Anyway. There's a bit of a story behind this poem. I wrote this a couple months ago. One day I was just ranting in my journal about all the day-to-day stuff, you know, fully aware that I wasn't really "writing" anything that could turn into any sort of actual piece/story/poem. so this thought popped in my head, "Jeez, you're just wasting ink." So I got sort of mad at myself, sort of angsty over the whole writer's block all at the same time. Enough of the rambling, this is what I ended up with. Warning--it's a tad lengthy.
"The Pen" (I'm not much for titles...*cough*)
The clear-shafted pen.
Pricey, but not so expensive you cringe.
Although a skeptic at heart,
You can’t deny being impressed by its
Sheer,
Inky,
Boldness.
Profusely flowing,
Wet ink.
Waiting, at your disposal.
So impressed
You pretend not to notice
The way it smears your hand,
Ever so subtly.
Every day,
You use it,
Either
Ignoring or choosing not to see
The cylinder of ink,
Its proclamation of identity,
“Look at my bold shade!”
Dwindle slowly,
Bit by bit,
Word by word,
Letter by cursed letter
That you write.
Write, so casually,
Giving no thought to its import,
How it sucks a drop
Of lifeblood from the pen.
You write and write,
Letting the words flow like
A tidal rush.
Pick it up,
Read it,
Let the passion
Possess your hands once again.
But this time, no pen
To channel the emotions.
You take the page,
Crumple it,
Rip it to shreds
With spite, anger,
Convinced if you destroy these words
They will cease to be.
And it will all be okay.
Here, on this page,
You’ve wasted so much
Of your pen.
Cut its life short even more.
But you,
You do not care.
However, you do expect
That which you know will be granted.
Surely, the silent, ready, willing devotion
Of your pen
To be your voice.
Why, what are you without your pen?
Merely a bubbling mass of
Jumbled thought and emotions,
As likely to fade
As the sun’s descent from the evening sky.
Anyhoo, I'll probably add a few others in due time. I liked this one, so I decided to suck it up and just post one
Feedback would be greatly appreciated.~Lauren
