YES! Silly Buffy that’s me! See, she and I have made up names to go along with the game. She’s Wacky Willow and I’m Silly Buffy,” She said ripping off the post-it to Willow’s discomfort then turning to Tara once again.

“Buffy, what’s wrong with her?” Tara said trying to get to the point as soon as possible.

“Well…she had a little accident with a valium pill…or two,” Buffy said delicately.

“She’s drugged?!” Tara said completely worried.

“No, well, yes, she is, but she was only trying to calm herself down. You know how she’s been working, Tara, she’s just overwhelmed, I think this was her ‘solution’ instead of taking time off.”

Willow’s “solution” had led the redhead to stare blankly at the four walls of her office. They were big walls. Very big walls. Did Buffy know how many different kinds of holes there were in one brick? So far she had counted 247. That was a lot of holes. Were there animals that drilled these holes like in sea rocks? Or was it some strange person who wanted Willow to think there were animals that lived in bricks?

“Okay, well what are we going to do?” Tara asked urgently.

“Well, I was thinking of calling a taxi for her, but I dare not leave her alone in her house with pointy objects, and I also have a lot of work to…” Buffy stopped for a sec. A plan was forming, an idea had sprung, and Tara had been left waiting for an answer.

“What? What is it Buffy?”

“Well, I was just thinking, maybe you could, you know, take her home in your car? You’ve been there yourself; you could just look after her. I mean, you are her personal assistant, and you wouldn’t have anything further to do if she’s out. It would work out perfectly, that is if you’re willing,” Buffy said with a hopeful look at Tara.

“Y-y-yes, I guess I could do that.” Would Willow want her intruding like this? What if she woke up seeing Tara completely thrown, scared, and getting the wrong idea. She'd be nothing more than a common kidnapper. She'd be a Willownapper.

“And besides, Willow would need some one to help her in her time of need, like what she did for you?” Buffy said trying to push the final buttons in Tara. It seemed to work because a new look had come into Tara’s eyes, a protective and strong look that was all business. The first one that she caught a glimpse of was more of pity and longing combined with fear, now it had changed into a fierce and caring glow.

“You’re right, I’ll take her home,” Tara said exhaling. Willow, however high she might have been, had heard the last line. She may have been medically stoned, but she still remembered her fear of being around Tara, and how she felt for the girl.

“NO! I don’t wanna leave! I want to stay here, it’s safe here!” Willow said clutching the corners of her desk.

“We should probably get her out before the whole office starts to notice the, uh, ‘change’ in Willow,” Buffy said tying to move things along. But Willow had heard that as well, this might mean she would seriously have to go home with *gulp* Tara. When Buffy started to move towards her, she shot straight up about to yell yet another strong command, when she hit her head point blank on the wooden beam overhead. She sat immediately back down stupefied and stunned.

“WILLOW!” Tara and Buffy yelled in unison.

Willow didn’t respond. She felt dizzy. More so than when the Valium kicked in. And this wasn’t a good dizzy; this was oh-that’s-so-painful-I-can’t-even-feel-it-dizzy.

The two women climbed over the wires and pulled Willow out one arm in each hand.

“I’ll hold fort here, Tara, you take her home. Are you sure you can manage?” Buffy asked breathlessly.

“Yes, I’ll be fine, it’s Willow I’m worried about,” Tara said scared to death looking over at her tired, weak and now bruised Willow. Her Willow.

Tara and Buffy had managed to walk Willow out of the offices without too many questions arising among the workers, and safely made it to Tara’s car wherein they placed the redhead comfortably next to the driver’s seat. She drove off in a hurry towards Willow’s apartment. Buffy had walked back slowly to her desk, thinking about all that had occurred barely minutes ago.

On the positive note, this was going better than she could have planned. But on the other hand, Willow might have a concussion. It was probably best not to get her hopes up, yet. Getting these two together took one almost mortally wounded and the other scared out of her mind. If she had been this difficult to set up, she’d be a spinster her whole life.

Nice update...cracked me up, especially this line;

"Willow had distinctly pointed out that after how long they took there shouldn’t be any possibility for ‘accidents’, but was yet again defeated and forced to coincide with the rules of the man who carried the staple gun."

hehheh...reminds me of my dad who would playfully shoot staples at me whenever we'd build something.

I loved the update. It was really funny in a quirky, valium induced kind of way. Those girls are really too darned shy and insecure. It's like they need a mack truck to hit them or something. I do hope smoochies are on the horizon soon, it'd be nice if they kissed before turning 65.:)

I seriously wonder if the valium caused Willow's change all the much. Exhaustion will do that to you just fine, no medication needed for strange behaviour :) . If anything valium would make Willow express her worries more easily... which is scary for Willow.

Lots of stuff to laugh at, counting the holes in the wall/rock and wondering how they got there. Yeah, that IS something Willow would do, good fun. The hitting your head on a support beam is not so good, hopefully that's just a minor bump. Willow needs her sleep, won't do to wake her up every 4 hours or so just to check... nah.

Trust Tara to take care of Willow, that will work out just fine. Willow does need more then a single day+evening rest though. At least a couple of DAYS of not going to work, might be kinda hard to convince her of that. (you could inform her that you CAN drop dead from lack of sleep)... bit worried about Willow here, yep...

ah! Hello all! do you know that the muffin man is getting evicked soon? ah and i sooo wanted a chocolate chip one today too.....and that was out of nowhere....pay no attention to the wierdo behind the computer-curtain! hmmm.....i've been slow with the updateyness, well slow meaning every other day, not every day. and well, that's just wrong, isn't it? Well, i'll post two chapters, both a goodly-length, only i warn you: read at your own expense! This is an "evil" update in alot of ways....cause well, you'll see. i'm kinda kicking myself for the delay i'm giving you guys. but i promise: SOON! soon i say....perhaps in the next 48 hours, if you beg me that much, and won't throw cabbage at my pate. thanks for reading!

bluewillowwitch-sweet am i? well you're a strong person to be the non-irresponsible one, you go with your bad bad self! i give you all the support i can muster, and let me tell you, i'm musty! hmmm....wait...not in that way! i'm glad you're liking this fic! that's coolio......and i am updating as we speak! so you are non-threatened by my fruit attacks? well, then, you, missy, have not seen my impersonation of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee with banana num-chucks.... fear me => :banana

The Rose24-I am also really worried about Willow too...in fact i worry more than she does! I think Tara should knock some sense into her, dontcha thing? OOOooo the two alloping? good idea...only i'm not sure if it would work. it seems everyone knows except them.....alloping would necessitate them to know, and nobody else to.

the vamp nurd-hmm...i'm finding a pattern here, i respond with some insane response and then you quote it to just show to everyone who reads it that i am in fact that insane, is this true? is this being quoted at this very instant? cause that's just crazy. *waves at viewers* HI NON-EXISTANT-MOM! and yes, willow hopped up on V is something i thought up because the image was too funny to me. i'm cruel like that.

sam darls-yeah, willow on valium.....i'm sorry, but it makes me laugh, in a sort of *cough* serious *cough* sort of way. and yes, its a good thing that Tara is there.

envisioned-ahah! hello! and goodnight or day to yah!!!:bigwave you just started reading YESTERDAY? WOW! you read FAST! okay, anyone who reads fic that fast, and it turns out to be MY fic is cool in my book. i already like you dude, so i hope you keep reading!

snuggle79-HIY---wait...badgirl? i'm a badgirl now? hmmm i think i actually like that, and hahahha i'm listening to an old song: "if you want it to be good girl, get yourself a badgirl" ....hmmmm my, my, such wonderful timing on your part! ah! you caught the post-it? fab! i did that once, on accident....needless to say the idea has 'stuck' with me for a while....ha ha...i made a pun! and let's see, no worries now because: *leans in to whisper* "it's here, dude...."

justin-ah! you like my image of willow buzzyness! fab! cause i started laughing when i thought it up. and then my parents stared at me with a look of utter worry. note: never laugh after some says someone died, you just can't come out in a positive way. hmmm...safe in bed? good call on your part! *snicker*

BloodSuckinFiend-Oh i'm so happy people are picking up on my quirky humor! oh-so-happy-am-i! the staple gun was fun to write, i must admit. Ooo your father shot staples at you? *sniff* ah memories....Oh dear, it was too small? well that just sucks.....like a duck....because you see, ducks don't have teeth? ah i have to explain my humor...how sad. *salutes* i will try to keep up the good work, mir....sa'am..(instead of sir or ma'am)

bla bla bla-ah i've been found by you! whoo to that mate. thank you, i'm glad you like it, it's always appreciated to have new readers. Ah! i've changed your mind abou AU's?? *does a little dance* WHOOOOO! i've changed someone's opinion! whoo. hmmmm you no like dawn? it's funny....there are those that are fans....and those that aren't. i'm the switzerland in this W.W.III (Willow War Three) meaning me be neutral; neither or either.....and yes! i do update...its a bad habbit, i know. oh you're so sweet; i'm glad you like willow drugged, it's good to know responses to certain scenarios for future stories.

Tempest Duer-Oh, i'm sorry, i'll stop hitting your home. in fact, i'll change my target to my home. cause in fact, this sort of thing happened to me in the opposite reaction. i was on a plane with my family, and my mom knew i was freakin' cause of anxiety (partly planes, partly depression) so she offered me a valium. it was actually funny now that i remember it:

mom:"take the valium, you'll feel better!" me:"I said NO!" I think at that point, the rest of the passengers decided silently if there was a crash, they'd feed us first to the sharks....ah, yes, Willow's high...it's so much fun to write....i must admit, i gave into the temptation to do that to her.

foreverpiper-oh whoo to that! i made you lyao...YES! i hope it can get better, i'm hoping you'll like this update....meaning it will be better in a romantic sensey....ah people say that they understand hitting their heads...i have a feeling i just must attract clumsy people to my clumsy fic. how fab. *snicker* the walmart doors? i've done that too often, only in Macy's and the alarm went off and i was caught with a bag of my mom's newly bought shoes, and all the fashionable people glared at me.....it was sad, but funny, i'll warrant.

nika-i'm happy you like my valium-induced-quirky udates. this makes it so much easier to update now. So, every update will have a drug to go along with it. Image it: "Tylonel Tara!" oh the possibilities....and yes, the smoochy dilemma; i promise in like some time after this time....meaning the future, it will happen....

singgirl-oh you have the flu? well, then, to help speed your recovery, i'm posting these TWO chapters for YOU! therefore, everyone should thank you for them! Err....but if they don't like it...well i'll let them blame you all the same! *smiles nervously* FEEL BETTER! i'll send a dove out to you. although, she does get lost, *shakes fist at indifferent dove* ah i'll just stick with my own saluds here. so salud dude!

Grimlock72-Hmmmm Willow i think just needed one way to let go of all her anxiety and thust the V did it. therefore, in effect, it was there in her all along. just needed that push. true, willow would be scared by expressing everything so openly. oh i'm happy i made you laugh....that's always a plus to me that i'm doing it right! and yes, Willow needs to rest! i agree! and hey, man, you've got it again exactly! (the how much she should rest bit, that is) and yes, i am extremely worried i'm killing my own fav. character. ah well, she'll be fine, i promise!

NOTE: (yes, again, there is a note, NONE OF THAT WHINING! i can heeeeaaaarrrr you....so don't do it. HEY YOU! You in the BACK! i said NO!

okay, now that we've got that cleared up, just wanna make it clear: this is my fav. part, only because this is like my dream "date" only, it ends in a not-so-datey-fashion, so uhh....remember i have fruit, and i know how to use it, so no attacking the messenger....(and writer of the message) hmmm.....okay you can attack me...i guess i deserve it. being lucifer's daughter, and the 'badgirl' i guess i should expect it. *snicker*

Chapter 16

Buffy had received a call from Tara a few hours later. She had repeated all that had happened once they had arrived at Willow’s flat. They managed to get in without too much of a hassle, although Tara had to almost pry Willow away from the lit up stain glass window.

“So, you’re in the house now?” Buffy asked recapping.

“Yes.” Tara said, nervously looking around. The last time she was in here she was torn between going back to her abusive family and staying with Willow for breakfast. It seemed so long since she had last sat on the couch, watching the redhead sleep lazily on the chair before her. Tara shook her thoughts out. She had to think on the present problem at hand.

“But, she’s still kinda woozy, I gave her some water and told her to get into her pajamas.”

“Good. That way she can go to sleep anytime she wants,” Buffy said sighing.

“Yeah, I checked the bump on her head, it is a large one, and it left a scratch across her temple down to the bridge of her eye, but she’s conscious, and non-concussiony,” Tara reported back.

“Well, that’s a relief, I was worried I’d have to find another job,” Buffy attempted at humor. Tara smiled weakly on the other side of the phone. She had become silent and started to wonder how it had come to this. She should have prevented Willow from ever working like this; it had nearly destroyed her.

“Buffy, I’m…I don’t want to pry into Willow’s own life, but she’s…I’m just so worried about her,” Tara said quietly crying.

“I know, Tara, believe me, I know. I’ve been trying to talk to her about it for the longest time, but trust me, the best thing you can do is look after her right now,” Buffy said reassuringly.

“I know, and I’ll stay here until she’s got the strength to throw me out, but I’m—I’m not going to let her get away with this self-destruction. It’s got to stop. I-I-I feel like I’m partly to blame too. I don’t know why, but I feel like she’s been avoiding me,” Tara said fading away. “Damn,” Buffy thought, “this girl is smarter than she already looks.”

“NO! I mean, uh, no, she’s not avoiding you Tara, she’s just going through a tough time,” Buffy tried to explain.

“How so? Is this the reason why she’s acting so weird?”

“Well, uh, yes and no. She’s mainly just a workaholic, but she also has uh, she just uh, well that is to say she, uh,” Buffy was faltering by the second. “See there’s this person whom she’s kinda, uh, well, it’s hard to explain…”

“Buffy, does she have feelings for some one at work? Some one that doesn’t for her?” Tara said slowly, the pain etching across her face.

“Uh, it’s not my place to sa--”

“Does she or does she not?! Yes or no?!” Tara said again. She wanted to hear the truth. It didn’t matter if it was going to tear her apart. She deserved the truth.

“Yes,” Buffy said wondering how she was going to word the next answer.

“Who?” Tara asked impatiently. She’d make them pay. Whoever was dumb enough not to see that Willow loved them should be thrown out into the street and shot. By cannon.

“I, uh, I don’t really know. It’s some person where you work,” Buffy lied.

“So this is why she’s avoiding the open offices and working insane hours?”

“Y-yes. But with all do respect to Willow and her uh, problem, she wasn’t looking to be hit so hard with cupids arrow, I mean, she’s not enjoying the situation either,” Buffy tried to recover. Tara was worse than Willow when it came to getting answers out of her. It felt as if Buffy was being put through the Tarish Inquisition.

“I don’t care. She doesn’t deserve to hurt herself over some clueless person,” Tara snapped. “Some clueless person like yourself, perhaps?” Buffy thought.

“I know, I know, look, if she’s up to it, tomorrow I’ll swing by and talk to her, you okay with taking care of her tonight?” Buffy asked.

“Yes, I’ll be fine. I just wish… I just want her to feel better,” Tara said looking forlorn towards the hallway that led to Willow’s bedroom.

“You and me both,” Buffy said exhaling.

The two said their goodbyes and began to hang up, when Buffy yelled back, “Oh wait! Tara?”

“Yes?”

“If you can, get Chinese take out? She’s not picky about what she eats, she just really loves the fortune cookies,” Buffy said with a smile.

“I can do that.” Tara said almost smiling and with that they hung up.

Chapter 17

The evening had been most of a success with Willow and Tara. She had ordered the Chinese, and Willow was comfortably napping on her bed in her dark red flannel pajamas. Tara had almost wished that Willow could have needed her care more often. If getting to take her home and watching her sleep was part of the deal, she would take it.

When the Chinese had come and Tara paid out of her own pocket, she went to go find Willow after setting the food down. She walked briskly into the bedroom, hoping to sneak up on the redhead. But instead, found the woman standing up on her own looking out the window. The sound of Tara’s footsteps alerted the redhead and so she turned around to face the newcomer.

“Hi,” Willow slurred out.

“Hey Willow, how are you doing?” Tara said moving a little closer.

“Oh, I’m doing much better thank you. I still feel a bit woozy,” Willow started to giggle like a little kid, and then explained further, “Woozy…”

Tara realized the Valium hadn’t yet worn off. Well, kid Willow or not, she was still Willow, and she was here with her in her bedroom waiting to have dinner with her. This could be considered a date, right? “I have to have the person drugged first and dragged into the place…” Tara thought wryly.

“Willow? I got you some food, do you like Chinese?”

“Are there fortune cookies?” Came the perky reply.

“Yes, I made sure to get them on special order. Lots of fortunes to be had, if you’ll come with me that is,” Tara said entreating Willow to follow her. Willow complied and sat down with Tara at the spacious kitchen counter. They ate in silence. Neither knew what to say, especially since one kept finding the tiles such an amazing addition to mankind.

With the falling of the night the two slipped onto the couch to watch whatever movie they could find. Willow had nabbed all the cookies spilling them onto her criss-crossed lap like a pirate with its newly stolen booty. She picked each one up breaking them apart systematically slowly reading each fortune. She then placed the similar fortunes into their own separate piles counting them exactly. Whichever pile had the least amount would be the one most likely to occur; the rarest fortunes were the most valuable in her mind. Throughout the whole process Tara had watched in amazement slowly eating her one fortune cookie.

Willow held each one up to Tara and told her what they said in order, by pile.

“You can experience a change for the better in job status in the near future, pfft, I doubt that,” Willow said all-knowingly. She held up another.

“You will be unusually successful in business. Duh!” Willow scoffed. Tara giggled at the redhead’s comment. Well, at least she felt confident about her work.

“You will always be surrounded by true friends,” With that Willow looked at Tara directly, without saying a word. She looked jugdemental, but caring at the brownish-blond, as if figuring out a hard equation with so simple an answer. Deciding inwardly what the answer was, she went directly back to her fortunes, all-business once again.

“This is the year when ingenuity stands high on the list,” Willow frowned. Right now her brain could not comprehend the word ingenuity. She didn’t care though, if anything the fortunes were good this year. And after counting the amounts in each pile, it came to “You can experience a change for the better in job status in the near future” as the least repetitive. Tara looked on impressed with the process of elimination the redhead so diligently used.

“So do we have a winner?” Tara asked.

“Yes, although I’m a little disappointed; the last time it came to “great success will come your way” and that was the night before I figured out my own computer program. I was hoping for something more this time, but I guess you can’t win always,” Willow said acceptingly. Tara smiled. She saw the brilliant imagination that illuminated the girl when she talked about her life, or at least the moments when she was happy. Willow slowly shuffled together the fortunes when Tara had perked up a bit.

“Hey, Willow, does mine count?” She asked handing hers to Willow.

“Have you read it already? You’re supposed to eat the cookie first to make it come true or else it’s a dud. But if you haven’t, the fortune’s still good and you can still let it be fortuney,” Willow said decisively. The rules of Fortune Cookies were very strict. She had abided by them since she was seven, when her father had shown her their magic. And she had practiced in his stead ever since; if you did not go by the rules, you might loose a good fortune.

“I haven’t read it yet, I thought I’d save it for you,” Tara said handing the single white strip to Willow. Willow’s eyes brightened. Here was another mystery waiting to be revealed. When she had read all hers already, a new, and even more curious one came up. The one small paper seemed to become so powerful and precious at the same time. Willow drew in her breath--this was a moment worth savoring—and read as quickly as possible.

Tara couldn’t stand the silence or waiting for Willow’s response. “W-w-what does it say?”

“I don’t know, it’s in Chinese,” Willow said disappointed.

“Oh, well here, let me see,” Tara grabbed it and flipped it over to expose the English on the other side. She read it and it made her heart skip. “Your love does love you”.

“Did you find it?” Willow asked impatient.

“Oh, uh, no it seems that this one was only printed in Chinese,” Tara lied.

“Oh,” Willow said disappointed. “Well that’s too bad cause that one would have won the pile. I didn’t recognize any of the symbols on that one for the others; it would have won.”

“Yeah, too bad,” Tara said with a weak smile.

“I wonder what it says?” Willow asked positively curious, she was already thinking of joining a ‘Let’s Learn Chinese!’ course to find out what it meant. Perhaps the Internet could supply the answer? Nah, she’d need to have the symbols on her keyboard to translate.

“I don’t know, but I guess we’ll see when it happens,” Tara said hopefully and brightly. She stretched and stood up, Willow yawned. “I guess I should get going, huh? And you definitely need some sleep.”

“Tara? C-c-can you stay here?” Willow asked like a small child.

“Uh…” Tara was caught between Willow’s sweet words and her own dilemma. “You’re overstepping bounds, overstepping bounds, overstepping bounds, you’re really, really, not supposed to take pleasure in this,” Tara thought cursing herself for her weakness.

“S-s-sure, I can stay, I’ll crash on the couch again?” Tara asked. Willow nodded her head, although it seemed to Tara that a flash of disappointment had passed over Willow’s face at the mention of the couch for her sleeping quarters.

“Great! You’ll stay here until the morning?” Willow asked in a higher tone.

“Yes, yes, I’ll stay. But you have to let me take a look at that scratch before you go to sleep okay?” Tara asked eying the mark. Willow grimaced, ‘looking at’ not only meant discriminating looks of ‘why did you play with that knife?’ but also a bottle of ‘let’s sting the patient’. However, when Tara led her to the bathroom she was quite pleasantly surprised. Tara’s hands caressed her forehead, slowly and mechanically checking for serious injuries. Willow had closed her eyes throughout the whole process; it was as relaxing as any masseuse had been to her without the whole frightening issue of nudity. This was a lot better. In fact, she would have to make a note of calling Tara for hire as her personal masseuse.

Tara wasn’t far behind in the pleasure factor as well. She was relishing in being able to calm Willow down so quickly, she was like putty in her hands. Tara had to admit she was gaining a little too much satisfaction from ‘examining’ Willow. This was just too good to pass up though. Who wouldn’t?

When Tara realized that it had gone on for long enough she slowly pulled her fingers away rubbing softly the temples down to Willow’s chin.

“Mmm….” Willow hummed. She was already half asleep. She needed to get this girl to stay at her flat more often. When she opened her eyes, Tara seemed just as transfixed on Willow as she was on her. The two stared quietly, hoping the other wouldn’t notice. Eyes locked and Willow slowly lifted up her hand towards Tara’s face.

She just barely caressed Tara’s cheek, studying her jaw-line with her eyes. Tara stood stock-still. Whatever this led to, she didn’t care. She was going to let Willow do whatever she pleased; her heart was in her hands if she wanted it. Willow continued to look at the brownish-blond like a work of art, admiring every shadow, every curve and every contour of her face. Her hand barely touched the skin, but where it did, the soft down hairs rose up on contact causing Tara to feel the flush start up.

“You have blue eyes,” Willow said slowly. Tara said nothing. Willow leant in slowly, ever so slowly. As if caught in time, she teetered between the seesaw of possibility and reality, nevering disconnecting the strong eye contact. Tara stayed still, like a deer caught in the headlights.

As if almost shooting out of a trance, Willow said quickly and childlike, “I have to go to bed now, bye Tara.” The redhead shuffled by the stunned girl, causing her to wonder what had happened. One moment Willow was looking at her like she was something, but the next moment she was gone. She really believed it that time. She actually was foolish enough to think it was true. Something had happened to stop her though. “Me,” Tara thought sadly.

That night had almost fooled her. It had almost caught her off guard, again. She would not let her mind wander so; Willow loved someone at work. But it wasn’t her. She just had to deal with that. But how? This was going to get to the point where it was painful to see Willow. She needed to talk to someone. But the only someone she had ever talked to about her personal issues was Willow. And now, she had even lost that.

Tara’s head spun with her thoughts. She headed back out to the table covered with the fortunes and pulled out hers. She read it again and again, hoping it to come true that instant. But Willow’s door stayed closed and Tara was still alone in the living room in front of a grotesque pile of Chinese Fortune Cookies. She cleared the pile, throwing them away in the nearest trashcan. Tara pulled the chenille blanket over her clothed body and went into a restless sleep. She failed to realize her fortune was still clasped in her hand.
