Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Buffy's intention to get a new job.

Nice to see Willow re-learning magic with Tara's guidance.

The end of this chapter though has me all curious. How come Buffy attacked one of the crystal guys? She couldn't tell him apart from the teen vamps? Most intriguing.

Balance Point update - Buffy's interview

Postby chronic » Wed Oct 02, 2002 8:13 am

“Every night this week I’ve seen them” Buffy said. “And every time we meet, they pretend I’m not there.” She sat down heavily at the kitchen table, agitated.

“Well, they did say they were here to fight vampires” Willow replied, trying to console her friend. “So obviously they’re going to patrol a lot. And you did kinda almost stake one of them.”

“I thought he was a vampire!” Buffy exclaimed. “They had these kids surrounded.”

“Vampire kids” Willow said quietly. As Buffy glared at her, she tried to explain herself. “What I mean is, usually you can tell when someone’s a vampire.”

“Yeah, but when you see some frightened kids being threatened, you assume the scared ones are the humans, and the scary ones are the vamps.”

“Maybe they’re not ignoring you” Tara suggested. “Maybe they’re just doing their job, and too busy to acknowledge you.”

“Oh trust me, they’re ignoring me. And this is my town! I should be ignoring them!” Willow and Tara both looked at her. “Ignoring them in a keeping my eye on them kind of way.”

“Hey, look at the time” Tara said, looking at the clock. “Shouldn’t Dawn be ready for school by now?”

“Dawn!” Buffy yelled. Willow and Tara both covered their ears.

“Ok, ok!” Dawn yelled back from upstairs.

“I wondered how long her enthusiasm for school would last” Buffy said. “Three days, gotta be a record.”

“So, you ready for your interview?” Willow asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be” Buffy told her.

“I could meet you afterwards?” Tara offered. “We could go somewhere for lunch, to celebrate.”

“Optimism, I like that” Buffy said, smiling.

“Or commiserate” Tara conceded.

“Hey, I’m staying positive. This is my chance to get out of burger hell.” She turned to Willow. “What about you, Will? Gonna come and either welcome me back to the real world, or console me when I burst in to tears at the sight of anything with a gherkin in?”

“Sorry, I’ve got class all day” Willow said. But we’ll do something tonight.”

“Ok.” Buffy looked at the clock again. “Dawn! C’mon!”

                ********************

“Good luck!” Willow and Tara said together as they waved to Buffy. Then they turned and carried on their way to college.

“Do you think she’ll do ok? Willow asked.

“I hope so. I think she needs to do something she enjoys, otherwise the slaying will just get too much again.” Tara shuddered. “I mean, having a dangerous life thrust upon you because its your destiny must be pretty harsh, but having to flip burgers at the same time…”

They walked on in silence for a while, then Willow asked “So, what’cha gonna do today?”

“Hmm, the house is all empty. Think I might go for a walk.”

As they reached the university, Willow turned and took both of Tara’s hands in hers. “Have a good time” she said, leaning in for a kiss.

“You too sweetie” Tara said, giving a small wave as Willow turned and headed for the main building. She watched her lover walk away for a moment, a small smile on her lips, then she turned and headed back out of the campus.

                ********************

“I’m here for a job interview” Buffy told the receptionist, a teenaged girl who gestured vaguely at some seats, then went back to her important tasks of chewing gum and filing her nails. Buffy walked over to the seats and sat down.

A few minutes later, a woman walked up to the desk. She glanced down at a piece of paper, then looked up. “Buffy Summers?”

Buffy leapt to her feet. “That’s me.”

The woman smiled and offered her hand. “Rachel Hudson. I’m the manager of Sunnydale gym.”

They shook hands, then Ms Hudson led Buffy through the main gym area. “We have all the usual machines and facilities” she said, gesturing around the large room. She pointed at some corridors leading off from the main area. “We also have several halls, which we use as indoor courts, and for the various classes we teach here.” They turned down one of the corridors then through a side door in to an office. Ms Hudson gestured at a chair in the middle of the room, then joined the other two occupants of the room sitting behind the large desk. “This is Mr Johnson” she said, indicating the large man to her right, “and this is Mrs Lewis.” She indicated the athletically built woman on her left.

Buffy gingerly sat down, then stared at the three interviewers like they were the inquisition. She realised her fingers were digging in to the arm rests, and forced herself to release her grip.

“Now then, Ms Summers” Ms Hudson said, pushing her glasses up her nose. “The job would initially be three nights a week, teaching self defence classes. If all goes well, your duties at the gym would then be increased to make the job full time, coaching other sports, fitness training, and so on. Do you see any problems with that arrangement?”

“Oh, no, not at all” Buffy said quickly. She wiped a bead of sweat from her brow, then resumed her tight grip on the arms of the chair. I’ve faced down demons, hell gods, even Snyder she thought. This shouldn’t make me this nervous. She looked up at the interview panel, and three pairs of eyes stared back at her.

“So” Mrs Lewis said. “Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?”

                ********************

Tara walked through the park, enjoying the sun on her face. Her mind went back to the conversation she had had with Willow here a week ago. She hadn’t realised how much her Willow kept bottled up. Still, everything had been let out in the open, and the slight tension that had grown between them was gone.

She was walking alongside a stream, listening to the sound the water made over the pebbles, when she saw something that made her grin. A wooden bridge spanned the stream. She stepped on to it, remembering the song she had sung to Willow here, and a red glow rose in her cheeks. She couldn’t imagine herself ever singing in public, not unless the dancing demon turned up again, but still, she had meant every word.

“I’m under your spell…” she sang softly under her breath. The words had once held a sinister double meaning, but now she felt free to sing them again.

“Oh, um, hi” a voice interrupted her thoughts.

Tara turned to see an Asian girl standing next to her. One of the Order members, she remembered. She had thought it odd at the time that someone so young had been included in the meeting. But then again, Dawn had been there too.

“You’re, um, one of the Slayer’s friends, right?” she asked.

“Yes, Tara” she said with a smile. “And you’re Omiko, one of the order of, well, order.”

The girl smiled. “I’m told there was a time when we actually called ourselves that, but it always used to confuse people, or make them laugh. Now its just ‘the Order’.” She looked down, shyly. “And, um, you can call me Omi. If you want.”

“So, um, what are you up to?” Tara asked.

“Oh, just out for a walk. Y’know, new town to see. Plus everyone else is asleep or training. Then I saw you and I thought, well, that I’d come and say hi.” She gave a nervous grin, then turned and rested her arms on the bridge railing.

Tara looked sidelong at the girl. It could be a complete coincidence, their meeting here. But Omi was a member of an organisation she knew nothing about. For all she knew, she was there to see what information she could get about the Slayer. Still, she didn’t want to appear unfriendly. And maybe I can find some stuff about them. “Your necklace” she said. Omi turned, and her hand went to the piece of jewellery. Then she unfastened it and offered it to Tara.

Tara studied the pendent on its chain. It was a stylised eye, the edge of the eye in silver, the iris formed by a small blue crystal. “Its pretty” she said. Omi smiled. “You all wear necklaces” Tara continued. “The pendent denotes your role, yes?” Omi nodded. “Soldiers wear a sword, wizards a lightning bolt and scholars have a book.” She handed Omi’s necklace back to her. “Mike never told us what your role is.”

“I’m a seer” Omi told her, fastening the chain around her neck.

“You see visions of the future?” Tara asked, intrigued.

“Um, something like that. Anyway, I don’t want to intrude.” The girl began backing away. “I’m sure I’ll see you again. Bye!” She waved, then turned and walked off.

Tara stared at her retreating back, a little surprised by her rapid departure. Then she turned and continued on her way

                ********************

“And you have no criminal convictions?” Ms Hudson asked. Buffy shook her head. Despite the many times slaying had caused her problems with the authorities, she had always managed to avoid being arrested. Well, being charged, anyway.

“Well, that was the last of the questions, if no one has any others?” the manager asked.

Buffy visibly relaxed, leaning back in to the chair. Oh god, I’m still alive. she thought. And I answered all their questions, there shouldn’t be any problems.

Mr Johnson spoke up. “I’m concerned by your lack of qualifications.”

Well, there is that. Buffy thought, her heart sinking.

“Mr Johnson teaches our current self defence course, as well as several martial arts classes” Ms Hudson said.

As Johnson leaned back, his biceps and pectoral muscles shifted under his T-shirt. Buffy could almost swear the movement was deliberate, to show off his physique. “You don’t have any qualifications in martial arts or athletics, and no experience of teaching.” His voice assumed a slightly smug tone. “And frankly, you look like you’d have trouble defending yourself, let alone teaching others to.”

Buffy’s eyes narrowed. The man had been confrontational throughout the interview, his tone either aggressive or sarcastic. “I assure you, I can take care of myself” she said coldly.

“Excuse us” Ms Hudson said, then began a whispered conference with the other two. She listened hard, and her Slayer hearing picked up the occasional phrase.

“The demand for our self defence course has tripled over the last year, I’ve no idea why…

“She’s the best candidate by far, not that we’ve had many…

“Look at her, what’s she gonna do in a fight, threaten to tell her mommy?”

They finished whispering. “Did you bring suitable clothes for a workout?” Ms Hudson asked. “Good” she said as Buffy nodded. “Perhaps you could give us a demonstration of what you’re capable of.”

“With pleasure” Buffy said, glaring at Johnson. She hurried to the changing rooms, changed her clothes, then met Ms Hudson and Mrs Lewis in one of the halls off the main gym. There was no sign of Johnson.

As the two women moved to the edge of the floor, Buffy began one of her usual warm up routines, then performed several handstands, back-flips and summersaults. Then she moved in to a more aggressive routine, aiming punches and kicks at an imaginary opponent. She finished, and as she caught her breath she was pleased to see impressed looks on the women’s faces. Then she heard the clapping.

Johnson stood in the doorway, now dressed in workout clothes. He finished his mocking applause. “Very pretty” he said. “You’d make a good dancer. Or maybe you could be a stunt double for one of those girls in those action shows, lots of play fighting.”

“I don’t play” Buffy said confidently. She could see what was coming next, and Johnson didn’t disappoint her.

“Lets see how you do against a real opponent” he challenged, moving to a crash mat covered area at the far end of the hall. As Buffy followed he continued. “Now, I’ll be the attacker, and you can be the helpless victim.” He smirked at her. “You shouldn’t find that too difficult.”

“I’ll do my best” the Slayer said, coming to stand opposite Johnson. He walked casually toward her, then grabbed her forearm. He grinned, expecting her to be unable to break his grip. The smile faded as Buffy rotated her arm, forcing him to let go. She blocked his next two attempts, smiling as his smug expression changed to one of frustration. Then she deliberately turned her back to him, allowing him to place his arm around her neck in a choke-hold. Gripping his forearm, she threw him over her shoulder and on to the mats.

Buffy turned as she heard applause, this time without the sarcasm. Ms Hudson and Mrs Lewis were both grinning, clearly enjoying their colleague’s defeat.

“So you want to play rough” the man said as he got to his feet. As Buffy turned back to face him, he charged…

                ********************

“And then?” Tara asked.

“I got the job!” Buffy exclaimed, grinning widely. Several of the café’s other customers looked round as her voice rose.

“I meant with Mr Johnson.”

“Oh, I kicked his ass.” When she saw Tara’s worried look, she smiled. “Its ok, I was careful not to do any permanent damage. Except to his pride, maybe.”

Tara laughed. “I wish I could have seen the look on his face.”

“You may get to if you visit me at work” Buffy said. “I don’t think his expression is gonna change any time soon.”

Tara giggled again. “So when do you start?”

“Three weeks. I’ll give my notice at the Doublemeat tomorrow.”

“Sweetie, this is so great!” Tara said, her voice high pitched with excitement.

“I know!” Buffy exclaimed, even more excited. “I get to do the one thing I know I’m good at for a living. Plus, the place is nice, and the people there seem ok.” As Tara raised an eyebrow she added: “Except one. And I don’t think he’s gonna speak to me unless he has to. And if he annoys me, I’ll just remind him off today.”

“Oh, wait till we get home” Tara said, giggling again. “Willow’s gonna love this story.”

                ********************

Willow sat giggling as Buffy finished telling her her story. “So when I’d knocked him down, like, eight times, he finally gave up and Ms Hudson offered me the job.”

“That’s great Buffy” Willow said, still trying to get her giggling under control.

“Congratulations!” Dawn shouted as she entered the room, a plate in her hands. She placed it on the coffee table to reveal a cup cake with a candle stuck on top. “This calls for a celebration.” She went over and joined Willow and Tara on the couch.

Buffy eyed the cake dubiously. “My ‘well done you got a job’ party is a cake with a candle?”

“We’ll do something later” Dawn told her. “This is all I could think of at short notice. Now blow your candle out.”

Buffy grinned, then looked over at Willow and Tara, a serious expression on her face. “Now, you two are just going to have to be brave about this.” She leaned forward and blew at the candle. The flame wavered, but did not go out.

“Oh come on, don’t you have super Slayer breath or something?” Dawn teased. Buffy took a deep breath, then finally blew the candle out.

“Guys, watch the TV” Tara suddenly interrupted.

“The teenager reported that his two friends had been missing for several days.” The newsreader’s voice now filled the silent room. He claimed he and his friends had been partying in the desert, and upon waking the next day, assumed they had made their own way home. It was several days before he realised they had never returned. The newsreader shuffled his papers. Two officers who went to investigate the scene of the disappearances have also failed to return. Sunnydale police are planning a large scale search of the entire area, and would appreciate any volunteers.

“From one job I get cakes, from the other I get this” Buffy said with a sigh. “So, what do you think?”

“There could be anything hiding out there” Willow said.

Buffy leaned forward. “So tomorrow, we go and find it.”

Ah, Buffy working in a gym, most plausible. Her anxiety about the interview was funny, but she has my sympathy too - I hate interviews! I shouldn't think Johnson took kindly to her for besting him like that, but serves him right for pre-judging her!

I think Tara is right to be wary of meeting Omiko out of the blue like that. Very suspicious.

I was wondering about Buffy working in a gym; sure she can take care of herself. Thats based on slayer-strength and slayer-speed though. Can't really see her teach those to other people :D

(ignoring the entire 'teaching' aspect of it even :) )

Good thing Tara didn't trust Omiko at that bridge, Tara tends to be to trusting at times.

Balance Point update

Postby chronic » Fri Oct 04, 2002 8:58 am

mollyig - Yep, job interviews really are hell. Just goes to show that real life can be scarier than demons and vampires. Mr Johnson really did deserve his ass-kicking, but no, he won't be taking it well :mad

Grimlock72 - True, Buffy knows how to fight, but we'll have to see if she really knows what she's let herself in for...

So just what was Omi up to? Hmm, you'll have to wait and see...

barnabasvamp - Well, a gym does seem appropriate for someone with Buffy's skills, but to be honest, anywhere would be better that the Doublemeat Palace! :puke

Glad you're enjoying this.

Now, on with the show...

**********************************************

Omi looked around the Order’s new base. One side of the empty warehouse was lined with screens, like those found in hospital wards, forming ten sleeping areas. God knows where the scholars find all this stuff. she thought. She wondered how they had managed to buy, or rent, this place so quickly. Still, the Order wasn’t short for money or resources. She walked across the cold concrete floor, giving a wide berth to the four warriors, who were sparing, practising blocking each other’s attacks. She made her way to the small office built in to a corner of the building and entered.

Mike, Saul and Marcus were seated around the desk. “Ah, Omi” Mike said, smiling at her. He gestured for her to sit down. “You met with one of the Slayer’s people?”

“Yes, Tara.”

“And?”

“She’s nice” Omi replied.

“I trust you learned more than that” Mike said, but he smiled tolerantly. .

“Tara and Willow are both witches” she said. “Anya is a demon.”

“A demon, friends with the Slayer?” Saul asked. Omi nodded.

“The Slayer’s sister, Dawn, is human, but there’s something unnatural about her, I’m not sure what” she continued. “Xander is normal, as far as Tara knows, there’s nothing exceptional about him. The three men nodded as they absorbed this information.

“Their group is very close knit” she went on. “The only dissension is between Anya and Xander, I think they were once a couple, but are no longer together. Willow and Tara are a couple…”

“You don’t need your abilities to tell that” Saul butted in. Omi glared at him, then smiled.

“Perhaps not. There was some trouble between them, but its in the past now.”

Marcus yawned, as if the discussion was boring him, then leaned forward. “Did you find out anything useful?” He asked sarcastically. “Like why the two sensitives are no longer having nightmares?”

Omi glared at him, then addressed herself to Mike. “Something Tara made, a herbal remedy.”

“Really? It must be very strong, to block out the effects of the distortion.” Saul said. “Perhaps Tara should consider marketing it” he added thoughtfully. “Still, it does explain things.”

“So they are still sensing the distortion?” Mike asked.

“Oh yes, the remedy simply counters the symptoms” the senior wizard told him. “And as the balance point approaches, those symptoms will increase.”

“So we wait” Mike said. Both wizards nodded.

                ********************

The Xandermobile pulled off the road and on to the sand. 15 minutes later, Willow called out “Um, yeah, its about here, I think.” She sat in the passenger seat, a map spread across her lap.

“You think?” Buffy asked from the back seat.

“Hello, we’re in the desert. Not many landmarks to navigate by.”

The car pulled up, and they all got out. Willow pointed at the ground. “Look, tire tracks. The kid’s van came this way.” Earlier that morning she had hacked in to police computers, and read the report on the disappearances. Three teens had come out here to get drunk and stoned, away from the interfering presence of the police. The driver had woken the next morning to find the other’s gone, and driven home, assuming they had made their own way back. When he reported them missing a few days later, two officers went out to check the area. Their car had been found on the road, but there was no sign of them.

The four of them followed the tracks until they suddenly swung round and headed back to town. “This must be where they spent the night” Tara said.

Buffy put her hand up to shield her eyes from the sun, and looked around. There was nothing but empty desert for miles around. “No sign of anything.”

“Its so… empty” Tara said. “I mean, I know it’s a desert and all, but I never realised it was so… dead.”

“What do you mean? You’ve been out here before” Buffy said.

“Huh?” Tara shook her head. “No I haven’t.”

“Oh, yeah, that was just a dream.”

Xander interrupted their conversation. “Do you think they were buried out here?” They all looked at the ground.

“There’d be no way to tell without digging” Willow said. “Its not like soil, it doesn’t get disturbed when you dig it. Its just… sand.”

“Um, Will?” Buffy said, pointing. “The undisturbed sand is moving.”

They all looked to see the sand rippling, as if something was moving beneath it. “What is it?” Tara asked.

A monstrous tentacle burst from the sand.

“Holy crap!” yelled Xander, as they all staggered back. The tentacle seemed to home in on his voice, wrapping itself around his waist, then lifting him in to the air.

“Release!” Tara cried, casting a spell. The tentacle showed no sign of letting the struggling carpenter go, and instead started to pull him towards the ground.

Buffy dived for the tentacle, wrapping her arms around it. She didn’t seem to be doing it any harm, but at least she was delaying its retreat in to the sand. “Willow, Tara, get the weapons from the car!” she shouted. As the two women ran off, Buffy reached inside her jacket and pulled out a stake, then slammed it in to the tentacle. The wooden point shattered.

Willow reached the car first, and hurriedly opened the trunk. As Tara caught up, they both pulled out the large, heavy bag. Then, holding a strap each, they ran back to Buffy and Xander.

They returned to find that Xander’s legs were now sinking in to the sand as the tentacle pulled him down. “Buffy, get it off!” he yelled.

“I’m trying!” the Slayer yelled back, trying to pry the tentacle from around Xander’s waist.

“Buffy!” Willow yelled, opening the bag and taking out an axe. She threw it to the Slayer, who caught it, then swung it at the tentacle where it emerged from the sand. The handle snapped with the impact, and the tentacle showed no sign of damage.

“What does it take to hurt this thing?” Buffy yelled, as she returned to trying to prise the tentacle’s grip around Xander. He was now up to his waist in sand. Willow and Tara rushed up to them, both holding swords. “Blades don’t hurt it” Buffy told them.

Willow knelt beside Buffy, about to join her in trying to pull away the tentacle. As she looked closely, she saw the hexagonal scales covering the limb. An idea struck her, and she grabbed her sword, then placed the sword tip in the join between two scales. She pushed down with all her strength, and the sword sunk in to the creature. Blue blood began to leak from the wound. “Buffy!” she yelled.

The Slayer grabbed the sword, then pulled it toward her, slicing through the tentacle and increasing the size of the wound. The she placed the blade in the centre of the wound and stabbed it as far as it would go. The tentacle spasmed, then, releasing Xander, it headed for Buffy. The Slayer swung her sword in a wide arc, the blade finding the wound. It sliced straight through, severing the tip of the tentacle. The remaining stump quickly withdrew back in to the sand.

“What was that?” Tara asked as they stared at a patch of blue-blood stained sand, the only sign that the tentacle had ever been there. Well, that and one other.

“Hey guys?” Xander yelled, waist deep in the sand. “A little help?”

                ********************

Anya turned as the shop door opened. “Welcome customers” she said, a large smile on her face. It faded as Buffy walked in, followed by Willow, Tara and Xander. “Oh, its you. I take something big and nasty wants to kill us all again?”

“You’re not wrong” Xander said. He carried a large, blanket-wrapped bundle over one shoulder. “Shall I put this in the training room?” he asked Buffy. The Slayer nodded.

“Hey, technically that’s my training room” Anya shouted at his back.”

“Anya, we need the demon reference books” Tara said. The vengeance demon turned on her, then gave in with a sigh. “Fine, you know where they are.” She turned and went over to the counter.

“I’m gonna go take a look at our catch of the day” Willow said, heading for the training room. “You two make a start on the research.” As she disappeared through the back door, Tara returned, her arms loaded with books, and she and Buffy started to read.

Several hours later, Dawn wandered in the shop. “Hey Anya” she said as the shopkeeper came over. “Are the others here? Buffy left a message on the machine, saying to meet her here.”

“They’re all in my training room” Anya told her, emphasising her ownership. “Go on” she said, waving the teen away. Dawn rolled her eyes, then headed in to the back.

The others all sat on the floor, open books all around them. Dawn peered over Buffy’s shoulder to see what they were all looking at. “Eew, what’s that?” she said, pointing at the metre long piece of severed tentacle.

“A piece of the monster that tried to eat Xander for breakfast” Tara told her. Xander shrugged and rolled his eyes.

“You guys, I think I’ve got it” Willow said. She had managed to prise off a few of the hexagonal scales, and was holding them against a diagram of identical scales in a book. “This is why that thing was so hard to injure, its scale are made from a silicon based compound. Its skin is practically made of stone.” She muttered to herself as she read more. “Hexagonal scales, hard as stone, blue blood, yep, that’s our guy.” She turned the page. “Oh crap.”

“What is it?” Tara asked. Buffy shot an annoyed look at the redhead, they weren’t meant to swear in front of Dawn.

Willow turned the book around so they could all see the diagram. It showed a bizarre looking creature, its body shaped like a dome. The scale showed it to be about 600 metres across. Tentacles sprouted from all across its upper surface.

“Oh crap” Buffy muttered.

“Are all its tentacles the size of the one we saw?” Xander asked nervouly.

“Longer” Willow told him as she read. “That things at least 20 metres down, and the tentacles reach all the way up.”

“There’s at least a hundred” Tara said, a worried frown on her forehead.

“That’s just the feeding tentacles” Willow said. She pointed to the base of the creature. “It has more at the base, for movement.”

“Feeding tentacles?” Xander asked, going pale. “So that thing really was going to…”

“Eat you for breakfast” Willow finished. She pointed to the apex of the dome. “That’s it mouth.”

“So, the missing kids, and the policemen?” Buffy asked, already knowing the answer.

“Eaten” Willow said, the corners of her mouth turning down. She continued reading. “By a Zorath demon, also know as a Behemoth. They hibernate for years, even centuries, burying themselves, or hiding at the bottom of lakes.”

“So I guess he’s a little hungry” Xander said.

“It hasn’t woken up yet” Willow said.

“Huh? It seemed pretty lively to me” Buffy pointed out.

“Its brain is still asleep, the tentacles are just working on automatic, reacting to stimuli. They become active shortly before it awakes, grabbing anything that’s alive. That’s why it didn’t attack the kid’s van, and why it didn’t send other tentacles to get the rest of us. That one tentacle was just reacting to the sound of Xander’s voice.”

“And when it does wake up?” Tara asked.

“I’m guessing it doesn’t like to start the day with a cup of coffee” Buffy said.

“Nuh uh” Willow said. “It’ll dig its way to the surface, then go for a big breakfast, and I mean big. Like, Sunnydale big. Then maybe L.A. for lunch.”

“So how do we kill it?” Buffy asked. “I mean, its skin is armour plated, and I don’t think stabbing it with a sword is going to do much harm.” She stared at the picture in the book again. “Look at the size of it!”

“And magic didn’t seem to affect it either” Tara added.

“I don’t think we have much time” Willow said. “It says here it’s a matter of weeks between the tentacles becoming active, and the demon waking up, and we don’t know when the tentacles started twitchin’.”

“Um, could Riley help us?” Dawn ventured, unsure how her sister would take the suggestion. “I mean, the army?”

“She’s right” Xander said. “Riley and Lara Croft are sure to have some fancy toys. We wait for this thing to come to the surface, then shoot a few missiles at it.”

“We don’t have time” Tara said. Everyone turned to look at her. “The police search starts tomorrow. They’ll be hundreds of officers and volunteers out there.”

“And even if the Zorath is still asleep, its tentacles will sense them” Willow explained. “We have to kill it now.”

“How?” Buffy asked. “You said its 20 metres down.”

“There’s no way we could dig that deep, not even if we took the mechanical diggers from work” Xander said.

“Could we use magic?” Dawn asked Tara. “I know it didn’t work on the demon, but could you dig a hole with magic?”

Tara’s brow furrowed as she thought about that. “I suppose you could levitate the sand” she said thoughtfully. “I don’t know about moving it around though, you’d have to keep it in the air until you were finished.”

“Could you do it?” Buffy asked.

“Not on my own.”

All eyes turned to Willow. “I’m no use” she said miserably. “I can’t even float a pencil.” Tara frowned and put a comforting hand on her lover’s shoulder. Willow turned and gave her a small smile, but still seemed annoyed at her inability to help.

“Besides, we don’t know how to kill it once we do get down there” Xander pointed out.

Dawn’s suggestion had given Tara an idea, she just wasn’t sure if it was a good one. “Um, we do know two wizards” she said. “They could help with the digging, and they might even know of a way to kill it.”

“Ask the Order for help?” Buffy asked, appalled. “We know practically nothing about them. We don’t even know if they’d help.”

“Buffy, we’re coming up with nothing here” Willow said. “What other choice do we have?”

Omiko seems to have gleaned a lot from Tara in the short time she talked with her.

Clever Will, analysing the scale patterns of the tentacle for a weakness. Is it wrong of me to have hoped the (really) big beasty would eat Xander?

I wonder if Omiko learned all that from talking with Tara. Talking isn't a "special ability" I think :) .

Still not big on trusting those order people here...

LadyCallie - Cheers! Glad you're enjoying it.

**********************************************

The vampire disintegrated as its head was sliced cleanly from its body. Nadia spun, and her sword found the neck of the other vamp that had been about to jump her. With both her enemies destroyed, she took the opportunity to check the progress of the other warriors. At least half the vampire gang were dust, and the Order had taken no casualties. She smiled grimly with pride, then leapt back in to the battle. Her sword moved so fast it blurred as she dispatched another vamp, then turned as one of the undead tried to escape. Leaving its comrades to their fate, it turned and ran. Nadia spun on her heels, confident that her soldiers could handle the rest of the vamps, and set off after the runner.

The creature ran with super human speed, but the warrior kept it in sight. The vampire turned a corner, and Nadia pushed herself to go faster, determined to minimise the time the creature was out of her sight.

As she neared the corner, she heard the familiar, unearthly sound of a vampire’s death scream, and a cloud of dust spread across the road. She turned the corner to come face to face with the Slayer, stake in hand. She looked down at the much shorter blonde and raised an eyebrow.

“I wondered what he was running from” Buffy said. “Listen, we’ve been looking for you for the last hour.”

As she ‘we’, Nadia looked beyond the Slayer to see that that most of her friends were with her: the sister, the witches and the young man. “What is this, a family outing?” she asked dryly.

“Look, we need to talk to your leader” Buffy said earnestly. “Its important.”

The other three warriors came round the corner. “We got them all” one reported, then joined the other two in eyeing the Scoobies warily.

“Oh, um, hi” Buffy said uneasily as she recognised the man she had almost staked.

“Why do you want to see our leader?” Nadia asked.

Buffy took a deep breath. “We need your help” she admitted. “There’s this thing, huge monster, lots of people in danger, happens a lot around here.” She shrugged. “This demon’s a little bigger than most.”

Nadia hadn’t expected that response. Truth be told, before now she couldn’t imagine the Slayer asking anyone for help. She wasn’t sure she would have in the same situation. Briefly she wondered whether that made her more self reliant, or more arrogant. Still, introspection could wait till later. She reached a decision. “This way” she said, turning.

                ********************

Buffy stepped through the small side door and in to the warehouse. “You guys really don’t go in for the creature comforts, do you” she said. Nadia ignored her. The other members of the Order turned as they saw their warriors had bought guests. As the Scoobies filed in and the door was shut behind them, one of the scholars knocked on the door of a small office, then stood back as Mike and Saul emerged.

Tara grasped Willow’s hand, then took Dawn’s as she felt the teen move closer. The Order had moved away from them, forming a rough circle around the Slayer and her friends. She turned and saw that the warriors now stood between them and the door. The other members of the Order were eyeing them suspiciously. Their stance wasn’t threatening, but nor was it friendly. Except for one. Tara was surprised to see Omi waving at her, a smile on her face. She shrugged, then gave a small wave back.

“Ms Summers” Mike said. “To what do we owe this pleasure?” His tone was amiable, but his eyes shifted as he examined the Scoobies, confused by their presence here.

Buffy took a deep breath, she didn’t like this plan, but it was the only one they had. “We need your help. There’s a huge demon out in the desert, its hibernating right now but when it wakes up we’re all on the menu.”

“What kind of demon?” Mike asked. He tried to imagine the kind of beast the Slayer wouldn’t dare tackle on her own, and found he didn’t want to.

Buffy turned to Willow. “A Zorath” she said.

Mike turned to his chief scholar. “David?”

The scholar stroked his beard nervously. “Very large, omnivorous, skin hard as stone.” He looked at Willow. “It’s still hibernating?” he asked. The redhead nodded. “So its still underground.” He retreated to a table set up in one corner of the building, beckoning the other scholar, then each opened a large book and began to read.

“I take it your research found no easy way to kill them” Mike said. Willow shook her head. “Well, perhaps they will” he said, indicating the scholars, but his voice was uneasy.

“Um, we do have a plan” Tara said. She looked down as all eyes turned to her, but kept talking. “Well, half a plan. The demon’s at least 20 metres down under the sand, but we can get to it if we levitate the sand above it.”

Saul stepped forward, a thoughtful expression on his face. “An ingenious idea.”

“You could only move it straight up” Marcus said. “Any lateral movement, and you’d lose control of the individual grains.”

“But raising it would be the hardest part” Saul said as he wroked through the problem. “Once it was up, keeping it up would be relatively easy.” He turned to Tara. “How much sand are we talking?”

“Well, its 20 metres down, and its about 600 metres across…”

“I see” Saul said, running a hand back through his hair. “Still, with four magic users, I’m sure we can work something out.

“Three magic users” Willow said quietly. She gave a small smile as she felt Tara squeeze her hand, but her inability to help still stung.

“Three?” The wizard shrugged, not pushing the point. “So” he asked Tara. “Do you have any thoughts on which spell we should use?”

As the magic users began discussing the details of the spell, Buffy drew Mike off to one side. “We don’t have much time” she told him.

“The demon will wake soon?”

She shook her head. “We don’t know when it’ll wake up. But even though its asleep, its tentacles can hunt, they home in on living things. And with the police search tomorrow…”

Mike looked at his watch, tomorrow was nearly today. “There’s not much time” he finished. “Saul” he called. The wizard turned. “Progress?”

“We can get down to the creature, and I think we can use a spell to prevent the tentacles sensing us.”

“And killing it?” Buffy asked.

“I’ve got one or two thoughts, I’ll have to do some tests” he said.

“We should head out at dawn” Mike said.

“Right, I don’t fancy fighting this thing in the dark” Buffy agreed. “And it gives us a few hours before the police get out there.”

“I assume you’ve been up all day?” Mike said. Buffy nodded. “There’s some time before we go. Perhaps you should get some sleep.” He gestured at the screened off sleeping areas.

Buffy paused. The suggestion was a sensible one, and the planning had gone so smoothly that she had almost forgotten she knew almost nothing about these people. She looked around at the others. She knew she could remain alert even after being awake for over 24 hours, but she doubted the others could. Going home, then coming back would take valuable time. More importantly, Buffy wanted to keep an eye on the Order’s preparations. She didn’t want any surprises out in the desert. “We’ll sleep in shifts” she said.

“What?” Dawn asked. Having not been involved in the talking, she and Xander had edged closer to see what they could overhear. “We’re gonna sleep, here?”

“You are” Buffy told her. I’ll stay awake, make sure everything’s safe. Then you guys can keep watch while I sleep.”

Dawn looked uneasy, but she nodded. She knew Buffy wouldn’t put her in unnecessary danger, and that fact that her sister trusted her to stand watch meant things couldn’t be that risky. Xander had other ideas. “You’re standing first watch alone?” he asked, his tone clearly showing what he thought of that plan.

Buffy thought quickly. She had planned to let the others sleep for as long as possible before she took her rest, but she knew Xander would go along with her in that. Plus, being the only one awake could be a serious problem if the Order did turn out to have more sinister intentions than she believed. “You and me are first watch” she told him. “The rest of you, get some sleep.”

“Huh?” Willow said. She and Tara had been deep in conversation with the wizards, and hadn’t heard Buffy talking.

Quickly she explained the plan, not giving the women time to object. She ordered them all in to bed, then whispered to Xander “you stay near the sleeping area, make sure no one tries anything.” He nodded. She turned to Saul. “So, tell me about these thoughts of yours.”

                ********************

Willow and Tara stepped behind the screens and sat on the bed. “Do you think this is such a great idea?” Willow asked.

Tara frowned, she had her own doubts, but she trusted Buffy’s judgement. “I guess it makes sense to stay here and sleep” she said, a little unsure if she really believed that. “Besides, Buffy’s out there.”

“I guess” Willow said. She lay down, then shifted to the far side of the narrow bed so Tara could lie beside her. “I don’t think much of the décor though, makes me feel like I’m in hospital.”

“How ya doin’ Dawn?” Tara called out.

“I’m good” the teen replied from the neighbouring cubicle.

Tara smiled, then stifled a large yawn. “Ok, Buffy was right about us needing to sleep” she said. Their encounter with the behemoth that morning seemed days ago.

“Ok” Willow tried to say, but was interrupted by a yawn of her own. “Why are yawns contagious?” she asked. “I never understood that.”

“You could do a research project on it” Tara suggested as she moulded herself to Willow’s side, then put an arm across her lover’s chest. “Dr Rosenberg’s Theory of Yawning.”

“It’ll change the world” Willow said, keeping a straight face. “Probably get a Nobel Prize.” Tara kissed her cheek, then they both closed their eyes.

A few minutes later, Tara opened hers. Despite being tired, she could never resist the opportunity for some Willow watching. With Willow on her back and Tara beside her, she could only see Willow in profile, but it was enough to see that the corners of her mouth were turned down. “Willow? You have sad face.”

The redhead didn’t open her eyes. “Not sad, thinking.”

“You have ‘thinking sad thoughts’ face” Tara persisted.

Willow opened her eyes. “Its… I just…” she turned her head to face Tara. “I wanna be useful, y’know.” As Tara opened her mouth to reply, Willow continued. “And now you have to do a difficult spell with two guys we barely know, and I can’t help you.”

“Willow…” Tara hugged her closer. “Ok, first, you will get better at magic, you just have to take things one step at a time. Second, just because you’re not doing the spell doesn’t mean you’re not important, you helped just as much as the others when we were working out the details.” She kissed her on the cheek. “And you’re not just useful, you’re essential.”

Willow smiled as she recognised the words. “Ok, I get it, no more sulking.”

“No sulking” Tara agreed. “Just snuggles.” Willow rolled on to her side and they held each other as they fell asleep.

                ********************

Mike walked in to his office, then stood in the doorway and watched as Saul explained his plan to Buffy and the other Order members. He turned and crossed the small room to a large cupboard against one wall. He unlocked it, and examined the weapons stored inside. One half held sword, axes, crossbows and the like. The other held rifles, handguns and other firearms. He took one rifle down from its rack and began checking it, more for something to do than because it needed doing. He heard the door close and turned to see Marcus. Like Mike, the wizard had already heard Saul’s plan. “That won’t be any use” he said, indicating the gun.

Mike reached in to a crate at the bottom of the cupboard and withdrew a case of amour-piercing rounds. “Even with these?” he asked.

Marcus shook his head. Always the soldier’s first reaction, shoot first and ask questions later. Still, in this case he couldn’t blame Mike, he’d rather attack the behemoth from a distance too. “According to the texts, its skin will repel anything” he said. “If you managed to hit the joins between scales, you might wound it, but a bullet would have to travel through metres of fat and muscle before it reached even the minor organs.”

Mike sighed and replaced the weapon and ammunition. “I don’t like this plan of Saul’s” he said.

Marcus nodded, he didn’t like it much either, but Mike’s admission gave him the opening he needed. “Given how risky it is, do you really think we should involve the Slayer?”

“She did bring this creature to our attention. Besides, can you really imagine her agreeing to let us take care of it?”

“They’re children” Marcus protested.

Mike almost smiled. He had assumed that Marcus’ complaint was about the effect working with the Slayer could have on their mission. He was pleased to see the ambitious wizard putting people before their goals for once. “I’m sure the Slayer’s people are quite capable” he said.

“They want the sensitives in the combat zone, participating in the attack!” He gestured at the large crystal on its pedestal. As Willow and Tara slept, it flickered with a ghostly light, as their unconscious minds sensed an imbalance in the world, and reacted to that distortion. “Without them, our whole mission will fail.”

Mike frowned, perhaps his first assumption had been correct. “We’ll make every effort to ensure Willow and Tara’s safety” he said, stressing his use of their names.

                ********************

“Will, wake up.”

“Huh?” Willow rubbed her eyes sleepily as she returned to the waking world. Tara shook her again. “Uh, ok, awake, yes.” She pulled herself in to a sitting position, then glanced at her watch. “Hey, Buffy was supposed to wake us over an hour ago.” She turned to see Buffy standing at the end of the bed. The Slayer glared at her.

“Um, I pointed that out too” Tara said.

“So did I” Dawn called from outside the cubicle.

“Some people would be grateful for the extra sleep” Buffy said, a little put out by everyone finding fault with her.

“What about you, you’ll only get a few hours rest” Willow said.

“That’s all I need” the Slayer replied.

“What about Xander?” Tara asked as they left the cubicle, pointing at the yawning young man.

“Its ok, I’m good” he protested, then covered his mouth as he yawned again.

“You, bed” Buffy ordered. Then she turned to the others. “We’ve kinda worked out a plan” she told them. “Mike’ll fill you in. I’m gonna get some sleep.” She turned so that none of the order could see her lips as she spoke. “They haven’t tried anything funny so far” she whispered, “but keep an eye on them.” Then she turned and went behind the screens.

Tara, Willow and Dawn sat down at a table that had been set up in the middle of the warehouse. Mike and the two wizards already sat there. “You’re well rested I hope?” Mike said.

“We’re fine” Willow said. In truth, they had all had far less sleep today than they needed, but she wasn’t about to admit that. And there was something more, she was sure she had dreamed, but the memories were slipping away. Of course, it had been the first time for over a week that she hadn’t taken the herbal mixture before sleeping, that probably explained why her sleep hadn’t been particularly restful. “Aren’t any of you tired?”

Mike shook his head. “Most of us sleep during the day. It allows us to patrol all night.”

Willow didn’t like the suggestion that the Scoobie’s day time responsibilities made them less effective at fighting evil, but she let it go. “So, what’s the plan?”

Saul leaned forward. “First we’ll dig a hole by floating the sand up” he said. “That’s the hard part. Once the sand is up, one of us should be capable of keeping it there. Then the other two magic users will cast a disorientation spell on the behemoth, to keep its tentacles from sensing us.

“I thought magic didn’t work on it” Dawn pointed out. “Tara’s spell to make it let Xander go didn’t work.”

“It is highly resistant” Saul agreed. “Those scales seem to repel practically anything. But the reference books suggest that with the beast still hibernating, and with two of us casting, we should be able to blind it. I don’t know how successful we’d be if the creature were to wake up.”

“Let’s just hope it doesn’t before we get there.” Mike said. “With the demon uncovered, we can attack.”

“How?” Tara asked.

“We’ll poison it” Saul said. “Mix up something nasty and through it down its throat.”

Willow recalled the diagram of the demon she had seen. “Isn’t the mouth right at the top, at its highest point?”

“Yes” Mike said. “Someone will have to climb up there and throw the poison in.”

The Scoob’s mouths dropped open. “I don’t like the sound of this” Willow said. “Can’t one of you levitate the poison up to the mouth?”

“The mouth is over 300 metres away from where we’ll be standing” Saul pointed out. “And just because the tentacles won’t sense doesn’t mean one won’t hit it by accident.”

Dawn looked anxiously at the cubicle where Buffy slept. “Yes” Mike said, catching her glance. “Your sister has volunteered to carry the poison. Quite forcefully, in fact.” He grimaced a little as he remembered Buffy’s insistence that she be the one to make the climb. “We haven’t decided yet who will be going.”

Saul stood up. “I’ve got to mix us up some beast poison” he said. The old man seemed to be enjoying himself. “Willow, Tara, would you help me?”

Tara glanced at Dawn, about to ask if she could come too. Dawn looked from Tara to the sleeping area, after all, she had promised Buffy she would stand watch. “I’ll help” she said. Willow opened her mouth to protest, then closed it again. With her magical abilities, Tara was the one best able to look after herself, and they couldn’t leave Dawn, or the sleeping Buffy and Xander alone.

Saul nodded, then led Tara over to the far corner of the warehouse. “You don’t have much privacy here” Tara commented. In truth, she was glad that she and Willow could still see each other across the large building.

“Needs must” the wizard said as he opened a large wooden chest, and began removing several bags and boxes. He set up a collapsible table that had been leaning against the wall, and placed the objects on it. Finally he produced a beaker and a small oil burner. Setting up the beaker on a tripod over the flame, he then filled it with water from a flask. “Have you studied herbs?” he asked.

Tara nodded. She watched as he produced several plants from his collection of bags and boxes. Some were still whole plants, others had been crushed to powder, or made in to tinctures. She picked up one. “Nightshade” she muttered as she read the label. In small doses it could be used as a strong painkiller, in larger doses it was lethal. It was also used in several spells. She placed it back on the table and took another. “Hemlock…” This plant had little medicinal use, and was highly toxic. It was also used in a number of spells, most of them based in dark magic.

Saul noticed her worried frown. “You never know when something will come in handy” he said jovially as he took the bottle from her. Already he had added several of the more toxic herbs to the beaker, now Tara watched as he added the Hemlock. “Hmm, needs something more” the wizard muttered.

“More?” Tara asked. “I should think a few millilitres of that would kill a human, and practically anything else.”

“But this demon is pretty big” Saul protested as he rummaged in another box. “Aha.” He produced a clear plastic container. Inside were some leaves Tara had never seen before. At the centre it was a vibrant red, but the colour darkened outward, through purple, to a black line around the edge. He removed the lid, then used a pair of tweezers to pull out a leaf.

“I’ve never seen that one” Tara said, reaching out curiously.

“Don’t touch” Saul warned. “The toxins would soak through your skin pretty quickly, and you’d have about five minutes to say goodbye. If you ate this, you’d be dead before you hit the ground.”

Tara pulled her hand back quickly. “W-what is it?” She had never heard of such a dangerous plant.

“I can’t pronounce its name” Saul said. “It doesn’t grow around here.”

“I’d gathered that.”

“I mean it doesn’t grow in this dimension.” As Tara stared at him he smiled. “Our masters are very well travelled” he said, dropping the leaf in to the bubbling mixture.

                ********************

“This is the poison?” Buffy asked, indicating the flask in Saul’s hands. The wizard nodded. “So, you just pour it in to its mouth?” Upon waking she had insisted that they leave as soon as possible.

“Just throw the flask in” he told her. “The beast’s stomach acid will eat through the flask and release the poison in seconds.” He turned and gave the flask to Mike.

“Hey, why are you giving it to him?” Buffy asked.

“I know I can’t dissuade you from doing this” he said, “but we’ll stand a better chance if two of us go.”

Buffy reached for the flask. “I thought we agreed I was going.”

“No Ms Summers, you said you were going.” He smiled ironically. “And we realised that arguing was pointless. As should you. I’m coming with you.”

Buffy looked as if she were going to argue, then relented. “Fine. Ok, lets go.” She turned and headed towards the main doors. The scoobies and most of the Order followed.

As he made to follow, Mike was pulled back by Nadia. “You going was never part of the plan” she whispered harshly in his ear. “You’re our leader, you shouldn’t be needlessly placing yourself in danger.”

Mike put a hand to his throat and rubbed the sword pendent he wore between his finger and thumb. “I’m also a soldier” he said quietly. “We can’t let the Slayer face this alone.”

“But it doesn’t have to be you who goes” the chief warrior protested. “You could…”

“Order someone else to go on this crazy mission?” Mike interrupted. He shook his head. “No I couldn’t.”

                ********************

Two vans pulled off the road and on to the sand. After a few minutes driving, they came to a halt, and the sliding door on the side of the first opened. The Scoobies jumped out and stood waiting as the warrior who had driven them got out. The door on the second van slid open to reveal Mike, all four warriors and both wizards. “Here?” the leader asked.

Buffy looked around, the place looked different in the pale, early morning sunlight. Still, they had checked maps before they left, and she was reasonably sure this was where they had encountered the demon. She nodded.

“Yeah, this is the place” Xander said. He pointed. “I recognise that patch of sand over there.”

“Now then” Saul said, rubbing his hands together. “If you could all stand back. Tara?”

The others all retreated back to the shelter of the vans. Tara turned nervously to Willow. “You’ll do great” the redhead told her, squeezing her hand. She gave her a quick kiss, then let go her hand and went over to stand with the others. Tara took a deep breath, then walked over to the two wizards.

They stood in a rough circle, facing each other. Saul and Marcus raised their hands, and placed the palms of one each together. Tara wiped some nervous perspiration from hers, then placed her palms against the men’s. Instantly she felt the build up of power within the circle created by their bodies.

“Focus on the sand” Saul said. They closed their eyes, and stretched out their minds, trying to feel the ground stretching out before them. When he could feel their magic beginning to focus, Saul whispered “up.”

Over by the vans, Dawn pulled on Willow’s sleeve, then whispered in her ear “what are they doing?”

“They have to co-ordinate their minds” Willow explained. “So they can focus all their power in one place. Look.”

Dawn turned, but saw nothing. “What?” Then she saw, a few hundred metres away, the sand moving. First it simply moved and churned, and for a moment she thought a tentacle was about to emerge. Then, the sand began to flow up in to the air.

“Woah” Buffy said. It was like watching an hourglass go backwards. The biggest hourglass in the world.

Sand was now pouring in to the sky like a column. A hundred metres up it spread out, forming a bizarre, solid cloud. Beneath the cloud, and sizeable depression had grown. Suddenly, a tentacle burst from the ground, waving angrily through the flying sand grains.

“Its ok” Willow said as she saw Dawn stiffen. “Its just reacting to the movement of the sand. It doesn’t know we’re here.”

A second tentacle burst from the sand, then another. The depression in the ground was now several hundred metres in diameter, and at least 10 metres deep at the centre. The cloud above them was huge, blocking out the sun. and still the sand rose up.

The air was now thick with sand grains. Through the storm, they could see many tentacles waving furiously. And then it was over. Buffy looked up at the huge, dark cloud hovering above them, then slowly walked up to the three magic users.

They stood on the edge of a huge crater, its sides dropping steeply. Occupying most of the depression was the behemoth, every bit as big and ugly as the books described. It looked like a hill or dome, with tentacle sprouting all across its upper surface. It mouth was simply a circular hole at the apex of the dome. Now that the sand was gone, its hundred tentacles waved lazily in the air. “Oh man” the Slayer whispered.

“Marcus, are you ready?” Saul asked. The younger wizard nodded. He lowered his hands, breaking the circle, then pushed his palms together in front of him, focusing his own magic. “And… stop” Saul said. He and Tara ceased their spell. Tara looked up, then breathed a sigh of relief as the ominous cloud remained airbourne, supported by Marcus’ will.

“Why don’t they just drop the sand to one side, then move it back when we’re done?” Xander asked. He didn’t like the idea of being under tons of floating sand.

“They could if it was a solid object” Willow said. “But if they tried with this, they’d never be able to keep control of each individual grain, they’d end up dropping the lot.” She hurried over to where Tara and Saul stood, watching the demon. “Hey” she said, smiling as she took Tara’s hand. “Didn’t I tell you you’d do great?” Her lover grinned at her.

The others came up and stood alone the edge of the crater. “Now that is just… wrong” Xander said. “I like my demons to be the two armed, two legged, roughly man sized variety.”

“Buffy…” Dawn said as she went to her sister’s side.

“Dawnie, I have to its my job” the Slayer said as she looked fondly up at her sister.

“I know, but I don’t have to like it.”

“Right, let’s see what we can do about those tentacles” Saul said. He and Tara faced each other, then raised their palms and pressed them together. “Disorientate” they said together. “Confuse. Blind this creature, let it not sense the world around it.” Tara turned and looked down at the beast. She could feel the power being generated in the space between her and Saul, then cast out over the crater like a blanket, blocking the creature’s senses. “Ready” the wizard called out.

“Right” Mike said. He and Buffy walked back to the vans and picked up the two massive broadswords they had brought with them. “Are you sure you want your sister here?” he asked.

Buffy was sure of just the opposite, but the alternatives – leaving Dawn in the Order warehouse or having her walk home alone, appealed even less. “She’ll be fine” she said. “Xander and Willow will look after her.”

He nodded, then picked up the flask of poison. “Lets go.” They walked back to the crater edge and stood, looking down.

“You know, you could let me do this alone” Buffy said. “You don’t have to come.”

Mike continued staring at the behemoth, but said “You don’t have to come. You could let me do this alone.” His point made, he turned to face her. “Come on.”

They slid down the side of the crater, causing a mini avalanche as they went, then stood before the demon. It loomed like a hill before them, its tentacles like a bizarre forest. Thinker tentacles were coiled around the base. Buffy took a deep breath, then gripped a lower tentacle and pulled herself on to the edge of the creature’s body. “At least its not slimy” she said. Its skin felt like smooth, cold stone. She stepped back as Mike joined her on the behemoth’s back, then turned and looked up at the mouth, about 300 metres and a steep climb away. “Ready?” she asked.

The Australian nodded. “No worries” he said, eyeing the tentacles nervously. They were all at least 35 metres long, and all could easily carry them from their present position to the beast’s mouth in seconds. Holding their swords one handed and leaning forward for balance, they began walking up the creature’s back.

The others watched from the crater edge. The Slayer and the soldier slowly walked up the demon, moving around any tentacles in their path. The tentacles waved lazily, their senses blocked by the disorientation spell.

Buffy felt her foot slip and grabbed hold of Mike to keep from falling. She looked down at the scales, and saw what appeared to be a smooth half-sphere embedded in the creature’s skin. “What’s that?” she asked. They were only 50 or so metres in to their journey, and she could see more half-spheres further up. “It’s smooth, slippery.” The half-sphere split in two, and the halves retracted to reveal a large eye, red with a green pupil. “Oh god, is that an eye?” She looked at the hundreds of other half-spheres across the beast back. “Ew, just when I thought this thing couldn’t be any grosser.”

The tentacles near them began to sway more vigorously. “Ah, Buffy? I think it can see us” Mike said.

Buffy jabbed the point of her sword in to the eye. Several tentacles jerked violently. “Come on, run!” she said, moving uphill as fast as she could. Behind them, several tentacles swept down over the injured eye, striking the area where they had just been standing.

Tara felt something, the demon was fighting their spell. “Saul?”

“Its waking up” the wizard said, slightly panicked. “Increase your power, we have to keep it as distracted as possible!”

The tentacles were now curving back, reaching down on to the demon’s back, searching for the irritating creatures that crawled on it. But something was wrong. The beast was still sluggish from its long sleep, but it could feel something blanketing it, trying to stop it feeling, trying to stop it hunt. It roared in frustration.

Nadia looked down as the tentacles began to weave back and forth blindly, hoping to catch the two struggling across the beast by luck. As it roared, she yelled “its waking up! Come on, we have to distract it!” She and the other warriors ran down the side of the crater, then began hacking at the beast’s lower limbs with their swords. They couldn’t damage the stone-skinned beast, but they could certainly piss it off. Upper tentacles began swooping down in their direction, but fortunately the disorientation spell kept them from co-ordinating their attacks. Any limbs that came too close were batted away by the flats of swords.

Buffy and Mike frantically crawled up the side of the beast, knocking aside tentacles with their swords and stabbing any eyes that opened near them. They were nearly half way up. “Its trying to find us!” Mike yelled.

No shit Buffy thought. “The spell’s still confusing it!” she yelled back. “And we’re not the only thing it has to deal with!” She pointed down to where the warriors were still banging their swords against the demon. As they watched, one drew a hand gun and fired, the bullet ricocheted off the behemoth and in to the sand.

The demon was angry now. Two food-creatures were crawling up its back, some more were poking at its skin, and something was stopping it thinking straight. Its sluggish thoughts came to a conclusion: staying still wasn’t doing any good, so it should move.

Nadia placed her sword at the join between two scales, then leaned on it with all her weight. The blade sank in to the beast, but apart from releasing some blue blood, did no appreciable damage. Suddenly, the thick lower tentacles uncoiled and stretched out towards the crater walls. The warriors hastily retreated as the monstrous creature began dragging itself up the side of the depression.

As the demon lurched, Mike fell to his knees and Buffy lost her balance completely. She began rolling down the slope of the behemoth’s back, but stopped as Mike grabbed her arm. He held on to her as she gripped the scaly skin and pulled herself back up.

The warriors were backing away from the advancing creature, shooting at it with their guns. Most bullets impacted harmlessly against the armour, though some found their mark in the weaker joints between the scales. However, these few bullets only travelled a few feet through the beast’s thick blubber before coming to a halt.

Unable to hunt properly, the behemoth was now lashing out in all directions. A tentacle swept along the crater rim, towards those watching the battle below. Xander dived to the ground, pushing Dawn down too, and the limb passed over their heads.

Marcus was still staring at the sand cloud, all his attention focussed on keeping it in the air. The tentacle hit him with full force. The wizard was sent flying through the air, then crashed to the ground, rolled a few more metres, and was still. The levitation spell broken, the huge cloud of sand shuddered, and began to break up.

“No!” Saul yelled, then looked up, wondering why tons of sand hadn’t crushed them all. The cloud still floated.

“Willow!” Tara yelled. The redhead stood still, staring straight at the cloud, one arm stretched towards it. She could almost see the magic radiating from her outstretched hand.

“I don’t know how long I can hold it!” Willow said through gritted teeth. Already her face was creased in pain, and sweat formed on her brow.

“Willow!” Tara called again, making to run to her lover’s aid.

“No!” Saul shouted, gripping her hands tightly so she couldn’t pull her palms from his. “Don’t break the spell! If you do, Buffy and Mike won’t stand a chance. Neither will we!”

“Willow, hold on!” Tara shouted, desperate to help her but knowing she couldn’t. As she watched, frantic, Willow dropped to her knees. “Xander, help her!” Tara screamed. The young man ran to his friend’s side and helped to support her weight, but that was the only help he could offer.

Dawn ran up to the struggling witch. “How can I help?”

“Go check on Marcus” Xander told her. The wizard still hadn’t moved, and they needed him revived soon if Willow couldn’t hold the sand. Besides, he wanted Dawn away from the crater edge. More tentacles were waving dangerously close.

Willow screamed with the effort of sustaining the spell. Her body hadn’t channelled any significant power since she gave up magic nearly nine months ago. Grains of sand began to fall like rain. “Will, come on, you’ve got to hold it!” Xander shouted in her ear as he watched the floating sand swirl like a storm cloud.

She screwed her eyes shut with the pain. “I – can’t – even – float – a – pencil!” She screamed in his ear, taking gasping breaths between each word. Up. Float. Levitate. She repeated the words like a mantra, struggling to keep her power focused. The magic running through her felt like a river of fire. She felt nauseous, and lights were starting to flash in front of her eyes. Sand began to fall in ever greater amounts.

Buffy and Mike ran up the beast’s back, desperately deflecting any tentacles that came near them with their swords. They held on to the scales, tentacles, each other, anything to stop them from falling down the sloping back. They both squinted, grains of sand were blowing in to their eyes, and the fall was increasing.

No time to worry why the sand was falling. They had to get to the top. Buffy dived, and landed only a couple of metres below the gaping mouth. The beast dragged itself forward again, knocking her over. She slipped her fingers in to the joints between scales, hanging on for dear life, and watched as her dropped sword slid away down the beast’s back. She looked behind her to see that Mike was also holding on desperately. “Throw me the flask!” She yelled. He did so, and she caught it with one hand. Carefully, trying to compensate for the creature’s movement, she stood, then threw the flask up toward the mouth. It moved in a perfect arc and disappeared down the beast’s throat.

The demon convulsed. Buffy, standing up in an awkward half crouch, was knocked off her feet. She rolled down the beast in to Mike, who grabbed her and stopped her fall. Staying spread-eagled against the beast’s skin, they began to half crawl, half slide backwards down the slope.

The tentacles began to spasm as the poison wrecked havoc on the demon’s nervous system. First the upper tentacles ceased their random attacks, then the lower ones lost their grip on the side of the crater. The massive beast slid back down to the bottom of the depression. The jarring impact caused Mike and Buffy to both lose their grip, and the rolled helplessly towards the base of the creature.

As the demon stopped its attacks, Saul ended the disorientation spell and released Tara’s hands. Tara ran to her lover while Saul flung his arm towards the sky, and the boiling cloud of sand. The falling sand was now dense enough to obscure vision, and he couldn’t see if Mike and Buffy were clear of the creature yet. He focussed all his power, trying to maintain the crumbling spell, but it was too late. The spell was broken, and it would take far too long to cast another.

“Willow, baby? I’m here” Tara said, dropping to her knees beside her girlfriend.

Willow opened her eyes. “I’m sorry” she whispered as her eyes rolled back and she collapsed, unconscious. The floating cloud of sand began to break up.

Mike and Buffy rolled down the behemoth’s back, then landed heavily on the crater floor. Buffy picked herself up, then yanked Mike to his feet. “Come on!” Peering through the sand filled air, they rushed toward the crater wall and started climbing.

“Get away from the crater!” Saul shouted. Xander and Tara carried Willow to the vans, and the warriors ran from the crater’s edge as the remaining sand thundered down from the sky, burying the dying behemoth.

The battle with the big beastie was very well described. It must have some force of will to have struggled against the confusion spell Tara and Saul set.

Poor Tara must have been really worried about Willow when she took control of Marcus' spell, and she couldn't go to her as she had to stay with Saul.

Great chapter. Thanks.

Woo & Hoo :) . Poor Wilow is going to have headaches and nose-bleeds for weeks now, but she proved herself usefull (which she mostly needed to proof TO herself anyway). The image of Willow standing there, one arm stretched really worked for me, could really see that. Tara must be worried sick with Willow unconsious :( .

Someone better levitate (or teleport though thats much harder) Marcus and Buffy out of that creater, keeping the sand up won't work. They could have melted the sand and then moved it, huge piece of glass I think you would get then :D .

That beast was 500 *metres* long ? That's feckin HUGE.

At the moment the objectives of the order seem to be compatible with what the Scoobies do/want. I wonder when thats going to change and what will happen. Still not sure if that Order is there to do good or evil. Likely they themselves think of it as 'good', but if it involves manipulating/hurting Willow or Tara... well that just can't be good can it ?

Balance Point update

:wave

Glad you liked the battle scene, it was one of my favorite scenes to write, and the longest scene I've ever written in one go. Now then, on with the show...

************************************

“Come on, you have to wake up!”

Marcus could feel something shaking him. As consciousness returned he felt a stabbing pain in his side, but that was less annoying than the insistent shaking, and the voice shouting in his ear.

“Wake up!”

He opened his eyes to see a face close to his. As he managed to focus he saw it was the Slayer’s sister. She had grabbed him by his shirt and was still shaking him.

“Get off” he said irritably, shaking her hand off and sitting up. The pain in his side doubled, and he groaned, wondering if he had broken a rib. The pain reminded him that they were in the middle of a battle.

“You have to cast the levitation spell again!” Dawn shouted in his ear. “Willow can’t hold it!”

Marcus looked at where she pointed. The red headed sensitive stood there, hand out stretched, supporting the sand more by strength of will than anything else. He could see the strain and agony on her face. If the sensitive is damaged… he thought, considering the unpleasant consequences if the Order failed its mission. He tried to stand, but the pain was too great. He remembered now, the tentacle had hit him hard. “Help me up!” he demanded. Dawn grabbed his arm, trying to support as much of his weight as she could. Even as he staggered upright, he saw Willow collapse. He saw Saul try and re-establish the spell, even as he tried, but he knew they would both fail. The sand came crashing down, most of it falling in to the crater from which it had come. A huge cloud of sand grains drifted up, blocking vision and stinging people’s eyes.

Dawn dropped the injured wizard, letting him fall to his hands and knees. He groaned through gritted teeth, then watched as she ran to where the crater had been. “Buffy!” she screamed. The four warriors dropped to their knees where the edge had been, and began digging with their hands.

A hand thrust up from the sand. Nadia grabbed it and began pulling, even as the other warriors began digging around it. The Slayer’s head burst from the ground, spluttering and spitting out sand. She placed one hand on the ground for balance, and pulled the other, revealing a hand she held tightly. Mike’s head also broke free, gasping for air. The warriors took their arms and pulled them both free.

“Buffy!” Dawn yelled, flinging her arms around her sister. Buffy put one arm around her shoulders, then pulled her along with her as they walked towards the vans.

“Buffy, you’re ok?” Xander asked from where he crouched by Willow.

“Ah, digging yourself out of the ground, its no big once you get used to it.” She rushed forward when she saw Willow was unconscious. “What happened? Is she ok?”

“She’s breathing and her pulse is strong” Tara told her. Her voice was full of relief, but she had to wipe away a few tears. “ She tried to keep the sand up, but she hasn’t used magic that powerful since…” She tailed off, not want to mention Willow’s addiction. She was sitting on the ground, Willow’s head supported on her lap. She began stroking her lover’s hair as Saul spoke up.

“She’s just sleeping now. Using magic has exhausted her, physically and mentally, but barring a few headaches, I think she’ll be fine.” The wizard smiled, but his expression was troubled.

“We should get her in the van” Mike said as he walked over, his arm around Nadia’s shoulder, letting her help support his weight. Two of the warriors bent to pick Willow up. Tara stiffened and put her arms around Willow’s shoulders protectively.

“We’ll be careful” one of the soldiers said, and Tara nodded, then followed then as they carried her lover to the van. She climbed in and resumed her position as Willow’s pillow, again stroking her hair.

Buffy watched her friends get in the van, then watched as the other female warrior helped Marcus walk to the other. The wizard was clutching his side and was having trouble supporting his own weight. She rubbed her face, then ran a hand through her hair. “Oh man, I’m gonna have sand in my hair for a week.”

“You seem to have fared a lot better than me” Mike said with a grin. He was limping and clutched one arm against his chest, injuries from falling down the side of the behemoth. He was sure he was covered in bruises from being buried in sand.

“It takes a lot to bruise a Slayer” Buffy said. “But at least you don’t have the hair problem.” She gestured at Mike’s close cropped hair.

“Um, not to be picky or anything” Xander said, pointing, “but I think people are gonna know we were here.” The others looked and saw the huge area of churned up sand. “And if they dig down there, there’s gonna be a lot of awkward questions.”

“That’s one problem that’s easily dealt with” Saul said. He pressed his hands together, centring his power, then stretched out his hand. The sand began to move as if blown by a strong wind. The piles of sand collapsed in to depressions, and soon the ground was mostly level. Just plain, uninteresting desert.

“We should leave soon” Mike said. “The police will be beginning their search.”

                ********************

Willow opened her eyes to see Tara’s upside down face staring down at her. Slightly disconcerted, she tried to sit up but found she didn’t have the energy. She rested her head back on Tara’s lap with a sigh.

“Hey” Tara said quietly. “How do you feel?”

“Feel me and find out” Willow replied with a grin, then she winced and raised a hand to her temple. “Actually, feelin a little woozy. Guess I’m not ready for the big time magics.” She stiffened as the memories of the seconds before she fainted reached the surface. “Buffy, is she ok? I couldn’t hold the sand, it was too much…”

“She’s fine” Tara told her. “She and Mike had almost got to the top when the sand fell, the soldier guys dug them out. And don’t put yourself down” she said, stroking Willow’s temples. “What you did, it was amazing.”

“Well, I just, I mean, someone had to hold up the sand, and I was the only one who could try, and failing wasn’t an option, so I just…”

“So you just did it” Tara said with one of her half-smiles. “But I think you need some more practise before you use that much magic again.”

Willow closed her eyes. The throbbing in her head was rapidly growing in to a full blown migraine. “No arguments here. This was kind of a spur of the moment thing, ya know.”

Tara continued massaging Willow’s temples. Her lover had missed the most important point. “I know. You cast a spell you were totally unprepared for, using levels of magic you haven’t used in a long time. And you didn’t take any shortcuts. You didn’t use dark magic.”

Willow forced herself to sit up, blinking as lights flashed in front of her eyes. “It… never occurred to me to use it” she said slowly. It had always been her greatest fear that if she used magic again, she would succumb to the knowledge that dark magic could do the job quicker and more easily, in the short term at least. As for the long term consequences, she hadn’t considered those last time…

Tara was grinning like a Cheshire cat. She had always known that the person Willow had to work hardest to convince was herself. And with proof that she could use strong magic without being tempted to misuse it, she hoped Willow’s doubts would be dispelled. “I’m so proud of you” she said as Willow moved round next to her and laid her head on her shoulder. “We’ll have you back to full witchy goodness in no time.” She put her arm round Willow’s shoulders.

“Sounds good” Willow said a little sleepily. She moved her head so she could kiss Tara’s neck, then moved back to a comfortable position and closed her eyes.

                ********************

“Dawn, c’mon” Buffy called from inside the first van. She and Xander already sat inside, while Mike and one of the soldiers climbed in to the front seats. Dawn climbed in the the side door, which Xander slammed shut.

“But I wanna go with Willow and Tara” she complained. The two women were still in the second van.

“You heard what Mike said, the other van is for the injured, Willow and Marcus” Buffy told her.

Dawn grumbled to herself, but sat against the side of the van next to her sister. She turned and looked out through the windscreen, the sun was much higher in the sky now than when they had arrived. “The police’ll be here soon, to do their search. And they won’t find anything. Those kids, the policemen, no one’ll ever know that they were eaten by a big monster. Their families will never know what happened to them.”

Buffy put her arm around her sister’s shoulders. “I know, and it sucks. But no one else is gonna get eaten by it. That’s the best we can do.”

Dawn sighed and lay her head against Buffy’s shoulder. “I know” she said quietly as the engine started and the van pulled away.

                ********************

Tara held on tightly to Willow as the van drove bumpily over the desert. Though tired, the redhead was unable to sleep with the van jerking up and down every few seconds, and sat with her head on Tara’s shoulder, her expression slightly glazed with exhaustion. They were both watching Saul, who sat at the back of the van with the back doors open. His hand was stretched out, using magic to erase the van’s tire tracks. As the vans finally turned on to the road, he slammed the doors shut and moved up to where the others were sitting.

It was a little cramped, with Willow, Tara, Saul and Marcus in the back. The younger wizard’s ribs had turned out to be heavily bruised, but unbroken, and he had taken strong painkillers from the warrior’s first aid kit. He slept against one side of the van, his spread out form taking up the most room. Nadia was driving, and two other warriors sat with her in the front. Saul glanced at them as if making sure they couldn’t hear, then turned to the two women. “May I ask a personal question?” he asked.

“Um, you can ask” Tara said, a little worried by what he might want to know. But after casting together, she had to respect his determination in fighting demons. And his concern for the other Order members had been obvious.

“We might not answer through” Willow added.

“Fair enough” the wizard said. “You are both witches?” the women nodded. “But, Willow, back at the warehouse you said you could not perform magic. Then you undoubtedly saved Buffy and Michael’s lives when you took over the levitation spell, despite the…” he paused. “Difficulties you had.”

“Um, that’s a good question” Willow said a little nervously. She felt slightly calmer as she felt Tara’s hand slip in to hers. She didn’t like talking about this, but she had realised long ago that the first step in solving a problem was to admit you had one. “I used to be a witch, quite a good one.” That was an understatement, both Giles and Tara had commented on how powerful she was. Few people could perform a resurrection. But power and ability had only led to temptation. “I got addicted, to dark magic. I refused to admit I had a problem, even when I hurt the most important person in my life.” She faltered, but continued when she felt Tara squeeze her hand reassuringly. “I even used dark magic recreationally, for no reason other than to get high.” She took a deep breath, then continued. “Eventually I admitted I had a problem, and I stopped using magic. Then a few months ago I had to use magic to save Buffy’s life. Since then I’ve been learning to use magic again, without getting tempted by dark magic.” She leaned back against Tara, tired after her monologue, but smiled as her girlfriend kissed her on the forehead.

“I’m impressed” Saul said. “It takes a great deal of strength to recover from dark magic addiction, and for most the only way is life long abstinence from any magic. Very few are ever able to use magic again.”

“Um, I have a question” Tara said. “How did you know we were witches?”

“I could sense it, your ability to use magic” the wizard replied. Which was partly true. There was no reason to tell them about the information Omi had collected about all the Slayer’s people.

“I can sense something about you, too” Willow said. She remembered the first time she had met the Order. “Not that you’re magic users, something else.” She frowned, trying to find the words. “You’re all so confident in your abilities. I can’t imagine any Order magic users becoming magic addicts.”

Saul smiled. “I never realised other people noticed it. I hope it doesn’t make us seem arrogant.” Willow shook her head quickly. “Its part of our training. We know we are good at what we do, so what’s the point of self-doubt? A lack of faith in ourselves can only hurt us.”

Willow thought back to all the times in her life that she had doubted herself. It had only been in college that she had really developed self-confidence, and that had been a false image based on her use of magic.

“And you’re right” Saul continued. “Few magic users in the Order have become addicted. We have strict training and disciplines specifically to prevent it.” He looked thoughtful for a moment. “I have some books on the subject, various exercises and meditations to help prevent against any temptation to misuse magic. I could lend you them, if you like?”

Willow glanced at Tara, she knew her lover had put a great deal of effort in to researching ways to help her relearn magic, and she didn’t want to offend her by asking for help from someone else.

“Thank you” Tara said. “I’m sure they’ll be very helpful.”

“Since we’re all with the questions” Willow said, “what are those crystals you use? You use them to focus your senses, right?”

“They’re perfectly ordinary crystals, we just enchant them” Saul told her. “Yes, they allow us to sense things over greater distances than our normal senses could.”

“Like vamps and demons? Maybe Tara and I could borrow them sometime, or get our own?” Willow perked up at the idea of a new way she could help Buffy.

“Ah, the crystals we use are attuned to a specific wizard, only I can use my crystal, and only Marcus can use his. But I can see about getting you your own.” Again, what he told them was true, the crystals were only useful in the hands of their owners. Also, each crystal could only be used to sense one particular thing. It would do no good if Tara and Willow found that Marcus and Saul’s crystals were attuned to sense them.

“So, these books, they deal with meditations and the like?” Tara asked, now interested. Her first reaction had been to accept the books out of politeness, but it occurred to her that other philosophies on the use of magic could be useful, especially if Saul’s claims about Order members rarely becoming addicted were true.

“Yes, and magical exercises. They also deal with the philosophy of the Order, and the use of magic” Saul replied. Willow tried to follow the conversation, but the smoother movement of the van on the road was lulling her back to sleep. She closed her eyes as she lost her battle with exhaustion. Saul continued, not yet realising that half his audience was now asleep. “Some of our rules are very strict. We believe the only way to resist temptation is to forbid any unnecessary use of magic, and an absolute prohibition on its use for recreational purposes.”

                ********************

Marcus limped across the warehouse, went to his curtained off sleeping area and slumped on the bed. What a day! As if being injured by the creature, then dropped by the Summer’s girl hadn’t been enough, he’d had to endure the teenager’s apologies when they returned to the warehouse. She had repeatedly explained that her concern for her sister had caused her to forget about his injuries. Then the Slayer and her friends had begun excited retellings of the morning’s events, despite the fact they had all been there.

Marcus had never had much time for other people, his career was the most important thing in his life. He had joined the Order, not because he believed in the fight against chaos, but because it seemed to offer a quick route to power for someone of his abilities. He had expected to be leader of a group by now, not the junior wizard in a group led by a soldier! When this mission was complete he would request a transfer to another group.

He shifted, and grimaced as the pain in his side flared. He doubted he’d be able to sleep again without painkillers, another annoyance. He could feel his temper rising. Still, he knew the perfect way to relieve tension. Gritting his teeth against the pain, he rolled on to his good side, and pulled a bag from beneath the bed. Making sure no one was about to enter his sleeping area, he felt in the bottom for the secret compartment, then withdrew a small, black crystal. He quickly replaced the bag and lay on his back. The use of these crystals was forbidden in the Order, but he was under a great deal of pressure, and besides, he hadn’t experienced any of the side effects the senior members warned about. It would probably help control the pain of his injury too.

He snapped the crystal in two, then held the pieces against his forehead. The crystal fragments drained from black to clear as the dark magic stored within them soaked in to Marcus. He smiled lazily, he already felt warm and contented. The pain in his side and the pointless rambling of those annoying children were distant memories as the narcotic effects of the crystal took hold. He let out a slight giggle as he imagined the ridiculous boy and that annoying girl being eaten by the behemoth. His eyelids slid shut over his now jet-black eyes, and Marcus lay back to enjoy his well-earned rest.

I think it was really important that Tara tell Willow of her pride at Willow being able to control the magic. She's right though, the person who needed convincing most was Willow herself.

Willow's natural curiosity led her to ask about the crystals, but Saul was able to deflect. Eventually though he'll run out of excuses and will have to tell Willow and Tara why the Order is so interested in them.

About the sig; convert it to ezCode, sig seems simple enough.

Glad Willow is alright, and Tara is righfully proud of her. Indeed the most difficult person to convince is Willow herself, hopefully this helped.

So Marcus is a dark magic user..interesting. I would have thought that those wounds could be healed by using white magic easily enough, so I wondered why they didn't do that. (still wonder btw:) )

Was Willow around when Marcus broke that crystal ? If so, she might be able to sense the use of dark magic. Marcus better stay far away from Willow with his evil crystals, Willow is clean now and she work hard for it.

My current theory on the Order is that they want/need Willow and Tara to do something for them. Likely some prophecy. What I don't know is if they intend to kindly ASK them to cooperate or just intend to TAKE whatever they need.

Now what would happen if someone happened to step on Marcus' backpack ? Results wouldn't be pretty I think.

Marcus is a risk which must be dealt with, one way or the other. I'm beginning to like Saul (Omni is of my list due to her mindscanning Tara), don't know if thats wise though.

Balance Point update

Early morning sunlight shone through the window on to two sleeping forms. Willow lay on her side with Tara behind her, the blonde’s arm curled around her. Willow’s eyes flicked open, and she smiled widely when she saw her pillow was spotless. “No night-time nose-bleeds” she said softly to herself.

“Huh?” Tara said, waking up. “Um, did you say something?” She was still half asleep, and her face was buried in Willow’s hair, so her words came out muffled.

Willow rolled over to face her girlfriend, making sure that Tara’s arm stayed wrapped around her. “No nose bleed last night” she repeated. Several times in the last week she had woken to find dried blood on her pillow.

Tara leaned forward and kissed her nose. “Well good. How’s your head this morning?”

Willow rubbed her temple. “A little sore, but better than it was.”

“You want pain killers?” Tara asked worriedly.

“No, no, its not that bad, really” Willow reassured her. Tara kissed her on the forehead, then sat up. “Hey, where’d my snuggles go?” Willow pouted.

“Breakfast in bed time” Tara said, getting up. “What do you want?”

“Hey, its not that I mind all the pampering, but I thought, maybe, I could make breakfast today. Or at least get out of bed.”

“You’re exaggerating” Tara said, smiling. Willow hadn’t been bed ridden the last week, but Tara had insisted on looking after her.

“I know” Willow said, grinning back. “But I feel fine. You don’t have to do everything for me.”

“I know you’re capable” Tara said. “But I worry, and I guess I overcompensate a little. Besides, I like taking care of you.”

“I know, but now its my turn” Willow said, getting out of bed. “Now get back in to bed” she ordered.

“Yes ma’am” Tara said, recognising the Resolve Face. She scooted back under the covers. “So, um breakfast?”

“Yes” Willow said. “I’ll make it.”

“Do we still get to eat it in bed?”

Willow grinned. “Oh, definitely.”

                ********************

It was Saturday, and neither woman had anything important to do. After lunch, they went for a walk through the park. “Your head any better, sweetie?” Tara asked.

“Much” Willow replied. “You know, I always thought ‘fresh air’ was a conspiracy between parents to get their kids out the house. ‘You’ve been on that computer all day, go and get some fresh air’” she said in a whining, nagging tone. “I couldn’t count how many times my mom said that to me. And now it turns out fresh air’s actually good for you.”

“Who’d have thought it” Tara said, grinning. Not for the first time, she wished she known Willow when she was growing up. In her imagination she pictured a curious redhead, coming up with theories for everything in the world she didn’t understand. Still, she was more than happy with adult-Willow.

“Um, hi” a voice said behind them. They turned to see Omi standing behind them. “Out for a walk?”

“Yeah, you too?” Tara said slowly.

“Yeah, there really isn’t that much to do around here, is there?” the teen said. “So, um, that big tentacled thing, huh?”

“Yeah, all big and tentacly” Willow said. There was an awkward silence.

“So, I’ll, uh, see you around” Omi said, backing away.

“Bye” Tara called as she turned around and walked away. “That’s the second time she’s ‘bumped in’ to me” she said to Willow as they continued walking.

“You think it was deliberate?” Willow asked. “I mean, there aren’t that many things for a teen to do here, and this is the only place where its nice to walk.”

“Hmm, maybe” Tara said. As she thought about it, it did seem unlikely that Omi would just hang around the park on the off chance of meeting them. Besides, they had no reason to be suspicious of the Order, they had pretty much proved their good intentions when they fought the behemoth. “And I guess being the only one her age in the Order, she must get pretty lonely” she added, remembering that Omi had told her the main reason she went walking was because the other Order members were too busy to talk to her.

“Yeah, she kinda reminded me of me, with the lame conversation starter and all” Willow said. She frowned, troubled as memories of her own teenage years floated to the surface. “And we ignored her. How could we be so insensitive? I mean, she doesn’t know anybody here, she trys to be friendly and we just ignore her.” As she relived some of the more unpleasant times, she felt a surge of guilt. “What’s next, laughing at her in the corridor and stealing her lunch money?”

“Willow, calm down” Tara said. Her own teenaged years hadn’t been much fun, and she was also starting to feel for the young Order member. She remembered times she had tried to strike up a conversation with other, more popular people, only to be ignored, or worse, laughed at. “Maybe, maybe we could hang with her, y’know, us and Dawn. We could show her the sites of Sunnydale. I mean, it does seem like the Order are staying.”

“Maybe” Willow agreed. “I mean, we know where she lives.”

“In a warehouse” Tara said. “And I thought my old bedroom was crappy.”

                ********************

Buffy stood in the living room doorway, and watched the women on the couch. Tara sat in the middle, with Willow and Dawn either side. Will had her arms wrapped around one of Tara’s, and Dawn rested her head on the blonde’s shoulder. “I’m going to patrol” she called out.

“Have fun” Willow said without turning.

“Take care” Tara said, turning round and flashing the Slayer a quick half smile.

“Have you got gloves?” Dawn asked. “It looks cold out.”

“Um, no, my last pair got covered in demon blood and, you know, entrails” Buffy said. “And that’s a hard stain to shift.”

“You can borrow mine” Dawn said. “They’re in my jacket pockets.”

Smiling slightly, Buffy went to the hall where several jackets were hanging, and took the gloves from Dawn’s. She was going out to face the evil undead, and her sister was worried about her catching cold. “I’ll see you all tomorrow” she said. There was a chorus of byes from the couch, then she stepped out and shut the door behind her.

Tara turned and looked down at Dawn, whose head was back on her shoulder. “Ok, homework time.”

“Homework? But its Saturday night” Dawn whined.

“You’ve got things that have to be done by Monday?” Tara asked. The teen’s face fell. “Then you can start them now. Do a few hours, then we can hang.” Dawn pouted.

“Its no use making that face” Willow said, mock-serious. “Homework time, missy.”

“Ok, ok” Dawn said, standing. “But we’re hanging later?”

“Check, quality Dawnie time when you’re done” Tara said. The teen smiled, then turned and went upstairs. “Are you feeling better now?” she asked, turning to Willow.

The redhead lifted her head from Tara’s shoulder and turned to face her. “Good as new” she said, smiling. “Headache free.”

“You wanna take a look at the book Saul lent us?” Tara asked. The wizard had given them the book shortly after their fight with the behemoth, but they had decided to postpone trying anything from it until Willow had recovered from her magic use.

“Sure” Willow said. She was curious about what was in the book, and now she knew she could resist dark magic, she was eager to get back to full strength again.

They went to their room and took the book down from the shelf. They both sat on the bed, leaning against the headboard with the book in front of them. It was thick, and looked old, but its leather cover still looked in good condition. “Order In Magic” Tara said, reading the title. “I guess its only natural the Order wizards would always want to be in control of their magic, letting it control them would be too chaotic.”

They quickly read through the introduction, it simply explained the importance of staying in control of magic, and not misusing it, and turned to the first chapter. “Meditation” Willow read out loud “can be useful in focussing the mind before attempting to use magic.” After that there were a number of suggested methods. Most seemed to be for novice wizards casting their first spells, but on the second page they found one about resisting dark magic.

After reading through the chapter, Tara shifted round so that she was now sitting opposite Willow, and pulled the book in front of her. “Close your eyes” she said. “Ok. Focus on slowing your breathing.” She waited until Willow’s breathing was slow and steady. “Now empty your mind.”

Willow tried to clear her thoughts. The only sound in the room was Tara’s voice. She’d always thought Tara had a sexy voice… a small smile twisted the corners of her mouth up.

“I said empty your mind” Tara said.

A little guiltily, Willow stopped smiling and tried to stop thinking.

“Magic is power” Tara read. “With power comes responsibility. To lose control of magic is to let it control you. To lose control of magic is to lose everything.”

Willow winced, but she managed to keep calm. She had indeed lost everything, and it was only by turning from dark magic that Tara had come back to her.

“Magic is to be respected” Tara continued. “It is not a tool, to be used as you see fit.”

Without even realising it, Willow nodded. This was similar to the Wiccan attitude to magic, that Tara had explained to her. Still, hearing it again encouraged her. This time she was listening to the words, rather than worrying about whether she was strong enough.

Tara reached out and took Willow’s hands. They sat together in silence for a few minutes, each drawing calm from the other. Willow began to smile, she could feel the doubts she’d harboured for months slipping away.

Tara opened her eyes. “Feel better?” she asked. Willow nodded as she opened her eyes. “Wanna do a spell?” As long as the magic didn’t alter the natural order, and wasn’t being used for selfish reasons, it was ok to cast a spell to practise.

“Sure” Willow said. “What shall we do, the pencil again?”

Tara laughed. “You held up hundreds of tons of sand. I think we can assume you can float a pencil. Besides, I thought we could do something else.” She stepped off the bed, and crossed to the chest of drawers. Opening the top one, she took out a rose she had bought the day before, when she’d decided this should be the first spell she and Willow attempted.

Willow grinned as she remembered the first spell she and Tara had cast together. “The rose!” she said.

Tara smiled as she climbed back on the bed and placed the rose between them. “This should be a good test of your abilities, its about skill rather than just power.” Dark magic was just the opposite, ignoring details and using as much power as possible to smash aside any obstacle. “And besides” she said, grinning, “it should be very pretty.”

They joined hands, and soon had the rose floating several feet above them. “Ready?” Tara asked.

“Ready.”

Synchronising minds was normally very difficult. When they had first tried this spell, Tara had been surprised by how easily she and Willow had been able to work together. If it hadn’t been for the interference of powerful magics unleashed on Giles by Ethan Rayne, the spell would have worked. If she hadn’t known already, it would have convinced her that they already shared a connection.

Nearly three years later, that connection had only become stronger. Even their troubles last year hadn’t broken it, and their reunion had made it all the stronger. It took only seconds for them to synchronise their thoughts. A single petal detached from the rose and floated away, falling in slow motion. A second petal followed it, then a third. Both women looked up and smiled. One by one each petal broke loose from the flower and floated gently down to the bed. Soon they were surrounded by falling petals.

“I knew it would be pret…” Willow said, but her words were swallowed as Tara leaned forward and kissed her. Willow surrendered as her lover gently pushed her down on to the rose petal strewn bed, never once breaking the kiss.

Still floating above them, the bare rose-stem began to spin in the air.

Stake in hand, Buffy walked through the dark cemetery. Dawn’s gloves were still in her pockets, she’d found that they stopped her getting a firm grip on her stake. It was cold, but being the Slayer, she was more resistant to it than most. She smiled happily as she thought about Dawn, Willow and Tara at home. After the mess of last year, it was good to have things back the way they should be. Willow and Dawn’s problems had obviously increased tensions at home, but Buffy had never realised how much Tara leaving would affect them all. In the weeks between her resurrection and Tara leaving, she had failed to realise how much the blonde witch had become part of their lives. Now it seemed as if she’d always belonged there.

Sounds of struggling shook Buffy from her thoughts. Flattening herself against a crypt, she crept to the edge, then peered round it. A vampire was thrown past her, narrowly missing her head, and crashed on to the ground. As it stood up again, a crossbow bolt pierced its chest, and it exploded in to dust. With a sigh, Buffy stepped in to the open and watched as the Order warriors finished two more vamps. “Nice work” she called, a little put out. At this rate the demons would be more scared of the Order than they were of her. The soldiers turned to face her. “I’ll, ah, go and patrol on the other side of town. I can see you guys have things covered here.” She turned to go.

Nadia stepped forward. “Perhaps…?” Buffy turned at the sound of her voice. “Perhaps you could patrol with us? The vampires seem to be out in strength tonight, and we could use your skills.”

“Well, my skills are pretty skilful” Buffy said, smiling. She was cut off by a growl. Five vampires were walking towards them. One of the warriors shouted, and Buffy turned to see six more coming from the other direction. She turned in a slow circle, and saw that more were closing in to completely encircle her and the soldiers. “Is there a party tonight?” she called out. “Hey, I’m sure my invite’s in the mail.” The vampires came closer. “Any plans?” she whispered to Nadia.

“Kill them all?”

“Good plan” Buffy said, then leapt at the nearest vamp, her stake finding its heart. She turned for another, and saw that all the warriors had leapt in to battle. Turning her attention back to the job in hand, she rammed the stake in to a second vampire.

:bounce Update!

Wonderful, I enjoyed the "rose" spell again, and thought it was most appropriate they do that one together.

Looks like The Order is starting to soften a bit, but Michael still worries me.

I know our girls mean well intending to spend more time with Omi, but it has me all concerned now. I'd much prefer the Order come clean with them and tell them why they're so interested in them.

Wonderful that the first spell they tried was the floating rose one. Lovely!

Thanks!

Balance Point update

Postby chronic » Thu Dec 12, 2002 5:36 am

Sorry its been so long between posts, I tried to post at least one a week, and ended up posting one every 2/3 weeks. The real world's been intruding again. On the plus side, I've finally joined the ranks of the nine-to-fivers, after doing shift work for what seems like forever. Now I just have to convince my body that the day doesn't start at noon...

barnabasvamp:- Apart from being the first spell Willow and Tara did together (not counting moving the vending machine in ‘Hush’) the floating rose is my second favourite spell they did (Favourite is the flaming ‘O’ in ‘Who Are You’ :thud ) so I thought it was time for them to do it properly. And I remember the first time I saw the ep I liked that Willow brought Tara a rose the first time they met up ;)

Grimlock72:- How trustworthy is Omi? Well, hopefully that’ll be answered in this update :) . As for what the Order’s mission is, well, all will be revealed soon…

I hated the addict-Willow storyline too, which is pretty much why I’m writing this. I understood the reasons behind Will misusing her power, but then the story degenerated in to yet another round of hurt the lesbian… and now in season 7 she seems pretty much back to normal, doing magic again and barely mentioning Tara’s name, WTF!!! :rage Ahem, sorry, rant over. But my point is it seemed to me the only way Willow could ever recover from her addiction would be to work at it herself, with Tara’s help.

Conveniently sized vampire gangs? :) Well, yeah, monsters do tend to come in handy, easily-slayed groups, but you never know when a big bad’s gonna show up…

mollyig:- Willow and Tara are always thinking of other people, but could it be about to get them in trouble? Well, read on…

“So, I kicked this vamp, and then when he tried to get up, Nadia chopped his head off!” Buffy said excitedly. “Then Tom, that’s one of the Order guys, picked up a vamp with one hand and threw it at the others. And by then the vamps were trying to run away, but they didn’t get far before…” she mimed a staking, “poof!”

Dawn grinned at her sister’s enthusiastic retelling of the tale. The other member of the audience seemed less enthralled.

“That’s a good story to tell the grandkids” Xander said. “What with all the violence and the… violence.” He had come over on his lunch break, and now sat between the Summers girls on the couch, his lunch balanced on his knees. “So, you’ve been patrolling with these Order guys a lot?”

“Nearly every night this week” Buffy said. “But its been pretty quiet since we wiped out that vampire gang. Seems like the demons have gone to ground.”

“They’ve finally learned some respect” Dawn said, smiling.

“It must be nice to have some professionals with you on patrol” Xander said.

“Yeah, its…” Buffy stopped as she picked up the faint note of bitterness in the carpenter’s voice. “Not that you guys aren’t helpful when you come with me.”

“Yeah, but you have to admit, you like having trained soldiers patrolling with you, rather than...” he gestured at himself.

Buffy leaned forward. She could see Xander was having another bout of feeling sorry for himself, presumably because Anya still refused to speak to him. And the fact that she was telling him a week old story showed how little time they’d spent together recently. “Ok, yes, the Order guys know what they’re doing, and its good to fight with them, but they will never replace my friends. Ok?”

Xander nodded. “Ok.” Deep down he knew it was ridiculous to feel jealous of the Order, but still… he decided to change the topic. “So, you guys wanna hang tonight? Pizza goodness and video fun?”

“I’m busy, sorry” Buffy said.

“The Order?” Xander asked.

“No. Ok, yes, but its important. They’ve found a big demon nest, and they asked me to come with” Buffy told him.

They all turned as Willow and Tara came down the stairs and walked in. “Hey Xander” Willow said, giving him a small wave.

“Guys, pizza and a movie tonight?” the Carpenter asked.

“Ooh, sorry, we’re having a girlie night tonight” Tara said.

Xander frowned. “Isn’t every night a girlie night for you two?”

“Xander!” Willow said, mock-stern. “We’re havin’ a girl’s night out.”

“Yeah, we invited Omi, from the Order, we thought she must get pretty lonely being the only one her age” Tara explained. They had gone to the warehouse the day before, to ask Saul about some of the more advanced exercises described in his book, and had taken the opportunity to invite the teenager out with them. Tara smiled as she remembered the teen’s smile as she agreed to meet them.

“Well Dawnster, looks like its just you and me” Xander said.

“Fraid not” Dawn replied. “I’m in on the girlie action.” She blushed. “Uh, you know what I mean.”

“Sorry Xand” Buffy said. “Another time, ok?”

“Sure” the carpenter said, a little despondently. “Another time.”

                ********************

“Wow, nice swords” Buffy said as she walked in to the warehouse. The warriors were checking and cleaning their weapons, and looked up as the Slayer walked in. Nadia held her sword to the light, checking the blade for imperfections. Buffy noticed that the weapon bore no decoration, either on the blade or the hilt, and seemed to be brand new. She took out the sword she had been carrying under her coat and removed the scabbard, it was one of the swords she had taken from the Knights of Byzantium, after they were wiped out by Glory, and was a complete contrast to the Order’s functional weapons. The blade was inscribed with runes and symbols, and the hilt was highly decorated.

“Yours too” Nadia said. “What other weapons have you brought?”

“Well, you said these things aren’t vamps, so stakes and holy water are no use, but I brought this” Buffy said, taking her crossbow from out of her bag.

Nadia frowned. “Interesting choice” she said. She picked up a handgun and began checking it. “We have several firearms, if you’d like to borrow one.”

Buffy shook her head. “Oh, I really don’t think so, I mean I… don’t do guns.”

“Really? Why not?” the soldier asked.

“They just freak me out a little, like they’re, oh, I don’t know, like they’re… evil, I guess.” She shrugged at her inability to put her thoughts in to words.

“A gun can’t be evil” Nadia said. “The person pulling the trigger, maybe, but not the gun. No weapon can be evil if it is used to fight evil.”

“That’s like saying anything is justified if your intentions are good” Buffy said. “Besides, the thing about guns is… they’re too easy. Killing something with a sword, it takes skill, and strength, and there’s blood and guts and you know you’ve just taken a life. Killing with a gun is just ‘point and pull the trigger’. You could do it without even thinking about what you’re doing. I know we have to kill to save people, but it should never be done without thinking. It should never be easy.”

Nadia just shrugged. She’d always been taught that any action was justified if it furthered the cause of order. And if you had to kill someone or something, surely the faster and more easily it could be done, the better? But she said nothing, she didn’t want to argue with her new ally, especially before they went in to battle.

“Do you really think its wise to involve the Slayer?” Marcus asked, as he stared at Buffy from the other side of the warehouse.

“She’s a valuable ally” Michael said. “Our battle in the desert showed that.” He hadn’t forgotten that if it weren’t for Buffy and her friends, he would have been buried under tons of sand.

“And as for involving ourselves in these petty fights…” the wizard went on.

“Petty?” Saul asked. “If we hadn’t stopped the behemoth, it would have eaten the town, us included.”

“Granted” Marcus said. “But tonight’s little excursion, a nest of N’Gandt Demons? This is beneath us. We should be concentrating on our mission.”

“Our mission” Mike said sternly “is to fight chaos in all its forms. That includes demons.”

“Our mission” Marcus said angrily “is to restore order to the universe. We’ve been in this wretched town for over a month! We should have secured the Sensitives, interrogated them…”

“Willow and Tara will help us of their own free will, I’m sure of it” Saul said. “As will their friends.”

“And if they refuse?”

Mike crossed his arms. “They won’t.” He turned, angry with Marcus for arguing, and angry with himself because he knew the wizard was right, if the Sensitives refused to help, he would have to force them. He shook his head to banish such thoughts. The Slayer worked with them already. Surely when the Balance Point came, they would be more than willing to help the Order?

He looked up at Saul. “You are prepared?” The wizard nodded. “Nadia?” Mike called. The warrior turned to face him. “Buffy?” Are you ready?” They both nodded. “Then lets go.”

                ********************

“You sure you don’t want anything?” Willow asked, setting the tray of fast food down on the table.

Tara shook her head, looking slightly horrified at the pile of fries and burgers. “I’m good, really” she said.

“You know they’re not really meat” Dawn said, helping herself to a burger and her extra-super-size milkshake. “Its just mashed up vegetables and meat flavouring.”

“When I said you should eat some vegetables every day, this is not what I meant” Tara said, mock-sternly.

“Assorted veg” Dawn said, waving her burger, “and potato” she went on, taking a handful of fries. “A perfectly healthy meal.” Tara rolled her eyes and sighed.

Willow grinned at the teen’s teasing, then looked around the neon lit fast food restaurant. “I’m so glad Buffy’s getting out of here” she said. The others nodded.

“When is she leaving?” Tara asked.

“Her last shift’s next week sometime” Dawn said. “She gave her notice, like, 30 seconds after she got her new job.” She grinned, pleased that her sister would soon have a job she could actually enjoy. She took another bite of burger; despite her and Tara’s joking, this was the first time she’d eaten fast food since the time last year when it had been part of her regular diet. The return of Tara’s cooking had been welcomed by everyone. “So, what time’s Omi showing up?”

“Soon” Tara said, glancing at her watch.

“Yeah, we thought we’d eat, then go see a mov… hey!” Willow broke off as Tara took a handful of her fries. “And what happened to “fast food is so bad for you’?”

Tara grinned as she munched her stolen fries. “Sweetie, everybody knows food has no calories if its someone else’s.”

Willow put her elbows on the table and began drumming her fingertips together. “I think someone’s going to have to be punished” she said.

Tara’s grin grew even wider. “Well, we’ll have to do something to burn off all these calories” she said.

“Guys, your double entendres are becoming single” Dawn said. The two women stopped talking, but they held hands under the table and made eyes at each other. Dawn grinned, she had only been teasing. In truth she loved that her friends were in love.

“Hey Omi!” Willow called as she saw the girl walk in. She turned as she heard her name, then walked over and dropped into the empty seat next to Dawn. “Hi.”

“We already ordered” Willow said. “We didn’t know what you liked, but we figured all teens like junk food.” She waved at the tray. Omi grinned and took a carton of fries and a still-wrapped burger.

“So, how was your day?” Tara asked.

Omi shrugged. “I had lessons with Saul, then I had to study some books. The others have been preparing all day to attack that demon nest.”

“Saul’s your teacher?” Dawn asked.

“Yeah, we move around a lot, so its not practical for me to go to school.” She shrugged. “He’s pretty cool, and he teaches me things you’d never learn in school.” She smiled as she thought of some of the minor spells he’d taught her.

“You don’t have to go to school, and your tutor is a wizard” Dawn said. “I wanna join the Order.” The others smiled. “Or maybe I could ditch school, and you two could teach me spells instead?”

“No” Willow and Tara said together.

Omi laughed as Dawn pouted, then looked down shyly. “Um, I was really glad when you invited me out” she said. “I mean, the others are great people, but they’re all so busy. Plus they’re kinda old.” Tara grinned. Omi was younger than all of them, but seeing as she spent all her time with people in their late twenties and older, two 21 year olds and a 16 year old must seem pretty close to her age.

They all stared at Dawn as she made a loud slurping noise. “No, there is no way you can have finished that shake!” Willow protested.

Dawn slurped as she finished the last of it, then looked up. “All gone” she said. The teen had finished her food as well.

“Where does it all go?” Willow asked. She leaned across the table and poked Dawn in the belly. “Is there a portal to a demon dimension in there or something?”

“Hey!” Dawn protested, giggling slightly as Willow poked her.

“So, we were gonna go see a movie” Tara said to Omi. While Willow was busy poking, she reached across and stole some more fries.

“Sounds good” Omi said, her voice slightly muffled with her mouth full of burger.

Willow had finished tormenting Dawn, and had gone back to eating her food. “Its too bad Buffy couldn’t come with us” she said.

“Oh, I’m sure she’s enjoying herself” Dawn said.

                ********************

Why do they always hide in sewers and caves? Buffy asked herself as she tried not to think about what she was walking in. Why not have some demons whose lair is a penthouse suite? She scowled as she remembered that Glory’s lair had been just that, and decided she liked the sewer-dwellers better. “These demons, N’Gandt?” she asked Nadia, who walked next to her. “She nodded.

“What are they like?”

“Roughly human sized and shaped, but skinny. And very fast.”

“Any tricks to killing them?”

“The usual way.”

Buffy gave up trying to make conversation, the warrior was even more taciturn than usual. She guessed the Nadia’s mood was because of the low ceiling of the sewer pipe, which forced the tall woman to walk in an awkward crouch. She nodded, then lapsed in to silence. She wondered what Xander was doing, alone in is apartment. A number of disturbing options presented themselves and she shuddered, then quickly cleared her mind of mental pictures. She didn’t feel guilty for ditching him tonight, after all, she was working. But she was worried that he was still feeling sorry for himself. She wondered if showering him in unconditional love after the wedding fiasco had been the best idea. Maybe if someone told him he was an ass, he get his act together.

“The scouts are coming back” Nadia said, breaking Buffy’s train of thought. The two warriors who’d gone on ahead came up to her and reported. “There’s a hole in the wall about 20 metres ahead, it leads in to a tunnel, which looks like it opens in to a cave” one said.

“How wide is the tunnel?” Nadia asked.

“We’ll have to go single file” the warrior replied. Nadia swore under her breath.

“I’ll go first” Buffy said.

Buffy slowly crept down the tunnel, crossbow in one hand, sword in the other. Dark, narrow tunnel with slime dripping down the walls, and demons waiting at the end. she thought. Just another Friday night for the Slayer. Still, her sarcasm was half hearted. She’d been pleased when the Order had asked for her help, it was nice to be appreciated. Too often it seemed that the people she fought to save ignored her, or even tried to stop her. And it was true what Xander had said that afternoon. She appreciated the help her friends gave, and she loved them all, but they could never understand what it meant to be the Slayer. She enjoyed fighting with the Order, with other warriors who had dedicated their lives to fighting evil. She remembered how much she’d enjoyed working with the Initiative, before she had discovered their true intentions.

The warriors following her were taking care not to make any sound, but she could sense Nadia behind her. She saw light up ahead and crouched down, then moved slowly forward.

She could hear sounds now, someone was speaking. “The human scum have plagued this world for too long, but our time has come! We will take the life of every man, woman and child!”

Kill everyone, destroy the world, can’t any of these guys think of something original? Buffy thought to herself. She could see a large chamber at the end of the tunnel down, and torchlight flickered from the entrance. She could see the silhouettes of two demons standing either side of the tunnel mouth.

Gesturing for the others to stay where they were, she crawled nearer the entrance. The cave was large, and filled with demons sitting or standing around a large rock. They were all of the same species, like Nadia had said they were human-shaped, but thin and wiry, with claws instead of hands and bluish skin. On top of the rock another demon stood, making its ‘death to all humans” speech. It had tattoo-like markings on its face and bald head. “We won’t stop with the humans!” it proclaimed. “Vampires, the other demon races, all will bow before us or be destroyed. We shall become gods!”

“Llolth, Llolth, Llolth!” the demons chanted. Buffy couldn’t tell if it was the leader’s name, or some kind of battle cry. Not that it mattered. She waved the others forward, then ran through the entrance, swinging her sword and decapitating the demon on her right. She swung her sword to the left, but the second demon jumped out the way, moving so fast it appeared as a blur.

By now the other demons were turning to stare at her. She raised her crossbow and fired at the leader, who snatched the bolt out of the air quicker than she could follow. Seeing that the weapon would be useless, she dropped it and continued running round the edge of the cave, allowing the others to run in behind her.

The two wizards sent energy bolts sizzling towards the demons, lighting up the dark cave. One hit and reduced its target to ash, but by now the demons had realised what was happening, and the second bolt missed as they dived out of the way.

One of the warriors raised his handgun and fired. Even these creatures weren’t fast enough to dodge bullets, and several went down. The bullets that missed ricocheted off the cave walls and sent pieces of rock shooting through the air. “Dammit, no guns!” Mike yelled, throwing himself to the ground, as did everyone else. The warriors drew the swords and joined Buffy, who was already facing off against several N’Gandt.

“You see?” Buffy said as Nadia fought her way alongside her. “Guns, never useful.”

The N’Gandt’s speed helped them to dodge sword strikes, but the confinement of he crowded cave stopped them using it to their advantage. Suddenly, five of them broke away from the general melee and ran for the tunnel, moving so fast they were gone before anyone could register them.

“C’mon!” Buffy yelled, running to the tunnel, Nadia following close behind. As they ran through the entrance, Saul caught up with them. As more demons attempted to escape, Marcus raised a barrier across the tunnel, sealing them all in the cave. “Oh, don’t be in such a hurry” he said, smiling. “We’re just getting started.” He unleashed a volly of energy bolts as Mike and the remaining warriors leapt back in to the fray.

Buffy, Nadia and Saul ran through the sewer, their steps splashing on the wet ground. Though the N’Gandt were fast, they had left a trail in the mud and filth. Soon, Buffy saw streetlight shining down through an open manhole up ahead. “They’ve gone up” she yelled. She leapt on to the access ladder bolted onto the wall, and quickly pulled herself onto the street. She stood and scanned her surroundings, the demons were nowhere to be seen. She had taken about five minutes to get from the cave to here, the N’Gandt had probably done it in one. They could be anywhere by now.

She turned to see Nadia climb out of the manhole, then turn to help Saul out. He had managed to keep up with them, but he was not a young man and was breathing hard. “Have they left any tracks?” Nadia asked.

Buffy scanned the road surface but saw nothing. She shook her head. “And with their head start, we’ll never catch them up.”

Suddenly she was sprawled out on the road, a pain in her back. She looked up to see speeding blurs as N’Gandt ran past Nadia and Saul, swiping at them with their claws.

                ********************

“Well, that was… loud” Willow said as they left the cinema.

“Oh, come on, it wasn’t that bad” Dawn said. “And it was the only movie that had tickets left.”

“It was ok” Tara said. “I guess Bond isn’t really our thing.”

“I don’t see how you can comment on the movie” Omi said with a mischievous grin, “I mean, you were making out the whole way through.”

“Not the whole way through” Willow protested.

“Just during the starting credits” Dawn said.

“And the end credits” Omi added.

“And the bit in between” Dawn finished.

“I don’t see how you could have noticed what we were doing” Tara said, raising her eyebrows. “Seeing as you were drooling over Pierce Brosnan the whole time.”

“Well?” Dawn asked, going slightly red. “You have to admit, he is hot.” Tara and Willow just looked at her. “Ok, so you don’t think so. But Omi’s with me, right?”

Omi flushed even redder than Dawn, but she giggled and nodded.

Tara shook her head in mock exasperation and smiled. “C’mon, lets get you home” she said to Omi. She looped her arm around the younger girl’s, and set off for the warehouse. Dawn and Willow linked arms and followed them.

Tara grinned as she heard fragments of Dawn and Willow’s conversation from behind them. The teen seemed to be trying to convince Will that no movie was complete without some huge explosions and a car chase. She turned to Omi. “How long have you been in the Order?” she asked.

“Since I was about four, I think” Omi told her.

“Were your parents members?”

Omi shook her head. “People in the Order sensed that I was… different. They came to my parents and said they were better equipped to look after me. I think my parents were already having problems with me, they were grateful to have someone else take charge.”

Tara frowned at the note of sadness in the girl’s voice. “Do you see them often?” she asked.

“Never” Omi replied. “The Order are my family now. And besides, I think my parents were… scared of me.”

“Because of your powers?” Tara asked. “You told me you were a seer, you see visions?” She couldn’t see why people would be scared of Omi. Freaked out, maybe. She knew that one of Willow’s friends, well, sort-of-friend, in LA had visions, and no one every considered her to be dangerous. Still, the look of hurt on Omi’s face made clear her feelings about being given away by her parents.

“Ah, I see things…” Omi began. “I’m a telepath.” She looked anxiously at Tara, waiting for her reaction.

“Wow” Tara said. Now she understood, she tried to imagine how unnerved Omi’s parents must have been when their daughter began to tell them what they were thinking.

Omi’s jaw dropped. “You didn’t do the thing!” she exclaimed.

“The thing?”

“When people find out what I can do, they try to stop thinking, or control their thoughts. Most people try it whenever they’re around me. You didn’t.”

Tara shrugged. “Well, I trust you to respect my privacy. And if you have read my mind, it’s a bit late to try and stop you now.”

Omi seemed excited that for once someone wasn’t uneasy around her, then she looked down guiltily. “Ah, the first time I met you in the park, I read your thoughts.”

“I see” was Tara’s only response to the admission.

“It was for reconnaissance” Omi continued. “We had to know more about you, about all of you, whether we could trust you.” Her tone was strained, her arguments didn’t seem to be easing her conscience.

“How much did you get?” Tara asked, her tone still neutral.

“Just surface stuff” Omi told her. “To read deep down stuff a person has to be relaxed, they have to agree to let me read them.”

“And when you met Will and me in the park?”

“No, I swear, I only read you that one time!” Omi insisted.

Tara nodded. “Ok.” To be honest, she wasn’t sure how she felt about this. Her experiences with Glory and the dark time when Willow was a slave to her addiction had left her feeling very possessive of her thoughts. The idea of someone just reading them seemed invasive and unpleasant. “Just so we’re clear…” she began.

“I won’t read you again” Omi finished. A look of panic crossed her features. “I, I didn’t read you just then” she said. “I just guessed what you were gonna say.”

Tara couldn’t help smiling. “I know” she reassured her. She glanced back at Willow and Dawn. Much as she hated talking about people behind their backs, they were going to have to have a conversation about their new friend.

                ********************

Buffy pushed herself off the tarmac and stood. She reached an arm behind her and felt her back, she was bleeding, but not heavily. Nadia and Saul were also pulling themselves upright. “Where are they?” Saul asked as Buffy ran over to them. They stood back to back, eyes searching the dark street. Nothing.

A blur caught Buffy’s eye, and she barely had time to raise her sword before the demon was upon her. She parried its claws, then stabbed it through the chest. After that the demons seemed more cautious, content to buzz them, making attacks as they went past, but not confronting them.

Three blurs solidified as the N’Gandt came to a halt. They stood across the street from Buffy and the others, and made no move to attack. The centre demon was the one with the face markings. “You dare to attack Llolth, puny humans?” it called.

“So Llolth’s your name?” Buffy said. There’s something wrong here she thought. “It’s a pretty crappy name.” The demon snarled at her. Then the thing that had been trying to attract Buffy’s attention finally succeeded. Five demons had run from the cave, she had killed one, three stood across from them. She thrust her sword backwards, and heard a grunt as the forth N’Gandt impaled itself as it ran at her. The remaining three growled.

“You will pay!” Llolth screamed, then the three demons ran in different directions. One exploded into ash as Saul fired an energy bolt it, the other two raced around a corner.

“Go!” the wizard shouted. “I’ll catch up.” Clutching his side, the old wizard began to run as the two women sprinted after the demons.

“They’ve split up” Buffy said as she watched one blur accelerating towards the docks. The other could just be seen, moving back towards town. “You take that one, I’ll take this” she said. Nadia nodded and head towards town. Buffy began jogging towards the docks. There was little point in running, she’d never catch up with it and she’d need her strength to fight. Besides, she didn’t think escape was on Llolth’s mind. He wanted revenge.

Buffy walked along the dockside. She had seen blurs of movement out of the corner of her eye, and was sure that Llolth was tracking her. Walking into an enemy’s trap wasn’t the best strategy, but it was the only one she could think of. In a blur of speed, the N’Gandt attacked. it ran past her, slashing at her face with its claws. Buffy managed to jab it with her sword before it ran out of range, and was gratified to see the demon fall to the ground. It pulled itself up, clutching its wounded leg and hissing in pain. She held her hand against her cheek, and was relieved to find the cuts weren’t too deep.

“Not so speedy now” she mocked as the demon limped away from her. It snarled at her. “Ooh, scary. Do you have any idea how many monsters have growled at me? My sister in a temper is scarier than you.” The demon was backing away now, toward the dockside. “And ‘you’ll pay’? Is there, like, a school for crappy villains? Or is losing all creativity a side effect of being evil?”

A slight movement in the air was her only warning before the second N’Gandt attacked her from behind and slashed her across the ribs. She cried out and dropped to her knees, clutching at her side. It charged at her, and knocked her sword aside as she tried to fend it off from her kneeling position. It raised its talons, then stopped as Llolth yelled “No, leave her to me.” It limped over, then raised its claws above Buffy’s head. She tried to stand, but the pain in her side was agonising and she was losing blood fast.

“No jokes?” Llolth mocked. It turned its head suddenly as an energy bolt shot past it and struck the other N’Gandt, burning it to ash. Llolth tried to limp away, but a second bolt struck it in the chest, igniting it even as it blew the demon over the wall and down into the dark water.

Saul ran across the street and knelt beside Buffy. “Let me see” he ordered, examining her side. The cuts were deep, and her shirt was already soaked with blood. “We need to get you to hospital” he said, producing a cell phone from his pocket. Buffy just nodded, she felt too weak to say anything.

                ********************

Willow and Tara hurried through the hospital entrance, Dawn and Omi close behind. When they had arrived at the warehouse they had been told that Saul had phoned to leave a message for them. Oh hearing it, they had persuaded one of the scholars to drive them to the hospital in one of the Order’s vans. Now they ran up to the reception desk. “Buffy Summers” Willow said breathlessly.

“Are you family?” the receptionist asked.

Willow nodded. The receptionist seemed to need more, so Dawn said “she’s my sister.”

As the receptionist ran a finger down the list of names on her computer screen, Willow turned as she heard their names being called. Nadia was walking towards them. She had several cuts on her arms and face, though all had been cleaned now. One especially deep cut on her cheek had been stitched and was covered by a bandage. “This way” she said, turning to go back the way she came.

“What happened?” Willow asked.

“A demon” Nadia said angrily. “It attacked her from behind while she faced another.”

They reached Buffy’s cubicle and stepped inside. Mike and Saul were already there, and the small spaced soon seemed extremely cramped. Buffy was awake and examining her cross bow. “Thanks for not leaving it behind” she said to Mike. As the others filed in she grinned. “Hey guys.”

“Buffy!” Dawn shouted and ran to hug her.

Buffy returned the hug, then winced slightly as Dawn brushed her injured side. “I’m ok” she said as Dawn pulled back quickly. “Just a few stitches is all.” A slight understatement, all three gashes on her side had needed stitches, and she had been given several pints of blood, but there was no reason to alarm the others. Besides, her Slayer constitution had handled worse in the past.

“What happened?” Tara asked.

Buffy opened her mouth to reply, but Nadia spoke first. “The demon I was following lost me, doubled back and caught her by surprise” she said angrily.

“Hey, don’t blame yourself” Buffy said. “Those things were fast, I couldn’t keep up with mine either. I only found it because it was waiting for me.” Nadia nodded, but didn’t seem any less angry with herself.

“Then just when I thought I was in real trouble” Buffy continued, “Saul turned up and made the demons extra crispy.”

“I just glad I got there in time, I’ve slowed down in my old age…” the wizard said, then broke off as Dawn flung her arms around him. “Um, yes” he said, a little embarrassed, but he grinned at Dawn as she released her grip on him.

“You caught all the others?” Buffy asked, turning to Mike.

“Yeah” he nodded. “Trapped in that cave they couldn’t use their speed as much.” He rubbed a faint scratch down the side of his face. “Vicious little bastards though.”

“What’s going on in here?” A voice asked. Buffy shoved the crossbow into Mike’s hands, who quickly hid it in the bag in which he’d bought it.

The curtains were pulled back by a doctor. “What are all you people doing in here?” she demanded. “Out, give my patient some air.” She glanced at Nadia’s injuries. “Have you been seen to?” The warrior nodded. “Then out! You can all wait outside.” She waited as the Scoobies and Order members filed past.

“How do you feel?” the doctor asked Buffy.

“Good” Buffy replied. “On the mend.”

“Hmm” the doctor said, frowning. “And you’re sure you wouldn’t like to speak to the police?”

Buffy shook her head. When Saul had brought her in he had been unable to think of an explanation for her injuries, and had simply said it was an ‘accident’. The doctor thought Buffy had been in a gang fight or something similar.

“Hmm” the doctor said again. “To be honest, I’m amazed you’re awake so soon. If you continue to recover this fast, you’ll be released tomorrow or the day after.” She glanced at her clipboard again, then nodded to Buffy. “Well, try to get some rest, and I’ll check on you first thing tomorrow.”

As the doctor left, Buffy lay back and tried to forget about the stinging in her side. Despite her assurances to the others, she was angry with herself. If |Saul hadn’t been there tonight, she would be dead, killed by a less then impressive demon with delusions of grandeur. Still, she was dealing with it better this time. The last time she had come close to death, she had spent the evening listening to Spike’s sordid past in an effort to understand why. Now she knew that defeats would come, and all she could do was be thankful that she had her friends, and the Order, to watch her back.

Okaaay.... as suspected the Order wants something from Willow and Tara. No doubt the order thinks it is for some higher good, we just don't know what that is though. I'm fairly sure Willow wont let them use Tara for anything without their permission, dark magic drawbacks be damned. She is rather protective of Tara you see and I suspect the other way around is true as well.

I don't feel sorry for Xander at all. He isn't much of a warrior, never has been. So when trained warriors arrive in town he has to take a backseat. He *might* try to fix things with Anya if he even wants to.

Buffy rushing into a situation causing herself to be in danger, never seen that before :) . Nadia and Buffy should have stayed together indeed, Buffy's instinct that they wanted revenge was right.

Omi didn't have a childhood did she ? Of course her parents were scared, they probably needed more time to get used to their child being able to read mind. She conveniently left out that she not only reads minds, check chapter 1 for details. I recommend protective shielding-spells for both Tara and Willow, just in case she tries something on them.

This update doesn't answer how trusthworthy Omi is. Problem being that she's very loyal to a bunch of not-so-thrustworthy people. Or at the very least people who refuse to tell their true motives up front. Omi will likely do anything Saul tells her.

As for forcing Tara and Willow to help the order, that wont hold long-term. Either they will find out or they'll come after the order once the threat is dealt with. (well, Willow and Buffy will go after them for sure... :) )

Even though I'm still not fully convinced The Order are trustworthy I thought Xander's petty envy about them patrolling with Buffy, instead of pleased she has capable helpers, was typical of him.

Marcus seems to be getting even more impatient. I do hope he isn't going to do something rash that will endanger our girls.

The scenes with our girls and the two teens were sweet, everyone being so playful. Omi's admission to Tara was interesting as it seems she feels she can trust her.

chronic...wow...I hardly even know where to start.

Your characterization of Willow and Tara, and the way you write them together is excellent. Spot on. Alternatingly sweet and sexy. Just like we all know they really are. I like how you've dealt with Willow's "addiction" and recovery. (And, yes, that whole addiction plot in season 6...lame beyond the telling of it.)

It's clear that you know Willow and Tara well as individuals, and that you've given their attitudes, motivations, personalities, etc., a great deal of thought. And it's clear that you have a profound respect and understanding of their relationship and its dynamics.

You also write Buffy, Dawn, and Xander very well. I'm impressed that you can write them accurately, while at the same time make them immensely likeable. You've captured Buffy's sense of isolation as the Slayer, while managing to keep her from being so self-absorbed and aloof. And Dawn? Dawn is just delightful here and not at all whiny. Amazingly, you've also made me actually like Xander.

I'll admit that I was a bit put off at the beginning by there being so many original characters. But I'm so glad I stuck with it. As the story has progressed, and I've gotten used to each member of the Order and her/his unique personality, they now seem as integral a part of the story as the Scoobies.

And, of course, as it should be, Willow and Tara are the heart of this story. There can never be too much of that.

I'm intrigued by the plot. Who are these guys? Why are they so keen on securing the trust of the Scoobies? What do they want Tara for? Do they want Willow, too? Is it for something good or something bad?

I like the ambiguity so far of the Order, and the mystery of what they're up to. I vacillate between trusting them and not trusting them. That is good writing right there, chronic.

This is a great story and I'm very much looking forward to your updates.

This fic is amazing. It truly is like Buffy should be. A mysterious group of people with a murky mission. Action like Buffy should hope to have.

I like omi and everyone else really the only one I don't trust is Marcus. His power hungry mentality will lead him to do harm. And your portrayal of w/t is really right on the money. Compassion was always their strength and their love for each other never in doubt. You make Willow work hard for the magic here, no quick answers.

Thanks for the fic, I look forward to more.

Balance Point update

Postby chronic » Tue Jan 14, 2003 12:12 pm

Grimlock and Molly: Although we know the Order's intentions may not be good, Willow, Tara and the others have all come to trust them. That may be about to change...

Maudmac and Xita, stop, you'll make me blush! :blush Seriously though, your's and everyone else's kind words are much appreciated.

On with the show...

Willow and Tara headed downtown, towards the Order’s warehouse. “It must be so weird, hearing other people’s thoughts” Willow said. “I mean, when Buffy could she nearly went mad.”

“I think Omi has more control over what she reads” Tara replied. “She only hears someone’s thoughts if she chooses to.”

“Even so, voices in your head, that’s gotta be weird” Willow said. “I remember how freaked the guys were when I spoke telepathically to them.” She looked down guiltily, the fact that she hadn’t cared about her friends feelings back then had been a warning of things to come. Still, that was all in the past now. She lifted her head back up.

Tara smiled as Willow’s haunted expression faded after a few seconds. She didn’t need to be telepathic to know what her lover had been thinking, and was relieved that Willow was finding it easier to deal with the things she had done. “And all her life people have been nervous around her” she said, continuing their conversation about Omi.

“So we show her that we’re not scared of her” Willow said.

                ********************

Omi stared at the book in front of her without seeing it. Not going to school didn’t mean she didn’t have to do homework, and Saul wanted her to read and make notes on several chapters. As the wizard walked past Omi’s cubicle he saw her troubled expression. “Omi?” he asked before entering. Just because her ‘room’ was a curtained-off cubicle didn’t mean he didn’t respect her privacy.

“Huh? Oh, come in.”

Saul squeezed through the gap between two curtain panels. “I couldn’t help notice you seemed distracted” he said.

“What, me? No, I’m doing my homework.” Omi assured him. Saul stared pointedly at her writing pad. She had written the chapter heading at the top, but that was as far as her note taking had got. “Ok, so maybe I’m a little distracted” she admitted.

“Want to talk about it?” Saul asked, lowering himself on to the end of Omi’s bed.

“Um, you’ll think I’m stupid” Omi said. “Its just, last week, when I went out with Tara and Willow and Dawn, it was so great. And then I thought it would be a good idea to tell Tara everything, and now I expect they hate me.”

“I very much doubt that” the old man reassured her.

“Ok, maybe not.” She admitted to herself that she was being a little melodramatic. “But I bet they’re freaked out by me, just like everyone else.”

“I’m not freaked out by you” Saul said. “No one in our Group is.”

“Yeah, but that’s because we’re all, um…”

“Freaks?” Saul asked, grinning. “Perhaps we are. But our new friends are no strangers to the paranormal either. I’m sure they’re not scared by your abilities.”

Omi thought back to when she had told Tara about her telepathy. Although she could control her power, intense thoughts and emotions were like a shout in a quiet room, she couldn’t help but hear it. When most people found out about her, she picked up their fear of her, or at least their desire to keep her out of their minds. The only people who hadn’t reacted that way were the Order members, who had already known what she was when they met her, and Tara.

“Did you tell them about your other ability?” Saul asked.

Omi should her head. “If I told them I can change people’s thoughts and perceptions, they really would be scared of me.” Saul raised an eyebrow at her. “Ok, maybe they’d be ok with it, but I think I’ll get to know them better before I tell them that.”

In the next cubicle along, Marcus was reading a book and trying to ignore the voices coming clearly through the curtains. It was bad enough that the group’s seer was an angst-ridden teenager, but to have to listen to her complaining as well! His mood wasn’t improved by that fact that it had been over a day since he last used one of the crystals, but he couldn’t take one with Omi in the building. The power they contained caused a high, followed by a feeling of contentment that the telepath would be sure to pick up, whether she was deliberately reading him or not. The Order had rules about the recreational use of magic, they were too strict in Marcus’ opinion. The crystals contained a tiny amount of dark magic, just enough to give a high. They were harmless. But the others wouldn’t accept that, if they caught him they’d follow the letter of the law. Omi, or someone like her, would erase all his memories of the Order and of magic, and then he’d be left somewhere to try and make a ‘normal’ life, never knowing what he’d lost.

“Have you spoken to them since you told them?” Saul’s voice carried clearly in to Marcus’ cubicle. He was still trying to reassure the neurotic girl! Marcus closed his book impatiently, then pulled his bag from under the bed and took a crystal from the secret compartment. He pocketed it, Omi’s abilities had a limited range, once outside the warehouse he could use it without fear of her detecting it.

“No, but they must have been busy taking care of Buffy” Omi told Saul. “Have you seen them?”

“I’ve spoken to them on the phone” he said. “They wanted to let us know that Buffy is fine, and we’ve arranged for them to come here to perform some more complex magical exercises.”

“They’re coming here?! When? Why didn’t you tell me?” Omi demanded.

“Because you’d have been even more worried than you were, and they’ll be here in five minutes” Saul said. “And I’m sure you have nothing to worry about” he added with a smile.

They heard the main door open, the Willow’s voice called out “Um, hi?”

“They’re early” Saul said. He stood and went out into the warehouse, Omi close behind him. “Hello Willow, Tara” he said.

“Um, hi” Omi said.

“Hi Saul” Willow said as they walked across the concrete floor. “Hey Omi.” She reached out and hugged the younger girl.

Saul smiled as Tara hugged Omi, pleased that he had been right about his new friends. “How is Buffy?” he asked.

“Restless” Willow said, rolling her eyes. “She’s never been one for sitting still, and telling her its for her own good only annoys her more.”

“But she’s much better” Tara added. “Slayer healing and all. The doctors said she should be up and about in a day or two.”

Saul nodded. “Would you like to start straight away? I’ve selected a number of rituals for increasing magical control.”

“Sure” Willow said, and followed Saul to his cubicle.

“Omi?” Saul asked as the teen made to follow them. She looked questioningly at him. “You have your studies to do” he reminded her.

“Huh? But, I could help, with the magic…”

“If you finish your studies” he replied. Omi’s shoulder’s slumped in defeat.

“Homework time, missy” Willow said, grinning as she repeated the phrase she often said to Dawn. “Maybe when we’ve finished we can go out somewhere? Dawn should be out of school by then, we can call her.” She looked at Tara, who nodded in agreement.

They all looked at Saul. “Of course” he said. “If Omi has finished her studies by then.”

“I will have!” she exclaimed, turning and hurrying back to her cubicle, determined to finish her work as quickly as possible.

They turned to go in to Saul’s cubicle when the curtains of another were shoved aside, and Marcus stepped out in to the warehouse. “I’m going out for a while” he said. As he turned to go he smirked, then turned back. “Have fun with your Magic Abusers Anonymous meeting.”

“What?” Willow asked, her eyes widening in shock.

“Hey!” Tara yelled, but the wizard was already walking out the door.

They both turned to look at Saul, who was staring at the door, an angry expression on his face. “I’m sorry about that. I’ll speak to him later” he said ominously.

“I s’pose he’s right” Willow said quietly. “I mean, you are helping me recover from addiction.” She mover closer to Tara. “He didn’t have to rub it in though.”

“Stupid jerk” Tara said bitterly as she put an arm round her lover. Willow leaned into her. “What’s his problem?”

Marcus grinned as he walked away from the warehouse. It was bad enough that their mission depended on a recovering magic junkie and her girlfriend, but to devote their time and resources to help her sort out a problem of her own making! She had needed reminding of her failings. Only those with no will power became addicts, dark magic wasn’t dangerous if you stayed in control.

He stepped in to an alley and took the crystal from his pocket. He knew he was in control of it, he just needed the power as a quick pick-me-up. He raised the crystal to his forehead and sighed as the magic entered his body. There was no way he could become an addict, he knew he could give up dark magic any time he wanted to.

                ********************

For what must have been the hundredth time, Buffy wondered why she hadn’t just claimed to be unable to work until her notice with the Doublemeat was up. She had missed several shifts in the last week due to her injury, but now she was back on her feet some sense of honesty had compelled her to work this, her last ever shift. She glanced at her watch, it was one minute later than when she last checked. Even knowing that she would never work here again, never come in here again for that matter, she couldn’t work up any enthusiasm.

She was dragged away from her thoughts as the door swung open and someone walked in. They wore a dingy grey hooded top, with the hood pulled up and forward, obscuring most of their face. Still, two lumps on the side of their head gave Buffy a suspicion, which was confirmed as the figure came up to the counter.

“Hi Clem” she said.

“Hi Buffy” the loose-skinned demon replied. He reached up and adjusted one of his ears, which were flattened against his head by his hood. “How are you? I heard you were sick.”

The Slayer unconsciously rubbed her side where she had been injured. “Yeah, an accident with my other job” she said quietly.

Clem nodded. “But you’re better now? Don’t wanna be sick for your new job.”

Buffy wasn’t surprised that he knew about her change of job, the demon had been coming here for years, and was on speaking terms with many of the staff. This being Sunnydale, they accepted the various excuses he used to explain his appearance. She smiled at him. “Yep, I start next week and I’ll be good as new by then. So, what can I get you?”

“Oh, I don’t want you to serve me” Clem said. Buffy raised her eyebrows questioningly. “I, um, I wondered if you could ask Sophie to come serve me” the demon continued nervously, gesturing at one of Buffy’s co-workers. “We chat whenever I come here, and I thought, maybe, I’d, um, ask her out. She’s really nice, and sometimes she gives me extra fries for free!”

“Free fries, huh?” Buffy said. She turned and called behind her. “Sophie! Can you serve this customer?” As the girl came forward she said in a normal voice “I’ve got to go and, um, do a thing.” She gave Clem an encouraging nod, then headed for the staff area.

“Oh, hi Clem!” she heard Sophie say as she recognised the demon. She rolled her eyes, but couldn’t help but smile.

Willow gently floated back down onto the bed, then rolled to her side as Tara floated down too. She put an arm round her lover and pulled her close. “That was, well, um…” she said, literally at a loss for words.

“I know” Tara said, and kissed her. They lay there for a while, both breathing heavily and drenched in sweat. It had been the first time they had levitated while making love since getting back together, the first time in nearly a year. They hadn’t planned it, but with Willow finally confident enough to release her power, their magic had merged together and lifted them up, the way it always had before their trouble.

Tara wiped the sweat from her brow. “You want a drink?” she asked.

Willow nodded gratefully, she was still breathing heavily and her throat was dry. She watched as Tara got up and pulled on a robe, then headed downstairs. Willow pulled the bedclothes over her, then rolled to the edge of the bed and reached down for Saul’s magic book. They had been reading it earlier, and now she idly flicked through it, half reading, half thinking about what she would do when Tara returned.

She smiled as she considered how useful this book had been. Being able to cast again was useful, particularly with slaying, but the real benefits had been what she had just experienced. She and Tara connected on all levels, physical, mental, magical, and the loss of even one of those connections was like a wound that had to be healed. She was grateful for the help she had had in her recovery, from her friends, from Saul, and most of all from Tara. She had no doubts that without Tara, she would never have made it.

She frowned as her memory threw up less helpful people. Amy had tried to lure her back in to dark magic, and Marcus had made fun of her for becoming an addict. She assumed the wizard had found the remark funny, but a few years ago it would have crushed her self esteem, and any confidence she had that she could use magic again. Now it simply made her all the more determined to succeed.

Saul had promised to let Marcus know in no uncertain terms that such comments were unacceptable, but Willow knew that was unnecessary. He was just a jerk who liked to put people down, and she wouldn’t let him get to her. Still, it was nice to know that Saul was concerned about her.

A chapter heading caught her eye as she flicked the pages back and forth. She opened the book fully, read the title again, then rapidly read the text.

“What’cha readin?” Tara asked as she came in, holding two glasses of water.

“Tara, read this” Willow said, her voice serious.

Her lover hurried to the side of the bed and crouched down to read the book. “What is it?” she asked.

“This chapter is about dark magic” Willow said quietly.

“I know” Tara said, confused. “About how to resist it, we’ve gone through that one already.”

“No, this is that chapter” Willow said, flicking back to an earlier section of the book. She turned the pages back and waited while Tara read the chapter in question. She nodded as Tara looked up worriedly. “This chapter is about how to use dark magic.”

Whats so worriesome about a book on how to use dark magic ? If you don't want to use, just don't. Skip the chapter or close the book, whats the problem ? Besides, maybe you need some training in using dark magic to prevent it exploding out of you eventually ?? I.e. if it's IN you, it has to come out one way or another.. better vent it of safely.

Marcus is not only a jerk he's an arrogant jerk. He's not addicted to dark magic noooo, he just needs one every day and he'll be fine. No way he can keep that up without raising suspicions. Either Omi (who's in for a nice conflict of interests btw.) or Willow will likely pick on Marcus using those crystals.

Still wondering what would happen if someone fell over Marcus' backpack and crushed those crystals by accident. Hopefully Willow wont be around when that happens. How long would Marcus manage without his daily dose, hmmm....

Whatever happens with the Order, they (or at least Saul) DID help Willow deal with her dark magic problem. Now if they could just ASK for what they want from Willow and/or Tara that would be nice. I noticed Saul didn't seem to mind Omi telling them 'all'...good good..
