Avocados are really a very sacred thing. I'll pretend I didn't hear the anti-avocado sentiment on this board...just this once. And I have to say that I love mushrooms...I think they're like the meat of the vegetable world...that and artichoke hearts. And you British people are so kooky with all of your fancy names for food...trying to confuse us with your alternate definitions of chips and crisps and everything else; you know, you really should be more courteous to us Americans. It's not like your culture was around for longer, or anything

P.S. I've just decided the British are still angry about the American Revolution. That's why they torture us! And how do British textbooks describe the various revolutions and the breaking away of their former colonies; I imagine it would be a little different from what's in books over here...

About the date, I just figured I had the dates this week wrong...I'm great with numbers but our calendar just doesn't make sense. I'm going to convert to metric time.

Okay, well, ranch dressing is an acceptable compromise for me, and don't anybody even think of pointing out that it has mayonnaise-like qualities or even includes mayonnaise as an ingredient.

Ugh. I really feel that Ranch dressing is the most foul substance on the face of the earth. I realize, though, that I'm in the minority, holding that opinion, as most of the people I know will gladly slather the stuff on just about anything given the opportunity to do so.

But then what do I know, I'm still recovering from my Krispy Kream-gasm. I might just be delirious.

I've seen mushy peas. I've smelled them. God help me, I even tasted a small bite once. They're not food! Of course, if you eat steak & kidney pie, I can see how you might mistake them for food. Sorry, I couldn't help but say bad things about them but I did like the "Bored now" theory of the end of the British empire!

Tulipp, nope, there are no mayo-like qualities about Ranch dressing; well, except they're both white and...

I'm going to have to find and try a Krispy Kreme doughnut after your description, Dumbsaint!

now, what's wrong with mushy peas? how else are you supposed to eat peas, crunchy? Actually, now that I think about it, I suppose I have had crunchy peas before. I think they were fried though. I like eating frozen peas while they're still frozen. Not a lot, just maybe a small handful before I cook them.

well , not that i'm one to preach on the wonders of pureed food goodness , but i have to stand up for mushy peas. the sweet/salty/green/mush mystery that goes so well with huge greasy chips whilst on holiday as a child in mablethorpe , is not to be underestimated .

FOR you can only judge mushy peas if you yourself have been in that cold , wet caravan overlooking the foggy coastline of this sceptred isle , with your parents....eating fat chips ,drinking dandelion and burdock and feeling miserable......held only to life by the slight warmth of mushy peas.

i rest my case.

Sweetjane, I'm impressed by your impassioned defence of mushy peas. Maybe I was too old when I first tried them, but given a choice between being held to life by mushy peas and death, I'd have to think about it...

Now. now. Don't knock steak & kidney pie. My mother happens to make an incredible one. Of course she's pure Polish (except for all the Mongol and Tartar blood), so she lacks the essential Anglo-Saxon bad food gene.

She also makes wonderful mincemeat tarts, shortbead and tourtiere (a kind of French Canadian meat pie). All of these are needed for our traditional Polish/Scottish/Quebecois Christmases.

I haven't been brave enough to try black pudding. I do like some things I can't think about too much though. I eat kim chee and love it though I have to hold my nose to do so. And how can anyone eat lobster and think insects are gross? They're both arthropods, but the lobster is bigger with more legs and feelers and thus much more disgusting, right?

Well, it's just kind of like a spicy sausage. The best way to eat it - I think - is sliced and then fried. And you really can pretend it's made of something nice that way.

Best with bacon, fried egg, fried bread, and sausage... then you can hide it amongst the nicer things.

Like haggis, just don;t think of what it really is.

I can't believe I missed a daily thread that involved talk of steak & kidney pudding, mushy peas & black pudding.

As mentioned before there is nothing wrong with black pudding, no really there's not, we analysis the stuff at work along with other tasty food products like kebab meat & chicken skin (that stuff goes in chicken nuggets).

I can remember once when I was a kid, my little sister ate the plastic rind you sometimes get on blackpudding. My sis is really not that bright.

See, I'm sitting here trying to come up with the most disgusting American food I can think of (not that anything mentioned here has been disgusting ), and the best I can do is my mother's specialty. Haven't had it when I was a kid, but it is....ta da...

Peachy Cheeseburger Pie.

This is a pie crust filled with sloppy joe mix (hamburger and canned tomato sauce). Then on top, in a little pinwheel shape, are half slices of Kraft american cheese and cling peaches. I think she baked it for awhile.

Fellow Americans, surely we have more disgusting food to claim as our legacy than this?

Edited to add: I'm not saying English food is disgusting. I'm saying my mother's peachy cheeseburger pie is disgusting. For the record.

Um...how about scrapple? My grandfather is from Pennsylvania, and he loves to have scrapple. I tried it this summer for breakfast, it's not really that bad, but I'll never eat it again. Here's a link of what's in it:

Oh yeah, scrapple. I lived in Philadelphia for 6 years and managed to avoid scrapple every morning the whole time.

My mom was raised in northern Virginia and she LOVES scrapple. Every time we go up there to visit her family, we always go to this tiny little diner for breakfast and she gets a big plate of scrapple, while my dad and I sit on the other side of the table and try to avoid horking up our toast. She tried to tell us what was in it once, but I didn't let her finish. ewwwwwwww.

Oh, and she also likes creasy greens (sp?), which I can't stand.
